'Honor Thy Father' Pulled Out of Some Metro Manila Cinemas

'Honor Thy Father' Pulled Out of Some Metro Manila Cinemas

Source: Rappler

Following the release of the 8 Metro Manila Film Festival entries on Friday, December 25, some films have already been pulled out of cinemas, according to Nilalang director Pedring Lopez and co-producer Wesley Villarica.

On Saturday, December 26, Rappler spoke to Lopez and Villarica about the issue through Facebook chat.

"In less than a day [of screening] we started getting pulled out of a few cinemas, and when today's screening started, from 36 theaters in Manila and 7 provincial theatres we were down to less than 20 [in total]," said Villarica.

He added that the MMFF committee has not explained why their movies were being pulled out, and the same happened to Honor Thy Father: "As far as we all know, it was Honor Thy Father and Nilalang who got the most theaters canceled."

On Facebook, Honor Thy Father writer Michiko Yamamoto said that the movie was pulled out of 10 theaters after the first day of the festival.

Lopez and Villarica said that most theaters were filled with two of the bigger productions among the 8 entries: My Bebe Love and Beauty and the Bestie.

Later in the interview, Lopez said, "We expected the two big movies to really dominate the box-office but all our cinemas [are screening] either [the] AlDub or Vice [Ganda] movie. Even direk (director) Erik Matti's movie has the same problem, and now disqualified pa [sila] (it's disqualified too)."

My Bebe Love stars the popular tandem of Alden Richards and Maine "Yaya Dub" Mendoza, also known as AlDub. Among the film's producers are Antonio P Tuviera Entertainment and GMA Films, a subsidiary of GMA Network.

On the other hand, Beauty and the Bestie stars Coco Martin and Vice Ganda, was produced by ABS-CBN Films, and distributed by its subsidiary, Star Cinema. Both are under ABS-CBN Corporation.

Both GMA and ABS-CBN are the biggest media companies in the Philippines.

"My friends and I were supposed to book the whole director's club [cinema] today in SM Aura to watch the film but when I woke up today it was already replaced by AlDub," shared Villarica.

Lopez said his friends were supposed to watch on December 26 as well, but they found that the film was already pulled out. "I feel lang [that] the MMFF should at least protect the small indie [productions]," he added.

Villarica also said that their film should have at least gotten 3 days of screening, especially given that the bigger productions were being screened at more cinemas.

"[Because] we were given nga only 40 plus cinemas compared to the big studios who got more than 60 to 70, then this morning Vice's movie is already [at] 150 plus. Its crazy. Not everybody wants to go out on Christmas day and line up for a movie," said Villarica.

Lopez also said that you don't get to choose which cinemas your movies will screen at – they had to draw lots. "Some cinemas, I was told, we were only given 2 screenings, nung gabi pinalitan na kami (at night, we got switched out)."

When asked what they had to say to the MMFF committee in light of the issue, Villarica responded, "We would like to appeal to the MMFF committee to help support local cinema by ensuring that all entries get ample screening time, and that we believe that we can offer the viewing public an alternative movie that can honestly be at par with international productions. One day is not a gauge of how many people would want to see the movie."

Maine Mendoza Questions Her Own Best Supporting Actress Award

Maine Mendoza Questions Her Own Best Supporting Actress Award

She could have just accepted the award as it was given to her without her buying or begging for it, but instead, Maine Mendoza asked the same question people are throwing at the organizers of 41st Metro Manila Film Festival since last night, "Bakit ako?"

Immediately after learning that she won the Best Actress plum in the ongoing 41st edition of the annual festival, Maine posted on her personal Twitter account her reaction to the award reflecting how she behave in such a situation where non-believers could pull another online attack towards her.

Instead of bragging about this new achievement, she asked "Bakit ako (why me)?" followed by expressing how she appreciated the recognition given to her the MMFF committee by saying, "Maraming salamat po."

If you're as phenomenal and as huge as Maine with large following who would dare fight to protect you from bashers, how can you be this grounded, and cool and classy?

ABS-CBN News condemns in the strongest terms the attack Saturday on our News team by motorcycle-riding gunmen in Bangolo, Marawi City.

We are relieved that Ronnie, Emilito, and Gary are safe and unharmed. We are also grateful to the Philippine Army’s 103rd Brigade for providing temporary refuge to our News team.

MMFF Committee Vehemently Denies ALDUB Fans Claim of Ticket Swapping

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Committee vehemently denied the accusations made by ALDUB fans of "ticket swapping" incidents in some SM Malls Cinemas during the first day of the 41st edition of the annual film festival.

The organizers of the festival calls the claim as "baseless issue that will only sideline the true intent and purpose of the festival.

"The Metro Manila Film Festival, after looking into the ticket swapping issue, strongly denies the existence of such and is enjoining all the stakeholders of the festival to be responsible in expressing their sentiments especially on social media," a statement posted on Facebook read.

After one ALDUB fan named Monica Mapalo posted on Twitter her claim that her ticket for "My Bebe Love" was being "swapped" with a ticket of "Beauty and the Bestie," Jose Javier Reyes, the director of "My Bebe Love," immediately responded to the accusation and took to Twitter to "confirm" incidents of "ticket swapping". He wrote:

"The objective of the MMFF is to promote the local film industry and this baseless issue will only sideline the true intent and purpose of the festival. Let’s continue supporting all the entries of the MMFF 2015," the statement added.

MMFF Committee Disqualifies John Lloyd Cruz' 'Honor Thy Father'

One day after record-breaking opening day of the 41st Metro Manila Film Festival, the MMFF Committee decided to disqualify the drama movie "Honor Thy Father" starring John Lloyd Cruz to win the Best Picture award.

The Erik Matti-directed film will no longer qualified to enter into festival's the Best Picture race because of the failure of the film's producer, Ronald "Dondon" Monteverde, to "disclose its participation to the CinemaOne Originals Festival 2015 as the opening film."

Graded "A" by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), "Honor Thy Father' also stars Meryll Soriano and Tirso Cruz III.

Look: ALDUB Fans Accuse SM Cinemas of Ticket Swapping, SM Cinema Releases Statement

The heat is on in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Immediately after the cinemas all over the country open its door to the 8 MMFF 2015 movie entries on Christmas day, fans of both Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza (ALDUB) love team and Vice Ganda put to Twitter its claim of box-office dominance.

Some fans posted that ALDUB's "My Bebe Love" earned P1 million in just one hour while Vice Ganda starrer "Beauty and the Bestie" raked a whopping P2.6 million in 30 minutes (READ FULL DETAILS HERE).

Late afternoon on Friday, reports of cinema ticket swapping was reported on several SM Cinemas nationwide. ALDUB fans said SM cinemas issued tickets bearing the Star Cinema movie despite  buying "My Bebe Love" cinema tickets.

SM Management was quick to address the issue saying:

Even Jose Javier Reyes, director of the "My Bebe Love" warns the movie goers to be very vigilant and take as much evidence and immediately report incident to cinema management.

Do you think it is just a simple concern of human error (parang Miss Universe 2015 lang?), or an intentional action to manipulate the ticket sales?

MMFF 2015 Day 1 Result: 'My Bebe Love' Earns P1M in 1 Hour, 'Beauty and the Bestie' P2.6M in 30 Minutes

MMFF 2015 Day 1 Result: 'My Bebe Love' Earns P1M in 1 Hour, 'Beauty and the Bestie' P2.6M in 30 Minutes

With the huge turn-out of fans and observers who braved the heat of the sun just to get a glimpse of their favorite stars during last Wednesday's annual Parade of Stars, this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is surely the biggest edition yet of the annual all-Filipino Christmas movie festival.

Aside from the MMFF veterans such as Vic Sotto, Vice Ganda, Ai Ai delas Alas and Kris Aquino, this year is filled with the most followed celebrity pairing of todays - James Reid and Nadine Lustre, Kim Chiu and Xian Lim, Marlo Mortel and Janella Salvador, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, among others adding to the stiff competition of which movie will reign in the box-office.

During last Monday's presscon, "All You Need is Pag-Ibig" actress Kris Aquino admitted that she already accepted defeat (at least on the first day of MMFF today, Christmas day) to Vic and Ai-Ai starrer "My Bebe Love" only because the phenomenal ALDUB tandem is included in the cast. She, however, believes that her movie which also stars KimXi, Jodi Sta. Maria, Ian Veneracion, Derek Ramsay and Bimby Yap have a strong fight to lead the competition in the succeeding days.

Vice Ganda, on the other hand, admitted that there is high pressure in the MMFF this year knowing that he will be facing a stiff competition with Vic-Aiai-AlDub starrer.

Lagi naman may pressure, dapat ay pressure, kailangan i-entertain mo ang threat,” he said in a recent interview.

"Saka hindi kami nag-ulit o hindi luma ang comedy na makikita dito," he added.

Vice has been a consistent topnotcher in terms of MMFF box-office sales is concern. His past MMFF entries like "The Unkabogable Praybeyt Benjamin" in 2011, "Sisterakas" in 2012, "Girl, Boy, Bakla, Tomboy" in 2013, and "The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin" last year outsell other entries including Vic's "Enteng Ng Ina Mo," "Si Agimat, Si Enteng at Ako," "My Little Bossings" and "My Big Bossing's Adventures".

As early as the first hour of the MMFF opening today, fans on Twitter reported that "Beauty and the Bestie" which also stars Coco Martin earned P2.6M in just 30 minutes, while "My Bebe Love" raked P1-M in 1 hours.

So which is true?

A photo showing a long queue of movie patrons, and a sold-out movie houses are likewise making the rounds online proving that the 41st edition of the annual movie festival can easily beat its last year record of P1-B ticket sales.
