Popular Manga GHOST IN THE SHELL Transforms Into Big Screen Thriller feat. Scarlett Johansson

From Rupert Sanders, director of Snow White and the Huntsman comes Ghost in the Shell, based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series written and illustrated by Shirow Masamune.

In the near future, Major (Scarlett Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others.

Scarlett Johansson (The Avengers, Lucy) heads up an international cast that also features Pilou Asbæk (Ben-Hur), "Beat" Takeshi Kitano (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Battle Royale series), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Michael Carmen Pitt (TV's Hannibal), Chin Han (Independence Day: Resurgence), Danusia Samal (TV's Tyrant), Lasarus Ratuere (TV's Terra Nova), Yutaka Izumihara (Unbroken) and Tawanda Manyimo (The Rover), as well as Daniel Henshall (AMC's series TURN: Washington's Spies) and Kaori Momoi (Memoirs Of A Geisha).

Since the publication of Masamune Shirow's original manga in 1989, Ghost in the Shell has inspired a devoted worldwide following, including influential filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and the Wachowskis. The epic media franchise already includes two landmark anime feature films and two television series, as well as novels, video and mobile games.

Rupert Sanders was already very familiar with the first Ghost in the Shell anime feature, which he lauds as a milestone in the history of modern cinema for the way it blends a quintessentially Japanese milieu with popular science-fiction tropes. "The grown-up animation is pretty spectacular," says the director. "It set the standard for a futuristic global aesthetic. The character of Major is fundamentally exciting - she's so powerful and sexual. She's a human and she's a machine. The mix of all these elements was very intoxicating to me as a filmmaker."

Not long after Sanders officially signed on to the project in January 2014 he presented the producers with an original 110-page graphic novel to lay out his take on the film. "I wanted to return to the original world of Ghost in the Shell," he explains. "The visual language of the manga really caught my imagination, so I used many images from the original in that rough collage of the story."

Ghost In The Shell is unprecedentedly popular in Japan, but many people in America and around the world have also seen and loved the anime. "The imagery really strikes a nerve," says Sanders. "Those images became the cornerstone for us in developing the movie. We didn't reinvent it from the ground up, but we also didn't copy it frame for frame."

Sanders' intention was always to build a bigger film around the source material, while honoring the heart and philosophical essence as well as the iconic images that have made the story universally popular. "We kept the Geisha as our opening sequence," he says. "We kept the trash truck. We kept some of the Hanka Corporation, and many, many little things that as a fan I was obsessed with. Sanders preserved many of the iconic elements of the original. Although there are conversations about humanity, technology, and dualism, our film is primarily a journey of discovery told through a fairly straightforward detective story. Major is after a bad guy, which leads to the question, who is this guy? What's he taking and why is he taking it? But as she goes down this road, she starts to understand that her path and his path are closer than she thought."

Everyone involved in the film felt a tremendous responsibility to maintain the integrity of the franchise. Throughout the writing, development and shooting of the movie, the filmmakers referred back to the manga and the anime for inspiration. In addition, Mamoru Oshii, director of the two animated features, and Kenji Kamiyama, director of the television series, were invited to visit the set during filming in Hong Kong.

"Rupert has made his own version of this story," says Oshii. "This is the most gorgeous film made in the series so far. Rupert starts with compositions, colors and lighting ideas. As a director myself, I believe it's best for the director to do what he envisions, so I wished that for Rupert. Scarlett Johansson has gone above and beyond my expectations for the role of Major."

Sanders is proud to be part of the continuing Ghost in the Shell legacy. "We all felt it was important for us to become part of that culture," he concludes. "We had someone from Japan with us the whole time we were shooting the film. We wanted to be a part of this line of storytellers, and we wanted them to be a part of our project."

Opening across the Philippines on March 29, Ghost in the Shell is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

(Performance Videos) Noven Belleza Wins Tawag Ng Tanghalan Grand Finals on It's Showtime

Noven Belleza, a rice farmer from Negros Occidental emerged as a winner in Tawag Ng Tanghalan Grand Finals held Saturday, March 11, at Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts World Manila in Pasay City.

Noven bested 5 other equally powerful vocals namely Sam Mangubat, Froilan Canlas, Pauline Agupitan, Marielle Montellano, and Carlmalone Montecido.

He won P2-million, House and lot, Negosyo package, Star Music contract, Family vacation package, Musical instrument package, among others.

Noven endeared himself to viewers of "Tawag ng Tanghalan," not just for the sincerity in the way he performs, but also for his dogged determination to pull his family out of poverty.

He said that his family only lives off a weekly income of P1,000, and that he sacrificed his own education so that his younger siblings can get decent schooling.

"Minsan naiinggit din ako sa mga ka-edad ko dahil sila libro iyong hawak, ako, kalabaw at pang-araro," he told the show. "Pero kailanman ay hindi ko ikakahiya ang pinanggalingan ko kasi dito ako naging matibay."

"Tawag ng Tanghalan" is the first nationwide talent search that Noven has joined.

Check out his #TNTAngHuLingTapatan performances below:

Meet the 6 Grand Finalists of Tawag ng Tanghalan Froilan, Sam, Marielle, Pauline, Noven and Carlmalone

After more than a yearlong search, the rebooted "Tawag ng Tanghalan" has finally found its grand finalists.

Get to know each one of them more below:

Pauline Agupitan

A teen with a booming voice, Pauline hails from Lipa City, Batangas. At 15, she is the youngest among the finalists. Despite her age, she has already joined a number of local amateur singing contests. She was part of 2011's "Pilipinas Got Talent" and TV5's "Talentadong Pinoy Kids," and auditioned for "The Voice Kids."

Born in underprivileged conditions, she joined "Tawag ng Tanghalan" with the hope of providing a new home for her family.

In a previous episode, Pauline was praised by Batangas 6th district Rep. Vilma Santos who told her: "Malaking malaking karangalan po na dala po ni Pauline ang pangalan ng Luzon, pangalan ng Batangas, at especially ng lungsod ng Lipa."

On Friday, in an effort to clinch a grand finals spot, she earned a standing ovation from the judges for her hair-raising rendition of "Unchained Melody."

Noven Belleza

A rice farmer from Negros Occidental, Noven endeared himself to viewers of "Tawag ng Tanghalan," not just for the sincerity in the way he performs, but also for his dogged determination to pull his family out of poverty.

Froilan Canlas

Froilan is a lot of things: a caring son to his single mother, a music teacher, and an instructor who teaches volleyball to impoverished kids along with his charity group.

But perhaps most notably, he's an artist who likes to put his own stamp on OPM classics. Take for example his cover of "Anak," which earned him a near-perfect score from the judges and a place in the grand finals. He added syncopated drumbeats and flute sounds to the already folk-ish rhythm, and even took the vocal notes higher to make his performance stand out.

His penchant for experimentation has made the Camarines Sur native a firm favorite to win the singing contest.

Carlmalone Montecido

Being born blind did not stop Carlmalone from pursuing his dream to become a singer. He first tested the waters of nationwide singing contests when he joined "Pilipinas Got Talent" and finished in the semifinals.

In "Tawag ng Tanghalan," his wide vocal range allowed him to surprise judges with performances such as the one that helped him to clinch a place in the finals. Ditching his balladeer persona, he unleashed a gravelly voice he hadn't previously shown when he covered Freddie Aguilar's "Estudyante Blues."

He aims to become an inspiration to people with similar physical disabilities.

Sam Mangubat

Prior to joining "Tawag ng Tanghalan," Sam was already a YouTube celebrity of sorts, uploading song covers as part of an online duo called "Sam & Jun." But he quickly became a darling of the singing contest thanks to his boyish charms and impressive showmanship.

He earned his place in the finals with his concert-worthy performance of Sarah Geronimo's "Kilometro" that had most of the studio audience singing along and the judges fawning.

As of writing, his YouTube channel, boosted by his stint on "It's Showtime," has more than nine million views combined.

Marielle Montellano

Marielle, 17, is the second youngest among the finalists. She squeezed into the finals after scoring a tie with Agupitan on Friday's episode of the singing contest, where she performed a pitch-perfect cover of "Himala."

Back in 2010, Marielle figured in a motorcycle accident with her father and fractured her skull. She has repeatedly expressed her gratitude that she managed to survive the crash, and is determined to make the most out of her "second life."

Original article published on ThePulse.ph

It’s time to celebrate everyone! The Philippines’ best fashion magazine MEGA has finally released their much-anticipated March 2017 cover of the 15-year-old Fil-Aussie actress Ylona Garcia.

In it's featured article MEGA wrote:

Ah, to be young… Just as we get comfortable with the overruling Millennials, the new set of future greats are ready and raring to burst into the scene. Say hello, Gen Z. With an electric undercurrent and a fired up potential, let’s get familiar with them through the perfect front to the movement, rising superstar Ylona Garcia (@ylonagarcia). You waited, you played along and now here it finally is. This cover is exclusively available for download on Magzter.”

“While some of us look at youth wistfully with fond nostalgia, there throbs a buzzing energy from those who are actually living out their youth. A reminder of what once was for most, the youth reminds us of that give-it-your-all, fall-hard-and-hit-a-ditch period of time that made us go bonkers. After all, this was the time we ran ourselves to the ground, sabs hesitations and safety nets. Or as the kids these days call it, #YOLO.

This month, MEGA encapsulate and recreate the ease and earnestness of youth, with flashes of searing hyper brights, remixed florals and a forthright downtown cool girl vibe. Fashion, beauty and features take heed from the young’uns as the pages get filled with everything that is new, now and next.

Stepping up as the voice of the Gen Z, Ylona reveals a sense of refinement and wisdom that is well beyond her years. The youngest (so far) to front the cover, she bears the flag of the future and waves it proud as if saying, the future has come.It is forthright to realize that not only are the kids alright but that the future is in good hands. We taught them well, now we let them lead the way.

Dan Stevens is a Prince Transformed by a Curse in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Attaining global stardom and acclaim for his performance as the dashing Matthew Crawley in the Golden Globe®-winning drama Downton Abbey, Dan Stevens now stars in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, opposite Emma Watson’s Belle.

The British thespian plays the Beast, a spoiled and arrogant Prince transformed by the curse of an enchantress.

Of particular importance to the filmmakers was determining the fine line between man and beast, as there are moments when rage overwhelms the character and makes him more beastly, yet there are other times when he is quite gentle.

“[Director] Bill Condon and I spent a lot of time talking about how we could add some nuances to my character to make him more dimensional than the Beast from the animated film,” says Stevens. “It was quite interesting, trying to find those little human beats that would make him less animalistic and more a human trapped inside this creature.

Says Condon, “I’m a big fan of Dan’s…he’s got this amazing range. Taking this part on was taking on a lot more than just playing a role because of all the incredibly complicated technical things he had to face and the trust he had to place in everyone around him that all that work he did would shine through in the end. It takes a certain kind of character to be willing to do that.”

Stevens also had several profound discussions with Watson as to the mindset of their characters and the balance between good and evil and masculinity and femininity. He explains, “I was very keen on trying to calibrate the Beast according to the Belle that she wanted to be and to play, and we ultimately ended up realizing that this tale is not so much about beauty and ugliness but about the beauty and the beast that live in all of us and learning to live with that balance.”

The role is an incredibly challenging one, as Dan has to bring the Beast to life even though he is represented on screen digitally,” adds producer David Hoberman. “The Beast is a fully-digital character created through performance and facial capture technology, and Dan is able to beautifully convey both the Beast’s humanity as well as his beastliness.

To create a realistic looking Beast in a real-world environment while maintaining Dan Stevens’ performance, a combination of physical performance capture and MOVA facial capture technology was used. For the physical performance capture portions, scenes of the Beast with the live-action cast members were filmed on practical sets with Stevens wearing stilts and a prosthetics muscle suit with a gray bodysuit on top. Scenes of the Beast with the animated household staff were filmed with Stevens wearing a fractal gray bodysuit with visual effects indicators. And despite the restraining attire, the actor is able to convey a complex range of emotions, which was crucial, as the Beast is the romantic lead and the emotional center of the story.

Says Bill Condon, “Dan brings such warmth and nuance to the character and was able to evoke all of the pain and the humanity that was still there and give a powerful performance, which is told predominantly through his eyes and voice. It was really quite astonishing.”

Emma Watson Captures Our Heart as Belle in BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Known to global audiences as the spunky and smart wizard Hermione in the Harry Potter franchise, Emma Watson is now poised to be fondly remembered as Belle, the shrewd villager who yearns for adventure, in the live-action retelling of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

For over a decade, the British actress has charmed audiences playing the quick-witted and tenacious Hogwarts student in the Potter films and in films including The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Noah and The Bling Ring. In addition, she has a highly-visible role as a human rights activist and global goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, something which has become her life’s calling.

Of all the female characters in all the Disney films, she has always been drawn to – and most identifies with – Belle.

I have loved ‘Beauty and the Beast’ since I was four years old,” she says. “I remember Belle as this feisty young woman who spoke her mind and had these ambitions and was incredibly independent and wanted to see the world. And she had this relationship with the Beast where they were just toe to toe and that, to me, just seemed like such a terrific dynamic and interesting kind of relationship that I’d never seen before in a fairy tale.

Prior to 1991, most female characters in animated films were viewed as passive and somewhat one-dimensional, but Belle broke the mold. She is interested in literature, has thoughts of her own and is not easily intimidated, and quickly became an empowered role model for girls around the world and the first contemporary feminist heroine in an animated film. “Belle is someone who doesn’t really care about becoming a princess,” says director Bill Condon. “She’s more interested in seeing the world and figuring out who she is than in finding a man and getting married.

Not only does Belle herself love reading, but she also loves sharing her passion for books. Says Condon, “We all know how intelligent and worldly and sophisticated Emma is, and while that doesn’t describe Belle, it is what Belle aspires to be, and it is the innate intelligence that Emma brings to the role that is such a crucial element when you’re doing a live-action film.”

Ryan Agoncillo and Vic Sotto Join Jessica Soho, Mike Enriquez, and Ryan Agoncillo in Reader’s Digest ‘Most Trusted’ Personalities 2017

For the nth time, Kapuso’s most respected news personalities Jessica Soho and Mike Enriquez are named “Most Trusted TV Presenters” in the latest issue of Reader’s Digest elevating them to the Hall Of Fame.

Joining them in the elite list of “Most Trusted” honor roll are Vic Sotto, Toni Gonzaga, and Manny Pacquiao.

The biggest surprise in this year's Trusted Personality Award in the Philippines is the inclusion of Ryan Agoncillo who is touted as Most “Trusted Dabarkad.”

This has to be the most special (award) to date, because Miss Jessica, and Sir Mike were my bosses when I was still in public affairs. I think I was just 19 or 20 back then and I really look up to them,” Ryan told THE STANDARD in an interview after receiving the award.

The fact that it was from Readers Digest, a magazine I grew up reading, and to be able to share the stage with my former mentors, it really means a lot. It’s not just an award that takes into account what you have accomplished on TV, but more importantly because it means you were voted by the readers because they TRUST you,” he added.

Sa ingay ngayon where everyone with a cellphone basically has an opinion, masarap ang pakiramdam na maihilera sa boses na talagang pinagkakatiwalaan like Sir Mike and Miss Jessica. It really feels good to be sharing the same title with them.

The accompanying story in the latest issue of Reader's Digest noted how Ryan began his career at age 15 as a commercial model, appearing on billboards and magazine covers and TV commercials before venturing into television and movies, in the process winning awards?

Hosting is my job,” Ryan told Reader's Digest. “The running, photography and motor sports are my hobbies, but my life will always be my kids.”

Ryan should also get “An Ideal Family Man” award, as his wife, Judy Ann Santos and their kids (Johanna Louis, nicknamed Yohan; Juana Luisa, nicknamed Luna; and Juan Luis, nicknamed Lucho) would attest.

In order to raise our children well, we have to be the people we want them to be, so thank you Readers Digest for validating our efforts in trying to raise people with integrity.”

Now on its 19th year, the Trusted Brands Survey has become a benchmark in the industry for recognizing the brands and services Filipinos trust, above all others. It also honors the country’s most trusted personalities with the TV news Presenter, Radio News Presenter, and Entertainment/Variety Show Presenter category.

This year the RDTB awards added six more categories, to reflect the changes in the market and recognize the new brands that have made an impact on the consumers buying habits. Among the new categories added to the Trusted Brands awards are Bakery/Pastry Shop; Dog Food; Remittance Center; Pawn shop; Coffee Shop/ Café; and Optical Shop.

For nearly two decades, we have been surveying consumers in major markets across Asia such as the Philippines, to ask them about the brands they believe and expect to provide premium value and exceptional service,” notes Ms. Sheron White, Group Retail and Advertising Sales Director Reader’s Digest Asia Pacific.

These respondents are not only composed of Readers Digest subscribers but also of random consumers and we rely on their answers as to which brands deserve their loyalty, support and most importantly their trust. Not only have we learned which brands consumers follow, but more importantly how important trust is in the hearts of people across Asia.”

As such, being included in this prestigious list is a huge endorsement and one the winners should be very proud of,” Sheron added.

TRUST AND INFLUENCE

While certain brands sign famous celebrities to create a buzz about their products, the recipients of the Trusted Brand awards have gotten the endorsement of the most important people of all - their loyal consumers.

Much like loyalty, trust is something not easily measured by trends or likes on social media. Brands have to work for it for many years and goes hand-in-hand with a good reputation and delivery of customers’ expectations. It emerges out of the very best consumer experiences, and is achieved only by truly understanding your customers and not by mentions and hashtags.

Trust is that emotion that helps us in making our final decisions whether we are conscious of it or not - it is that intangible quality that we associate with reliability and integrity. Whether it is a product or service, trust is what reassures us that we are making the right choice,” said Sheron.

The Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand mark has become a trusted recognizable symbol globally. And we are honored to announce the winners of the latest survey, who will now be able to use this badge of recognition for 2016 to help consumers make the right choices.

Platinum Trusted Brand Awards were given to brands that performed exceptionally, winning their category with a score that vastly outpolled their nearest competitor.
