Constance Wu and Henry Golding Steal Your Hearts in “Crazy Rich Asian”

Warner Bros.' new romantic comedy "Crazy Rich Asians" takes a fun, engaging and hilarious look at what can happen when young love collides with old money.

Singapore's favorite son, Nick Young (Henry Golding), proudly brings his beautiful and successful New Yorker girlfriend Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) home for a meet-and-greet, but the family dynamics aren't quite what she expects.  For Rachel, what starts as a dream romantic holiday with the man she adores becomes a battle to remain true to herself and her roots, while holding her own against picture-perfect backstabbing rivals and a prospective mother-in-law who thinks this modern American girl will never measure up.

Set in Singapore and featuring the first all-Asian ensemble in a contemporary Hollywood film in 25 years, the story mines humor from the idiosyncrasies of one family in a way that people everywhere can relate to—no matter who they are, how much money they have, or where they call home.  It taps into the fundamental desire to fit in, while honoring your own identity, in an era of blending—and sometimes clashing—cultures.

As Rachel's friend tries to warn her: these people aren't just rich.  They're crazy-rich.  And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Constance Wu, who stars as the intrepid Rachel, describes her as "a college professor raised by a working-class, single mom.  For many people, that's a point of pride, but not for the Youngs.  Their pride comes from legacy.  I don't think the story says one value system is better than the other, but shows those cultural differences and the differences between Asian and Asian-American, that are often overlooked.  What I love about Rachel is that when things get tough she has the courage to follow her heart and forge her own path, in ways that are tested, but, ultimately, make up who she is."

It's a test for Nick, too, even though he knows what's coming.  "Having decided that Rachel is the one, he first has to get over the speed bump of bringing her home," says Henry Golding, making his feature film debut as Nick.  "He's afraid if she sees how he was brought up, she might think he's not the guy she fell in love with.  Also, once home, he sees more clearly the forces conspiring to tear them apart and how standing his ground will affect them both."

At its core, "Crazy Rich Asians" is a love story…a kind of savvy Cinderella tale, complete with a charming prince, a magnificent castle, and a battle of wills between two strong women determined to write their own ending.   "I definitely see this as a modern-day, aspirational fairytale," states Chu.  "Rachel is our princess-warrior, and this is her journey to discover who she is—an American girl on her first trip to Asia, who comes away with a deeper appreciation not only of her past, but of her future."

"Rachel is the way in for audiences," says Wu.  "We see everything through her eyes.  She's living a regular life, meeting her boyfriend for karaoke, et cetera, after work.  Everything she has she has earned through hard work, and she's remained humble and appreciative.  So, when she's thrown into this world of wealth unlike anything she's ever known, it's hard to fathom. Rich is something many of us have seen before: rich means you can buy whatever you want.  Wealth means you can buy whatever you want and you control the market."

On the plus side, Wu points out, "Rachel and Nick really love each other.  Love transcends class and culture and logic.  When someone's your person, you know it, and that's what Rachel and Nick are to each other."

But will that be enough?

In Philippine cinemas August 22, "Crazy Rich Asians" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Entertainment Company.

Gretchen Ho Named “Happinews” Ambassador of “The Happinews Project”

Over a hundred students turned a rainy Friday night into a bright and sunny one as they listened to inspiring talks on positivity and kindness in the launch of "The Happinews Project" at the University of the Philippines (UP) Bahay ng Alumni in UP Diliman.

"The Happinews Project," is a movement that encourages Filipinos to post and share positive stories on social media as a way to counter the bad news and negativity that proliferate online. Currently, over a thousand people have joined the Facebook group of The Happinews Project, which will also go to the University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University to spread the good vibes to more people.

Fresh from her London trip, "Happinews" ambassador Gretchen Ho recounted how losing her bag in a foreign land and being locked out of the place she was staying in actually led to good things.

"I lost my belongings but I also witnessed first-hand the kindness of Filipinos who volunteered to help me. Even if what happened to me was bad, there was still a better side to the story," she said.

Gretchen added that it is "happy news" like this that should circulate more on social media.

"We should share more happy thoughts, happy stories, happy news, in a world that's full of bad news and conflicts. We need a breath of fresh air. Why don't we highlight instead these small acts of kindness," she explained.

In her talk, Dr. Rosel San Pascual of UP pointed out the incivility among people that has made social media an even more toxic place. She said that people should learn how to express disagreements "intelligently, passionately, and respectfully."

ABS-CBN Creative Communications Management division head Robert Labayen, an advertising legend who leads the team behind ABS-CBN's well-loved Station IDs, also advised the students, who were mostly communication and business majors, to use positive communication when creating a brand.

"It builds a warmer relationship with your audience. If you make them feel good about themselves, they will feel good about you," he explained.

UP alumnus Miggy Bautista, meanwhile, shared how positivity was key for him in getting through college with flying colors, even as a person with a disability. Gawad Kalinga's Issa Cuevas-Santos, on the other hand, reminded the students not to put too much pressure on themselves when it comes to making a difference in the world.

"You don't have to be the superhero every single time. You just have to be the good one. Being good is enough because it inspires others to do good," she said.

Apart from the inspiring talks, the students also enjoyed fun booths like a freedom wall, photo booth, and games in the event, which was held in partnership with UP Ad Core.

Joshua Ambrosio, president of the student organization, said they were happy to help share an interesting advocacy to the UP community.

"A lot of times when you are in school, you get tunnel vision. You are so focused on what you are doing that you forget to see like other happy stuff outside and your immediate experiences," he said.

Loudette Tejada, a business administration major, also praised The Happinews Project, which is an initiative of the ABS-CBN Integrated News & Current Affairs.

"It's good that we are inviting more people to join the Happinews group. I really think it is a good way to engage people to share the happy vibes," she said.

“Pareng Partners” Captures Viewers with Relatable Topics and Stories

More and more Filipinos around the country are spending their weekends with broadcast journalists Anthony Taberna and Jorge CariƱo on "Pareng Partners" as they tackle the most relevant and important issues to Filipino families every Saturday on ABS-CBN before "TV Patrol Weekend."

With the fourth episode coming up, the show continues to engage viewers who are very happy to see fellow ordinary people being able to express themselves on television and discuss their day-to-day life and concerns like the ideal size of a family; life in the province versus life in the city; the struggle of dealing with daily traffic; budgeting a minimum-wage income; the rising cost of living; and coping with "petsa de peligro."

According to netizen Joan SP on Facebook, the show is "Inspiring, real, and raw. No sugar-coating, and it shows the life of 'Juan dela Cruz,"  while Twitter user @ran_darklord13 said the show is "Very informative and gives an in-depth look at the real lives of Filipinos."

The premiere episode, which featured anchors Anthony and Jorge back in their hometowns to talk about life in the province, was especially memorable for Anthony, who grew up on a farm in Nueva Ecija.

"I'm a farmer by blood, I grew up in the fields and caring for pigs and cows," said Anthony. "I am extremely honored that this show has given me an opportunity to go back to my roots as a farmer boy, then as a reporter."

According to Anthony, the positive feedback and reviews from viewers motivates them to pursue even more topics and stories that Filipinos everywhere can relate to, as he and Jorge go back to their days as field reporters.

"We want to be able to tackle topics that concern our viewers and ensure that they have a platform to air what they want to say," said Anthony. "If before, we would cover police, political, and even war beats, often with VIP's and public figures, this time we get to put the spotlight on regular people whose voices and opinions are equally important."

Jorge added, "As a journalist, I've realized that the most brilliant minds, caring hearts, and brave souls are often found in the regular people you meet every day. With this show, we let the people tell the stories themselves and hope they inspire others as well."

On this week's episode (August 17), the former DZMM Radyo Patrol reporters talk to senior citizens about the "growing pains" that come with retirement. Is getting older in the Philippines indeed a walk in the park filled with rest, relaxation, and enjoying grandchildren—or does it mean facing more financial trouble and  uncertainty?

Spend your weekends with Pareng Tunying and Pareng Jorge on "Pareng Partners" every Saturday, 5:15 pm before "TV Patrol Weekend" on ABS-CBN and ABS-CBN HD. Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia Give a Modern Take on a Classic Story in “Ngayon at Kailanman”

Their team-up was first seen in the Metro Manila Film Festival entry "Vince, Kath, James" in 2016, where they were teenagers that are new with the idea of love. Early in 2018, the loveteam popularly known as JoshLia has taken their viewers by surprise as they portray the role of two young adults exposed to the realities of life in the film "I Love You, Hater".

Now, Barretto and Garcia are ready to touch more hearts with their roles as they move from the big screen to the small screen and star in their first TV series "Ngayon at Kailanman".

"Ngayon at Kailanman" will tell the story of two people from different worlds, Eva and Inno, who will enter each other's lives and fall in love. However, destiny has other plans for them as their love will be tested by Inno's family, the Cortes clan, and the mystery behind Eva's identity.

The series is a combination of the classic story of a Filipino series and the modern eye on how the younger generation takes on the realities of life. It is a clash of preserving the conventional pass-on of heirloom and living a purposive life.

Part of the cast of "Ngayon at Kailanman" are some of Philippines' respected and renowned actors and actresses: Rio Locsin, Iza Calzado, Christian Vasquez, Alice Dixon, Ina Raymundo, Dominic Ochoa and TJ Trinidad. Also in the cast are two of Philippines' hottest young actors today, Jameson Blake and Joao Constancia.

Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg Back as Mavis and Johnny in “Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation”

Selena Gomez and Andy Samberg return to the roles of Dracula's daughter Mavis and her human husband Johnny in Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation, after the great experience of working on the previous two films of the franchise.

In Samberg's words: "I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the first movie, because it genuinely made me laugh and entertained me."

"I agree!" follows Gomez. "I love the animation, and it's nice to be a part of something that everyone can watch."

Always cool and optimistic, Gomez's character, Mavis, can do it all.  She handles all of her responsibilities – Hotel Transylvania assistant manager, wife, mom, daughter – with ease!  The one thing she wished she had?  More family time.  This cruise is just what she needed!  She can't wait to have a blast with Drac's entire Pack and get some quality time with Johnny, Dennis and of course her dad, Drac.

"I love making people laugh – it's the best feeling in the world," says Gomez.  "It's so great to have a family to come back to, and you never know what to expect with these movies – imagine the monster versions of shuffleboard, scuba diving, underwater volcanoes, moon tans on the beach – and it wouldn't be a vacation without a little adventure."

"I feel such an emotional connection with Mavis," Gomez continues.  "She's a mom who wants to bring everyone together and enjoy a relaxing time together with family.  Of course all family vacations are a mixed bag – that's what makes them funny.  But her heart is clearly in the in the right place."

Meanwhile, human Johnny always manages to stay mellow but he's stoked about the cruise's all-night monster music festival. What he doesn't realize is that the fate of all monsters will depend on his mid-90's DJ skills.

"Johnny may not have a lot of growth," admits director Genndy Tartakovsky, "but he always has that deep insight.  He's always fun and always keeping people on a really optimistic, positive side of life."

Comparing the experience of voicing an animated character with shooting live action, Samberg was clear, "I enjoy voicing an animated character because it's a freeing, crazy and literally cartoony experience. There are just less filters. And it's wonderful to improvise because it could be anything, and then they have the power to make it happen and animate the scene slightly differently. So, one of the most exciting things about the process for me is to know that if you add something crazy it can then come to life!"

And throwing the rest of the monsters into the mix just created a very entertaining dynamic again, without forgetting the underlining themes that are at the core of these movies. "There are so many films with the same old perceptions about monsters, but I believe that many people can also relate to those who are outcast or feared," says Gomez. "So I love that these films have always been about self-acceptance and being different, which I think is a message that is more relevant than ever now."

Concludes Samberg, "There is definitely a running theme in all these movies about the fact that if you actually spend the time to get to know people or monsters, you may realize that they are not really what you are afraid of."

In Philippine cinemas August 22Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
