TFCU Talks Aims to Connect, Inspire, Empower the Youth in Australia

Coming from its successful first international leg in Manila last March 2017, TFCU Talks now flies to Sydney, Australia for the very first "TFCU Talks Sydney", happening on April 7 at the Ballroom of Blacktown Workers Club (55 Campbell St. Blacktown New South Wales, Australia).

TFCU is an initiative which aims to connect, inspire, and empower Filipino college students and young professionals through the TFCU Talks event, which features industry professionals and personalities who share their stories that will help the Filipino youth realize their full potential while embracing their cultural identity.

There have been a series of TFCU Talks already held in the United States, which are the "TFCU Breaking the Mold" in Long Beach, California; "TFCU Talks Seattle: Live Your Legacy" in Seattle, Washington; "TFCU Talks Carson: Rise Up" in Carson, California; "TFCU Talks San Jose: Breakthrough to Greatness" in San Jose, California; the most recent "TFCU Talks Davis: Embracing Identity" in Davis, California; and happening soon is the "TFCU Talks New York City: Visionary Leadership" in New York City.

TFCU Talks has created a positive buzz one talk after the other, with its reputable speakers who are the likes of Food Network's "The Great Food Truck Race" season four winner Lanai Tabura, singer-musician-songwriter-recording-artist AJ Rafael, and tech entrepreneur and adventure journalist Garrett Gee of "The Bucket List Family."

On its second international leg happening this year, "TFCU Talks Sydney" anchors on the themePursuing Your Passion and taps the young Filipino-Australians by featuring three industry professionals who went out of their comfort zones and discovered their full potential.

Eman Rodriguez

At the young age of 12, Eman Rodriguez already knew his passion – breakdancing. He kept honing his skills, until he decided to join "So You Think You Can Dance" season 2 in 2009. Even if he did not make the final cut, Rodriguez kept going after his dream. He joined the dance group Justice Crew to compete in "Australia's Got Talent" in 2010, where they were hailed the season's champion. This opened door of opportunities for them, such as a record contract under Sony Music where they had several platinum hit singles.

After leaving the group to pursue a solo career, Rodriguez focused on developing his talents to fulfill his dream of being a multi-skilled entertainer. One of the skills he worked on is hosting, which he exhibited at the "10th BC ONE World Breakdancing Competition" and his YouTube show "REEL."

Aside from music and breakdancing, Rodriguez' other passion is football and in 2017, he joined the Philippine rugby football team "Philippine Volcanoes" to represent the country in different international competitions.

Gretchen Ho

People first took notice of Gretchen Ho in 2008 when she joined and became one of the star players of Ateneo Lady Eagles, the volleyball team of the prestigious Philippine university Ateneo de Manila University. Aside from the scholarship, Ho joined the squad to prove to her parents that she can juggle her responsibilities as a student while still pursuing her passion in sports.

After she graduated in 2013, Ho tried her luck in the news and entertainment industry in the Philippines where she discovered her gift and spunk for hosting. It may be a far cry from her image as an athlete, but eventually she learned the ropes. Now, Ho has several regular hosting stints in ABS-CBN's news programs like "Umagang Kay Ganda (A Beautiful Morning)," "TV Patrol," and ANC's lifestyle program "Modern Girls."

Marco Andre Selorio

Marco Andre Selorio is the man behind some of the popular dance competitions in Australia.Selorio is not new to the entertainment industry as he once was part of the children's show "Kulit Bulilit" (Curious Kids) in the Philippines. His acting career was cut short when his family migrated to Australia.

There he focused on his studies and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Commerce and Economics. He launched HOOPDREAMZ, a business that started by sending out newsletters for Sydney Kings basketball team. Eventually, it evolved into a company that organizes events that serve as platform for budding artists to showcase their talents, like the globally renowned "World Supremacy Battle Grounds" and the "GROOVE" street dance competition.

"TFCU Talks Sydney" will also feature an exciting performance from Eman Rodriguez with the JMA Dance Crew, choreographed by Maurice June. June is one of the founders of JMA Entertainment, the talent agency behind the popular Australian dance group Justice Crew.

"We are really excited to inspire the young people of Australia. We want to remind those who attend TFCU Talks Sydney that by living out their potential and pursuing their passions they can truly make a positive difference in the world," said Romeo Marquez Jr., TFCU Program Director.

Experience an afternoon filled with inspiring stories that will fuel your desire to fulfill your dreams at "TFCU Talks Sydney", happening on April 7, at the Ballroom of Blacktown Workers Club (55 Campbell St. Blacktown New South Wales, Australia).

20th Century Fox Releases “The Darkest Minds” Trailer

From the producers of "Stranger Things" comes the latest YA book-to-movie "The Darkest Minds" based on the book by author Alexandra Bracken and directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda 1&3).

Trailer links:  YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGyrqOIMp-Q&t=1s

         FB: https://www.facebook.com/DarkestMindsMoviePH/videos/436454993454969/

"The Darkest Minds" breaks out when teens mysteriously develop powerful new abilities, they are declared a threat by the government and detained. Sixteen-year-old Ruby (Amandla Stenberg), one of the most powerful young people anyone has encountered, escapes her camp and joins a group of runaway teens seeking safe haven. Soon this newfound family realizes that, in a world in which the adults in power have betrayed them, running is not enough and they must wage a resistance, using their collective power to take back control of their future.

"What blew me away about the story was the amazing, emotional core.  It was what made the book so resonant and memorable.  The characters are not soft-peddled, but show strength far beyond their years. This is a story about friendship and love in the face of a terrible threat… that even if the world falls apart around you, the strange adopted family of your closest friends can see you through. The actors felt that on set, and it was wonderful seeing their bond grow so tight.  This is a story of finding that light in the darkness, and the real reasons we have to fight," says director Nelson.

Likewise, producer Shawn Levy shares, "The Darkest Minds sits alongside our movie Arrival and TV show Stranger Things in being a sci-fi drama that's strongly rooted in character.  My colleagues at 21 Laps and I fell in love with Alexandra's novel several years ago, and its theme— of young people with powers coming to embrace their collective power — is more resonant now than ever before.  The fact that Jen Nelson's film communicated this rich theme within an action-packed thrill ride that's as poignant as it is fun – well, that's exactly the kind of movie I love to see and help make."

"The Darkest Minds" also stars Mandy Moore, Gwendolyn Christie, Harris Dickinson, Patrick Gibson, Skylan Brooks and Miya Cech.  The movie opens August 2018 from 20th Century Fox.

This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase F1 and attract new fans to the sport."

Inigo Pascual and DJ Moophs Collaborate with Summer Hit Single “On my way!”

Spring may have officially started in the U.S. though it still feels like winter in most places.  But with the latest collab track dropped by Billboard Philippines Top 20 chart-topper Inigo Pascual and DJ and music producer Chris Lopez a.k.a. Moophs, expect the duo to fan the flames of summer heat from the Philippines and bring it to American shores with their new single, "OMW (On My Way)".

This is not the first time that Pascual and Moophs have worked or performed together.  Both are coming off the high profile success of "One Music X" last November in Dubai, UAE which turned out to be one of the biggest music festivals of the year in the Middle East.  Just last weekend, the two also performed at the prestigious Coronation Night of the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant held at the historic Smart Araneta Coliseum in Metropolitan Manila.

When "OMW" debuted on YouTube on March 15 with hardly any publicity and promotions, it immediately garnered tens of thousands of views, scores of likes and positive comments.

"When I wrote 'OMW', I tried to put myself in the shoes of my 21-year old self, since that's where Inigo's at now," said Moophs. "What was my mindset 10 years ago? What was I worried about and what was I doing on the daily? I definitely wasn't the young superstar at 21 that Inigo is today! But I think a lot of the driving forces are ultimately the same: girls, music, finishing school, and having a good time with friends. I tried to write the song from that perspective: you wake up a little groggy from a fun night, get a text from your girl, and head over to her place. Simple!"

Moophs continued: "The vibe of the production for 'OMW' came from a blend of my tastes and Inigo's. I tried to keep it lighthearted and accessible with a drop that's fun but still slaps. 'OMW' is your twenty-something summer anthem."

While based in the Philippines right now asABS-CBN's International Music Content Officer and head of the Tarsier Records imprint, which was launched by Manila-based recording giant Star Music for international audiences, Moophs shares the Los Angeles feels and vibes with Pascual because both of them lived for years in the City of Angels.  Both have been exposed to the breadth of musical influences in the world's seat of entertainment.  When Pascual returned to the Philippines to try it out as an actor and singer, his first big break in music came when he composed and recorded "Dahil Sa 'Yo" (Tagalog phrase that means "because of you"). The song jumpstarted his career as a recording and live performing artist as it became the first number one song on Billboard Philippines' Top 10 Charts at opening, then holding the top spot for nine weeks.

Currently, Pascual's music resides in the genres of Pop and R&B. "I want to create music that helps people express their unspoken emotions; music that takes them back to a specific time in their lives, an anthem of sorts for a generation: music that gets people to dance, and entire stadiums to sing and shout," he said.

Check out "OMW (On My Way)" from Tarsier Records on YouTube and Spotify.

Visionary Novel “Ready Player One” Gets Spectacular Movie Treatment

Little more than 30 years ago, it seemed almost inconceivable that you could log onto a computer, create your own profile—true or not—and connect with people anywhere on the globe in real time. But what if, 30 years from now, you could log in, become your own personal avatar—true or not—and interact with people in an infinite virtual world? Consider the possibilities...and the perils.

That is the basic premise of Ernest Cline's bestseller Ready Player One, which captured the imagination of one of the most revered and successful filmmakers of all time: Steven Spielberg. "It's a huge, sprawling adventure that intercuts between two completely different worlds," he says. "I think Ernest Cline is a visionary who wrote of a future that's actually not so far away from where we're heading with the evolution of virtual reality."

(Check out the new trailer of "Ready Player One" titled Dreamer.)

The author credits Spielberg with being one of his greatest influences in creating his first novel. "It's hard to quantify what a profound effect Steven Spielberg's work has had on my life and my interests, but I could not have written Ready Player One if I had not grown up on a steady diet of his films. Just as anyone who grew up with a passion for movies in the 1970s and `80s, his work is woven into the fabric of my life. So much of it ended up informing the story and the way I chose to write it, and the evidence of that is seen throughout the book."

Warner Bros.' futuristic adventure "Ready Player One" is set in 2045, when people will have the ability to enter into a digital universe called the OASIS, where you go wherever you want, do whatever you like, be whomever or whatever you choose to be. With the population beset by unemployment, poverty, overcrowding, and utter hopelessness, "it's a good time to escape into a virtual world where you can live an extraordinary life through your avatar," says Spielberg. "All you need is an imagination, and that will take you far in the OASIS. But when you escape from reality, you're also, in a way, divesting yourself of any real human contact. So, the story is entertaining, but there is also a bit of a social commentary."

Cline reveals that his inspiration for the story came from some of the touchstones of his youth. "The initial idea came from the Atari game Adventure, which was the very first videogame to have an Easter egg in it—its designer, Warren Robinett, had created a secret room within the game that had his name inside it. It was my first time finding something inside a virtual world hidden by the creator of that world. It was a profound experience that really stuck with me. I was also a huge fan of Roald Dahl's works, especially the Willy Wonka books, and one day the idea occurred to me: What if Willy Wonka had been a videogame designer instead of a candy maker? I started thinking about all the riddles and puzzles this eccentric billionaire could leave behind to find a worthy successor, and I knew I was on to something."

Cline's eccentric billionaire became the character of James Halliday, the reclusive co-creator of the OASIS, played by Mark Rylance. "The entire world lives within his dream—the dream from which he built an entire world," says Spielberg. "But when he died he had no heirs, so he left behind a contest: the first to defeat three challenges, each rewarded with a key, and then find the Egg hidden somewhere inside the OASIS, will inherit everything."

The buzz surrounding the book Ready Player One was already at a high pitch when it was first published in August 2011. It not only lived up to expectations; it surpassed them in spectacular fashion. A runaway hit, the #1 New York Times Best Seller has been published in more than 50 countries.

"I wondered if perhaps the book would only appeal to people around my age who were nostalgic for the `80s," Cline continues. "But that has not been the case because it speaks to the way we live our lives now. Most of us have an actual identity and a virtual identity in the form of our social media profiles. And, not unlike the avatars in the story, you can shape those based on how you want other people to see you."

In bringing the novel to the screen, it was vital to the filmmakers to be respectful of the source material, as well as its many fans. "But," Spielberg acknowledges, "every book has to go through a process of adaptation when it goes from a literary work to a cinematic one. I think we ended up with just the right elements to tell a truly wonderful story."

"Ready Player One" stars Tye Sheridan ("X-Men: Apocalypse"), Olivia Cooke ("Me and Earl and the Dying Girl," "Bates Motel"), Ben Mendelsohn ("Rogue One – A Star Wars Story") and T.J. Miller ("Deadpool"), with Simon Pegg (the "Star Trek" movies, the "Mission: Impossible" movies) and Oscar winner Mark Rylance ("Bridge of Spies," "Dunkirk").

"Ready Player One" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

7 Reasons to Watch “A Series of Unfortunate Events” Season 2

Malina Weissman, Presley Smith, and Louis Hynes as the Baudelaires in Netflix's adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Photo by Eike Schroter / Netflix.

"Look away, look away…" goes the first line of A Series of Unfortunate Events' opening song.

But between that and Patrick Warburton as Lemony Snicket's constant reminder to the faint of heart to stop watching because a series of unfortunate events is about to unfold, anyone watching would want to stick around 'til each episode's unfortunate end. Unfortunate schmunfortunate.

When last we saw the Baudelaire orphans, they had just been dropped off by Mr. Poe at boarding school, their future bright and hopeful because Count Olaf was finally behind bars. But as we've seen in the trailer for the second season, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny's misadventures with the mysterious count are far from over.

This long weekend, binge watch A Series of Unfortunate Events, currently streaming on Netflix, with 10 new episodes set to premiere on March 30, Friday. Below are the Top 7 things to look forward to in season 2.

Photo by Eric Schroter / Netflix

Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf (and his many disguises!)
The costumes, the wigs, the accents -- watching Neil Patrick Harris play a different character every two episodes never gets old. He's so good at playing Count Olaf play new characters that we almost understand why the grown-ups in the series believe him to be a different person each time.

Photo by Joseph Lederer / Netflix

Kids in control
Having escaped Count Olaf four times in the past season, the Baudelaires (Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, and Presley Smith, as Violet, Klaus, and Sunny, respectively) are much wiser and more courageous this time around. And because they've had to listen to grown-ups shoot down their it's-Count-Olaf-in-disguise theories far too many times, they're also much more proactive and creative, taking matters into their own hands.

The Quagmire orphans
Why do the Quagmires have the same spyglass? Where is the third Quagmire? And why are their past and present so eerily similar with the Baudelaires?

The sense of humor
A Series of Unfortunate Events is based on reality, but it's an over-the-top version of reality. If some characters (the grown-ups mostly) seem to overact, don't roll your eyes -- it's intentional! But the best humor is in the dialogue. There's plenty of silliness and sarcasm to go around in this darkly comedic mystery that almost everyone gets to be funny -- yes, even the (not so) little (anymore) Sunny Baudelaire.

The new sets
"I love pushing the boundaries of reality," says showrunner Barry Sonnenfeld, whose past projects include the film franchises Addams Family and Men in Black, and the critical darling Pushing Daisies, a TV show known as much for its fantastical sets as it is for its unique story, much like A Series of Unfortunate Events. "All of this show is filmed on soundstages and the sets that they build are uniformly incredible. They're fully realized," says Harris. "It's as if you are in the greatest queue for a theme park attraction where every texture, every book, every lamp is exactly appropriate."

The guest stars
As seen in the trailer, Roger Bart (pictured) plays the vice-principal, a.k.a. Sunny's boss, in the Baudelaires' new school. Is he going to help the Baudelaires, or will he be like most grown-ups on the show and not see Count Olaf for who he truly is? Other guest stars this season include (but are not limited to) Lucy Punch, Sara Rue, Tony Hale, Robbie Amell, David Alan Grier, and Nathan Fillion.

The new adventures
Now that the Baudelaires are smarter and more experienced in Count Olaf's ways, the action is more suspenseful and intense. The new season is based on books five through nine of the novel series: The Austere Academy, The Ersatz Elevator, The Vile Village, The Hostile Hospital, and The Carnivorous Carnival.

All 10 episodes of A Series of Unfortunate Events season 2 will start streaming on Netflix on March 30, 2018.

ABOUT A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS SEASON TWO:
Based on the internationally best selling series of books, season two of the Netflix original series plunges further into the epic world of this darkly comedic mystery. Starring Emmy and Tony Award-winner Neil Patrick Harris, A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans – Violet, Klaus, and Sunny – and their extraordinary encounters with the devious Count Olaf who will stop at nothing to get his hands on their inheritance. Foiling his many dastardly plans and disguises, the young siblings discover clues to their parents' mysterious death, links to a covert organization, and begin to unlock long-held family secrets.

Malina Weissman, Louis Hynes, Presley Smith, Patrick Warburton and K. Todd Freeman (among others) return for season two. New additions to the cast include (but are not limited to) Lucy Punch, Nathan Fillion, Tony Hale, Robbie Amell, Sara Rue, Roger Bart and David Alan Grier. Featuring ten cinematic one-hour episodes, season two of A Series of Unfortunate Events launches globally Friday, March 30, on Netflix.
