Scarlett Johansson Plays a Cyber-Enhanced Perfect Soldier in GHOST IN THE SHELL

Tony and BAFTA winner and four-time Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson leads the highly diverse cast of Paramount Pictures' Ghost in the Shell, the live-action adaptation of the internally acclaimed Japanese manga.

In the near future, Major (Johansson) is the first of her kind: A human saved from a terrible crash, who is cyber-enhanced to be a perfect soldier devoted to stopping the world's most dangerous criminals. When terrorism reaches a new level that includes the ability to hack into people's minds and control them, Major is uniquely qualified to stop it. As she prepares to face a new enemy, Major discovers that she has been lied to: her life was not saved, it was stolen. She will stop at nothing to recover her past, find out who did this to her and stop them before they do it to others.

Johansson brings the central character an inner life that director Rupert Sanders felt was largely absent in her animated incarnation. "In the anime, the Major is quite distant and that's beguiling and mysterious," he says. "But with this film, we need to understand what she's going through. Our story brings the audience into what is happening with her internally and allows the character to grow.

"Scarlett brought a childlike quality to the character, which is very important because this is a Pinocchio story in a way," the director continues. "Scarlett's very clever at allowing us little moments where we're able to get into the character, then she pushes us away again. To me, Scarlett is the cyberpunk queen."

Producer Ari Arad notes that of all the film's characters, Major is the one whose life has been transformed the most by technology. "She revels in being the most extraordinary person in the world, but at the same time you get a real sense of the weight that she carries. Scarlett perfectly captures Major's emotion, humor and intensity."

Fighting cyberterrorism unexpectedly puts Major on a path to self-discovery, says Johansson. "Rupert and I talked a lot about her quest for self-identity and the need to know the truth about where she came from. This character comes to believe that she has both a life she's been given, and a life that she chooses. That's the real reason I wanted to do this film. Finding one's true identity, the feeling of isolation that is part of the human experience, as well as the connection that we all share - these are always relevant themes."

The actress was also drawn to the extraordinary visuals Sanders developed for the film. "That's what clinched the deal for me," says Johansson. "What he has created is not just an homage for the fans. There's a new feeling to this film. It's not the pristine future that we sometimes imagine. Humanity has engulfed itself, like a snake eating its tail. Cities are built upon cities, people made out of other people and computers."

Gerald Anderson Emotional on His 4,277th Finish at 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon

Kapamilya actor and well-known fitness and sports enthusiast Gerald Anderson, the Philippines' delegate to the recently concluded 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon held last March 19, was among the thousands who finished the race.

Gerald finished strong with a time of four hours, 25 minutes, and two seconds, placing at 4,277 among the 18,867 finishers.

Gerald, also the face of Skechers Performance's Go Like Never Before campaign, has been training since late last year for his very first marathon. On his 42k finish, Gerald says: "This is a goal that I really wanted to accomplish. My Skechers Go Run was incredibly responsive and comfortable to use. It propelled me to the finish line."

Crossing the finish line was a shining moment for Gerald, who says: "Proud ako sa sarili ko na natapos ko, and nakarating ako sa finish line. Ang layo pa ng tinakbo namin. It's really amazing." On running with different people from all over the world, he adds: "Ibang klase iyong community, talagang nagtutulungan. Kahit naguunahan yung mga tao, nagtutulungan kami".

Established in 1986, the LA Marathon is one of the largest marathons in the United States with over 18,000 participants. This year, The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon's Stadium to the Sea course saw runners race from Dodger Stadium across Los Angeles to a scenic finish just steps from the Santa Monica Pier.

THE DARK TOWER Movie Poster Leads You To Other Worlds

"There are other worlds than these," proclaims the tagline of the teaser poster of The Dark Tower, based on Stephen King's most ambitious and expansive story. The long-awaited big screen adaptation stars Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as Walter Padick.

In the film, Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor) is a young 11-year-old adventure seeker who discovers clues about another dimension called Mid-World. Upon following the mystery, he is spirited away to Mid-World where he encounters the lone frontiersman knight Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), who is on a quest to reach the 'Dark Tower' that resides in End-World and reach the nexus point between time and space that he hopes will save Mid-World from extinction. But with various monsters and a vicious sorcerer named Walter Padick (Matthew McConaughey) hot on their trail, the unlikely duo find that their quest may be difficult to complete.

The Dark Tower is directed by Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman & Jeff Pinkner and Anders Thomas Jensen & Nikolaj Arcel, based on King's novels. Producers on the film are Akiva Goldsman, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Erica Huggins.

ABS-CBN Recorded a P3.5B Net Income in 2016 vs. P2.5B in 2015

ABS-CBN, the country's leading media and entertainment company, reported P41.6 billion in consolidated revenue for 2016, bringing its net income to P3.5 billion, 39% higher than the P2.5 billion reported in 2015.

"We are very pleased to have exceeded our earnings guidance for 2016," said ABS-CBN Chief Financial Officer Aldrin Cerrado. "Full year growth in advertising revenues, boosted by election-related spending, was about 11%."

ABS-CBN adopted the cost per individual rating point pricing (CPIRP) scheme in 2015, which rewards the company for an increase in ratings. 2016 was its first full year of implementation.

"Our continued strong leadership in national audience share was also a key contributor to our record performance because improved ratings now translate to increased revenues," said Cerrado. "We have also been able to manage our costs and expenses efficiently."

Cost and expenses were up only 6% last year. In particular, ABS-CBN was successful in its continuing efforts to control production costs and reduced expenses by about 4% on a per hour basis compared to 2015.

Based on Kantar Media national TV ratings covering both urban and rural homes, the top 10 programs for 2016 for free-to-air television were all produced by ABS-CBN with "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" consistently topping all programs.

The company's roll-out of its Digital Terrestrial Television or DTT helped boost audience share with over 2.3 million boxes sold as of the end of December 2016.

Total assets rose to P72.7 billion as of the end December 2016 compared to P69.9 billion in 2015. The company's equity base increased to P31.7 billion as of the end of December 2016.

ABS-CBN Group CFO Ron Valdueza said, "We are also extremely happy with the performance of our subsidiaries last year. The healthy growth in our advertising revenues coupled with the accomplishments of our different business units enabled us to deliver record earnings performance for ABS-CBN."

"Star Cinema generated over P2.9 billion in ticket sales both here and abroad. 'Super Parental Guardians,' which was released last November, brought in more than P600 million in ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing Filipino film," added Valdueza.

SkyCable saw an 8% growth in revenues, driven by the introduction of SkyDirect, its newly launched Direct-to-Home Pay TV offering, and the continued sharp increase in its broadband subscriber base. By year-end, the company had over 112,000 SkyDirect subscribers and more than 200,000 broadband subscribers, bringing Sky's total subscriber base to over one million.

Consistent with the company's vision of touching the lives of Kapamilyas overseas, ABS-CBN Global staged "ASAP New York" at the Barclay's Center. Around 9,000 Kapamilyas were entertained by over 50 artists during the four-hour show. The Filipino Channel (TFC) is now being watched by over three million Filipinos abroad.

Kidzania, the company's educational theme park, has attracted over 360,000 visitors for 2016, while its TV shopping channel O Shopping generated over P820 million in sales.

UN, UNICEF Team Up with SMURFS to Celebrate International Day of Happiness 2017

Demi Lovato, Joe Manganiello and Mandy Patinkin today threw their talent behind a United Nations effort to end extreme poverty, address inequality and protect the planet against climate change through the Sustainable Development Goals.

The three voices in the upcoming film "Smurfs: The Lost Village," joined officials from the United Nations, UNICEF and United Nations Foundation to celebrate the International Day of Happiness and show their support for the Sustainable Development Goals at UN Headquarters in New York as part of the #SmallSmurfsBigGoals campaign.

The campaign is designed to encourage young people everywhere to learn about and support the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by world leaders at the UN in 2015. As part of the celebrations, Team Smurfs recognized three young advocates: Karan Jerath (20), Sarina Divan (17), and Noor Samee (17), for their actions in furthering issues addressed by the Goals.

Jerath invented a containment device that could prevent offshore oil spills and ensure the protection of marine life, and has since become a UN Young Leader for the SDGs. Divan expanded a UN Foundation girl empowerment initiative at her high school and beyond, and Samee is a UNICEF blogger and advocate challenging social justice issues and raising awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals.

ABS-CBN Receives 4th Paragala Awards Best National TV Station

Students from 31 universities in Central Luzon still named ABS-CBN as their TV network of choice, giving the country's leading media and entertainment company its fourth Best National TV Station award at the Paragala Central Luzon Media Awards.

Composed of 31 participating schools in Region III, the Paragala Central Luzon Media Awardsrecognizes the best shows and media personalities in the country as voted by students in Central Luzon. This year, the 4th Paragala Awards gathered 30,000 votes from the participating schools.

ABS-CBN hauled a total of ten awards for its various programs and Kapamilya news and entertainment personalities.

The Kapamilya network's news arm, ABS-CBN News, earned the Best Male Field Reporter award as conferred to Atom AraulloBest Female News Anchor awarded to Karen Davila, and its first-ever Paragala Merit Award for a Cultural Show for ABS-CBN Regional's "Bida Kapampangan."

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST Earns 1st Day Gross of P47.2-M, The Biggest for 2017 in Philippine Box-Office

Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” put a spell at the Philippine box-office, grossing an enchanted P47.2-M on its first day, March 16, and effectively breaking the record for the industry’s biggest opening day for 2017. This was announced today by a spokesman of the Walt Disney Studios Philippines.

“Beauty and the Beast” is expected to dominate the weekend, as ticket sales are being driven by nostalgia for the original 1991 Disney animated classic, and the recent popularity of live-action fairy tales.

The top five performing cinemas for “Beauty and the Beast” are SM North EDSA (P1.97-M), SM Megamall (P1.92-M), SM Mall of Asia (P1.70-M), Robinsons Magnolia (P1.14-M) and Trinoma (P1.13-M).

Rounding out the top ten are Glorietta (P924,983), Ayala Cebu (P887,006), SM Iloilo (P810,629), Greenbelt (P 784,796) and SM Cebu (P756,706).

Making it in the top twenty are SM Lanang (P752,254), Power Plant (P698,056), Alabang Town Center (P654,840), SM Bacolod (P602,910), SM Seaside (P602,202), UP Town Center (P597,165), SM Clark (P 593,540),
Shang Cineplex (P587,780), Robinsons Galleria (P586,096) and Gateway Cineplex (P582,283).


The story and characters audiences know and love come to spectacular life in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, a live-action adaptation of the studio’s animated classic featuring an extraordinary ensemble cast, including: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Audra McDonald, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Hattie Morahan and Nathan Mack with Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson.

Directed by Bill Condon and based on the 1991 animated film Beauty and the Beast, the screenplay is written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Alan Menken provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman as well as three new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice. The film is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman, p.g.a. and Todd Lieberman, p.g.a with Jeffrey Silver, Thomas Schumacher and Don Hahn serving as executive producers.
