RCMW Holds Alay Sining 2016 on November 11-13 at The Gallery Greenbelt 5 for the Benefit of Kids with Congenital Heart Ailments
The Rotary Club of Makati West (RCMW) is again holding its annual Alay Sining, an exhibit and sale of the works of the country’s leading and up-and-coming artists to benefit the treatment of indigent children afflicted with congenital heart disease (CHD).
Estimates report that about 5.5 million children all over the world are stricken with CHD, with about 94 percent of them coming from families who can least afford the appropriate medical regimen.
Children diagnosed with CHD suffer from weakness, high susceptibility to pneumonia and other respiratory and cardiovascular complications. They require multiple surgeries and extensive treatment – all of which can be costly.
Themed “Art with A Heart,” RCMW’s charity drive is now on its 9th year and is run under the auspices of the Gift of Life International (GOLI), an organization that arranges funding for the treatment of children with CHD.
In the Philippines, the GOLI charities are spearheaded by the RCMW. Through their tireless efforts, these children continue to receive the heart treatment and surgery for free.
The 2016 event is particularly special. As the number of sculptures being featured has indeed gradually risen, this year also marks the first time that paintings are included in the drive.
All artists extend their help generously and their numbers increase every year. Among those who have pledged their support are Glenn Cagandahan, Sam Penaso, Jaime Nepomuceno, Jojit Nagamos, Adel Agubang, Jinggoy Buensuceso, Kenneth Cobunpue, and many more.
The charity event is a perfect dovetail for the children who gravely depend on CHD medical procedures, as well as the artists who likewise naturally need to support themselves.
As in years past, the Alay Singing launch will be at the offices of DDB Group Philippines, at the 16 floor of Two World Square, Upper McKinley Road, McKinley Hill, in Taguig City.
Alay Sining 9 exhibit will be held at The Gallery, Greenbelt 5, Makati City on November 11-13, 2016.
For inquiries please call RCMW at 753-3098 and look for Kai.

The character posters of Warner Bros. Pictures' new fantasy adventure “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” have just debuted online, allowing fans to get to know the new heroes and villains much better.
Newt Scamander is a Magizoologist who has been traveling the world to find and document magical creatures, hoping to educate the wizarding world about why they are important and need to be protected. In his travels, he has rescued a wide variety of beasts, great and small, which he keeps in a case that magically provides more than enough room for the menagerie he cares for and protects. Newt is an outsider, a bit awkward, and more comfortable with creatures than his fellow wizards and witches. Hailing from England, he was once a student at Hogwarts but was expelled for endangering human life with a beast. Yet there was one professor who fought for him, a certain Albus Dumbledore. No one could have imagined then that Newt would someday write one of Hogwarts’ most important textbooks: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
Tina (short for Porpentina) Goldstein is a smart and determined witch who lives in New York and works for MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America). She was once an Auror but was demoted to a menial desk job after overstepping her duties when her heart overruled her head and she used unauthorized magic. She wants desperately to regain her status as an investigator, which puts her directly in the path of a visiting wizard named Newt Scamander. Tina is very close to her younger sister and roommate, Queenie.
Queenie Goldstein is Tina’s vivacious and slightly quirky younger sister, who is undeniably beautiful, but there is much more to her than meets the eye. Queenie works a menial desk job at MACUSA in the same department as Tina, but she doesn’t have her sister’s driving ambition to be an Auror. In fact, truth be told, the free-spirited Queenie would prefer not to work at all. Queenie has a good heart and would do anything for her sister. She is also a Legilimens, meaning she can read minds.
Jacob Kowalski is a No-Maj (American for Muggle) who works in a cannery but dreams of becoming a baker, making fresh and delicious treats. Unable to secure a loan, Jacob seems resigned to his fate, but everything changes when he encounters Newt Scamander and is inadvertently swept up in the mayhem caused by Newt’s magical beasts. At first, Jacob thinks he must be imagining things, but soon realizes he is on an adventure beyond even his wildest dreams.
Percival Graves is an Auror and the Director of Magical Security at MACUSA, making him one of its highest-ranking and most respected officials. When Graves discovers that Newt Scamander has made an unauthorized trip to New York with a case filled with forbidden magical creatures, he is very suspicious of his intentions and concerned about the potential to break the American wizarding world’s most important law: the Statute of Secrecy. Graves seems to demonstrate care and compassion to the young and particularly vulnerable Credence Barebone. But to what end?
Mary Lou Barebone is a No-Maj and the outspoken leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society (NSPS), otherwise known as the Second Salemers. Bent on exterminating all magic, Mary Lou fiercely crusades against the wizards and witches she is convinced live among them. She enlists in the effort her adopted children, who all live in fear of her wrath.
Credence Barebone, the adopted middle child of Mary Lou Barebone, appears withdrawn, extremely shy and far more vulnerable than his two sisters. Credence is defenseless against the abuse that comes in response to the slightest infraction of Mary Lou’s strict rules. But his loneliness also makes him susceptible to the manipulation of Percival Graves, who has taken a personal interest in Credence.
Seraphina Picquery is the President of the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA). She strictly enforces the Statute of Secrecy—meant to protect the hidden American wizarding community from No-Majs. However, mysterious events are now threatening to expose them, which President Picquery fears could lead to war. The arrival of Newt Scamander, with his case full of forbidden magical beasts, only complicates matters, and she directs MACUSA’s Director of Magical Security, Percival Graves, to deal with it. A graduate of America’s Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Seraphina revealed her promise early in life when she became one of the extremely rare students to be offered a place in all four houses of the school. She chose Horned Serpent.
Gnarlak is a Goblin who owns The Blind Pig, an underground speakeasy that caters to certain elements of the wizarding community in Prohibition-era New York. He is a rather shady character, whose questionable loyalties can easily be bought, and who will double cross anyone…for the right price.
“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling.
The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved “Harry Potter” books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” written by her character Newt Scamander.
Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for a Philippine release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 17, 2016.
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare, Hiroyuki Sanada and Ryan Reynolds, Life opens across the Philippines in 2017.
Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research and their methods end up having unintended consequences, the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), Life is written by Paul Wernick & Rhett Reese (Deadpool) and produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn.
Executive Producers are Don Granger and Vicki Dee Rock.
Life is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

There has been a cauldron of activity bubbling in Nevada not only because it is a hotly contested swing state in the 2016 U.S. elections; it's also because it's four days to go before Philippine boxing legend and Senator Manny Pacquiao (58-6-2, 38 KOs) – coming out of retirement - goes up against World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Champion Jessie Vargas (27-1,10 KOs).
Joining a Pacquiao-headlined fight for the first time on November 5 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas is Nonito "The Filipino Flash" Donaire (37-3, 24 KOs) who will defend his WBO Super Bantamweight title against the undefeated Jessie Magdaleno (23-0, 17 KOs).
The fight – billed as The Legend vs The Champ - will be shown on November 6 at 4 a.m. in KSA and 5 a.m. in Dubai, live (with replays) via TFC.tv PPV subscription is at 80 SAR. The Legend vs. The Champ is also available viaOSN, ELife and Mozaic TV Powered by Ooredoo. In the U.S., it will be shown on November 5 live, distributed by Top Rank PPV.
In a recent interview with Stephen A. Smithand Max Kellerman on First Take on ESPN, Top Rank Founder and CEO Bob Arum claimed that far from being an easy fight for Pacquiao, Vargas could end up knocking out the legendary Filipino fighter.
"Jessie Vargas has become a terrific fighter," said Arum. "He has a trainer – Dewey Cooper – that has turned him from being a defensive fighter into an offensive force. And when he won the world title, he knocked out Sadam Aliwho is a terrific fighter, who was a member of the U.S. Olympic team, and he (Vargas) knocked out Ali cold. Let me tell you something: the way Manny fights and the wayVargas fights, if Vargas hits him – which he is capable of doing – he could knock Pacquiaoout. Remember, Vargas had Bradley out in the last round. The referee stopped the fight by mistake because he thought the 10th second was the bell."
Arum also told ABS-CBN in another interview: "I think you will see, one way or another, a knockout in this fight. And it's a lot becauseJessie will be fearless, and some people say reckless, and he will be going after Manny, to try and knock Manny out."
Vargas, who is 10 years younger thanPacquiao, said in an interview with ABS-CBN that "It's my time to shine. I'm going for a knockout. The minute that he (Pacquiao) gives me that opening, I'm taking it. The 8thround sounds very, very good to me."
The bold predictions don't end with Vargas; Magdaleno also had daring words to say against Donaire in an ABS-CBN interview.
"He (Donaire) is past his prime. He will be strong for about five rounds. Then he will fade and we will take over," Magdaleno claimed. Come fight night, Donaire will be 9 years older than his challenger. "Maybe I'll be the real Flash come November 5th," added Magdaleno.
"I'm proud of that fight (Donaire vs Magdaleno)," Arum added. "I think it's going to be a terrific fight. I think every one of these fights is going to be evenly matched, but I can see where people are saying that Donaire and Magdaleno will be a barn burner." Arum also noted that while Donaire is an experienced warrior, Magdaleno is "training like a beast".
Of course, Pacquiao and Donaire are aware of all the macho boasting by their respective opponents.
In an interview with Michelle Joy Phelps of Behind The Gloves, a very relaxed Pacquiaosaid, "I know him (Vargas) well. He fought in my undercard before so, I know him. I know what I'm going to do in the ring."
It is interesting to note that the only defeat ofVargas came in the hands of Timothy Bradleywho Pacquaio has beaten twice, the last time in April 9 of this year. However, Bradley'sunanimous decision win over Vargas was questioned after what many people thought was the premature halting of the fight whenVargas almost put Bradley out with a devastating punch in the dying seconds of the 12th round on June 27, 2015.
Meanwhile, Donaire is so confident against Magdaleno that he is already looking at career plans beyond November 5 which includes leaving the 122-pound super bantamweight class to return to featherweight category.
"The truth is that if I win on November 5th, the next thing I want to do is going against Leo Santa Cruz or Carl Frampton. I'm a warrior and I want the big fights. Expect me in big fights at 126 pounds," Donaire told Boxing Scene.
Ben Affleck stars in Warner Bros.' action-thriller The Accountant as Christian Wolff, a specially trained assassin who happens to be a math savant suffering from Asperger's Syndrome. Director Gavin O'Connor knew that Christian should have an idiosyncratic fighting style, forged by his childhood training and his personal penchant for order.
O'Connor maintains, "I wanted to approach the action through character, with the thought being when Chris got into a situation that required violence, he would eliminate the threat as quickly and economically as possible. It's math. It's 'How do I make my move and get them off the chessboard?'"
Conferring with stunt coordinators Sam Hargrave and Fernando Chien, the director explored various types of martial arts. Nothing quite fit the bill until they showed him an Indonesian method that is less widely known, called pentjak silat. "I immediately said, 'I want that," he recalls. "I'd never even heard of silat before, but it's incredibly efficient, so it served our purpose in a very cinematic way. We honed in on that form and built the action around it."
Hargrave and Chien, together with their stunt team, started training Affleck, keeping in mind O'Connor's desire to mirror Chris's persona in the action. Chien confirms, "His style needed to be almost surgical—very linear and direct. He wouldn't bounce around like a boxer. We mainly focused on silat, but because of how dynamic Ben needed to be in his fights, we also taught him judo, jiu-jitsu…everything from the ground up, but extremely stylized."
"This martial arts technique hasn't been seen in too many movies before so it felt fresh and new," Affleck says. "I loved the style, so I dove into training as hard as I could. I spent months ahead of filming learning elaborate fight choreography, which involved a lot of flips and throws. Performing almost all of the action myself was difficult and demanding, but, luckily, I had the benefit of some really strong coaches and stunt performers who came up with some cool and unique stuff for me to do. It was very intense, but when it all came together and was done right, it could be beautiful and elegant, even though it was brutal."
Chien acknowledges that Affleck, who came into the film right after portraying Batman, was already in fighting shape—just not in the same way that Christian had to be. "For that film, he became really buff and muscular, but this character needed to be slick and more quick—very direct and explosive—so we did more martial arts conditioning with a lot of dynamic movements."
Hargrove adds, "We had a small gym where we would go for about two hours a day. Fernando and I put him through his paces, making drills out of the choreography and having Ben practice them over and over again until every move became like second nature to him. We sometimes drove him to the point of exhaustion, but Ben never gave up. He put in the work and came back stronger every day."
O'Connor observes, "Ben had to travel different paths in making sure we got both the physical and emotional aspects of the character right, which was vital. He was working out every day and getting all the choreography down because he was doing most of it himself. In just a short amount of time, he had to look like he'd been studying his entire life, so it was a crash course for him and I think he did an amazing job."
Opening across the Philippines on November 2, "The Accountant" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.
Action superstar Vin Diesel works under the direction of Oscar-winner Ang Lee for the first time in Columbia Pictures' emotionally charged film, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.
Based on the acclaimed bestselling novel by Ben Fountain, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (newcomer Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad – contrasting the realities of the war with America's perceptions.
Diesel plays Shroom, one of Billy's sergeants during his tour of duty. "In Iraq, Shroom became one of Billy's best friends," shares Joe Alwyn.
"Shroom is written as a Zen kind of soldier who feels things deeply," observes producer Marc Platt. "He's a leader, he's a thinker and a philosopher and has a compassionate warmth about him but he's no nonsense at the same time. He's literally the heart and soul of this unit. When I thought about who you'd believe as a Zen philosopher and as a soldier, a big bear of a guy to a group of these Bravos, I thought of Vin Diesel. It was a perfect marriage of an actor and a role. And fortunately for all of us Vin is an actor who loves film and filmmakers, and one of his heroes is Ang Lee. I reached out to Vin and he reached back to me and he said thank you for making my dreams come true. We love having him in the movie and we love that he gets to play a character close to his soul."
"Shroom's a very interesting and challenging character in the movie, because he is the older, wiser soldier warrior within this group of kids," notes producer Stephen Cornwell. "The challenge of the role is to provide that quality of leadership and the sense of mysticism, and Vin's a perfect fit. He brings acting skills and a presence that really makes that character come alive, which is very important to establish and by choosing to play Shroom, Vin was looking to do something different and very challenging. We've come to a very remote place in the world to film the scenes that establish Shroom's position with the Bravos, and I think that Vin and Ang are having a fantastic time working together."
Vin Diesel's upcoming films include xXx: Return of Zander Cage, Fast & Furious 8 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Opening across the Philippines on November 09, "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk" is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
