23rd Congress Takes Inspiration from Filipino Brands the Successfully Gone Global

The Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), the premier organization of Public Relations practitioners, takes the PR practice to a renaissance as it brings back discussions to a global perspective at the 23rd PR Congress held recently at the Marriott Hotel in Pasay City in Manila.

According to PRSP President Ronald Jabal, there is a resurgence in the need to bring Philippine brands to the international market and speak to a global audience because of the evolving market landscape.  Jabal mused: "This Congress highlighted how PR can most effectively connect organizational plans and interests with the discriminating consumers and stakeholders outside the Philippines."

With the theme "Global Speak: Are You Ready to Take the Global Stage?" this year's PR Congress leveraged on the experiences of local and international brands which have made their mark overseas.

Speakers who shared best practices in terms of globalizing local brands and which effective communication can global brands take, include Jon GatbontonABS-CBN Global Ltd. global ad sales head and Dennis Lim, head of ABS-CBNDigital Media Services.

According to Gatbonton, speaking to a global audience is a continuously evolving process.  He shared: "From a group of eight to a group of four hundred we have come a long way and we still have a long way to go.  What we want to say is that where we are today is not just a function of the collective brilliance of all of these people…It's not us dictating where we are going. It is this market dictating where we are going."

Building on valuing what the market wants, Gatbonton adds that ABS-CBN Global takes into consideration that each market is different. "It was simple back then.  At some point the global Filipino market got so big, we had to figure out the market by geography.  But it was not dictated by geography alone.   It didn't stop there.  Years after, you realize that there are generations of Filipinos leaving in one Filipino household."

This market segmentation is key in terms of communicating with the audience according to Lim who shared that the common mistake of speaking to a global audience is in how tools are created for the approving parties, not for the actual consumers.  He explained: "People aren't seeking marketing copy.  They are looking for other people's experiences so they can humanize it, apply it to their dreams and aspirations."

However, before even going outside the homeland, Sky Cable Executive and immediate Past President of the PRSP Ramon "Bong" Osorio said that there is a need for Philippine players to look into themselves first – their resources and manpower. He said "We need to integrate our global communication operation to generate a tighter level of efficiency and control."  He added, there is a need to "put up a global communication network composed of people from various company departments."

Other speakers at the two-day congress included subject matter experts both from the public and private sector. Assistant Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry Arturo Boncato shared the current administration's efforts to ease the requirements for businesses planning to set upboth in and outside the Philippines.

Subject matter experts from the private sector provided interesting insights on what worked and what did not: Richard Spencer, chief marketing officer of iSENTIAKevin Tan, executive director of Alliance Global Group, Inc.; Jose Miñana JFC president for North America and Foreign Franchise Brands in the Philippines; Edelita Cuevas, Philippine Airlines head of Brand Management; and Cora Guidote SM senior vice president Investor Relations and Corporate Communication.

Providing insightful panel discussions were Margot Torres senior vice president for Marketing of McDonald's Philippines; Paolo Mercado senior vice president and head of marketing and Consumer Communication of Nestlé Philippines; and Dennis Perez senior brand manager, Hair Care SEAA, Unilever Philippines. Day two panelists who spoke on traditional versus new media included Anna Gokongweiceo of Summit Publishing, Inc.Thelma Sioson San Juan lifestyle editor of Philippine Daily Inquirer; and multi-awarded broadcaster Ces Drilon.

During her panel, Drilon revealed that with the speed of how technology delivers content and how the market consumes it, story gathering has also evolved.  Drilonreveals: "Many stories I've done were because I engaged on Twitter." With this, Drilon said: "A new entrant in broadcast journalism must know how to do everything – write, shoot and edit at the same time."

Lim affirms that innovation is necessary.  In fact, he reveals that ABS-CBN is now beyond television and is making the shift. "There's a realignment of content and it's presented to adjust to the changing times." He adds "Definitely, digital plays a big role for us entering bigger markets."

Truly, the PR practice has been evolving as the times, especially technology, has been changing, breaking old traditions and introducing new norms, both here and overseas.

Harold Geronimo, PR Congress chairman said that in order to make the cut, the Filipino companies need to be ready.  "Local brands who envision themselves to be global brands someday need to take the challenge of the evolving trends of the public relations and communications," he ends.

Rio Olympics Silver Medalist Hidilyn Diaz Shares Her Life Story

Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz brought honor to the Philippines and inspired her countrymen when she bagged a silver medal win in the Rio Olympics. But her road to victory and recognition had not been easy.

Find out how she braved through her struggles as she shares her moving life story, with actress Jane Oineza portraying her, in “MMK” this Saturday (September 24).

Hidilyn grew up in a poor family in Zamboanga City. Despite having to endure her days with a half-empty stomach, all she ever wanted was to her parents’ and siblings’ attention and love to get through her family’s struggles. Growing up, however, Hidilyn sensed that her parents played favorites among them. For example, she would always be asked to fetch water, even though she had an older sibling who should be doing it.

When she discovered weightlifting through her cousins in 2002, she invited herself to their training sessions and became addicted to the sport. She also had a rough start in the sport because she would use tree branches during practice instead of proper equipment.

It was not long until Hidilyn competed locally and internationally. The sport did not only give her recognition but also significantly helped her financially, helping her finish her studies. But in spite of being acknowledged for her outstanding skill in weightlifting, she could not help but feel unhappy and underwhelmed because her family seemed to be indifferent to her still.

In 2014, life became more difficult for her, as she experienced a series of misfortunes in her chosen sport, as well as her love life.

How did Hidilyn get through her life’s biggest challenges to win in the Olympics? Will Hidilyn ever get the affection and attention of her family she has been craving her whole life?

Johnny Walker PH Champions the Modern Day Filipino Heroes with #KeepWalkingPH Campaign

What makes a modern-day hero?

While other countries recognize a diverse list of heroes in the hundreds, in the Philippines, we struggle to find individuals whose stories resonate with today’s generation. This is because most of our heroes are old or have passed more than 50 years ago. This makes it difficult for us to find sources of inspiration that lead us towards our ambitions.

Lately, the subject of heroes has come up again, allowing us to re-evaluate the qualities needed to be deemed worthy of being called a hero. At the heart of every hero is ambition and Johnnie Walker wants to inspire this sense of heroic ambition through the Keep Walking Philippines campaign.

Keep Walking Philippines recognizes the ambition that sparked the great journeys of ordinary individuals we now consider modern-day heroes,” shares historian and campaign consultant Ambeth Ocampo. “Being a hero doesn’t always require grand gestures, but rather the ability to inspire and provoke others to dream and make the world better.

All around us are ordinary individuals whose journey to personal progress began with ambition. The stories of Xyza Bacani, former overseas domestic worker turned internationally acclaimed photographer and NYU scholar despite financial limitations; Aisa and Raphael Mijeno of SALt who created an alternative power supply for local communities using salt water amidst the lack of resources; and Brillante Mendoza, the Cannes-winning filmmaker who continues to reinvent Philippine cinema though often criticized for his choice of subject matter, become our inspiration to stretch the limits of our ambition.

The story of Johnnie Walker’s own rise as a global icon for personal progress also began with great ambition. “The story of John Walker resonates well with present-day Filipinos,” says Vanee Gosiengfiao, General Manager of Diageo Philippines. “It is one of humble beginnings undaunted by circumstances.

John Walker started a small grocery at the age of 14. He dreamed big and wanted to make a name for himself. He made his first blended whisky as a way of offering his customers a unique and consistent product. His whisky eventually became the world’s number one blended Scotch whisky brand.

After 200 years, John Walker’s legacy of ambition is still celebrated worldwide. The brand’s “Keep Walking” mantra has been adopted and embraced globally as a rallying cry for progress. To this day, Keep Walking continues to inspire people from all over the world.

Johnnie Walker now calls on all Filipinos to keep walking towards their greatest ambition. The Striding Man, the logo of a man who is moving forward, has been redesigned with the colors of the Philippine Flag, to symbolize the Filipino’s journey to pursue their ambition and to achieve greatness as individuals and as a nation.

Johnnie Walker recognizes the ambition of every Filipino,” says Gosiengfiao. “The campaign brings us together as a nation and inspires all us to keep walking towards our ambitions, no matter how daring and bold they may be.” says Gosiengfiao.

To bring these stories of ambition forward, Johnnie Walker has created a three-part mini-series that will give Filipinos an in-depth look into the lives of Bacani, Mendoza, and the Mijeno siblings, who despite the daunting challenges they’ve faced continue to Keep Walking. Theirs are but only three stories of countless Filipinos who have achieved success because they followed their ambition.

Jodi was recognized for her outstanding performance as Amor Powers in the 2015 remake of “Pangako Sa ‘Yo” and is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress category against Judi Dench (United Kingdom), Grazi Massafera (Brazil), and Christiane Paul (Germany).

SHELL Philippines Ends the Shell Bike Fair 2016 in Metro Manila with a Blast

The Philippines is home to a strong 4-million motorcycle community that still continues to grow everyday. The recent rise in number of motorcycle riders for the past couple of years has cemented the popularity of the two-wheeled vehicle, making it an indispensable mode of transportation for Filipinos all over the country.

Coming from a successful celebration of all things motorcycle last year, Pilipinas Shell takes things to the next level by hosting a bigger and grander Shell Bike Fair 2016. To show Shell’s appreciation for the motorcycle community, this year’s Shell Bike Fair is a series of three grand events in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The three-part celebration was made possible by Shell Advance, Shell V-Power Nitro+, and Shell Select.

Shell Bike Fair 2016

Last September 24, the third and final leg of the Shell Bike Fair 2016 was held at the World Trade Center through a day filled with games and entertainment for the company’s valued customers. Upon entering the world-class location, the attendees were treated to fun demos and games at the different booths set up throughout the venue.

Exciting performances by Imago, Gracenote, Mocha Girls, Callalily and Parokya ni Edgar plus other surprise celebrity appearances brought the house down, with the crowd partying along to their favorite hits. The event ended on a high note as several motorcycle clubs received special prizes and three lucky guests brought home their brand new motorcycles.

Partners on the road

Shell aims to demonstrate that it is a trusted partner of motorists in their every ride. Using Shell Advance can help provide easier engine starts, as well as long-term cleanliness and overall maximum protection, for a smoother ride on the road. Shell’s world-class lubricants go hand in hand with the use of Shell V-Power Nitro+, Shell’s premium performance fuels, which are designed to fight gunk and corrosion. And lastly, Shell aims to make every visit to a gas station worthwhile through the wide array of snacks, refreshments and hot meals that Shell Select offers for riders on the go.

For over 100 years, Pilipinas Shell's products and services have evolved to meet the current needs of Filipino motorists. We want our customers to know that Shell is every Filipino motorist's partner on the road. Aside from quality lubricants and fuels, offerings such as the Shell Select convenience store, Shell Helix Oil Change+, and other integrated services, Shell has evolved into more than just a gas station – it is a pit stop that fuels both you and your motorcycles,” said Anthony Lawrence Yam, Pilipinas Shell Vice President for Retail.
