A collaboration of Pinoy rock music icons and international recording stars
Smart Music Live will feature a coming together of who's who in the world of music such as Pinoy rock superstars Crwn, Up Dharma Down, Nathan Sykes, Autotelic, Aegis and Ely Buendia and British singer songwriter Nathan Sykes.
"Smart Music Live is just the tip of the iceberg because there's an entire roster of international acts to witness and experience in the coming months if you're a Smart subscriber. With Armi Millare as lead singer, Up Dharma Down's music is enjoyed by music lovers of all ages.

Nathan Sykes may be known for being part of the British boyband The Wanted but he is now a solo artist and songwriter with a top single "Kiss Me Quick" to his credit while Autotelic is a homegrown Filipino group popular for its dance rock tunes.

Who doesn't know Aegis and Ely Buendia? Aegis, with sister Juliet and Mercy on vocals, has inspired the hit musical Rak of Aegis. The group's songs, including "Halik," "Luha" and BasangBasa Sa Ulan," are Filipino sentimental favorites. Reader's Digest Trusted Brands 2016: Recognizing the Most Trusted Brands, Services and Personalities by Filipino Consumers

For Filipinos, the issue of choice has always been matter of trust. From the brands we put in our shopping carts to the services we rely on, Filipino consumers have a strong sense of brand familiarity – and that belief weighs heavily on the decision-making process.

Reader’s Digest (RD), one of the longest-running and most read print publications in the world, once again puts the spotlight on the companies we believe in at the RD Trusted Brands 2016 Awards ceremony held June 30, 2016 at the Marco Polo Hotel in Ortigas, Pasig.

The Trusted Brands Survey, identifies the brands and services Filipinos trust, above all others. It also honors the country’s most trusted TV news Presenter, Radio News Presenter, Entertainment/Variety Show Presenter and Sports Personality.

Trust is an emotion that fuels our decision whether we are conscious of it or not. It is that intangible quality that conveys reliability and integrity. Whether it is a product or service, trust is what reassures us that we are making the right choice.

For the past 18 years, we have been surveying the people of Philippines and consumers in major markets across Asia, about which brands they depend on, believe in and that they expect to provide premium value and exceptional service,” notes Walter Beyleveldt, Reader’s Digest Managing Director, Asia Pacific.

Every survey we ask thousands of people – both our readers and a representative sample of consumers in each market – to tell us which brands they consider worthy of their support, custom, and their trust. Not only have we learnt which brands consumers follow, we have discovered a lot about what trust means and how it wins the hearts of people across Asia.”

Being included in this prestigious list is a huge endorsement and one the winners should be very proud of,” he added.

Beyleveldt and Ms. Sheron White, RD Group Advertising & Retail Sales Director, Asia Pacific flew in from Australia to personally award the trophies to the winners.

Renowned motivational speaker and business influencer, Ms. Anna Esperanza  served as keynote speaker.

FOR CONSUMERS, BY THE CONSUMERS

Trust is a key component in the relationship between brands and their customers.

It is built on – and it builds – loyalty. And loyal customers, as any successful brand knows, are key to getting – and remaining – in competitive times.

Trust is hard won – it is usually built up over many years. Trust goes hand-in-hand with a good reputation and delivery of customers’ expectations. It emerges out of the very best consumer experiences, and is achieved only by truly understanding your customers.

Trust is an emotion that fuels our decisions whether we are conscious of it or not--an intangible quality that signals reliability and integrity. Whether it is a product or service, trust is what reassures us that we are making the right choice,” said White.

A trusted brand has both international appeal but also upholds a strong local connection. It has individual relevance for all its consumers, just about anywhere and in any culture,” she added.

The Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand mark has become a recognizable symbol globally. And we are honored to announce the winners of the latest survey, who will now be able to use this badge of recognition for 2016 to help consumers make the right choices.

For the 2016 Trusted Brand Survey, Readers Digest commissioned global market research company CATALYST.  Approximately 8,000 individuals were selected across 5 of Asia’s key markets such as the Philippines, HongKong, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

The survey covers 44 categories of products and services across a wide range of industries.

Around 1000 respondents were surveyed in the Philippines.  Half were subscribers to Reader's Digest, while the remainder were selected to reflect the demographics of the general population.

The final ranking in each product category were obtained by multiplying the total number of votes for a brand with its average score for six qualitative characteristics. For statistical accuracy and to ensure results were compiled in an objective manner using proven methodology, the data was weighted to reflect the population distribution of participants.

PLATINUM, GOLD AND ASIA AWARD

Platinum Trusted Brand Awards were given to brands that performed exceptionally, winning their category with a score that vastly outpolled their nearest competitor.

Platinum award winners included Baby Company (Baby Store); SM Supermalls (Shopping Center); ABSCBN (TV Network); Century Tuna (Canned Tuna); Monterey (Frozen Meat) Magnolia (Fresh/Frozen Poultry); Carrier (Air Conditioner); Uratex (Mattress); Boysen (Paint); Pilot (Pen); Executive Optical (Eye Center) and PLDT Home (Landline Phone Service).

Gold Trusted Brand Awards were given to brands that scored significantly higher than their rivals.

The Gold award winners are Healthway (Ambulatory Medical Services); Condura (Air Conditioner); PLDT Home DSL (Broadband Services); San Marino Corned Tuna (Canned Tuna); Baguio Oil (Cooking Oil); Citibank (Credit Card Issuing Bank); Asian Eye Institute (Eye Center); Ideal Vision (Eye Center); Medicard (Health Card); Acer (Personal Computer); Camella Homes (Property Developer); DMCI Homes (Property Developer); Condura (Refrigerator); GMA7 (TV Network); Panda (Pen); Sharp (Washing Machine) and Whirlpool (Washing Machine) to name a few.

Asia Trusted Brand Awards were given to a brand that wins Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand award in the same category for at least three countries surveyed.

Recipients of the Trusted Brand awards will receive given a Trophy and will be allowed to use the globally recognized Trusted Brand Logo in their marketing collaterals and merchandising materials.

MOST TRUSTED PERSONALITIES

Another highlight of the night was the special awards given to the countries most trusted personalities.

For the sixth consecutive year, Jessica Soho was named Most Trusted TV News Presenter. Mike Enriquez on the other hand was chosen as Most Trusted Radio Presenter. Toni Gonzaga won Most Trusted Entertainment/ Variety Show Presenter, while Filipino boxing champ and now Senator Manny Pacquiao is still the Philippines Most Trusted Sports Personality.

There are awards and there are awards, and the Reader’s Digest Survey, is in itself a trusted award. This is a result of a survey conducted among its readers and not an award that you can apply for,” says Enriquez.

They just write you one day to inform you that you have been chosen, and being named most Trusted Radio Presenter is definitely quite an honor.”

President Duterte Orders No Arrest, No Detention of Tanim Bala Victim

This is one very good news I can't help not to share. What former President Noynoy Aquino failed to put in action for the longest time, President Rodrigo Duterte did in a snap. Good job, Mr. President.
As reported by ABS-CBN News, the alleged bullet-planting scheme in Philippine airports may now be a thing of the past after President Rodrigo Duterte prohibited authorities from arresting passengers for bullets in their luggage.

Senior Superintendent Mao Aplasca, new director of the police Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup), said Thursday that travelers would not be detained or charged in court if an ammunition is confiscated from them, as per Duterte's order.

Passengers in possession of ammunition will instead undergo immediate profiling to clear them of links to any terrorist or criminal group, and of criminal intention in carrying the bullet.

They would be allowed to immediately board their flight provided that no firearm is confiscated together with the ammunition, Aplasca added.

"Laglag-bala modus operandi is a thing of the past and we assure the public that they no longer worry that they will miss their flight or get arrested at our airport for possession of an ammunition," he said.

The "tanim bala" scam allegedly involves airport personnel who plant bullets in unsuspecting passengers' luggage. Once the passengers are apprehended, scammers reportedly ask for money in exchange for their release and record-free passports.

Even before the presidential campaign, Duterte said if he were the country's president, he will have the perpetrators of the scam swallow bullets.

He had also urged President Benigno Aquino III to personally address the matter as this has caused embarrassment for the country.

Aplasca said the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), and the transportation department will form a joint team that will conduct regular security planning for airports.

Avsegroup is the main unit that maintains security in more than 80 airports across the country.

President Rodrigo Duterte Named 5 Police Generals Protecting Drug Lords

President Rodrigo Duterte, in his speech at the 69th anniversary of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) on Tuesday, July 5, revealed the names of five police generals who are allegedly protectors of drug syndicates.

Duterte named former Philippine National Police (PNP) deputy director general Marcelo Garbo, Jr., former director of the Police Regional Office 7 Bernardo Diaz, Edgardo Tinio, a former director of the Quezon City Police District Office and Joel Pagdilao, a former director of the National Capital Region Police Office and Vicente Loot, a newly elected mayor of Daangbantayan town in Cebu.

"As [of] this time, I order them relieved from their assignments and report to the director general [Ronald dela Rosa]," Duterte said.

Duterte said police officers who are involved in illegal drugs have committed treason, pointing out that their education was paid for government funds.

"All along, tayong mga mamayan thought we are being protected by the police," Duterte said.

"Ito yung mga tao who were given the honor to join the academies of our country, be it the PNP or PMA at the expense of the public and [made] a career there. Masakit pakinggan kasi ginastusan mo, pinag-aral mo, pati medyas at sapatos, gastos mo, tapos you commit, by any language, it is treason," he added.

Q&A with Anne Hathaway for 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'

Anne Hathaway returns as Mirana, the mild-mannered, kind White Queen, and the beautiful younger sister to the spiteful Red Queen, in Disney's fantasy adventure “Alice Through the Looking Glass” in Philippine cinemas July 6th.

In the film, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp).

Question: We get to see the backstory of the divide between the sister queens. Was it fun to go back in time and play that younger character with Helena Bonham-Carter (as the Red Queen)?
Anne Hathaway: It was fun to learn that she’s not perfect. I think she’s sort of lovely in the first one but a bit oppressively good so it’s nice to know that, like everyone, she’s got a past and she has regrets and she feels shame, she feels guilt and that you forgive her these things so I actually was really thrilled that we were trying to see what the emotions were about this character who looks so fantastical but then feels so believable.

Q: What kind of relationship did you have with Helena while filming? Did you discuss the scene together?
Anne: I think Helena is one of my favorite people on the planet. I think the world is better because she is on it. She’s so inventive and fresh, literally all the definitions of fresh. She’s got a wonderfully fresh mouth and she’s fearless and vulnerable and open and friendly and I admire her so much so it was really exciting for me to have more scenes with her this time around. Yes, I got to work with an incredible actor but also because I got to talk to her between scenes which I love. I think we had a really nice time crafting a sisterly relationship together and trying to find something that felt true to us and that people would understand.

Q: Can you talk a little bit about the wild costumes in the film?
Anne: I wore no trousers. I loved it, actually. I thought that Colleen Atwood’s costume probably created my character. I had certain ideas about who she was and as soon as I put on the dress, it was like “Oh, she’s there.” I also started to think about the relationship between her and Helena and I thought if you have a family member who has a very large personality, has a lot of emotions, you compensate by taking up less space. I thought here’s somebody who is literally turning herself into almost weightlessness and yet it is still so ornamented so I just thought it was very rich and very airy for my airhead character.

Q: What was your initiation to Lewis Carroll’s books and what do you appreciate more now that you’ve looked closer through these movies?
Anne: I first read “Alice in Wonderland” when I was 19 and in college so I think being nineteen and fairly dramatic I focused so much on how well Lewis Carroll described madness, just the idea that you see the world just a little bit off and I remember feeling very connected to that at that time. And, as you feel when you encounter people who champion that way of living, I felt a kinship and at home and was very pleased with it.

Q: You have been in some family-oriented films like “The Princess Diaries” films. Now that you are a young mom, do you think “This is something that my son can watch”?
Anne: You give me a lot of credit as a mom. When I was seventeen years old, I thought “My kids are gonna watch this someday.” I didn’t think about that when I did `The Princess Diaries' and I got questions about being a role model. It never occurred to me that actors should be role models for a multitude of reasons but, that’s not what I’m interested in so I don’t make films for that reason. If they happen to work out that way sure, I’m thrilled.

I’ve now been in a lot of films where you can have a date night in a theater with your family or you can sit down on the couch in sweat pants and become a human amoeba and just chill out together and feel warm and connected and I’m proud of that in my body of work are stories that allow families to experience them together. I can’t say that I’m going to continue to make them because I have a child now. I just will hopefully continue to make them because I respond to them and seek challenges as an actress.

TV Ratings: ABS-CBN's Viewership Surge to 47% in June 2016

ABS-CBN Corporation’s TV and Studio business continues to be unrivaled as recent ratings data from Kantar Media shows the Philippines’ leading media and entertainment company still draws more television viewers than any other media network in the country.

ABS-CBN’s national audience share increased to 47% in June based on the data provided by Kantar Media, making ABS-CBN still the most-watched network on TV while it also pioneered viewing of content online with video-on-demand services on TFC.tv for Kapamilyas living abroad and iWant TV locally. GMA is a distant second with a 32% audience share for the same month.

Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,610 urban and rural homes that represent 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while the other ratings data supplier AGB Nielsen reportedly has only 2,000 homes based solely in urban areas that represent only 57% of the Philippine TV viewing population.

ABS-CBN’s primetime block obtained a 49% average audience share that is 18 percentage points higher than rival GMA’s 31% average audience share during the same time block. The primetime block is the most important part of the day when most Filipinos watch TV and advertisers put a larger chunk of their investment in to reach more consumers effectively.

Still topping the list of most watched primetime programs during the previous month is “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” with an average national TV rating of 42.2%, followed by “The Voice Kids,” with 36.8%, and “Dolce Amore” with 33.7%. The 3-punch combo of the Kapamilya network is joined in the Top 5 most viewed programs in May 2016 by the longest-running drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (33.5%) and “Wansapanataym” (31.1%). Recently concluded show “The Story of Us” finished the month with a 19.8% average rating, good for a top 10 finish of all the primetime offerings of the company.

Aside from that, special coverages from ABS-CBN also performed well in June, according to Kantar Media. The recent Inauguration Day coverage, dubbed “Ang Panunumpa: Pangako ng Pagbabago” earned more viewers than its counterpart with GMA, “Panata sa Pagbabago: A GMA News TV Special,” garnering an 18.8% score compared to the 13.4%. Meanwhile, its recent NBA Finals coverage, “NBA sa ABS-CBN,” recorded a 22.6% rating thanks to basketball fanatics tuning in to the games.

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN continues to lead the way in addressing the change in Filipinos’ viewing habit, wherein more and more Filipinos are consuming content online, by boosting the offerings of iWant TV. Primetime favorites such as “Dolce Amore” and “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano,” as well as afternoon drama shows “Tubig at Langis” and “Doble Kara” are among the shows people can catch up to on the company’s video-on-demand offering.

The high viewership of ABS-CBN content in both television and online indicates that many Filipinos are consuming ABS-CBN content on multiple screens, which is in tune with the company’s goal of making content accessible to every Filipino anytime and anywhere through its new digital platforms, including overseas with the TFC subscribers as well as those on-the-go with ABSCBNmobile.

In other areas, ABS-CBN also proved supreme over GMA. The Kapamilya network established a huge lead in Visayas where they received a 57% rating while the rival network only had a 24%. In Mindanao, ABS-CBN garnered a 57% rating as opposed to GMA’s 26%. For the whole of Luzon, the Kapamilya network still won the battle against their rivals, 41% to 36%.

ABS-CBN Corporation, which began as a broadcasting network, has evolved through the years to become the leading media and entertainment company in the land that is rapidly evolving into an agile digital company.
