Get Know the Real in a Book Called 'What's Ap'

Get Know the Real in a Book Called 'What's Ap'

Known worldwide as a member of the Grammy award-winning group Black Eyed Peas, (born Allan Pineda Lindo) is proud to share his life story through the children’s book What’s Ap.

"I liked the whole idea of writing my life story. I’m into my foundation work and when that idea that it would help to send kids to school, that alone beyond my story, I just loved it. The main advocacy of the book is to help out other children just like how I grew up. People need a chance in getting an education,” he shared during the What’s Ap book launch held last December 15 at National Bookstore in Glorietta, Makati city.

The philanthropic singer, along with Summit Books, is donating all the proceeds from the book to the foundation which will help build classrooms, send children to school, and provide medical help to children with eye problems.

The 41-year-old singer also shared the secret to his close friendship with fellow Black Eyed Peas member “We share the same values. comes from a poor neighborhood in Los Angeles. He comes from a housing project and our goal to be able to help our family na umahon sa buhay. We always had that bond like we always dreamed together like, ‘You know one day man we’re going to have our own tour bus. We’re going to open for our heroes and then we’re going to go to Europe.’ So we’re like always dreaming together. And that’s our bond. It’s our family and succeeding,” he explained.

In the book What’s Ap, Apl hopes to inspire other kids like him who had to overcome challenges like poor eyesight and constant bullying from peers. “Actually my grandmother she was the one that gave me the strength. She would say, ‘Oh don’t pay attention to them. They’re like that because you’re special.’ So I just take that as I’m special (laughs). And she would fight anyone that would tease me or call me nognog, ganun. So I just followed my grandmother’s footsteps and then once I had a career I thanked God that I listened to those few words that my grandma said. It gives me strength. So people can say whatever they want but I’m going to do what I have to do and push through my dreams,” he said.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Fast Becoming the Biggest Grossing Movie in History

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Fast Becoming the Biggest Grossing Movie in History

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" smashed the opening night record in the United States and Canada and was poised to become one of the biggest grossing movies ever, industry experts said Friday.

The latest instalment of the highly anticipated space epic raked in $57 million for its opening night Thursday, easily beating the previous record -- $43.5 million -- held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" in 2011.

Disney gushed that combined with Friday figures, ticket sales "are pointing to a total day of $100M+ for a new industry record... and the first triple-digit-million day ever!"

The "Harry Potter" film holds the all-time record for opening day at $91 million but the new "Star Wars" -- which has had rave reviews and even saw Stormtroopers "invade" the White House on Friday -- is expected to also force it out of that slot.

"This represents a new record for the industry and portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film," said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak.

"The Force Awakens," which has had its legions of fans frothing at the mouth ever since its mooted release, has grossed at least $130 million worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

Analysts predict that the seventh instalment of the iconic space saga, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to produce, could score the biggest opening weekend ever and could even become the biggest film of all time.

"We appear to be headed for $200M+ through Sunday and the possibility of an all-time weekend record," Disney said.

The opening weekend record is currently held by "Jurassic World," which premiered earlier this year to $208.8 million at the box office.

As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record -- "Avatar" ($2.78 billion) and "Titanic" ($2.18 billion).

"The potential for 'The Force Awakens' to ultimately break into the $2 billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility," Dergarabedian said.

- 'Join $2 billion club' –

Jeff Bock, box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations, said: "As far as breaking records go, it’s the strongest candidate we've seen in a long, long time.

"It might join the $2 billion club worldwide, and maybe, just maybe, be the highest grossing film of all-time."

Disney, which bought the rights to the "Star Wars" franchise from its creator George Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, has built up the hype around "The Force Awakens," rolling out a well-orchestrated marketing campaign that has left fans wanting more.

Early reviews of the movie have given it a big thumbs-up and three more instalments are due in the coming years.

"The Force Awakens" picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from "The Return of the Jedi," the finale of the original trilogy.

The trio of heroes who appeared in the first of the blockbusters in 1977 -- smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), leader of the rebel alliance, and her twin brother Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) -- are all back and played by the actors that Star Wars first made famous.

The film is being screened in 4,134 theaters in North America, a record for a December opening.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Character Posters

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Character Posters

Fresh from coming out with a well-received new trailer, Warner Bros. Pictures has now released the "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" character posters showing the trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in hero poses. Check out the one-sheets below.

From director Zack Snyder comes "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," starring Oscar winner Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent in the characters' first big-screen pairing.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.

Directed by Zack Snyder, the film also stars Oscar nominees Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, and Laurence Fishburne as Perry White; Oscar winners Jeremy Irons as Alfred, and Holly Hunter as Senator Finch; and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Snyder directed from a screenplay written by Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, based on characters from DC Comics, including Batman, created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger, and Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The film is produced by Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, with Wesley Coller, Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer serving as executive producers.

Opening across the Philippines in March 26, 2016, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TFC Brings Together OFW Families in One Unforgettable Paskong Pinoy 'Kapamilya Reunion'

TFC Brings Together OFW Families in One Unforgettable Paskong Pinoy 'Kapamilya Reunion'

In the spirit of the holiday season that brings family and friends together in celebrations, ABS-CBN The Filipino Channel tapped the power of media and technology to gather nearly 40 overseas Filipinos (OFs) from 10 countries for their virtual Kapamilya Reunion with their families in the Philippines.

The families in the homeland were gathered last December 6 at the Restaurant 9501 of ABS-CBN Corporation in Quezon City while OFs gathered in TFC offices in Redwood City, California; Toronto in Ontario; Dubai Media City; and partner venues Bar FM in London; Salad Bar Grill and Suite, New South Wales; Kusina Restaurant in Seoul; Outback Restaurant in Singapore; and Dabarkads in Hong Kong to make the virtual reunion happen.

ABS-CBN Global Marketing Services Head Pam Castillo said she is proud that ABS-CBN TFC's service transcends broadcasting.  "We are in the service of the Filipino worldwide and this has many layers.  We accompany OFs in their journey overseas through information and entertainment and the company of our stars.  But most importantly, we try to keep the link to home not only through TFC programs but also through our special events and engagements such as Kapamilya Reunion,Castillo said.

ABS-CBN Regional Marketing Head for Europe, Middle East and Africa Maribel Hernaez, added that what enables the TFC team to truthfully fulfill this mission is the fact that most of them are OFs themselves.  "As an overseas Filipino worker, I empathize with them – how challenging their movement was, how they consistently struggle in a foreign land, and how they remain hopeful for a chance to be with their families, Hernaez said.

One of TFC's answers to OFs' yearning for their families according to ABS-CBN Asia Regional Marketing Head for Asia Pacific Eric Martin Santos is Kapamilya Reunion. Santos said: "Through Kapamilya Reunion, we hope to bring Christmas to those who cannot come home for the season.  So together as a team, we brought these families together for a few hours of entertainment, an array of feasts, exchange gifts and most of all, one unforgettable Christmas."

Launched in September, the concerted TFC teams behind Kapamilya Reunion asked the OFs to share their most unforgettablePaskong `Pinas with their family online, through TFC's facebook pages.   Overseas Filipinos from all over the world heeded TFC's call and sent answers from the most touching moments to childhood memories that continue to bring a smile to their faces. The winning stories were chosen based on their impact and uniqueness.

Rahmil Pamilacan of United Arab Emirates (UAE), shared a memory from way back in 2006, the last time his family was complete.  Because of the need to fend for the family, one family member worked overseas one after the other.  His mother Marie Luz who was also a former OF, understands how it is for Rahmil to be alone in UAE.  In between tears, she thanked TFC for the opportunity to bring him closer, "Hindi ko inaasahan ito.  Na-surprise ako kasi ngayon lang ako naka-experience ng ganito.  Dati susulat ka tapos after two months pa darating.  Ngayon nag-uusap kami via skype – kung anong meron.  Sobrang proud ako sa anak ko dahil laging may sorpresa sa akin.  Kahit malayo siya, may pag-aalala."

Meantime, Mercedes Lamanilao left the Philippines ten years ago to work in Hong Kong and has not seen husband Isagani and their kids since then.  Isagani is happy that he was able to speak with Mercedes throughKapamilya Reunion but for him, the experience is bittersweet.  He said: "Masaya pero medyo malungkot kasi hindi namin siya kasama."

Cornelio dela Cruz of Singapore understands how hard it is for one's family to be incomplete, especially at Christmas.  He said that his brother Ino shared the story on how their last memory of a happy Christmas was when their father was still alive."  Last five years…ang hirap dahil nabawasan kami ng isa.  Actually four lang kami so ang lungkot.  Before, naramdaman namin ang hirap umupa.  Pero magkakasama kami kasi buhay nga ang father ko noon.  Ngayon naman may house kaming sarili, pero magkakahiwalay naman kami."

Truly, for these OFs, the company of their families is what is most important and transcends wealth and material things.  But while some relive memories with family, some hang on to tangible things to help them by.  Nenita Soledad of United Kingdom still remembers the day her grandson gave her a letter which she only opened when she arrived in UK.  To this day, she still carries the letter.  Son Isagani shares that Kapamilya Reunion enabled her to see not only grandsonKael but the entire family as well.  Isagani said: "Lagi kaming nagkikita through skypepero itong araw na ito, espesyal kasi maraming mga Filipino sa ibang bansa na nagce-celebrate na sila-sila lang pero ngayon sama-sama.  Although hindi pa December 25, we can celebrate an early Christmas now at kasama ko ang anak ko at buong pamilya ko."

Marinette Orlanda's (from Canada) sisterMarizen Cajayon agrees that Kapamilya Reunion is different from their regular skype sessions "Masaya kami kasi may chance na magkita kami.  Of course, nagkikita rin kami kahit papaano pero mas masaya ngayon kasi kumpleto kami."

Magdalene Calimlim from the United States has not had this luxury of a complete family since she separated from husband Edgardo Landingin.  But through their daughterKatrina Rosaly Sianco and Kapamilya Reunion, they were able to see each other again.  Edgardo shares that the couple let bygones be bygones for the children and entire family.  He said: "Ang sugat pag nasugat na, mayroon at mayroong peklat.  Pero iba pa rin ang pamilya especially sa mga anak ko.  Sabi nga nila tumatanda, namamatay, nawawala. Pero ang mga anak at apo, pang-habang buhay.  Iba rin kung alam nila ang sitwasyon."

Lecy Ann Alcobenas of Japan also faces the same challenge as she is a single mother.  Leaving the country was extra hard because she had to leave her one year-old daughter just to fend for her two-member family, alone.  Alcobendas wished to her family in the Philippines: "Sana manalo ako.  Puntahan ninyo iyan kasi pangarap ko iyan.  Baka saka-sakaling makasama ko ang anak ko."

While Kapamilya Reunion was a dream come true for Lecy Ann, it was a need fulfilled forJoy Pereña of Taiwan.  Her family is not blessed with a regular internet connection so father Ignacio values the Kapamilya Reunionand affirmed: "Malaking bagay. Nakakatulong kayo.  Kahit malayo man ang mga miyembro ng mga kapamilya, ay nagkakausap man lang, sa pamamagitan ng ABS-CBN TFC." Iyong connection, iba.  Malaking tulong sa amin."

Aside from connecting families from different parts of the world, Kapamilya Reunion also tried to recreate the Christmas celebration, the Filipino way.  In remaining true to the Filipino tradition that is Paskong `Pinoy, each of TFC team rolled out a salo-salo, sort of like a Noche Buena feast.  In U.S. and Canada, choirs Praise and Glorify and thePentecostal Ministry performed poignant Christmas songs, especially carols the OFs missed back home.

The TFC teams composed of TFC's Regional Marketing teams headed by Castillo, Hernaez & Santos and Advertising Sales teams headed by Global Ad Sales Head Jon Gatbonton, also enabled the OFs and their families to exchange gifts courtesy of partners.  The gift-giving does not stop there as the OF families in the Philippines, through TFC's courier partner, will be able to send their gifts to their loved ones overseas for free, and with it, more happy memories to share this Christmas.

Like a true Paskong 'Pinas, select Kapamilyastars joined kababayans who were online during the first part: OFs from U.S., Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan and their families gathered at Restaurant 9501.  Pangako Sa `Yo's Thou Reyes (Takong) andDJ Jai Ho (Coring); Deal or No Deal's MJ LastimosaJoj and Jai of Forevermore; Umagang Kay Ganda's Marlo Mortell; and Jon Lucas of the viral sensation Hash Tags made the reunion extra special.

During the second part of the reunion where TFC gathered families from the United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Taiwan, and South Korea, more Kapamilya stars came to inject some more happy moments:  Pangako Sa `Yo's Sue Ann Ramirez (Ligaya/Joy);Forevemore's Sofia Andres (Kate); Arron Villaflor (Dr. Henry Nieves); Jairus Aquino ofLuv U; Bonnel Balingit and Diana Meneses ofKapamilya Deal or No Deal.

Ramirez who plays Joy/Ligaya in the hit teleserye Pangako Sa `Yo shared that she is proud to have been be part of Kapamilya Reunion.  She said she can relate to what ourkababayans are going through as she herself has relatives overseas.  She believes TFC's "Kapamilya Reunion" helped shorten the distance so to speak and sustain that bond.  "Iba pa rin iyong mayayakap mo iyong mga mahal mo, mga pamilya mo.  Ako mismo nakikita nila sa TFC so nagiging close kami.  TFC ang naging way nila para ma-connect sa families sa Pilipinas,"Ramirez shared.

Pangako Sa `Yo's Doris 'Tart' Carlos and Ang Probinsyano's Vivieka Vivieka shared light moments with the OFs too as the program hosts.

Witness the touching moments of Kapamiya Reunion via TFC Connect on December 25, worldwide.   For more information, visit TFC pages worldwide.

Election Madness Escalates with 'Our Brand is Crisis'

Election Madness Escalates with 'Our Brand is Crisis'

Warner Bros. Pictures’ new satirical comedy “Our Brand is Crisis” starring Sandra Bullock takes a timely look at the high-stakes gamesmanship behind the scenes of a presidential campaign, seen through the eyes and actions of the strategists-for-hire who are pulling the strings.  The film could not have come at a timelier moment for the Philippines which is currently in the maelstrom of election madness.

Bringing audiences into the belly of the beast with a fictional story as relevant as today’s news cycle, “Our Brand is Crisis” explores the often outrageous and unconscionable lengths to which some people will go in their competitive zeal to get the job done and cross the finish line ahead of the other guy.

So much of politics and the election process is absurd, from big business to the media circus, the sound bites and the haircuts,” says director David Gordon Green.  Addressing some of the film’s tonal facets, he adds, “Politics has become entertainment and marketing.  That’s where the movie has some fun and a sense of humor, in exposing that absurdity, which gives the story its energy and momentum even as the characters are facing some difficult issues that we definitely don’t tiptoe around.”

It was Green’s gift for keeping that kind of balance in play that led the producers to enlist him for the project, citing his success not only with irreverent comedies like “Pineapple Express” and the acclaimed HBO comedy/drama “Eastbound and Down,” but for what producer Grant Heslov calls “character driven films about big ideas.”

Heslov, who produced “Our Brand is Crisis” in tandem with his Smokehouse Pictures partner George Clooney, goes on to acknowledge, “This isn’t a partisan thing.  You can stand on either side and see it; the crazy amount of money involved and the B.S. that goes on.  It’s something that has always interested us, the idea of winning at whatever cost.”

As the story opens, the infamous campaign fixer Jane Bodine (Sandra Bullock) is in seclusion, following a tragically unsuccessful run that left her more shattered than she can admit.  She’s not quite ready to return to the fray when a former associate comes knocking in hopes that Jane can help turn things around for a hugely unpopular presidential candidate in Bolivia, named Castillo.  She declines.  But when Jane learns that her bitter rival Pat Candy has been hired by the opposing party, her competitive nature kicks in.  Having lost to Pat more than once before, this could be her chance to even the score.

The depth of the story and the challenges faced by their lead character was what attracted producers Heslov and Clooney.  “With some films the tone is very straightforward.  Oddly enough, we rarely make those films,” Heslov says.  “We usually find ones where the tone is on the precipice and can go several ways.  This film is darkly funny, and also has moments of great seriousness, and there are underlying issues worthy of real thought.”

While fictional in both its characters and story, “Our Brand is Crisis” was inspired by true events depicted in the 2005 documentary of the same name from writer/director Rachel Boynton, which chronicles the real-life presidential campaign of Bolivia’s Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada.  “It was inspiring on every level,” notes Bullock, “but we had to let it go and create our own story.”

The filmmakers were captivated by the idea of paid political consultants plying their expertise to manage elections not only on their home soil but in far-flung locations around the globe.  Bringing in renowned screenwriter Straughan, together they imagined what such people might be like – their lives and back-stories, their motivations and relationships, and the scope of their influence.

“Working on this project only confirmed what I always thought existed in the political world,” says Bullock.   But at the same time, she observes, “The film is not really as much about politics as it is about people and what drives them.  It’s set in the tense, ticking-clock world of a political election and you get caught up in what’s going to happen next but to me it’s more about which of these people are going to do the right thing, and what that means.  You see the comedy and the absurdity, the pain and chaos that is often caused by people who just want to win and you think, if it was you, would you be strong enough to get off the carousel?

Opening across the Philippines on January 13, 2016, “Our Brand is Crisis” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
