TV5 Airs an Exclusive Coverage of ‘International Premiere Tennis League (IPTL)’

Pinoy tennis fans are in for a treat as the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) kicks off on December 6 – 8 2015 at the Mall of Asia Arena, bringing with it the world’s best tennis players. This 3-day tournament will feature top-ranked international tennis legends and rising stars including Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams who are to set to take the local tennis world on a top spin with their exceptional talent and athleticism.

This year’s tournament follows the success of the International Premier Tennis League’s first Manila leg last November 2014 which generated over 30,000 tennis fans in attendance. According to Mahesh Bhupathi, the founder of IPTL and former Grand Slam Doubles Champion, last year’s Philippine leg showed how Filipinos warmly accepted tennis and their high regard for world-class tennis players who were treated here as rock stars which made IPTL decide a return of this prestigious event to Manila.

It’s a gathering of tennis legends and rising stars; this is a once in a lifetime experience for a lot of people. To watch Rafa or Serena in the flesh normally happens when you watch the French Open or the Wimbledon”, says Bhupathi.

Taking a breather from the tennis circuit, the world’s number one woman tennis player, Serena Williams will be here to showcase her winning ways in the 3-day tournament. Williams, who is a 21 Grand Slam Women’s Singles Title holder, will be playing for the Philippine Mavericks.

This year’s IPTL promises to be even better with the presence of King of Clay – Rafael Nadal of Spain. With Nadal in the line-up, this year’s Manila leg expects to draw more tennis fans who would like to see in action one of the greatest players of all time.

Other tennis stars including Ana Ivanovic, Gael Monfils, Daniela Hantuchova, Tomas Berdych and Nick Kyrgios will be in the country for the prestigious event to represent the five teams that will be competing in the league – Indian Aces, Singapore Slammers, UAE Royals, Philippine Mavericks and the latest addition to the league, Japan Warriors. The Philippines is IPTL’s second stop following its kick off games in Japan and with the rest of the tournament taking place in India, Dubai and in Singapore, where the league finals will be held.

TV5, the Philippines’ top sports channel and home of the best sporting events is IPTL’s exclusive broadcast partner. Its matches will be aired live via TV5 and online via Sports5.ph on the following schedule:

Watch 'Banana Sundae' Spoofs 'On The Wings of Love'

“Banana Sundae” can’t stop producing one funny act after another and letting viewers see other Kapamilya artists’ funny sides as they roll along this Sunday (December 6).

This week’s serving includes a special guesting of Denise Laurel for the episode as well as comedians Chocoleit and K Brosas for the gang’s Kantaranta segment; a presidentiable impersonation; a parody of the wildly popular “On The Wings Of Love” called Chicken Wings of Love where Jessy Mendiola plays Leah and 29th Star Awards' Best Comedy Actor Jayson Gainza tries his best hand at being Clark.

The “Banana Sundae” cast has been making people laugh during their late night forays, most notably with mainstays Angelica Panganiban’s and Jason Gainza’s segments Krissy TV and Ihaw na. With a new airdate, and with quirky segments, Sunday viewers would definitely have a good laugh while still having their regular serving of well-loved portions like Kantaranta, Baby Luv, and Make Me Rap.

The other mainstays of the show include John Prats, Ryan Bang, Sunshine Garcia, Aiko Climaco, JC De Vera, Pooh, Jobert Austria, and Badji Mortiz.

Helming the show is director Bobot Mortiz with Linggit Tan-Marasigan serving as the executive in charge of production with Rocky Ubana as executive producer, Willy Cuevas as creative manager and Roderick Victoria as head writer.

“Banana Sundae” airs on Sundays right after “ASAP20.” Other weekend comedy shows of the Kapamilya network include “Goin’ Bulilits,” and “Home Sweetie Home.”

'In the Heart of the Sea' Stars the Next SpiderMan Tom Holland

'In the Heart of the Sea' Stars the Next SpiderMan Tom Holland

Before debuting on next year’s “Captain America: Civil War” as Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider-Man, young actor Tom Holland makes a splash in Warner Bros.’ new action-adventure “In the Heart of the Sea.”

Oscar winner Ron Howard directs “In the Heart of the Sea,” based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s best-selling book about the dramatic true journey of the Essex.  In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance.  The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick.

Holland plays the 14-year-old cabin boy Thomas Nickerson setting off on his first whaling expedition, on the Essex.  Veteran actor Brendan Gleeson portrays the man thirty years later who still bears the scars of his ordeal, although most of them are invisible.

Howard explains, “Our two Nickersons gave us a chance to explore individual aspects of the story that are both interesting and emotional.  There’s the danger and the excitement of the adventure seen through the eyes of a boy, and the trauma of the tragedy as remembered by the man.”

Holland describes the younger Nickerson as “one of the hardest kids I’ve ever come across.  He’s an orphan, he has no one, and he sets out on this voyage with a bunch of hardened men who have been doing this for years, and he genuinely has no idea what he’s doing.  So he heads into it wide-eyed and ready to go, but he doesn’t really know what he’s in for.”

Thirty years later, we see Nickerson—now the last remaining survivor of the Essex—as he is being pressed to recount the events that continue to haunt him.  Brendan Gleeson remarks, “He was only a child when he witnessed this awful thing and has never spoken about the horror of what he went through.  It’s something he’s suppressed for years upon years, and it’s essentially killing him.  When he is able to bring himself to a place where he can finally confront it, it’s quite cathartic.”

“In the Heart of the Sea” was filmed almost entirely in sequence for several reasons, not the least of which was the gradual change in the characters’ appearances as they waste away from a lack of food and water, as well as shelter from the unforgiving elements.

The appearance of the men who survive the sinking of the Essex changes drastically over time, so the actors, in turn, had to lose a substantial amount of weight over the course of production.  Lead actor Chris Hemsworth details, “The men were lost at sea for months, so by the time any of them were found, they were basically just skin and bones.  We were eating minimal amounts of food, but we kept reminding ourselves that it was nothing compared to what they suffered.  We all banded together to keep morale up and distract us from how hungry we were.”

Holland suggests, “There’s no stronger glue than getting a bunch of guys to lose weight together.  But it helped forge a bond between us on the set, which was really important.”

Tom Holland made an auspicious feature film debut in the critically acclaimed true-life drama “The Impossible,” with Naomi Watts.  His performance as a young boy who survived the devastating 2004 tsunami brought him a number of honors, including London Film Critics Circle, NationalBoard of Review and Empire Awards.

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, December 3, in theaters and IMAX®, “In the Heart of the Sea” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Why Atty. Francis Tolentino Could Be an Effective Senator

Why Atty. Francis Tolentino Could Be an Effective Senator

Atty. Francis N. Tolentino recently announced he is running as an independent Senatorial candidate in the 2016 National Elections. Despite getting offers from Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to join their team, he remains firm in his decision not to join any ticket (for now) that could prevent him from pursuing his plan to reform the Philippine government.

Not many of us knows, that aside from his previous role as a Chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) that is tasked to supervise and coordinate metrowide services of Metro Manila without prejudice to the autonomy of the affected 17 local government units, he was also an appointed and later on elected as Mayor of Tagaytay City for three consecutive terms (1995-2004). He was also a former President of League of Cities of the Philippines (2001-2004), and EVP of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (2001-2004).

But aside from those, what keeps Atty. Tolentino as one of the most suited candidates to own the legislative post in the government?

V. PLATFORMS

I stand for greater empowerment of local government units and establishment of regional clusters for increased economic benefits at the grassroots.

Christian Bautista Conquers UK Music Scene with the Song 'Who Is She To Me'

Christian Bautista Conquers UK Music Scene with the Song 'Who Is She To Me'

After Southeast Asia, Christian Bautista, Asia's Romantic Balladeer, is set to penetrate the United Kingdom music scene with the release of his newest song "Who Is She To Me," which is recently at the Top 44 of UK iTunes vocal music charts.

"Who Is She To Me" is Christian's first single released digitally in the UK. It is expected to air over UK radio such as BBC radio 1 and BBC radio 2.

Check out "Who Is She To Me" music video which was shot in London under the direction of international director Leon Mitchell:

Asked what he feels about his latest achievement, Christian, during last Thursday's blogcon at Universal Records' office, said:  "Hindi ko inasahan na makakapasok sya. It floats - sometimes it's in, sometimes it's not. That time when we saw it I was very happy na nakapasok siya," Christian said adding that this chart success means there is a chance for singers, regardless of nationality, to penetrate international music scene.

"There's a chance for anyone with a dream, with the right people, the right connection, the right song," he said.

Asked if he is planning to go to UK to further promote his single, he said: "The plans will start once the song hits top 10. That's the goal I hope it reaches there I really do."

“Who is She To Me” definitely paved way for Christian to work with renowned international musicians and producers including Christian de Walden who also produced hits for legendary artists like Engelbert Humperdinck and Anne Murray together with composer Michael Shepstone of the band The Rockes and Clive Lukover of BBC1.

Completing the creative team behind Christian’s ‘Who Is She To Me’ includes musical arranger Randy Kerber, who previously earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score for the motion picture The Color Purple and nominated for a Grammy for his arrangement of Over the Rainbow for Barbra Streisand; and sound engineer Cristian Robles, who worked with award-winning artists such as Michael Bublé, Josh Groban, BabyFace, Sting, among others.

Known as Asia’s premier romantic balladeer, Christian Bautista continues to conquer new milestones in his outstanding career as a singer. His phenomenal hits like The Way You Look at Me, Colour Everywhere, which are included in his first album , and his new renditions of Jose Mari Chan classics like Beautiful Girl and Tell Me Your Name under the romance revisited album have already achieved multiplatinum status. Christian has earned the title as a multi-media pop star in Indonesia.  His music also became hits in other Asian countries and climbed the radio charts in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. Recently, he was cited by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) as “Male Pop Artist of the Year” and “Music Video of the Year” awardee.

To everybody’s surprise, Anita (Roxanne Guinoo), who has been missing, has been found to be in a coma. Jose (Louise Abuel) and his siblings Boy (Micko Laurente), Criscencio (Jon Michael), Maribel (Karla Cruz), and Michael (Raikko Mateo) have no idea that their mother is alive and have reunited with their father, Kamlon (Jhong Hilario), as they prepare for their survival in the coming typhoon.

Meanwhile, Dado (John Estrada) and Sarge (Nicco Manolo) continue their search for the kids’ father who has been involved with Tisoy’s (Monching Gutierrez) schemes. Here, Dado realizes how deeply he cares for Jose and his siblings which leads Jane (Beauty Gonzales) to also realize that she is still in love with Dado, who she now sees in a different light.

As the show nears its end, several questions are still left to be answered. Will Boy and Jose ever get along? What will Dado do with the kids if and when he rescues them? Will Kamlon man up and testify against Tisoy? Will Jose ever have the family that he dreamed of?

The family of “Walang Iwanan” also have something to be proud of as child star Micko Laurente was recently hailed as the Best Actor in the Asian Panorama section of the 19th International Children’s Film Festival in India. Micko who plays Boy in “Walang Iwanan,” was the lead star of Zig Dulay’s “Bambanti,” Sinag Maynila’s film entry to two international film festivals this year.

All of that and more in the final episode of “Walang Iwanan” as it airs on ABS-CBN every afternoon after “All Of Me.”

Watch: The 'Son of Krypton' Meets The 'Bat of Gotham' in 'Batman v Superman' Trailer

The "Son of Krypton" meets the "Bat of Gotham" in the new trailer of the upcoming film "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Watch below:

The two-minute video shows Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) and Clark Kent/Superman (Henry Cavill) meeting and eventually clashing against each other.

"What's your position on the bat vigilante in Gotham?" Kent asks Wayne. "Civil liberties are being trampled under your city, people living in fear. He thinks he's above the law."

"The Daily Planet criticizing those who think they’re above the law is a little hypocritical wouldn’t you say?" fires back Wayne. "Every time your hero saves a cat out of a tree, you write a puff-piece editorial about an alien that could burn the whole place down.”

The little argument develops into a major clash between the two superheroes towards the end of trailer.

While Batman and Superman are busy fighting, the villain Doomsday makes a debut to spoil the "gladiator match."

Villain Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) and superhero Diana Prince/Wonderwoman (Gal Gadot) also appear in the new trailer that hints on their roles in the movie.

"Dawn of Justice," directed by Zack Snyder, will hit the cinemas on March 25, 2016.

GSK Spreads COPD Awareness - The Disease That Killed Comedy King Dolphy

GSK Spreads COPD Awareness - The Disease That Killed Comedy King Dolphy

For 60 years, we Filipinos knew comedy by one name - Dolphy.

He was the epitome of a total entertainer whose talent in acting, singing and dancing was honed through years of experience and hard work.  His talent was equaled only by his work ethic as he lived by credo “the show must go on,” even after he got sick and was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD.

In the last few years of his life, while Dolphy continued to make people smile, his family was desperately trying hard to keep theirs, knowing that their patriarch was risking his health with every performance.

Dad lived to perform, even if he was already wheelchair-bound and could barely stand, he would revert back into his old self whenever the cameras started rolling,” shared son Eric Quizon.

According to his son, actor-director Eric Quizon, his father was a heavy smoker who started smoking in his teen years. “He was 45 when he went cold turkey after being diagnosed with emphysema and by that time, his lungs were so black.

The damage to his lungs continued to progress with age and Dolphy was diagnosed with COPD at the age of 79, at that time only his partner Zsazsa Padilla knew of his condition.

Eric recalled his father initially tried to hide his illness, but he grew suspicious when Dolphy asked him to buy a portable oxygen concentrator, which he found out was for patients with COPD.

When he turned 80, he began carrying that oxygen concentrator everywhere he went. It was at the same time of the launch of his book and when we went on a US tour,” he recalled.

The once vibrant Comedy King had become lethargic. Aside from frequent coughs and shortness of breath, Eric said his dad would complain of tiredness after taking a few steps.

From his yearly medical checkups, Dolphy’s hospital visits became more and more frequent until his doctors diagnosed him with COPD. That was the time Dolphy decided to talk to his 18 children about his condition. Eric said it was one of the most difficult times for their family, knowing there was no cure for the disease.

Our dad was a fighter. He was our general, our commander-in-chief, so watching him get weaker and trying hard just to catch his breath was very difficult for us,” Epy, Eric’s younger brother recalled emotionally.

The saddest part of is seeing how your loved one deteriorates and there is nothing you can do.”  Epy said.

In mid-2012, Dolphy was hospitalized again and after battling 13 bouts of pneumonia, Dolphy succumbed to the disease on July 10, 2012 at age 83.

Dolphy’s journey as a COPD patient has become the most familiar patient story for Filipinos as his constant hospitalizations and deteriorating health were always part of the news.

COPD: A FAMILIAL PROBLEM

COPD is a progressive lung ailment that makes breathing difficult and invariably leads to death.

It is the seventh killer(1) disease in the Philippines, which is not surprising in a country where there are 17.3 million adult smokers. Unfortunately, only 2% of the 4.2 million Filipinos are diagnosed.
Cigarette smoking causes 80% to 90% of COPD cases. Aside from smoking, pollution - both indoor and outdoor - can also cause COPD, according to studies by the World Health Organization.

Patients who are suffering from COPD experience breathlessness, abnormal sputum characterized by a mix of saliva and mucus, and chronic cough.

As COPD is a progressive disease it becomes a familial problem, much like the case of the Quizon family. Once the father is affected, the rest of the family assumes the responsibility of taking care of the patient and they play an important role in a patient’s treatment journey.

People are often diagnosed with COPD in their 50s and 60s. However, these diagnoses are relatively late as COPD can begin in your 40s.

Do not make the mistake of a lot of patients who usually see their doctors when they are already in the later stages of COPD.  It is easy to confuse COPD with other conditions such as smoker’s cough and shortness of breath due to ageing but if your father is a smoker and he begins to experience coughing with phlegm and an unusual breathing pattern, consult a doctor. He may be asked to get a spirometry exam to diagnose COPD,” says Dr. Gio Barangan, GSK’s Medical Director.

Spirometry is a simple breathing test that gauges how much and how quickly air moves out of the lungs. It measures the lung function in patients and determines the progression of the disease.

Dr. Barangan says if COPD is detected early, patients will have fewer limitations on their activity.

#MakeTimeForDad

As part of the commemoration of World COPD DAY, GlaxoSmithKline and the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP), are spearheading a new campaign called #MakeTimeForDad.

The campaign encourages family members to upload 30-second videos on Facebook and Instagram, stating a list of things they want to do or wish they could have done with their loved fathers. This would serve as a reminder for them to act now if they feel that their loved ones are at risk for COPD, and value each moment they spend with them.

Joining the campaign again are the Quizon brothers Eric and Epy who are honoring their father by fighting the disease that claimed Dolphy’s life.

Our dad died because of COPD and we just found out it is actually one of the leading causes of death in the country,” says Epy.

We want to educate people, and make them aware of the disease. We hope this will give them a clearer picture of how the disease affects not only the patient but the entire family,” he said.

MakeTimeForDad encourages people to be more sensitive to the condition of their fathers especially those who smoke and are more prone to develop COPD”, says Dr. Barangan.
