Infamous "San Andreas" Fault Triggers Worst Earthquake in History

Infamous "San Andreas" Fault Triggers Worst Earthquake in History

New Line Cinema's action-thriller "San Andreas" imagines the largest magnitude earthquake in recorded history. A seismic swarm along a previously undetected fault near Nevada's Hoover Dam crosses the border to trigger California's notorious San Andreas Fault, which erupts in a massive jolt that rocks Los Angeles to its core. But it doesn't stop there. The shockwave travels up the fault line, setting off a ripple effect of chaos and destruction all the way to San Francisco.

It was the fusion of wide-scale calamity and intensely personal connections that drew Dwayne Johnson and director Brad Peyton to the project, while it was still in the latter stages of development with producer Beau Flynn. The three had previously collaborated on the worldwide hit "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," and welcomed the chance to work together again on such a vastly different story where everything – the action, the scale, and the emotional beats – is amplified.

Says Peyton, "This is different from anything I've done before. It was more demanding in its larger-than-life elements but also in striking that tonal honesty. I wanted the characters to ring true so audiences could see it through their point of view as opposed to standing back and witnessing it from a safe distance. Because, as impactful as the action is, at the heart of every story are people you care about."

The idea for "San Andreas" originated with Flynn, a longtime fan of classic disaster films who was eager to update the genre with today's 3D capabilities and cutting-edge technology to create photorealistic images. Beyond that, he concedes, "The reason this movie resonates so much with me is that within three weeks of my moving to Los Angeles, the Northridge earthquake hit. I had never even felt a tremor before, and to experience a major earthquake was terrifying, powerful. It makes you feel very small and humble. I was always fascinated by the San Andreas Fault, specifically, even though I grew up in Miami, 3000 miles away. It's just something I think people are aware of, consciously or not. It's in the zeitgeist."

To keep audiences on the edge of their seats, the filmmakers raised the cinematic stakes on "San Andreas." Applying creative license to a real-world threat, the story's far-reaching scenarios aim for a heightened sense of action and drama. Nevertheless, while not everything depicted on screen is fact-based, the film still acknowledges the reality behind it.

In March 2015 the U.S. Geological Survey estimated the odds of California experiencing a magnitude 8 or greater seismic event in the next 30 years has increased, as has the possibility of multi-fault ruptures, like links in a chain. Attention has long been focused on the infamous San Andreas but there are others steadily building pressure, including the Puente Hills Fault, running from Orange County to downtown L.A., and the underwater Cascadia Subduction Zone, from Northern California to Vancouver Island, with its potential to set off coast-engulfing tsunamis. Quakes have recently been reported in Nevada, Virginia, Oklahoma, Missouri and previously unidentified hot-spots across the country, and remain a global fact of life – with a USGS estimate of approximately 500,000 detectable quakes around the world each year, 100,000 of which can be felt and as many as 100 that will cause damage.

"I took all my own fears and translated them into the script," says screenwriter Carlton Cuse, "knowing Brad would execute every sequence at a very high level, and he exceeded my expectations."

Within the broad canvas of a catastrophic quake, "San Andreas" finds its heart in the deepest instincts such an unpredictable and uncontrollable force of nature provokes: our need to reach out to others and to confirm what's most important to us. "Disasters have a way of bringing out the best in people," Peyton suggests. "Individuals gain focus and find strength. Ordinary people become heroes, while heroes push themselves to the limit."

Concludes Flynn, "I think it's fair to say no one knows exactly what they would do when faced with a fight-or-flight scenario, and that's something we explore in the movie."

Opening across the Philippines in both 3D and 2D format on May 28, 2015, "San Andreas" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Nicholas Hoult Opens Up About His Glorious Death-Wish

Nicholas Hoult Opens Up About His Glorious Death-Wish

Acclaimed young actor Nicholas Hoult stars in director George Miller's epic action-adventure "Mad Max: Fury Road" as the War Boy Nux.

Of his character, Hoult explains, "Nux is a War Boy who is essentially one of the characters who works for the Warlord Immortan Joe. They have been brought up since they were young, working as War Pups and working with vehicles and stuff as mechanics."

The Warlord has indoctrinated the War Boys in his self-created myth that he is an immortal returned to deliver them to the warrior paradise of Valhalla, so they fling themselves into road combat with religious fervor.

Nux has achieved the ultimate for a War Boy in his short, failing life - the vaunted position of driver, with his own personalized hot rod and a V-8 engine block scarified on his chest. "Everyone in this story is a commodity, and yet, in Nux, we see the rambunctiousness of youth," says George Miller. "Even though he's leading a fairly miserable existence, and knows he hasn't got long, he's actually capable of great joy, and Nick has that energy inherently. He's a wonderful actor, extremely disciplined, strong and also tremendous fun. Nick just exudes that youthful exuberance that really tells you who this character is."

Long before production began, Miller set up a secure website loaded with videos of costume fittings, stunt tests, and reference materials for the actors to learn the backstories of the characters, which was a goldmine for Hoult. "It gave some insight into how Nux could always be trying his best to be optimistic," the actor notes. "He doesn't know much about the world; all he knows is that he's only got a half-life. He's got these tumors on his neck called Larry and Barry, who are kind of his pals, but are also killing him. His relative innocence and enthusiasm are what set Nux onto the path he takes in this film."

All the War Boys sport bald heads, tattoos, scarification, and full body-paint in Immortan's signature white, so Hoult shaved his head and sat in the make-up trailer for two hours each day before cameras rolled. "When your appearance changes so much, it helps you tap into different parts of your personality," he says. Though he enjoyed the process, he admits he envied how Theron worked it. "Charlize walks in, greases her forehead and out she goes. I was like, 'Hang on a minute…'"

From director George Miller, originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary "Mad Max" franchise, comes "Mad Max: Fury Road," a return to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by Imperator Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

Opening across the Philippines in 2D and 3D theaters on Thursday, May 14, "Mad Max: Fury Road" is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Ken Anderson and Chanel Morales Team-up in "WATTPAD PRESENTS Sky, My Robot Prince"

Artista Academy alumna Chanel Morales and Ken Anderson team up for the first time as they give life to the well-loved characters of Lowlah and Sky in WATTPAD PRESENTS “Sky, ‘My Robot Prince’”.

Based on the Wattpad novel written by ZAI RED, WATTPAD PRESENTS “Sky,‘My Robot Prince’” tells the tale of true love in this modern age of technology. This TV adaptation features Chanel Morales and Ken Anderson as childhood friends who both try to hide their feelings from each other.  Also, for the first time, Kiray Celis ventures into her first-ever TV5 project as she portrays the girl who will try to keep the characters of Chanel Morales and Ken Anderson apart.

Sky (Ken Anderson), a member of famous boy band named “The Flower Prince 3”, is best known for his talent in playing the guitar. Though girls continue to chase him, he remains uninterested since he already has his eyes on his best friend Lowlah (Chanel Morales). Lowlah is s a struggling robotics engineering student who wishes to excel in her field like her parents. Unlike Sky who has time for his passion in music, Lowlah chooses to concentrate on her inventions. Sneaking his way into Lowlah’s life, Sky inadvertently destroys her most-prized and latest invention: an android robot which perfectly resembles Sky. Afraid of Lowlah’s expected wrath, Sky decides to pretend to be the android robot in Lowlah’s room while he waits for his friend to fix the actual android robot that he destroyed. Awkward and difficult as it may seem, Sky takes this chance to spend more time with Lowlah. In the middle of this, Lowlah discovers herself falling in love with what she thinks is her robot invention. Making this love story more complicated is the participation of Kiray Celis who plays the role of the obsessed fan of Sky who is willing to do anything and anything to have him for herself. Will Sky still be able to correct all the complications he himself created before he finally drives Lowlah away?

Don’t miss this “kilig” story brought to life by Channel Morales and Ken Anderson on WATTPAD PRESENTS “Sky ‘My Robot Prince’”, airing May 11 - 15, Monday to Friday at 9pm on TV5.

ABS-CBN TVplus Brings Free Public PPV Viewing Experience of Pacquiao - Mayweather Fight

ABS-CBN TVplus Brings Free Public PPV Viewing Experience of Pacquiao - Mayweather Fight

Inmates were filled with excitement as they gathered at the gym of Quezon City Jail to watch the live, uninterrupted broadcast of a Manny Pacquiao bout live for the first time last May 3.

This optimal real-time viewing experience was brought by ABS-CBN TVplus for free to areas with limited access to pay-per-view service, including Camp Crame, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Philippine General Hospital, and San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

For inmates at the Quezon City Jail, having been granted the opportunity to watch the real-time action of the “fight of the century” also meant uniting in support of the Pambansang Kamao in the biggest fight of his career.

We are thankful to TVplus because this is a first for the inmates. We were very excited to watch the fight,” said Jayrex Bustinera, the institution’s chief of public relations.

Meanwhile, members of the Philippine National Police in Camp Crame initially raised funds to avail of the pay-per-view (PPV) coverage of the fight, but found it difficult to collect the required amount for payment. When they were granted free PPV coverage by ABS-CBN TVplus, they instead utilized the raised funds to provide free meals to the PNP members and their families during the fight.

Their digital TV experience did not end there, as ABS-CBN TVplus donated the Mahiwagang Black Boxes used during the screenings to PNP offices for their future use.

Cheers and screams filled the public screening venues as spectators saw the fight in crystal clear picture, which, historically, is only accessible to cable or pay TV subscribers.

Pacquiao may have lost the “fight of the century” but for those who attended ABS-CBN TVplus’ screenings, Pacman remains an idol and inspiration for his determination and persistence to overcome life’s struggles and making the Philippines proud.

Marian Rivera Baby Bump Photo; American Idol Officially Bids Goodbye

Dingdong Dantes posted on his Instagram account @dongdantes a photo of his pregnant wife Marian Rivera showing her baby bump on Sunday in time for Mother's Day celebration.

From today, and all succeeding years hereafter, you will be recognized for this new remarkable designation. I'm proud of you. Happy Mother's Day!"

Even days before its 14th Season finale on Thursday, Fox already announced that the reality singing show American Idol will return on its 15th season early January 2016.

But the good news comes along with a sad, sad reports that the next season will also be the last for the show.

The show which used to be a consistent top-rater from a series high of 30.8 million viewers per episode in 2006 dropped down to a viewership of around 6.5 million viewers on its current season which most likely the reason why its producer decided that its high time to officially close the show.

Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban, and Harry Connick Jr., return as judges with Ryan Seacrest as the show's host.

Star Cinema and Regal Entertainment have released the movie poster and trailer for its upcoming romantic drama movie "You're Still The One".

Showing in cinemas nationwide on May 27, the movie stars Maja Salvador, Dennis Trillo, and Richard Yap under the direction of Chris Martinez.

Luis Manzano and Angel Locsin announced on Sunday during the former's birthday celebration on ASAP 20 that they are already planning to settle down very soon.

"Napag-uusapan nga natin, siyempre gusto ko surprise sa kanya. Pero it’s going to be happening very, very soon," Luis said.

Angel, on the other hand, told Luis, "Sana mahalin mo pa rin ako kahit anong mangyari," which he immediately replied with "Forever."

Post-apocalyptic Videogames Atmosphere Features in Hard-hitting Action Movie “Mad Max: Fury Road”

Post-apocalyptic Videogames Atmosphere Features in Hard-hitting Action Movie “Mad Max: Fury Road”

British actor Tom Hardy takes on the title role of Max Rockatansky in Warner Bros. Pictures' hard-hitting action-thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road” from legendary director George Miller.

George essentially invented the post-apocalyptic atmosphere we now see in so many videogames and movies,” says Hardy. “That’s his canvas, and he’s continuing to paint on it with all of the assets he has at his fingertips. To be in this film is to sit with George in his toy box, and his imagination is so fantastic that you’re not really in a movie; you’re in George’s head.”

Max Rockatansky was first introduced in Miller’s original 1979 film “Mad Max,” and the character’s global resonance took even his creator by surprise. “I realized I’d unconsciously tapped into that classic mythological archetype,” he says. “In Japan, they called Max a lone Ronin Samurai. In France, they saw the film as a ‘Western on wheels’ and Max as the lone gunslinger. In Scandinavia, some said Max reminded them of a solitary Viking warrior, wandering the harsh landscape.”

Casting Tom Hardy in the role, Miller knew he’d found an actor who could bring a palpable truth to the mythic figure, noting, “It’s easy to be cautious as an actor, but there are some who are emotional warriors, and that’s Tom. He’s fearless. I was waiting for someone like Tom to come along and knew he would find the soul of Max within himself.”

Miller sensed in Hardy a quicksilver energy that recalled his first encounter with Mel Gibson when he initially cast him as Mad Max three decades ago. “It’s a charisma born out of paradox that makes him so compelling to watch,” the director posits. “Tom can be accessible, yet mysterious; tough, yet vulnerable. There’s tremendous warmth, but also an element of danger.”

Hardy was just six weeks old when the first film was released, but grew up very much aware of the Road Warrior legend. Once he wrapped his mind around the director’s vision, he understood that he wasn’t being asked to revisit the character but to reinvent it. “Mel’s Max is iconic,” Hardy relates. “But when George asked me to play this character, I entered into a collaboration with him to transmute Max for the events in this film. It’s brilliant material and a great honor to play this role.”

Still, Hardy reached out to Gibson to seek his blessing. “We had lunch, and it was good. He handed over the torch.

Embodied by Hardy, Max Rockatansky emerges as a veteran of some desert war with a skill set that allows him to survive alone, having learned that attachment only leads to sorrow in a hostile world. “Max is somebody who just wants to go home, but there is no home,” Hardy says. “There’s nothing but silence, pain and destruction. He lives in a place where there’s no humanity, yet he still yearns for it. But relationships cost in this world.

In the film, we find Max contemplating the dead, featureless void of the Plains of Silence, where his battered Interceptor, the last remnant of his old life, has taken him. “He’s seen a tremendous amount of trauma and horror, and everything he cares about is lost,” Hardy notes. “But even though his life, in many ways, is not worth living, there’s an argument to defy death. He’s not ready to die until he metes out a certain amount of justice for everything that has been taken from him.”

Opening across the Philippines in 2D and 3D theaters on Thursday, May 14, “Mad Max: Fury Road” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TV5 Turns Digital, Sets to Roll Out Digital TV Service Nationwide

TV5 Turns Digital, Sets to Roll Out Digital TV Service Nationwide

Emmanuel C. Lorenzana, TV5 President, said the company is spending P700 million over the next five years, with P300 million allotted for this year alone. The remaining P400 million would be spent through 2020.

"We already have, in fact we are transmitting digital in Channel 41 already. It’s just a matter of making the footprint bigger. Right now, it’s only National Capital Region," Lorenzana said.

"Not only bigger, but I want the transmission to be good in indoors, that's my priority," he said.

TV5 earlier sought National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) approval for the conversion to digital of its UFH TV broadcast station in the following areas: San Jose, Occidental Mindoro; Kalibo, Aklan; Roxas City, Capiz; Puerto Princesa, Palawan; Aparri, Cagayan; Vigan, Ilocos Norte; Iligan, Isabela; Olongapo City, Zambales; Tacloban City and Borongan in Eastern Samar; and Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.

The Philippines is shifting to digital TV after adopting Japan’s ISDB-T as the standard for the migration. The NTC and the Information and Communications Technology Office are finalizing the migration plan.

The NTC aims to shut off analog TV service in the country by 2020. The agency is no longer entertaining applications for analog TV.

Me and You - Nadine Lustre Official Music Video and Lyrics

Me and You - Nadine Lustre Official Music Video and Lyrics

Burning with so much class and edginess, Nadine Lustre takes it to the next level as seen in the music video for her latest song - the club-tinged, electro-pop flavored track "Me and You" from her self-titled album released under Viva Records.

Watch below:

Well I haven’t seen you in a while
But I'm still held captive by your smile
Don't you think we deserve another try?
Cause we never really let it go
And your arms still feel like coming home
And maybe we be better off this time?
Lately, my life is like
Keep playing the same day and it never seems to end
But when I look into your eyes you make me feel alive again

Can we disappear?
Can we leave this place?
Can we fly away?
Far away, from here where it’s I don’t know
What we need is me and you
All we need is me and you

Do you still remember the first day?
When you turned your head and look my way?
When you crash landed into my heart,
And I always knew that we would be
Finding a ay back eventually and this time,
I hope we never part

Lately, my life is like
Keep playing the same day and it never seems to end
But when I look into your eyes,
You make me feel alive again

Can we disappear?
Can we leave this place?
Can we fly away? far away,
From here where it’s
I don’t know what we need is me and you
All we need is me and you

All we need is me and you
All we need is me and you
Can we dance again? (yeah)
Far away from here
All we need is me and you.
All we need is me and you
All we need is me and you

Can we disappear?
Can we leave this place?
Can we fly away? far away,
From here where it’s I don’t know
What we need is me and you
All we need is me and you

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Returns With a Brand-New Season This Sunday on TV5

The longest running franchise game show in the Philippines makes a grand comeback this Sunday, May 10, as TV5 premieres Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Season 14. Hosted by no other than the “Bossing of game shows” Mr. Vic Sotto, WWTBAM kicks off its new season this weekend with the return of the famous lifeline “Phone-a-Friend” along with a new and improved set.

In line with TV5’s continuous aim to make Filipino viewers happy, it is now giving greater chances for the contestants to take home the much-coveted Two Million Peso jackpot prize by reducing the number of questions which will be asked in this new season - from the usual 15 questions, it has now been lowered to 12.

For the initial episode of the Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? Season 14, Vic Sotto will be sharing the stage with the mother-daughter tandem of ace comedienne Ruby Rodriguez and showbiz newbie Toni Aquino. Kapatid viewers are in for a night of fun as Ruby works with Toni in trying their luck by answering the 12 hot seat questions. Will they be able to reach the jackpot round and win the P2 million grand prize?

Since it started airing on TV5 in 2009, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? has been able to rekindle the Pinoy viewers’ game show craze. To note, the show has consistently maintained its status as a top-rating show of the Kapatid Network. Viewers have seen how ordinary Filipinos tried their luck in the game show and saw the biggest change in their live. Several celebrities also gamely played for their chosen charities – Sharon Cuneta, Dina Bonnevie, Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Coney Reyes, Ruffa Gutierrez and Lucy Torres-Gomez, to name a few.

Be part of this latest season of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire”, airing every Sunday, starting May 10 at 9pm, exclusively on TV5.
