Hugh Jackman Plays Villain Like No Other in Futuristic Action Thriller “Chappie”

Hugh Jackman Plays Villain Like No Other in Futuristic Action Thriller “Chappie”

Sony Pictures Releasing International Press Release

Taking on the role of the villain, Vincent Moore, in Columbia Pictures' new futuristic action thriller “Chappie” is Academy Award-winner Hugh Jackman.

In the near future, crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. But now, the people are fighting back. When one police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming, he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful, destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.

As an engineer who is very opposed to the idea of artificial intelligence, Vincent takes the robot Chappie’s advancement personally, as producer Simon Kinberg explains. “Vincent is a twisted, militaristic, aggressive, insecure, brilliant scientist who believes the world needs this massive weapon he’s created,” Kinberg says. “He’s sacrificed everything for this program. He was a soldier, and to get what he wants, he takes some insane, extreme tactics. He’d light the city on fire to get what he wants.

I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun playing a character as Vincent Moore,” says Jackman. “He’s an Australian, so it was nice to use my own accent. The key to understanding Vincent is he will not lose. Even when the odds are against him, even when all the signs are pointing in another direction, that’s when he fights harder. He feels what he is doing is so important, that he can’t accept anybody else’s direction or even the fact that anyone else can win.

Because he rarely plays a villainous role, Jackman relished the opportunity to play a realistic villain with a justifiable point of view. “The best villains don’t think they’re villains,” he says. “He brings a genuine argument to the table, and he’s convinced that what he’s doing is right and necessary. What makes him a villain is his inability to lose. That trumps everything and he becomes very destructive, very angry and vengeful.”

Kinberg, also a producer of the recent “X-Men” films, has worked with Jackman on four films. “He has that movie star magnetism,” explains the producer. “He’s had it since that first X-Men movie, I’ve seen it on stage. In this movie, he obviously still has that, but it’s completely different, because he’s playing the villain. I think Hugh was excited to be playing an Australian – there’s a certain Australian archetype of the athletic bully, and he was definitely accessing that. This was a chance for him to play a whole different side of himself as a performer.

Hugh Jackman is an Academy Award® nominated, Golden Globe and Tony Award winning actor who has made an impression on audiences of all ages, proving that he is as successful on stage in front of live crowds as he is on a film set. From his award-winning turn on Broadway as the 1970’s singer/songwriter Peter Allen, to his metal claw-wielding Wolverine in the “X-Men” franchise, Jackman has proven to be one of the most versatile actors of our time.

The Australian native made his first major U.S. film appearance as Wolverine in the first installment of the “X-Men” series, a role he reprised in the enormously successful “X2” and “X-Men: The Last Stand” in 2006. In May of 2009, Jackman played Wolverine in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which serves as a prequel to the popular series. This last July, 2013, audiences saw Jackman in the popular role once more in the next X-Men chapter, “The Wolverine.” Jackman reunited with the X-men team for “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which was released last May.

Late in 2012, Jackman starred in the much-anticipated film adaptation of Les Misérables, directed by Tom Hooper (of “The King’s Speech”), based on the popular stage show originally created from Victor’s Hugo famous novel of the same name. The ambitious musical featured singing captured live on set (as opposed to pre-recorded in a studio), making it one of the first films ever to successfully attempt this method. Jackman’s standout performance as protagonist Jean Valjean earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical as well as Screen Actors Guild nominations for both Best Ensemble and Best Male Actor in a Leading Role. The film also garnered him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

Opening across the Philippines on March 05, “Chappie is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Smart and Sun Cellular Offer Affordable, High-Quality Google Android One Smartphones

After introducing free mobile internet access, leading telecommunications provider Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) is set to bring Google’s Android One smartphones to the country,  strengthening further its bid to get more and more Filipinos to experience and harness the benefits of the Internet by making available an array of cutting-edge, yet affordable mobile devices.

We believe the Internet should be experienced by as many users as possible, which is why we have launched digital inclusion initiatives like our FREE Internet offer that have encouraged more people to go online. This partnership with Google for Android One will surely accelerate our ‘Internet for All’ initiative that paves the way for more Filipinos to experience the best of the Internet using their mobile phones,” said Charles A. Lim, EVP and Wireless Consumer Division Head at Smart and Sun Cellular.

As the telecom operator to exclusively offer the first Android device in the Philippines back in 2009, Smart has always been at the forefront of this initiative, and we’re scaling it even further with our Android One offers,” Lim added.

Caesar Sengupta, Google Vice President of Product Management, said, “Data connections have been a serious barrier to getting the Internet into more people’s hands. We are thrilled about Smart's plan to reduce costs on app updates and downloads for people with Android One phones — a key step to making extraordinary smartphone technology more accessible and affordable.”

Attractive, affordable offers

Android One, Google's global initiative to bring high-quality smartphones to as many people as possible, aims bring affordable and high-quality smartphones to users in the Philippines through partnerships with phone manufacturers and telecom operators like Smart.

For its initial offering, Smart has partnered with Cherry Mobile and MyPhone to bring the Android One experience to both Smart and Sun subscribers nationwide, with attractive postpaid plans and prepaid SIM bundles that come packed with free mobile data for Google Play app downloads and the latest Android OS updates.

Smart and Sun brands will be offering the Cherry Mobile One phone through attractively priced postpaid plans, which will also include FREE data allowance for Android OS updates and Google Play downloads for the first six months of the subscription. This will allow subscribers to enjoy Google's app updates without the worry of additional data charges.

Smart Prepaid will also offer FREE data allowance for Android OS updates, Google Play downloads, and Google search for those who will purchase the MyPhone Uno phone in their retail outlets nationwide.

Every Android One phone sold in the Philippines will come with the latest Android “Lollipop” mobile operating system pre-installed, and will receive timely Android OS updates once Google releases them to users worldwide. Android “Lollipop” brings a suite of enhancements to Google’s mobile operating system, including a new design language called “Material Design,” notification improvements, a battery saver feature, and multiple-user capability that allows for separate user accounts for friends or family members, among many others.

Additionally, Android One phone users will be able to download paid apps on Google Play and make in-app purchases using their prepaid loads or charge it to their postpaid accounts. They would simply have to click “Enable Smart Communications billing” when they make a Google Play transaction so they can enjoy their favorite apps and games even without a credit card.

Digital inclusion

From the very beginning, Smart had the singular objective of bringing the mobile phone into the hands of each and every Filipino. That has been our dream from the start, and this year we’re partnering with Google to bring not just devices but also fast and reliable mobile Internet connection to more users across the country,” Lim added.

Known for its groundbreaking innovations in the telecoms industry, Smart has pioneered several digital inclusion efforts over the years that have sought to allow more users to connect and access information with the help of mobile technology.

Aside from offering the first Android phone in the country, Smart has also introduced the Smart Amazing Phone, one of the first smartphones launched in the world that allowed users to access the Internet and features that used to be only available through laptops and desktop computers. In 2011, Smart also unveiled the Netphone during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which debuted a line of Android-compliant, path-breaking smartphones designed for emerging markets. It is also the world’s first smartphone backed by an operator-managed platform.

Xian Lim Answers Albay Officials' Allegation: "I was raised to be respectful and I do not do drugs."

Xian Lim Answers Albay Officials' Allegation: "I was raised to be respectful and I do not do drugs."

A lot has been said against Kapamilya actor Xian Lim on his recent appearance at the Fiesta Tsinoy Festival in Legazpi City, Albay (READ RELATED ARTICLE HERE).  Now, Xian strikes back on his detractors.

While vehemently denying all that was written about him, Xian, likewise, apologized to the Governor, to Atty. Carol Sabio-Cruz, and the people of Albay for the misunderstanding brought about by his decision not to wear the t-shirt promoting Albay.

On Twitter, Xian said:

Xian added, "My parents raised me to be respectful and generous to everyone, and my management has always stressed the virtues of decency and humility. I do not do drugs and have worked hard to get to where I am. If you send me the t shirt and after I have cleared it with my clothing endorsement, I would be more than happy to wear it online and on air. I am also very willing to promote the book of Albay,"

Albay Governor Joey Salceda Listed Down Bad Traits that Form Part of Xian Lim as a Person

Albay Governor Joey Salceda Listed Down Bad Traits that Form Part of Xian Lim as a Person

Is Xian Lim the target of yet another bad publicity? Or maybe he, actually, is.

Early today, Xian became the subject of online tirade brought about by the sentiments, reportedly, of Albay, Bicol public officials during his recent appearance at the Fiesta Tsinoy Festival in Legazpi City.

But despite putting an uncontainable happiness to his fans who attended the festivities at the Albay Astrodome on Thursday, it also brought him another allegations of being "rude".

According to Atty. Carol Sabio-Cruz, the chief of staff of Albay governor Joey Salceda and and Head of Albay's cultural office, Xian not just refused to wear a shirt depicting the Mayon Volcano with the text "Albay", the actor also shooed her away while saying "I did not come here to promote Albay."

"When I came over to see him sabi ko, 'We have something for you. [Pero] hindi ko naipakita sa kanya [yung shirt] because when I was trying to unfold it, hinawi na niya 'yung kamay ko na, 'Ayoko niyan.'"

"So, okay, 'Coffee table [book] nalang,' sabi ko. Kasi parang napahiya ako, eh. Nung binasa niya, sabi niya, 'I did not come here to promote Albay.'" she said.

Meanwhile, Albay Gover Joey Salceda, in his latest Facebook post, slams Xian for his "bastos" behavior. The Governor even questioned the actor's integerity as a person and how his parents raised him as a person.  To quote:

"Xian Lim says in my face (Atty Carol) while handing the coffee table book in front of many - "I'm not here to promote albay"." If his road manager checks his record, Albay paid for his many guestings since way back 2011 when his talent fee was just P75.000 (Ginoo ni Magayon) and now P350,000 for Fiesta Tsinoy Albay. Its either 1. His parents did not raise him well. 2. He had bad education. 3. He is not managed well. 4. His character is inversely proportional to his looks. 5. He is on something.

As of this writing, the call to declare Xian as "persona non grata" in the town of Albay is getting intense with some Albayano's putting the call on social networking sites and local radio station.

- By: Nancy Ibo Mediavillo, RNB-Albay
Ibang brand ba yon?

Sinabihan mo pang: I AM NOT HERE TO PROMOTE ALBAY.

Together with ordinary Albayanos, they are the ones who work hard, silently and patiently for Albay tourism. And based on the prevarications on his posts, he is not getting it. 1. Hindi namin pinapasuot ang Tshirt sa guests. Binibigay lang 2. The mere fact that coffee book table is called Warm Albay and the tshirt is Warm Albay should already be obvious that these are typical touristic materials. the PTCAO incident morally approximates the cruelty and brutality in Maguindanao, and what's worse we did not pay the MILF P350,000 to do it and we expected something better from him since he is not a terrorist, instead an artist. No forgiveness deserved.

We give all our guests touristic materials. One of them is a Warm Albay tshirt, not "I love Albay" tshirt. This proves he did not see the Tshirt since with so much gallantry, he shooed the staff trying na "iabot sa kanya" evidently for that one photo shot at fame.
You can ask thousands of guests we host at PTCAO if we ever ask them to wear it. Never, we just give it to them so they have souvenir.
The issue is he said "I AM NOT HERE TO PROMOTE ALBAY". Our chief-of-staff posted it as a comment as early as 1pm yesterday. We did not upload it because we did not want to affect the Fiesta Tsinoy affair.
Since we paid ABSCBN Starmagic for his services, we expect them to be fair in reporting this hurtful PTCAO incident. Ordinary PTCAO working staff ang hiniya at ininsulto niya.

In his latest statement, Gov. Salcesa said it's up to Albay provincial board to declare Xian as "persona non grata" in the town of Albay in Bicol.

Should Xian ask for an apology, is he willing to give it to him? "No forgiveness deserved."
