Sarah Meier is Metro Magazine’s New Editor-in-Chief

Model/writer/VJ/host/entrepreneur/event producer Sarah Meier joins the country’s top fashion magazine, Metro, as its new editor-in-chief.

Sarah fstarted to gain popularity at age 14 when she began her professional modeling career, which then branched out into a six-year stint as an MTV VJ for Southeast Asia. Now, with her long exposure in the fashion industry, she is expected to contribute highly to Metro's mission of highlighting the best in fashion and lifestyle.

What I am most excited about in joining the Metro team is that there is no other platform as unique and primed for growth and greatness in the Philippine fashion magazine arena. Our potential to make a significant impact in empowering women is massive — the undeniable assets that we possess within the ABS-CBN family, the unpretentious relationships we have in the fashion industry, and most importantly, a humble and hungry team that is head over (designer) heels in love with what they do,” Meier said.

Aside from a successful modelling and hosting career, Meier also explored and advanced in a lot of areas. She currently maintains a weekly column in the Arts and Culture section of the Manila Bulletin and an e-commerce site, pormada.com where she holds the position of both General Manager and Creative Director. Meier will debut her maiden issue on April, another milestone to add to her flourishing career.

TFC to Air English Subtitled Kapamilya TV Shows

TFC to Air English Subtitled Kapamilya TV Shows

The Filipino Channel (TFC) Press Release

Living its mission to be in the service of the Filipino wherever they may be and in whatever generation they belong, ABS-CBN TFC made the bold move recently to subtitle most of its popular programs in English. Now, fans of current top-rated Filipino soaps like Dream Dad, Forevermore, Oh My G and Two Wives, or talk shows like Kris TV and The Buzz, or kids shows like Matanglawin and Wansapanataym, can share their passion for Filipino content and viewing experience with non-Filipino speaking family and friends.

"This TFC initiative is an investment in the overseas Filipino family who we have pledged to serve and by that we mean all members of the family," said ABS-CBN Global COO Raffy Lopez. "Most of the elders in a migrant Filipino family want to watch TV shows in the language that they grew up. But the younger ones have acquired the language of the new home country or their non-Filipino spouses speak in English which is spoken in many countries as a native or second language.  Now, they can all gather around the television as a family again, watch, understand and enjoy TFC's globally popular and award-winning Filipino shows.  Language has ceased to be a barrier in appreciating Filipino content."

The subtitling of TFC shows started in 2012 with Maala-Ala Mo Kaya (MMK - Would You Remember?), the longest running and award-winning Filipino drama anthology.  This move was warmly received because many found it as an opportunity to discover or reconnect to Filipino culture and heritage, allowing those of Filipino ethnicity but can't speak the language to understand the show's characters and situations, and appreciate the underlying Filipino values behind their attitudes, behaviors, beliefs and decisions.

In the next years, TFC followed through by subtitling a few more shows, most notably Be Careful With My Heart which became one of the most beloved Filipino series in the world.   Today, many subscribers have expressed their appreciation for this culturally considerate move of TFC and actually called to give their feedback:

"I'm very happy that you have finally added English subtitles. Please add more.  I, like many of my friends, either have an American wife or American husband that can't follow the shows without the subtitles.  Please consider adding them to all of your shows and movies.   It will insure that I stay a subscriber and will build your business as many Americans will be interested.  Thank you." - subscriber from the Middle East

"I just logged on to watch the most recent BE CAREFUL WITH MY HEART with English subtitles... but was so surprised and happy to see additions to the English subtitles category.  I have requested more English subtitled programs and finally saw more added...  I am looking forward to much additions to this category." - subscriber from Hawaii, US

"I would like to thank Ms. Charo Santos, president of ABS-CBN, because I requested her if she can put English subtitles on all teleseryes and talk shows. There are millions of Filipino Americans who want to watch TFC teleserye but they can't understand the Filipino language. I have 4 children and they are interested to watch all Kapamilya teleserye but they don't understand it... I think if you have subtitled in English, your membership will increase by another million.  Thank you and hoping for more success of the Kapamilya Channel." - subscriber from US

"The purpose of communication is to be understood. TFC takes pride in the quality of its Filipino shows, the stories they tell and the life lessons they give.  Our shows have something to share with the world.  Ultimately, this is all about providing an increasingly diverse world with full access to Filipino content with the end that we understand each other a little better every day," said Lopez.

Here is the current list of TFC shows with English subtitles:

Follow the Footsteps of Kim Chiu and Michael Martinez and Be The Next Winner Against Asthma

Follow the Footsteps of Kim Chiu and Michael Martinez and Be The Next Winner Against Asthma

What do Kapamilya actress Kim Chiu, Journey lead vocalist Arnel Pineda and Filipino Olympic Figure Skater Michael Christian Martinez have in common?

They all have asthma and yet they continuously accomplish so much in their respective fields.

Asthma as Life-Threatening Disease

We see Kim as one of the most active actresses we have on Philippines local entertainment scene. But don't you know that she almost got killed by the disease?

"One time, may out-of-town shooting kame. Yung eksena sa tabing dagat malayo talaga sa town. Bigla akong inatake ng asthma. 'Di talaga ako makahinga. Eh kung dadalhin ako sa hospital baka 'di na ako umabot ng buhay. Nagkakagulo na talaga lahat at takot na takot na din ako. Buti nalang may isang staff kame na may asthma din, pinagamit nya yung pang-pump nya. Hayun, biglang close na kame nung staff kase she saved my life. Kaya di talaga biro magkaroon ng asthma."

Given her active lifestyle, how does she maintain to stay strong and healthy amidst the disease?

"Everyone can get the disease. Swerte ako kase I can eat anything I want - chocolates, chicken, nuts, anything basta you always have to keep an eye on what you eat, do. Always consult a doctor. Take a lot of vitamins. You don't need to think too much of the disease but instead fight it by doing things you love doing." Kim said.

Michael, on the other hand, revealed that he began experiencing asthmatic bronchitis when he was just two months old that made him stay home most of the time. But who would have taught that his love for sports could actually helped improve his health.

"Year after year my health keeps improving, so my mother fully supported me to continue skating saying it’s better to spend the money on skating than in the hospital." he said.

Now, Michael gets to travel in different parts of the world to compete and to train. He even made history as the first Filipino and first Southeast Asian athlete to qualify for the Winter Olympics.

What You Should Know About Asthma

It is  estimated that asthma affects around 235 million  people  worldwide  with  250,000 annual worldwide deaths recorded. Another 100 million people are projected to suffer from the disease by 2025.

In the Philippines, there are over 10 million cases of people with asthma  and remains the most common chronic disease of childhood morbidity as measured by school absences, emergency visits and hospitalizations.

Despite the availability of treatment guidelines and medicines for the treatment and management of asthma, the majority of patients with asthma remain to be uncontrolled thus leading to compromised lives. According to the AIRAP 2 study, only 1% of children with asthma in the Philippines are well- controlled.

90% of asthma patients expect to have symptoms as part of their condition. 53% of asthma patients regularly use rescue medication at least once per day to cope with their symptoms. In the Asia Pacific, which includes the Philippines, activity limitation caused by asthma was considerable. A mean of 44.7% of respondents reported that normal physical activity was compromised, and 37.9% believed that their choice of job or career was limited. A total of 52.7% of respondents said that sports and recreation were affected, and 37.6% believed their lifestyle was restricted. Almost
50% reported sleep disturbances.

Asthma can be a serious condition but it can be controlled. Access to doctors and treatment has been shown to significantly decrease asthma deaths and hospitalizations. People with asthma can lead normal and active lives. They can even excel.

Winners Against Asthma

On February 5, 2015, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) launched its advocacy campaign called Winners Against Asthma 2015.

The nationwide campaign aims to choose and recognize 10 young asthmatic achievers 30 years and younger who are outstanding in their respective fields despite having asthma and inspire asthma sufferers that they, too, can win against asthma.

The rationale for the target age group is driven by the fact that asthma is one of the most important chronic disease during childhood causing substantial morbidity. People within this age group are in the process of developing the necessary knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve their goals in life and asthma should not deter them from realizing their full potential. Thus it is necessary at this early stage to raise their awareness on asthma and how they can win against it.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” Movie Heats Up Philippine Theaters Beginning February 11

“Fifty Shades of Grey” Movie Heats Up Philippine Theaters Beginning February 11

Every now and then a single creation arrives, suddenly and with seismic force, to tap an unexpected vein of shared curiosity and intrigue, coming to span cultures in its popularity and becoming universally known by its name alone. Such is the phenomenon “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

Since the first episodes of E L James’ story were modestly released through an online-based publishing house in 2011, her “Fifty Shades” trilogy has grown into one of the biggest and fastest-selling book series ever, with more than 100 million copies in 52 languages consumed all over the world. The four words of its title have come to represent, to readers and nonreaders alike, a bold new emblem of mainstream sensuality.

Now the film adaptation that has been the subject of widespread speculation and boundless curiosity, whose first trailer became YouTube’s most-watched movie trailer last year, comes to the big screen as a motion-picture event for Valentine’s Day.

Stepping into the iconic roles of billionaire entrepreneur Christian Grey and curious college student Anastasia Steele are Jamie Dornan (TV’s “The Fall,” “Once Upon a Time”) and Dakota Johnson (“The Social Network,” “21 Jump Street”).

In a story that is as much about the redemption of the unattainable Christian as it is the liberation of the inexperienced Ana, the protagonists have taken on lives of their own for readers who’ve pored over the vulnerabilities of the characters and intricacies of the novels. Through them, audiences have allowed themselves to explore their own inner fantasies and aspirations.

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy”), this erotic and authentic love story from series creator E L James takes us deep inside a rich and mysterious world that explores frankly the complexities of male-female dynamics, and the limits to which we will allow ourselves to go - and to be taken.

Taylor-Johnson explains, “The fundamental reason why I wanted to make this movie is that it feels like a fairy tale with similar plotlines to things that we grew up with, although in a very adult version: A young girl meets her prince. He’s unavailable. He’s successful, fabulous, rich, but it twists and unfolds and becomes something very different. It’s also the story of this girl on a sexual exploration, a coming-of-age journey.

In many respects, Christian and Ana’s story is a love story of the most straightforward kind,” she continues. “It’s about two people falling in love and negotiating what they will and won’t do for each other, what they will and won’t give up and what journey they will go on.  Within this there are more extremities than a lot of relationships. Ana falls in love with a complicated person for a first romance and a first journey of sexual exploration. For Christian, it’s also what opens him up to start feeling, breathing and learning to love.”

Taylor-Johnson acknowledges that her approach to the material was “to treat this as an extraordinary love story and an extremely unusual and unique one. Going into it, you’re trying to finesse and find delicate, subtle moments where the two of them are starting to shift and change. That is something that has to be so finely tuned throughout the movie to keep everything in line with the journey they go on.”

Opening across the Philippines on February 11, “Fifty Shades of Grey” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

The film has been classified Rated R-18 (Strictly for Adults) by the MTRCB.

A project of ABS-CBN and the Philippine Association of Communication Educators Foundation (PACEF), the PMC aims to prepare the next generation of Filipino communication professionals and media practitioners through a series of talks and activities with the current leaders in the media industry.

On the ninth edition of the PMC, speakers will be discussing different topics in media under the theme “Media Without Borders: What the Future Holds and What You Can Do.” The three-day event will then culminate with a studio tour at the ABS-CBN Compound in Quezon City.

The speakers on the first day are ABS-CBN Customer Relationship Management head Nandy Villar (Digital Media Trends), ABS-CBN Digital Terrestrial Television head Chinky Alcedo (Digital Television), Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication president Prof. Ramon R. Tuazon (Borderless Education and ASEAN Integration), and ABS-CBN Narrowcast and DTT Head March Ventosa with Ernie Lopez and Mark Yambot of ABS-CBN Publishing Inc. (Publishing in the Digital Era).

They are joined by DZMM station manager Marah Faner-Capuyan (Radio Without Borders), Manila Radio FM and Star Music Group head Roxy Liquigan (Current Trends on Radio), ABS-CBN Integrated News head Ging Reyes (TV and Online Journalism Trends), ABS-CBN news correspondent Atom Araullo (Advocacy Journalism), and Movie and Television Review & Classification Board chairman Atty. Eugenio H. Villareal (Responsible And Discerning Viewership)

On the second day, the speakers are ABS-CBN Digital Media Division head Donald Lim (Digital Campaigns and Issues), ABS-CBN Special Projects, and Content Management & Film Archives head Leo Katigbak (Restoring Filipino Film History), Skylight Films Business Unit head Enrico Santos, Star Creatives head Malou Santos, and ABS-CBN Film Productions Inc.’s Olivia Lamasan and Angie Yu-Pineda (New Models of Creation and Distribution of Films), ABS-CBN Customer Business Development head Vivian Tin (Understanding the Audience), and ABS-CBN TV Production head Laurenti Dyogi (Kapamilya All-In).

ABS-CBN Broadcast head Cory Vidanes, Reyes and Tin will also lead the panel during a dialogue with the students.

PACEF president Marco Polo, who has been part of the PMC since its inception, expressed his excitement for the ninth edition of the PMC.

As an educator, it gives me great satisfaction to be part of something that can empower and change the lives of our students. I have seen many batches of PMC delegates come and graduate and I can say participating in this event really inspired them to work hard and prepared them for the industry they are aspiring to enter. We’re ready to inspire more students this year,” he said.

As PMC approaches its tenth year, ABS-CBN Integrated Corporate Communication Division officer-in-charge Kane Errol Choa also said the students can expect the Kapamilya Network and PACEF to continue to improve the topics and activities in the next editions of the congress.

Just as media has no borders, we also put no limit in terms of what we want to give and achieve through the PMC. We will do all we can to help make sure they are ready to lead a brilliant and responsible media that the whole nation can be proud of,” he said.

Pinay Celebrities Who Stay Virgin Until Wedding Day

Pinay Celebrities Who Stay Virgin Until Wedding Day

Source: Karen Valeza, Yahoo Southeast Asia

Believe it or not, but still there are local female celebrities who remain celibate until their big day. Credit also goes to their other halves who remain faithful, understanding and patience despite these new age where temptation you can find everywhere.

Who are these celebrities and what are their reasons for saying no to pre-marital sex:

 Nikki Gil

I think everyone knows and have made fun of it. Nobody told me to stay a virgin, or because I'm a stuck-up prude na holy-holy. It's my choice,” Nikki explained.

It will be recalled that Nikki’s decision to preserve her virginity was reported to be the cause of her break-up with Billy Crawford, who has since found a new love in Coleen Garcia.

Iya Villania

Like her close friend Nikki Gil, Iya Villania believes in remaining a virgin before marriage. Thus, Iya said she remained one until she married Drew Arellano in February 2014.

You know, I don’t look down upon other girls who practice it [pre-marital sex]. It doesn’t make you less of a person. Kanya-kanya namang values ‘yan, e. But, personally, I do believe that one should not practice pre-marital sex,” Iya said.

The Kapuso star admires her husband for respecting her wish to remain a virgin during all those 10 years they were together as sweethearts.

Doon ko naman na-confirm na mahal niya talaga ako. He was very patient, yes. I mean, it’s easy now for me to say because we’re married now.

Jewel Mische

The former actress admits she used to be “messed up,” so she wants to make things right with her fiancé Alister Curzer. Both of them believe that they should not engage in physical intimacy before marriage.

We always believe that sex is for married people. But we messed up also in the past. Now that we have found each other we are willing to pursue what we think is right. Kailangan kasi when you want that, kailangan pareho kayo ng beliefs, ng convictions. We’re helping each other to achieve that,” Jewel said.

They’re saving their kisses for their wedding day because Jewel and Alister believe it is “the doorway to physical intimacy.”

We believe that sex is God’s present. We believe that sexual intercourse, or physical and emotional union, should be a means of celebrating love, producing children, protected by the commitment of marriage,” she said.

Yeng Constantino

Iyon talaga ang clear intention namin, no to it. Kasi we want to honor our parents. We want to honor God. Gusto namin na yung relationship namin, nabi-build din namin yung friendship,” Yeng said of the reasons why she decided to save her virginity before her wedding with  fellow Christian and fiancé Yan Asuncion on February 14, in Tagaytay City.

Yeng also thought that refraining from premarital sex tests a man’s love.

It's another level that you have to save, that's for me. Maraming lalaki rin na iyon ang primary na gusto sa babae, kapag naibigay mo na, bye. Mati-test din ng babae yung lalaki kung hanggang kailan kaya siyang hintayin or without it, mamahalin pa rin ba ako.

Toni Gonzaga

Toni, who recently got engaged with Paul Soriano, her boyfriend of more than seven years, never broke her parents’ rules about a midnight curfew. They have never traveled abroad as a couple because Toni’s parents are against it.

Mahirap panindigan, but you try to avoid it (pre-marital sex) and not put yourself in that situation. Love should be greater than your lust for each other.

Naniniwala ako na love should be unconditional. Hindi porke’t mahal mo ang isang tao eh dapat ang condition mo ay dapat sexually compatible. I think love should be the strong foundation of marriage, also commitment and trust.” Toni said.

Heart Evangelista to Walk Down the Aisle Solo on Wedding Day

Heart Evangelista to Walk Down the Aisle Solo on Wedding Day

In case you thought everything's well between Heart Evangelista and her parents, think again.

Ten days before her much-awaited grandiose wedding with Senator Chiz Escudero in Balesin Island in Quezon Province, Heart is still not sure whether the old Ongpaucos will attend their wedding. Although she is still hoping they would surprise her, Heart said she does not mind walking down the aisle solo.

Actually ever since before, 'yun naman talaga ang naging problema namin ng parents ko. It's very hard for them to let go. So matagal ko na rin sinasabi, even in my previous interviews, na baka hindi sila pumunta. Siyempre may konting hope ako na dumating sila. But I've accepted that,” she said.

It is also big for me to walk na mag-isa kasi parang 'yon na rin ang naging journey ko, na maging brave. Pinaninindigan ko 'to and this is my lifetime choice. As a woman, this is where I will go,” she added.

Because her parents won't be there, the Kapuso actress said it will be her siblings who will offer her hand to the Senator in marriage.

Actually, they wanted to walk me down the aisle. Pero sinabi ko na daddy ko lang talaga ang gusto kong maglakad sa akin. So walang magre-replace sa kanya. Maglalakad ako pero sa bandang gitna, nandoon 'yung mga kapatid ko. Sila ang magbibigay sa akin kay Chiz,” she said.

Xian Lim and Other "Paddington" Stars to Grace Celebrity Screening at Robinson's Magnolia on February 5

Xian Lim and Other "Paddington" Stars to Grace Celebrity Screening at Robinson's Magnolia on February 5

On Friday night, Kapamilya actor Xian Lim, the voice behind the famous Peruvian bear called "Paddington" and other celebrities involved in the  movie are expected to grace the Philippine premiere of the blockbuster movie based from the beloved novels by Michael Bond at the Robinson's Magnolia in Quezon City.

"Paddington" follows the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British, who travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck ('Please look after this bear. Thank you.') and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist...

The cast of "Paddington" reads as a roll-call of the finest in acting talent, spanning film, television and theatre. Each of the principal cast are recognisable as many an iconic character, to generations both young and old.

Hugh Bonneville (Mr. Brown) is perhaps best known as Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, in the multi-award winning TV drama, “Downton Abbey”. Taking on the role of a father once again in "Paddington" appealed to Bonneville on several levels. “I remember having the books read to me and then reading them myself and falling in love with them. Paddington is a part of British culture, part of our DNA really. I read the script and saw how much of that DNA is preserved, even though it’s set in a contemporary world”. He continues, “It still has the flavour of the original books, which is so beautifully captured in Paul’s script. There’s also a great deal of humour running though the story - innocent, uproarious slapstick as well as clever wit – which will resonate with everyone, whether you are coming to the story with fresh eyes or as an unashamedly nostalgic parent, like myself.

As one of the first actors to come on board the project and highly aware of the public's love of the source material, Hugh felt very strongly the need to do justice to Bond's stories - but any initial concerns were very quickly forgotten: “Within about five seconds of meeting Paul and David about Paddington, I was on board. I was struck by how much Paul understood Paddington - he IS Paddington! He is as innocent, wide-eyed and as delightful as our furry friend!

As Mrs. Brown, the wonderful Sally Hawkins, who was recently nominated for an Academy Award® for her role in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, effortlessly captures her character’s good nature and inability to resist a cry for help. Being the first to engage with the little bear all alone on the platform of Paddington Station, Mrs Brown’s family is swept along by her well-meaning actions, regardless of the consequences.

Says Rosie Alison of the casting of Sally, “What we love about Sally is that she gives this very grounded performance. She talks to the bear just beautifully, as if he is a living, breathing creature. One believes in her and in turn, in Paddington.

Says Paul, “Hugh and Sally were a joy to work with. They are both tremendously accomplished writers as well as performers. For someone like me with a background in improvised comedy, it was hugely reassuring to know they wouldn’t feel straight-jacketed by the dialogue, and that together we could breathe life into the characters.”

He continues, “Their performances are the bedrock of the film: comic but touching, real yet existing in a world where a talking animal can be accepted. It’s a delicate balance, and they hold it beautifully.”

It’s perhaps every child’s dream to appear in a movie and newcomers Madeleine Harris and Samuel Joslin, cast as sparring siblings Judy and Jonathan Brown, took the experience in their stride. Through a long winter shoot in and around London, often on location and frequently filming through the night, Maddie and Sam more than matched the stamina of their seasoned co-stars. The strong connection that developed quickly between the fictional family members is evident on screen, as is the fun they clearly had working together.

Bonneville is quick to praise his young co-stars “Maddie and Sam have got fantastic energy and real focus - they’re really on the button.” And he continues, “There is that famous phrase, ‘Never work with children or animals’. Well, I can make an exception in this case.

With regards to portraying one of the most famous families in British literary history, Bonneville adds, “We had the luxury of three weeks of rehearsal in which Paul was determined that we should not only finesse the script but work on the characters and explore the relationships of the Brown family - which was invaluable. You rarely get to have that. So we had a lot of fun, playing around with the scenes, building up a strong family dynamic, which I hope comes across. The little ebbs and flows of family life are all there.”

Rounding out the Brown household is the eccentric Mrs. Bird, played by Julie Walters. A distant relative who lives with the Browns and runs the household as a very tight ship, Mrs Bird is strict, but also compassionate - when she needs to be! Worldly-wise, she thinks nothing of a walking, talking bear crossing the threshold of 32 Windsor Garden and turning all of their lives upside down.

Julie confesses to loving the prospect of working on another film which appeals whole-heartedly to the young - and to the young at heart. Certainly, knowing that David Heyman would once again be behind this adaptation must have been reassuring for Julie? “It was lovely to be asked back by David Heyman, because I had such a wonderful time on Harry Potter, you know, so it’s a real thrill to work with him again - and he’s a really nice bloke, apart from anything else!

Along with Mr. Gruber, played by the prolific British actor Jim Broadbent (another Harry Potter alumnus) and nosey next door neighbour, Mr. Curry (Peter Capaldi), the Browns are characters as familiar as Paddington himself to the generations of children that have grown up with these stories. However, a 21st century Paddington required a villain that could challenge the most savvy of young audiences. Enter stage left Millicent, the evil taxidermist.

Explains King, "Where Oliver Twist has to survive Fagin and Bill Sykes before he can find peace with Mr Brownlow, so I wanted an opposition for Paddington, someone who didn’t respond to ‘Please Look After This Bear.’ It struck me that for a young bear, the greatest opposition wasn’t someone who didn’t want him in the house, or even the street, but who felt that a bear only belonged in one place in London – the Natural History Museum!

From the outset, the desire of all involved was to deliver a Paddington to the big screen for a whole new generation of fans, whilst remaining loyal to Bond's wonderful world.

Showing nationwide on February 11, “Paddington” is released and distributed by CAPTIVE CINEMA.
