Eric Quizon Talks About the Disease that Killed Dolphy

Eric Quizon Talks About the Disease that Killed Dolphy

On Wednesday, November 19, fame actor-director Eric Quizon, during the World COPD Day 2014 event at Makati Shangri-La Hotel, talked about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) - the disease that took the life of his late father and Comedy King Dolphy.

Eric narrated how his father got the disease, his sufferings and how it caused his life.

My father was a heavy smoker. I’m a witness to that and I remembered there were times that he would have poker games in the house for three days straight. They’re just sitting there, smoking and drinking the whole time and it’s like a chimney in the house, the smoke was like everywhere.

“At the age of 46, he had to consult a doctor. And then the doctor diagnosed him and found out that his lungs were already so black and he already has emphysema at that time. And aside from that he was also asthmatic so it caused an alarm because he has poor lungs to begin with. But during that time nobody knows what COPD is and nobody could explain what it is.

“The only time that our family discovered that he was sick was when he turned 80. He has this like an oxygen tank that we carry with him wherever he go. After his birthday we have a 9 city tour in the United States. During the course of the tour (the third leg), all of the sudden he had like shortness of breath, he was having difficulty, his blood pressure was going up. He was scared, I knew he was scared like it was written all over his face. But he was able to go on with the show.

“Until suddenly Zsa Zsa approached me and said Eric we have to do something because your dad is sick. So we consulted his doctor and that’s when we found out that he has COPD. It was very emotional for the family knowing that the disease is a progressive disease and that there is no cure. There was no timeline given and it his lungs just slowly deteriorates. It was really difficult for the family and we knew that eventually he will die.

“On the bright side, the ordeal solidified our whole family, all seven units of our family.”

Facts the Everyone Must Know about COPD:

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the 21st century. The Global Burden of Disease Study by the World Health Organization projected that COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2020. (1)

In the Philippines, it ranks as the 7th leading cause of death with a prevalence rate of 13.8% in Manila. (2,3) Despite the high incidence of COPD in the Philippines, only 2% of the cases are diagnosed by doctors in contrast to the overall prevalence. (4) The cause of this under-diagnosis and under-treatment is probably due to lack of public health awareness of COPD in our country.

COPD is characterized by persistent airflow limitation that is usually progressive and associated with an enhanced chronic inflammatory response in the airways and the lungs. Cigarette smoking continues to be identified as the most commonly encountered risk factor, accounting for 80-90% of cases. (6,7) Other risk factors that should be taken into account include air pollution,  exposure to certain dust, chemicals in the workplace, indoor air pollution from biomass cooking (i.e. firewood/charcoal), and heating in poorly ventilated dwellings. Only a few cases of COPD are caused by genetic condition.

A clinical diagnosis should be considered in any person 40 years old and above who has risk factors such as exposure to noxious particles or gases.  A COPD patient may not feel anything at the start and develop cough and sputum production during the mid to late stage of the disease.  Thus, high index of suspicion is needed for any person with risk factors. Spirometry is needed to make a confident diagnosis of COPD. It is one of the diagnostic tools that is often underutilized in the Philippines. A person with risk factors and symptoms should ask his/her doctor about spirometry testing.

The impact of COPD is not only confined to its ill effects on the individual’s health but may also result in an economic and social burden that is both extensive and increasing. (6,7) There is a direct relationship between the severity of COPD and the cost of care.  In developing countries like the Philippines, COPD will certainly force two individuals to give up their work - the person afflicted with COPD and a family member who must now stay home to care for the sick individual. Given that people are often the most vital asset for developing nations, the indirect costs of COPD potentially pose a serious threat to their economies.

Appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions are needed to reduce the symptoms, frequency and severity of exacerbations and improve health status and exercise tolerance. Smoking cessation is without doubt still the single most effective way of reducing the risk of developing COPD and delaying its progression.

It is important to remember that for COPD patients, early detection of the disease and appropriate interventions are vital.  These can help slow down its advance and facilitate quality of life for the patient.  To quote 2014 World COPD Day’s theme:  IT’S NEVER TOO LATE….

I-Witness’ 15th Anniversary Special Docu 'Batch 2012: Pangalawang Yugto' Airs November 22 on GMA-7

I-Witness’ 15th Anniversary Special Docu 'Batch 2012: Pangalawang Yugto' Airs November 22 on GMA-7

On its' 15th year celebration, GMA-7 longest-running, most-awarded News and Public Affairs program "I-Witness" brings the life story Typhoon Sendong survivor Limuel Gonzaga, 2 years after the supertyphoon hit the province of Iligan.

There are nightmares that you bring even into your waking hours.  Tragedies so deep it seems the hurt may never heal.

For the students of Bayug Elementary School, the horror still grip them, two years after Typhoon Sendong hit Iligan City.

In the documentary “Batch 2012”, I-Witness shared the story of Limuel Gonzaga, who graduated salutatorian despite losing his mother, his home and his entire school to the massive flooding that destroyed his community. He may have lost everything, but not his dreams and his determination. He is now studying in a private school through the help of his sponsors.

Inside the classroom, Limuel sits in the middle surrounded by classmates much bigger than him. His shy and quiet demeanor belies the strength of a child who has stared death in the face and forges on even though faced with extreme poverty.  Not many of his classmates know that the “little guy” who ranks number one in class, sometimes goes to school hungry and completes his homework in the dark.

As part of I-Witness’ 15th anniversary series, Sandra Aguinaldo goes back to Iligan City to celebrate the inspiring story of a boy who braved all odds, this Saturday on GMA-7, after Celebrity Bluff.

Just like our most favorite blockbuster loveteams Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual, Kristine Hermosa and Jericho Rosales, Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan, this generations most loved loveteam of Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla is also set to end their hit tandem goodbye...

...but not too soon.

In one of her recent interviews, Kathryn Bernardo said she accepts the possibility that her love team with Daniel Padilla will not last forever.

Wala naman yatang love team na forever kaya kahit ayaw mo na maka-love team na iba o kaya ay hindi ka sanay, e, part talaga 'yon. Kahit ayaw namin siyempre hindi naman 'yon pwede,”

Kathryn, meanwhile, said that she and Daniel have agreed not to think about the possibility of them going their separate ways, especially since they are shooting on the remake of the '90s drama series “Pangako Sa 'yo.”

Ayaw muna naming isipin kasi nakakalungkot na kasama for almost three years tapos iba bigla 'yung kasama mo,” she said. “Well okay lang naman 'yon. Ayaw ko namang maging selfish sa kanya, pwede din siyang i-love team sa iba, pero iba lang talaga na comfotable na kayo sa isa't isa.

KathNiel have been on-screen partners for three years, in hit TV shows like “Princess and I” and “Got to Believe,” and in blockbuster films “Must Be Love” and “She's Dating the Gangster.”

An Epic Conclusion to "The Hobbit" Trilogy Opens in PH Theters on December 12

The third and final film in director Peter Jackson’s beloved Middle-earth trilogy, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventure begun in 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and continued in 2013’s “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

In the final film, the Dwarves of Erebor have reclaimed the vast wealth of their homeland, but with Smaug set loose from its tunnels, they must face the consequences of having unleashed the terrifying Dragon upon the defenseless humans of Lake-town.

But the Dwarves face an equally grave threat from within. Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) has seized his birthright as King under the Mountain, but has grown increasingly obsessed with only the Arkenstone - and refuses to honor the debts and promises he has made along the way. “Thorin is at his best when he has a plan in action, whether or not he’s been able to carry it out,” says Richard Armitage. “And I don’t think he has a plan for what happens next - which is his descent into the same madness that possessed his grandfather - which becomes the catalyst for the armies that are rallying to the Lonely Mountain to claim their gold.”

Unaffected by the great treasure that has possessed his friend and drawn armies to the foot of Erebor is Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), who is driven to a make a desperate choice to save his friend - not realizing that even greater perils lay ahead.

Gandalf’s (Sir Ian McKellen) warnings of Sauron’s (Christopher Lee) return have gone unheeded, and even as the Elves, Dwarves and Men marshal their forces, the Dark Lord’s armies of Orcs are descending on the Lonely Mountain. Facing an enemy greater than any they’ve ever known, they must decide what is worth fighting for - wealth and power, or the future of their world and those they love.

And Bilbo, the Hobbit who only wanted a little adventure, will find himself fighting for his life as five great armies go to war.

It’s interesting because, in the end, you see all of this through the eyes of Bilbo Baggins - the everyman who finds himself in the midst of war,” says Philippa Boyens. Boyens is among the screenwriting team of Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Guillermo del Toro who shaped the films from the Tolkien novel as well as the appendices the author included at the end of the The Lord of the Rings.

Ask her what the third and final film in The Hobbit Trilogy has in store for audiences and she has one word: surprises. “It’s not a redux of The Lord of the Rings films; it can’t be The Return of the King,” Boyens explains. “It is grittier, it’s grimmer. It is bigger in scale - if you can imagine! - than perhaps even the Battle of Gondor in `The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.'”

New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Present a Wingnut Films Production, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” As with the first two films in the Trilogy, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” the final film is a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), with New Line managing production.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. The international ensemble cast is led by Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, with Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom.

Opening across the Philippines on December 12, 2014 in theaters and IMAX®, “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TV5 Continues to Attract More Pinoy Youth with its Diverse Line-up of Sports, Reality and Youth-Oriented Shows

More male and youth viewers are drawn to watch TV5’s diverse line-up of sports, reality and youth-oriented programs. This finding rose from Nielsen Media’s 3-year viewership data, which shows TV5 consisting of a combined proportion of males and youth viewersfar bigger than ABS-CBN’s and GMA’s and on an increasing trend since 2012.  To date, TV5’s males+youth viewers combined would account for 77% of its viewers, compared to ABS-CBN’s 70% and GMA’s 69%.

The Kapatid Network’s male-skewed sports and reality programs – driven mostly by the live telecast of the PBA games, highly anticipated boxing and MMA matches, other sports coverages, and the intensified The Amazing Race Philippines Season 2 (TARP 2) primetime airing – have been instrumental in drawing in not just male audiences but also young viewers within the age segment of 2 to 29 years old.

Teen viewership for TV5 has also significantly soared following the launch of the hit primetime mini-series Wattpad Presents. According Nielsen Media Research, comparing against past 4-week average prior to launch, TV5 increased its national urban teen absolute viewership by 31% during the Wattpad Presents timeslot, compared to ABS-CBN’s 3% and GMA’s -2%. Moreover, in terms of proportion, the data shows that Wattpad Presents accounted for the highest increase in TV viewing among teens within the program’s timeslot, thus driving TV viewership among this highly elusive viewer segment in total nationwide urban Philippines.

Both Wattpad Presents and The Amazing Race Philippines Season 2 are also making remarkable traction among the youth segment online, particularly in social media where young viewers show active engagement, thereby boosting the numbers for TV5’s social media accounts. In fact, both programs have each made 372M impressions on Twitter for the keywords “Wattpad Presents” (Source: Sysomos, September 2014) and “AmazingRacePHILIPPINES” (Source: Sysomos, August-November 2014). For “Wattpad Presents”, there were 48,041 Twitter mentions from 30,879 Twitter users while “AmazingRacePHILIPPINES” generated a total of 111,351 Twitter mentions from 67,017 Twitter users for the cited periods.

TV5’s young viewers are also are also actively engaged on Facebook, as proven by the 3% organic growth in fans among the 18-24 age group on the TV5 Manila Facebook Page (Source: Facebook Insights, July to September 2014).

Given the encouraging viewership increase and social media engagement TV5 has been receiving from Male + Youth viewers, the network has more reason to continue its “happy” programming and provide more quality shows that cater to the new breed of progressive viewers. As TV5’s community of viewers, fans and followers consistently grows, more people are undoubtedly making the switch and loving what they find over at the Happy Network.

The Amazing Race Philippines Racers Sexy Besties Sanctioned by Derek Ramsay for Disrespectful Attitude

With their disrespectful attitude to the race and its previous racers, RR Enriquez and Jeck Maierhofer (Sexy Besties), were sanctioned by The Amazing Race Philippines host Derek Ramsay.

After the shocking reveal of a super-leg last week which took the 7 remaining racers from La Union to Ilocos to Cavite to Cebu, it seemed that RR and Jeck would have a chance to catch up and beat better performing racers, but they were only able to delay the inevitable as they still ended up as this leg’s eliminated team. Upon reaching the pit stop at Ibiza Beach Club in Movenpick Hotel on Mactan Island, Derek got straight to the point and told the Sexy Besties that their race was over. The race master was not able to hide his disappointment in RR and Jeck because he felt that the girls “disrespected” the teams who gave their best despite finishing last. For Derek, it seemed like the Sexy Besties just “gave up on the Race”.

No?! We didn’t give up,” RR said in defense of herself and Jeck, but Derek asserted that they could have done more: “No disrespect to you guys, I’m just saying na the other teams were very disappointed na binigay nyo na lang. At the end of the day, competition ito.

Eventually, Derek got his message across and made RR realize that if they had not handed over some challenges to the other teams, they might still be in the race.

Meanwhile, Jeck admitted in their confessional that they were hurt by Derek’s words. For the 28-year-old wife of basketball star Rico Helterbrand, the race had been one of the hardest things they have ever done.  She prayed and asked for people not to judge them and apologized if they ever disrespected and disappointed anyone. At the end of the day, Jeck shared that they had no regrets in joining the race.

Derek’s unanticipated reprimand of team Sexy Besties wasn't the only highlight of this week’s Amazing Race. Another big surprise that came out of this leg is the improved rankings of all-male teams Mag-Ama AJ and Jody Saliba and Mr. Pogi Kelvin Engles and JP Duray who finished first and second, respectively. AJ and Jody dethroned dating couple Phoebe Walker and Matthew Edwards’ from their back-to-back pit stop wins and were able to bag the PHP 200,000.00 cash prize from Shell V Power Nitro+ while Kelvin and JP proved that they really are this season’s “#MiracleBoys” when they placed second after being stuck at the bottom two for the past three legs.

Team Magkapatid Jet and Yna Cruz placed third, followed by teams Dating Couple Phoebe and Matthew, Chefs Roch Hernandez and Eji Estillore, and Nerds Vincent Yu and Ed Manguan who placed fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

With only six teams left, “The Amazing Race Philippines 2” continues to become more exciting as tougher challenges await the racers in the 7th leg covering Cebu to Bohol.

Powered by Rexona and sponsored by PLDT Home Telpad, Summit Natural Drinking Water, Kia, RCD Royal Homes, Shell, and Resorts World Manila, the show airs at 9PM daily on TV5.

Here's What to Expect in One Direction Four Album

World's famous British pop boy group One Direction, on Monday, released their fourth studio album simply called "Four".

The album, released in time for the holiday shopping season, features a gradually mature sound of heartthrobs Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlins but retains One Direction's style of fresh-faced pop but increasingly incorporates rock elements, with several tracks resembling the power ballads of 1980s arena bands.

The first track, "Steal My Girl," opens the album with keyboards reminiscent of Journey's hits before quickly merging into the boy band style of a polished vocal chorus.

One Direction, unlike earlier generations of synthesizer-driven boy bands, has always embraced guitar. On the latest album, the guitar leads the way on several tracks including "Clouds" and "Stockholm Syndrome."

The lyrics revolve around familiar themes of youthful love but also repeatedly speak of coming to terms with getting "older," with the band's senior member Louis Tomlinson hitting the ripe age of 23 next month.

"Let's have another toast to the girl almighty / Let's pray we stay young, stay made of lightning," Niall Horan sings on "Girl Almighty."

The ballad "18" waxes nostalgic for that age: "I want to love, like you made me feel when we were 18."

"Act My Age," which appears on the album's deluxe edition, predicts the future with dread, with the first verse running,

"When I'm fat and old and my kids think I'm a joke, 'cause I move a little slow when I dance/ I can count on you after all that we've been through."

Just like KathNiel and JaDine, You Too Can Have Your "Happy Ever After" Read to Find Out How #UnliLove

What do Philippine showbiz' well-loved loveteams Kathryn Bernardo - Daniel Padilla, James Reid - Nadine Lustre, and Elmo Magalona - Janine Gutierrez have in common?

Undeniable "chemistry". http://smrt.ph/uct50-showbiznest

And that is very true when finding your one true love. When you meet someone that takes your breath away, someone who makes you smile for no reason other than just thinking about him/her, the one that matches you but fell short in expressing your emotions, don't have the guts to tell how you feel....what would you do? Call him/her? Text him/her? Send him/her love messages online?

But what if you run out of resources?

Worry no more, here comes Smart Unli Call and Text 50 to help you find the one that almost got away.

Smart Unli Call and Text 50 offer 3 days of unlimited Trinet calls (Smart, Sun, TNT), texts to all networks, and 50MB surfing. Its core strength is the 3 day validity – at only P16.6/day, it is the lowest unli call & text offer of Smart on a per day basis. This poses a strong value proposition for existing UCT 25 and UCT 30 subscribers, offering them, at the minimum, a “Buy Two Get one Free” offer as compared to their existing spend.

The second strength of the offer is the strong Unli Call & Text inclusion. The rise of dual sim users across the category has given a premium on All network texts offers while the continued growth of Sun makes the Trinet Calls inclusion a viable component to have.

When put together, Unli Call and Text 50 becomes one of the strongest and best value proposition that is available nationally. It also curves subscriber behavior to increase usage by locking them in over a longer validity at a big discount as compared to a per day cost.

Watch the video below to help you maximize this exciting offer and have that "Happy Ever After":

To register, you just have to dial *121# or text UCT50 to 4545. #SmartUCT50

Iza Calzado and John Prats Set to Transfer to GMA-7

Is John Prats ready to become a Kapuso star? A decision he thought would boost his showbiz career.

On Friday, November 14, John's manager Arnold Vegafria was spotted having a meeting with GMA Network executives prompting rumors that he is planning to switch network. Among Arnold pool of talents include Kapuso stars Iya Villania and Martin del Rosario who both left ABS-CBN in favor of GMA-7, Carla Abellana, Jessa Zaragoza, and John's sister Camille Prats.

John, a homegrown Kapamilya star, started with the network at an early age of 8 and has been in the network since then. He is currently seen in late night gag show "Banana Nite" and Sunday noontime variety show "ASAP 19".

Meanwhile, Iza Calzado, a former Kapuso actress turned Kapamilya is also eying a possibility of moving back to GMA Network after her contract expires in 2015.

Iza's latest TV project is Piolo Pascual starrer "Hawak Kamay" which is set to air its finale episode next Friday. In the series, Iza plays support to child stars Zaijan Jaranilla, Andrea Brillantes, Xyriel Manabat and Yesha Camile - a role that she doesn't think fitting to her stature as an actress not challenging enough to display her acting prowess.
