Rob Marshall, the talented filmmaker behind the Academy Award®-winning musical “Chicago” and Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” helms the film, which is based on the Tony®-winning original musical by James Lapine, who also penned the screenplay, and legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, who provides the music and lyrics. Alden Richards is Jose Rizal in 'Ilustrado'

After a quite number of award-winning actors who played Dr. Jose P. Rizal in previous biography movies and TV specials, Kapuso actor Alden Richards is set to prove he also fit the bill as the country's national hero in GMA News TV docu-drama series entitled "Ilustrado."

This is something new for me.  Kasi first time ko pong gagawa ng isang project na meron akong ipu-portray na isang national hero. Mahirap po. Hindi biro pero excited ako for this project and I've never been so hands-on in any of my projects, ngayon lang for Ilustrado. Kung nag-e-effort ako before sa soaps ko, doble effort for this," Alden said of the series which will revolve around Rizal’s sacrifices in the name of freedom and sovereignty for the Philippines.

So how did Alden prepare for the role?

"The production team gave me a few pointers kung ano ang puwede kong pag-aralan. Binigyan nila ako ng CDs, ng documentaries about Rizal, movies before like Cesar Montano's Jose Rizal. Pinanood ko 'yun. I did a lot of workshops with Kylie, with our director, with my acting coach. Andami eh, it's very different from doing a soap na you're going to create your own character." he said.

Alden said the role is different from any role he has had in the past.

"The difference between Ilustrado and other soaps or primetime teleserye is kapag soap, you create something different, you create on your own. In doing this bayani serye, mayroong basis from history. You create it in line with what was listed in history. Hindi puwedeng ikaw lang 'to kasi Jose Rizal 'to eh. It's still 70 percent Jose Rizal, 30 percent of Alden."

"Ilustrado" also stars Kylie Padilla as Leonor Rivera, Solenn Heussaff and Ms. Jaclyn Jose.

Slated to air starting October on GMA Telebabad timeslot, Ilustrado is being handled by the same team that worked on the historical series, Katipunan.

PBB All In 3rd Big Placer Jane Oineza celebrated her 18th birthday on Sunday, September 14, with no other than her rumored boyfriend as escort.

Jane also revealed the reason why she decided to have the DLSU Green Archers star player as her escort, “Wala na rin ako maisip na ibang escort kundi siya.”

Meanwhile, Jeron said he is honored that Jane chose him to be his escort during her debut.

Siyempre super happy ako. Nung sinabi nga niya sa akin hindi ako naniwala. Sabi ko ‘Hindi joke yan ah?’ Akala ko niloloko lang niya ako. Pero super happy ako,” he said.

When asked by the entertainment press whether they already have a mutual understanding.

Sa akin meron, hindi ko alam sa kanya,” Jeron said.

TV5 and Radyo5 Davao Team Up To Promote Health and Wellness via Several Month-Long Activities

TV5 Press Release

TV5 continues to lead the way in delivering active and relevant public service through its various CSR efforts and programs that ultimately aim to promote health and wellness among Filipinos.

Most recently, TV5 and Radyo5 in Davao joined forces anew to launch a whole slew of month-long activities in the region that combined fitness, health, and fun, which is the Kapatid Network’s simple way of ‘giving back’ to the community.  More importantly, these CSR activities also reflect the Network’s belief that a healthier, more productive and more efficient citizenry will translate to a more progressive community.

Such activities included “Zumba Saturdays” wherein Davaoeños of all ages were able to participate in the country’s latest easy-and-safe exercise craze. This activity, which was in partnership with Rotary 2000, had more than 200 participants, with families and groups of friends making this their weekly bonding and fitness activity.

The Kapatid Network and Radyo5 Davao once again partnered with Rotary 2000 for a blood-letting activity in support of the Philippine National Red Cross’ drive to increase the dwindling platelet supply for dengue victims. The network proudly served as the blood-letting activity’s main organizer as well as its critical partner for information dissemination.

Hand-in-hand this time with the Davao Doctor’s Hospital, TV5 and Radyo5 Davao also organized the “Operation Bukol and OB Screening” program with a number of surgeons, OB gynecologists and other specialists.  The program is aimed at addressing cancer prevention through early detection.  More than just the usual consultations, the doctors on call also conducted pre-natal screenings and free operations to remove cysts, mass and tumors.

Meanwhile, for the month of September, TV5 and Radyo5 Davao are all set to take their ‘give back’ initiative even further by also spearheading a city-wide feeding program for children in various barangays in Davao. This activity is also meant to encourage children to drink milk for healthier bodies and sharper minds.

For interested donors and partners of TV5 and Radyo5 Davao’s upcoming CSR initiatives, please contact TV5 Davao’s Public Service Desk Coordinator, Sally Sanglay, via +63908-886-0442.

'Dracula Untold' Opens in Philippine Theaters on October 15

Columbia Pictures Press Release

Almost an entire century after the world’s cinematic introduction to Dracula placed audiences under his haunting spell, the studio that pioneered the genre reawakens one of legend’s most captivating figures in an action-adventure that heralds a pulse-pounding rebirth of the age of monsters.

Luke Evans (Fast & Furious 6, The Hobbit series) transforms from the cursed man history knows as Vlad the Impaler to an all-powerful creature of the night in Universal Pictures’ Dracula Untold, the origin story of the alluring immortal we have come to fear as the sun sets: Dracula.

The year is 1462, and Transylvania has enjoyed a prolonged period of peace under the just and fair rule of the battle-weary Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia, and his beloved and brave wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon of The Amazing Spider-Man 2). Together, they have brokered peace for their country and ensured its people are well-protected, especially from the powerful Ottoman Empire - an ever-expanding scourge that has its sights on global domination.

But when Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper of Captain America: The First Avenger) demands 1,000 of Wallachia’s boys - including Vlad’s own son, Ingeras (Art Parkinson of HBO’s Game of Thrones) - be torn from their parents’ homes and forced to become child soldiers in his army, Vlad must decide: do the same as his father before him and give up his son to the sultan, or seek the help of a monster to defeat the Turks but ultimately doom his soul to a life of servitude.

Vlad journeys to Broken Tooth Mountain, where he encounters a foul demon (Charles Dance of Game of Thrones) and enters into a Faustian bargain - one that gives the prince the strength of 100 men, the speed of a falling star and enough power to crush his enemies. However, he will be inflicted with an insatiable thirst to drink human blood.

If by the end of three days Vlad manages to resist, he will return to his former self, and perhaps in that time manage to save his people. Though should he drink, he will be forced to dwell in the darkness for the rest of his days, feeding only on the blood of humans…and destroying all that he holds dear.

In his feature-film directorial debut, Gary Shore helms the action-adventure Dracula Untold from a screenplay written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless (Gods of Egypt).

Joining director Shore behind the screen is a top-notch crew of filmmakers, led by producer Michael de Luca (Captain Phillips, upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey), cinematographer John Schwartzman (The Amazing Spider-Man, upcoming Jurassic World), editor Richard Pearson (Maleficent, Iron Man 2), production designer Francois Audouy (The Wolverine, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Academy Award®-winning costume designer Ngila Dickson (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King) and composer Ramin Djawadi (Pacific Rim).

Dracula Untold is executive produced by Alissa Phillips (Moneyball), Joe Caracciolo, Jr. (The Wolverine), Thomas Tull (Godzilla) and Jon Jashni (Pacific Rim).

Opening across the Philippines on October 15, “Dracula Untold” is distributed by United International Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Sharp Calculators, in partnership with Mathematics Trainers Guild, Philippines (MTG) and Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), launched the search for Ten Outstanding Young Mathematicians on Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Makati Shangri la Hotel.

Partnering with two of the biggest Mathematics organizations in the country, Mathematics Trainers Guild, Philippines (MTG) and Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP), the SHARP Minds Program sponsored Mathematics activities and programs in member schools with the goal of recognizing the sharpest math minds and transforming the pedagogy of mathematics teaching in the Philippines.

This year, Sharp Calculators furthers its advocacy by partnering with more educational institutions such as the Department of Education-National Capital Region (DepEd-NCR), Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP), Philippine Council of Mathematics Educators, Inc. (MathTEd)as it launches the very first search for the TEN OUSTANDING YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS (TOYM) from National Capital Region.

With TOYM Awards, Sharp Calculators aims to foster the academic excellence of the Filipino Youth in Math as we recognize their extraordinary math skills to motivate them further in becoming the future think tanks of this country. We also hope to raise the status of mathematics in society — to stimulate the interest of the students, the academic and the general public to the significance of Math in the development of the society,” said Collins International Trading Corporation’s Assistant Vice President Mr. Lucero Ong.

Notable Filipino mathematicians such as Raymundo Favila, Casimiro del Rosario, Gregorio Y. Zara, Amador Muriel, Tito A. Mijares and Jose A. Marasigan have all been recognized for their contributions to diverse fields of physics, astronomy, biophysics and biotechnology. Who knows maybe the next great Mathematician would be among our TOYM awardees,” Mr. Ong added.

The search is open to all public and private high school students in the National Capital Region who have completed at least two years of high school. They must be Filipino citizens, either naturalized or born. The nominee must be among the Top 3 students in math as certified by the school principal and the award will be based primarily on the nominee’s performance on national and international competitions.

A recommendation from School principal / Mathematics head with supporting documents will be the basis of judging. For students who are chosen to the top 20, each involvement on activities included in the recommendation of the principal/math head or other recognized authority will be reviewed and assessed by judges/co-presenters. The said recommendations will be the basis of the judges’ questions for the panel interview.

The Deliberation/ Final interview of finalist will be conducted by representatives from Department of Education NCR, DOST-SEI, MTG Philippines, MSP, MathTed

The TOYM awardees will be the first batch of Sharp Calculators’ Youth Ambassadors that will inspire and encourage the Filipino youth to strive and achieve academic excellence through school tours and mathematics symposiums. They will be receiving plaque of excellence, cash prizes and gifts from Sharp Calculators and sponsors.

The deadline for nominations will be on January 5, 2015, with the awarding ceremonies scheduled on February 2015.

Children's Classic Story 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day' Now Disney Comedy Film

Walt Disney Press Release

Walt Disney Pictures expands the 32-page children's classic book “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” by Judith Viorst into a family comedy starring Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner.

The film follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life - a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom, dad, brother and sister all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one.

Inspired by Viorst’s sons Alexander, Anthony and Nicholas, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” was published in 1972. With more than 2 million copies in print, it became an ALA Notable Children’s Book and won a George G. Stone Center Recognition of Merit, a Georgia Children’s Book Award and distinction as a Reading Rainbow book.

The book has a wonderful following,” says Miguel Arteta, who directed the big-screen adaptation. “So many people grew up with it in the ’70s, remember it fondly, and now, as parents, are reading it to their kids. It resonates with people because it makes it okay to admit that sometimes things aren’t going to go your way.”

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” is the first live-action film adaptation of the beloved children’s classic. Filmmakers knew Alexander’s day would have to get much worse than the original 32-page picture book. “How do you take a short picture book and make it into a full feature film?” asks producer Lisa Henson. “The idea for the film adaptation was to use the story in the book as the first act of the movie. The second two acts of the film had to be a completely original storyline set during a second day that is even worse than Alexander’s first terrible, horrible, very bad day.

Enter Rob Lieber, a graduate of NYU’s prestigious Tisch School of the Arts film program, who had adapted children’s and young adult books like “Septimus Heap” and “Jeremy Cabbage” into feature scripts. “What everybody loves about the book is that it is about a kid who seems to have a dark cloud over him,” says the screenwriter. “He feels like he can do no right and everything’s going wrong. I think most of us have felt the same way some days, so I really identified with Alexander. He was having a bad day and his family couldn’t understand what he was going through. That was the spark for the rest of the film’s story.

Filmmakers, while keeping the spirit of the book, opened up the bad-day potential to the rest of the family. “We wanted this to be a family movie that parents would enjoy as much as their kids,” says producer Dan Levine. “So each of the other family members - the brother, sister, parents, even the baby - endure their own special disasters for the day.”

I have four kids myself and we’ve had lots of terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days,” adds producer Shawn Levy. “We wanted to make a movie that’s ultimately funny and sweet in the way that a family can unite around a catastrophic 24 hours.

There’s a sense of safety when it comes to family,” says Arteta, “though it’s easy to lose track of that sometimes when everyone is wrapped up in their own lives.

Arteta treats the film’s disasters with his signature independent moviemaking style - infusing a blend of irreverent humor and enough heart to keep viewers invested in the characters’ off-road adventures. “There’s something very madcap, hectic and delicious about day two in the movie when everybody is having a terrible day at the same time,” he says. “Every family can relate to that feeling of chaos.”

Opening across the Philippines on October 15, 2014, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Ai Ai delas Alas and 20-year-old Boyfriend Gerald Sibayan Went Public With Their Relationship

After two failed marriages, Ai Ai delas Alas again declares, "I'm inlove."

Some people might disapprove and find her new relationship oddly disgusting,  but the 50-year-old comedy queen proudly went public with her 20-year-old boyfriend named Gerald Sibayan during the 48th birthday celebration of "Tanging Ina" director Wenn Deramas on Saturday, September 13.

Ai Ai describes Gerald, who is part of De la Salle University Badminton team, as "Napakabait, napaka-maalalahanin, napaka-gentleman. At saka okey na sa mas bata, kesa naman sa may asawa. O, ‘di ba, naninira ng pamilya! Ayoko nung matanda na may asawa. Saka hiwalay, ‘tapos may mga anak pa! Napakakumplikado!

"Pakikisamahan mo pa yung anak. Pakikisamahan mo pa yung nanay ng anak. Tapos ipagsa-shopping mo yung tatay. Ipagsa-shopping mo rin yung nanay." Biro pa niya, “At least, yung ngayon, isang team lang! National pa, ‘di ba?" she added.

Asked if they're planning to get married soon, the comedy queen said, "Ay, hindi! Waley, waley. Ayaw, ayaw!"
