Smart Talk ’N Text Offers PISONet, The Most Affordable Mobile Data Service

Manila, Philippines - A breakthrough mobile data platform developed by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart), the undisputed leader in mobile, will soon enable its subscribers to access the Internet on their mobile phones for as low as P1, the most affordable mobile Internet service to date.

Dubbed “PisoNet,” Smart’s new mobile Internet offer will be initially available to Talk ’N Text (TNT) subscribers and shall allow access to all apps and websites on mobile phones for only P1 per 10 minutes, with the exception of video streaming sites and file-sharing activities.

Set to be rolled out this month, the service is much more affordable than the standard P5 per 15-minute charging rate for mobile Internet.

Now, one peso is all you need to access the Internet. PisoNet thus brings the many benefits of the Internet to more Filipinos nationwide, especially those who are accessing the Internet for the first time using their phones,” said Charles A. Lim, EVP and Head of the Wireless Consumer Division at Smart.

With this upcoming service, the user is not limited to specific sites or apps.  They can thus access the mobile apps and sites that are most relevant to them at a more affordable price,” Lim added.

PisoNet is thus expected to surpass Smart’s growth momentum in mobile data, which has been growing at a 73% rate from last year’s figures, as more Filipinos gain access to the Internet via their mobile phones.

PIONEERING PLATFORM

PisoNet will be delivered through a pioneering mobile internet platform which enables Smart’s mobile phone data network to efficiently manage and shape the flow of Internet data traffic. As a result, network resources are used more efficiently to deliver the internet services that people want.

This platform unmatched by any other country in the world is a technical breakthrough that enables us to offer very affordable Internet ‘sachets’ sustainably,” Lim explained. “This means we can keep offering best-value mobile Internet products for as low as ‘piso’.

This enables Smart to offer data services in “sachets” without sacrificing consumer experience, allowing subscribers to pay only for the Internet services that they need on an “always on” basis.

The same platform also powers PowerApp, the telco’s suite of mobile Internet packages that allows subscribers to access Internet bundles - such as Social, Photo, Email, Chat, and individual apps—for as low as P5 per day.

HOLY GRAIL

This is the Holy Grail for Internet advocates who want to bridge the digital divide while sustaining quality of service. And we’ve taken one big stab at it, using this groundbreaking platform targeted at one of the largest prepaid markets in the world,” explained Dennis Mendiola, co-founder of Smart subsidiary Chikka, which developed the platform.

Globally, telecommunications companies face the challenge of connecting “the next 5 billion users” who are largely prepaid mobile phone users with limited budgets for mobile internet usage.

Telcos around the world until now just offer data packages akin to ‘eat-all-you-can’ buffets at a premium price with little regard for efficient use of data resources. Our platform allows Smart to offer data at much higher level of efficiency, thus making it possible for us to offer much more affordable prices,” added Mendiola.

PisoNet will soon be initially available to TNT subscribers, who only need to simply text PISONET to 5555 to enjoy the offer.  PowerApp, meanwhile, offers various packages that can be availed of by Smart and TNT prepaid and postpaid subscribers. To know more, visit smart.com.ph/powerapp.

Pinoy Boxers Triumph in 'Pinoy Pride 27: Duel in Dubai'

 TFC Press Release

Filipino fighting machines, Genesis “Azukal” Servania, “King” Arthur Villanueva, and Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista, triumphed over their Latino counterparts in the recently concluded slugfest, “Pinoy Pride 27: Duel in Dubai” in the Dubai World Trade Center on Friday (Dubai time), made possible by the joint forces of premier network The Filipino Channel (TFC), ABS-CBN Sports channel Sports+Action, and ALA Promotions International.

In the main event, the undefeated 23-year old Servania knocked down his Mexican opponent, Jose “Matador” Cabrera, retaining his WBO Intercontinental Super Bantamweight title.  Servania proved to be an aggressive fighting machine as he threw combination after combination to put down his opponent.  At the end of the ninth round, Cabrera’s corner man called the match to a stop due to a cut under the boxer’s left eye that resulted to Servania’s victory.  Servania’s technical knock-out win places his record to 25 wins with no defeats, 11 of which came from his knock-out successes.  Servania beamed: “He (Cabrera) was tough but thank God I prevailed.  Thank you to all who supported and prayed for me.  To all the Filipinos in Dubai and back in the Philippines, para sa inyo po ang tagumpay na ito! (This victory is for all of you!)”

Villanueva, meanwhile, also gave his unyielding punches to score a winning split decision over Nicaraguan boxing beast, Henry “El Crespo” Maldonado, securing him the IBF International Jr. Bantamweight title.  Villanueva may have been careless after being knocked down during the second round but his determination and the support from screaming Filipino fans during the match made him tougher and made him throw even firmer punches that earned him the majority nod from the judges.  The final score revealed 117-110, 116-113 in favor of Villanueva and 114-113 for Maldonado.  Villanueva now stands with a still unbeaten record of 26 wins with 14 knockouts.  Villanueva dedicated his victory to all his supporters, especially the overseas Filipinos who watched him triumph over his adversary.  He said: “Sobra-sobra ang pasasalamat ko sa mga Pinoy na nanood ng laban.  Sobrang pinalakas ang loob ko ng mga cheers ng mga kababayan natin. (I’m very thankful to all the Filipinos who watched the fight.  Their cheers really pushed me to fight even harder.)”

The crowd favorite Bautista, also ran away with a majority technical decision win over Mexican boxer, Juan Jose “Piquet” Martinez with scores of 68-65, 67-65, and 66-66 in the non-title bout.  The crowd saw a fierce and aggressive duel as both fighters wanted to knock each other down.  Bautista saw the opportunity during the fifth round and was able to take down his foe.  But on the seventh round, the battle was brought to a halt due to a head clash that opened a huge cut in Bautista’s left eyelid.  The seasoned fighter, whose win served as his second Super Featherweight comeback, now holds a record of 36 wins, three losses with 26 knockouts.

A total of 4,000 avid boxing fans, mostly Filipinos, were in attendance to witness the historical event in Dubai including the Philippine Consul General, Frank Cimafranca and other dignitaries and celebrities.  Tickets were sold out and the organizers had to turn down hundreds.

ALA Promotions International President and CEO Michael Aldeguer shared his excitement over the successful run of the first Pinoy Pride series abroad and expressed his overwhelming gratitude to Filipinos who were present during the event.  He said: “This is only the first of many boxing events for ALA International in collaboration with ABS-CBN Sports+Action and TFC.  With the success of Duel in Dubai, we will continue to bring in and showcase the talents of our Filipino fighters to the world, where there are Filipinos.”

ABS-CBN Middle East Managing Director Edgardo Garcia affirms this and says that the Pinoy Pride series’ thrust is actually consistent with TFC’s mantra for its 20th anniversary – ‘Galing ng Filipino.’  Garcia said: “This year, we bring forth our mission of being the Filipino’s indispensable companion overseas by highlighting values such as resilience (tatag ng loob) and pride (dangal) and proving to the world that the Filipino embodies these values.  Our Filipino fighters definitely showcased their skills during the fight and proved themselves as personifications of these values.

Relive the biggest and grandest boxing match of the year, “Pinoy Pride 27: Duel in Dubai” via TFC’s male channel, BRO channel on Saturday, September 13 (4:30 a.m. Pacific time, 2:30 p.m. Riyadh time, 1:30 P.M. Milan time, and 9:30 p.m. Sydney time or Australian Eastern Standard Time/AEST) with replays on Monday, September 15 (9:00 a.m. Riyadh time, 8:00 A.M. Milan time, 4:00 p.m. Sydney time or AEST, and 11:00 PM on Sunday, September 14, Pacific time).

Boxing fans may also catch the historical Duel in Dubai via TFC’s internet protocol service (IPTV) and official online service, TFC.tv.

Watch, Sing, Laugh and Fall in Love with TV5's Weekly Musical Program 'Trenderas'

TV5 Press Release

TV5 is once again at the forefront of offering viewers a more exciting and a different kind of entertainment with the much-awaited debut of its new program, the musical-drama-comedy “Trenderas”, which takes center stage during its special 1-hour pilot telecast on Saturday, September 13 at 9:00PM.

The Kapatid Network takes the viewers’ strong interest and relatability to aspirational underdog stories to even greater heights by introducing this one-of-a-kind weekly spectacle, highlighted by musical numbers that embody friendship, ambition and dreams. Moreover, the viewing experience of “Trenderas” will most definitely be made even more unique and exciting as the program captures the raw emotions in all these songs, with the lyrics becoming the dialogue of the various characters.  With this, viewers will definitely find themselves wanting to sing along with the characters as they express their emotions thru the lyrics of various popular and well-loved songs.

“Trenderas” will be top-billed by the Kapatid Network’s newest up-and-coming stars in the talented trio of Isabelle de Leon (as Isabelle), Katrina ‘Suklay Diva’ Velarde (as Diva), and Lara Maigue (as Lara) - who play the role of three best friends who make ends meet by selling trinkets on the street. While they are very unique in their own respective ways from each other, it is ultimately their shared passion for music and their dream of one day becoming professional singers that keep them strong despite their daily struggles in life.

The program will chronicle their roller-coaster of a journey towards their ultimate dream as they transform from ordinary ‘tinderas’ to the country’s newest trending sensations - which all begins when a candid video by a random pedestrian capturing the girls’ unique musical performance in the marketplace goes viral.

The dynamics in the program are further made intriguing with the underlying subplot mainly involving Dingdong Avanzado (as Julio), Ara Mina (as Diane) and Tina Paner (as Veronica), which as it unfolds, will definitely add to the drama in the musical.

“Trenderas” is also set to capture the hearts of the viewers with the entrance of hunk stars Carl Guevarra (as EJ) and Edward Mendez (as Benjo), whose interactions with Isabelle and Lara, and Katrina respectively, are eventually poised to bring viewers their weekly dose of ‘kilig’.

Meanwhile, sassy and outrageous comediennes K Brosas (as Katy), Cacai Bautista (as Miley) and Kitkat (as Lady) collectively play the role of the notorious “Tres Malditas”, the trio of vendor-villains who will do anything they can just to hinder Isabelle, Katrina and Lara from reaching their dream. Rounding up the cast also are veteran television stars Francine Prieto (as Viveka) and Rez Cortez (as Mother Pearl).

And finally, playing a very special guest role in the musical program, and marking her return to the television spotlight is the country’s one-and-only Superstar, Nora Aunor (as Celestina Cruz), who portrays the character of a famous singer who will ultimately serve as the mentor and inspiration of the three “Trenderas” girls.

And with even more surprises to come, be sure not to miss the grand entrance of the country’s newest trending sensations, as “Trenderas” premieres with a special 1-hour pilot episode packed with all-out musical scenes - featuring  some of the all-time favorite hits of the Eraserheads, Ogie Alcasid, Apo Hiking Society, Itchyworms, Aegis and many more - on September 13 at 9:00PM, and every Saturday at 9:30- 10:00pm thereafter, only on TV5.

Free Yourself From Dry, Sensitive Skin and Fully Embrace Life with GSK Physiogel® Free In My Skin Movement

Manila, Philippines - To be free is the right of every modern woman. The freedom to make her own decisions and pursue her dreams and passion.

But that freedom should begin from within, from loving oneself and liberating it from insecurities. Being free is being comfortable in one’s own skin. Unfortunately dry, sensitive skin may cause emotional struggles and self-doubt, making them miss out on life’s many opportunities each day.

Physiogel®, the number-one most prescribed moisturizer by dermatologists, empowers every Filipina to fully participate in life with the launch of the Free In My Skin Movement.

EMPOWERING WOMEN

The Free In My Skin Movement embodied by model, TV host and entrepreneur Patti Grandidge, seeks to bring together and honor women who overcame their insecurities and became the best version of themselves.

Patti, one of the country’s freshest and most beautiful faces, admitted that she used to be like one of every two Filipinas who suffered from dry and sensitive skin.

We used to travel a lot when I was younger and getting exposed to different climates took a toll on my skin, making it sensitive, itchy, red and dry. This made me quite insecure, and in the business I am in, it is always about first impressions,” she said.

Patti knew that if she wanted to be in control of her life and achieve her goals, she had to overcome her insecurities, starting with her skin.

Unlike ordinary moisturizers I used before, Physiogel® made my skin less sensitive and dry. My skin became so much softer, smoother and definitely healthier.”

Patti said she understands how insecurities can be restraining and wants every Filipina to be free from dry, sensitive skin and to confidently reveal their true selves. Just like she did.

It’s amazing how one simple change in my skincare has renewed my confidence,” she enthused.

One of the best feelings is when you feel confident, and have control of your life, like I can do anything! And with Physiogel®, anything.

With Physiogel®, Patti was able to free herself from skin worries such as dryness and irritation, so she can fulfill the demands of her multi-hyphenated career of being a TV host, model, entrepreneur and loving wife all with equal zest and success.

With Physiogel, I became free from dry and sensitive skin – to get going, to get out there and just be who I really am. So, now I truly believe in the power of having good skin. It gave me the power to feel empowered, to feel free. I became free in my skin. And this is why I have been rallying for this movement to reach out to so many women out there,” declares the Free in My Skin embodiment.

FREE IN MY SKIN MOVEMENT

The Free in My Skin Movement aims to empower women to fully embrace and participate in life by freeing them from dry and sensitive skin, because having dry and sensitive skin can serve as a hindrance for women to fully function to their best abilities.

This movement also aims to honor smart, strong, sensitive women who have faced their insecurities (physically and emotionally) and are now embracing and living life to the fullest.

The Free in My Skin movement is not just about creating a nurturing community of smart, strong and sensitive women, but is also as a way of honoring these women who didn’t let their dry-skin insecurities prevent them from being the best versions of themselves,” says General Manager of GSK Consumer Healthcare, Mr. Jeoffrey Yulo.

As Patti Grandidge says, “As the embodiment of this movement, I am encouraging women to join me in honoring the smart, strong and sensitive women our lives who have all been a source of inspiration. Think of three smart, strong & sensitive women you know and you are proud of and tag them on your Facebook post as how you can see mine on screen: I honor these women who have inspired me to be #FreeInMySkin: @kpams808 @macheremachere @bebettes. Cheers to these three smart, strong & sensitive women in my life! Who are yours? #NowPayItForward #PhysiogelPH.

Now all my three honorees have to do is to pay it forward by honoring three women in their lives and so forth. We want every woman in our lives to be part of this movement. I am Free In My skin to do just about And I really think this is one of the many things we can do to reach out to more women who already are and who want to be free in their skin.

Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner Play Parents to Ed Oxenbould in 'Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day'

Columbia Pictures Press Release

Walt Disney Pictures presents the new family comedy “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” inspired by the 1972 children’s classic by Judith Viorst.

The film follows the exploits of 11-year-old Alexander as he experiences the most terrible and horrible day of his young life - a day that begins with gum stuck in his hair, followed by one calamity after another. But when Alexander tells his upbeat family about the misadventures of his disastrous day, he finds little sympathy and begins to wonder if bad things only happen to him. He soon learns that he’s not alone when his mom, dad, brother and sister all find themselves living through their own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn't had one.

It’s a fun family film that’s in the vein of the John Hughes movies,” says director Miguel Arteta. “Alexander thinks his family's too busy to notice how terrible his day has been, and his wish for them to have an equally bad day so that they can understand what it's like actually comes true.

Steve Carell (“Crazy, Stupid Love”) and Jennifer Garner (“Juno”) star as Alexander’s upbeat parents. The veteran performers are joined in the film by a trio of young talent that includes 16-year-old Dylan Minnette (TV’s “Lost,” “Prisoners”) as Alexander’s older brother, Anthony; 15-year-old Kerris Dorsey (“Moneyball”) as sister Emily; and 12-year-old Australian native Ed Oxenbould, who makes his big-screen feature debut as the film’s title character, Alexander. Twins Zoey and Elise Vargas (“The Neighbors,” “True Blood”) portray baby brother Trevor.

Emmy® winner (and Golden Globe® nominee) Megan Mullally (“Will & Grace”) also joins the cast, along with Jennifer Coolidge (“American Pie,” “Legally Blonde”) and Bella Thorne (“Shake It Up!”).

The big-screen adaptation of “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” represents a collaboration of some of the greatest creative minds in family entertainment today. The film is produced by Shawn Levy (“Night at the Museum,” “Date Night,” “Real Steel”), Emmy® nominee and CEO of The Jim Henson Company Lisa Henson and 21 Laps Entertainment President Dan Levine. It’s executive produced by industry veteran Philip Steuer (“Saving Mr. Banks,” “Oz The Great and Powerful,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy) and Jason Lust.

Arteta’s key filmmaking team includes cinematographer Terry Stacey (“Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”), two-time Oscar®-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“The Blind Side”), and two artists with whom he has previously collaborated: Oscar®-nominated film editor Pamela L. Martin (“The Fighter”) and veteran costume designer Nancy Steiner (“Little Miss Sunshine”).

Opening across the Philippines on Oct. 15, 2014, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

DOH and PPS Recommend Paracetamol Calpol® to Help Fight Dengue Fever

GlaxoSmithKline, makers of doctor-recommended (Paracetamol) Calpol®, partners with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) for effective dengue fever management with “Aksyon Laban sa Dengue”.

Do you know that the most dangerous animal bite in the world is also the most common and often go unnoticed?

Caused by the deadliest insect in the world, the Aedes aegypti mosquito, dengue is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne disease in the world and is more rampant in countries with tropical climates like the Philippines.

Dengue affects more children than adults, with kids one to nine years old as the most vulnerable victims because of their predilection to mosquito bites. In some regions, dengue has reached epidemic proportions.

UNITE AGAINST DENGUE

GlaxoSmithKline, one of the world’s leading research-based pharmaceutical and healthcare companies and maker of doctor-recommended Paracetamol Calpol, joins forces with the Department of Health and the Philippine Pediatric Society in spearheading a campaign called “Aksyon Laban sa Dengue: A Dengue Fever Awareness and Education Program” as well as a Barangay Caravan that will bring dengue fever awareness efforts to the grassroots level.

The World Health Organization has recommended Paracetamol as the preferred and only recommended analgesic treatment for Dengue Fever. Aspirin or ibuprofen is not advised as these drugs may aggravate bleeding.

Calpol®, a product of GSK, contains Paracetamol specially designed to offer effective relief from the discomforts of pain and fever among children. Calpol® also has the broad suitability associated with standard paracetamol so you can be assured that it won’t harm your child when used as directed.

Dengue is a worldwide health issue. Based on WHO records, there have been 100 million dengue cases recorded and 5 percent resulted in death,” points out Department of Health Undersecretary Dr. Eric Tayag.

Last year, the DOH recorded 204,906 dengue cases resulting in 660 deaths while in 2014, there have been 24,900 cases which have resulted in 100 deaths,” Dr. Tayag added.

Dengue continues to spread due to globalization, urbanization, climate change, increasing population, pollution problems, inadequate mosquito control and lack of community support to fight this disease.

But the truth is, dengue can be prevented and stopped. The important thing is to know the facts about the disease,” said Dr. Tayag.

MANAGING DENGUE

Dengue is serious and potentially fatal. Quick and accurate detection is needed to arrest this disease.

Dengue is a clever and cunning disease,” declares Dr. Sally Gatchalian, secretary of the Philippine Pediatric Society. “It can disguise itself as other diseases. So, during the rainy season, which is when we usually see an increase of dengue cases, it is important to be on the lookout for fever that is at least of two days duration”.

Aside from fever, other signs and symptoms of dengue include headaches, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, muscle and joint aches, rashes, and bleeding manifestations. If any of these symptoms are present, the patient must seek their doctor’s advice immediately.

While there is no specific medicine to cure Dengue, we can, however, alleviate the pain felt by the child by at least managing their fever, like giving them Paracetamol Calpol which provides soothing fever relief you can rely on,” says Jeofrey Yulo, GM of GSK consumer health care. “When a child has fever, they feel weaker and lack the energy to enjoy life. So when fever strikes, it’s like they are putting their life on hold. In these times, you need a reliable partner to help provide a feeling of ginhawa that your sick child needs.

ENGAGING THE BARANGAYS

Eliminating dengue must be a community effort. One such remarkable initiative is the partnership of the DOH, the PPS and GlaxoSmithKline, maker of doctor-recommended Paracetamol Calpol which targets selected barangays within Metro Manila with identified high cases of dengue incidence.

The DOH will initially be facilitating the training of health practitioners to discuss new dengue incidence and disease trends as well as updates on its prevention and treatment guidelines. The PPS health committee will then cascade these dengue modules based on DOH guidelines with the selected barangays. On its part, GSK will be bringing doctors to these areas to lead the Dengue information campaign to help Filipinos protect their families and loved ones from this deadly menace.

You can protect your loved ones by knowing more about this debilitating disease, its prevention and management. At the onset of dengue-related symptoms immediately seek the advice of your family physician. In cases of fever, (paracetamol) Calpol® is the Filipino mom’s partner in providing effective , soothing fever relief that is suitable for children.” adds Yulo. “And because nothing works faster on fever than the Paracetamol in Calpol®, you are assured of your child going back to his normal, playful self again”.

If symptoms persist, consult your doctor. For more information about (Paracetamol) Calpol®, and its Dengue campaign, visit www.calpol.com.ph or like their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CalpolPH.

REMEMBER: Paracetamol is recommended by the World Health Organization as first-line treatment for dengue fever.

Doctor-recommended (Paracetamol) Calpol®, is a mom’s trusted and caring partner in providing effective fever relief for children and well-tolerated when used as directed.

“Aksyon Laban sa Dengue” caravan is set to visit barangays within Metro Manila identified with high cases of dengue incidence.
