Real Life Steers High-Action Story of “Planes: Fire & Rescue” Reveals on August 20

John Lasseter, executive producer of Disneytoon Studios' “Planes: Fire & Rescue,” is a spirited advocate of extensive research - not only to ensure authenticity to the story, but also to help drive it. And he’s instilled that belief in every Disneytoo filmmaker, including “Planes: Fire & Rescue” director Bobs Gannaway.

In the film, when world-famous air racer Dusty Crophopper learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting.

We took a closer look at Dusty and the background of crop dusters,” says Gannaway. “We discovered that crop dusting planes like Dusty are also used for wildfire air attack. Known as a SEAT - a Single Engine Air Tanker - it’s the smallest plane in the wildfire air attack fleet. In addition, the first operational air tanker was a repurposed crop duster, which made the first air drop on the Mendocino National Forest in 1955. Fighting fires is in Dusty’s heritage.”

Gannaway also realized that a crop duster-turned high-speed racer would likely be facing some issues. “Dusty pushed himself really hard to become a racer,” says Gannaway, “which would in real life cause extreme stress on his engine and potentially cause damage.”

The research led filmmakers to Dusty’s second-chance story. And since he’d be joining the ranks of aerial firefighting, filmmakers set out to learn as much as possible about that world from the people who live in it every day. “Bobs and his team came back changed by the people that they met,” says Lasseter. “These firefighters are true heroes.”

We were just amazed by their devotion,” says Gannaway. “They are courageous, strong, affable people who fight fires every single day - flying planes in almost-combat-like situations, or jumping from planes into tiny targets in the middle of the forest, surrounded by blazing fires. We want them to watch the movie and say, ‘Yeah, they got it right. That’s what it’s like.’ That’s why we ended up devoting the film to the firefighters, because we just fell in love with these guys.”

Adds writer Jeff Howard, “We wanted to pay tribute to the bravery of these people and the fact that they put their lives on the line for people they don’t even know.

Several members of the production team spent time at the Hemet-Ryan Air Attack Base with CalFire, gathering background for the film’s setting, characters, dialogue and story. “We had a version of the story that we bounced off them,” says Howard. “We’d ask them questions, ‘Does this sound realistic? How would you say this? What would this character do in this situation?’”

According to Howard, filmmakers noticed how relaxed the firefighters were when there wasn’t a fire to fight. “They hang back, play pranks on each other, have cookouts. They’re incredibly easygoing. But when the alarm goes off, they snap into action. They’re all business - professional, serious. That’s something we wanted to portray in the scene when Dusty arrives at Piston Peak Air Attack Base.”

CalFire battalion chief Travis Alexander not only welcomed the team - allowing them to sketch, take pictures and video, and soak up the atmosphere - he ultimately served as inspiration for one of the main characters. “He’s a giant of a man,” says Howard. “He has a dry wit and is a serious, soft-spoken, carries-a-big-stick kind of guy. He’s the one giving commands to the other planes. We put a little bit of his perfectionism into Blade’s personality.

Disney reaches a very wide audience and when dealing with real-life emergencies and issues accuracy is critical,” says Alexander. “An animated feature about the seriousness and dangers of wildland fires and those that battle them will influence and impact people of all ages. The level of commitment by everyone at Disney and their mission to get even the smallest details right became very clear to me as a professional firefighter who fights wildland fires from the ground and air. I appreciate the Disney team’s goal to accurately depict the professionalism, challenges and subtleties in our lives on the job.

Opening across the Philippines on August 20 in 3D and 2D cinemas, “Planes: Fire & Rescue” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through Columbia Pictures.

Vice Ganda Describes PBB Housemates the "Boom Panes" Way

Vice Ganda, who stayed inside the "Pinoy Big Brother" house on Friday night, is all praises for the six remaining housemates.

When asked by Big Brother to share his opinions about the housemates, the "Boom Panes" hitmaker said:
Fifth Pagotan - Boom Matatag.

"Kamakailan lang ay mayroon siyang mabigat na pinagdaanan pero ang aliwalas na ng itsura niya.
'Yun nga lang pagkakasulat niya ng 'bisexual' na napakalaki sa noo ng teddy bear, I was so proud of him, isang manipestasyon na kayang kaya niya ng isigaw sa buong mundo kung sino siya
."
Mariz Raneses - Boom Napakaganda.

"Gandang ganda talaga ako sa kanya. Tinitigan ko siya kahapon the whole time na nagsasalita siya, maganda siya. 'Di lang dahil maganda ang physical niyang kaanyuan kung hindi ang gaan niyang tao, napaka-pleasant niya at napakarami niyang talento."

Loisa Andalio - Boom Natural.

"'Yung kinikilos niya ay hindi lang dinidikta ng isip niya kung hindi 'yun din ang dinidikta ng puso niya. 'Yun siya, nakakatuwa, napaka-genuine."

Daniel Matsunaga - Malawak.

"Sa edad niya at sa daming lugar na napuntahan niya at trabahong nagawa niya, ang lawak na ng pagkatao niya. Kaya hindi na ganoon kahirap sa kanya na makisama sa mga taong di niya kakilala."

Jane Oineza - Boom Maipagmamalaki.

"Maipagmamalaki ko si Jane kung ako ang kanyang magulang. Hindi ganoon kadali para tumanggap ka ng hamon na ikaw ang bumubuhay sa pamilya mo lalo't lalo pa kung napakabata mo pa. Hindi pa nga siya nagde-debut, wala pa nga siyang 18."

Manolo Pedrosa - Boom Matinong Baka.

"Mukha talaga siyang matinong bata - 'yung buka ng bibig niya, 'yung kilos niya, 'yung pananaw niya sa buhay, alam mong ang tino ng pagpapalaki ng magulang. Maayos na naibigay ng magulang niya 'yung leksyon na dapat niyang matutunan sa mura niyang edad."

Vickie Rushton - Boom Tuliro.
"Naisip ko nga na mayroon siyang iniisip ngayon, may gumugulo may bumabagabag sa kanya at nagiging dahilan yon kung bakit di siya nag-e-enjoy lately."

Joshua Garcia - Boom Tamad.

Aljur Abrenica Files for Cancellation of His GMA Network Contract

Aljur Abrenica is making the big move!

The 24-year-old Kapuso actor who broke into showbiz after being named one of the winners of the fourth season of Kapuso reality show StarStruck in 2006 filed a complaint for Judicial Confirmation of Rescission of Contract against GMA Network, Inc., according to a report by GMA News showbiz correspondent Nelson Canlas.

He decided to file the petition because he feels his career plans are not "aligned" with plans of the network for him.

"Hindi ako nakikipag-away. Tumatanaw ako ng utang na loob. Ayoko sana umabot sa ganito," Aljur said.

According to the formal complaint signed by his legal counsel Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, Aljur is an "exclusive talent" of GMA-7 until March 2015. His contract is renewable for another three years, upon the network's exclusive option, according to the complaint.

Aljur is demanding P1 million in moral damages over his "besmirched reputation, sleepless night and serious anxiety," after the network allegedly required him to work for long hours despite feeling ill, and therefore, affecting his performance as an actor.

The complaint is also calling for P100,000 in exemplary damages, and an additional P800,000 in attorneys' and other legal fees.

In response to Aljur's petition filed on Thursday at Quezon City Hall of Justice, the network released a short statement:

GMA Network has not yet received a copy of the complaint filed by Mr. Aljur Abrenica. A statement will be issued when we have received and reviewed the contents of the complaint."

So what's next for GMA-7's Machete? Is he moving to ABS-CBN?

Realistic FX Brings Viewers Inside Tornadoes in “Into the Storm”

Towering over and around the human characters of New Line Cinema's tornado disaster film “Into the Storm” is its intimidating main character - the storm itself. “I think it’ll be exciting for the audience to go inside this massive tornado with its horrific power of destruction and, at the same time, see its beauty,” director Steven Quale says. “With advances in sound and visual effects, it’s now possible to do that in an incredibly visceral and realistic way.

Quale’s a firm believer in the notion that “sound is 50% of the moviegoing experience” and enlisted Oscar®-winning sound editor Per Hallberg (“Skyfall”) to give the storms their concussive power. The visuals were hatched on hundreds of computers spread across among leading visual effects houses, all working from high def video references and a detailed previsualization (“previs”) Quale put together with VFX producer Randall Starr.

Effects have come a long way since the 1996 tornado thriller “Twister,” and Quale has been on the frontlines of their evolution, so he knew going in that the realism and detail he wanted for this film was achievable. “In our film, you’ll see four different, unique tornadoes, and the tension escalates until you see this giant, two-mile-wide tornado coming straight at you like some massive, unstoppable beast,” Quale describes. “These are probably some of the most difficult visual effects to accomplish because this is not a science fiction movie where you can create your own universe to have a unique particle effect and special rays that cause destruction. Everybody knows what clouds and trees blowing in the wind look like. So we had to create these tornadoes and these digital cloud formations with total realism on every level, but also make sure that everything we shot in live action would match those dark, stormy skies exactly.”

Hence the darkened silk screens, wind machines and rain towers that have been a constant on set. “You just have to keep track of what the storm is doing at that moment in the film,” Quale adds, “and constantly remind everybody that there is a big tornado in the background.”

Green screens are no problem for “The Hobbit” movie veteran Richard Armitage who plays the lead role. “Oh, I’m very used to that,” he laughs. “And Steven has a very strong image of what kind of a monster this storm will be and how the characters are scaled against it.

Even though the storm is the film’s main event, Quale sees the characters as its heart. “We can use sound and visual effects to put you inside the storm, but what really brings you into the experience is the characters themselves,” he reflects. “We’re taking this journey with them, and experiencing this terrifying event through their eyes. So for us, true realism comes down to the performances, and Richard, Sarah Wayne Callies and all the actors are bringing so much real emotion to the film, which will make the experience of this giant, terrifying storm all the more visceral and real.”

From New Line Cinema, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, comes the tornado disaster film “Into the Storm.” Steven Quale (“Final Destination 5”) directs the film, which is produced by Todd Garner (“Knight and Day”).

In the span of a single day, the small American town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot.

Told through the eyes and lenses of professional storm chasers, thrill-seeking amateurs, and courageous townspeople, “Into the Storm” throws you directly into the eye of the storm to experience Mother Nature at her most extreme.

Opening across the Philippines in August 07, 2014, “Into the Storm” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Classic Video Game Characters Join Force in "Pixels" Movie

Sony Pictures Entertainment announced today that the studio has brought together an extraordinary number of iconic video game companies, whose classic characters – including PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Centipede®, Galaga, Frogger, Q*bert, and Space Invaders – will be featured in the highly-anticipated action comedy “Pixels,” starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad, and Brian Cox, and directed by Chris Columbus. The film will be released on May 15, 2015.

In “Pixels,” when intergalactic aliens misinterpret video-feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them, they attack the Earth, using the games as models for their various assaults. President Will Cooper (James) has to call on his childhood best friend, ’80s video game champion Sam Brenner (Sandler), now a home theater installer, to lead a team of old-school arcaders (Dinklage and Gad) to defeat the aliens and save the planet. Monaghan plays the team's unique weapons specialist.

The action-comedy is directed by Chris Columbus from a story by Tim Herlihy and a screenplay by Tim Herlihy and Timothy Dowling, based on the original short film of the same name by Patrick Jean. The film is produced by Adam Sandler, Chris Columbus, Mark Radcliffe, and Allen Covert. Executive Producers are Barry Bernardi, Michael Barnathan, Jack Giarraputo, Heather Parry, Tim Herlihy, Steve Koren, Patrick Jean, Benjamin Darras, Johnny Alves, Matias Boucard, Seth Gordon, and Ben Waisbren. The film, a Columbia Pictures presentation in association with LStar Capital, is a Happy Madison / 1492 Films production in association with One More Production.

Companies with classic arcade games that are teaming with Sony Pictures on the film include:

Atari® Interactive: (Asteroids®, Breakout®, Centipede® and Missile Command®)

Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. (Frogger)

BANDAI NAMCO Games Inc. (PAC-MAN, Galaga, and Dig Dug)

Nintendo (Donkey Kong)

Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc. (Q*bert)

Taito Corporation (Space Invaders)

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (Joust, Defender, Robotron and Wizard of Wor)

Commenting on the announcement, the film’s director, Chris Columbus, said, “There would be no way to make the movie without these legendary characters – they are as important to the film as the roles that Adam, Kevin, Michelle, Peter, Josh, and Brian are playing. It was a real thrill to see everything come together exactly as we envisioned it, and we’re grateful to have all of these fantastic companies on board.”

Producer Allen Covert added, “These classic characters are part of the DNA of the project, so it was critical that we work together to bring them on board. Fortunately, they were all extremely receptive. We approached them with a deep love for their characters and a respect for the elements that make them unique and iconic, and we’ve worked with the companies to incorporate those elements into the film.

Magician David Blaine Arrives in Manila for “Real or Magic” 1-Night-Only Live Show

Manila, Philippines - Is he for real? Or is he a con job? Filipinos can decide for themselves when the world’s most intriguing magician hits Manila for a one-night-only live show.

Magician David Blaine, who has been wowing and spooking audiences worldwide with his trailblazing brand of magic for almost two decades, is set to cast a spell on Philippine audiences in a 90-minute live show on September 12 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

This is not an entirely new venture into the world of magic by Ovation Productions, having promoted another very popular magician also by the name of David in Manila in 1989, David Copperfield!

Dubbed “Real or Magic,” Blaine’s first ever show in the Philippines will feature a slew of tricks that have blown the minds of anyone who has ever seen videos of his ‘street magic’ performances. The 41-year-old magician’s Manila stopover is part of his first Asian tour.

The show’s title references Blaine's TV special last year in which he performed inexplicable tricks to the stupefaction of celebrities such as Will Smith, Kanye West, Ricky Gervais, Katy Perry, and a very freaked-out Harrison Ford - who jokingly told Blaine to "Get the f*** out of my house."

Born in New York to Puerto Rican- Italian and Russian parents, Blaine became an overnight success at 24 when he debuted his “Street Magic” in 1997. The show, in which he performed minimal yet enigmatic tricks for impromptu audiences on the street, was a success.

Eschewing the glitzy Vegas-style showmanship of magicians like David Copperfield, Blaine’s less-is-more approach, lazy Brooklyn drawl and ultra-cool manner — not to mention his dark, brooding looks - won him a great league of fans across the world who just can’t seem to believe what they see.

Later, Blaine expanded his magical repertoire by featuring himself in a series of spectacularly staged death-defying endurance performances, some of which were inspired by his idol Harry Houdini. These endurance performances have seen Blaine: sealed in a coffin-like box at the bottom of a three-ton tank of water for a week; encased in ice for 63 hours; standing unsecured on top of a 30m high narrow pillar for 53 hours; and dangled in a plastic cube above the Thames for 44 days with only water to sustain him. He even managed to break a Guinness World Record in 2008 live on The Oprah Winfrey Show when he held his breath underwater for 17 minutes and 44 seconds - the record has since been broken. Meanwhile, the last spectacle saw him being zapped by a million volts of electricity produced by eight Tesla coil towers for 72 hours.

While the magician who’s been called our generation’s greatest probably won’t replicate such endurance tests for his live show, audiences can be assured that they’ll be feted to other head-scratching Blaine specialties - from how-did-he-do-that card tricks to pushing needles through his arm to twisting off a chicken's head and putting it back on. But is it magic? Is it real? You decide.

David Blaine 'Real or Magic' LIVE in Manila, September 12, 2014 at the Araneta Coliseum is presented by Ovation Productions in cooperation with AXN, Philippine Star, Manila Bulletin, BusinessWorld, Philstar.com, Inquirer.net, Manila Concert Scene, Philippine Concerts, Wheninmanila, Rappler.com, SoundcheckManila, MYX, ABS CBN, Crossover105.1, 96.3EasyRock, Retro 105.9, Monster Radio 96.3, and Mellow 947.

Ticket prices are P6,500, P5,500, P4,500, P3,500, P2,000, P1,000. Available at Ticketnet outlets or online www.ticketnet.com.ph or call 911-5555.
