Goodbye E.T., Cute Alien Named Echo Arrives on Earth

An inspiring science-fiction adventure, Earth to Echo captures all the mystery, excitement and wonder of an extraterrestrial occurrence in a small Nevada suburb.

But at its heart, the movie is about friendship. Our three young heroes – Tuck, Munch and Alex – are a closely bonded trio of outcasts, whose time together is coming to an end. Their neighborhood is being destroyed by a highway construction project; forcing their families to move away. Only the promise of one last thrill together – a journey into the desert to search for the source of strange and mysterious messages that have appeared on their cell phones - can distract them from their impending move. “The movie is really about this group of kids and how they have to say goodbye to each other,” says director Dave Green. “There’s something bittersweet about the fact they’re spending their last night together. But is goodbye really goodbye? In our movie, it’s not. It’s a beginning.

Earth to Echo all began with the seed of an idea from producer Andrew Panay. Panay wanted to recapture the spirit of seminal family movies from the 1980s that he loved as a child – E.T., The Goonies, Stand By Me – movies that managed to conjure the wonder and heartbreak of early adolescence and infuse it with an intoxicating sense of adventure. If the story of E.T. were to happen today, he asked himself, how would it be told?

With video recording technology becoming increasingly accessible to all ages, especially kids, the movie’s concept seemed to fit perfectly into today’s world. “Kids today are doing a lot of their own filming and they’re videotaping and Vine-ing. There are all these different social media outlets and ways of communicating which comes down to turning the camera around and shooting yourself and sending it off. It just makes sense,” says Panay. Today, kids want to share their experiences with people. Fortunately enough, this group of friends brings viewers into their story with the click of the “Record” button. With its roots in the found footage genre, Earth to Echo is the next step in storytelling.

Instead of approaching seasoned feature directors to help develop the project, Panay decided to go in another direction. The heart of the movie lies in the way the characters piece together the story themselves using their own cameras, editing, and insight. This was exactly what Panay wanted from a director. “I wanted to find a young filmmaker from the generation that sits and edits their films themselves,” says Panay.

He found what he was looking for in Dave Green, an enterprising filmmaker with a unique vision and strong résumé. Aside from having been a producer’s assistant on the set of the Spiderman trilogy, films acclaimed for their stunning visual effects, Dave also had a series of polished short films and music videos under his belt. When Panay watched one of Green’s shorts, he was immediately convinced. “It was practically a trailer for Earth to Echo,” he says. “After seeing that, I had no doubts at all.

Green met with Panay to discuss his idea and the two immediately hit it off, saying that “[Panay]’s idea just sparked my excitement.”

According to Green, Panay’s idea was already in the family of concepts Green had been discussing with his writing partner, Henry Gayden; but Gayden wasn’t convinced. “At first, I didn’t know what to do,” Gayden admits. “It was too broad a container. But then I got this idea and started writing and by two in the morning, I had a rough story.” Gayden called up Green the next morning and said he had landed on something interesting.

As the next step, Green shot a one-minute clip to help sell the fun, the mystery, and the suspense of what Earth to Echo would ultimately become. When Panay saw it, he was immediately convinced. “It was practically a trailer for Earth to Echo,” he says. “After seeing that, I had no doubts at all.

From the beginning, Green wanted to approach things differently with Earth to Echo. In this case, the material isn’t simply raw footage, it’s a finished video created by Tuck (played by Brian ‘Astro’ Bradley), an avid, DIY filmmaker who regularly posts his videos on YouTube. “We wanted to lean into the idea that Tuck not only shot the whole thing, he’s also cut the whole thing, and he’s put music to it when he feels like it’s necessary, and he’s put titles in there, and he can pause the movie, and he can interject,” says Green.

If an extraterrestrial occurrence actually happened today, almost anyone would be able to capture it with the amount of video recording technology at people’s fingertips. Green also found a compelling advantage to creating a story that hewed solely to his main characters’ point of view, an attribute of many of his favorite movies from the likes of Spielberg and Hitchcock. “You build suspense out of what the characters don’t see and don’t know,” he explains. “And that’s the most exciting part. It’s fun to parse out information, just one seed at a time.”

Released and distributed by Captive Cinema, “Earth to Echo” opens in theaters nationwide on July 9, 2014.

Confirmed: Angel Locsin is "Darna" in the Big-Budgeted Movie Version

Angel Locsin, who first played the Mars Ravelo-created Pinay super heroine "Darna" in the first TV version in 2005, confirmed on Thursday that she will reprise the coveted role in a movie version to be produced by Star Cinema.

The 29-year-old Kapamilya award-winning actress described the movie version as a first in Philippine cinema in terms of scale. She is confident that the film will elevate standards in local filmmaking, saying it is something Filipinos can be proud of on the global stage.

"Naku, you have no idea kung gaano kalaki! Kasi kahit ako, nagulat, eh. As in, never ako naka-experience ng ganito kalaking project, o nakarinig man lang. First time ito. First time ito sa buong history ng Pilipinas," she said.

"Ang tapang! Ang tapang ng Star Cinema para gawin itong project na 'to. And ako, bilang napili nilang artista dito, sobrang speechless talaga ako! Overwhelmed ako kung gaano kalaking proyekto, gaano kaganda, at kung gaano kagagaling 'yung mga tao na kinuha nila behind ng camera. Ang makakatrabaho ko dito, best of the best ng industriya talaga." the actress further said.

Citing the scale of the project, Angel said she already considers it the highlight of her career. She even said, in jest, that she would have no regrets if it happens to be her last film.

"Kasi dati sinasabi nila, pag fantasy movie, parang medyo nahihirapan tayo dahil sa budget at saka sa effects. Pero dito ngayon, all in talaga. Ibibigay namin sa inyo ang lahat.

"Wala, wala na akong mahihiling pagkatapos nito. Parang ano kasi...nalulula kasi talaga ako. Sobrang laki niya. Ang laki niya talaga. Right now, sobrang kontento na ako sa nangyayari at sobra-sobra pa nga ang nangyayari," she said.

The actress also revealed that award-winning director Erik Matti will direct the movie.

Celebrity housemate Jane Oineza saved herself from the threat of eviction this week in “Pinoy Big Brother All In” after winning in the recent “Instasave” challenge. It proved to be an emotional victory for her as she did it alone without the help of any housemate.

Daniel, Fifth, Loisa, Joshua, and Nichole remain to be on the list of nominees for eviction this week.

Before the said challenge, Jane shed tears when nobody chose to pair up with her, as non-nominated housemates Manolo, Fourth, Cheridel, Maris, and Vickie picked Nichole, Fifth, Loisa, Daniel, and Joshua, respectively, as their partners.

Jane had an eventful week as she also generated online buzz when she faced friend Kathryn Bernardo during the latter’s visit at the PBB house. Jane apologized to Kathryn for saying “no comment” when asked by other housemates about the Teen Queen’s alleged plastic surgery.

Meanwhile, “elevator nanay” Cheridel’s life is also about to change this week because of a special challenge by Big Brother this weekend that will affect her “PBB” stint. What could it be?

I will never forget how ‘Mirabella’ changed my life because this is the biggest blessing that I have received this year,” said Julia who admitted that she has become attached to her characters in the show, Mira and Bella.

Aside from Enrique and the whole cast, I will really miss portraying my two roles because their journey taught me how to be strong and stay positive amidst all the trials that I’m facing,” she said.

Rescue5 Conducts Disaster Preparedness Activities for Bohol Earthquake Victims; Distributes Sinugbuanong Bisaya Edition Book

Dipatlong Primary School in Maribojoc, Bohol was heavily damaged by the 7.2-magnitude earthquake that hit the province last October 15, 2013. Its walls bear huge cracks, its ceiling almost collapsing, and its fence reduced to rubble. In fact, the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) gave the school a red code, declaring it unsafe to hold classes.

Furthermore, situated in the coastal town of Maribojoc, the school is also prone to storm surge. Despite this, almost 90 schoolchildren trooped back to Dipatlong Primary School during the school opening.

To help schoolchildren of Dipatlong Primary School and nine more public elementary schools in Maribojoc prepare for earthquakes, storm surges and other disasters, Rescue5, the Emergency Response Unit of TV5 News and Information (News5), gave them copies of its specialized activity book on disaster preparedness in Sinugbuanong Binisaya, the mother tongue in Bohol.

The activity book’s distribution was part of Rescue 5’s “Oplan Handa sa Eskwela 2014” project.  The team also handed out 72-hour survival kits (backpacks containing emergency devices and school supplies) to 600 kids.

We developed the Rescue5 activity book and had it translated to various native languages, so that children in different parts of the country can better understand how they can protect themselves during disasters,” TV5 Public Service Sherryl Yao (right) said.

The schoolchildren excitedly answered their activity books, while News5 anchor Paolo Bediones guided them.  He also conducted a disaster preparedness demo that includes making an improvised floatation device, and doing the “drop, cover and hold on” during an earthquake.

The Rescue5 activity book has passed the review of the DepEd.  It contains games, puzzles, pictures to color and other fun activities in order to teach kids what to do in case of disasters.  It also explains what a storm surge is.

The activity book’s Waray edition was given out to kids affected by super typhoon Yolanda in Tacloban City, Leyte, while its Tagalog edition was distributed to kids affected by the Habagat flooding in Mega Manila last year.

“Oplan Handa sa Eskwela 2014” project partners are DepEd, JCI Bohol Chocolate Hills, International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines, Pru Life UK, Sparkles and Sterling Paper Products, Inc.
