Brian Tee and Kang Hye Jung to Tie the Knot in "Wedding Palace"

Brian Tee and Kang Hye Jung to Tie the Knot in "Wedding Palace"

Brian Tee is an American actor of Japanese and Korean descent who is best known for his role as the Drift King in “Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift.”

Since then he has been in a variety of roles in film and television. One of his most recent roles was the lead character, Jason, in the Korean/American film “Wedding Palace,” co-starring Kang Hye Jung. “Mortal Kombat: Legacy Season 2,” and play the antagonist Noburo Mori in Hollywood blockbuster “The Wolverine,” starring Hugh Jackman.

You have a fun role as Jason in “Wedding Palace.” I’m sure a lot of people can relate to the meddling relatives he has.

That’s kind of what we were shooting for. We tried to make a comedy that’s universal with laughter and transcends culture. If we succeeded, we’ve done our jobs.

Were your parents helicopter parents like Jason’s?

I’ve had friends with that dynamic of having the overbearing parents telling them they need to get married and even having arranged marriages. Fortunately, I grew up with a very liberal mom. She was a broadcaster and so she let me do my own thing. But I could relate to the cast of characters and the zaniness having grown up in Koreatown (in Los Angeles) with my friends.

How did this project come to you? Is comedy something you’ve always wanted to do?

Yeah. Comedy is probably closer to my personality than other roles I’ve played. Christine (Yoo, the director) sent me the script in late 2007. It was one of those scripts where you laugh out loud. It’s rare for a script to make me literally laugh out loud but it did. That was the launching pad where I knew I wanted to do it, and even produce it. It was a long journey, but it was one I wanted to take because no one’s really seen me as a character like this. I feel much more like a character actor where I can go from brute/heavy to comedy, and hopefully fans will appreciate it as well.

You sing and play electric guitar in this. Can you actually sing and play?

(He laughs.) I was working on the TV series “Crash” in Albuquerque (N.M.) and— nothing against Albuquerque, but there’s not much to do — so on my days off I took guitar lessons, knowing there was a scene in “Wedding Palace,” where I would have to play guitar. I wouldn’t consider myself a professional, by any means, but if you told me which chords to strum, I could do it. Hopefully, that played well in the scene. It was one of my favorite sequences, actually.

What was it like working with Korean actress Kang Hye-jung?

It was a lot of fun. She’s a lively spirit and a giving actress. English not being her first language, she was in it to win it. She worked really hard, and it comes across on screen.

You guys had to use some trick photography to capture the comedy of surprise, right?

The trick shots we just had fun with. I think we pulled it off. She was a gem to work with and I’d love to work with her again someday.

Jason finds out something he didn't know about his dream girl once she arrives in America. What was your criterion for a girlfriend or mate?

No matter what physicality my wife would have had, love is love and I would still be in love with her and would still want to marry her no matter what. Jason has that same feeling, but he just has to get through that initial shock to find out.

Congratulations on your wedding. You and Mirelly are both are actors, so did you have a chance to go on a honeymoon?

We both have been busy working. Even in the next couple of weeks, I’m flying out for work and next month, she’s flying out for work. It’s a busy time for us. It’s great to be busy. We’re itching for that moment in time where we can sit back and relax and enjoy what we set off to do and enjoy the rest of our lives and celebrate that moment. Hopefully, we’ll be able to find gaps in our work that will allow us to do that.

There are some specific Korean-American traditions depicted in “Wedding Palace,” particularly the ceremony where the year-old boy chooses his career path by selecting one of several objects set before him. Did you go through that ceremony when you were a child?

Absolutely. That’s a Korean touchstone. It’s interesting that we’re talking today, which is Korean Thanksgiving. My mom’s side of the family got together and we had lunch. Tradition is huge in the culture and very important to the family and myself. Those gems you see visually in the movie and the elaborate wedding that they pull off are typical. When we were actually shooting the wedding scenes, we weren’t trying to be farcical about it. That is how they go. Some are even more elaborate. It was one of those crazy adventures of a Korean movie that shows the cultural side that not a lot of Westerners and other cultures are familiar with. We wanted to show what traditions Koreans have and what Korean-Americans share.

Do you plan to do more martial arts movies? You didn’t die in “Wolverine,” so is it possible you could be back?

I don’t consider myself a martial artist. I consider myself an actor first. I don’t do my own stunts. I regard myself as a lover, not a fighter. I work from the inside out. I feel the physicality is all a part of it. That said, I am a physical guy. I grew up playing sports: football, basketball, you name it. I like the physicality of things and I put a lot of work into the physicality of certain characters, especially with the career path that I’ve taken: a lot of action movies, and a lot of roles that ask for physicality. So with my martial arts background, it’s really more self-defense — very small, very get out of the way, let’s end the fight as quick as possible, whereas in film fighting, it’s completely different. It’s broad strokes. It’s playing for the camera. The beauty of martial arts is the elegance and grace of it all. In movies, I’m more of a bull charging somebody (on camera). What’s interesting, the martial arts that I’m asked to do on certain action films that I’m cast in I literally have to transform my martial arts style and even my physicality. That excites me.

What can you tell me about your role in “Mortal Kombat: Legacy?”

Liu Kang is somewhat of the face of it. There are a lot of big shoes to fill as far as the physicality and martial arts and me not being that expert as a martial artist, there was a lot of work involved. So I do enjoy martial arts and action movies, and when the role comes across, I will work as hard as I can and do everything I can. But at the end of the day, I’m going to let the stunt guys do what they do best and let myself do the acting, which is what I do best and create whatever we can, action-wise, to make it as memorable and impactful as possible.

You were D.K. (a.k.a. the Drift King) in “Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.” Are you going to be in “Fast 7?”

Right now, the answer is no. Would I want to be? Absolutely. If I could reprise that role, it would be great. He’s one of my favorite roles and to be a part of that franchise is a blessing. Hopefully, (“Fast 7” director) James Wan will have room for me. There are a lot of actors coming on board and I’d love to be one of them, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Released and distributed by Captive Cinema, “Wedding Palace” is showing in theaters nationwide on March 12.

De La Salle Lady Spikers Wins UAAP Season 76 Women's Volleyball Finals, Says Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago

De La Salle Lady Spikers Wins UAAP Season 76 Women's Volleyball Finals, Says Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago

Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, during the 1st Business Law Conference at De La Salle University on Friday where she was expected to deliver a speech on the cybercrime law, once again threw her trademark pick-up lines.

First, she made a joke out of the school's reputation as an elite university and jested about a possible scenario where someone "sosyal" is staging a hold-up.
Paano mang-hold up ang mga sosyal? Sinasabi, 'Hold up here. Make bigay all your thingies. Don't make galaw or I'll make tusok-tusok you."

She also delivered a joke about business terms to connect with the theme of the conference.

The lady Senator also has a message for those who love to take “selfie”  but are aesthetically challenged.

But the statement that received the most applaud was her prediction of university's women's volleyball team taking home the  UAAP Season 76 Women's Volleyball Finals against its archrival Ateneo.
I have acquired powers of prognostication, to prophesy. For example, I can sense that tomorrow there will be an important athletic event. "I can see color... I can see the color green."

Jose Manalo on Daughter's Suicide Attempt: "So sad that my effort is not being appreciated.

Jose Manalo on Daughter's Suicide Attempt: "So sad that my effort is not being appreciated."

Jose Manalo, in a statement sent to ABS-CBN News on Friday,  said he is deeply saddened by the recent reports that one of his daughters attempted to take her own life on Wednesday, allegedly because of his refusal to send her to her choice of school (read related news HERE).

The "Eat Bulaga!" co-host maintained that he has been been providing, and will continue to provide his children such support to the best of his ability. As a matter of fact, part of the comedian's salary on the show, upon his request, is automatically remitted to the respective schools of his children with his estranged wife, Anna Lyn.

"Contrary to the baseless allegations being made against him, Jose has been diligently observing and following the orders of the Court as regards the support requested by Anna Lyn and their children.

"It is rather regrettable that the recent events resulted to machinations which portray Jose in a character contrary to what he truly is. It is likewise saddening that Jose’s efforts to provide support within his means, are not being appreciated, and at times, being exploited, by demands which are far beyond Jose’s financial capacity," part of his statement stated.

Furthermore, Jose emphasized that the obligation to support the family is not only incumbent upon him as the father of his children, but on Anna Lyn, as well, and that they should, together, resolve the issues and arrive at an agreement which would be to the best interests of their children.

He also expressed sadness that Anna Lyn has resorted to such measures and allowed this to happen, and even made public statements as regards the condition of their children.

In the end, the comedian urged his ex-wife to be logical and reasonable, and refrain from making further acts that would undoubtedly prejudice the well-being, self-worth and dignity of their children.

Jose Manalo's Daughter Commits Suicide

Jose Manalo's Daughter Commits Suicide

Source: ABS-CBNNews.com

The 17-year-old daughter of comedian Jose Manalo was hospitalized after allegedly trying to commit suicide inside their condominium unit in Greenhills, San Juan at around 10PM on Wednesday.

Atty. Dennis Pangan, the legal counsel of Manalo's, said his client took different kinds of medicines and was found unconscious by her mother inside their house.

He added that the girl left a suicide note, wherein she allegedly expressed her dismay at Manalo for abandoning her, her mother, and siblings.

She also mentioned how her father failed to fulfill his promise to pay her tuition fee in the letter, according to Pangan.

The girl also expressed disappointment over Manalo's alleged lack of support for her younger sibling, who always cries when looking for their father, Pangan added.

"Parang hindi ho sila tinuturing na anak ng kanilang tatay," Pangan said.

The girl, who is suffering from depression, is now conscious and is recuperating at the Medical City in Mandaluyong.

In 2012, Manalo had a legal tiff with his wife, Anna Lyn, who accused him of not fulfilling his financial responsibilities to their children following their separation over the comedian's alleged extra-marital affair.

Anna Lyn, at the time, alleged she started to experience verbal abuse from Manalo in the second half of 2011, amid rumors that the TV host was having a "sexual relationship" with a member of popular dance group. She claimed that Manalo's alleged tirades were committed even in the presence of their children.

At the height of the controversy in March 2012, Manalo denied neglecting his children, saying he continued to provide for them.

In an interview in December of the same year, Manalo said he no longer has communication with Anna Lyn, but stressed that he has been giving financial support to his children.

Enrique Gil Blinded by Love for Julia Barretto in ‘Mira Bella’

Kapamilya stars Julia Barretto and Enrique Gil are set to capture the hearts of primetime TV viewers as they team up for the first time in ABS-CBN’s upcoming fantasy series “Mira Bella,” which premieres this March.

All artists, especially newcomers like me, dream to have our own teleserye. And with this opportunity given to me by ABS-CBN, I promise to do my best for our show,” said Julia.

Like Julia, Enrique admitted that he is also excited for the premiere of “Mira Bella.”

This is my first ever fantaserye and I can’t wait to share it with the viewers. It’s a new experience that has taught me new things and has given me the chance to work with other great actors for the first time. It is very refreshing,” he said.

Meanwhile, Julia and Enrique shared that they believe that the primetime audience will enjoy the narrative of their program. “’Mira Bella’ is perfect for the whole family this upcoming summer season. It is a story about family, love, and acceptance. TV viewers, especially the younger generation, will surely learn a lot from our story,” Julia shared.

Julia will portray the character of a young girl cursed to have a wood-like skin named Mira, who is secretly admired by her blind best friend Jeremy, who will be played by Enrique.

TV5 Airs "Pinoy Explorer" Finale Episode on March 15

In the finale of TV5’s PINOY EXPLORER, Aga Muhlach picks up from where the historic Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics recently left off and heads to Russia to feature the one-of-a-kind winter activities only the Russians are known to do.

First of which is an activity that seems very impossible to pull off and even more dangerous to do—car racing on snow! The Pinoy Explorer team will showcase how the Russians have transformed this seemingly unimaginable winter activity into a legitimate and even celebrated countrywide sporting competition!

Pinoy Explorer will also feature a sport that could be considered as the counterpart of a leisure activity popularly known as kiteboarding—but the Russians have put their own unique twist to it! Fondly called “snowkiting”, this time, riders glide and run on the surface of snow as they are pulled by a giant kite!

In addition, the Russians have also created a new and yet another unusual activity to keep them busy during the winter season, which they call “gorodski”. If the name alone is enough to raise some eyebrows, then you should actually tune in to this special episode to see not only where the strange name came from, but also what this activity is all about!

And as an added final treat to all the Pinoy Explorer fans who have religiously tuned in to the show every Saturday night for the last 3 years, Aga will also be featuring some of his most personal and memorable moments while taping the show—unforgettable people, activities and places, which have truly left a mark in his life, in more ways than one.

Don’t forget to tune in to the final episode of PINOY EXPLORER, which airs this Saturday, March 15 at 6:45pm, only on TV5!

Kantar Media Philippine TV Ratings: Ikaw Lamang vs. Carmela, Kambal Sirena vs. Honesto

ABS-CBN's new period drama "Ikaw Lamang" debuted strongly on Monday, according to Kantar Media, making it the No. 1 show in its time slot.

The pilot episode of "Ikaw Lamang" garnered a nationwide rating 27.4%, as measured by Kantar Media using a panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes.

This strong viewership ranked the Coco Martin-starrer third overall in the list of most watched programs on March 10, just below fellow Primetime Bida offerings "Honesto" and "TV Patrol," which registered national TV ratings of 32.4% and 27.7%, respectively.

The audience share of "Ikaw Lamang" on Monday was 10 percentage-points ahead of its competing program aired on GMA-7, "Carmela," which only registered 16.1%.

"Ikaw Lamang" depicts a love story that blooms in a sugarcane plantation located in Central Visayas.

The story begins in 1964 when an impoverished family decides to look for work in Salvacion to serve as sakadas (sugarcane harvesters) in the hacienda owned by the alkalde Eduardo (Tirso Cruz III).

Samuel (Zaijan Jaranilla) develops a crush on Isabelle (Alyanna Angeles) when he sees her for the first time inside her family's car.

However, their friendship is tested over time because they come from different social classes. Samuel hails from a family of plantation workers while Isabelle is the only daughter of hacienderos.

Franco (Louise Abuel), the son of the alkalde, makes a deal with Samuel: he would teach Samuel how to read and write if he teaches him how to raise sugarcane.

Eventually, Samuel introduces his childhood friend Mona (Xyriel Manabat) to Franco while the latter brings Isabelle (Alyanna).

The children meet secretly in an abandoned mansion since they are forbidden by their parents to interact with each other.

Coco Martin, Kim Chiu, Jake Cuenca, and Julia Montes will portray the grownup versions of Samuel, Isabelle, Franco, and Mona, respectively.

Ikaw Lamang is directed by Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco.

In GMA-7's original sirenaserye "Kambal Sirena," viewers get to know the love story between a human and a merman.

Marissa (Mickey Ferriols) is about to get married to Enrique (Ryan Eigenmann) but she is having doubts about him since he has a tendency to maltreat her.

On their wedding day, Marissa runs away by riding a speedboat but she gets into an accident in the middle of the ocean.

A merman named Damos (Yul Servo) saves her and heals her wounds by using seaweed.

In order to be with his beloved, Damos decides to break the laws of Serenadia by getting a magical bracelet that will give him human legs.

Marissa is about to leave Enrique but he assaults her when he catches her trying to run away from him again. Damos shows up and beats Enrique when they fight in a pool.

The two lovers escape and live simply in a hut located near the sea.

After some time, Marissa finds out that she is pregnant. Their bliss is shattered when Enrique suddenly appears and threatens to kill them with his gun. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as it shows that Enrique pulled the trigger but it was not indicated who got shot in the end.

Kambal Sirena is directed by Dondon Santos.

Film Adaptation of Classic, Cult-Hit Anime "Kite" Hits Philippine Theaters Soon

Film Adaptation of Classic, Cult-Hit Anime "Kite" Hits Philippine Theaters Soon

Based on the acclaimed anime film creator Yasuomi Umetsu, "Kite" stars legendary Academy Award Nominated Samuel L. Jackson.

Set in the wake of the global financial crisis, one that has rendered the government an ineffective corrupt puppet state, the real power now lies in a massive organized crime ring, one that maintains absolute control through intimidation, bribery and murder. Fuelling the new global economy is an extensive international prostitution ring, where the majority of young women are sold into sexual slavery and leaving most citizens too terrified to resist.

Taking a stand against this is Sawa (India Eisley), a young woman who, after the murder of her parents by Mafia hitmen, has sworn revenge on those who left her orphaned. Guiding her in this mission is Aker (Jackson), an aging police detective who raised Sawa and trained her to be a ruthless assassin, all while providing her with “Amp,” a powerful narcotic that allows her to forget the traumatic memory of her parent’s death. But, the closer she gets to the head of the crime syndicate, an elusive man known as The Emir, the more careless she becomes-leaving a trail of evidence and witnesses in her wake…making it harder for Aker to conceal her identity from his corrupt peers. Despite this recklessness, she excels at her mission until she teams up with a fellow vigilante, a mysterious man with a connection to her parents, who forces her to confront her most feared enemy: the past and those very memories she had hoped to forge.

Opening in Philippine theaters soon, "Kite" is released and distributed by Captive Cinema.
