GLAXOSMITTHKLINE: Call to Action Against Pneumonia and Diarrhea #NoHopeLost

GLAXOSMITTHKLINE: Call to Action Against Pneumonia and Diarrhea #NoHopeLost

PNEUMONIA AND DIARRHEA are two of the top leading causes of death among Filipino kids who are less than five years old. This alarming data is not just true in our country but worldwide as well.  What to do? Before you panic, it would be good to know that this can be prevented.

Glaxo Smith-Kline recently held a Pneumococcal and Rotavirus Disease Awareness Campaign were causes and effects of these two diseases were discussed by Dr. Sally Gatchalian, Philippine Foundation for Vaccination Director. Also present in the event was Singer and Mother Ms. Barbie Almabis-Honasan who shared her own experiences as a mother. This events was hosted by Ria Trillo and was held at the Paranaque Room, Shangrila-Makati.

According to National Statistics there is an estimate of 37 Filipino children whose cause of death is pneumonia. In order to prevent this, one must understand how this disease works.

According to Dr. Gatchalian Pneumonia is an inflammatory lung condition that basically affects the microscopic air sacs (alveoli). The symptoms of pneumonia are chest pain, cough, fever, and difficulty of breathing. The infection Pneumococcal disease is caused by the bacterium S. Pneumoniae (pneumococcus). This infection results to life-threatening conditions like pneumonia and it is a result of Acute Otitis Media (AOM) - a common and highly prevalent ear infection. Other severe diseases can be attributed to this, like complicated pneumonia, meningitis, blood poisoning or sepsis - this happens when the pneumococcus “invades” one's blood.

When it comes to the Diarrhea, statistics show that this is the second leading killer of kids under the age of 5. Around, 1.4 million children die of diarrhea yearly.  What causes this?  Together with severe dehydration, the Rotavirus Gastroenteritis (RVGE) causes diarrhea amongst children and that diarrhea is often the main reason for diarrheal hospitalization, mostly common seen amongst babies from 3-24 months.

They say that knowing is half the battle, that's why Glaxo Smith-Kline launched this campaign in order for people use prevention as their number one tool against these two deadly disease.

According to Dr. Gatchalian, “It’s the best time to raise awareness on pneumonia and diarrhea prevention. These diseases should not cause unnecessary suffering to young children. Sometimes it’s just that parents don’t know enough about these diseases, and they don’t know that there are actually vaccines for them.”

Indeed prevention is the key, get your kids vaccinated as much as possible especially against these two deadly diseases in order to make sure to prevent your little ones to be part of the statistics.

Angel Locsin Ready to Marry Luis Manzano But...

Angel Locsin Ready to Marry Luis Manzano But...

In an interview with Anthony Taberna on "Tapatan Ni Tunying" aired Thursday, Angel Locsin admitted that she thought she's all ready to settle down but wishes to achieve one thing else before doing so.

"Dati, gusto ko kasal na ako pagtuntong ko ng 22 pero ngayong 28 na ako, medyo wala pa rin sa isip ko [ang pagpapakasal]." she said.

The 28-year-old actress shared that she would like to be given the chance to finish college before finally tying the knot.

"Bago siguro ako mag-settle down, gusto ko sana makapagtapos," she said.

Asked if she has a course in mind, she mentioned Criminology, before adding in jest, "Kaya lang sabi kasi ng tatay ko magpakamatay na lang daw ako."

Angel, who recently got back together with Luis Manzano, admitted that being single became a disadvantage for her when she was cast in the primetime drama series "The Legal Wife" with Jericho Rosales and Maja Salvador.

"Wala pa naman kasi akong asawa so hindi ko pa na-experience 'yung ganung mga pinagdadaanan. So kumakausap ako ng mga babaeng may asawa na pinagdadaanan 'yung same kwento na nagkakaroon nga affair 'yung asawa nila para maintindihan ko," she said.

She, however, said she enjoys playing roles, in which a lot of viewers can relate to.

"Sobrang gusto ko 'pag nakakagawa ako ng panibagong character na nakaka-relate 'yung ibang tao at somehow nakakatulong na rin sa pinagdadaanan nila. Malaking fulfillment 'yun para sa akin." she said.

"Tapatan Ni Tunying" airs every Thursday on Kapamilya Gold, while "The Legal Wife" airs weekdays, after "Got To Believe."

Benjamin Alves on Piolo Pascual, Gay Kissing, Academic Achievements and His Dual Role on "Adarna"

Benjamin Alves on Piolo Pascual, Gay Kissing, Academic Achievements and His Dual Role on "Adarna"

It's seldom that you see a celebrity with high academic achievements while being exceptionally good in doing what he loves aside from his showbiz commitments. And for Kapuso actor Benjamin Alves, love, passion, determination and hardwork are the key ingredients he never forget to put in his pocket to be able to achieve everything that make his time worthwhile.

Playing a dual role of Bok and Agalon in GMA-7's primetime fanta-series "Adarna", Benjamin believes that their show may have had highs and lows on its flight for ratings but viewership is only one of the criteria to measure a show's success. The actors and the crew's efforts to ensure a quality TV series is also an important factor, says the 24-year old celebrity.

Adarna is on its final week and the series will air its 80th and final episode tonight, March 7, 2014. As of the latest NUTam (National Urban TV Ratings) posted by AGB Nielsen on March 2 with respondents answering the survey for February 25, Adarna is among the ten biggest TV shows, ranking at 5th in daytime and primetime programs with 18.90%. Though 'Honesto' leads that time slot's race with 27.80%, the fantaserye is GMA 7's highest-rated show.

Ratings and performances

When asked about what the cast did to boost the show's ratings leading to its finale week, Alves shared that they tried to remain consistent with their performances. "As an actor, you can only do so much. Unless if you want to be controversial. Basta you should be OK when you're acting is OK," Benjamin divulged during the Adarna bloggers conference in House of Lasagna in Centris last Thursday, February 27. He, however, mentioned that there will be a lot of fight scenes leading to the show's climax and those are something the audience should look forward to.

With Benjamin in Adarna are Kylie Padilla, Geoff Eigenmann and Mikael Daez. Jean Garcia, Jestoni Alarcon, Chynna Ortaleza, Maureen Larrazabal, Dante Rivero, Michelle Madrigal, Saab Magalona and Ryza Cenon are part of the regular supporting cast with Kris Bernal, Solenn Heussaff, Katrina Halili and Alessandra de Rossi as the recurring actors. Adarna is Benjamin's third Kapuso TV series after "Coffee Prince" and the afternoon soap "Unforgettable" also with Kylie Padilla and Mark Herras.

The Piolo Pascual and Summa Cum Laude Association

Benjamin rose to fame via a reality search in 2006 when he was still introduced to the public as Vince Saldana. Six years after, he was launched as a Kapuso talent in Party Pilipinas. Although he was groomed to have his own heartthrob image, Alves was often associated to his uncle Piolo Pascual.

Just like other interviews, Benjamin is proud of Piolo but he declined to have that association as his only ticket to stardom. "I never advertised that. I auditioned for my contract with GMA. I won't deny that it helps a little and you can't get away from it. I am proud of my uncle." He also praised Piolo for the latter's excellent performance in Star Cinema's "Starting Over Again".

Aside from the showbiz blood, Benjamin is easily lured in by showbiz because of his love for literature. A graduate of BA in English with Literature Emphasis at the University of Guam, he expresses appreciation for poetry and old English Literature. Benjamin completed his course with a grade point average of 3.98 from a possible perfect grade of 4.00. "I love to explore more in acting but at the end of the day if I feel that it's not for me, I would also love to write," he shared.

On gay roles and love teams

Moving forward to his showbiz career, Benjamin won't mind if he will be given more kontrabida roles. "Being kontrabida is fun. It is not fun if you play something close to who you are in real life. With the kontrabida roles, you can explore more." When asked if he can play a gay role in the same intensity as what Dennis Trillo and Tom Rodriguez did in "My Husband's Lover", Benjamin didn't show hesitation. "The challenge with gay roles is you don't have the experience to get tips from. But as long as you listen, you can learn. Gay roles are also very interesting." Asked if he is willing to take that part where he needs to kiss another guy in an acting project, Benjamin, without hesitation said, "Yes!"

In "Sana Dati", Benjamin's 2013 Cinemalaya entry, one of his wishes of being an actor came true when he was paired with Lovie Poe. However, Benjamin wants to be in a love team which shall be carried out to all of his projects. Aside from Lovie Poe, he mentioned Heart Evangelista, Jennylyn Mercado and Marian Rivera as his choices for leading ladies.

TV5’s telecast of Game 6 between the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters had all the ingredients of a drama, action and suspense that proved to be a ratings success.  The Wednesday game landed in the top 3 of the most-watched primetime show within its timeslot, based on overnight data from Nielsen Media Research.

A total of 20,337 fans also trooped to the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

From 8-11pm, the game averaged close to 4 million viewers or 9.5%AMR and 32.1% audience share in the National Urban TV Audience Measurement (NUTAM). At its peak, the game was watched by nearly 5.4 million viewers or 12.7%AMR and and 53.7% audience share, surpassing the numbers in the Game 7 of the Semifinals series last February 12. It also managed to equal ABS-CBN’s Got to Believe, and surpassed its subsequent shows - The Legal Wife, Aquino & Abunda and The Biggest Loser while also triumphing over GMA’s Rhodora X and 100 Year Legacy.

It was a very good series for both teams. There was no distinct advantage for either of them. This just proves the decision to put the PBA on TV5 was very beneficial, both to the PBA and to TV5,” said Chot Reyes, Head of Sports5.

The exciting Game 6 was highlighted by the walkout of the E-Painters in the second quarter where head coach Yeng Guiao was protesting the officials’ call. The team eventually returned to court and gave the Coffee Mixers a good fight until the end. The scoring explosion of Mixers guard Mark Barroca helped the team notch the 16th PBA championship for Tim Cone.

"Unlike Dyesebel, Kambal Sirena's story is fresh and original." - Mike Tan

"Unlike Dyesebel, Kambal Sirena's story is fresh and original." - Mike Tan

Startsruck 2 Ultimate Male Survivor Mike Tan, talks about his upcoming GMA-7 primetime fantaseries "Kambal Sirena" which he proudly described as "fresh and original".

The ever straightforward Kapuso young actor admitted that "Kambal Sirena"  lack star power when compared to the competing underwater series "Dyesebel" of ABS-CBN which stars Anne Curtis, Sam Milby, Gerald Anderson and a support cast which include Dawn Zulueta and Eula Valdez. For Mike however, they may not have the big stars but he is proud that their mermaid story is original.

"Ang Dyesebel matagal na yan. Ang Dyesebel nagawa na ng ilang beses. In fact nagawa na ng GMA yan. Pinalitan lang nila ng artista. Sabihin na natin na mas sikat ang artista nila pero yung storya nila iisa lang. Ang Kambal Sirena mas bago, mas orihinal ang story," Mike said. He added that aside from the beautiful imagery and the stunning set design of 'Kambal Sirena', he is excited about how GMA 7 has given a fresh story to the half-human, half-fish mythical creature.

Mike also shared that to overcome the pressure of what could be a tight contest on primetime starting March 10, he and the rest of the cast such as Louise delos Reyes, Aljur Abrenica and Wynwyn Marquez are undergoing workshops. Ratings are basic benchmark for a show's success but Mike said that they are not solely thinking of ratings while in preparation for "Kambal Sirena". "Kung ang iisipin mo ay puro rating lang, babagsak ka. Dapat isipin mo talaga paano pagandahin ang show, paano mo mapo-portray ng maayos ang character mo and the ratings will just follow."

What Hollywood Celebrities Say About Manny Pacquiao

What Hollywood Celebrities Say About Manny Pacquiao

Liam Neeson and Mark Wahlberg may be among the biggest names in Hollywood action movies, but when it comes to “real action stars” both celebrities admit to being fans of Filipino Boxing Champion Manny Pacquiao.

Neeson who narrates the documentary “Manny” says he has been a fan of Pacquiao “for many, many years.”

What a boxer. He is one of the greats,” the Irish actor said during his most recent guesting at ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Kimmel and Neeson then chatted about co-starring together in “Manny,” which will be having its world premiere during the week-long South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas on March 8, 2014.

After I narrated [our] film, the producer sent me an email with a little film footage of Manny saying to the camera; ‘Hello, Liam, I look forward to meeting you,’ and I’m showing it to everybody!” Neeson shared with the TV host.  “I haven’t met him… but he is a fantastic boxer.”

Pacquiao has appeared on the Kimmel show several times, and Kimmel shared those moments as one of the guest celebrities interviewed for the documentary.

Another very vocal Pacquiao fan is Mark Wahlberg, who often visited the 8-division champion at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles whenever Pacquiao trains there.

Wahlberg even credited Pacquiao as his model when he portrayed retired boxer Mickey "Irish" Ward in the movie, “The Fighter.”

Every time he was training at Wild Card Gym, I watched him because my whole approach was, I wanted to look like a Manny Pacquiao-caliber fighter. I didn’t want to look like another actor who’s doing an okay job,” he was quoted in one of his interviews.

Other personalities appearing in the documentary include; actor Jeremy Piven; boxers Oscar de la Hoya and Evander Holyfield, singer Dan Hill, respected sportswriters and boxing analysts as well as friends and family of Pacquiao.

Directed by Ryan Moore and Leon Gast, ‘Manny” takes a look at the inspiring life story of Pacquiao who rose from poverty to become a ten-time boxing world champion, congressman, and international icon.

Gast won an Oscar for best documentary feature (1996) for “When We Were Kings” a film about the classic match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman which happened in Kinshaha, Congo, in 1974.

The film also features original music by composer Lorne Balfe (Inception, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes) and songs by Yardnoise with Chad Hugo (The Neptunes/NERD).

“Manny” opens in theaters on March 12th in Philippine theaters nationwide and will be distributed by Solar Entertainment Corporation.

Pork Barrel Scholars News: Lani Mercado Stops Helping 7,000 Due to PDAF Suspension

Pork Barrel Scholars News: Lani Mercado Stops Helping 7,000 Due to PDAF Suspension

Source: ABS-CBNNews.com

Former actress and now 2nd District of Cavite representative Lani Mercado-Revilla said she can no longer give money to scholars and other people who approach her for help due to Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) suspension.

"I have to tell 7,000 scholars that without PDAF, I can't help them. Nasa menu po ng senador at congressman ang educational assistance, medical assistance, at hospital assistance," she said.

"We give out scholarships to empower people. It is in our menu. Our constituents ask us for medical and burial assistance," she added.

Mercado-Revilla said details on her PDAF-funded projects are posted online in her Facebook account. She also asked people to visit her district "to take a feel of what happens in the ground."

According to a Commission on Audit special report, her husband - Senator Bong Revilla Jr. - was among top 5 senators who used their pork barrel funds from 2007 to 2009.

Under Annex A of the COA report, Revilla requested use of his pork barrel eight times, with a total of P503.85 million.

BIR on Doctors: You're a burden to taxpayers.

BIR on Doctors: You're a burden to taxpayers.

The Philippine Medical Association decried a half-page advertisement by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) as "unfair" to Filipino doctors.

The ad, which appeared in a newspaper on Sunday, March 2, showed a doctor piggybacking on a school teacher with a tally of their income showing that the doctor did not pay taxes while the teacher did.

The image was accompanied by the following text: "When you don't pay your taxes, you're a burden to those who do."

While the PMA supports the government's campaign to collect the proper taxes, "to project to the entire nation through the tri-media that medical doctors are tax cheats per se is absolutely unfair. The medical profession will never be a burden to this country. Doctors were trained and duty bound to render a very noble service to our beloved countrymen. This involves protecting their health and saving their very lives." said PMA President Dr Leo Olarte in a statement.

Which Do You Prefer: One-Night Stand or Long-Term Love? “About Last Night” Helps You Decide

Which Do You Prefer: One-Night Stand or Long-Term Love? “About Last Night” Helps You Decide

Columbia Pictures' new romantic comedy “About Last Night” follows new love on its journey from the bar to the bedroom, and eventually in the real world, where all matchups get put to the test.

A re-imagining of the classic film originally released in 1986 and starring Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins, “About Last Night” stars Kevin Hart (“Grudge Match”), Michael Ealy (“Almost Human”), Regina Hall (“The Best Man Holiday”), Joy Bryant (“Parenthood”), Christopher McDonald (“Billy Madison”) and Paula Patton (“2 Guns”).

The film is directed by Steve Pink (TV's “New Girl”) from a screenplay was written by Leslye Headland, based on the film “About Last Night” written by Tim Kazurinsky and Denise DeClue. Both films are based on the play “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” by David Mamet.
There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship.

Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire?

It’s a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says “I love you” first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or by playing devil’s advocate? (And does it matter if the friends’ romantic lives carry their own problems?)

In the insightful, hilarious romantic comedy “About Last Night,” four Los Angeles singles get a thorough workout in the ups and downs of today’s dating world. On yet another night of playing wingman to his loud-mouthed best friend Bernie (Hart), kind-eyed Danny (Ealy) meets Debbie (Bryant), a beautiful, smart and successful woman who is as skittish about relationships as he is. When the chemistry proves to be undeniable, they end up falling into bed together that night …then another night, and another night.

Against the advice and warnings of Bernie, not to mention Debbie’s precocious bestie Joan (Hall), Dan and Debbie make an attempt to navigate life as a couple. What these starry-eyed lovers soon find is that despite their good intentions and genuine feelings for each other, what started out as a casual and intoxicating intimacy quickly falls prey to the usual trappings of togetherness and monogamy.
Between sex, exes and texts, “hey baby” versus “how was your day?,” and dealing with the holidays -- not to mention all that owning a pet implies -- “About Last Night” puts modern relationships under the microscope, and comes up with a laugh-filled, romantic and highly entertaining take on coupledom.

Opening soon across the Philippines, “About Last Night” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
