It will be recalled that Xian, during the live Chinese New Year countdown of "Banana Nite" on January 30, poked fun at Kim Chiu's look-alike Charmae Viking as Kapuso actress Bea Binene (watch the video HERE) putting him as target of numerous negative comments on social media sites.

According to Kim, Xian has been deeply saddened by the incident, "Sobra siyang na-down kasi ang daming bashers sa Instagram. Hindi ko na nga alam paano siya i-chi-cheer up." the Ikaw Lamang lead star further said.

Massage SPA Mont Albo Owner Nol Montalbo Recalls His Life Struggles

Massage SPA Mont Albo Owner Nol Montalbo Recalls His Life Struggles

Nol Montalbo still can't believe how successful his spa business, Mont Albo Massage Hut, has become.

"Hindi ko pa rin po kaya tanggapin na mayaman, pero gumanda po buhay namin dahil po sa negosyo. Hindi ko rin po naisip na magkakaroon ako ng negosyo," Montalbo told Karen Davila on "My Puhunan."

The 34-year old entrepreneur recounted how he started his business, using his prized possession - a watch - as collateral for a P1,500 loan.

Montalbo, the eldest of four children, was a student of medicine at UP Manila, when his parents' business collapsed.

"Mga naririnig mo na, doctor ka nga, maski singko wala ka naman. Ganoon ka harsh ang society na kahit ano natapos mo, wala yun. Pag wala kang pera, iba tingin sa yo ng mga tao. Kahit pambayad sa kuryente noon, inuutang namin... Talagang gipit, maski pamasahe wala," he said.

He wasn't able to practice medicine, but decided he would start a business to help his family recover. So he decided to ask a classmate for a loan.

"May classmate ako na Chinese sa med school. Sabi niya, hindi ako magpapa-utang kung walang collateral. Wala naman ako collateral, except relo ko. Hindi naman siya mamahalin, pero yun ang binigay ko na collateral. Nagpa-utang siya ng P1,500," said Montalbo, who still keeps the watch until now.

He used the money to start a soap-making business.

"Minsan idideliver mo, hindi naman pala bibilhin so babalik ka ng walang pera. May computer shop kami doon, doon talaga ako nag-stay hanggang madaling araw, hanggang maka-benta ako ng sabon," he said, in tears. "Kailangan ko ng pamasahe pauwi kasi wala akong titirahan dito sa Maynila."

His hard work paid off when a client ordered 70,000 pieces of his home-made soap to be given as Christmas giveaway. He earned P200,000 from the bulk order, which he used as capital for a spa specializing on "hilot", a traditional Filipino massage.

For the spa's first branch, he rented a two-floor apartment Makati City. The first floor was used as the spa, while he and his family and therapists lived on the second floor.

While other spas specialized in Thai or Swedish massage, he thought of specializing"hilot".

"Naisip ko kasi dati ang spa, massage pang-mayaman... Laking-hilot kasi kami. Bakit hindi siya ilagay sa spa? Iyon ‘yong primary source ng health ng mga Filipino noon. Bakit hindi siya gamitin ngayon? So sabi ko, ilagay natin siya sa spa," Montalbo said.

He said the secret to his spa business is the quality of the massage.

"Ang importante po sa massage, is ‘yong massage itself. The quality of the massage. Para pong sa restaurant, kahit gaano kaganda ang interior mo, pag kumain ‘yong tao diyan, iyon [pagkain] ang maaalala niya, hindi ‘yong ambience. Kung hindi masarap ‘yong pagkain, hindi sila babalik diyan. So sa spa po, ganoon din, ‘yong massage talaga," he said.

Mont Albo Massage Hut offers professional "hilot" massage in a modern setting, and even offers meals for customers. Massage therapists undergo professional training.

Because of the quality of his service, in just eight years, he has opened 28 branches of Mont Albo Massage Hut in Luzon and Visayas. Each branch earns P300,000 to P600,000 a month.

Montalbo offered some advice for budding entrepreneurs.

Talagang dapat, you have to have this discipline. You should be hard-working. Kung meron ka noong dalawang ‘yon, and of course a strong faith, very very strong faith in God, at no matter kung saan ka dalhin, you have this strong faith na everything becomes meaningful, kahit may problema, you’ll be successful."

Pussy Riot Band to NYC Mayor: Winter Olympics is Not Just About Games But Russia Itself

Pussy Riot Band to NYC Mayor: Winter Olympics is Not Just About Games But Russia Itself

Pussy Riot Band member Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, currently in the US for Amnesty International's "Bringing Human Rights Home" concert told  American athletes who will be take part in the Winter Olympics to look beyond the facilities created for the games and take a hard look at the host country itself.

The Russian feminist punk rock protest group were released in December after nearly two years in prison following a conviction for hooliganism when they staged a protest in a Russian church, wearing balaclavas and screaming lyrics.

They have been critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and political conditions in their homeland, and blasted their release as an attempt to quiet criticism of human rights issues in Russia before the games in Sochi.

Alekhina, speaking Russian as Tolokonnikova's husband translated into English, said Americans, including President Barack Obama, should past the buildings erected for the games and better "not be afraid to publicly say your thoughts about what you feel is happening in Russia once you are there, during your next visit."

"These objects have no relation to Russia, they are foreign objects in Russia," she said. "The only thing which connects these objects to the country is taxpayer money which has been stolen and which has been used to build these Olympic objects."

The women said their goal is to work toward bringing more transparency to Russian politics and the Russian prison system.

"Khumba" Half a Zebra, 100% Adventure

"Khumba" Half Zebra, 100% Adventure

A zebra is born with only half his stripes into an insular, superstitious herd. Khumba (Jake T. Austin) is immediately ostracized by all the zebras except for his parents and, Tombi (AnnaSophia Robb) a feisty tomboy. In the midst of a drought, a mystical mantis appears to him and draws a map to the legendary waterhole in which the first zebras bathed in and came out striped. When Khumba is blamed for the lack of rain and the subsequent death of his mother, the outcast zebra leaves the confines of his home in search of the waterhole.

Khumba ventures beyond the fence - vulnerable to the tyrannical leopard, Phango (Liam Neeson) who terrorizes all the animals in the Great Karoo. Born blind in one eye and rejected by his family when he was just a cub has made Phango obsessed with being whole. Phango is highly superstitious and, unbeknown to Khumba, has been waiting for the half-striped zebra, which, according to an ancient myth will make him the most powerful hunter that ever lived.

After a close shave with an opportunistic Wild Dog (Steve Buscemi), Khumba teams up with a quirky duo: a hefty, overprotective wildebeest called Mama V (Loretta Devine) and Bradley (Richard E. Grant), a flamboyant but insecure ostrich. The duo join Khumba on his quest in the hope that their own search for a safe waterhole is over, unaware that Phango is on their trail.

On their journey, Khumba encounters a wacky array of characters including a migrating herd of Springbok in search of greener (and safer) pastures; a bohemian community living safely within the confines of a luxurious national park; an endangered Riverine Rabbit who's determination to survive has clearly gone to his head; a Dooms Day cult of Dassies (i.e. rock-rabbits) who fanatically worship the Mighty Black Eagle and a loony, solitary Sheep (Catherine Tate) living on an abandoned farm.

Tensions between the trio escalate as the stakes are raised with each step of the journey and after discovering that the map leads straight to Phango's lair - the trio fall-out and Khumba continues on his quest alone. Lost and delirious in a saltpan, Khumba is rescued by the wise, Gemsbok Healer.

Having intercepted Mama V and Bradley, Phango discovers that Khumba is fortuitously heading straight to him and returns to his cave. Concerned for Khumba's safety, Mama V and Bradley decide to turn back and warn him. Back at the herd, Khumba’s father, Seko (Laurence Fishburne) who has become withdrawn after believing his son to be dead, is remorseful that he has let his herd down. With Tombi’s help, he realises that if he does not lead his herd in search of another waterhole, they will all die.

Outside of the fence, Tombi and Seko are amazed to discover that Khumba is alive but heading to Phango! Meanwhile, determined to find the waterhole and get his stripes, Khumba ventures into the leopard's lair. In a hair-raising, epic battle Khumba succeeds in defeating Phango and uncovers a hidden spring.

Released and distributed by Captive Cinema, “Khumba” opens in cinemas nationwide on February 12.

Akiva Goldsman Talks About "Winter's Tale"

Akiva Goldsman Talks About "Winter's Tale"

Oscar®-winning screenwriter Akiva Goldsman (“A Beautiful Mind,” “The Da Vinci Code,” “I Am Legend”) makes his directorial debut with Warner Bros. Pictures' romantic drama “Winter's Tale” based on the novel by Mark Helprin.

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is a story of miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil.

Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) is a master thief, who never expected to have his own heart stolen by the beautiful Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). But their love is star-crossed: she burns with a deadly form of consumption, and Peter has been marked for a much more violent death by his one-time mentor, the demonic Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). Peter desperately tries to save his one true love, across time, against the forces of darkness, even as Pearly does everything in his power to take him down - winner take all and loser be damned. What Peter needs is a miracle, but only time will tell if he can find one.

Question: When did you first read Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, and what was it about the novel that resonated with you and made you want to make it into a film?

Akiva Goldsman: I read Winter’s Tale when I was in high school, and I grew up in New York. People have called it Mark Helprin’s love letter to New York. It’s a very, very beautiful novel for New Yorkers. But, more importantly, for me, it’s magical realism—which is a genre that is not that common in American fiction, certainly not in American film either—which is the combination of a real world with magic seeping through the mortar between the bricks that really excites me. It really beguiled me. And then, finally, and probably mostly, it truly transcended a love story. It turns on the notion of love making the impossible possible. And if you’re a romantic and a sentimentalist, of which I am both, it’s hard not to be beguiled and magnetized by it.

Q: You describe the novel as a love letter to New York and you obviously love New York.

Goldsman: I’m a New Yorker and New York is character. New York is one of those cities that is like another lead actor. With the right lights and some good luck, it puts in a performance that you take home with you. And I wanted that desperately. Mark had it in the novel. I have it. All New Yorkers or people who love the city have it in their hearts. Everybody has their own New York, and it’s profound and wondrous. So I was desperate to do that, and it was challenging. We were not a big budget movie. Everybody was, as I said, doing it for a favor or a song or a lark. And it was a tremendously adverse winter in New York.

Q: When you set out to adapt the book, what were your challenges and what were you particularly looking forward to bringing to life?

Goldsman: Well, the book is a far more complex and profound object than certainly any two-hour movie could be. It’s closer to a thousand pages than to the 120 pages that are typical for a screenplay. So I had to do that thing, which is part of the nature of adaptation, which is figuring out what to keep and what to sacrifice. There are huge sections of the novel—I mean huge—that are not part of the movie. There’s one character named Hardesty Marratta, who has many hundreds of pages dedicated to him, who does not appear in the movie at all. So, it was about finding that which was most resonant for me and then extracting a story, both from what was there and from my imagination to make a filmic version of it.

Q: Can you talk a little bit about the love story in this film between Peter and Beverly. Why is it different, and how is this film different from a traditional love story?

Goldsman: Well, happily ever after doesn’t look like we imagine it’s going to look when the movie begins, or certainly when the couple meets. There’s a traditional love story in the first two-thirds of the movie, but it is actually traditional ultimately in that it ends the way most love stories end, with one partner surviving the other. And then the question is, how does one find purpose? What is one’s meaning beyond that kind of loss? And I wanted to show that in a dramatic and theatrical way, obviously, rather than sort of a meditation on the nature of loss. But it’s a love story that spans time and mortality.

Q: This is your debut film as a director, after garnering so much acclaim as a writer. How did you find the experience of directing?

Goldsman: I found it exciting and terrifying. It was exactly what I thought it was going to be and nothing like I thought it was going to be. I’ve written and produced quite a few movies and I have done them at close range. I’ve stood on the set of nearly every movie I’ve produced and every movie I’ve written, so I understood what filmmaking was. I understood what I knew; I understood what I didn’t know. What I didn’t understand was just exactly how intense a process it would be when you are not the guy next to the guy, but you’re the actual guy.

Q: Can you talk about the themes of the film, and how miracles and destiny weave into love?

Goldsman: Well, I choose to believe that there is a purposefulness in the universe. I mean it’s a Hail Mary and I choose to believe it. What I mean by that is that I write about it; I want to believe it, and I certainly don’t at my darkest moments or even my medium dark moments. But I’d like to imagine it to be true and to tell my children it’s true.

If you believe in magic at all then you have to believe that love is magic, because it is transformative. It is a suggestion of a kind of connectedness between people, two or many, that is more than what we can see, touch, hear and smell.

So, if you believe in love and you believe in magic, then it’s hard not to believe in miracles because love is miraculous. The idea of epiphany and of a transcendent experience is, for many of us, most closely associated with love - falling in love, loving our children, loving our parents - and loss. That’s the material of the world behind the world, the magical world, the deeper world. Those are the things that I think are wonderful to write about, and I’ll do it as long as they let me.

Opening across the Philippines on February 13, 2014, “Winter's Tale” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

"The Walking Dead Season 4" Premieres February 10 on FOX

"The Walking Dead Season 4" Premieres February 10 on FOX

On February 10, 2014, fans of hit American horror drama series The Walking Dead will be feasting their eyes on the ninth episode of Season 4, the first half of which ended November 2013 and left them clamoring for what will happen next in the saga of Rick Grimes and his unlikely band of survivors. FOX will be premiering the second half of The Walking Dead Season 4 at 11:35 AM with a replay at 8:55 PM, ensuring that the show’s followers will be catching the freshest update on this highly acclaimed show that dramatizes the zombie apocalypse.

The second half of Season 4 will be shown in Parallel Play on FOX, where the episodes are shown on the same day as their US release. Viewers in Asia will be getting their dose of The Walking Dead on the same day as their US counterparts, so they won’t miss a moment of what’s to come in a season that has been critically acclaimed for its first half.

Season 4 began with Rick Grimes relinquishing his leadership of his pack of survivors while they worked to establish a relatively peaceful existence at the prison. However, with the outbreak of a flu-like virus and “The Governor” still at large, peace is the farthest thing from the new community’s reality. The onslaught of new walkers brought about by the increasing deaths due to the virus forces Grimes out of his hiatus to come to the fore in defending the group.

Viewers were gripped by the shockers that came out mid-season, particularly the reappearance of The Governor, who had all the while been wandering on his own and attempting to carve out a new existence. The times he spent with new people, forming new relationships culminate in the desire to care for his newfound family, so much that he dreams of conquering the prison so that they may live there. In the battle that ensues, events result in The Governor ordering the murder of all inhabitants of the prison. The prison is destroyed and overrun with walkers, its inhabitants – including Grimes and his son Carl – scattering in all directions.

Survival of the fittest” was most evident in the first half of The Walking Dead Season 4, where two groups of survivors were pitted against each other, but the second half of the season spells an uncertain future for Grimes and each person he had encountered and traveled with on his journey. The question on everyone’s minds is: How are Grimes and his people to survive without each other? Finally, the continuation of Season 4 will provide answers to the hungry questions of The Walking Dead fans all over the world.

Catch the premiere of the second half of The Walking Dead Season 4 on February 10, 2014 at 11:35 AM with primetime encore at 8:55 PM, only on FOX!

PBA Semifinals TV5 Coverage Scores High Ratings

PBA Semifinals TV5 Coverage Scores High Ratings

The PBA fever is really heating up as proven by the increased crowd attendance and the record-breaking high ratings the games are posting on TV5.

In fact, the currently running PLDT Home DSL PBA Philippine Cup Semifinals series between the San Mig Super Coffee Mixers and Ginebra San Miguel has reached its viewership peak last January 31 when it posted the highest rating for the PBA for a non-Finals game, based on data from Nielsen Media Research.

The Gin Kings overwhelmed the Coffee Mixers in Game 2 of the series with a score of 93-64. Rookie center Greg Slaughter posted monster numbers of 21 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block.

With 19,279 fans in attendance at the SMART Araneta Coliseum last January 31, the game at its peak averaged about 3.2 million viewers or 15% higher than GMA in NUTAM. In MEGATAM, where a critical number of urban viewers are measured, ratings surpassed the two other networks with TV5 claiming 8.7 AMR versus the 8.3 AMR of ABS-CBN and 7.8 AMR of GMA. The recent PBA viewership ratings on TV5 mark the highest ever for the league since 2007.

TV5 also claimed high viewership numbers in Visayas and Mindanao that evening. The Kapatid network garnered 33.8% audience share or 7.1% AMR in the Visayas versus GMA’s 14.9% audience share or 3.1% AMR. Meanwhile, Mindanano viewers were also tuned in to the game, as proven by TV5’s 23.7% audience share or 4.9% AMR against GMA’s 14.2% audience share or 2.9% AMR.

The PLDT Home DSL PBA Philippine Cup is sure to get more viewers as it enters the Finals stage next week and Sports5, the sports production arm of TV5, is all set to deliver the best local sports actions to millions of Filipinos as it has been doing since 2011.

Phil Younghusband Admits: "I got Denise Oca pregnant."

Phil Younghusband Admits: "I got Denise Oca pregnant."

Footballer Phil Younghusband actually admitted impregnating Denisse Oca on Twitter, which was eventually deleted right away. Ely’s Planet got this screencap recently.

The tweet, which says, “It’s true. I got @d_oca pregnant” is one of the most talk about topics online as of this writing, infuriating the fans of Angel Locsin, Younghusband’s former girlfriend who seems to be back in the arms of former boyfriend, Luis Manzano. Manzano has broken up with girlfriend Jennylyn Mercado a few months back.

The controversial tweets speaks more of the break-up of Younghusband and Locsin, which real reasons weren’t confirmed by both parties. Locsin herself remained silent on this.

Denise Oca, the daughter of veteran actress Melissa Mendez is six months pregnant out of wedlock. This is not her first time to be romantically linked with celebrities that are in a relationship though. In 2013, she got romantically linked to John Lloyd Cruz whose current girlfriend is actress Angelica Panganiban. When sought on her comments about the viral photos of Cruz and Oca, Panganiban just laughed it off.

Newest Online Heartthrob Sensations Lead the Cast of TV5's "One of The Boys"

Newest Online Heartthrob Sensations Lead the Cast of TV5's "One of The Boys"

With the success of the first season of their widely-followed socio-experimental reality TV show, fans of Juan Direction will be delighted to hear that the five Fil-Brit hunks are now headed to a newer, bigger and crazier adventure as they star in the weekly sitcom, One of the Boys, which will soon air on TV5.

Having been YouTube sensations prior to being collectively known as Juan Direction, Daniel Marsh, Henry Edwards, Brian Wilson, Charlie Sutcliffe and Michael McDonnell all admit that while they are no strangers to the camera, their inclusion in One of the Boys is still their first foray into the world of acting and comedy.

We are quite nervous about ‘acting’, but what is comforting is that the show’s director, Robert Quebral, encouraged us to just be our normal selves because that is how we were cast here in the first place, and how our followers came to love us,” shares Daniel, who plays group leader Daniel Lennon in One of the Boys.

Henry, who plays the role of race car champion driver Henry Potter, adds, “We are very thankful to TV5 for making us part of this great sitcom! This is a whole new side to Juan Direction that we are definitely excited to share with the viewers.”

One of the Boys is also top-billed by veteran comedian and host Joey de Leon, who plays Daddy Jerry or ‘DJ’- the father figure of the whole cast in the sitcom. TV5 drama princess Eula Caballero plays Gabi Silang, DJ’s only daughter who grew up in the company of boys.

Daniel adds, “I am sure that I speak for Juan Direction, and the whole cast really, when I say that working with Mr. Joey de Leon has been a great experience. I mean, we know that he is such a legend in local showbiz already, but the atmosphere in the set has been surprisingly fun since our first day of taping, thanks to him! And you know, we are actually learning a lot from Mr. Joey too - in delivering our lines, and in acting in general - and that is one more thing why we are really thankful for being part of One of the Boys.

Rounding up the cast are Nadine Samonte (Jana Halliwel), Empoy (Aga), Benjo Leoncio (Marvic) and BJ ‘Tolits’ Forbes (Sunny).

Aside from the laughter and kilig the viewers can look forward to in One of the Boys, the sitcom will also highlight unique Filipino culture and values - something that is not often seen on television shows nowadays.

“300: Rise of an Empire” Hails Themistokles in New Posters

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures have unveiled two new posters for the upcoming action adventure “300: Rise of an Empire” that put Athenian general Themistokles front and center of the action.

“300: Rise of an Empire” pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and Artemesia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

The film is directed by Noam Murro, from a screenplay by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad.

Opening across the Philippines on March 6, “300: Rise of an Empire” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

TV5 Highlights Pinoy Athletes in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games

TV5 Highlights Pinoy Athletes in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games

It is just days away from the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Winter Games and you might be wondering who to look out for in this spectacular event happening in Russia.

After a 22-year absence, the Philippines will be represented by figure skater Michael Christian Martinez from Muntinlupa. The 17-year old Michael is the first homegrown Filipino figure skater competing in The Winter Olympics. Initially, he did not expect to qualify in this year’s Olympic Games but he and his mother took the risk of competing this year. He is looking to qualify and finish in the top 24 in the oldest sport in The Winter Olympics.

Filipino-foreigners will also be making a mark in The Winter Olympics this year. JR Celski is competing in the short-track speed skating for the United States. He is looking for a gold medal finish this year after capturing two bronze medals at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Celski, who is born to a Filipino mother and Polish American father, is considered the face of the US team. His return to this year’s Winter Olympics is a story of triumph as he suffered an injury months before Vancouver 2010. He participated in the last Winter Olympics and won two bronze medals.

Another Filipino to make his mark is Gilmore Junio, a long track speed skater representing Canada. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta to Filipino parents who immigrated to Canada, Junio is considered ‘the fastest Filipino on ice’. According to a Canadian news article, Junio is proud of his Filipino heritage even though many may not know and understand what his sport is in the Philippines. Although he had no relatives who were hit by Typhoon Yolanda, he expressed his thoughts and prayers for those devastated by the calamity. He hopes that his Olympic gold will inspire Filipinos to rise above the hardships they are now going through.

Catch them and all the exciting events of the XXII Olympic Winter Games starting February 8 on TV5, the Philippine Olympic Network. Sochi 2014 will also be brought to your homes and mobile devices with the help of PLDT Home Fibr, Smart and CignalTV.

Emma Thompson is Mary Poppins' Author in Disney's “Saving Mr. Banks” Movie

Emma Thompson is Mary Poppins' Author in Disney's “Saving Mr. Banks” Movie

Two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense and Sensibility”) is the filmmakers' first choice to play “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers in Walt Disney Pictures' inspirational drama, “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Also starring fellow double Oscar® winner Tom Hanks and acclaimed actor Colin Farrell, “Saving Mr. Banks” is inspired by the extraordinary, untold back story of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen.

When you’ve got somebody like Emma Thompson, she has a very large toolbox,” director John Lee Hancock proclaims about his leading lady and her abilities to tackle such a challenging role. “Anytime you’re taking on a character that is that complicated and that sad, there’s a weight that goes along with it. Emma confided in me that it was tough to wake up and play P.L. Travers every day. And it would be great when we were done so she would have hopefully done P.L. proud. She is so incredibly talented.”

Thompson says of the curmudgeonly P.L. Travers, “She was a wonderful case study, requiring so many different shades. She’s one of the most complicated people I’ve ever encountered.”

She adds, “I’ve never played anyone more full of contradictions, which makes it fascinating because she oscillates all the time. Her early life interfered so radically and so successfully with her capacity to have relationships and particularly with her relationships with men. Her father had been so emotionally unstable and unreliable that for her, love was always a very tricky thing. There was a brokenness and an emptiness and a sadness in her.”

Describing Travers at the point of her entry into the story for “Saving Mr. Banks” when she gets to Los Angeles, Thompson says, “She hated the script for `Mary Poppins.' Actually, she appeared to hate everything, but whether she actually did or not is another matter. What she was dealing with were her own issues, which were deep and complex. Her relationship with Mary Poppins was the same really in a sense as Walt Disney’s with Mickey Mouse. Mary Poppins had saved her in a way from the wounds of her own childhood, in the same way as Mickey Mouse had saved Walt. So, it wasn’t as if she was giving this character up with any degree of ease. She felt as though a part of her very soul was being taken away and turned into something that it really wasn't and she found that psychologically difficult.

Thompson also points out another facet of the patchwork quilt that was P. L. Travers. “She was a bit of an intellectual snob,” comments Thompson. “I don't think there’s any question about that and indeed she was an extremely original and clever, talented woman. She was unusual in the sense that she had relationships with highly intellectual men at a time when it was not always easy for women to get access to them.”

Although Travers sought out the company of charming men in her lifetime, Thompson notes, “Walt’s charm was probably easier for her to resist. She would not have thought of him as an intellectual.”

Pamela’s a tough old stick,” producer Collie adds about the film’s main character. “She is, in a sense, not an easy woman to like because she is so controlling and seems to be so humorless. And Emma, of course, portrays all those qualities. But, Emma also brings a certain warmth and just a hint of vulnerability where you want to give Pamela a big hug. That’s the skill of a great actor, to bring that empathy for what is a tough, unsympathetic old character. Emma was perfect casting.”

Thompson has her own take on her character and the story. “It’s about artists,” comments Thompson. “Why they do it and how interesting the relationship between the artist and their childhood is. A lot of children’s authors have had terrible childhoods. What I loved about it was that it was about how early suffering informs what you write, what you make and what you produce as an artist.”

In preparation to take on the persona of P.L. Travers, Thompson listened to tapes of the sessions in Los Angeles between the songwriting team of Richard and Robert Sherman, Walt Disney and Travers, all of which had been saved in the Disney Archives. “The tapes remind me of the myth of Sisyphus because it’s like listening to people push something very, very heavy up a hill and then get to the top and just watch the whole thing roll back down again. It’s really hard work listening to those tapes because P.L. is so awful and so irritating. Just listening to them makes you want to throw something heavy at her.

But there are lots of little clues about what was really going on as well,” Thompson continues. “She’s often performing and there’s a stuttering quality to the tapes that makes it very difficult to listen to because she’s dealing with letting something out of herself that she just doesn’t really want to communicate. There’s a lot of straight negation and a lot of bullying. Of course, no one could say anything. Don DaGradi and the Sherman brothers were stuck in a room with her for weeks on end and just couldn’t say anything because she had to be handled with kid gloves. So, it was a nightmare for them and the tapes are a nightmare to listen to. But they were very, very useful.

Tom Hanks enjoyed the experience of working with Emma Thompson and watching her bring forth the very difficult and complex P.L. Travers. “Every time I’ve seen Emma, I say, how does she do that? How does she make it look so easy? With the work that we did, there was always something going on between us. There was always a secret that Pamela had that Disney himself did not see until literally the end. There’s a scene where Walt Disney is saying, ‘Will you please share with me why this isn’t a good experience for you?’ The emotion that Emma had to bring to a woman who was about to break into tears over something she could not communicate shows the quality of an actress who is forever at the absolute top of her game. She is so far removed from the old English biddy who lives in the townhouse in London, yet her finger is on the absolute pulse of all the Englishness that goes on with that.

Opening across the Philippines on February 26, “Saving Mr. Banks” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.
