The film aims to communicate the fact that every choice in life has a rippling effect that one must inevitably accept and not everyone is blessed with a second chance to love.

Starting Over Again is centered on Ginny (Toni Gonzaga) and Marco (Piolo Pascual) who are former lovers with a major unfinished business to settle in their relationship.

This is the highly anticipated film collaboration between Piolo and Toni who are two of the biggest stars of ABS-CBN. Piolo and Toni worked together 13 years ago in a popular TV commercial where Piolo was the object of a young Toni’s desires. Toni’s famous line, which she shouted to the top of her lungs, “I love you Piolo” remains to be one of the most infectious taglines ever delivered in the history of Philippine advertising.

Since the run of their TVC, Piolo and Toni pursued their individual careers. Piolo continued his prodigious acting career as “Ultimate Leading Man” of the industry. He is a multi-awarded actor and one of the country’s top product endorsers. Piolo appeared in some of the finest Filipino films ever made and his most recent achievement is his superb performance in the film OJT. Toni on the other hand, metamorphosed from an aspiring young actress to being a Box-Office Queen of Philippine movies. Today, Toni has a huge and powerful fan-base and she is regarded as The Ultimate Multi-Media Star who has conquered not only the movies but television and music as well.

In Starting Over Again the wait is finally over, as Piolo and Toni reunite for the very first time in a long overdue romantic comedy.

Can love be rekindled after much pain and heartache? Is there such a thing as true love and destiny? When is a relationship worth saving? Discover all the answers in this upcoming romantic comedy. Starting Over Again is showing nationwide in all cinemas this Valentine.

Pinoys Can Now Enjoy Life in as Fast as 5 Minutes with Panadol®

Pinoys Can Now Enjoy Life in as Fast as 5 Minutes with Panadol®

Whenever I go out of the country, I never failed to bring back home with me a box or two of my most-trusted paracetamol brand Panadol® - the only non-drowsy pain reliever I can take with an empty stomach. So it excites me to learn that, finally, it will be made available to Philippine drugstores and supermarkets starting next month. Thanks to global leading healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).

World’s trusted pain reliever finally arrives in the Philippines as global leading healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) brings (Paracetamol) Panadol® in pharmacies across the country starting  this February.

Now with Optizorb®, Panadol® is the only paracetamol which starts releasing the pain relieving power of paracetamol in five minutes.

Pain is one of the greatest personal, social and economic burdens faced by people around the world,” said John Sayers, President Consumer Healthcare, Asia, Pacific and Latin America, GSK.

Panadol has helped people find pain relief across 85 countries for over 50 years and today we are pleased to bring this leading paracetamol brand to Philippines’ consumers. This is a significant milestone for GSK in line with our global commitment to help people do more, feel better and live longer.”

Panadol® is one of the world’s leading paracetamol-based pain relievers which is sold in more than 85 countries. Last year alone, 15 billion (paracetamol) Panadol® tablets were sold worldwide.

The brand is testament to our customers’ trust and faith in the product which boasts an extensive scientific research breakthrough such as the Optizorb® technology in our new Panadol® which is the first and only paracetamol product that contains Optizorb®,” added Sayers.

Panadol® with Optizorb® is the only paracetamol brand with the unique Optizorb® disintegration system which allows the release of its medicine in as little as five minutes vs. regular paracetamol tablets. Studies conducted by GSK have proven that 75 percent of people who take Panadol with Optizorb® caplets reach pain relieving levels of paracetamol in the bloodstream significantly faster than those taking other generic pain relieving brands.

With a greater rate of absorption, (paracetamol) Panadol® with Optizorb® delivers therapeutic concentrations to most people suffering from a variety of pain even those with common medical conditions, such as stomach problems and heart disease.

Panadol® with Optizorb® also has the broad suitability associated with standard paracetamol .  This means that it is well tolerated and will not irritate the stomach when used as directed.

Following a study conducted in Philippines, we found that seven out of ten Filipinos suffer from regular headaches, and over half from muscle aches and pains in the past three months. These pain sufferers have indicated fast relief of pain  is of core importance and this has encouraged us to provide a fast and effective solution like Panadol® with Optizorb® to alleviate this health condition,” said Jeoffrey Yulo, General Manager Consumer Healthcare, GSK Philippines.

(Paracetamol) Panadol® with Optizorb® comes in 36 x 10s dispenser box and each 10s catch cover has an SRP of P32.00 and will be available at all leading drugstores nationwide, starting February 2014.

Oscars 2014 Best Actress Contender Cate Blanchett in “The Momuments Men”

Oscars 2014 Best Actress Contender Cate Blanchett in “The Momuments Men”

Cate Blanchett,  this year’s Best Actress winner at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards (for her role in “Blue Jasmine”) and nominated at the 86th Academy Awards (Oscars) stars in a sweeping true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history where she is the only woman among “The Monuments Men.”

Based on the real history chronicled in the non-fiction book “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History” by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter,  “The Monuments Men” is an action drama focusing on seven over-the-hill, out-of-shape museum directors, artists, architects, curators, and art historians who went to the front lines of WWII to rescue the world’s artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and return them to their rightful owners.  The Monuments Men found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

The film is directed, co-written, co-produced and starred in by George Clooney with a phenomenal ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett.

Cate Blanchett rounds out the cast as Claire Simone, a Frenchwoman in a unique position in Occupied France.  “This story opens up the Second World War in a way that gives you a different perspective on it,” says Cate Blanchett, who plays a key role as Claire Simone, a woman who holds the key to the secret location of thousands of priceless pieces of stolen art.

These men were spurred on by a higher ideal.  So many of the works that we take for granted in the great museums of the world were returned by this band of men – it was a near impossible task.  Absurd, in a way: non military men going to the front lines and asking generals to stop bombing a certain church or area to save a window, or a sculpture or mural – you wonder how  they were able to save anything at all.  It’s an extraordinary, selfless thing that they did, done to preserve history.”

Claire Simone is a curator at the Jeu de Paume – once an art museum but became a kind of depot for art looted by the Nazis,” Blanchett explains.  “But her real work goes on at night, when she records the provenance of the works and where they were being taken in an obsessively detailed way. She’s the catalyst for the third act of the movie – the Monuments Men know the works are disappearing but they don’t know where they are going, and they need her information.”

Blanchett says that there was truly something different about the ways the Nazis went about looting art.  “In every war, there’s looting. What was shocking to me was the mathematical, calculated and systematic way the Nazis went about their looting, and the fact that their acquisition of works began as early as 1938.”

The other element that made the Nazi looting different was the so-called Nero Decree.  “When Hitler realized he was going to lose the war, he ordered that everything the Nazis had amassed was going to be destroyed.  He was going to leave nothing in the hands of the victors,” Blanchett explains.  “In relation to the art, what the Nero Decree meant was that everything that they had stolen was to be destroyed.

Matt’s character, Granger, must win her trust,” Blanchett continues. “There was an understandable fear on the part of the French that, if the works were recovered by the Allies from the Nazis, they’d simply go to collections or collectors in Russia and the United States. From that standpoint, did it really matter whether it was stolen by the Germans, the Russians or the Americans?

Ultimately, Granger and Simone forge an unusual bond, Blanchett says.  “I think the love story that exists between them is a mutual love of art, of culture.” Blanchett says. “They are both gripped – passionately gripped – by the importance of saving this work for all time. They believe that no single person can ever truly own a masterpiece. It’s for everyone. So, I think they’re united in the nobility of the cause.”

Blanchett’s character is inspired by Rose Valland, a French woman who bravely and secretly kept track of the Nazis’ systematic tracking, risking her life in the process. “Rose Valland was, at first, a volunteer and then overseer at the Jeu de Paume, which adjoins the Louvre. During the war, it was a depot for looted Jewish art collections and other objects.  Hermann Göring basically used the Jeu de Paume as a shopping mall – the Nazis set it up like an exhibition space for the pilfered art,” Blanchett explains. “Her work singlehandedly saved crate-loads, castle-loads full of works of art that otherwise could have easily been destroyed. The fact that she was working alone was an act of extraordinary bravery. I think she was able to achieve what she did because she didn’t stand out – she was the woman least likely.

“The Monuments Men” opens February 12 in cinemas nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Wicked in Manila: Bewitchingly Magnificent

Wicked in Manila: Bewitchingly Magnificent

Lunchbox Theatrical Productions Limited, together with VISA and SMART Infinity, finally brings the most awaited Broadway touring production ever hit Manila. “WICKED, The Untold Stories of the Witches of Oz” finally opened at the CCP last January 22, 2014 and will run until March.

WICKED in Manila is part of the production’s 10th anniversary tour wherein it has been presented already in Singapore, Korea and now Manila and returns to Australia by March.   According to Lunchbox producer, James Cundall “This is the real mccoy.” The spellbinding production has won 50 major awards including 3 Tony Awards and a Grammy Award.

For WICKED IN MANILA, expect top-quality performances led by Helpmann Award Nominee for Best Leading Actress Jemma Rix (Elphaba) and 2009 Sydney Theatre Award nominee for Best Newcomer Suzie Mathers (Glinda).

As Elphaba, Rix delivers a realistic portrayal of the socially inflicted emerald skinned witch.  Beyond the green make-up, Rix’s organic acting combined with her mesmerizing singing voice provides the right pathos to make Elphaba more relatable.  Audiences would see Elphaba as a real person, beyond the iconic persona  is loosely-based from.  Her DEFYING GRAVITY is steady, strong and powerful that will surely leave you goosebumps. The political of the character in the book is seen through her steely rendition.

Mathers on the other hand was “perky, quirky, flighty”  who definitely lighted the stage with her stage presence.  Her rendition of “Popular”  was very funny that audiences are truly entertained. Later on in the story, Mathers is able to bring out a three-dimensional characterization for Glinda as she showed depth to the once over ecstatic witch. Glinda matures gracefully without being too serious.

The carefree college-age hedonist Fiyero is portrayed by Steve Danielson with some swagger at the beginning of the play but his character charms his way to the audience’s hearts as he shifts not only his love interest but also his ideals in life.  Veteran stage actress Maggie Kirkpatrick portrays her character  Madame Morrible like a true classic villain. You would be confused whether you would love to hate her or not.

Star Wars actor Jay Laga’aia is brilliant as the Wizard and though he is to blame for his actions you’re heart will go out with him when he sings ’I'm a Sentimental Man.’ One will see the mellow side of the Wizard who always wanted to be a father. He feels morose upon knowing he is Elphaba’s father and the reality that he is the cause of her demise.  Equally giving stellar performances are Steve Danielsen,  Emily Cascarino, Edward Grey and Nathan Carter.

Other highlights of the play is “One Short Day”  boasts of the emerald green costumes that will bring you the same awe as Elphie and Glinda as they arrive at the Emerald City. But as always, the song “For Good”  sang by Rix and Mathers encapsulate the depth and friendship of these two women. The voices, the emotions and the diction of the actors are well delivered through their lyrics.

As mentioned WICKED in Manila has the  same sets, props and effects of the Broadway show including the 2 million dollars worth of costumes designed by Tony Award winning costume designer Susan Hilferty.  All 54 scenes and locations are given distinct lighting and mood.   The transitions from one scene to another is seamless and nothing short of spectacle. The orchestra executes the music with the same grandeur and rendition, that when you close your eyes you will be transported to the land of Oz and hear familiar voices that in way will make you feel at home. WICKED in Manila will definitely bewitched you with the same spell binding moment as if you are in the great white way.  And indeed, people who have seen the production could attest to that.

Check out WICKED IN MANILA Press Photos HERE.

WICKED in Manila is presented by Lunchbox Theatrical Productions, David Atkins Enterprises, Concertus Manila, VISA, Smart Infinity. The show will run until March. Tickets are available at TicketWorld at 891-9999 or log-on to

Showtime’s “I Am PoGay”: On Coming Out, Stealing Pick-up Lines and the Evolution of Chicken

Showtime’s “I Am PoGay”: On Coming Out, Stealing Pick-up Lines and the Evolution of Chicken

ABS CBN’s noontime show “It’s Showtime” has launched another intriguing, Twitter -trending,  segment called “I Am PoGay” - featuring handsome men that is actually not men.

The first two brave contestants of the show were 23-year-old Dennishon Bryan Reyes-Javier and 29-year-old Erimar Ortigas.

First Impressions

I really felt bad when they came out. I mean, honestly how come all the cute men are gay. I mean I have gay friends of course, it’s just sad because I’m trying to look for a perfect partner and the straight ones are not even worth much of my time…well so far.  I have “paminta” crushes too, that’s why I’m a little dismayed because all the cute guys are taken by both girls and boys.

Personally, the said segment was very entertaining. I admire contestant number one’s bravado “Brixx” when he confidently chose the show as a way to formally come out of the closet.  He said was very grateful for the program because it gave him strength to fully show to the world, especially his parents who had no idea of his true gender. Except for his subject-verb agreement, wherein I too am a victim sometimes, I find him deep, serious (as Jhong Hilario mentioned) and someone who can. Oh, and who can forget him being a fashionista and wearing a studded belt.

The second contestant, who sashayed his way to the  hearts of the audience even more, “Mhar” was naturally confident and had swift and straight answer.  He later confessed that he has been joining pageants (or in gay language, “pageantry”) thus his quick answer during the “visual” question and answer. The other thing that made the second contestant memorable was his “kainis but entertaining” talent where he did a pseudo-Igorot dance then did ummmm… “the evolution of the chicken” just watched the video :P

Stealing Beauties

Another thing that really made me laugh was when Mhar stole Brixx pick-up line. When Brixx forgot to deliver his line earlier during the introduction, Mhar decided to used it, unknown to Brixx. Continue reading HERE.

Angel Locsin "How To Get Over a Break-Up" Tips

Angel Locsin "How To Get Over a Break-Up" Tips

How do you move on from a breakup? Angel Locsin, who seems to have gotten over her high-profile split from Azkals player Phil Younghusband, shares her thoughts during the press conference for her upcoming series "The Legal Wife" on Tuesday.

As a starting point, the Kapamilya actress said you must first avoid the person you loved.

"Huwag mong pansinin para makapag-move on. Iyon ang unang hakbang," she said.

"Pero sa akin kasi ang ma-a-advice ko lang talaga diyan ay magdasal po tayo. Kasi mas alam ng Diyos kung ano ang magandang plano," she stressed, adding "Hayaan ko na lang na Diyos ang magplano ng buhay ko at harapin kung ano amg ibibigay niya sa akin. Dahil hindi naman niya ako bibigyan ng hindi ko kakayanin,"

Angel recently made headlines for admitting that she is still in love with her former boyfriend Luis Manzano but also stressed that the actor-host was not the reason she and the Phil broke up.

"Si Phil ilabas natin sa usapan pero masasabi ko honestly na wala kaming usap kahit text ni (Luis noong kami ni Phil) at masasabi ko minahal ko 'yung tao (si Phil) talaga. Walang panlolokong involved," she said. -

This year, Sheena Halili celebrates two important happenings in her life. Aside from her 10th anniversary in show business, the Kapuso star is also celebrating her 27th birthday.

On Wednesday, instead of having a birthday blast, Sheena decided to give back by spending her special day with the joyful Lolos and Lolas at the Home for the Golden Acres in Quezon City.

"Mas pinili kong pong i-celebrate yung day na ito kasama ng mga Lolo at Lola kase malapit po talaga ako sa mga matatanda. Nakikita ko po yung Lola ko sa kanila. Malayo po kase sila sa amin kaya 'pag may time ako katabi ko s'yang natutulog." the birthday celebrant told some members of the press present during the celebration.

When asked what she wishes for now that she's already 27, Sheena said "Sana po magtuloy-tuloy pa yung mga projects para makatulong pa ako sa mga tao."

How about her lovelife?

"Naku, 27 na po ako so hindi na din ako naghahanap ng boyfriend. Gusto ko yung dadating ay yung husband material na. Gusto ko na din kase na mag settle down. Pero dapat yung yung guy solid yung faith niya kay God." she confessed.

TV5 Stars Nora Aunor, Chot Reyes and Megan Young Receive ‘People of the Year’ Awards

Some of TV5’s brightest personalities were recently honored for their achievements in their respective fields during People Asia’s People of the Year Awards 2014.

Representing the Kapatid Network in this year’s much-awaited awards night were veteran actress Nora Aunor and Smart Gilas Pilipinas coach and Sports5 Head Chot Reyes, along with Miss World 2013 Megan Young.

The country’s one and only Superstar, Nora Aunor, was honored for her world-class talent and celebrated career, having racked up countless awards locally and in the global stage. The Superstar, who top-billed the TV5 primetime drama series Sa Ngalan ng Ina and Never Say Goodbye, will soon star in the light drama, comedy musical Trenderas.

Coach Chot Reyes, who is currently the Head of Sports5, the sports division of TV5, was likewise recognized for leading the Smart Gilas Pilipinas to a Silver Medal finish in the FIBA Asia Championships 2013.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young was also honored for putting the country in the world’s spotlight by finally winning the elusive Miss World crown. Megan starred in two of TV5’s primetime series, Misibis Bay and Never Say Goodbye.

People Asia’s People of the Year Awards 2014, which has been honoring outstanding individuals annually since 2004, was also attended by President Benigno S. Aquino III and Vice President Jejomar C. Binay.

Coco Martin and Cory Vidanes Awarded "People of The Year"

Coco Martin and Cory Vidanes Awarded "People of The Year"

ABS-CBN Broadcast Head Cory Vidanes was among the 14 personalities recognized by People Asia magazine in its annual “People of the Year” for her vital role in the achievements of the country’s largest media conglomerate over the past years, particularly her involvement and passionate support for the network’s public service campaigns.

Servicing the Filipino people - that’s what we’re really here for. Our work is tough. There is so much stress, sacrifices, and sleepless nights. But at the end of the day, what keeps us going is the mission to reach out to Pinoys all over the world,” said Vidanes in the article.

In its 14th anniversary issue, People Asia highlighted how Vidanes can work quietly on the sidelines and achieve greatness without calling much attention to it.

Aside from spearheading campaigns that further increased ABS-CBN’s ratings, Vidanes has been very much involved in the network’s public service projects that include the network’s recent “Tulong Na, Tabang Na, Tayo Na” campaign for the victims of super typhoon Yolanda.

I feel that I was put in this place by God because this is my purpose. If I can touch, empower or inspire the Filipino in any way I can, then I will always stay in ABS-CBN,” she added.

Other ABS-CBN personalities included on the list were actor Coco Martin, who was recognized for his contribution to Philippine television and cinema, and Miss World 2013 Megan Young, for being the first Filipina to win the much-coveted title after 62 years and for her embodiment of the pageant’s credo ‘beauty with a purpose.’

In 2010, ABS-CBN president Charo Santos-Concio was also among the “People of the Year” awardees for being the first female president of the country’s leading media corporation.

People Asia began the ‘People of the Year’ awards back in 2004. It aims to recognize world-class Filipinos who have made the country proud with their achievements, advocacies, and notable contributions to the Filipino society.

Crime Has a New Enemy in “Robocop”

Crime Has a New Enemy in “Robocop”

It is the year 2028, when the city of Detroit is being patrolled by the most unique and relentless crime fighter in the world: the half man/half robot Alex Murphy, also known as RoboCop. Condemned to a certain death after being the victim of a terrible explosion, our hero was given a second chance by the powerful corporation OmniCorp, specialized in designing and constructing robots, that offers him the possibility to inhabit a new and powerful mechanical body that enables him, not only to continue living, but to be stronger and faster than he ever could have imagined.

When Murphy’s wife Clara reluctantly signs off under strenuous pressure the authorization for her fading husband to be a part of the newly devised RoboCop program, as what is explained to her as the only way of keeping him alive, little does she know that they are puppets in the middle of a gigantic political and corporate battle.

That is the story of Columbia Pictures' “RoboCop,” based on the classic cult movie directed by Paul Verhoeven in 1987, which will hit theatres all over the world as an action-packed adventure constructed around themes that seem more relevant today than ever before.

Being a physicist before getting involved in filmmaking, the Brazilian director Jose Padilha was fascinated by the themes of the story: “Humanity has evolved a lot, which we can see through the increase of our average life-span. There is undeniable progress. I love science because it has changed things mostly in a very positive way; but, as a famous physicist once said, ‘Science is a key that can open two doors: the door to heaven and the door to hell.’ So, you should be weary of what you do with it and keep your eyes open. And the reason to make a movie like RoboCop is precisely to discuss things like what does it entail to have robots pulling triggers. Because if they kill a kid by mistake, who is to blame? Once you get autonomous machines making life and death decisions accountability becomes fuzzy, and that is something we need to discuss because it is an area where science can go astray.”

The first step was to construct an exciting script around that concept and find the right actor to play Alex Murphy/RoboCop, a role that would end up in the hands of Joel Kinnaman. “There is a big difference between the vision of a robot in 1987 to our future vision of a robot now, because today we already have robots and people with bionic hands and legs that work perfectly well,” explains the Swedish born actor. “So, our vision of a robot in 15 years is going to be something that is pretty advanced!

I am pretty sure we will have international debates in the UN trying to decide what is correct or incorrect about the use of autonomous robots in war,” foresees Padilha, “and the same thing will be discussed in every country in regards to their law enforcement laws and the constraints and of what robots can or cannot do. It’s going to happen! And our movie is grounded this way, as its premise is that you cannot use robots for law enforcement in America. Only a conscious human being can be allowed to pull the trigger, because only a human being understands what it is to be human and the true value of human life. So, contrary to the original movie, my RoboCop doesn’t die and become a soulless robot. His brain is intact! This way the emotions and cognitive capacity of Alex Murphy are in there the day he wakes up and finds out he is a robot.”

Opening across the Philippines in Feb. 05, 2014, “RoboCop” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

“Do You Hear The People Sing?” Concert Runs from January 29 to 30 at RWM NPAT

“Do You Hear The People Sing?” Concert Runs from January 29 to 30 at RWM NPAT

On January 29 & 30, 2014, the creators of the international musical sensations Les Misérables and Miss Saigon will present a special concert entitled “Do You Hear the People Sing?” celebrating their work at the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) in Resorts World Manila (RWM) to raise funds to offer humanitarian relief and assist the rebuilding efforts after parts of the Philippines were left devastated in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda.
The concerts, which will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity Philippines, will celebrate the works of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, including musical numbers from Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, La Révolution Française, Martin Guerre and The Pirate Queen. Supported by the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra and a 100-member choir, conducted by musical director Gerard Salonga, the concert is headlined by some of the world’s leading musical theater performers.

Lea Salonga, the Tony Award winning Filipina performer who rose to international stardom when she was cast in the original production of Miss Saigon, will headline the concert alongside Australian theater star David Harris (Miss Saigon, Wicked, Legally Blonde) and Marie Zamora (Barnum, Kiss Me Kate), the acclaimed French soprano who was the original Cosette in the Paris production of Les Misérables. Salonga, Harris and Zamora featured in the recent Asia Pacific Premiere of Do You Hear The People Sing? in China.

In celebration of the long association between the Philippine theater community and the work of Boublil and Schönberg, the concert evening will feature special guests and a large ensemble made up of performers who have appeared in Miss Saigon throughout the world. The entire company is donating their time and services pro-bono. In addition to these unique performances, there will be an online auction of memorabilia and gala night tickets (including hotel accommodation) for the opening nights of Les Misérables (Broadway and Melbourne, Australia); Miss Saigon (London).

Along with Bouberg Productions, Enda Markey and the performers who waived their talent fees, “Do You Hear the People Sing?” is the latest effort of RWM in a series of fundraisers to help in the relief and rebuilding phase following the destruction brought about by the typhoon—the first being the “1tayo” relief operation in partnership with other players in the industry and the second being the “Kami Naman Ang Taya” benefit concert held at the NPAT last December 3. Funds raised from this latest production and auction will go towards the rebuilding programs for the survivors of the typhoon. The event hopes to raise funds with the goal of building 200 homes in areas ravaged by Typhoon Yolanda through Habitat for Humanity Philippines.

Reflecting on their long association with the Philippines, composer Claude-Michel Schönberg said, “The Philippines gave me the voices of Miss Saigon, my daughter Margot and the joy of seeing Filipino babies adopted all around the world for nearly two decades already from my Manila orphanage, Sun and Moon.”

Alain Boublil added “Creating Miss Saigon with those numerous talented Filipino artists was the answer to a prayer. These two concerts bring this extraordinary adventure back to life and a chance for us to modestly contribute to those lives that were shattered. Let’s hear the people sing!”

“Do You Hear the People Sing?” will feature the music and lyrics of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, creators of Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. It will run from January 29 to 30, 8pm at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Manila, Philippines. The Untold Story of Mary Poppins Arrives in Cinemas Worldwide

The Untold Story of Mary Poppins Arrives in Cinemas Worldwide

In 1961, Walt Disney invited “Mary Poppins” author P.L. Travers to his studio in Los Angeles to discuss, in person, his continued interest in obtaining the movie rights to her beloved book and character—a pitch he first made to her in the 1940s. Still hesitant and disinterested after all those years, Travers wanted to tell the Hollywood impresario to go fly a kite but with dwindling sales of her books and a bleak economic future looming, P.L. Travers said yes and embarked on a two-week sojourn in Los Angeles that would ultimately set the wheels of the beloved film in motion.

Now, Walt Disney Pictures presents “Saving Mr. Banks,” a film inspired by this extraordinary, untold back story of how Disney’s classic “Mary Poppins” made it to the screen, starring two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson, fellow double Oscar® winner Tom Hanks and acclaimed actor Colin Farrell.

“Mary Poppins’” journey to the screen begins the moment Walt Disney’s daughters beg him to make a movie of their favorite book, P.L. Travers’ “Mary Poppins.” Walt makes them a promise to do so, but it is a promise that he doesn’t realize will take 20 years to keep. In his quest to obtain the rights, Walt comes up against a curmudgeonly, uncompromising writer who has absolutely no intention of letting her beloved magical nanny get mauled by the Hollywood machine. But, as the books stop selling and money grows short, Travers reluctantly agrees to go to Los Angeles to hear Disney’s plans for the adaptation.

For those two short weeks in 1961, Walt Disney pulls out all the stops. Armed with imaginative storyboards and chirpy songs from the talented Sherman brothers, Walt launches an all-out onslaught on P.L. Travers, but the prickly author doesn’t budge. He soon begins to watch helplessly as Travers becomes increasingly immovable and the rights begin to move further away from his grasp.

It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that Walt discovers the truth about the ghosts that haunt her, and together they set Mary Poppins free to ultimately make one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

Expounding on the premise of the film, director John Lee Hancock says, “It’s really a fantastic story, but it’s not the behind-the-scenes look at the making of ‘Mary Poppins.’ You’re not on a soundstage with a young Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Our story takes you back two to three years before the actual production of the movie began.

“Walt Disney saw the promise of that movie, which made it worth dealing with P.L. Travers to secure the rights. That’s our story, a fantastic story, about a beloved movie, its own story and characters, and the origins of how it became this amazing, groundbreaking film. On a deeper level, it’s also about two storytellers and Disney’s journey trying to discover why P.L. Travers holds on so dearly and protectively to her story and the image of this father she adored,”Hancock concludes.

Colin Farrell co-stars as Travers’ doting dad, Travers Goff, along with British actress Ruth Wilson (Disney’s “The Lone Ranger”) as his wife, Margaret; Oscar® and Emmy® nominee Rachel Griffiths (“Six Feet Under”) appears as Margaret’s sister Aunt Ellie (who inspired the title character of Travers’ novel); and a screen newcomer - 11-year-old Aussie native Annie Rose Buckley - is the young, blossoming writer, nicknamed Ginty, in the flashback sequences.

The cast also includes Oscar® nominee and Emmy® winner Paul Giamatti (“Sideways”) as Ralph, the kindly limousine driver who escorts Travers during her two-week stay in Hollywood; Jason Schwartzman (“Rushmore”) and B.J. Novak (“Inglourious Basterds”) as the songwriting Sherman brothers (Richard and Robert, respectively); Emmy winner Bradley Whitford (“The Cabin in the Woods”) as screenwriter Don DaGradi; and multi-Emmy winner Kathy Baker (“Edward Scissorhands”) as Tommie, one of Disney’s trusted studio confidantes.

“Saving Mr. Banks” is directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Blind Side”) from a screenplay written by Kelly Marcel and Sue Smith.

Opening across the Philippines on Feb. 26, “Saving Mr. Banks” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Marian Rivera Named "Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw"

Some say that society is kinder to women who have fresh faces and voluptuous bodies. In the fictional town of Santa Maria, however, beauty is seen as a curse rather than a gift. This is what Carmela, portrayed by GMA’s Primetime Queen Marian Rivera, will discover in one of the network’s most-anticipated programs.

Carmela revolves around a woman’s struggles to fight for her family, make life-changing decisions, and follow her heart amidst people’s harsh and hasty judgments. At a young age, Carmela will learn how to fend for herself after being separated from her mother. Her experiences growing up will motivate her to persevere until she eventually makes her way back to her hometown.

As Carmela creates her own path to bring justice to those who tore her family apart, she will break stereotypes that are often attributed to women. Her actions will prove that she is way more than just a pretty face.

Joining Marian’s Carmela is Yago, played by one of GMA’s top leading men, Alden Richards. Despite being at the top of the social hierarchy, Yago will fall head over heels in love with the show’s heroine. In the process, Carmela will inspire Yago to overcome his flaws and insecurities and change the way he views life.

Local and international audiences will surely be captivated by the beauty and complexity of Carmela. With some of the industry’s most coveted actors and actresses pooling their talents together, GMA’s newest primetime offering directed by Dominic Zapata is set to revolutionize the concept of beauty and show how strength of heart and character can overcome any obstacle.

“Bride for Rent” Enters Top 10 Highest-Grossing Pinoy Movie of All Time List

“Bride for Rent” Enters Top 10 Highest-Grossing Pinoy Movie of All Time List

Star Cinema's latest romantic comedy movie “Bride for Rent” starring Kim Chiu and Xian Lim has reportedly grossed P100-million only after 4 days of screening. Observing the long lines in the cinemas, the movie is poised to smash the PHP200 million-mark after 10 days, or even earlier.

But why the big deal? The 10th placer in the Philippines’ all-time top grossing films, Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd’s “You Changed My Life”, earned PHP225.21 million. In 2 weeks, “Bride for Rent” is on its way to be one of the country’s 10 most prolific movies to ever hit the big screen.

On the 5th day and right after Star Cinema proclaimed that “Bride for Rent” crossed the PHP100 million-mark, I went out to watch the film. I patiently looked for the reasons why the second Xiam Lim- Kim Chiu starrer surged in box office earnings, providing a remarkable start to the local industry for 2014.

Overall, Bride for Rent saw Kim Chiu and Xian Lim in a different phase of their careers. Kim proved she is better in romantic comedy and Xian gave us a glimpse that he can do drama, even for just a little. With the story not requiring a massive and dazzling production, the movie looked good. Although the film appears to be shallow and non-insightful, it actually found a way to carry relevance with the interviews of real-life couples.

Film reviewers dislike the usual rich guy- poor girl plot. This is tried and tested and we can’t hate the writer(s) for determining what’s within the bounds of KimXi (Kim- Xian love team) and what their fans expect from them. Sounds commercial really, but before we push two of the brightest young stars our local industry has into doing something greatly cinematic and highly artistic, we must not forget to enjoy. To the hopeless, let’s give them this moment to feel the romance.

Love and Sanity Collide in TV5′s Newest Primetime Drama Series ‘Obsession’

Love and Sanity Collide in TV5′s Newest Primetime Drama Series ‘Obsession’

Pushing the boundaries of love and sanity, a young woman driven by heartbreak undergoes extensive cosmetic surgery to make her former boyfriend fall in love with her again.

This is the intriguing premise of TV5′s newest Thursday primetime series Obsession, the network’s first drama offering for 2014. Topbilled by Marvin Agustin, Martin Escudero, Neri Naig and Bianca King, Obsession is a psycho-drama that revolves on love, revenge, and how too much of both can go against the limits of human sanity.

The story centers on the life of Bernadette (Neri Naig), a chemist in a successful beauty company that develops different vanity products. Growing up in a world where she is always second-best, Bernadette became highly insecure and unhappy about herself. Her relationships were short-lived because of her tendency to be possessive. This changed when she met James (Martin Escudero), a playboy who made Bernadette fall for him. Bernadette became obsessively in-love with James, which caused their eventual breakup.

Ramon (Marvin Agustin), a famous cosmetic surgeon and a self-made billionaire, finds Bernadette in distress. He offers Bernadette a chance for a new life by taking part in his company’s experimental procedure - a procedure that involves changing her face and identity. Various psychological and emotional therapies were done to prepare Bernadette for the actual surgery. Bernadette becomes Vanessa (Bianca King), determined to seek revenge by making James fall in love with her again.

But as Vanessa gets absorbed in her manipulative schemes, Ramon also becomes obsessively in-love with his creation and is willing to move heaven and earth just to satisfy his obsession.

Will Bernadette be successful in her plans to make James fall in love with her again? Or is it Ramon who will capture the heart of his muse, Vanessa? In a twisted story of love and deceit, who will win in a game where people are not what they seem?

Completing the cast are Elizabeth Oropesa who will portray Regina, a surgeon and the patronizing mother of Ramon; and Maureen Mauricio as Eliza, the overprotective mother of Bernadette who is willing to give up her career to take care of her child.

Obsession is directed by Direk Jay Altarejos and will heat up Thursday primetime starting on January 23, 8pm on TV5.

Maria Conchita Alonso Removed from The Vagina Monologues Play

Maria Conchita Alonso Removed from The Vagina Monologues Play

Maria Conchita Alonso will no longer appear in The Vagina Monologues. Why? Because she endorsed California Republican Tim Donnelly for Governor in a campaign ad.

Conchita Alonso, an outspoken foe of the socialist dictatorships in Venezuela and Cuba, has 93 acting credits on IMDB and was a former Miss World/Venezuela. She was born in Cuba and was raised in Venezuela.

The somewhat awkward (presumably intentionally so) video features the actress providing a humorous Spanish-language spin to Donnelly’s presentation. “Politicians and big government are killing our prosperity, driving businesses out of our state, pushing welfare costs through the roof, and driving our schools into the ground.” Alonso’s take: “We’re screwed.”

Donnelly, a Tea Party favorite and a hawk on border security, goes on to say among other things that he wants to “create a Tsunami of jobs by unleashing California’s natural resources and shutting down bureaucratic overregulation.”

A state assemblyman who is a married to a woman of Filipino descent and with her has five sons, Donnelly has made other quirky, self-deprecating videos before. In an outtake tacked on to the end of this video, Alonso says “Oh Tim, I’m so glad you didn’t suck.” Donnelly’s candidacy has also received the endorsement of lifelong Democrat and SNL alum Rob “Duece Bigalow” Schneider because of his pro-business platform.

The video also contains a sequence where Alonso registers strong opposition to the candidate’s pro-hunting views, a note of disagreeement that is probably a first for a campaign commercial.

Donnelly also famously saved a choking woman’s life with the Heimlich maneuver during a campaign appearance.

Alonso, who apparently supports Donnelly’s anti-illegal immigration views, was scheduled to perform in a Spanish-language version of The Vagina Monologues in February at the Brava Theater Center in San Francisco’s Mission District, but a political backlash ended that for her. Apparently some of her vulgar language in the ad turned people off, too.

Producer Eliana Lopez told the local CBS News affiliate that “We really cannot have her in the show, unfortunately. Of course she has the right to say whatever she wants. But we’re in the middle of the Mission. Doing what she is doing is against what we believe.” Added Jim Salinas, a local Democrat official: “We don’t act like that. First of all, that is not a typical Latina.” But prominent San Francisco Latino Republican Leo Lacayo countered that “It was a political ad, it was a funny ad. That anybody would lose employment over what their political leanings are is absurd.”

Alonso suggested on FNC that she dropped out because protests/boycotts in connection with her continued participation in the show would have been unfair to the other actors.

Alonso’s views on the immigration issue, Fox News Latino reported, were expressed in an email to the La Opinion newspaper: “I am among those who think that we should help illegal immigrants who are already in the country and who do not have a criminal background, who contribute and who are good people, but those who are not, we need to take out. I spoke with Tim about this issue and he agrees with me.”

Regardless of whether this particular campaign commercial is bad/tacky or not, much has been written about the reverse McCarthyism or a reverse blacklist in show business, i.e., how publicly differing with the Democrat Party agenda in overwhelmingly liberal Hollywood and elsewhere is a career-killer for those who lean conservative or libertarian in the entertainment industry both in front and behind the camera/stage. Actor James Woods, as one example, announced on his Twitter feed that he may not get any further gigs in the movies because of his outspoken Obama criticism.

As a slight digression, in a blog post about alleged gender discrimination against female movie directors, German-born former stuntwoman and now director Lexi Alexander wrote that “Women in Hollywood have no male allies. There are some who pretend to be on our side…but yeah, not really. They may say the right thing because after all, they’re liberals and that’s a public image they’d like to keep. Others may actually believe in gender equality, but are not willing to put up a fight for it that could sacrifice their own status or relationships.”

As far as the Alonso-Donnelly commercial is concerned, in our diverse, pluralistic society, it seems odd that any particular demographic group should be expected to hold a monolithic view on a particular political or social issue or that anybody would be denied a job based on their political leanings.

Maria Conchita Alonso talks more about her exit from The Vagina Monologues after endorsing Tim Donnelly for California governor in this FNC interview:
