Claudine Barretto Wants to Reconcile with Raymart Santiago

Claudine Barretto Wants to Reconcile with Raymart Santiago

Troubled actress Claudine Barretto expressed willingness to patch things up with estranged husband Raymart Santiago for the new year.

According to Claudine's legal counsel, Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, his client is not closing doors on a possible reconciliation.

"She's a very forgiving person, pero in time. We are never closing a door for a settlement. Sabi nga sa bibliya, lahat ay may panahon," he said.

Last August, Claudine filed an Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children (VAWC) case against her estranged husband, Raymart Santiago, detailing "physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse."

Raymart, in his counter-affidavit, accused his wife of domestic violence, stemming from a history of drug abuse and mental illness.

Angel Locsin Feels Sorry for Maja Salvador

Angel Locsin Feels Sorry for Maja Salvador

Angel Locsin and Maja Salvador are both thrilled with how their slapping scene in “The Legal Wife” trailer became a hot topic among TV viewers and netizens. However, Angel confessed that it was difficult for her to do it.

Slapping Maja, whom I consider like my little sister, was not as easy as it looked like on screen. Actually, I really avoid having scenes like that because I don’t want to hurt my co-actors,” said Angel, who will play the role of Monica in the story, the wife of Adrian (to be played by Jericho Rosales).

Just like the viewers who felt the ‘power slap’ of Angel, Maja strongly feels that the brave, real-life plot of “The Legal Wife” will get primetime viewers hooked every night.

My character and Angel, Jericho, JC’s (de Vera) all have their life battles. And I think every viewer can connect to any of them. Because in real-life, we all experience love, pain and fighting back,” said Maja, who will give life to the character of Nicole.

“The Legal Wife” gathers some of the country’s best drama actors including Joem Bascon, Ahron Villena, Rio Locsin, Mark Gil, and Christopher de Leon. It is under the direction of Rory Quintos and Dado Lumibao.

Don’t miss the beginning of “The Legal Wife” this January on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida.

Kuya Kim kicks off the Chinese New Year countdown with trivia and feng shui readings for the year of the wooden horse tomorrow (January 11) in “Matanglawin.”

Will you be lucky this year and what are the unlucky habits that you should forego? According to feng shui expert Marites Allen, the year of the horse will be good for business and love, but warns those born under the year of the rat, dog and boar to be extra cautious.

Allen also looks into the forecasts of Kapamilya stars Judy Ann Santos and Andi Eigenmann, and predicts luck in the life of the “young wood horse” Kim Chiu.

Meanwhile, Tart Carlos and Vivieka Ravanes a.k.a Doris and Sabel of “Be Careful With My Heart” also join Kuya Kim and will train to be horse caretakers at a farm called El Kabayo. Would they be able to woo their horses, Buddy and Megan, into obeying? Or will they need help from 12-year-old equestrienne Yana Agustin and her friends?

Cheche Lazaro Reports Philippines Vulnerability to Climate Change and Natural Disasters

Cheche Lazaro Reports Philippines Vulnerability to Climate Change and Natural Disasters

Broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro probes the vulnerability of the Philippines to climate change and natural disasters in “Cheche Lazaro Presents: Panahon Na” this Sunday (January 12).

When typhoon Ondoy flooded Metro Manila and neighboring provinces in 2009, people were caught off-guard by what officials called a ‘storm in a hundred years.’ But within a span of a week, typhoon Pepeng lashed at the northern part of Luzon. The succeeding extreme weather events, not to mention flood-inducing monsoons, just became more intense – Sendong in 2011, Pablo in 2012, and the world’s strongest tropical storm Yolanda just last November.

Because of climate change, weather experts and scientists warn of more apocalyptic disasters that will hit the country similar to typhoon Yolanda. They also claim that the Philippines, the third most vulnerable country to climate change, is more likely to experience the wrath of Mother Earth than any other country in the world.

Cheche interviews scientists, experts, and disaster-reduction managers in the two-hour documentary to identify, assess, and explain the vulnerabilities of various areas in the country. They also discuss what Filipinos can do to prepare and lessen the consequences of climate change.

Don’t miss the initial offering of “Cheche Lazaro Presents” in 2014 this Sunday (January 12), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

Anne Curtis Answers Questions On Plastic Surgery, Alcohol Abuse, Diet Juice and Dyesebel

Anne Curtis Answers Questions On Plastic Surgery, Alcohol Abuse, Diet Juice and Dyesebel

Anne Curtis faced and answered daring and intriguing questions from some members of the entertainment press on Thursday during her launch as the lead star of the remake of the iconic mermaid character "Dyesebel" created by "komiks" novelist Mars Ravelo.

Q: Wala ka bang idea na ikaw si Dyesebel? Ano ang feeling mo that time? Akala mo ba papagalitan ka?

Anne: "Wala talaga akong alam kasi nga galing sa bakasyon. Meeting lang daw but it didn't cross my mind na Dyesebel [ako]."

Q: Bakit ka umiyak kanina?

Anne: "Same feeling, overwhelmed kasi it's my first appearance after everything, overwhleming lang. It gives me tears of joy na 2014 pala is a great year. It's a great way na masimulan mo ang 2014 na ikaw si Dyesebel."

Q: Was 2013 a learning year for you?

Anne: "Yes, definitely."

Anne: "Opo."

Q: Naga-alak ka pa 'di ba, nag-e-endorse ka pa?

Anne: "Opo."

Q: Nagju-juice ka pa rin?

Anne: "Opo."

Q: Willing ka ba to sacrifice ang ibang project mo for Dyesebel?

Anne: "If kayang pagsabayin ay kakayanin. Kung gusto mo naman ang isang bagay and you love what you do,  kakayanin naman 'yon."

Q: Wala ka bang ipapagawa sa katawan mo kasi nga ikaw si Dyesebel?

Anne: "Parang hindi ko naman po kayang magpagawa."

Q: Wala ka pang pinagawa diyan sa katawan mo?

Anne: "No. Siguro mahirap magpagawa lalo na at laki ka sa industriya because all eyes are on you. Lahat ng pictures mo mula nang bata ka, nandoon ang ebidensiya. So never po ako magpapagawa kasi mahahalata."

Sa ups and downs, you guys have been there for me so maraming, maraming salamat. For 2014, I promise to do my best to be the best Dyesebel for you."

On Twitter, Curtis said she is happy to be facing a new challenge in her life this year. -

Lea Michele has released the official music video for her debut single “Cannonball” off of her debut album Louder.

Watch below:

Break down
Break down
Break down

I was scared to death I was losing my mind
Break down
I couldn’t close my eyes I was pacing all night
I think I found the light out the end of the tunnel
I couldn’t find the truth I was going under

But I won’t hide inside
I gotta get out, gotta get out
Gotta get out, gotta get out
Lonely inside and light the fuse
Light it now, light it now, light it now

And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I’ll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I’ll fly, I’ll fly, I’ll fly like a cannonball

I let go of fear and the peace came quickly
I was in the dark and then it hit me
I chose suffering and pain in the falling rain
I know, I gotta get out into the world again

But I won’t hide inside
I gotta get out, gotta get out
Gotta get out, gotta get out
Lonely inside and light the fuse
Light it now, light it now, light it now

And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I’ll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I’ll fly, I’ll fly, I’ll fly like a cannonball

Break down
I was scared to death I was losing my mind
Break down
I gotta get out into the world again

And now I will start living today
Today, today I close the door
I got this new beginning and I will fly
I’ll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I’ll fly, I’ll fly, I’ll fly like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
Like a cannonball
I’ll fly, I’ll fly, I’ll fly like a cannonball

Robert De Niro Returns to Boxing in “Grudge Match”

Robert De Niro Returns to Boxing in “Grudge Match”

In 1980, he won the Oscar® as Best Actor for his extraordinary portrayal of boxer Jake La Motta in Martin Scorsese’s “Raging Bull.” Thirty-four years later, Robert De Niro puts on the boxing gloves again for Warner Bros. Pictures’ new comedy, “Grudge Match.”

In the film, Billy “The Kid” McDonnen (De Niro) and Henry “Razor” Sharp (Sylvester Stallone) are two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, a boxing promoter seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to re-enter the ring and settle the score once and for all.

Often when you make a movie, there are many actors that would be great in a part,” says producer Michael Ewing. “In this case, it had to be Sylvester Stallone and it had to be Robert De Niro, or the movie was just not going to happen.”

Producer Mark Steven Johnson, a longtime friend of screenwriter Tim Kelleher’s who had talked about the idea with the writer previously, was working on another film with De Niro and mentioned the premise to him. “He thought it sounded really funny and he wanted to read it. I knew [director] Peter Segal wanted to make a sports comedy that also had real drama, about how you’re never too old to do the things you were passionate about when you were young.”

De Niro honed in on the idea of second chances, but, he says, “It’s not a second chance for a guy who’s down and out trying to make a comeback. It’s really about getting what he’s always wanted, what he’s waited years for. But along the way he sees there’s a lot more to it than he was even aware of.

While Razor wishes the renewed interest in what happened three decades ago would just go away, “The Kid” relishes the new-found attention. The spotlight-loving Kid continued to box after the cancelled bout with Razor, but after 11 fights, his career sputtered out. He parlayed his celebrity into being a moderately successful pitchman for everything from Jockey® to jock itch. He invested his money in some local Pittsburgh businesses and continued to obsess about “the fight that never happened and never will.”

De Niro states, “These two guys are in really different places in life. My character’s done alright for himself, financially, but he still has this unfulfilled yearning to have this final fight, because he felt that he was kind of gypped the last time when Razor pulled out of it. Razor’s the one that needs it, for the money, but Kid’s the one that really wants it.

I think Kid really sees this as the moment of truth,” De Niro concludes.

Opening across the Philippines in January 15, 2014, “Grudge Match” will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Niagara Falls Partially Frozen

Niagara Falls Partially Frozen

Niagara Falls has frozen amid a polar vortex that left the Midwest buried under snow and ice. Although the weather is not ideal, tourists are still flocking to the iconic landmark because the ice surrounding the falls is an unusual and beautiful sight.

A polar vortex is caused by slowing of the jet stream. In its usual position, the stream prevents arctic air from traveling south. However, as the jet stream slows down, its path is altered. Within the last week, arctic air moved into the Midwest United States, bringing dangerously low temperatures and wind chill factors.

As a result, much of the region is now covered in ice, and Niagara Falls is no exception. Although water is still flowing through portions of the falls, much of the surrounding landscape is frozen. The slower water is covered in a sheet of ice and huge icicles frame the falls.

Niagara Falls consists of three waterfalls, which are located between the United States and Canada along the Niagara River. The falls include the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Canadian Falls. Although subzero temperatures have frozen portions of the falls, they have never completely stopped.

During the coldest winters, deep freezes cause an “ice bridge” to form across the river. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, tourists were allowed to walk along the ice bridge. However, in 1912, three tourists lost their lives when the ice bridge collapsed, and tourists are no longer permitted to walk across the ice.

Niagara Falls Live reports the total length of the falls is 1060 feet, and the highest fall is 176 feet. An estimated 150,000 gallons of water crosses the falls every second. Although the volume may be impeded by the ice, the water is currently flowing.

Peak tourist season is usually between June and August. However, many tourists enjoy viewing and photographing Niagara Falls in the winter months, when one of nature’s magnificent spectacles can be seen in all of its frozen glory. -

Anne Curtis Reacts on Her "Darna" Role

Anne Curtis Reacts on Her "Darna" Role

Anne Curtis was in tears on Thursday, January 9, during a press conference announcing her as the latest actress to portray "Dyesebel," the iconic mermaid character created by "komiks" novelist Mars Ravelo.

Coming from what she referred to as a "tough year," the 28-year-old actress turned emotional when asked how she reacted to being given the role, which she only learned of Wednesday.

"It's overwhelming na pagkabalik po... I mean, 2013 was a tough year, it was really tough, so to come back this year and know that merong something na maganda mangyayari, [it's overwhelming]," Anne said, her voice breaking.

Shortly before the press conference, Anne sat down with ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual for a one-on-one interview, where she discussed the "dream role," taking on another mermaid character in "Dyosa" in 2008, and her commitment to being "the best Dyesebel yet."

Dumaual: Can you describe your emotion that finally, you're portraying Dyesebel?

Curtis: Sa ngayon, napaka-overwhelming and sobrang a great way to start 2014. Kakabalik ko lang and napakaganda na news na dumating sa akin. As in, this such a blessing talaga for me. Sobra lang akong excited. I can't even express sa words kung ano 'yung nararamdaman ko sa sobrang saya ko.

D: Sino ang mga gusto mong pasalamatan?

C: Well, of course, ABS-CBN. For people who... You know, 'yung Twitter account ko, the feed has been coming in. And even while I was in Canada (for vacation), wala akong kaalam-alam kasi, so parang you just read it, "Ah, kasama siguro ako sa mga nababanggit." So to find out when I got back... Wow, maraming salamat sa lahat ng ating mga followers and sa ating mga kababayan diyan who still have faith in me, thank you.

D: Sa resulta ng market research, namumukod-tangi ang pangalan mo. Ikaw talaga ang lumalabas na Dyesebel.

C: Wow naman. 'Yun na nga... Speechless. Sobrang salamat, thank you. Thank you for having that kind of faith in me and seeing me as your Dyesebel. (laughs) That sounds so weird coming from my mouth!

D: You're very emotional about this.

C: Yeah! This is a major project and I think every girl's dream since you're a little girl is to become a mermaid. And "Dyesebel," kahit bago pa mag-"Dyosa" po, "Dyesebel" ay sobrang pangarap ko na. Binabanggit ko na 'yan sa lahat ng mga interviews ko. Sabi ko, "Dream role? Dyesebel!" Pero imposible sa before eh! Biniyayaan naman ako ng "Dyosa" before, tapos ngayon naman pag banggit na "Dyesebel," wow! It's another dream come true.

D: Paano mo tinanggap noong unang sinabi sa'yo? What exactly was your emotion?

C: Shocked! As in, gulat po kasi, "Totoo ba 'to?" It was instantly talaga, "Yes! Opo! Of course!" 'Diba, sino ba namang hihindi na maging Dyesebel?

D: Ano 'yung kahulugan nito sa iyo ngayon, especially at this time, the start of the new year?

C: You know, it just goes to show na talagang ang 2014 is a time to start anew, it's a time to be happy, it's a time to accept lahat ng mga positive things that come into your life. And I'm just so thankful. Thank you so much talaga sa ABS-CBN for giving that kind of trust in me, at sa ating mga kababayan na ang tingin sa akin ay isang Dyesebel. Maraming, maraming salamat. It's so overwhelming!

D: It's an emotionally and physically taxing role. Handa ka na ba sa pagsisid?

C: I'm ready to swim! Sobra akong handa. It's every girl's dream, and kung nag-i-enjoy ko naman sa isang bagay, hindi naman iyon nakakapagod eh, kasi nag-i-enjoy ka. And I have a feeling, walang kapaguran 'to kasi ini-enjoy mo 'yung ginagaw mo eh.

D: Since this is your priority right now, may adjustments ba tayo sa "It's Showtime"?

Kristen Wiig Inspires in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”

Kristen Wiig Inspires in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”

The immensely talented Kristen Wiig stars opposite Ben Stiller in “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” where Stiller plays the titular character about a modern daydreamer inspired to live out his dreams to save not just his job but that of the woman whom he secretly cares for.

Mitty is an ordinary magazine photo editor who takes a regular mental vacation from his ho-hum existence by disappearing into a world of fantasies electrified by dashing heroism, passionate romance and constant triumphs over danger.  But when Mitty and the co-worker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig) whom he secretly adores stand in actual peril of losing their jobs, Walter must do the unimaginable:  take real action – sparking a global journey more extraordinary than anything he could have ever dreamed up.

Stiller saw Wiig’s role not just as a comic relief, but a major catalyst for Mitty’s journey.  “It is Walter’s tenuous connection with Cheryl that becomes the impetus pushing him out into the world,” he explains.  As such, it demanded someone who could leap from the everyday world of a single mom in fear of losing her job into the high-wire drama of Walter’s daydreams and back again, without ever losing a beat, or the core of who Cheryl is.  To do all this, while also creating the snowballing effect of a relationship in its first throes of attraction, the filmmakers cast one of today’s most intriguing comediennes:  Kristen Wiig.
Stiller had her in mind from the get-go.  “Kristen is someone who is so, so relatable,” he comments.  “She’s so real, and so naturally funny, and I also really wanted to see her doing something like this – something that’s not quite the broad, crazy comedy we’re used to.  Her personality is so likeable and warm, I felt she could instantly give the audience a shorthand as to why she and Mitty might actually belong together.”
He continues:  “Kristen is also terrific at playing many different attitudes and characters. She was able to juxtapose that kind of comedy with Cheryl’s very real personality where she’s just a little bit intrigued by Walter. I think her character gets to something that audiences really connect with:  the idea of that some of the littlest things that happen to us in life –even just saying hello to somebody when they give you a certain look –can affect us in big ways.”
She goes on:  “It’s one of those stories that leaves you feeling like there’s a great big, world for you out there – and that if there are things in life we really want to do, whether it’s connect with our families or travel the globe, it’s worth trying to go out and do them.”

It was easy for Wiig to see why Cheryl might have just the tiniest twinges of interest in Walter that blossom into something more as they embark together on solving the mystery of the lost negative.  “I think she likes that he leads a quieter kind of life and that he also kind of sees something better out there,” she explains.“They both are leading lives that maybe they wish were a little spicier, so it’s perfect that they end up going on this unexpected adventure together.”
Wiig especially enjoyed bursting into Mitty’s daydreams, with Cheryl appearing in numerous thrilling scenarios that took Wiig to new places., including performing a one-woman Bowie song.  “I loved doing the fantasy sequences,” she says. “In one of Walter’s first fantasies, he runs into a burning building and saves my three-legged dog.  I’d never been in a scene like that before –one involving big explosions and fires -- and it was really exciting for me as an actor.
Stiller’s visual aplomb amazed Wiig as well. “The look of the movie is so very specific and beautiful, which is part of what makes it so special. Ben had a vision for every single shot, every frame,” she says.
Wiig was especially impressed by what Stiller brought to Mitty. “His Walter Mitty is a guy who really does have a voice -- he just doesn’t quite know how to use it yet. Ben brings so much warmth to the character that you just want to hug him and beat up everybody who’s mean to him.”

“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” opens this January 22 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Kiera Knightley and Chris Pine Topbill “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”

Kiera Knightley and Chris Pine Topbill “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit”

When the opportunity to work with director Kenneth Branagh on Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit came along, Keira Knightley jumped at it. The actress had wanted to work with Branagh for years - indeed, she points out that one of his earlier films, Much Ado About Nothing, inspired her to take up acting in the first place.

But there was another reason why Jack Ryan appealed, too. Quite simply, she wanted to have some fun after years of playing a series of heavy duty roles in films like Anna Karenina, A Dangerous Method and Never Let Me Go.

“For a couple of years now I’ve wanted to do either something that is complete popcorn or something that is incredibly positive because I got to the end of about five or six years work having died in pretty much everything,” she laughs.

“Everything was doom and gloom and I just wanted to lighten it up a bit so this was part of it. This is my popcorn, very Hollywood thriller that I wanted to do for fun, that sort of thing.

“And it ticked all of those boxes and it’s the first time I’ve been anywhere near anything with a larger budget since the last Pirates of the Caribbean film, which was about seven or eight years ago, so it was dipping my toe back in that water.

“But the main reason was really Ken because I was really interested to see what it was like being directed by an actor when he was acting in the scenes as well. I was fascinated to watch his process. So the main thing was Ken for me.”

As well as directing, Branagh also stars in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, as Russian oligarch, Viktor Cherevin, who plots to cause havoc on the world’s stock markets. Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) is a newly recruited CIA analyst who discovers Cherevin’s plan to wreck the US economy and Ms. Knightley plays Cathy, his fiancée.

Ms. Knightley revealed that her links to Branagh the filmmaker go back a long way. She first auditioned for him when she was a young girl, just making her way as an actress, and always remembered the kindness he showed her back then.

“I met him once when I was about 11 years old and I went up for Hamlet and I remember him being absolutely lovely to me. I remember knowing that I hadn’t got the job,” she says.

“It was for one of the Players in his film version of Hamlet and I knew I hadn’t got the job pretty much from the get go but he still took the time to show me models of all the sets and he was absolutely lovely to me and he sat there and talked about what he was going to do.

“And I remember appreciating the fact that he had taken the time out, even though it was pretty clear I wasn’t going to get the job, to sit there with an 11 year old and have a talk with her and treat her like a human being.

“I’ve been a huge fan of his because one of the films I got obsessed by when I was growing up was Much Ado About Nothing. It’s a great version and I used to know it off by heart – I wish I still did because that might be quite helpful one day but I don’t.

“I watched it until my video copy of it broke – I watched it that often. I completely fell in love with it and for me that film was such a huge part of me wanting to become an actress. He was always somebody I had wanted to work with because how can you not when he has created a film that you love so much.”

On set, Branagh switched effortlessly between his dual roles behind and in front of the camera, she says.

“It’s absolutely fascinating but really strange particularly when you are doing a scene with him because he will be going from Russian baddie kind of psychopath and then he’ll suddenly switch off and be like ‘oh OK, ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much and that’s a cut..’ and being this really polite, quiet sort of contained director.

“And then on the other side he’s the actor, too. And a lot of times when you are working you need to create energy so there is quite a lot of banter that can happen between actors and so he’ll go in for that, too.

“So there will be the actor banter just before a take and then he’ll go into playing the psychopath and then he will switch back to the director and you are watching it going, ‘wow!’ It takes a lot of energy to do that, it’s quite extraordinary.

“And he has a guy who helps him, Jimmy, who keeps an eye on all the actors, including him, and he is someone that you can go and talk to, and he talks to, and so he has that extra pair of eyes. He is fascinating to work with.”

Ms Knightley has always loved well-scripted, intelligent thrillers and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit has all the hallmarks of the genre and fits the bill perfectly, she says.

“I’ve always loved thrillers and I love the challenge of a thriller because they need a good storyteller to make them. And there are very few thrillers made nowadays unfortunately.

“If you look back to the 80s and 90s thrillers were all the rage and we really don’t make that many of them anymore so I was really excited to try that with Jack Ryan.

“And you need a director who is a really good storyteller to make them and so I was very excited to try it out and the fact that Ken was directing meant that I knew it was in very good hands.”

Branagh has won huge acclaim for directing and appearing in many of Shakespeare’s plays on both stage and screen. But, as Ms. Knightley points out, he also loves contemporary stories and has directed thrillers like Dead Again and blockbusters like Thor.

“And this is a Hollywood thriller – there was no pretending that we were doing Shakespeare, we all knew exactly what we were doing and he was very clear about it,” she says.

“And there was no guilt or going, ‘this should be something different.’ It was like, ‘we are trying to make the best kind of Hollywood thriller that we can possibly make. That’s what we are trying to do so let’s do it…’ And I really like that.

“I like the lack of pretence and the clarity of that. I was hugely impressed by Ken. And what I love about him is the acts that his career has had. To be this guy that directed Thor and now Jack Ryan and Cinderella next, the same guy that did all the Shakespeare, a man who is generally regarded as one of the best stage actors of our time.

“He has done a phenomenal amount and his career has had really interesting chapters and I think that’s always great for any actor to see – that there are all these different avenues that you can explore and there are different stages in your career.

Ms. Knightley also enjoyed working with Chris Pine who plays Jack Ryan. Her character, Cathy, doesn’t know that her fiancée has been recruited into the CIA – a corrosive secret in their relationship.

“I think from my character’s perspective the story is about what happens to your relationship when you are with somebody who is keeping a secret. Cathy doesn’t know what the secret Jack is keeping is but of course the audience will know that he is a CIA officer and he can’t tell anybody.

“Jack and Cathy aren’t married yet so he can’t tell her but she knows that something is going on and so her mind goes to all sorts of different places and it’s about the pressure that is put on that relationship by that secret.

“And I thought that was very interesting because it would put pressure on if you don’t even know what your partner is doing and also, if she does find out, she hasn’t chosen that life for herself and obviously it’s a dangerous life.

“So she is with somebody who has brought a lot of baggage to their relationship and that can be very corrosive. And what that does to a person and a relationship I thought was very interesting. And in a broader sense, this film is an origins story and although it’s an original script, it’s drawn from the books as far as the history of Jack and Cathy goes.”

The daughter of actor Will Knightley and playwright Sharman Macdonald, Ms. Knightley was born in London and made her professional acting debut in 1993 in the British TV series, Screen One.

Keira Knightley earned Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominations for her portrayal of Elizabeth Bennet in Joe Wright’s version of Pride & Prejudice, based on Jane Austen’s novel, also for Focus Features and Working Title Films. Two years later, she was a Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominee for her performance as Cecilia Tallis in Atonement, again directed by Joe Wright and for Focus and Working Title, based on the novel by Ian McEwan. In November 2012, she stars in the title role of Anna Karenina, reuniting with Mr. Wright and Focus, based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy and adapted by Academy Award winner Tom Stoppard.

Released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corp., “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” opens in theaters nationwide on January 15, 2014.
