Can "Darna: The Movie" Helps Angel Locsin Reclaim Stardom?

Can "Darna: The Movie" Helps Angel Locsin Reclaim Stardom?

Finally, Angel Locsin’s career seems ready to soar high once more as she will be flying again as ‘Darna’ in a movie that is set to come out early 2014.

The Superheroine character that made her into a showbiz personality she is today will be having a grand comeback in the Philippines’ air. This time on big screen.

When Star Cinema executive Malou Santos revealed that Locsin will be playing ‘Darna’ in a movie, her fans couldn’t help but be excited for the actress, who seems to have been (somehow) seated for a long time on a bench now. Though she has been doing a regular Saturday show, “Toda Max” for two years already, and has had a few movies last year, it is important to note that the star in Locsin was not as bright as that of other Kapamilya top stars who almost have no time for rest as TV series, shows, and movies come one after the other, if not almost overlapping.

Locsin lost the Superstar status along with the crown she’s been wearing on her head when she was still on GMA 7 as their prime time queen. On ABS-CBN, Locsin has always been fighting for a top spot or at least a share on spotlight, after being given two hit TV series with the network’s top leading men, Piolo Pascual and John Lloyd Cruz. A sacrifice that she had to make in order to broaden her audience and snatch the top acting awards she has now on her shelves. Continue reading HERE.

Love, Lives and Struggles of Homosexuals Probe This Sunday on ABS-CBN

Love, Lives and Struggles of Homosexuals Probe This Sunday on ABS-CBN

“Cheche Lazaro Presents” takes a deeper look into the world of lesbians, gays, transgender and bisexuals (LGBT) and their struggle for acceptance this Sunday (October 13) in time with the internationally observed “National Coming Out Day” this October.

In 2005, a study of two nationwide surveys showed that one in every four Filipinos would not want to have lesbians and gay men as neighbors. The following year, 2006, and three years later, 2009, a government institution gave flesh to the negative attitude of many Filipinos towards gay community. The Commission on Elections shut the door on the LGBT community by denying party-list group Ladlad’s application for accreditation Ladlad twice.

The COMELEC explained that Ladlad was disqualified to run for 2007 elections because it failed to prove its nationwide membership, while its petition for 2010 elections was junked on grounds of morality.

The Supreme Court, however, intervened and gave Ladlad the go-signal to join the 2010 elections but the LGBT political party, whose advocacy equal rights among all Filipinos, failed to make it.

Over the years, the Filipino’s perception of the gay community has found expression in a number of ways – discrimination in terms of employment, bullying in schools, harassment in work places, and in some cases, grisly murders. Yet, despite the risks, a number of personalities have come out of the closet to be counted as part of a “growing” community in search of their own truths after years of living a lie.

Veteran broadcast journalist Cheche Lazaro tackles homosexuality and its forms in a two-hour documentary that weaves the points of view of people with same-sex attraction, their families, and the sectors that either support or reject them.

Former child star and singer Aiza Seguerra talks about her journey of acceptance, while comedian Ogie Diaz gives a peek into his 13-year blissful marriage that has produced four daughters.

A woman also narrates how science has transformed her to a man, while her conservative father looks back at how their family dealt with the situation. The story of a bisexual waiting for her ordination as a pastor will also be shown. A married lesbian couple on the other hand, shares their views about love and family, while eight old gay men tell their tales of joys and pains of being different.

Joining them are experts from various fields – a psychologist, geneticist, sex realignment doctor, human rights activist and priests. They all provide the context to a comprehensive and poignant story of a societal taboo in the midst of our changing times.

Don’t miss “Cheche Lazaro Presents” this Sunday (October 13), after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN’s Sunday’s Best.

“Angry Birds” Movie Update

“Angry Birds” Movie Update

Rovio Entertainment announced today that Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis will direct “Angry Birds,” the upcoming 3D CG-animated film based on Rovio’s bestselling app. The film is being produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder and executive produced by David Maisel; the screenplay is by Jon Vitti. The movie is slated for a July 1, 2016 release and will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures (including the Philippines).

Reilly and Kaytis are both animation veterans, making their directorial debuts with “Angry Birds.” Kaytis began his career as an animator at Walt Disney Animation Studios. In his 19 years at Disney, he served as animation supervisor of “Tangled” and the follow-up short, “Tangled Ever After.” He also conceived and oversaw the end credits sequence of “Wreck-It Ralph” and animated on that film; in addition, he was the supervising animator of the character Rhino in “Bolt.” Kaytis also animated on the upcoming film “Frozen” and the Oscar®-winning short, “Paperman.”

Reilly joined Sony Pictures Animation in 2003 as a storyboard artist, contributing to the films “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” “Hotel Transylvania” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.” He was a director and Head of Story on several development projects at Sony Pictures Animation. Previously, Reilly was a storyboard artist on films including “Spider-Man 2” and “The Iron Giant.”

Commenting on the announcement, Rovio Entertainment CEO Mikael Hed said, “I’m very excited that Fergal and Clay have joined us, bringing with them their vast expertise. They are two of the brightest rising talents in animation, and I’m confident we are building the right team to tell the story of `Angry Birds' and deliver an amazing movie experience to our fans.”

Producer John Cohen commented: “David, Catherine and I are thrilled to welcome Fergal and Clay to the “Angry Birds” filmmaking team. They both have an extraordinary range of talents, and we’re looking forward to working with them to bring the birds and pigs to life on the big screen.”

“Angry Birds” is one of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises, starting in 2009 with the original mobile game that remains the number one paid app of all time. “Angry Birds” has expanded rapidly into entertainment, publishing, and licensing to become a beloved international brand.

The upcoming movie marks Rovio’s first foray into feature films, although fans have already been introduced to the Angry Birds world with the weekly “Angry Birds Toons” animated series. Rovio launched the series in March through its Angry Birds apps, as well as on select video-on-demand channel providers, Smart TVs, connected devices, and on select TV networks around the world. Paving the way for a full-length feature film, “Angry Birds Toons” has been a massive success for Rovio and has surpassed more than 1,000,000,000 views in its first seven months. In addition, Rovio successfully launched a sequel in the “Angry Birds Star Wars” saga in September accompanied with Hasbro’s Telepod toys. The game immediately topped app store charts in over 100 countries.

Miss World 2013 Megan Young motorcades through Ayala Avenue in Makati City down to the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City to blow a kiss to fans and supporters who dismissed the rain-spawned by typhoon Santi on Friday, October 11, 2013.

Rather than fret about the inclement weather, Megan worried about the people who cheered on and welcomed her during her victory parade in Makati City on Friday, according to Cory Quirino, chair of Miss World Philippines.

She was worried they might get sick. But then she realized that they merely wanted to show how much they loved her,” Cory Quirino said.

Clad in a modern red terno that provided a cheerful contrast to the gray skies, Megan, escorted by a marching band, motorcycle cops and vintage cars, was stunned speechless by the warm welcome that defied the rains

She was surprised to see people standing on top of buildings along Ayala and showering her with confetti,” Quirino added. - entertainment.inquirer.net

Derek Ramsay Confirms Relationship with Ynna Asistio

Derek Ramsay Confirms Relationship with Ynna Asistio

Derek Ramsay finally speaks on the rumored relationship with Ynna Asistio.

Days after Derek confirmed his separation with the Kapamilya blockbuster actress Cristine Reyes, the Kapatid actor confirmed that he is already going out with another girl.

In a report by veteran showbiz columnist Veronica Samio as published today on Pilipino Star Ngayon, Derek narrated how the rumored date between him and the new Kapamilya star happened. He likewise mentioned that he's been friend's with the Asistio's for sometime already and that Ynna shouldn't be blame for his falling out with Cristine.

Samio's report reads:

Nasa isang supermarket sila at namimili.

I’ve been friends with the family, including the mom, Nadia Montenegro, for years now. It was not a date. Nakakahiya nga kay Ynna na napapagbintangan ng hindi totoo,” pagtatanggol ng actor sa sinasabing kaibigan lamang."

Claudine Barretto Strikes Back, Calls Gretchen "Crazy"

Claudine Barretto Strikes Back, Calls Gretchen "Crazy"

So much negative things have been said and written about her courtesy of her sisters Gretchen and Marjorie and for Claudine Barretto, enough is enough already.

"Nababaliw na yata siya." said the controversial actress answering questions about her Gretchen's alleged involvement in the theft charges filed against her by her former personal assistant Dessa Cadelario Patilan

Patilan, who was imprisoned in May following Claudine's own accusations of theft amounting to over P10-million, filed a counter-charge against Claudine on September 11 claiming damages amounting to over P100,000. These include the items supposedly stolen by Claudine - a wallet, an electronic tablet, a memory card and a sim card.

Claudine's legal counsel Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, on Thursday, October 10, raised several points questioning the motive of Patilan's filing of the theft complaint.

He emphasized that it was formalized four months after the same May incident cited by both camps in their respective sworn statements. Topacio also stressed the fact that Patilan is being represented by Atty. Alma Mallonga, who he accused of conspiring with Claudine's sister Gretchen.

"Alam naman natin ang istorya dito, 'di ba? Sinasagot lang naman namin [ang mga akusasyon ni Patilan]. Wala naman kasi talagang katotohanan eh. Kasi kung totoo 'yan, bakit ngayon lang? At saka bakit kung noong nabigyan lang siya ng abogado ni Gretchen, saka lang siya nag-file ng countercharge?" Topacio said.

"Inamin naman ni Atty. Mallonga eh. Hindi naman kami nagsabi noon eh, hindi naman haka-haka 'yun eh. Inamin naman nila, 'diba. Nagpa-interview sila. Sinabi niya na si Gretchen ang kumausap sa kanya para ibigay siya bilang abugado ni Dessa. And then after that, nag-file na ng countercharge. So alam na natin 'yon." Topacio continued. - ABS-CBNNews.com

Melai Cantiveros, John Prats, Deniesse Aguilar and Robi Domingo Put Celebrities in a Life-Threatening Situations

Melai Cantiveros, John Prats, Deniesse Aguilar and Robi Domingo Put Celebrities in a Life-Threatening Situations

ABS-CBN’s realiserye “I Dare You” will lead the journey towards change as it shows celebrities and extraordinary Filipinos teaming up to face real-life challenges in a more daring and inspiring second season, which premieres on Saturday (October 12) on ABS-CBN.

Hosted by John Prats, former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate Deniesse Aguilar, Robi Domingo, and Melai Cantiveros, “I Dare You” will test the spirit, determination, and partnership of the “Celebrity Kakampi” and “Bidang Kapamilya,” who will work together to accomplish tasks.

The Bidang Kapamilya are everyday Filipinos and unsung heroes who bravely confront tough challenges such as firemen, sports coaches, farmers, athletes, soldiers, traffic aides, teachers, and many others.

If Season 1 focused on the series of tasks celebrities had to go through to win a reward for the Bidang Kapamilya, Season 2 will highlight the participants’ life-changing journey to foster positive change for themselves, their families, and their communities.

John shared that in Season 2, he and his co-hosts immerse directly and extensively in the Bidang Kapamilya’s world and get to experience the same challenges the celebrities have to go through.

What’s good about this season is the immersion. We don’t just do something for a day, like sell something at a wet market, and that’s it. Now I understand other people’s lives better. I didn’t think I would be able to overcome what I did, but something was at stake, so I just did what I had to do. It feels good to be able to help others,” said John.

According to Robi, some celebrities even live and work with the Bidang Kapamilya for long periods, from five days to almost a month.

“‘Some celebrities don’t go home on a daily basis, and if they do, they come back to establish a connection, to relive the life of the Bidang Kapamilya. It’s reality at its finest,” he said.

He added, “In the program, we will show that you don’t have to be an Andres Bonifacio or a Jose Rizal to be a hero. We will showcase people who may be doing simple things but have a big impact on others, who don’t look for extravagance and credit. These stories are worth-sharing and inspiring.”

Hosting newbie Deniesse, meanwhile, is very excited or her first hosting project right after leaving the Big Brother house. She shared that aside from articulating spiels properly, she also learned how to mingle and relate to the Bidang Kapamilya.

This is a huge opportunity and break for me. I’m very thankful for this because it helped me grow as a host and as a person,” said Deniesse.

Deniesse also noted that while she and her co-hosts have different roles in the realiserye, she will act as the ‘kabarkada’ who will listen to the participants’ grievances and ease their burden.

Join John Prats, Deniesse Aguilar, Robi Domingo, and Melai Cantiveros as they showcase Filipinos who brave through life’s challenges in ABS-CBN’s newest realiserye “I Dare You,” which stars airing Saturday night (Oct 12) after “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” For updates, like facebook.com/IDAREYOUSEASON2 or follow ang @IDareYouS2 on Twitter and @idareyouofficial on Instagram.

Mo Twister Uncovers Richard Gutierrez's Manhood: "His d!@k is smaller than me!"

Mo Twister Uncovers Richard Gutierrez's Manhood: "His d!@k is smaller than me!"

In case you thought that DJ Mo Twister's controversial days are over, think again. Mo just revealed during the September 19 episode of his podcast Good Times With Mo that he had sex, "on several occasions" with JC de Vera's girlfriend. This girl and JC are reportedly no longer in a relationship but when Mo's intimate adventures happened a few years back, he confirmed that de Vera and his sex girlfriend were still together then.

DJ Suzy and Bianca Valerio were co-hosting that episode of the show with Mo Twister as they pitted the radio host against model and former MTV VJ Kat Alano. Both are competing for points depending on how they answer any of the 40 Forbidden Questions. Suzy threw the question: "Did you ever had sex with another celebrity's girlfriend while they are still together?" Mo replied, "Yes. Several times. On several occasions, I had sex with JC de Vera's girlfriend. That's why he doesn't like me so much."

Mo earned extra points for namedropping JC de Vera but he didn't mention which of de Vera's ex-girlfriends did he have some sexual encounters. De Vera had only been vocal about four celebrity ex-girlfriends, Michelle Madrigal, Sexbomb Aifa, and recently, Danita Paner. But if there's someone openly linked to both JC and Mo, that would be Rhian Ramos.

Another shocking revelation from Mo is about his suggestive remarks on Richard Gutierrez's rumored small manhood size. Suzy asked Mo if which guy would he choose to join him and a girl in a threesome, the radio DJ immediately mentioned Richard. "I need someone with a smaller dick than me," he said where Bianca Valerio remarked: "Parang David and Goliath ang dating ah." To testify this statement true, Kat shared how confident is her "close friend" Mo about his size. "He said it's about 6 or 6.5 inches. It's really a good number." Continue reading HERE.

Rhian Ramos and Aljur Abrenica Both Set to Compete in a Life-Threatening Competition this Weekend

Rhian Ramos and Aljur Abrenica Both Set to Compete in a Life-Threatening Competition this Weekend

Kapuso actress Rhian Ramos, during the press conference of her upcoming primetime series on GMA, "Genesis," shared how happy she is to be a part of the series, which began production barely a few months after her previous series “Indio” aired its grand finale.

"Every one on the set of ‘Genesis’ does his job really well. Every one is helping each other. ‘Pag nasa eksena ka, you feel that you are in a team," said Rhian.

Apart from working on the series, Rhian is also seriously preparing for a motor sports/car racing event on Saturday, October 12, at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.  It is organized by a popular automobile manufacturer. Aside from Rhian, kapuso hunk actor Aljur Abrenica is also joining the competition.

Rhian said she was drafted from around thirty celebrities who were given several tasks to complete during a press event. The final celebrity racers were selected by the organizers based on how they performed the tasks.

To prepare for the race, Rhian enrolled in a five-week course at a popular racing school. The actress said it is a requirement for the race. She said that all racers were required by the organizer to undergo at least five weeks of intensive training.

It is the first time for both Rhian and Aljur to join a car race although Rhian said that Aljur has tried motor races in the past.

The actress is not expecting to land first place but said she is hopeful that she won't end at the bottom.

The "Genesis" star is getting hooked on the sport and she feels that the October 12 race won't be her last.

Although the actress' boyfriend KC Montero is not so much into cars, Rhian divulged that she has influenced him to like motor sports.

Meanwhile, in “Genesis,” the actress portrays a physically abused wife who will eventually be saved by a long lost love – Isaac (Dingdong Dantes) – who is the real father of her child.

Rhian said in an interview with GMANetwork.com that she did a bit of research to prepare for her role in “Genesis.” She said she read articles and stories about women who experienced domestic violence.

Apart from Rhian and Dingdong, also starring in the series are Ms. Lorna Tolentino, TJ Trinidad, Jackie Lou Blanco, Irma Adlawan and Ronnie Henares. Completing the cast are Carlo Gonzales, Luanne Dy, Albert "Betong" Sumaya and child stars Sasha Baldoza, Rainier Gisin and Anette Samin.

Directed by Bb. Joyce Bernal and Mark Reyes, "Genesis" will air its pilot episode on Monday, October 14 on GMA Telebabad.

“Gravity” Rakes $100-M Worldwide Box-Office Sales in Just 5 Days

“Gravity” Rakes $100-M Worldwide Box-Office Sales in Just 5 Days

Only five days after its record-breaking launch, Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Gravity” has flown past $100 million at the worldwide box office. The film has earned an estimated $68.5 million domestically and $35.8 internationally for a global total to date of $104.3 million. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Following weeks of enthusiastic critical acclaim and huge anticipation from moviegoers, the Alfonso Cuarón-directed dramatic thriller exceeded all expectations on its opening weekend. Taking in $55.8 million domestically, “Gravity” broke a number of box office records, including those for the biggest October opening for any film, the largest IMAX opening in October ($11.8 million), and the highest opening weekend ever for stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

In the Philippines, “Gravity” has grossed an outstanding P41.4-million as of October 9, and still climbing.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “We are all thrilled by this start - from the tremendous critical acclaim to the fantastic response from audiences. Alfonso Cuarón and his brilliant collaborators crafted a groundbreaking film that succeeds on every level, both creatively and commercially. Word of mouth has been amazing and we expect it only to grow, keeping ‘Gravity’ strong at the box office in the weeks and months ahead.

Kwan Vandenberg noted, “‘Gravity’ is a riveting and relatable human drama that has struck a chord with moviegoers in countries around the globe. We are excited by these numbers and know this is just the beginning, with much-anticipated openings coming up in major markets such as the UK, France, Japan, Korea, Brazil and Mexico.”

Sue Kroll, Warner Bros. Pictures President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, said, “The buzz on ‘Gravity’ began building when we unveiled the film at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals. Critical raves and screening audience reactions reinforced what we already knew - that the combination of thrilling drama, breathtaking visuals, and powerful performances made this a film that had to be experienced on the big screen.” President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman added, “Sue and I join everyone at Warner Bros. in congratulating Alfonso Cuarón, producer David Heyman, screenwriter Jonás Cuarón, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, and all the other talented artists who worked to make ‘Gravity’ an unequivocal cinematic achievement.”

In “Gravity,” Dr. Ryan Stone (Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (Clooney) in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.

But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

Now playing across the Philippines in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D, 2D and regular theatres, “Gravity” is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company.

Tom Hanks Plays Real-Life “Captain Phillips” in Gripping Hostage Thriller Movie

Tom Hanks Plays Real-Life “Captain Phillips” in Gripping Hostage Thriller Movie

Tom Hanks plays the titular, true-to-life character in Columbia Pictures' “Captain Phillips,” a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates.

The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage.

The audience will not find conventional heroes in “Captain Phillips” - only human beings in all their societal, cultural, and personal complexities. Director Paul Greengrass saw Richard Phillips not as the engine of the story but rather as a man who, while quietly devoted to his work, gets suddenly swept up into a violent, global event.

Phillips reminds me of men I knew when I was young, growing up with a father in the merchant marine: the working men who haul the goods we use around the world, who are the lifeblood of the world economy,” Greengrass says. “They are the truckers of the sea. It’s a very physical, blue-collar kind of world. To me, Richard Phillips is that kind of man — a kind of Everyman who finds himself in this unwanted confrontation,” says the director. “He’s really an ordinary person, but the way he responds to what happens to him and what this ordeal he goes through has to say about the world we live in is extraordinary.”

From the very beginning, the filmmakers envisioned Tom Hanks as the veteran merchant mariner Richard Phillips. Hanks has excelled in diverse roles depicting seemingly ordinary men facing extreme crises: from Andrew Beckett, the lawyer suffering from AIDS and fighting a wrongful termination suit in “Philadelphia,” to astronaut Jim Lovell, struggling to return to Earth after a moon mission goes awry in “Apollo 13,” to John Miller, the World War II captain searching for a missing soldier in “Saving Private Ryan,” and to Chuck Noland, the FedEx executive trapped alone on a desert island in “Cast Away.” Hanks builds characters from the inside out, endowing ordinary people with a quiet but extraordinary bravery. His portrayal of Richard Phillips is no exception.

Greengrass says of his first time working with the two-time Oscar®-winner: “Tom and I went on a journey together. In the beginning, he kept saying, ‘For me, it’s really just about a guy in peril on the sea’ — and Tom honed his performance down to something that stark and true. He spent hour after hour in that lifeboat — everyone was moved by how much he put into this. It was not just a matter of his talent, but of his willingness to explore every inch of this man’s humanity — the accuracy of what Tom did and the detail of it was magnificent. I was also incredibly impressed by his physical stamina. We were out on the ocean for hour after hour, and Tom never complained. He was always the first one to turn around and say, ‘I’m ready. Let’s do it again.’

Hanks prepared for the role by getting to know Richard Phillips, visiting with the captain at his home in Vermont, where he lives with his wife, Andrea, a nurse. Hanks found Phillips to be an affable, self-effacing man who never saw himself as anything more than a seaman simply doing his job.

Incredibly, Phillips returned to his work at Maersk not long after his near fatal ordeal with Somali pirates. “That in particular I found amazing,” said Hanks. “That a man who suffered such a wrenching, terrifying ordeal, could bring himself to go right back to sea. I knew understanding Phillips’ strength — that particular kind of personal fortitude and connection to the sea, despite what happened — would be essential to understanding the sort of man Richard is. The reality is that not everybody has what it takes to be a ship captain — and not everyone could have withstood being taken hostage.”

Greengrass says that Hanks delivered a masterful, truthful performance. “I remember one very difficult scene. We were on the Truxtun and we were getting ready to film the scene, post-rescue. We asked Richard where that interview really happened, and he said it took place in the sick bay. Well, we’d been planning to do it in the Captain’s quarters, but as soon as he said it, the sick bay made much more sense. So Tom and I worked out how we’d do it, and I picked a crewmember from the Truxtun to play the scene with him. As a result, a woman who was not expecting when she woke up that morning to have a speaking role in a movie, or to be acting opposite a two-time Academy Award®-winner, did this climactic scene with Tom that brought the entire crew to tears! It’s just a stunning moment in the film.”
