Rescue5 is the First Ever Recipient of Gawad Kalasag

Rescue5 continues being a trailblazer, being the first in the broadcast industry to receive the Gawad KALASAG. Rescue5, led by TV5 Public Service Head Sherryl Yao, received an award for Best Private Organization at the 2013 Metropolitan Manila Regional Gawad KALASAG Awards last August 7, held at the Marikina Convention Center.

Rescue5’s Gawad KALASAG winning entry included its disaster response operations such as the Habagat flooding (August 2012), Typhoons Pedring and Quiel (September – October 2011), and the rescue of a Thai mountaineer during the Mayon explosion (May 2013). It also included its advocacy on disaster preparedness such as the launch of the Rescue 5 activity book for kids which passed the review of the Department of Education (DepEd). Rescue5 is the pioneer in the Philippines, and as cited by CNN, probably the first in the world, in equipping reporters and cameramen in emergency medical service, and other lifesaving skills. Last July, it also made a pioneering move in the broadcast industry, when it partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines–Philippine Air Force (AFP-PAF) to become an affiliated reserve unit, to be designated as its 500th Search and Rescue Group Reserve, to strengthen its response to calamities.

Gawad KALASAG is conducted annually to recognize exceptional contribution of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) practitioners in strengthening the resilience and adaptive capacities of communities to disaster risks. It also aims to promote the volunteerism spirit among agencies and individuals, providing needed help during the disaster response phase of the DRRM. Gawad KALASAG is organized by the Office of Civil Defense – National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

Rescue 5 is one of the best among the regional winners who will compete in the National Gawad KALASAG to be held in October.

Marion Aunor to Nora Aunor: "I have my own singing style. No need to use her."

Marion Aunor to Nora Aunor: "I have my own singing style. No need to use her."

Star Records’ fast-rising singer-songwriter Marion Aunor confessed that it remains a big challenge for her to be always associated with her aunt, Superstar Nora Aunor.

Of course, I am honored to be compared with Tita Nora because she is a legend in the music and movie industry. But I’m not trying to use her to get famous. I want to have my own identity because of my talent,” said Marion in her special visit in ABS-CBN’s hit FM radio station "MOR 101.9 For Life!"

According to Marion, who recently guested in "MOR 101.9 For Life!" shows, namely “Happy Happy Hapon” of DJ China Paps and “My Only Request” of DJ Danny Jay, if there is something similar between her and Nora, it is their love for music.

Style-wise, we really sing differently. Tita Nora sings traditional OPM, while I have diverse musical influences,” explained Marion, who recently launched her self-titled debut album under Star Records. “I believe that listeners always look for new music. And that is what my album offers. All of my songs, whether my original compositions or revivals, were arranged according to my singing style.”

I also want Filipino songs to cross over other cultures. These days, it’s so easy to distribute music worldwide. However, even if local songs are released out of the country, they are still being listened to only by Filipinos,” said Marion who takes pride in her carrier single, which is a revival of the international hit song “Just Give Me A Reason.”

Meanwhile, Marion will treat the FM radio listeners and online audience of "MOR 101.9 For Life! with a live concert on-air this Saturday (August 10). She will sing some of the tracks included in her album on DJ Popoy and DJ Bob Zilla’s radio show “MOR on Air” that airs weekly from 6pm to 7pm.

Continue to enjoy MORe music, MORe fun, and MORe stars in the hottest FM radio station in Mega Manila "MOR 101.9 For Life!"  and watch the free live streaming at www.mor1019.com. For more updates about "M.O.R. 101.9 For Life!" visit www.facebook.com/mor1019 and follow @MOR1019 on Twitter.

FIBA Asia 2013 Update: Gilas Pilipinas Enters Semifinal Round After Beating Kazakhstan

FIBA Asia 2013 Update: Gilas Pilipinas Enters Semifinal Round After Beating Kazakhstan

Team Gilas Pilipinas advances to the Final Four of the ongoing 27th FIBA Asia Men's Basketball Championship after beating team Kazakhstan, 88-58, in their quarterfinals encounter on Thursday, August 9.

Kazakhstan, led by Dmitriy Klimov, began to find their range from beyond the arc in the second quarter, while Gilas saw their shooting percentage dip.

A 13-3 Kazakhstan run midway through the second quarter cut the Gilas lead to a single digit, 38-44, before a huge dunk by Marcus Douthit sparked a Gilas run that allowed the Filipinos to enter the halftime break ahead by 11, 51-40.

The scoring slowed down tremendously early in the third quarter, and Kazakhstan was able to cut the lead to nine points.

But Jason Castro and Gary David's return to the game boosted the Philippines' offense, with a fastbreak lay-up by Castro sparking an 8-0 run to end the third period. Their hot scoring streak continued in the third quarter, with both David and Castro drilling three-pointers.

Kazakhstan did not help their cause as Klimov, their top scorer in the game, was called for two unsportsmanlike fouls in the span of 21 seconds and was thrown out of the game.

Severely lacking options on offense, especially with Jonson struggling, Kazakhstan scored only nine points in the fourth quarter and could not control the Filipinos' scoring barrage.

Kazakhstan coach Matteo Boniciolli explained that his team had little preparation for the FIBA Asia tournament, and his players barely took part in international competitions before.

The scores:

GILAS PILIPINAS 88 - David 22, Castro 13, Aguilar 11, Norwood 10, Chan 7, De Ocampo 6, Pingris 6, Douthit 5, Fonacier 3, Tenorio 3, Alapag 2, Fajardo 0

KAZKAHSTAN 58 - Klimov 14, Jonson 8, Ponomarev 8, Yevstigneyev 6, Murzagaliyev 5, Lapchenko 5, Bondarovich 4, Zhigulin 3, Sultanov 3, Yargaliyev 2, Bazhkin 0

Quarter-scoring: 32-15, 51-40, 67-49, 88-58

In the semifinals, Gilas Pilipinas will face Korea, which routed Qatar, 79-52, in their own quarterfinals game.

5 Filipinos vs. 30 Chicanos Bloody Street Fight Video Goes Viral

5 Filipinos vs. 30 Chicanos Bloody Street Fight Video Goes Viral

Filipinos can really make it easy on YouTube's viral video list.

From dancing inmates, to music sensations, internet video sharing has paved the way for Filipinos to go viral, but one new video featuring Filipinos has gone viral in a negative way.

The 7-minute video titled ‘5 Filipinos vs 30 Chicanos’ posted less than two weeks ago depicts a street fight believed to have originated in Texas, where a small group of Filipinos took on a much larger group of Latinos.

Netizens have applauded the Filipinos for defeating the Mexicans in the street fight, for knocking at least one of them unconscious and bloodying the nose of another.

Many Filipino youth are among the millions of viewers and tens of thousands of who posted comments about it on Facebook.

"There's this one day I was bored so I went to Facebook and I saw my friends shared it, a Facebook page and I saw that 5 Filipinos and 30 Chicanos and they're like fighting," recalled high school student Shaira Aragon.

"It's really bad it's not fair. There were only 5 Filipinos and there were 30 Chicanos. I think we should stop that," added Jewel Languasa.

Parents and youth group leaders said these viral YouTube videos set bad examples for the kids.

“Violence is not good. They mimic it and don't realize it's something really bad. At first they think it’s funny but then if it happens to them it's not funny," said Haydee Hart, a liason at the parent center of Carson High School.

Some Filipino American activists that work with the youth believe videos like these watched by many children represent deeper problems within the community.

"You don't see it in affluent neighborhoods and it’s because Filipinos and Latinos and other people of color are trying to empower themselves because they're not empowered socially. They're not empowered economically so they try to empower themselves through physical violence,” said Manila Ryce, the Chairperson of Kabataang Maka Bayan.

Parents and children believe the solution to these problems can be solved by the community through youth based programs, rather than physical violence, like what these high school Filipinos are doing with their Maharlika after-school program.

"So parents need to really see what they're kids are doing every kid almost has a cell phone that takes videos, they Instagram, they vine, there's some good some bad as parents we need to pay attention," added Hart.

While the identities of the youths involved and origins of the video remain unknown, Hart, an educator reminds people that if the police will investigate the incident.

“The video can eventually serve as evidence, a warning to the youth that while one can gain fame through the Internet, it can also lead to a world of trouble,” he said. - Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN North America Bureau as published on ABS-CBNNews.com

Gary Valenciano Suffering from Vocal Cords Problem

Gary Valenciano Suffering from Vocal Cords Problem

Gary Valenciano admitted he is currently having problems with his vocal cords just as he opened his 49th birthday concert series on Tuesday, August 6 at the Teatrino in Greenhills.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News after his concert on Tuesday, Valenciano said his voice has been hoarse since Thursday last week and his condition aggravated over the weekend.

Mga Thursday or Friday last week, naramdaman ko na sumakit ng konti ang lalamunan ko. Sabi ko, ‘Naku may 'ASAP' pa ako, may concert pa. Paano yan?’

Valenciano then sought the help of a doctor, who advised him not to speak and to get a complete rest.

“Sabi niya kung puwede lang ma-cancel ang concert ko, dapat ma-cancel na lang kasi ayaw niya talagang magsalita or kumanta ako. After this interview and when I go home, for the next two days kasi may show ako sa Thursday, [I will rest my voice],” he said.

Valenciano said this is the reason behind his tweet, saying those who will watch his show will be “seeing miracles.”

It’s not me anymore. Kaya nilagay ko sa Twitter that people are going to see and witness a miracle take place. Kasi kahapon talagang wala talaga. Nung nagre-rehearse kami, sinusulat ko ang mga sinasabi ko,” he said.

Valenciano added: “There have been other occasions na this has happened and I just prayed and God never put me to shame. He did it again tonight. Natakot ako sa first set kasi doon lahat ng [matataas] na kanta, sabi ko maaabot ko kaya? But lumabas talaga ng buo.”

Valenciano is holding his concert series at Teatrino in Greenhills every Tuesday from August 6 to September 24. The singer said he chose to celebrate his birthday this way so it will be more intimate compared to a concert held in a large venue.

These people are really close to me, these are the people who’ve known me for so many years. If I do have a celebration, it will be my anniversary naman. But for my birthday, this is it,” he said. - ABS-CBNNews.com

TV5 Airs Gilas Pilipinas' Battle with Kazakhstan in FIBA Asia 2013 Knockout Playoffs

Gilas Pilipinas

The road to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain gets tougher as Gilas Pilipinas vies for one of the three berths in the ongoing FIBA Asia Championship.

Gilas Pilipinas, finishing on top of Group E, will face a tough assignment in the quarterfinals against a determined Kazakhstan, which placed fourth in Group F. The game will be aired live on TV5 starting at 8PM tonight.

The strong second round play of Gilas against Japan, Qatar and Hong Kong catapulted the national squad to the number one spot in Group E. The hot shooting of Jeff Chan and Larry Fonacier enabled the team to dominate their opponents.

The inside presence of Marcus Douthhit, Marc Pingris, Ranidel de Ocampo, and Japeth Aguilar has limited the scoring opportunies of opposing big men. The all-around play of guards Jayson Castro and Gabe Norwood has been the x-factor in the play of the Philippine squad.

Gilas Pilipinas and Kazakhstan played in a tune-up match two weeks ago prior to the start the FIBA Asia Championship, with the national squad winning 92-89. Kazakhstan has naturalized guard Jerry Johnson leading the charge but their tall players could be lethal as well.

The action continues on Saturday with the Semifinal games to be played at 530PM and at 1030PM. The conclusion of the tournament on Sunday will have the battle for third at 5PM and the exciting finals at 730PM.

Gilas Pilipinas is aiming to duplicate the feat achieved by the 1973 Philippine team and book a trip to Spain in 2014.
Catch all the FIBA Asia Championship games at the Mall of Asia Arena and the live broadcasts on TV5, AksyonTV, HYPER and Basketball TV, the host broadcaster of FIBA Asia 2013. FIBA Asia LIVE action is also available in high-definition to Cignal subscribers (channel 199).
Avid basketball fans can also get all the updates from FIBA’s official website of the tournament on as well as through the Pinoy Hoops app, now available on the Google Play Store for Android users.

Tickets to the FIBA Asia Championship are available at SM Tickets [www.smtickets.com].

Dennis Trillo Leaves Tom Rodriguez, Is this the End for "My Husband's Lover"?

Dennis Trillo Leaves Tom Rodriguez, Is this the End for "My Husband's Lover"?

03

Last night’s episode of GMA’s controversial gay themed series, “My Husband’s Lover” opened with an entire 9-minute segment devoted to just one scene: a dialogue between (Vincent) Tom Rodriguez and (Lally) Carla Abellana.

In the said scene, Vincent and Lally were laying on their bed but, unlike most couples, they were inches apart from each other. Obviously, after Lally’s discovery of his husband’s affair with Eric, their (Vincent and Lally) relationship has turned a bit cold.

Lally asked whether Vincent would one day turn into a loud, crossdressing gay that his kuya Zandro (Keempee de Leon) has become. Vincent explained to Lally that he and Zandro are very different: that Zandro — and gays like him — believe that they are women and so they dress, act, and think like they are real women — but he (Vincent) is a different type of gay.

Here’s a transcript of the dialogue that ensued:

LALLY: …kapwa mo lalaki?

VINCENT: (Silence) I’m sorry.

LALLY: I’m a big girl, Daddy. Marami man akong nalaman sayo na mas nakasakit sa akin, ang importante ngayon ay nag-o-open up ka na sa akin. Thank you.

Kaya, mommy, thank you. Thank you.

– End of Scene –

When will Vincent (Tom Rodriguez) find the courage to face the reality that he needs to do one and only one thing: CHOOSE?

We will know the answer soon on the exciting “My Husband’s Lover” which airs weeknights after “Mundo Mo’y Akin” on GMA Telebabad.

Gilas Pilipinas Beats Hong Kong Team in August 7 Match of FIBA Asia 2013 Championship

Gilas Pilipinas Beats Hong Kong Team in August 7 Match of FIBA Asia 2013 Championship

Gilas Pilipinas got off to a terrible start but recovered in time to overcome Hong Kong, 67-55, and clinch the top spot in Group E of the 27th FIBA Asia Men's Basketball Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

Against the winless Hong Kong squad, Gilas had a flat, disappointing start to the game and they trailed by as much as 10 points twice in the first half, 16-6 and 29-19.

"Hong Kong played a great game," said Gilas coach Chot Reyes. "They came in with a great game plan, but we found a way to grind out this victory."

"Like I told the players, we've been around long enough to know that there is no such thing as a sure thing, there's no such thing as an easy win or a sure win," he added.

After trailing 28-33 at halftime, Gilas took the lead for good late in the third quarter behind point guard LA Tenorio, who completed back-to-back three-point plays that gave Gilas a 44-39 lead.

A trifecta by Lam Man Chun and a free throw by Lau Tung Leung brought Hong Kong to within a point, but Gilas ended the quarter strong as Larry Fonacier beat the buzzer with a lay-up.

It was a nip-and-tuck game at the start of the fourth period, as Hong Kong came as close as one point, 48-49, then 50-51, before Gabe Norwood led Gilas in a 7-1 run that allowed them to take a 58-51 lead with just 5:26 to go in the game.

A triple by Chan Siu Wing with a little over four minutes left cut the Gilas advantage to four points, and prompted a timeout from Reyes.

The Filipinos responded with a 7-0 blast that put them ahead by double-digits, 65-54, with Norwood once again leading the way with a jump shot and a reverse lay-up on the break.

"Hats off to Hong Kong, they came out and pushed us, they challenged us to come out and compete," said Norwood, who played over 28 minutes and finished with 11 points.

"They had a great game plan, they outhustled us for three-and-a-half quarters. Luckily enough, we were able to make a run late and pull out a win," he added.

The victory allowed Gilas to clinch the top spot in Group E of the tournament, and in the process arrange a date with Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals, which begin on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Gilas' hopes of nailing the top spot received a huge boost earlier in the day when Qatar stunned Chinese Taipei in another Group E game, but Norwood said they should not use that as an excuse for their poor start to the game.

"I would hate to use that excuse because I think we are more professional than that," Norwood said. "We just came out and played poorly."

The close game prevented Reyes from resting naturalized center Marcus Douthit, who suffered a calf injury in their game against Qatar yesterday, and forward Ranidel De Ocampo, who has an MCL injury.

"We didn't want to play Marcus a lot of minutes, but a lot of our players weren't ready tonight, and I had to do what I had to do to make sure we get the W," Reyes said.

Gilas will now prepare to take on Kazakhstan, who finished in fourth place in Group F. The two squads engaged in a tune-up game prior to the tournament, which Gilas won, but Reyes said that encounter is now meaningless.

"I'm sure both teams have forgotten that already," he said. "It's a brand new game on Friday."

Douthit wound up playing 31 minutes and scoring a team-high 14 points, though he struggled with his shooting, making only six of his 14 field goal attempts.

Back-up centers Japeth Aguilar and June Mar Fajardo failed to make an impact, as they went scoreless in a combined ten minutes of action.

Hong Kong controlled the boards, 52-39, and coach Kwong Wai Cheung stressed that he was satisfied with his team's performance, especially against a strong Filipino squad.

Hong Kong exits the tournament with a 0-5 record.

The scores:

GILAS PILIPINAS 67 - Douthit 13, Chan 12, Norwood 11, Castro 11, Tenorio 9, Pingris 6, De Ocampo 2, Fonacier 2, Alapag 1, David 0, Fajardo 0, Aguilar 0

HONG KONG 55 - Chan S. 16, Reid 12, Wong 6, Li 6, Lam 6, Fong 4, Lau 3, Chan Y 2, Lau 0, Lee 0

Quarter-scoring: 13-19, 28-33, 46-43, 67-55. - ABS-CBNNews Sports
