FIBA Asia 2013 Winners: Gilas Wins Against Jordan, Battles Today Against Taiwan

Gilas Pilipinas vs. Jordan

Gilas Pilipinas bucked another slow start and relied on a stirring third quarter to pull away from Jordan, 77-71, and notch their second consecutive victory in the 27th FIBA Asia Men's Championship at the Mall of Asia Arena on Thursday.

Four players scored in double figures, led by Jeff Chan's 17 points, as Gilas seized the lead in Group A with a 2-0 record while handing Jordan its second loss of the tournament.

"We're still not happy," Gilas Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes said after the game. "We can be happy on August 11. Today, we are fooling ourselves if we allow ourselves to be happy."

"There is a lot of room for improvement, but our theme is to keep on getting better every day," he added.

Gilas trailed at halftime, 33-38, and were down by as much as 11 points in the opening quarter as Jordan's Mohammad Hadrab torched them for 10 points in the opening frame.

"You cannot print what I told them (the players) at halftime," said Reyes. "We just did a couple of adjustments on defense, and on offense, I told them to see the floor a little better and anticipate the defensive tendency of the other team."

Boosted by a rabid MOA Arena crowd, Gilas responded to Reyes' instructions in spectacular fashion, as they outscored Jordan 24-9 in the third frame.

Back-to-back triples by Ranidel de Ocampo and Chan sparked Gilas in the third period, before Jason Castro took over.

"The Blur" gave Jordan fits with his quickness, as he repeatedly got into the teeth of their defense and pressured the opposing point guards on both ends of the floor.

"Castro struggled at the start, that's why I pulled him out early, but when he settled down, I brought him back in and we saw his real game," said Reyes.

Castro said their defense was the key to the third quarter run.

"We were not communicating on defense. So 'yun ang naging key namin sa second half -- every player, nag-uusap sa loob," he said.

By the time Japeth Aguilar drained back-to-back jumpers, Gilas had built a double-digit lead, 53-42, in the third frame, and would enter the final period with a 57-47 lead.

Jordan's naturalized player Jimmy Baxter, who was cuffed by Gabe Norwood for most of the contest, tried to take control in the final period as he brought his squad to within six points, 59-65, with still 5:36 to go in the game.

But Chan drained another triple, then Castro blew by his defender for a lay-up as Gilas led by double-digits anew, 70-59.

Jordan threatened for the last time after Hadrab scored five straight points to make it 64-70 with two minutes remaining, but Jimmy Alapag drilled a cold-blooded triple for Gilas.

Though Jordan continued to attack the basket in the final minutes of the game, they found little success and Gary David and Castro proved to be steady at the line as they iced the game for the Philippines.

Though he still sees room for improvement in his squad, Reyes says the Gilas that played against Jordan was a better team than the one that struggled to put away Saudi Arabia the night before.

"I felt we were better tonight than we were last night, and hopefully we will be better tomorrow," he said.

Gilas will take on Chinese-Taipei in a highly-anticipated showdown tomorrow at 8:30 pm at the MOA Arena, while Jordan faces Saudi Arabia in a must-win game.

Win or lose against Chinese Taipei, Gilas Pilipinas will move into the 2nd round.

The scores:

GILAS PILIPINAS 77 - Chan 17, Castro 16, De Ocampo 11, DOuthit 11, Norwood 8, Aguilar 6, Alapag 3, Tenorio 3, David 2, Fonacier 0, Fajardo 0, Pingris 0

JORDAN 71 - Hadrab 19, Baxter 14, Al-Sous 13, Hussein 9, Abdeen 6, Abu Ruqayah 3, Alhamarshsh 3, Abuqoura 2, Zaghab 2, Alnajjar 0, ALfaraj 0

Quarter-scoring: 16-20, 33-38, 57-47, 77-71

Gilas Pilipians vs. Taiwan

Gilas Pilipinas and Taiwan have both advanced to the second round of the 27th FIBA Asia Men’s Championship, but an explosive clash can still be expected tonight when the two undefeated squads face off at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Both the Philippines and Taiwan are toting 2-0 records after beating Group A opponents Saudi Arabia and Jordan in the first two days of the tournament.

“I’m still not happy,” Gilas coach Chot Reyes said after their win against Jordan last night. “We can be happy on August 11. I think we are fooling ourselves if we allow ourselves to get happy. There is still a lot of room for improvement.”

“Our theme is to just keep getting better every game. In the pre-game, I reminded the players that this isn’t a sprint, this is a long, drawn out race,” he added.

Reyes said he has seen progress from the national team from their first game of the tournament, a win over Saudi Arabia.

“I felt we were better tonight (Friday) than we were last night (Thursday). Hopefully we will be better tomorrow,” he said.

The game between Gilas Pilipinas and Taiwan has been highly anticipated by Filipino fans since last May, when the national team pulled out of the Jones Cup, an invitational tournament, which was hosted by Taiwan.

This was due to the shooting of a Taiwanese fisherman in Philippine waters last May, triggering a diplomatic row that affected even Gilas Pilipinas.

While Taiwan coach Hsu Chin-Che said he is excited for tonight’s showdown, he insists that it is “just a game.”

The Philippines-Taiwan game tips off at 8:30 pm.

At 5:45 pm, title favorites Iran and China face off for the first time in a Group C showdown.

Iran is unbeaten so far, routing Malaysia and Korea in their first two games. China has a 1-1 record, having drubbed Malaysia yesterday after losing to Korea in their tournament opener.

“Every team comes to win a championship, and they really come to fight. Us too, we come to fight and to win the game,” said Iran star Hamed Haddadi, who torched Korea for 30 points last night.

Maja Salvador and Paul Soriano's Multi-Awarded Movie Airs on Cinema One this Sunday

Director Paul Soriano’s highly-acclaimed and multi-awarded independent film “Thelma” airs on Cinema One this Sunday (August 4), bringing back to the screen what still stands as one of Maja Salvador’s breakthrough roles to date.

Thelma (Maja Salvador) is a small-town girl who discovers that she has a gift for speed. Born to a poor family in the farming business, her journey into adulthood is surrounded by dealing with school, house chores, and giving time to her more academically-gifted sister Hannah (Eliza Pineda).

On the way to school, the two sisters usually decide to take a shorter route, crossing a highway of speeding vehicles. In such cases, Thelma would usually take the lead and sprint ahead, but on one day where she refuses to go to school, Hannah is left to cross the road alone and, without her sister’s leadership, gets hit by a fast-moving car.

Driven by guilt, Thelma is pushed to bring out her full potential in what she’s good at in order to further support her now injured family. With the trauma of the accident, Thelma chooses to run - not away from what happened, but towards what she is supposed to do.

Playing the role of Thelma, Director Paul Soriano gave much praise to Maja Salvador in this film, saying, “For me, she was the best actress here. She carried the movie from start to finish. There’s no other person to play the role of Thelma but Maja Salvador.” Maja took home two Best Actress trophies from the 35th Gawad Urian Awards and the Luna Awards for her role in “Thelma”.

Don’t miss out on “Thelma” as it airs at 8:00 p.m. this Sunday (August 4) on the Blockbuster Sundays movie block of Cinema One (SkyCable channel 56), the country’s number one cable channel. For updates about the program schedule, follow @cinema_one on Twitter and like its official Facebook page www.facebook.com/Cinema1channel.

Man Crawls Off Plane Suffers Physical and Emotional Distress

A 40-year old disabled man named D. Baraaka Kanaan is suing Delta Air Lines after reportedly being forced to crawl on and off flights, ABC News reported.

Kanaan decided to file a legal suit after suffering from physical and extreme emotional suffering as a result of two separate incidents of questionable treatments - first on July 27, 2012 on his initial flight from Maui, Hawaii to Nantucket, Massachusetts. Then two days later when he returned to Hawaii from Massachusetts.

Kanaan claims that he called the airline weeks in advance and they told him that he would need an aisle chair to get him to his seat and a lift to get on the plane. After crawling off the plane upon his arrival in Nantucket as other passengers watched, he was assured that they would have the proper equipment to help him onto the plane. Instead, according to the Daily Mail, a Delta attendant offered to put a piece of cardboard down so Kanaan would not ruin his clothes. To add insult to injury, the airline gave the former college professor a $100 voucher and 25,000 of Delta’s SkyMiles. Kanaan refused the offer and pressed on with his lawsuit.

The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines and airports to “provide boarding assistance to individuals with disabilities by using ramps, mechanical lifts, or other suitable devices where level-entry boarding by loading bridge or mobile lounge is not available.” This applies to any airplane with a seating capacity of 31 or more passengers. - www.inquisitr.com

127 Yard Sale: The Biggest Sale in History Begins August 8

The 26th annual “World's Longest Yard Sale” begins Thursday and lasts through Sunday. The event stretches from Gadsden to 5 miles north of Addison, Mich., covering 690 miles.

The sale, also known as the U.S. 127 Corridor Sale, began in 1987 and always starts on the first Thursday in August.

The idea behind the sale was to get travelers off the interstate system and onto back roads. Its route runs from Michigan to Chattanooga, Tenn., then switches to the Lookout Mountain Parkway and continues to Gadsden.

There are hundreds of attractions in the towns and communities along the route: riverboats, railroads, fishing, hiking, art, music, historic sites and more.

National publications, such as Reader's Digest, National Geographic and Southern Living, have featured the annual sale. It has been deemed affordable and family-friendly.

Thousands of shoppers trek through north Alabama looking for bargains and treasures. The event's motto is “I Drove, I Stopped, I Shopped 'til I Dropped.”

Vendors typically set up by 8 a.m. and operate until evening. Shoppers are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen.

The sale begins in Gadsden on Noccalula Road near Noccalula Falls, and traffic may be bumper-to-bumper along portions of the route or at peak travel times. Shoppers may have to keep a lookout for “no parking or trespassing” requests.

Talentadong Pinoy Battle Royale: a Clash of Philippines' Finest Talents Set on August 18

Talentadong Pinoy Battle Royale: a Clash of Philippines' Finest Talents Set on August 18

Seven of the finest Filipino talents from the Philippines and all over the world will battle for the chance to be the fourth Talentadong Pinoy Ultimate Talentado.  Sor, Laserman, Rina Forbes, Larvae, Spyro Marco, Noctunal and Haina Udin will showcase their amazing talents Battle Royale style LIVE at the Cuneta Astrodome, Pasay City on August 18.

Hailing from Iligan City, Davao, Sor Apao started singing as early as she is 4 years old. Admittedly shy and timid, she shares that she becomes a different person once she starts belting notes on stage. Besides her amazing talent in singing, her determination to reach her dreams pushed her to join again in this year’s season of Talentadong Pinoy.

Laserman, or JB Dela Cruz in real life, has been a fan of illusionist David Copperfield since he was 8 years old. He lived an ordinary life supporting his family and working hard as their breadwinner. However, he realized that the magic cannot be outgrown and that it is his true passion. As a founder of a volunteer group for sick and poor kids, JB joined Talentadong Pinoy to be able to share more magic to the lives of these children.

Rina Forbes considers being one of the Hall of Famers as her biggest achievement. With music as her passion, the young Rina joined church choirs and studied various lyric sheets to train her voice. People began recognizing her talents and soon, she was given opportunities to sing outside the country. Rina dedicates all her performances to God as a way of thanking Him for all His blessings.

Despite all the bullying and ridicule they received, the members of contortionist group Larvae remained positive and taught themselves all the things they know about acrobatics and contortionism. Because of their incredible talent, they got a college scholarship and continue to make their families proud until today.

Marco, even though born from New York, USA, never lost the Filipino values taught by his parents. His interest to play the Chinese yo-yo started when he saw one at a trip to Disneyworld. Bullied as a child, he started regaining his confidence as he performs his self-taught yo-yo tricks. When they went back to the Philippines, his lola witnessed his incredible talent as a yo-yo player and encouraged him to audition for Talentadong Pinoy.

While mixing traditional Filipino dances with Hip-Hop made Nocturnal stand-out from other hip-hop dance groups, their determination and discipline as a team brought them to the Talentadong Pinoy Battle Royale rounds. The group would even sell “bote-dyaryo” to earn money so they can commute to practices and competition – proving to everyone that winning the championship means everything for the group.

The first winner of Talentadong Pinoy Middle East, Haina Udin, shared that she is willing to leave her life in Qatar if she bags the title from Talentadong Pinoy Battle Royale. She believes that winning the title would open more opportunities for her singing career. She once joined and won the World Championships of  Performing Arts (WCOPA).

Who will be this season’s Ultimate Talentado? Witness the clash of the finest Filipino talents at Talentadong Pinoy Battle Royale on August 18 – LIVE at the Cuneta Astrodome, Pasay City.

In “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters,” the Oracle further complicates Percy’s sense of self and duty, says Lerman, when it tells him he “is either going to destroy Olympus or save it.  He’s not sure if he can rise to the occasion.”   Percy has a lot at stake, according to Freudenthal.  “He’s trying to save Camp Half-Blood and prove himself as a hero.  He’s grown distant from his father, who is not really responding to his requests for help.  Percy embarks upon his ‘odyssey’ for two reasons: to save his home, and to ascertain if he is indeed a hero.”

On his journey to battle demigod Luke (played by Jake Abel) and retrieve the Golden Fleece, Percy discovers he has a half-brother, Tyson (Douglas Smith), who is a Cyclops.  “Tyson is a sweet, teenage Cyclops,” says director Thor Freudenthal.  “Cyclopes are viewed as monsters, but everything about Tyson is the opposite of that.”

Tyson is a warrior, of sorts,” says Douglas Smith, who plays the one-eyed teen.  “He’s a really soulful, salt of the earth Cyclops.  Tyson is one of those people who seem overly simple but he’s actually got a deep wisdom.  It comes in handy in the quest because he’s got a variety of skills that only Cyclopes have.  He’s a good guy, and identifies more with the Half-Bloods than with the other Cyclopes, who like to eat demigods.  Tyson looks like a villain, but he has a heart of gold and that can be very confusing when people meet him.  And it’s confusing for him, too.”

Like Percy, Tyson is a son of Poseidon, but while Percy’s mother is human, Tyson’s mother was a sea nymph.  Smith describes the sibling relationship: “Percy and Tyson are half-brothers, but Tyson doesn’t like to harp on that.  Percy doesn’t expect to have a brother show up at camp, he doesn’t expect to bring him along on the journey, and he does not expect to be won over by Tyson’s optimism and point of view, which is fresh and filled with wonder.  Ultimately, Percy realizes that Poseidon is looking out for him, because he sent Tyson to Percy.”

Initially, the filmmakers planned to give Smith a prosthetic eye, but they decided to create the eye mostly through visual effects.  The prosthetic shrank in size from a full facemask to a small forehead application that created the effect of a single brow, which Smith only had to sport when Tyson wears sunglasses.  And, as in the book, an application of magical mist creates the illusion of Tyson having two eyes; for those scenes, Smith wears only his own visage.

Douglas Smith is best known for his starring role as Ben Henrickson on HBO’s critically acclaimed series “Big Love,” starring Bill Paxton and Jeanne Tripplehorn. He also starred in the indie film “Remember the Daze,” opposite Amber Heard, Leighton Meester and Lyndsy Fonseca, He recently starred in the independent “The Boy Who Smells Like Fish,” opposite Zoë Kravitz and was recently seen in Brandon Cronenberg’s “Antiviral.”

“Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” (3D and 2D) opens August 7 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Naughties Vexy and Hackus are Out to Trick Smurfette in “The Smurfs 2”

Naughties Vexy and Hackus are Out to Trick Smurfette in “The Smurfs 2”

Bad wizard Gargamel has created the Naughties – Vexy and Hackus -- and all he needs is Papa’s secret magic spell to turn his Naughties into ‘real Smurfs’ and have unlimited Smurf essence, in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation's magical sequel, “The Smurfs 2.”

When it comes to destroying the Smurfs, you can see Gargamel’s train of thought: if you can’t beat ‘em, make ‘em. After all, he did it before: take clay and just add wizardry. “Smurfette started as a lump of clay that Gargamel dropped into his cauldron and brought to life, so that she could infiltrate Smurf Village. But Papa Smurf saw the good in her, and used a magic spell to turn her into a True Blue Smurf,” says director Raja Gosnell.

In creating the Smurf-like characters called the Naughties, producer Jordan Kerner went the extra mile to make sure that Vexy and Hackus would fit squarely into the Smurfs universe. “Every step of the way on the Smurfs movies, we work very closely with Peyo’s daughter Veronique Culliford and Smurfs historian Tom Cosijn to make sure we are getting it right – in script development, production, all the way through the release of the films. And that went double as we created the Naughties,” he says. “The neutral color gray was their desire, as Peyo didn’t want the Smurfs ever associated with any particular human color. Peyo created this world – as we expanded what he built, we felt a duty to respect and honor what came before.”

Vexy is the sister that Smurfette never had - until now. But unlike Smurfette, she’s not as nice; she’s determined to be Naughty and do Gargamel’s bidding. It’s not easy having a dad like Gargamel – Vexy has grown up to be tough, devious, and very persistent in bringing Smurfette to the naughty side… but when she meets Smurfette, it turns out that Vexy may not be as Naughty as she thinks.

Vexy is smart and mischievous and has lots of attitude. Attitude to spare,” says Gosnell. “And she really does want to please her father.”

Christina Ricci infuses the voice of Vexy with sarcasm and sauciness. Ricci says that Vexy and Hackus are just looking for the same thing any child needs. “They don’t have a family and love,” she says. “They’re not really bad – they’re just lonely kids. When they kidnap Smurfette, that’s just their way to try to get their ‘father’s’ love. But at the same time, I like that I got to play naughty.”

In a strange way, voice work gives you so much freedom as an actor,” says Ricci. “As you work on one line, and the quality of your voice, and fine-tuning single syllables, over and over, you can dissect and pick apart and change little things and make it your own. It’s amazing to me how much fun that is.

Of course, Vexy is just one-half of Gargamel’s dastardly plan. “Vexy is the brains of the operation,” says Kerner. “And her brother, Hackus, is the unbridled enthusiasm and brawn.”

Hackus is a lovable, sweet, hyperactive loose cannon easily influenced by his Naughty sister, Vexy. He’s a bit berserk, sweet to the core, a cyclone of energy, and is a Naughty of few words - very few, in fact.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’s” JB Smoove is the voice behind the misbehaving Hackus.

Describing his character, he says, “He’s like an experiment gone wrong. Hackus loves to have fun and loves being naughty. Vexy and Hackus play tricks on Azrael, they play tricks on Gargamel, they play tricks on each other. He’s enthusiastic, happy, playful, curious, fun, and overwhelming. He’s Hackus. Hackus Hackus Hackus!

Opening across the Philippines on August 07 in 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “The Smurfs 2” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Coleen Garcia Talks About Involvement in Billy Crawford and Nikki Gil Break-up

Coleen Garcia distanced herself from the recent breakup of  “It’s Showtime” co-host Billy Crawford and ex-girlfriend Nikki Gil after being accused as the "third party" in the former couple's four-year long relationship.

Ang masasabi ko lang, there’s nothing going on between me and Billy. I’m close to him but I’m close to everybody in 'Showtime.' Huwag sanang bigyan ng kulay 'yun saka wala akong kinalaman sa breakup nila. I think that’s a very sensitive topic so ayoko talagang makisawsaw dun,” she said in an interview posted at entertainment website Pep.ph.

The young actress-host shared Billy has already apologized to her since her name is being dragged into the issue.

Well, he apologized na nasama ako dito, so 'yun lang naman. He texted, ‘Sorry ha na nasama ka sa isyu na ito.’ Sabi ko, ‘It’s okay, I understand naman kasi showbiz nga.’ I have thought about it. Siguro kasi ako lang ang single sa 'Showtime,'” she said.

Coleen said she is not anymore surprised that issues like this exist.

I thought about it, showbiz is full of rumors. Siguro I’m not surprised. People want to know certain answers and they will not get it from me, kasi wala talaga akong alam diyan. It’s part of it, it’s part of the job na rumors come and go,” she said.

She further said that she will not let this kind of intrigues affect her as long as she knows the truth and she is not stepping on someone. - ABS-CBNNews.com
