“Huwag Ka Lang Mawawala” First Week Marathon Special Airs this Sunday

Enrique Gil, Martin del Rosario, Ejay Falcon Bring Chills this Sunday on Cinema One

Enrique Gil, Martin del Rosario, Ejay Falcon Bring Chills this Sunday on Cinema One

Catch the chills this Sunday night (June 23) on Cinema One, as the horror film that experienced real-life thrills, “Amorosa”, airs on its Blockbuster Sundays movie block.

The film stars Angel Aquino, Enrique Gil, Martin del Rosario, Ejay Falcon, Empress Schuck and Jane Oineza.

“Amorosa” goes into the life of a woman named Rosa (Angel Aquino), whose family is traumatized by a road accident. After the violent occurrence, she looks for a new beginning by moving into an old pension house with her two sons Rommel (Enrique Gil) and Amiel (Martin del Rosario). There, hope for a fresh start falls short as they slowly discover the haunting truth behind what the house is actually hiding.

Given the film’s psychological horror-drama angle, Angel deems this as one of her most challenging roles to date. She said, “When they gave this to me, I was always on my feet and my toes. I told myself, I can’t leave this one to nothing.”

“Amorosa” was directed by Topel Lee, an acclaimed director for film, television, and music videos alike. He is widely known for a signature style of cinematography and his themes of strong female lead characters. The man behind “Sundo” and “Ouija”, he has a knack for the horror genre.

Catch “Amorosa” as it airs this Sunday (June 23) at 8:00 p.m. on Cinema One (SkyCable Channel 56), the Philippines’ number one cable channel. For updates, follow @cinema_one on Twitter and visit its official Facebook page www.facebook.com/Cinema1channel.

Marian Rivera - Mother Lily Monteverde Feud Ends

After news reports on Wednesday (June 19) revealed a "misunderstanding" between Regal Films matriarch Mother Lily Monteverde and Kapuso Primetime Queen Marian Rivera, which had something to do with Regal's non-participation in this year's Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), the two patched things up on Thursday, June 20, at the press conference of Marian's upcoming movie with Richard Gutierrez, "My Lady Boss."

In an interview, Marian said that she has a lot to thank Monteverde for and that without her support and help, she (Marian) would not have become the star that she is today. She maintained that whatever happened between her and the producer was just a "misunderstanding."

Later in the press conference Monteverde arrived and Marian welcomed her with a tight hug which lightened up the tensed atmosphere.

Monteverde explained that her statements that were quoted in the news items were made out of disappointment over Regal's absence in the said festival. Regal usually had at least one solely produced entry in the MMFF in the past years. Despite all that has been said, Monteverde still considers Marian as one of her "daughters" in the industry.

Monteverde owns Regal Films, which is a co-producer of GMA Films for "My Lady Boss."

"My Lady Boss" is scheduled to screen in nationwide cinemas beginning July 3.

Billy Crystal Gives Voice, Humor to Mike Wazowski in “Monsters University”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Billy Crystal Gives Voice, Humor to Mike Wazowski in “Monsters University”

Mike Wazowski’s lifelong dream is to become a Scarer at Monsters, Inc. - and he’s sure he knows just how to do it. Comic actor Billy Crystal returns to Pixar’s recording studios, giving voice, humor and a heightened level of emotion to this beloved little green one-eyed monster, in the new comedy adventure “Monsters University.”

In the film, ever since he was a young monster, Mike’s had his eye on Monsters University, home of the monster world’s top Scare Program. Now a freshman and hopeful Scare student, he’s well versed in the rich history, theory and technique required to reach his goal, and he has more confidence, enthusiasm, determination and heart than all of his classmates combined. Then he meets James P. Sullivan - Sulley - and life gets tricky.

He gets little guy’s disease bad,” says Crystal. “He has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to Sulley - this big handsome monster who’s everything Mike really wants to be.”

The problem, of course, is that Sulley fails to nurture his natural abilities, while Mike works extra hard - to little avail. “This movie does something that is rarely done,” says director Dan Scanlon. “It shows someone who has a dream and a desire that doesn’t work out the way he expects it to. I think that happens to everyone in some way or another, so we really wanted this movie to show that sometimes when you reach those walls, there’s something better around the corner. It’s not the end of the world. Mike Wazowski is the perfect guy to tell that story.

Crystal says that for monsters, the characters are surprisingly human. “It’s easy to think that these characters can’t possibly have any depth or feelings because they're monsters, but they do,” says Crystal. “They’re young men figuring out who they are and what they want in life - and then what life actually has in store for them. What’s great about these movies is that they don't just entertain, they also have a wonderful message.”

And going back in time is sort of a bonus, adds the actor. “Suddenly, we're 18 years old. They made us look younger and thinner. I wish life could work that way.

We had to take Mike and Sulley back in time,” adds Scanlon. “Which meant we had to make them younger - college age - how do you do that with monsters?

The question proved challenging for Scanlon and the production team. “We made them thinner, shortened their horns, removed age lines and made their eyes brighter and colors more saturated,” says character art director Jason Deamer. “We made a bunch of subtle moves and were pleased at how different they looked standing next to the older versions. We thought the cumulative effect was huge. But it wasn’t enough - a slightly skinnier green ball with one eye was still just that. When you extract the essence of someone’s likeness, whatever those basic elements are, that’s what you remember ten years after seeing a movie.

So the team gave each of the returning characters what they called a “visual hook.” For Mike, artists added braces for the grade school version, which graduated to a retainer by the time he landed on the Monsters University campus.

All of the characters - both old and new - were treated with Pixar’s signature innovative spirit, creating a memorable cast that’s ultimately brought to life by a talented roster of voice talent led by Billy Crystal and John Goodman. “Those guys were great,” says Scanlon. “We recorded them individually early on in the process - just to get them back into the groove of the characters and for everyone to find the slightly younger versions of Mike and Sulley. But when we got them together, it was wonderful. They really get along, and have a natural charisma together. It was great for me as a director to just set up the basic idea of the scene and let them run with it. I’d stand back and watch, making little changes here and there. The energy level was high. Recording them together really allowed for the kind of happy accidents that you don’t often find in animation - those great spontaneous moments.

Opening across the Philippines on June 26 in Disney Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “Monsters University” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

John Goodman Breathes Life to Sulley in “Monsters University”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

John Goodman Breathes Life to Sulley in “Monsters University”

When it comes to Scaring, James “Sulley” Sullivan's a natural - his abundant size, fierce roar and family legacy of a long line of high-achieving Scarers make him a shoo-in for Monsters U's esteemed Scare Program.

Acclaimed actor John Goodman (“Argo”) returns to breathe life to Sulley in Disney/Pixar's animated comedy adventure “Monsters University.”

We all know who Sulley becomes,” says director Dan Scanlon. “Sulley was humble, sweet and mature in ‘Monsters, Inc.’ - we had fun playing him against character in ‘Monsters University.’ He’s a very talented Scarer - a big guy, an athlete. He looks the part and he knows it. He shows off a little and he might be a little arrogant.

But from the moment the overly confident monster steps his big furry feet on campus, it’s clear he’d rather crack jokes than books - and he learns the hard way that his unfettered talent and family ties can only get him so far. An ill-timed spar with little green know-it-all Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) gets him kicked out of the Scare Program. With his ego bruised and future in jeopardy, a stubborn Sulley must put his pride aside, team up with an odd bunch of misfit monsters and actually work if he wants to live up to his true Scaring potential.

According to filmmakers, the character - who weighs in at 985 pounds - went through a bevy of changes before they landed on the right mix of confidence and likability. Fortunately, they had the right guy in place to help bring the complex character to life. Says producer Kori Rae, “John Goodman - the hardest-working man in show business - returned to voice Sulley and is absolutely great.”

Goodman was excited to revisit the role, but says he had concerns about taking the beloved character back in time. “I worried about finding a higher register for his voice, but it just took care of itself,” says the actor. “I’d come in and read a few lines and we’d go on to do the rest of the script. But we’d always come back and get the original lines at the end because by then the character had found itself.

Since we had to take Mike and Sulley back in time,” adds Scanlon, “We had to make them younger - college age” to be exact.

Character art director Jason Deamer and several members of the production team applied the knowledge they’d garnered in their efforts to create younger versions of Mike and Sulley. “We made them thinner, shortened their horns, removed age lines and made their eyes brighter and colors more saturated,” says Deamer. “We made a bunch of subtle moves and were pleased at how different they looked standing next to the older versions. We thought the cumulative effect was huge.”

But it wasn’t enough - so the team gave each of the returning characters what they called a “visual hook.” Sulley was adorned with an unruly tuft of teenage hair, reflecting his laidback attitude.

John Goodman was most recently seen in Ben Affleck’s drama “Argo,” which won the Best Picture Oscar for 2012, the Robert Zemeckis thriller “Flight,” Clint Eastwood’s sports drama “Trouble with the Curve” and Todd Phillips’ “The Hangover Part III.”

Opening across the Philippines on June 26 in Disney Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters, “Monsters University” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Kris Aquino Hits Sarah Geronimo's Mommy Divine; Inigo Pascual Enters Showbiz with Kiray Celis as Leading Lady

Kris Aquino Hits Sarah Geronimo's Mommy Divine; Inigo Pascual Enters Showbiz with Kiray Celis as Leading Lady

The tactless Kris Aquino strikes anew.

While announcing that his youngest son Bimby Yap will soon star in the MMFF 2013 movie entry “Torky at My Little Bossing” opposite Vic Sotto and Ryzza Mae Dizon, the Queen of All Media likewise made an inappropriate remarks pointing to Sarah Geronimo's mommy Divine as the ultimate stage mother in local showbiz, “Ay naku hindi ako magta-trabaho during this whole time. Kaya kami advance ng advance ng ‘KrisTV’ kasi sinabi ko na sa kanilang lahat na on the days that he’s shooting nakatutok ang nanay. Sabi ko nga, mapapahiya si Mommy Divine sa akin.’

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the statement. You know Kris. We all know Kris. I bet, she meant no harm in that. Pagbigyan na.

***

Another tactless actress - veteran prima-kontrabida Cherie Gil, also made a remark some thought uncalled for during the Gawad Urian 2013 awards night on Tuesday night.

While leaving the stage after accepting his Best Actor trophy for the movie "Posas," Gil, one of the hosts that night, to the dismay of everyone in the venue, told Art Acuña "Congratulations, Art. But I hope you get a stylist next time."

The well-respected theater actor was wearing while long-sleeves shirt and denim jeans while others were in their formal black and white suits.

***

On his Instagram account (@jamesyap18), James Yap posted a picture of him while vacationing in Italy with a white, blonde hair who looked like his newest girlfriend after actress Isabel Oli.

***

Inigo Pascual, son of ultimate heartthrob Piolo Pascual, is also joining showbiz.

Piolo reportedly allowed his 15-year-old US-based to star in an indie film while in the country for vacation.

His leading lady? Kiray Celis?

Joe Torre Daughter Christina Heroically Catches Falling Baby (Video)

Christina  Torre, the daughter of legendary former Yankees manager Joe Torre, amazingly caught a 1-year-old boy who fell from the 2nd floor of an apartment at the 3rd Avenue in Brooklyn on Wednesday, June 19.

The boy crawled through the window of a second-story apartment after pushing aside a piece of cardboard that blocked an opening beside the apartment’s air conditioning unit, according to NYPD Detective James Duffy.

He then climbed onto the fire escape and fell onto the awning of a frozen yogurt shop directly below the apartment and bounced off, Duffy said.

That was when 44-year-old Cristina Torre, who happened to be passing by, saw the situation and positioned herself beneath the awning in time to catch the child, Duffy said.

The boy was taken to Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn and was in stable condition, Duffy said.
Joe Torre released a statement Wednesday night saying, “I am very proud of my daughter Cristina’s actions today during an incident in Brooklyn involving a small child. Fortunately for that child she was in the right place at the right time to lend a hand.”

The boy’s parents were charged with child endangerment, Duffy said. Three other children, aged 2, 3 and 5, were taken into the custody of Child Protective Services.

Jamie Foxx Turns Action Hero President in “White House Down”

Jamie Foxx Turns Action Hero President in “White House Down”

On a roll after his acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning “Django Unchained,” Jamie Foxx now stars as President Sawyer in Columbia Pictures’ new action thriller “White House Down” from director Roland Emmerich.

In the film, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer.  Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save his daughter, the president, and the country.

Producer Bradley J. Fischer says that casting Jamie Foxx was part of the key to defining the tone of the film. “We were hoping to find the right actor to play the President – somebody who could play it in a way that was a little disarming,” says Fischer.  “We were hoping to find an actor who could bring the gravitas of the presidency, but also a comedic element – not jokes, but funny, light moments that would cut the tension.  In a way, Cale and Sawyer are a classic ‘buddy’ pairing.  That’s why Jamie was perfect – he won an Oscar® for the way he can inhabit different characters.  Not only that, but it turned out he has great chemistry with Channing – they played off of each other in a way that we all found incredibly satisfying to watch.  With Channing and Jamie together, the movie is just so much fun.”

Foxx says that the 46th president of the United States is “a man who would do anything to protect America, but also a man who understands that in order to protect America in this day and age, you have to have an understanding of the enemies.  If you don’t have that understanding, or a way to open a dialog, you’ll forever be at odds and something drastic will constantly keep happening.

Emmerich says that screenwriter James Vanderbilt wrote the character of President Sawyer as an interesting counterpoint to Cale.  “When President Sawyer gets elected, he wants to do so much – and then when he’s in the job, it’s not that easy.  He has to spend an inordinate amount of time on the politics of the job,” says Emmerich.  “Whereas Cale’s goal is to try to impress himself and his daughter, the president is holding himself up against greatness – he wants to do something truly presidential, something Lincolnesque.  He wants to be remembered as a great president.  So that is part of the fun of the movie: you have a former soldier battling it out intellectually with the commander in chief as they’re stuck together throughout the movie.”

It’s a complicated role,” says Vanderbilt.  “You have to have a serious side as the President of the United States, but also, the president in our movie has got to be able to play the fun stuff as well.  He’s got to be able to play the physical stuff, the light moments, the dark moments, all of it.  And on top of it all, the actor had to be believable as an electable president and pair well with Channing.  Jamie was a perfect choice.”

In this situation, the President is faced with the beginning of a new world order,” explains Foxx.  “He’s learning that the might of the sword is not always the best course of action.  We bring up some of these political issues, but not too heavy on the political side.  It’s a fresh look at what I would call a super action hero.  Sit down, get ready for the ride, watch Channing go to work and do his thing as Officer John Cale.”

Working with Roland Emmerich was a revelation for Foxx.  “As an actor who wants to be a director, I’d think about the movie and wonder, ‘Wow, the scope!  How is he going to make this cinematic?’  I got to watch him – I got the chance to look over his shoulder and get a peek at his shot list.  It was really a blast.  But Roland was also a great collaborator – he allows you to bring in your own voice, your ideas, and then he shapes them in the way that he can execute the movie – and if you go too far off, he’s there to pull you back in.”

Opening across the Philippines on July 3, “White House Down” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Noli de Castro ‘Kabayan Reports: Gusto Kong Mag-aral’ Docu Special Airs this Sunday

Filipino students in urban areas encounter the usual problems of inadequate classrooms, textbooks, and teachers every year. But this does not compare to what public schoolchildren in remote parts of the country go through each day - even at the peril of their health and lives - just to go to school.

On Sunday (June 23), veteran broadcast journalist “Kabayan” Noli de Castro presents “Kabayan Reports: Gusto Kong Mag-Aral,” a documentary that depicts the extraordinary determination and dedication of these ordinary students to go to school in spite of life-and-death challenges that prevent access to basic and quality education. Kabayan Noli also highlights their teachers’ commitment to their profession, who oftentimes go even beyond the call of duty.

Kabayan personally went to the farthest and most inaccessible villages in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, including a few indigenous communities. There, he experienced firsthand, crossing a river 24 times, just to reach the school in the middle of a forest in Zamboanga City, and climbing steep and muddy slopes with Blaan children to get to their school in Sitio Nabol in Sarangani. He will also report on the plight of schoolchildren in Sitio Paglitao, Antipolo City and Maslog, Eastern Samar.

My heart goes out to the indigenous people,” Kabayan Noli admits, “because their homes are extremely far from their schools. Basic services barely reach them, so the problems in the city are nothing compared to what they have to endure.”

These are just the physical challenges that confront many young Filipino public schoolchildren in the countryside. Although the Department of Education is doing its best to help them, its efforts are hardly felt due in the remote communities.

This Kabayan documentary will demonstrate how the students - as well as their families and teachers -  despite the difficulties, continually strive to study in school to be able to learn and have a better life.

“Kabayan Reports: Gusto Kong Mag-aral” airs this Sunday (June 23) on ABS-CBN Sunday’s Best.” For updates, visit abs-cbnnews.com.
