For the whole month of May in Metro Cebu, GMA's Balitang Bisdak posts an average of 10.4 percent, ahead of TV5's Aksyon Bisaya’s 6.8 percent by 3.6 points and TV5’s national newscast Aksyon’s 9.4 percent by 1.0 point.

In Dagupan, top rating GMA local newscast Balitang Amianan keeps its lead as it registers an average of 10.5 percent, higher than TV5’s T3 Reload’s 6.7 percent by 3.8 points and TV5's Aksyon’s 7.0 percent by 3.5 points.

GMA's Testigo Southern Mindanao in Davao is a clear winner scoring 10.5 percent, 7.1 points ahead of TV5’s T3 Reload’s 3.4 percent and up by 6.4 points against TV5's Aksyon’s 4.1 percent.

Not to be outdone are GMA local morning programs Buena Mano Balita (Cebu), Primera Balita (Dagupan), Una Ka Bai (Davao) and Arangkada (Iloilo) - all winning over their TV5 counterparts in their respective timeslots by considerable margins.

Moreover, GMA maintains its lead over TV5 across all areas based on total day audience share generated for the period of May 1-31. In NUTAM, GMA posts an average of 30.6 percent ahead by 16.8 points from TV5’s 13.8 percent.

"In the Visayas and Mindanao, we are working hard so our local programs cater to the specific needs of our viewers. We hope that as we continue to gain ground, GMA's commitment and goal to be the Filipino's news authority is felt in our local and national news and public affairs programs. We thank our viewers and advertisers for patronizing Kapuso programs as we pledge more improvements in our delivery of news and information in line with Serbisyong Totoo," said Rikki Escudero, GMA Vice President for Regional TV and Head, Expansion & Production Services of GMA News and Public Affairs.

TV5's Drama Princess Eula Caballero Celebrates 18th Birthday

From a simple young Cebuana, Eula Caballero is now one of local showbiz brightest stars as she celebrates her 18th birthday.

TV5’s little angel Eula Caballero is all grown up as she celebrates her 18th birthday. The drama princess, who turned 18 last May 23, celebrated her foray into womanhood with a grand debut held last June 6 at the Oasis Events Place. Invited to the event are Eula’s close friends and family.

The lead star of TV5’s primetime fantaserye Cassandra: Warrior Angel looked every bit like a princess as she made her grand entrance wearing a stunning Ariel Agassang gown. Ang Latest’s host Divine Lee presided over the night’s program that included a twist on the debut’s traditional 18 roses and gifts. 18 Fortunes and 18 Warriors were instead introduced, representing the women and men closest to Eula’s heart. Her girlfriends Valeen Montenegro, Morisette Amon, Kiray Celis, and Tippy dos Santos offered their gifts and wishes to the birthday girl, while her Cassandra: Warrior Angel leading men JC de Vera, Albie Casino, and fellow Kapatid stars Martin Escudero were some of the Warriors who gave their roses and danced with the lovely debutante. The night closed with a touching message from Eula’s mother.

Also present in Eula’s special night were Cassandra: Warrior Angel director Eric Quizon and TV5’s Head of Entertainment and Creative Services Perci Intalan.

Like her character in her popular series, Eula faces new challenges as she enters a new chapter in her life. Despite that, she admits that she is more than ready to handle what the future has in store for her. “I’m really nervous,” she shared. “But I’m thankful din naman. I have my friends and family, and of course, my TV5 family to support me. I’m really thankful for that.”

Miss World 2013 Update: Bikini Out, Sarong In

Miss World 2013 Update: Bikini Out, Sarong In

Miss World organizers have decided to removed the famed bikinis from this year's pageant in Indonesia, replacing the skimpy swimsuits with conservative beach sarongs amid mounting protests from hard-line Muslim groups, organizers said Thursday.

All of the more than 130 contestants will be required to wear Bali's traditional long sarongs instead of the sexy bikinis that are historically part of the competition, said Adjie S. Soeratmadjie of the RCTI, the official broadcaster and local organizer.

Parts of the pageant will take place on the resort island of Bali and the final round will be held Sept. 28 near the capital, Jakarta. Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim country.

"There will no bikini in this year's Miss World pageant to respect our traditional customs and values," Soeratmadjie said, adding that the London-based Miss World Organization is on board with the decision.

"This is a sensitive issue in Indonesia. We have discussed it since last year and they have agreed," he said.

The chairwoman of the Miss World Organization, Julia Morley, confirmed that none of the 137 contestants would wear a bikini.

"Indonesia is designing for us a very beautiful one-piece beachwear, and I'm very happy with them," she told The Associated Press by phone from London, adding that the pageant will include a special beachwear fashion show.

"I don't think Indonesia is the only country that has that culture," Morley said. "But we like to work in the manner respectful to every country, and I cannot see why when you go to somebody's country you should not behave respectfully."

The pageant began in the 1950s, and the first winner was crowned in a two-piece bathing suit.

Soeratmadjie said the sarong would be made creatively and designed specifically for the event.

Controversy over the pageant has been mounting in Indonesia, which has a reputation as a tolerant, pluralist society that respects freedom of expression.

Clerics of the Indonesian Council of Ulema, or MUI, said they would send a letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to demand that the beauty pageant be canceled.

"That contest is just an excuse to show women's body parts that should remain covered," said Mukri Aji, a prominent cleric from West Java province's MUI branch. "It's against Islamic teachings."

Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, a hard-line Islamic group, said it planned to stage a protest and called for the competition to be moved elsewhere.

Most Muslims in Indonesia, a secular country of 240 million people, are moderate, but a small extremist fringe has become more vocal in recent years.

They have pushed through controversial laws - including an anti-pornography bill - and have been known to attack anything perceived as blasphemous, from transvestites and bars to "deviant" religious sects.

Lady Gaga was forced to cancel her sold-out concert in Indonesia in May following threats by Islamic hard-liners, who called her a "devil worshipper." Jennifer Lopez toned down her sexy outfits and dance moves during a show in Jakarta last December. - AP

“The Heat” is On Between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy

“The Heat” is On Between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy

Budding comedy scribe Katie Dippold loved cop movies growing up.  Now a grown up, her love for cop movies continues and had successfully penned the latest Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy starrer “The Heat” directed by Paul Feig.   The estrogen-filled comedy features Sandra Bullock as the uptight FBI agent Sarah Ashburn and Melissa McCarthy as the unorthodox Boston police officer paired together to hunt down a ruthless drug lord.

“The Heat” is the first produced screenplay by Katie Dippold, who has written for television shows like Parks and Recreation and MadTV.  The film was born from Dippold’s love of buddy-cop movies.  She has many favorites, but singles out the 1986 comedy-action film Running Scared, starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines as wisecracking Chicago street cops.  “I’ve always enjoyed those kinds of movies,” says Dippold, who recently signed a deal to write another comedy for director Paul Feig.  “The characters and actors always seemed like they were having so much fun.

Dippold’s love of buddy-cop films provided the foundation for a script that ultimately transcended the genre with outrageous humor and heart.  Feig sparked to the script, calling it “one of the funniest I’ve ever read.”

It turns the genre on its head by adding some breasts,” jokes Bullock.  “It’s gonna surprise people what women with breasts can do.

When the filmmaker told Dippold that “The Heat” was going to be his next film, the neophyte screenwriter was flummoxed. “I thought I was being pranked,” Dippold admits.  “I got an email saying that Paul wanted to have lunch with me.  After reading the email, I sat there frozen for several minutes.  Then, I thought it was a joke.”  “Well, that’s Katie,” says producer Jenno Topping.  “She’s incredibly humble and real.

With Dippold’s first draft in hand, Feig moved at warp speed to cast the film, a task facilitated by his visualizing his “dream team” in the script.  “I’ve always been a fan of Sandra Bullock, and as I was reading I was just like, okay, Ashburn is Sandra.  Ashburn felt like her.  Sandra is so funny in movies and in real life.  She’s confident and cool, but she’s also analytical about things to a point where it’s comical, and which I love.  And that’s how I felt about the Ashburn character.”

Sandra brings a sweet quality to what could have been an unlikable character,” adds Katie Dippold.  “She really nails that ‘A+-student’ vibe, and she’s hilarious.”  And McCarthy notes that, “Sandra is great, funny and weird.  We are very much in sync.”

It didn’t take much convincing to bring Bullock aboard. She was a big fan of “Bridesmaids,” and eager to work with its director, Feig.  “Watching Bridesmaids was one of those rare moments when I thought to myself that this is a person [Feig] I want to work with because you know he is going to make you better – and that he could turn “The Heat” into something memorable.

The strength of the Bullock-McCarthy dynamic, evident even then, inspired additional script fine-tuning.  “By the end of that first read, it was obvious that Sandy and Melissa really inhabited these characters, and that it was up to Katie Dippold and me to take all that magic and get it into the script – and really let the women fly,” says Feig.

For Dippold, the process was liberating.  “Sandy and Melissa took what was on the page and made it funnier than I thought it could ever be,” she says.  A particular favorite came during a Mullins’ tirade against her captain (played by Tom Wilson) – accusing him of lacking a set of testes – when he refuses her demand to boot Ashburn from the case.  “Melissa really ran with the one scripted line, ‘Have you seen the captain’s balls?’ and turned it into something spectacular.”

Rated R-13, “The Heat” opens June 27 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Karylle on Marian Rivera and Dindong Dantes Wedding: "May manners naman ako."

After Marian Rivera, it's Karylle turn now to talk about her recent chanced encounter with the current girlfriend of her ex-Dingdong Dantes.

It was reported that Marian and Karylle bumped and smiled at each other during the 50th anniversary celebration of German Moreno last month at he Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila.

Ang saya, sa totoo lang, na wala nang issue. Hindi na kami aloof sa isa’t isa. Okay na kami. I was really happy na we had that moment kahit papaano. It was a simple gesture but, to me, it meant a lot,” Karylle said in her interview with PEP.

Now that she already laid their past issue to rest, and recently, it was rumored that Dingdong and Marian are already planning their wedding, does it mean she's also willing to attend their wedding?

Mahirap naman ang what if. Ako pa ang nag-invite sa sarili ko na parang ang bastos ko naman. May manners naman ako.”

Siyempre kung sinagot ko iyan, eh ‘di inimbitahan ko na ang sarili ko. Parang maganda naman ang mag-antay. Kahit save the date pa.” she further said.

“After Earth” Opens at No. 1 in the Philippines with P8.72-Million Box-office Gross

Columbia Pictures’ “After Earth” starring Will Smith and Jaden Smith, rocketed to the No. 1 spot of the Philippine box-office, with a first-day gross of P8.72-million yesterday.

This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, managing director of Columbia Pictures Industries, Inc.

Described as the ultimate father and son adventure, “After Earth” dislodged “Fast and Furious 6” from the top box-office spot.

“After Earth” is on track to become one of Will Smith's biggest hits locally. “Coming off last year's blockbuster `Men in Black 3,' Will Smith is definitely on a roll,” said Cabrera. “The film's father-and-son theme is also expected to draw in family audiences, and this bodes well for a huge opening weekend.”

The biggest gross on opening day was recorded by Trinoma at P388,872 followed by SM North EDSA at P301,626 and Power Plant with P289,269.

The fourth to tenth place in the rankings are claimed by SM Megamall (P262,989), SM Mall of Asia (P245,070), Glorietta 4 (P242,280), Greenbelt 3 (P214,497), Alabang Town Center (P203,662), Ayala Cebu (P193,716) and Gateway Cineplex (P191,924).

Also posting impressive results are SM Cebu (P187,020), Robinsons Galleria (P172,051), Gaisano Davo (P152,178), SM Fairview (P148,054), Eastwood (P141,493), Market! Market! (P140,942), Robinsons Ermita (P138,945), SM Clark (P135,694), SM Southmall (P127,009) and Harbor Point (P126,160).

In “After Earth,” a crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

Now playing across the Philippines, “After Earth” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.
