Justine Bateman Re-enters College

Justine Bateman, a mother, blogger and an actress best known for playing Mallory Keaton on Family Ties and few small parts in Modern Family and Psych added one good thing on her credentials, as a freshman student at UCLA taking a degree in Computer Science.

Bateman, the sister of actor Jason Bateman, told LA Currents: “I really, really love to work. I love tech, I was half in it. And when I did a search on Monster.com, no matter the keywords I put in, half the jobs were for computer programmers and developers and I thought, ‘F–k it, I’ll just go be a computer programmer.’ ” the  47-year-old star said.

I was thinking the other day, in what had to have been a PMS-influenced moment, ‘What am I doing? I could just pick the kids up from school every day and go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and get bath mats, etc for the house. What am I doing going to school and doing all this hard work and pursuing one of the most difficult degrees available?’Then I thought, ‘Pull yourself together. You’re not going to feel like this in about 48 hours. Your the one who would stick a fork in your eye if you weren’t working. Get your s–t together.’ ” the mother of two kids, Duke, 10, and Olivia, 9 with husband Mark Fluent further said.

Manny Pacquiao Ban to Fight in the US?

Manny Pacquiao Ban to Fight in the US?

Philippines' Pambansang Kamao may no longer allowed to fight in the U.S. as revealed by Bob Arum, on Friday, May 31.

Arum’s revelation emerged as he was asked about Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s bold decision to take on Mexico’s star unbeaten world super-welterweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 14 in Las Vegas.

Does that stroke by the 36-year-old Mayweather indicate he’s never felt so confident in his abilities? Meaning the long-awaited Pacquiao super-fight could be back on the table next year after Pacquiao fights Oxnard’s former world lightweight champion Brandon Rios on Nov. 23 in Macau, China?

Let’s not even go there,” said Arum, who has failed repeatedly in attempts with Mayweather Jr. and the boxer’s promoter, Richard Schaefer, to stage the super-fight.

By fighting outside the country, as he’s doing in this Rios fight, Manny doesn’t have to pay U.S. taxes anymore – at a rate of 40% for a foreign athlete.

If this pay-per-view and other things take off like we think they may, I can’t imagine Pacquiao will ever again fight in the U.S.

Arum said in addition to holding the fight on the morning of Nov. 24 on the gambling resort locale so the pay-per-view will air live on a Saturday night in the U.S., he’s struck a deal to allow Chinese consumers to purchase Pacquiao-Rios for what equates to $5 to view the bout on their tablets or cellphones.

We could do as many as $10 million to $20 million in sales with this. It changes everything. Will it work? We’ll see in November.”

Arum has also negotiated with resorts in Singapore for a possible future Pacquiao bout. - LA Times

Two Serendra Blast Leaves 3 Dead

Three people were killed and at least four other people were injured in an explosion at Unit 501 of a residential condominium unit at the Two Serendra building at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig at around 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31, police said.

The fatalities were on board a van that was crushed by large chunks of concrete that fell from an upper floor condo unit and into vehicles below, an initial radio dzMM report said.

Skip dela Cruz, who witnessed and took video footage of the aftermath of the explosion, told ABS-CBNNews.com that a Starex van and an Abenson truck were crushed under the huge block of concrete.

The loud blast triggered panic among mall-goers at nearby Market! Market!.

Windows of several establishments were also damaged by the blast.

An eyewitness told ANC it may have come from the 5th floor. "Habang nanonood ako ng TV may biglang sumabog. Nasa 6th floor ako, Unit 610B," eyewitness Rene Boy Curado said.

"Nakita ko 5th floor, wasak na wasak yung 5th floor, yung unit. Nung sumabog siya pinatay ko yung TV ko tapos lumabas ako ng pintuan, paglabas ko ng pintuan, pumasok yung makapal na usok. Biglaang lumabas yung mga residente dito, yung iba nagsisigawan, yung iba nanghihingi ng tulong kasi yung usok nga, makapal yung usok," Curado added.

Gelo Villar, a staff officer of Senator Alan Cayetano who is husband of city Mayor Lani Cayetano, said the condominium unit where the blast originated was being used by a transient occupant.

Villar said the owner of the unit allowed the yet-to-be-identified occupant to use it from May 31 to June 9.

Following the released of video clips showing a portion of previous "Bubble Gang" episode where they took rape as part of their gag, GMA Network has released a statement asking public not to divert focus on something that has happened years ago (check out VIDEO HERE).

The statement also said that all personalities involved in the show have already apologized and imposed a policy not to tackle any sensitive issue in their future shows.

Read below GMA Networks statement:

Video clips of GMA Network’s Entertainment Program “Bubble Gang” have been circulating the past few days showing gags about rape. We would like to clarify that these video clips were aired several years back. In fact, a concerned viewer called the attention of the Network regarding this and the production team of Bubble Gang right away apologized to her and has made it a policy never to tackle the said topic in any of its episodes thereafter.

Bubble Gang has been a top-rating and award-winning program of GMA 7 for almost 18 years. The Network hopes that the program will not be used to divert the attention of the viewers, netizens and the general public from a recent event which has irresponsibly made a joke of this serious topic."

John Lapus "Sweet in a Box" Rated R-13 and Above Due to Its Funny Dirty Gags

Two-time Aliw awardee for Best Comedy Act, actor and TV host John Lapus takes center stage at the Music Museum on June 15, 2013 with his show titled Sweet in a Box. This event will celebrate his 20 fruitful years in the showbiz industry.

Sweet after twenty years is much bolder and spicier. Of course, I will be in my honest, direct to the point punch lines as I tackle life inside the box of showbiz,” said comedian John.

Watch out for my new character Tweetums and the infamous Sweet Anino crying a river while announcing her resignation from showbiz and prepares to embrace politics in 2016.

But wait there’s more, the ending of my show is a must watch! If people know me for my buwis-buhay dance numbers, might as well, let’s do a level up.

The end will showcase Sweet coming out of the box.

He also highlighted that he will be wearing stunning creations of this industry’s fabulous and celebrated fashion designers namely JC Buendia, Pablo Cabahug, Jeffrey Rogador, Tatah Galias, Totoy Madriaga, Bea Albert and Bing Cristobal.

From his humble beginnings as a researcher, Sweet has come full circle as a total entertainer and an award winning actor. With the support of his fellow Star Magic Kapamilya talents Angeline Quinto, Enrique Gil and Xian Lim with the special participation of Jake Cuenca and Julia Clarete.

Audiences can look forward to topnotch live performances from Sweet and his guests.

This show is directed by Phillip Lazaro who also spearheaded Sweet 16, Sweet @ 18, Comic Divas, and the two record-breaking Jose Manalo-Wally Bayola concerts at the Araneta Coliseum.

This is one, very exciting concert!

In fact, we are sending a special reminder to everyone watching.

The show is not the usual doll in the box.

Sweet in a Box concert is recommended for 13 years old and above not for its small parts but because of its dirty parts,” John ends in guffaw.

For ticket inquiries, you may call 0927-7515726 / 0923-9299994 or TicketWorld hotline at Tel. No. 891-9999.

Meet Josh Bowman, Penshoppe Newest Endorser

Meet Josh Bowman, Penshoppe Newest Endorser

Meet Hollywood's current favorite TV leading man and Penshoppe’s newest blockbuster endorser for the brand’s Pre-Holiday, Holiday, Pre-Summer and High Summer collections - Josh  Bowman.

Bowman, whose full name is Joshua Tobias Bowman, is an actor who was born in England but now calls L.A. his home. Two years ago, his fame skyrocketed when Revenge, the drama series he stars in, became that year’s hottest and most popular television drama on American TV. The plot of the series revolves around Daniel, his character in the series, and his relationship with the mysterious Emily, portrayed in the series by his real-life girlfriend Emily VanCamp, who was out to get revenge against Daniel’s parents who Emily thinks were behind the murder of her father. The show just ended its second season and will return for Season 3 in the fall.

Read below conversation of Josh Bowman with Raymond de Asis Lo as published in The Philippine Star:

You’ve already tried on the Penshoppe clothes, what can you say about the brand?

I love it! I love the high-street sort of brand. I like the tailored clothes. It’s nice, sort of fitted and that smart and casual look that I always liked. I think it’s a great brand and people should buy Penshoppe.”

Is this your first international campaign?

This is my first campaign and endorsement, thanks to Laura (Josh’s agent who helped broker this blockbuster deal).”

What do you consider in a brand before agreeing to do the endorsement?

I am pretty new to all of it. But I think something that I believe in, that I would definitely gravitate towards because I don’t want to be saying things that I don’t actually believe in. But I actually do like the product. I didn’t have to think too much about it.

What convinced you to endorse this brand?

My agent gave me a lot of information about it, we talked about it and I did my own research and saw the other people who were endorsing the brand (Josh joins international celebrities Zac Efron, One Direction, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Ian Somerhalder and Thai star Mario Maurer as Penshoppe’s top endorsers). I like high-street fashion… It is affordable and it’s great. It’s current — they keep on top of trends... I think the key is affordable because some people obviously don’t want to go out and spend a crazy amount of money on a pair of trousers or a shirt when really they make the same thing just for a less expensive price. Even if I were a millionaire, I would always buy something that is more affordable.”

What was your initial reaction when Laura told you about the offer from Penshoppe?

Thank you very much!” (He smiled brightly in the direction of Laura, who broke her silence and joined our conversation briefly. “He was excited!” Laura recalled.)

Did you know that you have this huge following in the Philippines because of Revenge?

I didn’t know. I don’t really keep on top of it, to be honest. I just worry about my work and worry about getting my next job and getting better myself. That’s their job (referring to his agent) to stamp their approval on that and do their research and look for those kinds of endorsements and campaigns and mine is to back that up, I guess, and stay good, stay hardworking on my craft, which is acting.

As an actor, what is your sense of style? Do you follow fashion trends?

I do follow fashion. I do. I do. GQ is I think a great magazine to follow. I look at what other people are wearing and my friends in London, when I go back home. When I travel, it is interesting to see different styles. I don’t really pick things that are, like, ‘Oh, he’s wearing that, I should wear that.’ I always pick things that I just find cool and casual. I wouldn’t say I have this specific style, sometimes I can be a bit preppy, sometimes I can be very surfery (sic) because I surf a little bit, but maybe when I’m going out for lunch or something I will be a little bit smarter or I’ll wear Toms with a T-shirt. I don’t really wear any wacky colors.

This was the part of the interview when we had a momentary detour after I pointed to the bright salmon-colored Penshoppe pants he was wearing during our interview and asked if it was wacky enough for him.

This is not a wacky color for me. I will actually wear this. In fact, I think I have a pair of this.”

It wouldn’t look good on me.

What do you mean? Why not?

I am too short!

Too short?

I can’t wear something that’s too colorful.

What do you mean? Why not?

 I don’t know.

You’ll look like a cherry?

Probably.

Or strawberry!

Josh erupted in laughter by how funny our interview suddenly became. We were laughing for about half a minute when I realized that I only had a limited time with him. I gathered myself and quickly went on to the next question.

But as an actor, does your sense of style affect your work?

What kind of work? This work? There are different types of work for me. I don’t think I am particularly good at this stuff (referring to his fashion endorsement) but what I really sort of get off on is working on a set or working on a stage or working in front of a camera and working on a character and that’s work and it doesn’t affect what I wear. No, I don’t think that at all.

I was trying to google you the other day because I was preparing for this interview and I couldn’t find anything about you in the news. All I got was your Wikipedia page! How do you that? How do you avoid the paparazzi when you are this popular?

I definitely have my fair run-in with the paparazzi. I don’t like attracting attention to myself. I don’t talk about my private life. I keep work to work and I have always, sort of, respected people who do that and I think that’s the key specially now with the last few years of my life with Revenge.”

Your career really took up with Revenge!

Yeah, with Revenge, it did! Because of the fans and we have wonderful fans and people who watch it. A lot of people internationally watch it, which is fantastic.”

Did you always know it was going to be big?

No, not at all, not at all! Halfway through the first season, it got a big response and then it just got bigger and bigger and then internationally it started showing everywhere!

Some people know you as Daniel more than your first name.

Yeah. More than my name so now that makes me think to, you know, do something different.”

But it’s good, right?

Yeah. I guess but I think now they have something that, you know, they’re going to watch me act and the next thing I do will be very, very different to this and that’s what I am looking at.

Do you have new projects that you’re working on? Movies?

I am looking at things now. I am waiting to see on a couple of things.”

What do you do when you’re in-between tapings, in-between work?

I do travel. I like to travel and get out Los Angeles — I think it is important to travel. I like to disappear and I like to spend time with my friends and just be me, really. It’s nice to be me, speaking my own accent, you know.”

How about the Philippines? Any plans?

I am going to be there at some point. (Josh’s agent indicated that that they were working on a date.)”

Girls in Manila are going to get crazy.

Really? That’s very, very nice!

Before we concluded the interview, we did a quick fan Q&A of his favorites, which Josh willingly obliged.

Favorite color?

Blue. Navy blue.

Favorite food?

I do love noodles. Anything with chicken (with the skin on, he said) can’t really go wrong with me. I don’t think I’ve had Filipino food yet.”

Favorite movie?

Maybe Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. True Romance. Godfather 2 but that is so predictable being an actor but the Godfather movies are so phenomenal.”

Favorite actor?

Gary Oldman has always been a favorite of mine. Daniel Day-Lewis always gives a great performance. Gene Hackman and Paul Newman.

Favorite actress?

“(Meryl) Streep, I guess. I am always just as astounded at how she effortlessly changes characters but still stays within herself. It’s remarkable!

Do you think you can act at all with her?

When I get to sleep at night, I dream of that. It would be unbelievable!

How about your favorite country to visit?

Philippines! Yeah!

And your favorite Philippine brand?

Penshoppe!

ABS-CBN Receives ‘Most Trusted TV Network’ Award in Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards 2013

ABS-CBN Corporation was again named the most trusted Philippine TV network by consumers after it recently received its third Gold award from the annual Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards organized by Reader’s Digest Asia-Pacific.

ABS-CBN was among the top scorers and beat its competitors in the TV Network category based on the results of the Trusted Brands survey conducted by Ipsos, the world’s third largest market research company, in eight Asian markets namely China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

The Kapamilya network earned the ultimate seal of consumer approval after survey participants, composed of Reader’s Digest Asia subscribers together with randomly selected consumers, gave ABS-CBN high ratings based on the qualitative criteria of Trustworthiness & Credibility, Quality, Value, Understanding of Customer Needs, Innovative and Social Responsibility.

ABS-CBN Broadcast Head Cory Vidanes, ABS-CBN Corporate Marketing Head Cookie Bartolome, and ABS-CBN TV Production Head Lauren Dyogi received the Gold Trusted Brand Award personally handed out by Sue Carney, editor-in-chief of Reader’s Digest Asia Pacific, in an awarding ceremony held last Thursday (May 23) at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel.

ABS-CBN first bagged the Gold Trusted Brand award for the TV Network category in 2010 and received a back-to-back win as it won the same award in 2011. This is the third time Reader’s Digest Asia-Pacific recognized ABS-CBN’s appeal to the Asian market.

Launched in 1999, the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brands Survey in Asia is conducted annually and is now on its 14th year. It seeks to identify which brands consumers in Asia trust and provides an objective and reliable reference for consumers throughout the region.

GMA News TV's 'Reel Time' Receives Peabody Award in New York

"Reel Time" GMA News TV's documentary program was awarded with the George Foster Peabody Award during the awards ceremony held in New York’s Waldorf-Astoria on May 20.

The Kapuso program earned the said honor for its episode titled "Salat (Bone Dry)." First aired on GMA News TV on July 29, 2012, this docu revealed that one child dies every 15 seconds because of hunger.

According to a release furnished by GMA, Reel Time's award-winning "Salat" inspired Grace Poe to set up an elementary school lunch program after watching the documentary.

This is the Philippines' third Peabody Award, which is considered the Pulitzer Prize for broadcast journalists.

In 1999, GMA Network became the first Philippine TV network to receive a Peabody Award for Investigative Reporting.

It was honored for its "outstanding commitment to investigative reporting and for its efforts to achieve social change."

In 2010, Kara David's I-Witness documentary, titled "Ambulansiyang de Paa," was one of the winners in the 69th Peabody Awards.

Program manager Nowell Cuanang together with the Reel Time production team behind the award-winning episode - executive producer Sharon Masula, director Aaron Mendoza, and researcher Mike Cristobal - were all present to receive the trophy during the 72nd Annual Peabody Awards in New York.

"This award is for all children in the world who are victims of malnutrition. Our subject Mary Rose, inspite of hunger, remains hopeful and still continues to dream," said Cuanang, who was overwhelmed by the award being one of only two Asian entries together with Japan’s NHK to be included in this year’s list of winners.

The 2013 Peabody Awards’ theme was achieving excellence and overcoming mediocrity. Only 39 entries chosen from all over the world were honored by the award-giving body that aims to honor the "best in electronic media for the year 2012."

Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 Grand Finals Gathers the Best Pinoy Act this Weekend

Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 Grand Finals Gathers the Best Pinoy Act this Weekend

The most diverse ultimate showdown of Filipino talents happens this Saturday (June 1) and Sunday (June 2) as the country’s biggest and grandest talent-reality show “Pilipinas Got Talent” concludes its fourth season via its much-awaited grand finals to be held at the PAGCOR Grand Theater in Paranaque.

From 29,000 hopefuls who auditioned worldwide and online, only six acts remain to compete for the coveted title as the fourth PGT Grand Winner and win a whopping P2 million cash prize.

The final six includes:

Daring dancers from Batangas, D’ Intensity Breakers

Ringman from Tondo, Frankendal Fabroa

Driving heartthrobs from Manila, Lateral Drift Productions

Unconventional acoustic trio from Davao, the MP3 Band

Child prodigy from Bukidnon, Roel Manlangit

Blacklight dancers from Pasig, Zilent Overload

Since season one, “Pilipinas Got Talent” has not only realized the dreams of hopefuls that have set foot on the PGT stage, but has also changed their lives in many ways.

Just like the boys of D’ Intensity Breakers who will give everything just to win PGT even if it means having to perform with a broken arm, which one of them did during the quarterfinals. The dance group was formed in one of the famous plazas in Lipa, Batangas by their leader Arjay and most of them didn’t really have formal training in dancing or death-defying stunts back then. Every day they work hard to pursue their dreams as a group and at the same time work hard to survive since some of them work as ballot vendors, jeepney barkers, garbage collectors, fishball vendors, etc.

If the boys of D’ Intensity Breakers are out on the streets to find a living, Frankendal Fabroa went as far as going to Japan just to earn and provide for his family. Now dubbed as the ringman of Tondo for his amazing dance act that makes use of metal rings, the now single dad went through a tough time when he separated from his wife and even lost one of his children. His stint in PGT paved the way for him to reconnect with his wife again.

As for drifting hotties Gio and Ralph of Lateral Drift Productions, they may be well-off in life but they share the same amount of thirst and passion in winning the competition as the other grand finalists. They started drifting and racing during their teenage years, and their being finalists in PGT already made a mark as they are the first car drifting act in the history of the program. With their good looks and rare talent, Gio and Ralph instantly gained popularity, especially among female fans.

Meanwhile, like any other aspiring music artists, Aries, LJ, and Makoy of MP3 band consider being on the show their much-awaited break to get into the local music scene. As musicians, they hope to create a new genre in music that fuses acoustic guitars, rap, conventional Pinoy music, and beatboxing. They may have not won the competition yet but MP3 band has already established its own fan base and has created a strong following among music fans online.

Also out to prove himself is YouTube sensation 13-year-old Roel Manlangit. PGT’s youngest grand finalist this season is not new to fame as he first created a buzz online. With more than 2 million views on YouTube and a growing number of local and international fans, Roel is set to rebuild his family’s life with his talent especially after their home was washed out during Typhoon Pablo.

The dream doesn’t seem that far as well for this season’s biggest contingent Zilent Overload, which is composed of 39 members. Just like their black light dance, all 39 of them have experienced being though very dark times as they were all victims of typhoon Ondoy and Habagat. Despite this, they managed to gather themselves up and worked hard for their passion to perform. The group used to work in a junkshop so that they could buy their props and costumes. But after being seen on PGT, they can now easily solicit funds from their neighbors and friends.

The grand finalists’ fate solely lies in the hands of the viewing public as winners will be determined based on the results of the combined online and text votes.

Who among the six acts will emerge on top? Who will impress Big Three judges Kris Aquino, Ai Ai Delas Alas, and Freddie “FMG” Garcia? Who will follow the footsteps of PGT season one’s Jovit Baldivino, PGT season two’s Marcelito Pomoy, and PGT season three’s Maasinhon Trio?

Don’t miss the final performance night this Saturday (June 1) after “MMK,” and find out who will become grand winner this season in the final results night on Sunday (June 2), after “Rated K” on ABS-CBN. Tweet your thoughts on the show using the hashtag #PGT4.
