The Google+ Hangout brought together some of the world’s most renowned thinkers, inventors, authors, and futurists to discuss the film’s themes and the future of our planet.

The After Earth Day Google+ Hangout was moderated by futurist Ray Kurzweil, Google’s director of engineering. Joining Kurzweil was Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and the co-founder of Tesla Motors and PayPal; the environmental advocate, explorer and filmmaker Alexandra Cousteau, granddaughter of Jacques-Yves Cousteau; NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, an Indian American astronaut and a United States Navy officer who holds the record for longest space flight by a woman; and Jaden Smith and Will Smith, the stars of After Earth.

On the literal day after Earth Day, they discussed the future that awaits the human race on Planet Earth, in the context of the overall themes of the action-adventure. After Earth will inspire a conversation focusing on the important questions we face about the present state of the planet, the future, and the environment. The participants also explored the interaction of technology development, space travel, and ecological preservation.

In After Earth, a crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.

38 Die in Mental Hospital Tragedy

38 Die in Mental Hospital Tragedy

At least 38 people die after a fire swept quickly through a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow early Friday.

Health Ministry officials said that the one-story hospital housed patients with severe mental disorders. Vadim Belovoshin from the emergency situations ministry official told the Itar-TASS news agency that the windows in the hospital were barred but said there were two fire escapes.

Belovoshin also said that it took fire fighters an hour to get to the hospital following an emergency call because a ferry across the canal was closed and the fire fighters had to make a detour.

Officials from the Russian Investigative Committee said they are looking at poor fire regulations and short circuit as possible causes for the hospital fire in the Ramenskoye settlement.

Investigators listed 38 people - 36 patients and two doctors - as dead. Only one nurse and two patients managed to escape, according to the health ministry. The emergency services also posted a list of the patients indicating they ranged in age from 20 to 76.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyev told Russian state-television that the fire alarm seems to have worked but the fire spread too quickly. Belovoshin said the fire first broke in a wooden annex.

A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee told Russian news agencies that most of the people died in their beds and did not try to escape.

Deadly fires are common in Russia because of wide-spread violations of fire safety rules.

The Gretchen Barretto vs. Claudine Barretto Saga Continue: Another Family's Best-Kept Secrets Revealed

The Gretchen Barretto vs. Claudine Barretto Saga Continue: Another Family's Best-Kept Secrets Revealed

I don't know if anyone will disagree on me (with the Barretto's as an exception, of course) that family matters, no matter how rough and tough your situation are in right now should not be discuss in public.

But in the case of the controversial showbiz sisters Gretchen Barretto and Claudine Barretto, the rest of their family members decided to sacrifice their private lives just for the sake of what they called "saving their family intact" (I still don't see the point in here).

After the open letter sent by Barretto matriarch Mommy Inday to showbiz columnist Ricky Lo was published at Philippine Star  on Wednesday, April 24 (read HERE) bearing shocking revelations clearly disowning daughter Gretchen in favor and defense of youngest daughter Claudine, another Barretto, this time from Joaquin - the only guy in the siblings - released a signed statement refuting their mom's messages while taking Gretchen's side (read HERE).

While Mommy Inday declines to further comment on the issue, another Barretto (yes, you read it right) now comes out of the open to air her side of the long family story.

Gia Barretto-Reyes, one of the siblings who lives in Massachusetts in the US, released a statement directly addressing to Gretchen asking her to leave their family alone.

Read below:

I respect that you do not want to be part of our family. At this point, we welcome it.

Not at any point do I ever recall us forcing you to be part of us but we have never also alienated you during the times when you wanted to be with us. Even during the times when you battled with one of us.

I say us because you have time and time again made extreme efforts to push us — mom, dad and all of us — away. You have hurt us in ways that put the word decency to shame, you have had no rules when you attacked us. If the attack were physical then it would be bearable. Bruises heal. But the attack has always been vicious, below the belt and so evil that the wound borne from it cannot heal. It is done repeatedly and unsparingly with permanent damage in mind. You have tried to put mom and dad to shame with empty allegations without thinking that you, whether you like it or not came from them. You ridicule them in front of friend, strangers and us. And, you expect us to just take it.

Your claims of financial support for this family have no basis, because dad always managed to provide. For the record, we may not have been so rich but we were never poor. 1. We live in big beautiful houses 2. Slept in carpeted, air-conditioned rooms, 3. Food galore. 4. Put in an exclusive school. 5. Members of exclusive country clubs. 6. We each have our own yayas, yours even a midwife. 7. Driven by chauffeurs.

Long before you were born and even after you were in show business. At 12 years old, could you have duplicated or taken over this kind of a style, with your meager earnings? We did not have an excess of things but we had what we needed. You were never forced to get into show business. I remember very clearly how you ran to the middle of the road when dad said “no” to you entering show business. He believed that school was important. How sad that you cannot distinguish the lies that you make up and reality.

No Gretchen, it was not you who helped us during rough spots. It was Claudine. You could not in the life of you convince her that our parents were abusive ones. It was difficult for you to accept that there was somebody who actually had pure intentions of helping where help was needed. You once told me and I quote, “I just disappear when things get tough.” You have become great at these disappearing acts. Claudine made an effort to be there always. Just a few corrections: Claudine paid for my med at UBC just as she paid for a lot of our nieces and nephews education. She gave them (our nieces and nephews), iPads, iPhones, concert tickets, clothes and so much more. She spoiled all of us not because she needed to but she wanted to. She unlike you, has never equated her value with money or material possessions.

JJ comments on TV are only credible in as far as he is caught between a rock and a hard place, because he is in your employ. It honestly pains me to see that you could put him in this situation. To pick between that and his parents.

I echo mom’s words, “Stop it.” We get it. We know you don’t want us so please hear us now...”We do not want you, too.” Please stop hounding us like an attack dog. We will admit defeat if you just leave us in peace. Just totally disappear from our lives without leaving a trail of vile and misery. Please.

Enough is enough! Leave us alone. Leave my family alone.

A New Primetime Star is Born in Eula Caballero

Eula Caballero has come a long way since winning TV5’s first talent competition Star Factor back in 2010. Back then, the petite Cebuana admitted to being nervous, reserved, and quite unsure of the career path she has chosen. “When I entered showbiz, siyempre talagang kinabahan ako,” the young actress shared. “My parents warned me na hindi madali maging artista. We’re not from a showbiz family. We did not know what to expect. Even so, my family still supported me. Gusto ko talaga ‘to. I really want to be an actress.”

With her family’s unwavering support and the network’s confidence, Eula took on the challenges that came her way. In a short span of time, the shy teen has transformed into a confident and mature young woman. Her career already boasts of recognitions for her breakthrough performances from projects such as Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (2011) and Sa Ngalan Ng Ina. She has also worked with the country’s most acclaimed actors, including Maricel Soriano, Gabby Concepcion, Christopher de Leon, Lorna Tolentino, Eddie Garcia and Nora Aunor.

Sobrang thankful ako sa TV5. Hindi nila ako pinabayaan. Everything they have done for me - all the hard work, the shows they’ve given me, the training, and workshops - I feel all of that has prepared me for this moment,” Eula said.

Eula is referring to what she considers the biggest role of her life - playing the titular character in TV5’s upcoming primetime epic fantasy series Cassandra: Warrior Angel. “Siyempre I feel a lot of pressure!” Eula said with a nervous laugh. “This is the first time that I will be a lead on a daily primetime series. Tapos sobrang successful pa nung mga shows na sinundan namin - Enchanted Garden and Kidlat. So yeah, I am a bit nervous. But I’m confident din naman with the production team and cast of Cassandra. Sobrang galing ng mga tao [behind Cassandra] and we’re all doing what we can to make this show as great as [its predecessors].”

Catch Eula as she spread her wings and face a new chapter in her life with Cassandra: Warrior Angel, coming this May on TV5.

“Iron Man 3” Smashes Philippine Box-Office Record, Earns P62.6-Million on Opening Day

“Iron Man 3” Smashes Philippine Box-Office Record, Earns P62.6-Million on Opening Day

Tony Stark rewrote the record books, as Marvel's “Iron Man 3” debuted yesterday to a stunning P62.6-million – the biggest first-day gross ever in Philippine history, foreign or local film.

This was announced today by Victor R. Cabrera, Managing Director of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Philippines, which distributed the movie.

`Iron Man 3' flew off the box office chart, soaring past the stratosphere to break the country's all-industry, all-time Opening Day records,” said Cabrera. “P62-M in one day is previously unheard of. What a boost to the industry!

The third “Iron Man” installment surpassed the opening day record of “Spider-Man 3” at P58-million which was achieved on a May 1 Labor Day holiday back in 2007.

“Iron Man 3” now also owns the biggest Wednesday gross ever in history, the biggest Marvel/Disney opening day ever, beating “Marvel's The Avenger's” record of P56-M last year.

To put this further in perspective, the opening day gross of “Iron Man 3” is double that of “Iron Man 2.”

Marve/Disney projects “Iron Man 3” to continue doing outstanding box-office business towards the weekend.

Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, the iconic Super Hero, along with Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan and Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin.

Now playing across the Philippines in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular theatres, “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. The film is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Philippine Showbiz' Upcoming Biggest Child Star Andrea Brillantes Now Ready to Make Viewers Cry in ‘Annaliza’

Rising teleserye princess Andrea Brillantes is thoroughly preparing to reprise the role of Annaliza as she soon takes the lead in the remake of the classic 80s hit soap that truly made a mark on Philippine television.

After undergoing workshops with top directors and acting mentors in the industry, Andrea further immersed in her character as a young girl who grew in a fish port by bonding with kids from Navotas, where the promo shoot for the show was recently held. Annaliza is an endearing and heartwarming family drama that centers on the enduring love and fighting spirit of a child despite all the struggles and miseries in her life. She will go through challenges that seem to be insurmountable, especially for a child like her, but will manage to conquer it all with her innocence, innate goodness and ability to love unconditionally.
