TV5's Dokyuserye ‘Balwarte’ Traces Families Reigning at Cebu’s Political Throne

Paolo Bediones takes a closer look at Cebu’s political landscape to see which families reign in one of the country’s most important bulwarks.

Considered the Queen City of the South, Cebu is one of the most vital provinces in the country as it is the center of commerce in the Southern Philippines. Come May this year, the city’s 2.5 million registered voters will be vital in dictating the fate of those vying for national positions. It is no surprise that local politicians want to assume posts in the Queen City’s public throne as a result of Cebu’s national influence. This Sunday on dokyuserye Balwarte, Paolo Bediones takes a closer look at Cebu’s political landscape to see which families reign in one of the country’s most important bulwarks.

Just before the year 2012 bid goodbye, the vote-rich province of Cebu made headlines following the Office of the Ombudsman’s resolution to suspend Governor Gwendolyn Garcia. Her deputy, Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, was ordered to fill the vacancy. But the transition was anything but smooth. In what was considered the “capitol standoff,” suspended Gov. Garcia refused to leave her office at the provincial capitol without a fight.

Which clans control the province’s seat of power? And just how important is Cebu in the eyes of those running for national positions?

Join Paolo Bediones on Balwarte as he flips through Cebu’s political history this Sunday (February 24), 11PM on TV5 and Aksyon TV. More show-related information is available online via the show’s official Facebook page (Balwarte) and Twitter account @balwarte2013.

'Banana Nite' and 'Martin Late@Night' Soon on ABS-CBN

Martin Nievera is returning to ABS-CBN's late-night time slot as he resumes his stint as a talk-show host in the revival of his late-night talk show "Martin Late@Night".

Martin share the news on his Twitter account: "Your late night will never be the same. You asked for it you got it! “Martin Late@Night”- FRIDAY MARCH 1st. Where else, but on ABS-CBN CH.2,"

The announcement of Martin's new show comes after the announcement of the Kapamilya network's new late night gag show "Banana Nite" starring Angelica Panganiban, John Prats, Zanjoe Marudo, Jason Gainza, Pooh, Melai Cantiveros, Ryan Bang, and many more.

Dubbed as the "daily serving" of weekly gag show “Banana Split”, the new show aims to lighten the mood of weary viewers after a long day’s work. The tagline shouts “Tara na at makibaka, makitawa. Tama na, tawa na!

It’s exciting how we’re going from weekly to nightly,” said Angelica Panganiban, one of the main casts of the show. “We’re inviting viewers to watch out for Banana Nite. We have a lot of treats in store, from new segments to new cast members,” she added.

The show will feature new segments such as “Ihaw Na” and “Krissy and Me”, guest artists like Bea Alonzo, Iza Calzado, and Joey Marquez, and explosive production numbers. Timely spoofs and gags will also be included in the lineup, just like in the original “Banana Split” which will still air every Saturday.

“Banana Nite” will premiere on Monday (February 25). It will air weeknights after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

In an interview with Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal, published on Wednesday, February 20, Sunshine said that after being married to Cesar for 13 years, she believes it is time to set her husband free.

"I just realized I did everything for the man I loved for the past 13 years. I fought, lied and cried just to protect the love of my life pero sabi nga nila kung mahal mo ang tao set him free. I'm doing what I think is best. After all, if you feel na hindi na masaya o kontento ang tao sa 'yo, bakit kailangang ipilit," she said.

She further that if her life story were to be made into a movie, it should be titled "I Loved You, Goodbye."

ABS-CBN Statement on Libel Case Filed by GMA-7

Here is the official press statement released by ABS-CBN through its Head of Integrated Corporate Communications Mr. Bong R. Osorio regarding the libel case filed by GMA-7 against ABS-CBN executives and journalist (read related article HERE):

"The respondents to the libel case have voluntarily surrendered to the court and posted bail in accordance with law.

They nevertheless firmly maintain that the libel charge has no basis in fact and law. In truth, it was the complainant who used ABS-CBN footage without its authority and consent and was thus charged by ABS-CBN with copyright infringement.

The respondents will avail themselves of all legal remedies to question the findings of probable cause for the arrest warrants issued by the RTC of Quezon City. It is unfortunate that the respondents are being pilloried as criminals, when in fact, it was ABS-CBN whose rights were violated.

They are confident that this libel suit will eventually be dismissed."

Willie Revillame Donates Personal Coaster Van to Our Lady of Fatima Nuns in Support of Their Charity Projects

It’s not a rare occasion that main host Willie Revillame gives out cash prizes to lucky studio members on TV5 noontime show Wowowillie. In fact, he promised that those coming from far-flung provinces - some would even borrow money just to try their luck in the noontime show - can reimburse their transportation expenses when they watch the show at its newly-refurbished, 1,100-capacity studio along Quezon Avenue.

Last Tuesday (February 19), to everyone’s surprise, the generous host veered from the usual shouldering of transport expenses and instead gave away his personal van to one of the studio members. Dressed like the revered Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Sister Theresa of the Cenacle of Virgin Mary (a community of nuns from Our Lady of Fatima under the Diocese of Pasig) was overwhelmed when Kuya Wil pledged to give her his 25-seater coaster. This after the nun told Kuya Wil that their growing community lacks a means of transport whenever they do outreach programs. “Ang kailangan po ng aming community, dahil napakarami po namin, wala po kaming sasakyan,” Sister Theresa said.

Live on national TV, Kuya Wil turned over the van to Sister Theresa and her companions. Furthermore, the charismatic host handed the nun P50,000 from the show’s fund to help those who want to join the vocation.

Wowowillie business unit head Jay Montelibano said Kuya Wil (a known luxury car collector) could not easily let go of the coaster since the three-year old vehicle is his transport-of-choice especially during long-distance trips. “It (coaster) means a lot to him as it's his mode of transport from his house in Quezon City to [his townhouse in] Tagaytay or to the airport as he normally doesn't travel alone,” he shared. “The coaster is used by him, his very close friends and relatives.”

Aside from giving away cash and prizes, Wowowillie also brings together Filipinos in the genuine spirit of goodwill. Kuya Wil also continues to touch people's lives by giving them renewed hope that gets them through their everyday struggles. Wowowillie airs on TV5 from Monday to Saturday at 11:30AM.

Michelle Williams is the Good Witch Glinda in “Oz The Great and Powerful”

Michelle Williams is the Good Witch Glinda in “Oz The Great and Powerful”

Three-time Academy Award-nominee Michelle Williams (“My Week With Marilyn”) plays Glinda, the Good Witch who tries to convince Oscar (James Franco) that the Land of Oz is in trouble at the hands of the evil Evanora, in Walt Disney Pictures’ fantastical adventure “Oz the Great and Powerful.

At the same time, Glinda is hoping Oscar is the answer to the land’s prophecy - that a wizard will someday come and restore order.

Director Sam Raimi says of casting Williams for the role, “Michelle has a real positive spirit and depth of soul. She’s a good person and I needed that in the actress who was going to play Glinda.”

I play two characters in the film,” Williams states. “In the opening of the film, I play a Kansas farm girl named Annie, Oscar’s girlfriend, and then Glinda, the Good Witch. She’s the younger version of the Glinda that we all know from the books. I think of my Glinda as a witch at the beginning of developing those powers.”

Michelle plays Oscar/Oz’s love interest, first in the form of Annie, his childhood sweetheart, then as Glinda,” director Raimi elaborates. “Annie is someone who sees the good man that he is inside, even though he’s gotten lost somewhere along the way. She tries to bring him out, but he’s so blinded by his dream of fame and fortune and this vision of becoming a great man he has in his head that he doesn’t see the riches that lie right before him in this woman.”

Raimi adds, “Later, when Oscar is transported to Oz, he meets Annie again, this time in the form of Glinda, Annie’s alter ego. It’s in this new form of Glinda that Oz is finally able to consummate the love story that his limited character couldn’t back in Kansas. In Oz, he grows into a greater man, a man who values others as much as himself and only then does he become worthy of Glinda’s love.”

Williams herself found the project “to be a dream on a couple of levels. For me, to work every day with Sam and this cast while existing in the space of Glinda the Good Witch was such fun. I was excited to be there every day.

Sam is an incredible collaborator,” continues Williams. “From the moment we met and started rehearsals, I felt whatever idea I had, good or bad, would excite him, and that really encouraged me to continue to offer him ideas. He was a great inspiration for me.

Being able to work with people like Sam who are really at the top of their game was so exciting,” she continues with her praise for both the film’s artistry and the experience itself. “The sets and the costumes were beyond my expectations. I couldn’t imagine things that big and that beautiful, and I got to play inside of that world everyday,” she concludes.

Williams hopes “that audiences are transported by this magical journey into another realm where anything is possible, where the best is possible, and the best in human nature is really celebrated. I wanted to make a movie that my daughter could see, and I was really excited to be part of something that had an overall good message, one that wasn’t tainted with sarcasm. It’s a movie that you can take your whole family to see.”

Opening across the Philippines on Thursday, March 7 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular theaters, “Oz The Great and Powerful” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Angelica Panganiban - John Lloyd Cruz Separation Coming?

Denied!

Angelica Panganiban vehemently denied reports that due to their busy schedule she and real-life boyfriend John Lloyd Cruz don’t get to spend much time together anymore that could lead to an early separation.

May ginagawa ako, nagte-taping ako [Apoy Sa Dagat opposite PioloPascual] tapos nagshu-shooting siya [It Takes a Man and a Woman with Sarah Geronimo]. Actually sabay naman 'yung schedule namin, every three times a week kami nagtatrabaho so every other day magkasama namin kami,” Angelica told in an interview with TV Patrol on Tuesday, February 19.

Angel also stressed that their equally hectic schedule has never became an issue to either both of them.

Hindi naman namin napag-aawayan. Noong una tinatanong ko siya, 'Ganyan ka ba talaga kasikat? Kasi sobra kang busy.' Parang wala talaga siyang time, nagkikita lang kami kapag weekends. Dati kasi sanay ako na may time sa akin 'yung lalaki. Pero ngayon kapag nagkikita naman kami, talagang sagad, sulit talaga ang mga oras namin,” she said.

Angelica also clarified reports that Lloydie was spotted going out on “gimmicks” without her.

Wala.

In her previous interview, Angelica said her relationship with Lloydie is getting stronger each day.

Actually siguro 'yung problema namin, wala kaming issue na mapagtalunan. Laging okay, laging nagtutugma ang mga gusto namin,” she said.

Lea Salonga - The Voice Philippines Coach (Video)

Renowned singer and Tony Award-winning performer Lea Salonga will be joining singer-actress Sarah Geronimo and former Rivermaya and Bamboo frontman Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac in the judges/coach seat of the Philippine edition of the reality singing contest "The Voice".

The 41-year-old Filipina singer, whose 35-year career has taken her to the international stage, announced the news on micro-blogging site Twitter Tuesday night.

As in the United States version of the show - which featured as coaches Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine for its first three seasons - the local edition of "The Voice" will have four teams battling it out.

In order to form their teams, the coaches will hold "Blind Auditions," where their backs are turned to the contestants. Only the voice will be the determining factor in prompting the coaches to push their button, turning their chair around, to signal their intention to recruit the contestant.

Hosted by Toni Gonzaga, "The Voice of the Philippines" is currently holding auditions in time for its premiere telecast later this year on ABS-CBN (click HERE to read AUDITION DATES AND VENUES).

Weekend Box Office Results:“A Good Day to Die Hard” Tops Box-Office at P45.5 Million

Weekend Box Office Results:“A Good Day to Die Hard” Tops Box-Office at P45.5 Million

Bruce Willis’ highly-explosive actioner “A Good Day To Die Hard” spiraled at the top of the local (Phils.) box-office with a total of P45.5 million on its opening weekend (Feb. 13-17).

The fifth installment of the blockbuster “Die Hard” series has shattered (local) records making it the Biggest Opening Weekend of all Die Hard movies and has now climbed up as this year’s Biggest Opening Weekend for a Fox film so far surpassing the highly-acclaimed “Life of Pi” by Ang Lee (released in January).

As evidenced by its opening weekend box-office, the fifth installment of the Die Hard series packed in a hefty volume of the movie going public who flocked into theaters to enjoy the wild and unbelievable action scenes with cars and choppers explosively flying all over the film’s new setting in Moscow.

With its high-octane action series, “A Good Day to Die Hard” is best viewed on the big screen - Ayala Cinemas’ Trinoma theater recorded highest at P2.24 million that drove in 11,354 admissions over the movie’s opening weekend, followed by SM Mall of Asia at P1.98 million in receipts. Still within the top theaters that tapped into attracting the most of the movie’s audience are Glorietta4 (P1.66million); SM North Edsa (P1.63million); Greenbelt3 (P1.55million); Powerplant (1.42 million); Newport (P1.41million); SM Megamall (P1.32million); Alabang Town Center (P1.29million) and SM Cebu (P1.07million).

Upping the ante of “A Good Day To Die Hard” is the introduction of McClane’s estranged son Jack played by Jai Courtney.  Opening a much wider audience base is Courtney’s inclusion in the movie which also explains further influx of women apart from its core male audience in the following theaters that also made it to “A Good Day To Die Hard’s” top 20 cinemas on its opening weekend: Eastwood (P954, 123); Gateway Cineplex (P 846, 956); SM Clark (P 797, 838); Ayala Cebu (P762, 960); Robinson’s Ermita (P 757, 660); Theatremall (P 755, 162); Market!Market! (P 753, 536); Shang Cineplex (P 640, 699); SM Fairview (P632, 196) and Filinvest (P 615, 726).

Now showing across the Philippines, Bruce Willis reprises his iconic role as police detective John McClane in “A Good Day to Die Hard,” set against the backdrop of deadly corruption and political vendetta in Russia.  McClane arrives in Moscow to track down his estranged son, Jack, (Jai Courtney), and is stunned to discover he’s working undercover to protect a government whistleblower, Komarov.  With their own necks on the line, the McClanes are forced to overcome their differences in order to get Komarov to safety and thwart a potentially disastrous crime.

Eleanor Tomlinson, Not Your Average Princess in “Jack The Giant Slayer”

Eleanor Tomlinson, Not Your Average Princess in “Jack The Giant Slayer”

Young British actress Eleanor Tomlinson (“Alice in Wonderland”) plays Isabelle, the feisty princess yearning for adventure, in New Line Cinema's 3D action fantasy “Jack the Giant Slayer.

If it was adventure the princess craved, she certainly finds it the night she sneaks out of the castle and rides as far as Jack’s (Nicholas Hoult) hovel before seeking shelter from a growing storm. She arrives just in time to see one of the special beans Jack brought back from the marketplace sprout into a gargantuan vine. Its writhing tendrils drive the tiny dwelling straight up into the sky, and her along with it, prompting an urgent rescue mission.

She's not your average princess,” offers Eleanor Tomlinson, as the royal rebel. “She’s strong-willed and nonconformist. She doesn’t want the pomp and protocol and all that comes along with being the daughter of a king, and only experiencing life from behind stone walls, which is why she runs away from the palace every chance she gets. She’d rather be a normal girl.

Tomlinson and director Bryan Singer balanced Isabelle’s liberated aspirations and outward edge with a natural tenderness and compassion, making her all the more a fitting match for her yet-unspoken suitor. Tomlinson explains, “She loves her father and understands how he feels, having lost her mother years ago. That’s one of the things I liked about the script. With all this madness going on - the action and effects and the giants - it’s still about people and relationships, and there’s more than one emotional story at its core.

Eleanor brought all these qualities to the fore with consummate grace: the tomboy who lives to take chances and yet never forgets her dignity and true calling. She looked great disguised in squires’ clothes or utterly glamorous as a princess,” says Singer.

Jack and Isabelle are people who are meant to be together,” he concludes. “They’re two adventurous souls on the cusp of adulthood, who share a yearning to be free, and their paths are about to cross.”

Tomlinson previously appeared as Fiona Chattaway in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” starring an ensemble cast, and as Eve in the “Dr. Who” spin-off, “The Sarah Jane Adventures.” Leading roles in two thriller/horror movies followed, TV’s “The Village” and the feature “Styria.” She also appeared in the television movie “The Lost Future,” alongside Sean Bean and Sam Claflin.

She will soon be seen in the feature drama “Siberian Education,” alongside John Malkovich and Peter Stormare, and recently wrapped the BBC drama “The White Queen,” to air in the U.S. on Starz.

In 2009, Tomlinson had the great honor of becoming teenage ambassador for World Vision and made a life-changing trip to Jaipur, India, to help highlight the problems experienced by teenage girls being forced into the sex trade. She is also patron of the local charity Wheelchairs for Kids in her home town of East Yorkshire, England.

A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, “Jack the Giant Slayer” opens in the Philippines in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular theaters on February 28 and is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Warrant of Arrest Issued to ABS-CBN Chairman Gabby Lopez and TV5 News Chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes on Libel Case Filed by GMA-7

Warrant of Arrest Issued to ABS-CBN Chairman Gabby Lopez and TV5 News Chief Luchi Cruz-Valdes on Libel Case Filed by GMA-7

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court, on Monday, February 18, has issued a warrant of arrest against ABS-CBN Chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III, ABS-CBN news journalists Lynda Jumilla, Maria Progena Estonillo Reyes, Annie Eugenio, Dondi Garcia, Jose Ramon Olives, Jesus Maderazo,  and former ABS-CBN employees Erwin Tulfo, Beth Frondoso, Luis Alejandro, Jose Magsaysay Jr., Alfonso Marquez, and Luchi Cruz-Valdes who is now TV5's News Chief.

The warrant of arrest is in relation to the case filed by GMA-7 in 2004 against ABS-CBN and its employees for using its “exclusive coverage videos” of Iraqi abducted OFW Angelo dela Cruz's arrival in Manila which ABS-CBN claimed to be syndicated from international news agency Reuters.

Here is ABS-CBN's official statement regarding this case as released by the station's Head of ABS-CBN Integrated Corporate Communications, Bong R. Osorio:

The respondents to the libel case have voluntarily surrendered to the court and posted bail in accordance with law. They nevertheless firmly maintain that the libel charge has no basis in fact and law.
In truth, it was the complainant who used ABS-CBN footage without its authority and consent and was thus charged by ABS-CBN with copyright infringement.

It is unfortunate that the respondents are being pilloried as criminals, when in fact, it was ABS-CBN whose rights were violated. They are confident that this libel suit will eventually be dismissed."

The respondents will avail themselves of all legal remedies to question the findings of probable cause for the arrest warrants issued by the RTC of Quezon City."

DZMM Launches Bagito o Beterano? The DZMM Halalan 2013 Forum

DZMM launched its first Bagito o Beterano? The DZMM Halalan 2013 Forum last February 9 at the University of the East - Manila  where neophyte and veteran politicians running for the May elections faced off for the first time in a public forum.

The event brought together senatorial candidates, former senators Richard Gordon, Ernesto Maceda, Jun Magsaysay, Cong. Sonny Angara and Manila mayor Alfredo Lim representing the “beterano” panel, and senatorial candidates Grace Poe-Llamanzares, Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Bam Aquino, gubernatorial candidate in Masbate Fr. Leo Casas, and former reporter and congressional candidate Sol Aragones making up the “bagito” panel.

The electoral hopefuls expressed their views on different issues such as political dynasty, divorce, disaster preparedness, environmental and educational concerns, campaign strategy, as well as the programs they plan to carry out if they get elected. The public was also given a chance to voice out their opinions via text and social media poll where 88% said they would vote for the “bagitos” or the neophyte politicians if the elections were to be held the following day, while only 12% said they sided with the “beteranos” or veteran politicians.

The forum was moderated by Kabayan Noli De Castro, accompanied by Henry Omaga-Diaz and Jing Castaneda. Bagito o Beterano: The DZMM Halalan 2013 Forum is part of a series of debates and election specials produced by AM radio station DZMM to help voters get to know the candidates for different government posts.

One Direction "One Way or Another" Music Video and Lyrics

Here’s a video preview of One Direction newest single, a cover of Blondie's “One Way or Another.”

The song which they recorded for Red Nose Day 2013 (a biennial telethon, hosted by UK charity Comic Relief) is set to be officially released anytime today, February 18.

One way or another I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha
One way or another I’m gonna win ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha
One way or another I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meetcha meetcha meetcha meetcha
One day, maybe next week
I’m gonna meetcha, I’m gonna meetcha, I’ll meetcha
I will drive past your house
And if the lights are all down
I’ll see who’s around

One way or another I’m gonna find ya
I’m gonna getcha getcha getcha getcha
One way or another I’m gonna win ya
I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha
One way or another I’m gonna see ya
I’m gonna meetcha meetcha meetcha meetcha
One day, maybe next week
I’m gonna meetcha, I’ll meetcha

And if the lights are all out
I’ll follow your bus downtown
See who’s hanging out

One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip, a slip of the lip or another
I’m gonna lose ya, I’m gonna trick ya, I’ll trick ya
One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna trick ya trick ya trick ya trick ya
One way or another I’m gonna lose ya
I’m gonna give you the slip

I’ll walk down the mall
Stand over by the wall
Where I can see it all
Find out who ya call
Lead you to the supermarket checkout
Some specials and rat food, get lost in the crowd

One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha
(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)
One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha
(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)
One way or another I’m gonna getcha, I’ll getcha, I’ll getcha getcha getcha getcha
(Where I can see it all, find out who ya call)

Phillip Phillips "Gone, Gone, Gone" Music Video and Lyrics

Here is the music video for Phillip PhillipsGone, Gone, Gone” taken in different locations including Springfield, MO, Los Angeles, and Palm Springs, California.

“Gone, Gone, Gone” is a follow-up to his American Idol banner song “Home” off of his debut album "The World From the Side of the Moon" under 19 Recordings, Inc.

When life leaves you high and dry
I'll be at your door tonight
If you need help, if you need help
I'll shut down the city lights,
I'll lie, cheat, I'll beg and bribe
To make you well, to make you well

When enemies are at your door
I'll carry you away from war
If you need help, if you need help
Your hope dangling by a string
I'll share in your suffering
To make you well, to make you well

Give me reasons to believe
That you would do the same for me

And I would do it for you, for you
Baby, I'm not moving on
I love you long after you're gone.
For you, for you.
You would never sleep alone
I love you long after you're gone
And long after you're gone, gone, gone.

When you fall like a statue
I'm gon' be there to catch you
Put you on your feet, you on your feet
And if your well is empty
Not a thing will prevent me
Tell me what you need, what do you need

I surrender honestly
You've always done the same for me

So I would do it for you, for you.
Baby, I'm not moving on
I love you long after you're gone.
For you, for you.
You would never sleep alone.
I love you long after you're gone
And long after you're gone gone gone.

You're my back bone,
You're my cornerstone
You're my crutch when my legs stop moving
You're my head start,
You're my rugged heart
You're the pulse that I've always needed
Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum my heart never stops beating

For you, for you
Baby I'm not moving on
I love you long after you're gone.
For you, for you.
You would never sleep alone
I love you long after you're gone.
For you, for you.
Baby I'm not moving on,
I love you long after you're gone.
For you, for you.
You would never sleep alone.
I love you long, long after you're gone.

Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum, baby, don't stop beating
Like a drum my heart never stops beating for you

And long after you're gone, gone, gone.
I love you long after you're gone gone, gone.
