Highly-acclaimed "Ang Pinakabata" Documentary Re-airs Tonight on 'Front Row'

Highly-acclaimed "Ang Pinakabata" Documentary Re-airs Tonight on  'Front Row'

Tonight, Front Row re-airs its highly-acclaimed documentary, "Ang Pinakabata".

The documentary tells about "Camille,"  who was sexually abused by her father when she was only 8 years old and conceived her firstborn baby by the age of 9. She was a full-fledged mother by 10 years of age, one of the youngest mothers in the history of the Philippines.  She is now under the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development and has given up her son in the hopes that a foster family will give him the love and care he needs.

"Ang Pinakabata" has been chosen last year by the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival for a one-time special screening, making it the first television documentary to be given such honor.  Respected filmmaker Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo Jr., who acted as the programmer of the documentary section of this year's Cinemalaya, extolled the thought-provoking subject of the documentary.  "Ang Pinakabata" deals with a sensitive subject - a very young girl, not beyond puberty, who gets pregnant.  It will make any sensitive viewer angry; hopefully, it will also make viewers find rational solutions to a very explosive subject," del Mundo said.

"Ang Pinakabata" was also a Finalist in the 2012 UNICEF Asia-Pacific Child Rights Award .

Don't miss "Ang Pinakabata" on "Front Row" tonight at 8:45pm, on GMA News TV Channel 11.

Vhong Navarro Insecure with Billy Crawford?

Billy Crawford will guest on “Toda Max” this Saturday (February 2) where he will compete with Vhong Navarro in a series of showdowns to impress Angel Locsin.

When asked if they face this kind of tight competition in real life, Vhong answered, “There’s no competition between me and Billy. We treat each other almost like siblings especially on It’s Showtime where we are co-hosts. We don’t feel insecure or jealous of each other at all,” he said.

We have our own talents; for example, apart from dancing, he excels more in singing while I’m more experienced in comedy,” he added.

But will they be able to use these talents to impress Isabel (Angel) on “Toda Max”? Pao (Billy) will try to prove that he is more worthy of Isabel so he will challenge Justin (Vhong) to a basketball showdown. Just like in the teleserye “Princess and I”, spectators will be divided between ‘Team Pao’ and ‘Team Justin’. Who will win Princess Isabel’s hand in the end?

Find out in the “Princess and I” episode of “Toda Max” this Saturday (February 2) after “Maalaala Mo Kaya” on ABS-CBN.

Dionisia Pacquiao Talks About Encounter with Mama Mary in ‘Hiwaga”

Broadcast journalist Atom Araullo traces the story of Dionisia Pacquiao, mother of renowned Pinoy boxer Manny Pacquiao, and gets to know the mysteries behind her strong faith in Jesus and the Virgin Mary this Friday (February 1) in “Pinoy True Stories: Hiwaga.”

Though many know that Mommy D is a devotee, her faith is not something she has formed overnight because when Manny was a child, she claimed that she had seen an apparition of the Holy Mother. She was diagnosed with leukemia then but after this encounter, her illness suddenly disappeared.

But the story doesn’t end there because years later, she was afflicted with an inexplicable disease which made her sleepless and bloated. Would her faith give in to this test? Or would it make her stronger?

Don’t miss the full story in “Pinoy True Stories: Hiwaga,” anchored by Atom Araullo this Friday (February 1), 4:45 p.m. after “A Gentleman’s Dignity” on ABS-CBN. For updates on the program, visit www.abs-cbnnews.com/currentaffairs.

Watch the other “Pinoy True Stories” produced by ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, such as “Bistado” with Julius Babao every Monday, “Engkwentro” with Karen Davila every Tuesday, “Saklolo” with Maan Macapagal and Dominic Almelor every Wednesday, and “Demandahan” with Anthony Taberna every Thursday.

Man vs. Alligator, Surfer vs. Shark and More on Joey de Leon’s 'Hayop sa Galing' Premieres this Saturday

Seasoned TV host Joey de Leon is set to wow audiences once again in an entertaining and informative program about animals on Hayop sa Galing, which will premiere this Saturday, February 2, at 8:00PM.

The show features the best animal videos all over the world translated in Filipino. For its pilot episode, Hayop sa Galing will highlight spectacular survival stories - like that of a man who survived after being bitten by an alligator, and the surfer who was able to escape death after a shark attack. The show will also feature an elephant whose foot was trapped in a tire but was eventually rescued by his fellow pachyderms.

There are also cute and funny clips of a bear that fell while sleeping in a hammock and a sporty kangaroo who does boxing and Muay Thai.

Aside from out-of-this-world footage with computer-generated graphics to help explain animal behavior in a clear and visual manner, Hayop sa Galing will also showcase a trivia game for Joey's guests, culminating in a live dare. This week’s guests are TV5 young stars Ritz Azul and Martin Escudero. The two are tasked to outsmart each other in answering animal-oriented trivia questions to avoid the dare they wouldn’t want to accept.

Hayop sa Galing will air every Saturday at 8:00PM starting February 2 on TV5.

Ferocious Thriller Movie “Savages” Showing Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas on February 20

Ferocious Thriller Movie “Savages” Showing Exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas on February 20

Three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller “Savages,” featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benecio del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The film is based on Don Winslow's best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times' Top 10 Books of 2010.

“Savages” will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas starting February 20. Moviegoers can catch it at Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3, Trinoma, Alabang Town Center and Market! Market!

In the film, Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry - raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town...until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them.

When the merciless head of the BC, Elena (Hayek), and her brutal enforcer, Lado (Del Toro), underestimate the unbreakable bond among these three friends, Ben and Chon - with the reluctant, slippery assistance of a dirty DEA agent (Travolta) - wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.

From its provocative first chapter to its lyrical last page, Don Winslow's audacious 2010 novel "Savages" captivated and stunned audiences and critics alike. Winslow describes that the genesis of his bestselling book was an unusual one: "I was sitting at my desk one day in a bad mood and together. From the time the script sold to the time that shooting began, it was about three months, which is unheard of."

"Savages," laced with the politics and trade of marijuana, areas that have long been of interest to the writer/director, riveted Stone when he read it in galley form. Shane Salerno & Don Winslow & Oliver Stone adapted the novel into a screenplay, and in less than a year, Universal Pictures secured the worldwide distribution rights. Soon after, principal photography began. Of his interest in crafting a film out of the groundbreaking novel, Stone relays: "I thought the book was well done. It's about power, betrayal, money and questioning current values."

“Savages” features multiple themes that recur in Stone's movies: layered power struggles, shifting loyalties, examinations of the best and worst of human nature, explorations of complex family relationships and a compelling look at damaged people, some of whom find their own kind of heroism.

Stone reflects that this project called to mind “Any Given Sunday” and "the corporation coming into football." About the economy of scale, he says: "Above all, it is a power move by the Mexican Cartel into the United States to cut in on the independent distributors and producers. In the movie, the Baja Cartel is more interested in volume than the boutique-sized operations. But wherever you have volume versus independent growers, you're going to have a clash. Walmart doesn't want to have competitors."

Frequent Stone collaborator, producer Moritz Borman offers that there is a natural inclination to search for parallels in “Savages” with Stone's earlier films, but that the director isn't interested in retreads. Borman says: "Obviously, people will try to compare `Savages' to some of Oliver's other movies, but the style and message are different, and it's a different story. But it certainly has some of the intensity of his other pictures. He has always had something to say, and therefore has turned out these films that have survived."

His fellow producer, Eric Kopeloff, notes that the director is as interested in characters as he is in a geopolitical backdrop: "That's what excites him about making movies - finding a story where you can go on a ride with the characters. Oliver's someone who never stops trying, never stops doing different things to stretch the medium."

ABS-CBN Stages 8th Pinoy Media Congress; Launches “In the Service of Filipinos Worldwide: Speeches and Stories by Eugenio Lopez III” Book

Communication students from all over the nation will get a glimpse of the inner workings of media as the industry’s finest practitioners gather once again for this year’s “Pinoy Media Congress (PMC),” to be held today, January 31 at the ABS-CBN Studio 10 in Quezon City and on February 1 and 2 at the Trinity Theatre, Trinity University of Asia.

ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III and ABS-CBN President and CEO Charo Santos-Concio will lead the resource speakers in the two-day event, which will also feature the launch of Lopez’s book, “In the Service of Filipinos Worldwide: Speeches and Stories by Eugenio Lopez III.”

With the theme “Media: Beyond Information and Education,” this year’s PMC will hold sessions on TV broadcasting and production, lectures on media trends and issues, and a dialogue with the leaders of ABS-CBN, the country’s television pioneer and largest multimedia conglomerate.

All set to impart their knowledge and experiences on these topics are ABS-CBN head of Broadcast Cory Vidanes, head of News and Current Affairs Ging Reyes, head of Corporate Marketing Cookie Bartolome, head of Programming Operations and On-air Management Jillmer Dy, head of Creative Communications Management Robert Labayen, head of Corporate Communications Bong Osorio, head of Customer Business Development Vivian Tin, head of ABS-CBN Regional Network Group Jerry Bennett; experts Martin Hadlow, Jason Cruz, and Atty. Harry Roque; and veteran journalists Alvin Elchico, Jorge Cariño, Carmina Reyes, Lester Chavez, and Paul Henson.

Osorio said the PMC has grown to be a much-awaited event for communication and journalism students since its inception in 2005, drawing around 1,000 students from all over the country each year.

From the start, we at ABS-CBN could see the promise of the Pinoy Media Congress in enriching the next generation of mass communicators. So from a simple program featuring eye-opening talks and discussions, it now offers more interaction and engagement with a video-making contest, film showing, studio tour, and even performances by ABS-CBN artists,” Bong Osorio shared.

The Philippine Association of Communication Educators (PACE), which organizes the yearly event with ABS-CBN, expressed its gratitude for the continued support of the network to PMC.

We are very thankful for the commitment of ABS-CBN to this project. As the industry leader, ABS-CBN has all the tools to equip our students with technical know-how that would prepare them for their future careers. We look forward to more years of partnership,” said PACE President, Prof. Gwenetha Pusta.

This year, delegates will learn about the history of Philippine television in Bartolome’s presentation on the 60 years of the Kapamilya network. Following her is Dy, who will discuss the process of production.

Labayen, the mind behind the network’s famous Christmas Station IDs, will then tackle the process of creating advocacy plugs to connect with television viewers.

Osorio, on the other hand, will orient the students on crisis communication, while Tin will talk about the importance of understanding the audience.

To uncover the nitty-gritty of broadcasting practice, there will also be a session with “TV Patrol Weekend” anchor Elchico. Seasoned journalists Jorge Cariño, Carmina Reyes, Lester Chavez, Paul Henson, and Karen Davila, on the other hand, will reveal the the ten things to know about field reporting, current affairs, making a documentary, news scriptwriting, and anchoring, respectively.

For issues beyond television, the PMC will have Martin Hadlow, secretary-general of the Asian Media Information and Communication Center (AMICC), to discuss the changing landscape of media in the region. Meanwhile, MRM Worldwide Manila’s community manager Jason Cruz will talk about the trends and future of social media. MRM is the digital arm of McCann Worldgroup Manila.

Hot topics such as tourism and media-related legislation will also be tackled by Bennett with a case study on the Choose Philippines campaign, while renowned lawyer Atty. Roque will dissect the Anti-Cybercrime Law and the Freedom of Information Bill.

The Pinoy Media Congress has been awarded by prestigious award-giving bodies including the Philippine Quill Awards of the International Association of Business Communicators Philippines in 2007 and the Anvil Awards of the Public Relations Society of the Philippines in 2008.

GMA Network Seeks Review of COMELEC's Fair Election Act

GMA Network Seeks Review of COMELEC's Fair Election Act

GMA Network, Inc. (“GMA” or “the Network”) expressed serious concerns and reservations on certain provisions of Resolution No. 9615, (the Rules and Regulations Implementing Republic Act No. 9006 otherwise known as the ‘Fair Election Act’) (the “New Rules”), affecting the broadcast industry.

In a letter dated January 23, 2013, GMA, through its Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, Consultant to the Chairman and CEO Pacifico A. Agabin, Vice President for Legal Affairs Atty. Ma. Luz P. Delfin, and Belo Gozon Elma Parel Asuncion and Lucila Law Office urged the Honorable Commission to recall and revisit said provisions based on certain procedural and substantive concerns.

GMA raised its concern on the manner of passage of Resolution No. 9615 as COMELEC did not conduct any public hearing especially among those affected by the resolution. GMA noted that the Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines requires due notice to all interested parties as well as an opportunity for the same to be heard.

Considering that substantive rights of various parties shall be affected by the New Rules, GMA questioned the propriety of its promulgation without public participation.

Under Resolution No. 9615, it appears that a candidate is only allowed an aggregate total of 120 minutes of television advertising, whether appearing on national, regional or local, free or cable television (regardless of the source of content), and 180 minutes of radio advertising, whether airing on national, regional, or local radio, regardless of the number of stations or networks used.

This differs from the rules observed in the 2010 national elections in which a candidate for a national elective position was allowed to use and avail himself of 120 minutes of TV airtime and 180 minutes of radio airtime on a per station basis.

Due to said change, GMA requested the COMELEC to clarify whether the 120 minutes granted to a candidate for a national position and the 60 minutes for a local elective position for television already include all the available minutes which he or she can use to broadcast political ads on all TV networks and stations, including cable TV.

If the answer is in the affirmative, GMA said that broadcasting entities would certainly encounter major difficulties primarily “in monitoring the broadcasting minutes spent by numerous candidates for various elective positions” broadcast in other TV and radio networks, “and therefore compliance with the New Rules will be cruel and oppressive.” It should be noted that, under the New Rules, the officers of the Network would be held criminally liable for any violations of the candidates with respect to the allowed airtime limits.

The Network added that even if the candidates will be required to submit their written certification of their broadcasting minutes, the verification of the authenticity of the certifications would pose “burdensome, oppressive, and unreasonable” demands given that GMA does not have the required expertise to perform such, and would entail added and substantial costs to the Network.

While it may have the available means and competence to monitor all of the political advertisements aired on its TV and radio stations nationwide, GMA pointed out that it “does not have the required capability (or even the opportunity as those networks and entities may not allow access to their facilities) to undertake an accurate monitoring and attain a reasonable degree of certainty of a candidate’s (or all the candidates’) remaining quota of broadcasting minutes.

The Network also argued that given the dynamic nature of the broadcast industry, any breach of the allowed TV and radio minutes, which is penalized as a criminal offense, would become a controversial issue among broadcast networks and content providers for cable TV, and “spawn network cross-accusations that violations did not occur in their own fence, but in the others’.”

GMA added that the limited number of broadcast minutes brought about by the New Rules would “unduly pull or gravitate” candidates to a few large networks with high ratings to the detriment of the small ones. GMA further stated that this media pull may still result in an increased cost for broadcast services, rendering the “equal access to media time” rule in Sections 2 and 6 of Republic Act No. 9006 meaningless as it puts candidates with low campaign budgets at a disadvantage.

GMA thus urged that the same rule on the airtime allotment in the 2010 elections based on a per station basis be reinstated for purposes of the 2013 elections. Otherwise, GMA said that it “would find itself in a quandary or worse, be indicted for an election offense.”

In addition, GMA expressed its confusion over the provisions that required the prior approval of the COMELEC “for appearances or guestings by a candidate on any bona fide newscast, news interview or news documentary even as said guesting or appearance is deemed incidental and not considered as broadcast election propaganda,” as stated in the New Rules. GMA thus puts in question as to why it should be required to “afford other candidates equal opportunity to promote their candidacy especially if their appearance is not really pertinent to a news documentary or report being made.”

The Network further argued that this interference in the content of news reporting would not only require added manpower and logistical resources, but would likewise invite challenges on the right of free expression. In relation to this, GMA submitted that it should be given leeway to determine on its own which matters are considered newsworthy enough for broadcast considering that it has 50 years of experience and expertise in the broadcast industry.

Further, GMA said that while it understands that the COMELEC may issue rules and regulations, the Network maintains that the company and its officers should not be faulted and held criminally liable “for any breach of the time limits provided under the New Rules.” GMA referred to it as “a marked deviation” from the list of election offenses, which mostly include deliberate acts undertaken by candidates and their representatives.

“The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” Movie Poster

New Line Cinema has just revealed the main poster art of its upcoming magic-themed comedy “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” starring Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde and Jim Carrey.

In the film, superstar magicians Burt Wonderstone (Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Buscemi) have ruled the Las Vegas strip for years, raking in millions with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. But lately the duo’s greatest deception is their public friendship, while secretly they’ve grown to loathe each other.

Facing cutthroat competition from guerilla street magician Steve Gray (Carrey), whose cult following surges with each outrageous stunt, even their show looks stale. But there’s still a chance Burt and Anton can save the act - both onstage and off - if Burt can get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.

Opening across the Philippines on March 20, “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” is a New Line Cinema presentation and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Disney's “The Muppets...Again!” Kicks Off Production in London

The filmmaking team behind 2011’s celebrated film “The Muppets” reunites as Disney’s “The Muppets … Again!” kicked off production last week in London. The all-new global Muppets adventure welcomes Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey to the mayhem, along with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Walter and rest of the Muppets.

The film is directed by James Bobin (“Flight of the Conchords,” “Da Ali G Show”), who was just nominated for a BAFTA for “The Muppets” (Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer), and produced by the Academy Award®-nominated team of David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman (“The Fighter,” “The Proposal”).

With a screenplay by Bobin and Nicholas Stoller (“The Five-Year Engagement”), who is also executive producer with John Scotti, “The Muppets … Again!” will feature music from Academy Award®-winning songwriter Bret McKenzie who won an Oscar® for best original song for “The Muppets” (“Man or Muppet”). The new film will hit the big screen March 21, 2014.

It’s great to be back working with the Muppets,” said Bobin, “some of them even remember my name occasionally now. As for the movie, it’s a tip of the hat to the old-school crime capers of the ’60s, but featuring a frog, a pig, a bear and a dog - no panthers, even pink ones - along with the usual Muppet-y mix of mayhem, music and laughs.

Disney’s “The Muppets …Again!” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine - the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit - and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais, creator of “Derek” and the Golden Globe®- and Emmy®-winning series “The Office” and “Extras.”

The film stars Golden Globe-, Emmy- and SAG Award®-winning actress and writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” “Mean Girls,” “Date Night”) as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell (TV’s “Modern Family”) as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

Said Kermit the Frog, “This movie takes us places we’ve never been before. And trust me - this frog has never seen so much international flavor. I think audiences will eat it up - the entertainment, that is.

Featuring a slew of surprising celebrity cameos, Disney’s “The Muppets … Again!” will shoot on location in London and in Hollywood, as well as in the famed Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, just outside of London.
