The Battle for L.A. Explodes in “Gangster Squad”

The Battle for L.A. Explodes in “Gangster Squad”

No names. No badges. No mercy.

Warner Bros.' new action-thriller “Gangster Squad” is an action-packed story of redemption, of righting wrongs, of men taking back what’s theirs, and the belief and commitment required to make a difference, to save the city they love, the City of Angels.

In order to preserve the law in Los Angeles, the members of the gangster squad - a small group of LAPD cops secretly tasked to take on the city’s most nefarious crime lord, Mickey Cohen - would have to break it. “Gangster Squad,” inspired by these true events, depicts the height of Hollywood’s glamorous Golden Age in 1949, and also a time of great turmoil in L.A. Cohen ran the town and had local government officials at the highest levels in his pocket. It would take a lot of guts - there could be no glory in it - to put an end to his reign.

Ruben Fleischer, the film’s director/executive producer, a former history major, couldn’t wait to delve into that world. “It was such an exciting time: that elegant, art deco, post-war era when the city was really being reborn and expanding,” he observes. “There was exuberance about the victory overseas, the men coming home, and the economy coming back. I’ve always been fascinated by that period, so when the opportunity to explore it came along, I jumped at it.”

Producer Dan Lin says, “Ruben wanted to put a new twist on the genre by taking his contemporary filmmaking aesthetic and applying it to the period setting, providing a modern edge to a story that takes place back in the days when the good guys had to act like mobsters to take down a mobster.

And they did, essentially engaging in a turf war with the bad guys, though the cops’ modus operandi in going for Cohen’s inner workings wasn’t exactly by the books.

There was a real shift in the culture at that time, and something had to be done,” Lin says. “Gangsters had taken over New York and Chicago, and L.A. had become their next target. It was virgin territory and every mobster’s dream: blue skies, sunny beaches, and beautiful girls.”

The movie is based on former Los Angeles Times writer/editor Paul Lieberman’s book, Gangster Squad, his non-fiction account of what he calls “the battle for Los Angeles” that took place between the police and Cohen’s crew from the mid-1940s all through the `50s. Will Beall, a former LAPD homicide detective, penned the script.

What struck me about these guys is that they risked everything, and not for recognition, not for medals, not for monetary gain, but for the future of the city,” Beall offers. “They believed in the promise of L.A.

These characters and the amazing actors who signed on to play them, this story, the fact that it’s all based on the city’s history and, to top it off, that it’s my favorite film genre,” Fleischer smiles, “it all just got me really excited to make this movie.”

Opening across the Philippines on January 30, 2013, “Gangster Squad” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

ABS-CBN Teams up with University of the Philippines for Halalan 2013

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs has partnered with the University of the Philippines system for the country’s first and biggest fact-checking project that will verify candidates’ claims on ABS-CBN’s Halalan 2013 election forums and coverage, marking the first time a Philippine media organization will use the feature, which is standard in foreign news coverage and election debates.

Faculty and experts from UP will appear in fact-checking segments to air on ABS-CBN’s TV and online platforms, a part of the collaboration between the network and the university to promote transparency and public participation among voters.

To formalize the partnership, ABS- CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III, ABS-CBN president and COO Charo Santos-Concio, and ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Ging Reyes, signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with UP president Alfredo Pascual and UP vice president for Public Affairs, Prospero de Vera III last Dec. 5.

Pascual called the partnership a new milestone for UP as it is the first time that the university system has officially partnered with a media organization to provide the media component for the elections.

Santos-Concio said, “We believe UP’s role in nurturing future leaders will be a boon to Halalan 2013’s Tayo Na. With the UP system as our partner, ABS-CBN is ever confident and optimistic that the coming elections will again show our citizen journalists at their finest.”

Aside from fact-checking, the MOA will also create projects related to ABS- CBN’s election campaign Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na and voter informa- tion drives, including a microsite where overseas Filipino voters can get informa- tion on the 2013 elections.

Derrick Monasterio and Jake Vargas Play as Mr. Pogi Winners Jaylord Casino and John Edric Ulang in "Magpakailanman"

Derrick Monasterio and Jake Vargas Play as Mr. Pogi Winners Jaylord Casino and John Edric Ulang in "Magpakailanman"

This Saturday, GMA's reality-based drama anthology program hosted by Ms. Mel Tiangco, "Magpakailanman," will feature the lives of Jaylord Casino and John Edric Ulang, winners of Eat Bulaga's "Mr. Pogi" contest.

Just like most aspirants who want to enter show business, Jaylord and John Edric have always dreamed of becoming popular stars one day and they saw showbiz as a way out of poverty.

Although they both reached the same juncture in their journey, they came from very different worlds.

Jaylord was never an achiever in school.  Despite the efforts exerted by his parents to give him a good education, he just couldn't meet their expectations.  He grew up feeling the burden of being his parents' biggest disappointment but he figured that there must be something special about him that could make his parents proud. One day, a friend approached him and encouraged him to audition for "Mr. Pogi," a competition for male wanna-be TV stars hosted by the longest running noontime show, "Eat Bulaga."

Jaylord was confident that he has got the looks, charm and talent to win the title.  However, his parents are not as optimistic. Besides, this is not how they have envisioned their son to succeed in life.

Meanwhile, family is not a problem for another Mr. Pogi winner John Edric. From the very beginning he has always shown the makings of a star and his parents, especially his dad, have always been supportive of his plans. Unfortunately, John Edric's ambition of entering show business came to a halt when he unexpectedly impregnated his girlfriend, Michelle.

Consequently, John Edric's focus shifted from pursuing his dream career to providing for his own family.  He thought he would never catch up on his dream until the opportunity to audition for "Mr. Pogi" came one day.  He grabbed the chance and the rest is history, so to speak.

Join veteran journalist Ms. Mel Tiangco as she unravels these two inspiring stories of triumph with Kapuso teen star Derrick Monasterio and Jake Vargas portraying as Jaylord and John Edric this Saturday in "Magpakailanman," airing after Kap's Amazing Stories on GMA-7.

Solenn Heussaff, Bianca King and Rhian Ramos Talk About Their “Sosy Problems”

Solenn Heussaff, Bianca King and Rhian Ramos Talk About Their “Sosy Problems”

Solenn Heussaff, Bianca King and Rhian Ramos - the lead stars of GMA Films Metro Manila Film Festival 2012 movie entry "Sosy Problems" faced several entertainment bloggers for a pocket interview held on December 18 at GMA Building in QC.

The three sosy ladies talked about their roles in the movie and how it connect to their personal lives, their newfound friendship while shooting the film and their box-office expectations of the movie.

Q: What are your characters in the movie?

Solenn Heussaff: “Ako dito si Margaux, I am half-Filipina and half-French.  Wala na akong dad and my mom is married to a French ambassador.  Super super yaman kami.  Actually, wala naman akong masyadong problema except that lagi lang akong in competition with my bestfriend, Claudia (Heart Evangelista).  Bukod sa amin, yung mga mommies din namin are competiting with each other.”

Rhian Ramos: “My character’s name is Lizzie, and she’s the richest in the group.  She’s very flashy; she’s never subtle.  She likes to flash her money around.  She’s also bossy.  Her problem is actually more of an internal problem.  Her friends and family just give up on her because she’s really a brat and she’s very annoying.  She finds herself by finally living a life of simplicity.  The funny part in it is that when you take someone who doesn’t know how to do what common people do and you put them in a situation where they have no choice, like Solenn in Survivor (laughs).”

Bianca King: “My character’s name is Danielle.  Yung pamilya ko dito ay naghihirap na kasi my dad who is a former politician hinuli na ng pulis dahil sa mga kasalanan niya.  Kahit naghihirap na yung family ko I still try to keep up with my “sosy” friends.   Aside from the whole family issue, my character is also the one who is looking for love but for the wrong reasons: I’m looking for somebody rich to fall in love with me to solve my family’s financial problems.  Mabait pa rin naman si Danielle kasi ang iniisip pa rin niya ay yung family niya.  But in the end, she realizes that love is not like that pala.”

Q: How similar or different is “Sosy Problems” from the real world of the socialites?

SH: “The film is really a parody and an exaggeration of the real world of the socialites.  For sure may mga tao na ganun talaga but maybe they’re just like 10 or 20 percent of the total socialite population.  Wala naman sigurong tao na ganun talaga ka arte.  We can’t even name a real person we know as a peg for our characters.

BK: “Sa case naman ng character ko, possible siyang mangyari in real life.  Kasi ako dito anak ng politician na corrupt at makukulong dahil sa ill-gotten wealth, and things like these happen in real life.”

RR: “Pero the execution of it is really meant to be funny, it’s really meant to be a little outrageous than in real life.  You know, we made the movie to make people laugh.  It’s not naman like a documentary on sosy people.
I’m happy with the way the movie turned out.  Kasi feeling ko ang dami na kasing lumalabas na films pero puro pampaiyak.  I mean, bakit lagi nalang tayong nagpapaiyak.  Puwede naman tayong matawa na lang and have fun with people of all ages, everyone can get in.
Maiba naman.  Wala na yung mga ‘internal battles’ so to speak.  This movie is meant to make people happy.

Q: You said the story of the movie is an “exaggeration” of the real sosy world, does this mean that the production budget for this movie is also “exaggeratedly high” (laughs)?  Anong pinaka-sosy in terms of production cost na dapat abangan ng mga moviegoers dito?

RR: My helicopter is my favorite accessory.  It makes me look good (laughs).  I can skip traffic all the time.  Let’s just say that the amount invested in this film is the kind of amount that one would invest in a film with special effects, except that we didn’t have special effects.

SH: Siguro, for me, ang pinakamahal was the helmet I wore in a scene where I arrived riding a Ducati (laughs).  Imagine yung character ko na medyo tatanga-tanga pero at least naka-Ducati (laughs).

BK: Ako, nothing.  My character has nothing much except for my addition to Evian water (laughs).  Kasi diba wala na siyang pera kasi the banks sequestered all her family’s properties.  But even if wala na kaming pera, I still would brush my teeth and gargle ONLY with Evian Water.  There was a scene where I am seen opening a fridge full of Evian Water - that’s my treasure!

Q: How do you think your movie will fare in the Metro Manila Film Festival?

RR: I don’t really see the film fest as a competition.  I agreed to make this movie because I wanted to make people have the option to not cry and enjoy their holiday.  I want the people to have to option to see something that is light comedy and at the same time worth the while.

BK: We are not really pressured because we’re confident naman that people will like our film.

RR: I cannot imagine the scenes going better than how they were done.  I mean, from the script to the actual shoot, everything was really done with care and creativity.  Everyone did their best to make the movie funnier, more creative, more out-of-the-box than we thought it could be.

Q: How was it working together?

RR: I’m so excited, happy and thankful for this newfound friendship that I have with these girls (Solenn, Heart and Bianca) to the point where my family and “lovelife” is making tampo because I am always with them.

BK: Actually we’re together almost every day, kahit walang work we always find something to do together.  Kaya naman work didn’t feel like work on the set.

SH: Yeah.  Kahit minsan ‘pag sinabi nilang ang call time is 5:00am, excited pa rin kami, sige na game! Ganun.

BK: Kapag may downtime kami sa taping, all four of us are in somebody’s bed and we spend the whole time talking, eating and gossiping (laughs).

Q: Do you think you can sustain your newfound friendship after this movie?

SH: For sure.  Even if we’re going to be busy with our individual projects, I think we will still going to find time to see and hangout with one another.

RR: Well, we’re working on it right now (laughs).  We’re sustaining it.

BK: We’re trying to come up with something to do together like run together or exercise together.  Pero work-wise, we really hope that we can work together again.

Q: What is it that you like the most about this movie?

RR: This movie is packed with moral lessons and it shows in the end what really matters, what’s really important – and it’s not only the material things.

BK: The heart of the story of this movie is really about people and relationships.  That regardless of the capriciousness of the material things we enjoy in life, in the end, what really matters most is what bonds us together as people – and this transcends age, sex or socio-economic class.

Q: How do you asses your 2012?

SH:  The year was good.  I received a lot of blessings and I also worked hard.  I am very happy, I am very thankful for all the blessings, for the support of my family and friends and excited for the coming year.

RR: It has been a big, crazy and rollercoaster ride this year for me and I started it off in a very different way from how it’s ending.  I feel the same as when I first entered showbiz, when I was fifteen and I did my first movie, saw my first billboard. The same things are happening to me again; I’m getting the same feeling.  I’m excited, I can’t leave when I’m at work kasi I wanna see what’s happening on the set.  When I see myself in something, it’s as if my heart skips a beat and I go, “I think I’m back.” I’m just really excited and I will not take anything for granted, never!

BK: For me, I think 2012 is by far my most fulfilling year.  Kasi I have this checklist of my life, I set goals like what I want, what I want to do and how I’m going to get them, this year I checked almost all of them already:  I graduated from college this year, I have two really good shows – one in the afternoon, the other one in primetime, I played really nice roles, and then this movie.  Parang I feel like this is the year that closed one chapter of my life and now I’m about to open a new one, 2013, which has bigger goals and more exciting things, and that makes me so excited.

Heart Evangelista, who wasn't able to attend the presscon because she was dubbing her lines in the film, is also one of the lead stars of "Sosy Problems".

Vin Abrenica and Sophie Share Memorable Time with Pinoys in Dubai

Fresh from their win as Artista Academy Best Actress and Best Actor, Sophie Albert and Vin Abrenica flew to Dubai to entertain Filipino fans last December 1 during the annual “Bayanihan Festival” held at the famed Zabeel Park, one of the largest and most modern outdoor parks in Dubai. TV5 International and its partner Orbit Showtime Network (OSN) were among this year’s sponsors of the annual Filipino get-together.

The young couple - now known as SoVin to their fans - were thrilled to be part of this exciting event. It was their first international trip together since their big win. “Sobrang excited po talaga [kasi] makikita na namin yung mga Kapatid natin sa Dubai,” Sophie revealed. “Tapos siyempre first time po namin magkakasama ni Vin [na magtravel] together.”

Sophie and Vin weren’t the only artists present during the event. Dingdong Avanzado, Jessa Zaragoza, and Jon Santos were also there to entertain our kababayans. The Kapatid stars and their guests braved the rare Dubai rain to entertain the Pinoys at the event. Dingdong serenaded the audience with an a capella version of his hit song, “Basta’t Kasama Kita,” while wife Jessa sang her ever-famous “Bakit Pa”. Veteran comedian Jon Santos provided the laughs with his hilarious stand-up comedy routine.

That same evening, another show was held at the Boracay Club of Asiana Hotel where all the artists graced the event much to the delight of the packed venue. Vin performed “Hinahanap Hanap Kita” with the hotel band and Sophie got everyone dancing with her rousing performance of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” The Artista Academy couple shared the stage as they joined the crowd in dancing “Oppa Gangnam Style”.

During their downtime, Vin and Sophie had the chance to go around Dubai and visit iconic landmarks like the Burj Al Arab and the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. It was indeed a memorable trip not only for Sophie and Vin but also for the Filipinos who shared their time with them.

TV5’s international channels Kapatid TV5 and Aksyon TV International are available in the Middle East and Europe via OSN.

Karen Reyes to Replace Miles Ocampo on ‘Luv U’

Karen Reyes’ frequent team-up with Marco Gumabao in the teen comedy series “LUV U” has sparked rumors that she will now replace Marco’s original on-screen partner, Miles Ocampo.

Miles didn’t seem to be affected by the rumors though when she said that viewers should just watch out for the coming episodes. “In the series, my relationship with Marco is on-the-rocks. Find out on LUV U if we’re getting back together or not,” she said.

When asked if she feels worried about the idea of being paired up with others, she confessed that she does worry a bit. “We’re really close and I already feel very comfortable working with him,” she said.

On “LUV U” this Sunday (December 23), JB (Marco) will arrive with Ayen (Karen) at the Noche Buena where Camille (Miles), April (Angeli Gonzales) and Whitney (Kiray Celis) prepared food for the love of their lives. Does Ayen’s arrival mean that it’s going to be a loveless Christmas for Camille?

Find out on “LUV U” this Sunday (December 23) after “ASAP 2012” on ABS-CBN.

Ella Cruz Reveals Biggest Gift She Received this Year

Kapamilya tween mermaid Ella Cruz reveals that her top-rating fantaserye “Aryana” is the biggest gift that she has received this year.

I will never forget how ‘Aryana’ changed my life. It is the highlight of my 2012,” said Ella. “I’m very thankful to ABS-CBN for everything that happened to my life and my career this year.”

Because of her busy schedule, Ella shared that instead of buying expensive gadgets as her special reward for herself, she would rather have the simple joy of spending time with her family this Christmas. “All I want this Christmas is time to bond with my family. It may be simple, but it would really make me very happy.”

Meanwhile, unlike Ella’s good life and career this year, tension continues to arise in the magical ‘tail’ of her character Aryana now that people have discovered the existence of mermaids. How will Ofelia (Pokwang) and her family still be able to keep Aryana’s secret now that the authorities are searching for them? What will Reyna Hiyasmin (Tetchie Agbayani) and Neptuna (Desiree del Valle) do to help Aryana?

Don’t miss “Aryana,” weeknights, on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida, before “TV Patrol.” For more updates, log on to www.abs-cbn.com or follow @abscbndotcom on Twitter.

Stepping Up the Grandparents' Game in “Parental Guidance”

Stepping Up the Grandparents' Game in “Parental Guidance”

Comedy icons Billy Crystal and Bette Midler star in the family-centric comedy “Parental Guidance” together with Marisa Tomei, Tom Everett Scott, Bailee Madison, Joshua Rush and Kylie Harrison Breitkopf directed by Andy Fickman.

A comedic and emotionally rich depiction of the clashing parenting styles between the generations, “Parental Guidance’s” subject matter, characters and actors are relatable to all audiences.  Youngsters will enjoy the hijinks of the family’s trio of children; the film’s theme of being caught between your parents and kids will resonate with adults; and the movie is the first comedy in many years that shows grandparents as active, funny, involved and vital characters – and central to modern family life.

Alice (Tomei) in desperation calls her parents Artie (Crystal) and Diane (Midler) to look after their three children when she and her husband need to go on a trip.   In the story, Billy Crystal’s Artie and Bette Midler’s Diane are “the other grandparents” to their three grandchildren – meaning their son-in-law’s parents have a much stronger connection with the kids, which Diane envies and has long sought to correct.  But Artie and Diane’s infrequent visits to their daughter Alice’s (Marisa Tomei) home have relegated them to second-tier status – along with a few photos of the couple hidden on Alice’s mantelpiece.

Joe Syracuse & Lisa Addario, the movie’s screenwriting partners, husband-and-wife, and parents of two children, say the notion of battling parenting styles between the generations resonated with them. “Once we became parents, we realized that we were not raising them the way our parents raised us,” says Addario.  The two writers, like so many of their generation, grew up during a time when children’s car seats had yet to be invented, second-hand smoke didn’t have a name, and kids rode bikes without helmets.  But when our generation had kids, “the word ‘parent’ became a verb as well as a noun,” adds Syracuse.  “But when the reality of childrearing set in, we came to see the wisdom in the way our parents did things, and we started to question our generation’s nurturing, coddling and overprotecting our kids.”

Director Andy Fickman, father to a teenager, says he was drawn to the movie’s universal appeal, noting that “in any country in the world, each generation thinks it has a better way to be a parent.” Like Syracuse & Addario, Fickman makes special note of the differing generational parenting methods.  “When I was growing up, I would get a Pop Tart for breakfast.  My parents had [famed pediatrician] Dr. [Benjamin] Spock’s book to guide them through almost all situations; today, we go to doctors for every conceivable concern.  For parents today, it’s all about the kids’ feelings and emotions, and everything becomes a ‘Dr. Phil’ episode.”

Says Bette Midler of the generational parenting conflicts: “Most people are mortified by the way they were raised and can’t wait to raise their own kids differently.  I was on the cusp of the old school/new school parenting styles, so I understand the motivations of each.”

A big motivation for Midler to join “Parental Guidance” was the chance to team with Billy Crystal.  The two have been friends for nearly 30 years, but this is their first professional collaboration.  “Billy and I have similar tastes in theater, movies, music and humor, so it was pretty easy for us to play a married couple,” says the actress.  “We know what each other is going to do, so we mesh in a unique way.”

It’s a family affair when “Parental Guidance” opens in cinemas nationwide in the Phils. on January 16 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Dingdong Dantes Admits Accepting "One More Try" Because of Angel Locsin

Dingdong Dantes Admits Accepting "One More Try" Because of Angel Locsin

Award-winning actor and “One More Try” lead star Dingdong Dantes did not expect but was truly delighted when he received a second movie offer from Star Cinema, especially that it is another entry to the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Fresh from ‘Segunda Mano’ sinabihan na agad ako na I’m gonna do another project with Star Cinema. Hindi ko naman ini-expect it’s for MMFF again kaya parang nostalgic ‘yung experience,” narrated Dingdong. “Star Cinema gave me a very good experience sa first project ko with them kaya nung nalaman ko na may isa pa, syempre natuwa ako and I was looking forward sa new memories na mabi-build ko doing ‘One More Try’ na true enough naman ay isa namang pelikulang talagang hinding-hindi ko malilimutan.”

Under the direction of award-winning director Ruel S. Bayani, “One More Try” features a modern family drama about a mother’s immeasurable love to her son who is dying. In the story, Dingdong will play the character of Edward, a dedicated husband to Jacq (Angelica Panganiban), whose courage and character will be tested when her old friend Grace (Angel Locsin) re-enters his life with their son who is desperately in need of his father’s help.

According to Dingdong, aside from the unique beauty of the plot of “One More Try,” he immediately accepted offer because of the top caliber actors who are part of it, including former Kapuso star Angel.

First time ko nakasama si Angel. Kasi kahit na noong nasa GMA pa siya, hindi kami nagkaron ng pagkakataon na magkatrabaho. And although si Angelica nakasama ko na sa ‘Segunda Mano’ at si Zanjoe (Marudo) sa ‘Kimmy Dora,’ first time namin magsama-samang apat sa iisang pelikula,” said Dingdong who revealed that he learned so much while doing the film. “Everyday I learn so many things from different people–kung papano sila sa set, kung gaano ka sila kaprofessional towards their work, how much they love their work, and how to make an awesome product while you’re having fun.”

Dingdong is also proud of the extraordinary and courageous plot of “One More Try.” He said, “Kung gaano siya kabilis mag-evolve as a story, ganoon din siguro kabilis ang magiging impact niya sa audience. Dahil sa pagkakaron ng isang bata eventually it turned out to be more of a family drama film than an adult type of movie na alam naman natin na karamihan nang pinalabas this year ay may ganoong tema.”

Aside from the first team-up of Angel, Angelica, Zanjoe and Dingdong, also featured in “One More Try” are Carmina Villaroel, Agot Isidro, Edward Mendez, and Ms. Gina Pareño.

Experience love that makes you do the impossible and accept the unacceptable, don’t miss “One More Try,” which will be shown on cinemas nationwide starting December 25.

GMA-7 Afternoon Prime Teleseryes Top NUTAM Ratings for 2012

GMA Network’s Afternoon Prime block continues to dominate television ratings with the success of its drama programs. And consistent with the block’s trailblazing efforts, GMA Afternoon Prime continues to be the “Cradle of GMA Stars” where most of the network’s homegrown talents are molded and honed into becoming Philippine drama’s next big stars.

GMA Afternoon Prime remains unbeatable and has undoubtedly charmed Filipino viewers after its strong performance in TV ratings since 2007 not only in viewer rich Urban Luzon but also in Mega Manila, according to data from the industry’s widely trusted ratings service provider Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

After conquering Mega Manila and Urban Luzon, in 2011, GMA Afternoon Prime ruled NUTAM with 39.6 percent household audience share compared to ABS-CBN’s 26.6 percent and TV5’s 15.7 percent.

And 2012 marks an exceptionally successful year for GMA Afternoon Prime with its programs - Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin, The Good Daughter, Broken Vow, Hiram na Puso, Kasalanan Bang Ibigin Ka, Faithfully, Hindi Ka Na Mag-iisa, Yesterday’s Bride, Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga, and Magdalena – becoming the most watched afternoon drama programs nationwide.

Based on NUTAM TV Households Data from January to partial December 2012 (available data up to Dec 7, Dec 2-7 based on overnight readings), GMA’s Afternoon Prime block posted a dominating 42.2 percent household audience share as against ABS-CBN’s 25.3 percent and TV5’s 14 percent .

For the same period in Urban Luzon, GMA’s Afternoon Prime block scored 46.2 percent against ABS-CBN’s 21.4 percent and TV5’s 13 percent. Meanwhile, in Mega Manila, GMA Afternoon Prime block posted 46.8 percent compared to ABS-CBN’s 19.9 and TV5’s 13.7 percent.

Yesterday’s Bride, topbilled by Lovi Poe with Rocco Nacino and Luis Alandy, clearly edged out competition and gained ratings stronghold in its timeslot since it launched on October 29.

Based on nationwide household ratings data for the period October 29 to December 7 (Dec 2-7 data based on overnight ratings), the program registered 15.3 percent versus ABS-CBN’s Angelito: Ang Bagong Yugto with 8.7 percent and TV5’s Sine 5 and White Lie with 8.5 percent and 4.1 percent, respectively.

Sana ay Ikaw Na Nga, a remake of one of the network’s most remarkable series in 2001, which is now topbilled by promising Kapuso stars Mikael Daez, Andrea Torres, and Gabby Eigenmann revolves around the unrelenting love story of Carlos Miguel Altamonte (Mikael) and Cecilia Fulgencio (Andrea).

Based on NUTAM data for the period September 3 to December 7 (Dec 2-7 data based on overnight ratings), Sana ay Ikaw na Nga scored 15.8 percent versus ABS-CBN’s Kung Ako’y Iiwan Mo with 10.1 percent and Precious Hearts Romance: Paraiso with 9.6 percent. TV5’s Love You a Thousand Times and Pink Lipstick, on the other hand, registered 4.3 percent and 4.9 percent, respectively.

Magdalena, headlined by Bela Padilla together with Pauleen Luna, Dion Ignacio, Pancho Magno and Ryan Eigenmann, offers a compelling drama about family, love and trust. The program’s intriguing and bold storyline keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

For the period October 8 to December 7 (Dec 2-7 data based on overnight ratings), Magdalena posted a 13.7 percent nationwide compared to ABS-CBN’s Secret Love (9.3 percent), Precious Hearts Romance: Paraiso (9.6 percent) and A Gentleman’s Dignity (8.8 percent). TV5’s Pink Lipstick and Sharon, Kasama Mo Kapatid registered 4.8 percent and 2.7 percent, respectively.

Undoubtedly, this is GMA Afternoon Prime at its finest. Don’t miss the tears and thrills from GMA’s top-rating Afternoon Prime programs - airing weekdays from 2:30pm to 5pm - on GMA 7.
