Celebrate James Bond 50th Anniversary Today

Today, October 5th, 2012 is Global James Bond Day, marking the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise.  It was Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman who adapted Ian Fleming’s books and brought Dr No to the screen in 1962.  The 007 franchise today is the longest running in film history with twenty-three films produced.  The latest James Bond adventure is entitled SKYFALL™ and will be released in the UK on October 26th, in the Philippines on October 31st, and in the US on November 9th.

In the US, events for Global James Bond Day include a film retrospective at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and a Music of Bond Night hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles.  In other countries around the world, special events have been planned.  In the UK, an auction of James Bond memorabilia is taking place at Christie’s with all proceeds going to UNICEF and a number of charitable causes. In Belgium and South Africa, offices will celebrate with Bond-themed Casual Fridays where people will turn up to work dressed in gowns and tuxedos. In addition, EVERYTHING OR NOTHING: The Untold Story of 007, the feature documentary, will be screened in Australia, Belgium, France, Holland, India, Japan, Latvia, Mexico, and Russia. Radio stations around the world are planning to play Bond theme songs.

In addition, pre-sale tickets for Skyfall will be available in most locations, including the Philippines, on Friday, October 5.  Moviegoers may check with their local theaters for details.

The Philippines joins the world in greeting James Bond on his 50th birthday with a special LED projection on the iconic steel-framed globe at the SM Mall of Asia, one of the largest malls in Asia.

Philippines' Entry to 2013 Oscars "Bwakaw" Wows International Film Critiques

Philippines' Entry to 2013 Oscars "Bwakaw" Wows International Film Critiques

Jun Lana's "Bwakaw" has made international headlines following the Film Academy of the Philippines' announcement that the film about an elderly gay man in his twilight years has been selected as the country's entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2013 Academy Awards.

In the online site of world-leading news magazine TIME, "Bwakaw" was listed alongside the films of Ang Lee, Robert Zemeckis and Brian de Palma in Time's c at the New York Film Festival 2012 -  the only Asian film to make the prestigious list.

Various international news outfits including the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Washington Post, CBS News, The Republic, San Francisco Chronicle, Canada's Brandon Sun and Singapore's Straits Times have taken notice of the official selection of the Philippines to the Oscars, especially since its country of origin remains to be Asia's only Christian nation where homosexuality does not fit in the norm.

Other well-know film reviewers such as Variety.com. Slant Magazine, AwardsCircuit.com and gay-themed news sites Gay Star News and Queerty were quick to commend the merits of the movie. Earlier on Sunday, The Hollywood Reporter posted a favorable review of "Bwakaw" which it called "a captivating charmer from the Philippines."

An official selection at the 8th Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival's Directors' Showcase category where it clinched three recognitions (Audience Choice Award, NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Awards and Eddie Garcia as Best Actor), "Bwakaw" has also taken international theatrical screening at Toronto International Film Festival. Its presence in festival circuits continues as the Eddie Garcia-starrer heads to Hawaii and New York for the New York Film Festival this October.

In his interview with the WSJ, director Jun Lana shared that the movie tries to address "everyone's fear about growing old and missed chances." In the same interview, Lana revealed that the movie was inspired by his real-life teacher and mentor Rene Villanueva, a playwright who died in 2007 and who also came out of the closet late in life. "He was a colorful character, harsh and generous at the same time," he said. "My greatest fear was forgetting him, and I wanted to do a project to honor him."

The movie chronicles the story of Rene (Eddie Garcia), an elderly gay man who comes out late in life; leading a solitary life with his dog "Bwakaw."

After the New York Film Festival, it is scheduled to be screened at the Hawaii International Film Festival and at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

Richard Yap is Now a Certified Kapamilya; Signs 2-Year Exclusive Contract with ABS-CBN

Be Careful With My Heart” star Richard Yap is now a certified kapamilya as he recently signed a two-year exclusive contract with ABS-CBN. Richard is best known now to TV viewers as Sir Chief, the strict but caring boss of Yaya Maya, played by Jodi Sta. Maria.

In the said contract signing, the 45-year-old actor shared his reaction to comments describing him as the newest and hottest heartthrobs today, like Kapamilya teen sensation Daniel Padilla. “I won’t call myself a heartthrob,” said Richard. “I don’t even consider myself as an extra-ordinary handsome guy. Because the standards of being handsome before was mestizo and Chinese-looking men were never in demand.”

But with or without a ttitle, Richard remains thankful for the undying support of his fans who made their kilig-serye the no.1 daytime TV program in the country. “I’m so grateful for all their love,” he expressed. “It really feels great everytime I see them in mall shows and other special events.. It’s their way of showing their appreciation and I appreciate them so much for that.

When asked about his off-screen relationship with Jodi, Richard shared that it easy to get along with her leading lady. “It’s just so nice working with Jodi because she’s so down-to-earth,” he narrated. “From the beginning, it was not hard for us to jive because we have things in common – we both went to pre-med school, we both like doing videoke, and we kid around a lot in the set.”

Now that Rafi (Maricar Reyes) is around, will Maya and Sir Chief’s love story continue to flourish or will the ‘magic’ suddenly disappear?

According to them, they joined the Race with hopes to rekindle their friendship after a past rift.

Another Race contender is an actress who opted to lie low after marrying a popular cager. She’s reader to join the competition with her best friend who happens to be another familiar showbiz face. She’s seen in several TV and movie projects but only a few people know that she’s actually a single mom who will do everything to raise her daughter well.

Tom Cruise's “All You Need is Kill” to Invade Theaters Worldwide Soon

The upcoming epic sci-fi thriller, starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and based on the book All You Need is Kill, will open on March 14, 2014, from Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures. The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Being directed by Doug Liman, the film is the first motion picture to be shot at the recently christened Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and began principal photography October 1.

The story unfolds in a near future in which a hive-like alien race, called Mimics, have hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, shredding great cities to rubble and leaving millions of human casualties in their wake. No army in the world can match the speed, brutality or seeming prescience of the weaponized Mimic fighters or their telepathic commanders. But now the world’s armies have joined forces for a last stand offensive against the alien horde, with no second chances.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously demoted and then dropped - untrained and ill-equipped - into what amounts to little more than a suicide mission. Cage is killed within minutes, managing to take an Alpha down with him. But, impossibly, he awakens back at the beginning of the same hellish day, and is forced to fight and die again…and again. Direct physical contact with the alien has thrown him into a time loop - dooming him to live out the same brutal combat over and over.

But with each pass, Cage becomes tougher, smarter, and able to engage the Mimics with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt), who has lain waste to more Mimics than anyone on Earth. As Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated battle becomes an opportunity to find the key to annihilating the alien invaders and saving the Earth.

Oscar® nominee Cruise (the “Mission: Impossible” films, “Collateral,” “Jerry Maguire”) and Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada,” “The Adjustment Bureau”) lead an international cast that also includes Bill Paxton (“Aliens,” HBO’s “Big Love”), Jonas Armstrong (BBC TV’s “Robin Hood”), Tony Way (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”), Kick Gurry (Australian TV’s “Tangle”), Franz Drameh (“Attack the Block”), Dragomir Mrsic (“Snabba Cash II”), and Charlotte Riley (“World Without End”).

Liman (“The Bourne Identity,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) is directing the film from a screenplay by Dante Harper, Christopher McQuarrie and Joby Harold, based on the acclaimed novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Erwin Stoff (“The Blind Side,” “I Am Legend”), Gregory Jacobs (“Contagion”) and Jeffrey Silver (“300”) are the producers. The executive producers are Jason Hoffs, Joby Harold, Doug Liman, Dave Bartis, Tom Lassally, Hidemi Fukuhara, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Alex Garcia and Bruce Berman, with Tim Lewis and Kim Winther serving as co-producers. (Credits are not final.)

The behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Dion Beebe (“Memoirs of a Geisha”), production designer Oliver Scholl (“Jumper,” “Independence Day”), editor James Herbert (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows”), costume designer Kate Hawley (upcoming “Pacific Rim”), and Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis (“The Dark Knight”).

The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Frencheska Farr Gives “Tinig” Her Best Shot

Frencheska Farr Gives “Tinig” Her Best Shot

Kapuso singer and actress Frencheska Farr first admitted that she got scared in giving justice to Dulce’s role because of the depth of the diva’s character and story.

But that did not stop her from performing her best. Instead, she took it upon herself to bring out the most moving act and deliver the most convincing lines she could ever show.

I was challenged with the role and I really want to give it my all. Even though I haven’t experienced all those painful moments in my life yet, I still want to do good,” says Frencheska.

And so, the talented singer did not waste a moment. Not wanting to disappoint Dulce as well as herself, Frencheska did her own research in knowing the complete story behind Dulce’s name and fame. The unabridged story was told to her by the Asia’s Diva herself.

I did my own research. I talked with Tita Dulce, we met for lunch and I asked her to tell me the full, unedited version of her story. I wanted to fully grasp the emotions in each scene. Thankfully, she happily told me everything,”shares the young diva.

Frencheska adds, “People should watch Tita Dulce’s story. It’s more than just a show. It’s more than just a production. It’s a blessing from God. Like me, they too will discover lessons that will change their lives.”

Frencheska and Dulce have worked together before in the hit musical Emir. No wonder these two talented singers work and get along well in any production they’re paired in. Witness Frencheska Farr’s acting prowess as Asia’s Diva Dulce in Tinig together with Isabella De Leon, John Arcilla, Icko Gonzalez, Miguel Estenzo, Nash Bueno, and Princess Snell

Watch Tinig: The True-to-Life Story of Dulce on its new date, October 7, 10:30 p.m. on GMA Sunday Night Box Office. Directed by Derrek Adapon and written by Icko Gonzalez, Tinig is produced by CBN Asia (Christian Broadcasting Network), producer of the daily inspirational show The 700 Club Asia.

Markki Stroem Releases Thousands of Pieces” Album with a Free Concert at Bonifacio High Street Activity Area on October 5

Markki Stroem Releases Thousands of Pieces” Album with a Free Concert at Bonifacio High Street Activity Area on October 5

Singer - songwriter - theater actor and now being tagged as “Sexy Soul/Jazz Artist” Markki Stroem may have been introduced via the talent show Pilipinas Got Talent years ago, but it was last year that the public realized how gifted he is as a musician when he released an original song and music video online and on MYX “Steal Your Soul”, easily topped the charts and stayed there for couple of months. The song highlighted the distinct sound of Markki and unique songwriting style.

Because of the favorable response the song received, he was given the chance to star in a concert “Make Me Sweat” last February in Music Museum with the G-Force and now released his much awaited debut album “Thousands of Pieces” produced by Cornerstone Music. The CD includes his carrier single - a jazzed-up cover of Carley Rae Jepsen’s hit song “Call Me Maybe”, which is currently becoming a big radio hit. Markki also gave Britney Spear’s “Toxic” an exciting twist which is definitely a surefire hit once released.

But more than the covers featured in the album, it underscores Markki’s gift of writing music. Original songs written and arranged by Markki himself depict various state of the heart, relationships and life. “Kung Pwede Lang Ibalik”, “Illicit Activities”, “Fall From Grace”, “Iron Curtain” and “Exchanging Glances”.

I really consider this my ‘baby’ because I have been a part of the whole creative process,” says Markki. “I am very thankful that I was given this chance to work on a very personal album like this.” He also added that he is mighty thankful that he got to work with some of the most artistic people in the business – singer Zia Quizon, production house Generation M and his own band.

Being part of the ASAP 2012 family, the show launched his album last September 23 and another single’s music video “Thousands Of Pieces” (the album’s title track) was premiered on MYX featuring the Goddess of Cosplay Alodia Gosiengfiao and Pinoy Big Brother Unlimited Big Winner Slater Young.

Markki’s versatility is undeniable. Aside from being a musician, he is also currently working on two big projects which will be shown before the year ends. He will be playing the character of Joe Jonas in “Camp Rock” the musical and will portray a different and very exciting role (one of the lead casts) in an independent film “Slumber Party” – a Cinema One Originals entry. Not to mention his most talked about walk in the recently concluded Cosmopolitan Bachelor Bash as one of the Top 10 hottest men.

On October 5, Friday, Cornerstone Music, Magic 89.9 and Bonifacio Global City (BGC) will stage Markki’s grand album launch at the Bonifacio High Street Activity Area at 7 pm with his amazing band and some special guest performer/s. It’s a free show so hope everybody gets to catch Markki live on this much long awaited grand album launch.

Adele Sings James Bond Movie Theme Song ‘Skyfall’

Adele Sings James Bond Movie Theme Song ‘Skyfall’

British pop sensation Adele will premiere her latest recording “Skyfall,” the official theme song to the upcoming 007 adventure of the same name, globally via her official site (www.Adele.tv) on Friday October 5th at 0:07 BST/London time (7:07pm EST on October 4th).

The track will be available to purchase as a download immediately after this premiere. The track is available for pre-order at iTunes (http://smarturl.it/AdeleSkyfall).

October 5th marks the 50th anniversary of the release of “Dr. No,” and thus the James Bond film franchise, and will be celebrated as Global James Bond Day.

After reading the script for the film, Adele enlisted Paul Epworth to co-write and produce the theme song to “Skyfall.” Adele admits, “I was a little hesitant at first to be involved with the theme song for Skyfall. There’s a lot of instant spotlight and pressure when it comes to a Bond song. But I fell in love with the script and Paul had some great ideas for the track and it ended up being a bit of a no brainer to do it in the end. It was also a lot of fun writing to a brief, something I’ve never done which made it exciting. When we recorded the strings, it was one of the proudest moments of my life. I’ll be back combing my hair when I’m 60 telling people I was a Bond girl back in the day I’m sure!” Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, “Skyfall” features the lush accompaniment of a 77-piece orchestra.

“Skyfall” is the first recording by Adele since releasing her massively successful sophomore album “21” in early 2011. To date “21” has sold over 24 million albums worldwide and garnered Adele 6 Grammy Awards, 2 BRIT Awards and 2 Ivor Novello Awards. “21” is the biggest selling album of both 2011 and 2012.

In “Skyfall,” James Bond’s (Daniel Craig) loyalty to M (Judi Dench) is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.

When Bond’s latest assignment goes gravely wrong and agents around the world are exposed, MI6 is attacked forcing M to relocate the agency. These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows – aided only by field agent, Eve (Naomie Harris) – following a trail to the mysterious Silva (Javier Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.

Opening across the Philippines on October 31, “Skyfall” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International.

Chris Diamantopoulos Talks About His Role as Moe in ‘The Three Stooges’

Chris Diamantopoulos Talks About His Role as Moe in ‘The Three Stooges’

The Three Stooges debuted on the big screen in the 1930 black-and-white feature, “Soup to Nuts,” in which they appeared opposite veteran vaudevillian Ted Healy (1896-1937).

It was Healy who accidentally discovered the Howard brothers (Moses and Samuel Horwitz, nicknamed, respectively, Moe and Shemp) during a 1922 stage performance in Brooklyn (the third member, Larry Fine, whose birthname was Louis Feinberg, came into the fold in 1925). Initially billed as “Ted Healy and His Stooges,” the concept had the trio (Moe, Larry and Shemp) act as foils, or “stooges” to Healy’s jokes. It may have been Healy telling the jokes, but The Stooges were getting all the laughs.

With the renewed popularity of the comedy trio in syndicated television in recent years, it made sense to revive the franchise in a brand new motion picture.

In “The Three Stooges” movie, the trio – Larry, Moe and Curly are introduced as three orphans dropped on the doorstep of an orphanage, ultimately raised by nuns in a very sheltered manner. The only pop culture references they have is from the very limited amount of television they’ve seen, so they don’t really have a concept of what’s going on in the outside world and they stay childlike because they are with children. They’re the ones that don’t get adopted year after year, but then they have to save the orphanage from being shut down. That’s when they’re released into the world, and of course the world colliding with these three nitwits is where the hilarity ensues.

Get to know the leader of the iconic hilarious trio in the following q&a with Chris Diamantopoulos who plays Mo in the movie.

Q: Are you able to do things with these characters that the original Stooges couldn’t?
A: What’s cool is the three guys never really got a chance to show everything that they could do. They were limited by the budgets, by the studios, even by the era, so they had to do what they had to do. There was tremendous talent within the three of them and it’s kind of great that we’re getting a chance to honor and humanize them.

Q: Mo’s pudding bowl haircut was especially iconic: it looks like they’ve done a great job in recreating his look.
A: Actually a lot of people I speak to assume that Mo’s hair was a wig, but the story behind Mo’s hair is awesome. When he was a little kid he had this really thick, luscious, curly head of hair and the kids at school made fun of him until he couldn’t take it anymore. One day he went to a friend’s house after school, pushed his hair forward and took huge shears and just cut all the way around. He was afraid to go home because he thought his mom and dad were going to punish him and ultimately his mom said to him, ‘I’m glad you did it. I didn’t have the heart to do it.’ And thus a comedy legend was born.

Q: Did you do the same kind of slapstick and did you do your own stunts?
A: Yeah – we should get those t-shirts that say, ‘I do my own stunts.’ We actually did a great deal of them. There are a lot of physical stunts in terms of hitting and slapping and poking and punching and kicking and pulling – I broke my finger poking Curly in the eye! We’ve bruised our jaws, hurt our elbows… it could have been really bad actually.

Q: How are you coping with all the slapping?
A: I finally realized how hard it hurts! Our ears were red – they were ringing. We realized early on that there was no way to keep the intensity and emotion behind the physical stuff without actually going for it.

Q: Do you see this as the beginning of a franchise?
A: That would be awesome. I started watching The Stooges religiously and obsessively when I was probably about four or five years old till around the age of 18. I loved them so very much when I was a kid, and when I heard about this film ten years ago I was dubious, as I’m sure many people still are.

Diamantopoulos was destined to play the intolerant leader of the comedy trio - he was born four days after the death of Moe Howard (May 4, 1975). He split his childhood between Canada and Greece (Greek is his first language), began appearing in Canadian TV commercials at age nine.

Following his secondary schooling, he left home to perform in a series of U.S. national tours. He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Che Guevara in Pittsburgh CLO’s 2000 production of “Evita.” A year later, he debuted on Broadway as Ethan Girard in the popular Tony-nominated musical, “The Full Monty.” He has also essayed the role of Marius in the long-running musical “Les Miserables,” and most recently starred opposite wife Becki Newton in Jerry Zaks’ Encore!presentation of the Gershwin musical, “Girl Crazy” at New York’s famed City Center Theater.

On the small screen, Diamantopoulos is well-known for several diverse character portrayals – ”The Starter Wife,” “The Kennedys,” “24,” and in “Behind The Camera: Mork & Mindy.” Diamantopoulos made his film debut in the starring role of the 2000 drama, “The Adulterer,” and includes among his feature credits “Drop Dead Roses,” “Into The Fire,” “Wedding Daze,” “Three Days To Vegas,” and “Under New Management.”

“The Three Stooges” opens October 24 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
