The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) confirmed the network superiority of Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) following the release of the results of its network quality tests for the second quarter of this year which showed Smart posting significantly better test results than Globe Telecom.
Globe, however, issued a statement that attempted to turn the results of the NTC’S Quality of Service Benchmarking Test upside down.
According to that test, Smart’s network rated higher in four of the five parameters that had been defined by the NTC in consultation with all three mobile phone operators. These four important parameters where Smart posted better scores are:
1) Drop Call Rate
2) Call Set Up Time
3) Average Signal Quality
4) Average Receive Signal Level
In its statement, however, Globe conveniently downplayed or disregarded these parameters and focused on the “blocked call” parameter, which was the only test that showed better results for Globe. On that basis, Globe said that its “legacy network” was better than that of Smart.
This is the same legacy network that Globe officials have admitted, in several recent occasions, to be congested.
This selective reading of the test results defies arithmetic, and, more importantly, flies in the face of consumer experience.
Globe’s press statement also contains a substantive misinterpretation of the test results in one of the key parameters – the Average Receive Signal Level. Globe said in its statement that: “The final metric is the Average Receive Signal Level with a minimum acceptable range of -85 dBm. Both telcos did not make it to the standard.”
The truth, however, is quite different: Both carriers actually passed the standard. Globe registered a score of -69.83 dBm. But Smart delivered lopsidedly better results: -62.63 dBm. In this parameter, the lower the negative number is, the better the signal. Translated into layman’s terms, what this result means is that Smart’s signal level is up to five times stronger than Globe’s. In terms of customer experience, a stronger signal level means better indoor coverage, resulting in better voice quality, less drop calls, faster and more reliable SMS and higher data speeds.
Though we are encouraged by the NTC test which validates our network superiority, Smart continues to work hard in order to provide our customers superior service. By completing our network transformation in mid-2012, we are now moving on to deliver to our subscribers next generation services such as the Long Term Evolution, or LTE. This is vital because we realize that, in the end, it is the satisfaction and judgment of our customers that really matter.

Juan Ponce Enrile's Life Documentary Airs on ABS-CBN this Sunday
Why did Juan Ponce Enrile turn against President Ferdinand Marcos? What does he know about the assassination of Benigno ‘Ninoy’ Aquino and the human rights violations during the Martial Law period?
Senate President Enrile will address decades-old controversies and bare his life story to Filipinos for the first time in a special two-hour documentary that will tackle the roles he played in the country’s tumultuous history that will air this Sunday (September 23) on ABS-CBN.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the declaration of martial law, ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs will go behind the scenes and walk through the corridors of power with Enrile to attempt to answer questions that have been in the public’s consciousness for years.
Get the facts straight from the people who have encountered, worked and clashed with the man who has always been eyed with suspicion and regarded with fear for being the defense minister during the Martial Law regime and for allegedly plotting a coup against the late President Cory Aquino. Despite this, history also saw him as the EDSA Revolution hero who helped oust the Marcos regime 26 years ago and the judicious presiding judge of the Senate impeachment court that convicted Chief Justice Renato Corona drew raves from supporters and critics alike.
At 88, Enrile insists distortions of Philippine history must be corrected before he retires.
What part of history needs to be changed? Who is the real Juan Ponce Enrile? Is a hero or a heel? Don’t miss “Johnny: The Juan Ponce Enrile Story” this Sunday (September 23) in Sunday’s Best after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN.
80 Thousand Participants Expected to Run, Ride & Roll for the Pasig River on September 30
Over 80,000 participants are expected to show up at the Quezon City Memorial Circle (QCMC) on September 30 to take part in the “09.30.2012 Run, Ride & Roll for the Pasig River” that will help raise awareness and funds for waterways flowing into the Pasig River.
Different schools, non-government organizations, government agencies, and companies, have pledged support for the advocacy event that features running, cycling, and skateboarding races and will fund the rehabilitation of esteros in Quezon City.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles as ABS-CBN Foundation’s Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) will forego cups at water stations positioned along Commonwealth Station to promote environmental awareness and support the Quezon City local government’s mandate to regulate the use of plastic bags in city stores, markets and business establishments.
Lanes that will be used for the race will be closed at 12 m.n. on September 30, while the two outer lanes on both sides of Commonwealth Avenue will remain open to traffic on race day. SM North Edsa and Trinoma, meanwhile, will open their parking lots early for participants with vehicles. The Metro Rail Transit (MRT) will also offer free rides from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. to those who will be presenting their race bibs.
Kapamilya actors Piolo Pascual and Matteo Guidicelli will lead the CEO River Warrior Run, which is closed to the public and is exclusive to business executives who are also donors of KBPIP. Meanwhile, Kim Chiu, Maja Salvador, Maricar Reyes, and Xian Lim will take part in the 5km Morning Madness Run.
Major categories include the 15K Ride & Roll for cyclists and skateboarders with 4:00 a.m. gunstart; the 15K Commonwealth Challenge Run with 4:10 a.m. gunstart; and the 5K Morning Madness Run with 6:00 a.m. gunstart. There will be only be one starting line for all categories that starts from the QCMC going straight to Commonwealth Avenue then back again to QCMC for the finish.
The move to revive esteros in Quezon City is part of KBPIP’s seven-year rehabilitation program that involves cleaning up all the esteros that drain into the Pasig River in order to thoroughly clean it.
It has organized three successful runs, namely the 2009 Philippine International Marathon: A Run for the Pasig River with an estimated 23,000 participants, the historic 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River that broke the Guinness World Record for the “most participants in a racing event” with 116,087 runners, and last year’s 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River was the largest foot race joined by 86,547 runners.
These runs have funded the rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila, and that of Estero de San Miguel and four other esteros behind the Malacañang Palace. These esteros have been beautified and rehabilitated by relocating thousands of families living along the waterways, building linear parks, training of River Warriors or community volunteers who clean and guard the esteros against polluters, and installing active island reactors to bring life back into the estero waters. Streetlights were also put up by the City of Manila along Estero de Paco last July to attract sightseers and make it a model for rehabilitation of other waterways.
The 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River won a Bronze Anvil and an Award of Excellence at the 45th Anvil Awards given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, while the Estero de Paco clean-up earned an Award of Merit from the 2010 Philippine Quill Awards given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.
Registration for the 09.30.2012 Run for the Pasig River is ongoing at SM North EDSA, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, R.O.X, Chris Sports Festival Mall and Chris Sports Glorietta. Registration is until September 29. Aside from the registration, there will also be merchandise available in the SM booths, in which part of the proceeds will also go to the river rehabilitation. Auditions for TV5 Newest Game Show "The Million Peso Money Drop" Continue on September 23
TV5’s new game show, The Million Peso Money Drop, continues its auditions for pairs up for the show’s challenge. Head to TV5 Broadway in Quezon City early on Sunday, September 23, since registration will only be from 9:00 to 11:00 AM only.
Interested pairs must be aged 18 to 60 years old and physically fit. They must also bring the following:
Two (2) valid IDs
One 2x2 photograph of themselves
An original NBI clearance
Developed by Endemol, "Million Peso Money Drop" is a TV5 franchise of hit American game show which aired on Fox. It is based on the UK series The Million Pound Drop Live where a team of two people with a pre-existing relationship is presented with $1,000,000 in $20 bills, banded in 50 bundles of $20,000 each. The team must risk the entire amount on each of seven multiple-choice questions.
For each question, the contestants choose one of two categories, then indicate which answer they wish to risk their money on by moving the bundles of cash onto a row of trap doors, termed "drops," each of which corresponds to one answer. However, they must always keep at least one drop "clear" with no money on it. In addition, six of the seven questions have a time limit; any money that is not placed on an answer when time runs out will be lost.
Once the money is in place, the trap doors for the incorrect answers are opened, and the cash on them falls out of sight and is lost. The contestants then continue the game using the cash they had placed on the correct answer. Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas in “Ruby Sparks”
A once bestselling author who is suffering from writer’s block finds inspiration once again writing about his ideal girl whom he named Ruby Sparks. Paul Dano, whose remarkable performances in “Little Miss Sunshine” and “There Will Be Blood” stars in “Ruby Sparks,” a story that his real-life girlfriend Zoe Kazan wrote. The movie is fittingly brought to life by married pair of directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris whose previous feature “Little Miss Sunshine” was nominated for four Academy Awards® including Best Picture.
Paul Dano stars as Calvin who finds true love out his work of fiction. Inspired to write about his ideal girl after a long hiatus, Ruby Sparks suddenly comes to life and in Calvin’s apartment, filling every gap of his once solitary existence. But in Calvin’s case, fear is holding him back both in his professional and romantic pursuits. “He’s definitely missing something in his life. There’s an absence. There’s sort of a hole,” notes Dano.
Ruby is custom designed specifically to fit into that hole, but when she shows up in his life she also opens up a whole new world for Calvin, who has long dwelled in the limbo between youth and adulthood, not ready to take the leap. Dano explains, “I think before Calvin can properly love somebody he has to learn to love himself. His relationship with Ruby could be a really beautiful thing but he has to grow up before he can do it right. Calvin is learning that you can’t control life and he’s got to get comfortable with that.”
Once Calvin is convinced that Ruby is not his own wild hallucination but someone everyone can see and hear, he realizes he is going to have to explain her to the people in his world – from his family and friends to his shrink and agent.
Surrounding Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan in these colorful roles are some of Hollywood’s most accomplished and popular actors including Annette Bening as Calvin’s mother Gertrude, Antonio Banderas as Gertrude’s boyfriend, Elliott Gould as Calvin’s psychiatrist, Steve Coogan as his literary rival and Chris Messina as his brother – each of whom were drawn by the story’s mix of comedy, romance and emotions.
Three-time Golden Globe® nominee Banderas and four time Oscar® nominee Bening came aboard to portray Calvin’s New Age mother Gertrude and her bohemian lover Mort – who charm Ruby as much as they irritate and embarrass Calvin with their sexual liberation.
Banderas had a lot of fun with Mort’s cloying charm, and the filmmakers enjoyed watching him dive headlong into the role with no inhibitions. Says producer Yerxa: “Antonio as Mort embodies this kind of overt sexuality and free-form, anti-establishment playfulness. He’s totally effusive and loving and that’s what makes Calvin, who is wound pretty tight, resist him. I can’t wait for the audience to see how Annette and Antonio play off each other.”
Gertrude gave Bening a chance to do something quite different, as producer Albert Berger explains: “The great thing about Annette in this role is we haven’t seen her play this type of woman ever. In many of her roles, she brings both a comic and serious intensity, and extends that in a new direction.”
For Kazan, knowing that Bening would take the role was itself a kind of dream come true. “When I heard she was going to do the movie, I cried, because I knew this was real,” she recalls. “Having her and Antonio together was like a supernova. There was something so connected in them that you feel like these two people could really be a couple.”
“Ruby Sparks” is now showing in Philippine theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.
InterAksyon.com Holds Martial Law Exhibit on 40th Anniversary
On September 21, 1972, President Ferdinand Marcos placed the country under Martial Law through Proclamation No. 1081. Thousands of Filipinos were incarcerated during this dark period in the country’s history. On the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law, TV5’s online news portal InterAksyon.com will open the Martial Law Museum at UP Diliman’s Palma Hall lobby to the public.
This coming Friday (September 21), InterAksyon editor-in-chief Roby Alampay will lead the unveiling of the exhibit titled “Never Again: Isang Paggunita sa Batas Militar.” When asked about the concept behind the presentation, Alampay shared: “We want to connect the young generation to what happened in the past to give them a direct and personal link to the suffering during the Marcos era.”
Interactive and educational, the Martial Law Museum takes visitors through several stations that include a photo gallery, art installations, musical renditions and digitized sounds of personal accounts of some 10,000 people affected by Martial Law. “This (exhibit) will educate, empower and equip the public to qualify and reject the revisionist campaign which seek to paint the Martial Law years in a completely positive light,” Alampay added.
In the coming days, visitors will be able to listen to the recorded accounts of those who were tortured and imprisoned during the Martial Law era via installed booths within the exhibit. InterAksyon.com encourages the youth to take note of these accounts which will also be made available online via a special microsite (http://www.interaksyon.com/40-years-after-martial-law).
Earlier this month, InterAksyon.com began a special series of multimedia features on those who lived through Martial Law. “In the series, we document and give a voice to those who people who disappeared, were tortured and murdered. We were also able to capture the painful memories of those who suffered during Martial Law. We hope the current generation to never forget that time in our history as our country moves forward,” shared Alampay.
Apart from its on-ground and online campaigns, InterAksyon.com complements its commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law via social media. Those on Twitter can use #NeverForget when sharing their insights about Martial Law and its aftermath. The Martial Law Museum will run from September 21 to 28 at the lobby of Palma Hall at UP Diliman. Those interested to find out more can log on to InterAksyon’s microsite (http://www.interaksyon.com/40-years-after-martial-law).
Steve Carell Seeks a Friend “For The End of the World”
Steve Carell takes audiences on a humorous, moving, and intimate journey against an epic backdrop of Earth’s final days, in Focus Features' critically acclaimed comedy “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.”
Set in a too-near future where time at once stands still and is slipping away forever, the film explores what people will do and how they will feel when humanity’s end is near.
“Seeking a Friend” will be shown soon exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt3 and Trinoma).
In the film, a 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge (Carell); the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot.
Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while his neighbor Penny (Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who hasn’t. From these opposite perspectives, both initially choose to navigate the impending end of the world with blinders on.
Producer Joy Gorman Wettels says, "The lead role of Dodge is that of a man who, with the world now coming to end, realizes that he regrets his entire life. An insurance salesman by trade, he hasn't taken risks in his existence. He thinks of his long-ago love - and is moved to act on that yearning.
"In order for this to play believably on-screen, Dodge has to be someone that you can see yourself in, or your dad, your brother, your husband. Steve Carell engenders so much goodwill and conveys such warmth; he is an Everyman. People relate to him; he was the only choice for Dodge."
Carell remarks, "I read the script and could not stop thinking about it. It haunted me, to an extent. It was funny, sweet, emotionally intense at times, and a story that I hadn't seen. This is the flip side of `Armageddon,' there's no president with a hot line to the astronauts who are going to blow up the asteroid. `Seeking a Friend for the End of the World' is what's happening while all of those things are going on; how ordinary human beings respond, and the choices they make when they know that everything is going to be over in a matter of days.”
The actor honed in on his character straight away, noting, "Initially, Dodge doesn't want to deal with what's happening; he continues to go to his job. But then he decides to come to terms with his impending demise and with the end of the world; he is going to make a pilgrimage, to visit his high-school sweetheart Olivia and try to reconnect with her. He's always idealized her as the love of his life, and before it all ends, he wants to be with her."
"I think this, in a big way, is what our movie is about: people connecting with one another, or attempting to, when faced with something momentous. Your perspective changes," says Carell.
Director Lorene Scafaria compares Carell to "actors who could do comedy with pitch perfect timing but also be subtle and still, like Peter Sellers or Jack Lemmon; Steve can do so much with a look.
"We were ridiculously lucky to have him. When making a movie, he is a collaborative, generous, kindhearted gentleman."
James Bond “Skyfall” Reveals British, U.S. Posters
Marketing materials for the new James Bond film “Skyfall” continue to pour in. Two significantly different versions of posters have been revealed – the British version shows a tuxedo-clad Daniel Craig on his feet, while the US art has the actor shooting on his back.

These events cause her authority and position to be challenged by Gareth Mallory (Fiennes), the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee. With MI6 now compromised from both inside and out, M is left with one ally she can trust: Bond. 007 takes to the shadows – aided only by field agent, Eve (Harris) – following a trail to the mysterious Silva (Bardem), whose lethal and hidden motives have yet to reveal themselves.
The film is directed by Sam Mendes. Produced by Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Written by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade and John Logan.

“Argo” U.S. and International Posters Released
Riding on the wave of successful premieres in Toronto and Telluride film festivals, Warner Bros. has just released two versions of international (outside U.S.) posters for Ben Affleck's gripping thriller “Argo.”
Based on true events, “Argo” chronicles the life-or-death covert operation to rescue six Americans, which unfolded behind the scenes of the Iran hostage crisis - the truth of which was unknown by the public for decades.
Academy Award® winner Ben Affleck (“The Town,” “Good Will Hunting”) directs and stars in the film, which is being produced by Academy Award® winner George Clooney (“Syriana”), Oscar® nominee Grant Heslov (“Good Night, and Good Luck.”) and Affleck.
On November 4, 1979, as the Iranian revolution reaches its boiling point, militants storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. But, in the midst of the chaos, six Americans manage to slip away and find refuge in the home of the Canadian ambassador. Knowing it is only a matter of time before the six are found out and likely killed, a CIA “exfiltration” specialist named Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a risky plan to get them safely out of the country. A plan so incredible, it could only happen in the movies.
“Argo” also stars Oscar® winner Alan Arkin (“Little Miss Sunshine”), Bryan Cranston (TV’s “Breaking Bad”) and John Goodman (“You Don’t Know Jack”). The main cast also includes Kerry Bishé, Kyle Chandler, Rory Cochrane, Christopher Denham, Tate Donovan, Clea DuVall, Victor Garber, Zeljko Ivanek, Richard Kind, Scoot McNairy, Chris Messina, Michael Parks, and Taylor Schilling.
Affleck is directing the film from a screenplay by Chris Terrio, based on a selection from Master in Disguise by Antonio Mendez. David Klawans, Chris Brigham, Graham King, Tim Headington, Chay Carter and Nina Wolarsky are serving as executive producers.
Slated for release in the Philippines in October 17, “Argo” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
