Daniel Padilla is Cinema One's Rising Star

Kapamilya heartthrob Daniel Padilla takes the spotlight in Cinema One’s “Rising Star.”

Since his debut as a primetime actor and singer, Daniel’s career has been constantly on the rise. On Cinema One’s Rising Star, the talented actor will share his experiences in the romantic royalty-themed primetime television series, “Princess and I”, his team-up with Kathryn Bernardo and the success of his first album, Hinahanap-Hanap Kita that was given a Gold Record Award only after ten days of its release. The album literally ‘flew off the shelves’ as it sold more than 10,000 copies in less than a week. “It’s always been my dream to have my own album that’s why I am really happy that I was given this opportunity. I am really enjoying this chance not just for me, but for my fans as well,” he said.

Find out more about Daniel’s plans, dreams and aspirations on Cinema One’s Rising Star on August 14, Tuesday, 7:00 p.m.

Julie Anne San Jose Self-Titled Album Debuts at No. 1 on iTunes Chart

Just hours after it debuted in the online music store iTunes today, August 10, Julie Anne San Jose‘s self-titled recording album hit the no. 1 spot in the said online multimedia portal, according to an update from GMA Records, the album’s producer.

The downloadable version was made available online a day earlier than the album’s grand launch tomorrow on Party Pilipinas. The compact disc versions, however, will be available in music stores nationwide beginning next weekend.

The 10-track album contains both originals and revivals including the carrier single “I’ll be there.” The music video of the carrier single, which also featured Julie Anne’s onscreen partner Elmo Magalona, was launched last month in Party Pilipinas. It was directed by Party Pilipinas co-director Mark Reyes. It has been viewed on the video sharing site YouTube almost one million times since its upload a day after its TV debut.

“Grabe, sobrang nagulat talaga ako na malaman na no. 1 na yung album sa iTunes. I feel so blessed and I am really thankful to all the fans and supporters who downloaded my album. I hope mapasaya ko kayo sa album ko. Maraming salamat po talaga,” said Julie Anne in an interview before she engaged in a live chat with fans this afternoon via www.gmanetwork.com.

The launching of Julie Anne’s album coincides with the premiere of her movie with Elmo Magalona, “Just One Summer,” which will hit theaters nationwide beginning Wednesday, August 15. The movie is directed by Mac Alejandre and produced by GMA Films.

GMA Network Enhances TV Experience with the Most Interactive Media Web Portal in the Philippines

GMA Network Enhances TV Experience with the Most Interactive Media Web Portal in the Philippines

While GMA Network, Inc. continues its dominance in nationwide TV ratings, the media company has also become the frequent hub of millions of Kapuso netizens in the country and all over the world with its comprehensive content and its highly interactive media experience.

GMA Chairman and CEO Felipe L. Gozon says that the media portal perfectly complements the Company's broadcast operations. "Since it was launched eight months ago, GMANetwork.com, the most comprehensive media portal in the country, has enabled visitors to easily access the latest in news and information, as well as updates on the Company’s digital properties.”

GMA President and COO Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr., further notes, “Whatever the media platform - traditional, non-traditional or emerging - GMA Network makes sure that it is there to meet the evolving needs of its audience. GMANetwork.com engages our viewers around the globe with the latest news stories and web-exclusive content, while enabling them to access information about their favorite shows and Kapuso personalities.”

GMA VP for Program Support Regie C. Bautista adds that “Digital platform developments and changes in media consumption in the last few years have made it natural for GMA to deliver content to our online audience through GMANetwork.com. As the Filipino’s Kapuso station, it is important for us to make our communication and content available to our local and international audience as well as provide a venue where our viewers can engage with our brand directly online.

Keeping up-to-date on the Kapuso Network is also made easy. The portal features the live social media feeds from the official accounts of GMA Network shows, artists, and news personalities. A complete directory in the Community site offers a quick look at all official accounts.

Just as the portal brought together GMA Network’s digital properties, visitors to the site can now link their accounts from various social media networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter. This allows a more seamless social media experience where one can simply click, like, and share. Kapuso netizens can react and comment on the various rich media content on the site. They can even share articles, photos, videos that catch their attention.

The interactivity does not end there as Kapuso celebrities take time to reach out to viewers online. Fans from all over can ask questions, or send messages, which the stars enthusiastically reply to. Those who are lucky are even greeted live by the celebrity through the webcam.

Meanwhile, GMA News and Public Affairs empowers ordinary Filipinos to participate in the news-gathering process through YouScoop, the pioneering citizen journalism tool of GMA News Online.

GMA News Online Editor-in-Chief and VP for Multimedia Journalism Howie Severino says that his team aims to move eyeballs from the tube to the web, and vice versa. "There is an inherent link between the two media," Severino notes. "Since television can only contain information that will fit into its limited airtime, our news site plays a perfectly complementary role by providing breadth and depth to the news, as well as interactive content that is one of the unique contributions of the web."

Of course, YouScoop is not for the exclusive use of those in the Philippines. GMA International encourages Filipinos abroad to send online overseas news items through this tool. Several international news items have actually been aired over GMA's TV channels.

GMA International also invites the most in-demand Kapuso stars to go on Skype dates with international subscribers of GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV, and GMA News TV International. Dingdong Dantes, Marian Rivera, and Dennis Trillo are among those who have participated in this promotional activity that was a huge hit especially among US-based subscribers.

The one-stop site for all things Kapuso, GMANetwork.com has the latest on everything Kapuso, with individual sites for GMA Public Affairs, GMA News TV, Radio GMA, Kapuso Foundation, GMA Films, GMA Records, Community, and Corporate.

Always in step with the latest in digital technology, there is no doubt that GMA Network is committed to keep delivering media experience unlike any other.

Nora Aunor, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Artista Academy Students and Other TV5 Stars Unite to Help Flood Victims

Nora Aunor, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Artista Academy Students and Other TV5 Stars Unite to Help Flood Victims

The latest onslaught of torrential rains emphasized how the Filipino spirit is indeed weather-proof. Although Metro Manila and neighboring provinces were left paralyzed by the monsoon, Filipinos from all parts of the country came together in aid of those most in need.

One of the groups organizing comprehensive rescue and relief programs is TV5, through RESCUE5 and the Alagang Kapatid Foundation. Hundreds of thousands of displaced citizens were able to benefit from TV5’s continuous operations. Kapatid stars also took part in various aspects of the network’s efforts to help those affected by the rains.

The Superstar herself, Nora Aunor, helped pack relief goods at the TV5 Broadway office, which is one of the drop-off points for donations coursed through Alagang Kapatid Foundation. Danita Paner and IC Mendoza also joined the relief operations. Ate Guy and other TV5 volunteers headed to the Sta. Lucia covered court in Novaliches to distribute goods to the families taking shelter in the evacuation center.

Artista Academy
host Marvin Agustin also pledged 1,000 cooked meals to be delivered to flood victims. Meanwhile, Wil Time Bigtime host Willie Revillame donated 200 relief goods and cash through his own Wil Foundation. Divine Lee was one of the first celebrities to use Twitter to help in relief and rescue operations, even setting up a mini-call center to handle distress calls and endorsements to RESCUE5. She was co-host of the Philippine version of Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

TV5 princess Jasmine Curtis Smith flew all the way from Melbourne to help in the relief efforts of Alagang Kapatid Foundation. Earlier today, Jasmine handled calls at the telethon organized by Good Morning Club with Enchanted Garden star Meg Imperial. Miss World Philippines 2012 runners up Mary Ann Ross Misa and Brenna Cassandra Gamboa also manned the phones. April “Congrats” Gustilo helped pack goods at the NEWS5 Aksyon Center.

The waters may have subsided but the challenge of recovery remains. The Alagang Kapatid Foundation is still accepting volunteers to help repack and transport relief goods to evacuation centers in affected towns and cities. Donations can be brought to the Alagang Kapatid Foundation office at 730 Quirino Highway, San Bartolome in Novaliches. Other drop-off points and volunteer assembly areas are TV5’s Broadway office along Aurora Boulevard and Delta Studios along Quezon Avenue - also in Quezon City. For more information on how to help, log on to InterAksyon.com.

The Superstar Nora Aunor herself joined in the relief efforts held at the TV5 Delta Theater, along with IC Mendoza and Danita Paner.

May pagasa pa ba?

Hooooo...

Hanggang ngayon, ikaw parin
Ang hinahanap ng puso’t isipan
Hanggang ngayon walang iba
Sa puso ikaw lamang sinta
Hanggang ngayon...

May pag asa kaya?, na Makita kang muli
At makapiling ka sa bawat sandal
Sana ay marinig ang tangi kong hiling
Hooo....

Hanggang ngayon, ikaw parin
Ang hinahanap ng puso’t isipan
Hanggang ngayon walang iba
Sa puso ikaw lamang sinta
Hanggang ngayon...

Maghihintay at aasa pang muli
Sana ikaw ay magbalik..

Hanggang ngayon, ikaw parin
Ang hinahanap ng puso’t isipan
Hanggang ngayon walang iba
Sa puso ikaw lamang sinta

Hanggang ngayon, ikaw parin
Ang hinahanap ng puso’t isipan
Hanggang ngayon walang iba
Sa puso ikaw lamang sinta
Hanggang ngayon...
Hooooo....

'Just One Summer' Movie Details and Cast Description

From the same production company and director of hit romantic movies 'Let The Love Begin' and 'One True Love' comes another love story, starring one of the country's biggest loveteams - Elmo Magalona and Julie Anne San Jose (otherwise known as JuliElmo) - in the movie that will make you fall in love all over again titled "Just One Summer."

Synopsis:

The movie is all about a rich, rebellious boy spends the summer with his father who he has considered long dead and his mistress while waiting for the annulment of his father and his mother's marriage. During his stay with his father during the summer, he meets a poor girl who is his childhood friend and is a scholar of whom her family is depending on however, she is holding in a secret with regards to the true state of her scholarship. The two meet and comfort each other amidst their problems and they fall for each other as time goes on and as they get to
know each other.

Daniel Cuaresma, Jr is a rich boy fresh from highschool. And he is close to reaching this dream, dahil natanggap siya sa isang med school abroad for college.

His dad has only one condition for Daniel before he signs – he wants his son to spend summer with him. Simple lang kung tutuusin. But not for Daniel. He hates his dad. He has hated him eversince he left their family and went back to the province to take care of his farm. Kaya naman spending time with his dad, during his last summer in the country, is the last thing on his mind.

Unlike Nyel, her family doesn’t have all the finances dahil hindi naman sila mayaman.

Pero habang tumatagal, mahihirapan si Beto dahil masama ang ugali ni Nyel—not because he is really bad, but because he’s acting up, dahil nga galit siya sa ama.

But somewhere along the way, magbabago ang lahat.

With everything that’s going on, will this summer still have a happy ending? This is the story of a wounded, teenage boy forced to spend time with the father he so hates…

A father who wants to reconnect with a son who has shut him out of his life…

And a clueless, provincial lass who will make it all a bit easier simply by being inlove and by being loved by the boy…

Their lives changed in...Just One Summer.

Character Description:

Daniel Cuaresma Jr. or Dani/Nyel (Elmo Magalona) - Rich and rebellious. Unhappy, but covers it up by keeping up a cool front. Galing probinsya pero sa Manila na nagbinata. Only child, kaya may pagka-spoiled. Minor but he smokes behind parent’s back, drinks with friends, and had been with a lot of girls. Tanggap na sa isang college abroad, making this summer his last one in the country. Has to endure this summer with his dad, dahil ito ang requirement para pumirma ito sa parental consent na kelangan ng school niya. Called Dan by his manila friends, called Nyel by the province people

Beto (Julie Anne San Jose) - A simple, provincial lass who recently graduated from high school. - matalino, mabait, ,matulungin… basically a good and obedient daughter. - only daughter, raised by her strict but loving dad and her cool lola. May pagka-idealistic when it comes to love. Her summers are usually spent helping her father at the farm, and spending time teaching/playing for children at the church choir. Her usual summer is changed when her long-time crush, Nyel, comes home again ater a long time. Achiever naman, pero minsan, pakiramdam niya she is pressured to measure up to her dead mom.

Daniel Cuaresma Jr. (Joel Torre) - Dad of Daniel, Jr (Nyel) and owner of the DC farms - a fair and generous boss; loved, respected and highly regarded by the farm people because he loves and cares for them sincerely as well.

Ganunpaman, she loves her son so much even if she’s not touchy or ver vocal about it. Hindi rin niya alam that this summer would change the way she had always looked at her separation with Daniel.

Hangga’t maari at hangga’t kaya niya, tutulungan niya sina Nyel at Dan na magkaayos, but she can only do so much dahil hindi naman siya totoong parte ng pamilya.

Berting (Buboy Garovillo) - Single dad to Beto.

Honey Boo Boo Child Hates Justin Bieber

Six-year-old pageant star Alana Thompson (Honey Boo Boo Child) and her family (mom June, dad Sugar Bear, 12-year-old sister Lauryn "Pumpkin," 15-year-old sister Jessica "Chubbs," and 17-year-old pregnant sister Anna "Chickadee") debut on Wednesday in their very own TLC series titled "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo".

Like other kids her age, she likes Sponge Bob.

"When I grow up I want to be nurse, a doctor, a momma, a teacher, I want to go college, I want to be a hair-styler," she told Access, and then added to her list of possible careers. "I want to work Wal-Mart, I want to work at McDonalds - so I can eat all the chicken nuggets and I want to work at Chick-fil A... I got 10 things to do, 10 jobs!" she also said.

Ann Curry Revealed Why She Was Fired by NBC

"Today" former host Ann Curry, who got fired from the show back in July revealed in the August issue of Ladies’ Home Journal the reason for her unexpected shocking exit from the show.

Ann Curry claimed:

One day I wore a multicolored dress and someone asked if I was trying to be Toucan Sam. But I chose it because I thought, This will perk up America. I’m encouraged by my bosses to wear these ridiculously high-heeled shoes because women say, ‘I love your shoes!’ So if it makes women happy, I’ll wear them. But I’m still going to be me… I’ve tried to wear clogs and flats on TV and it hasn’t gone well with my bosses.

I’ve decided not to buy into the idea that I want to stop aging. My wrinkles connect me to my family, to my ancestors and to my future. This is how my father looked when he was my age. I’ve got cellulite because it runs in my family. I’ve got gray hair because I won’t dye it.

It’s a shame. These days it seems networks are more inclined to hire women who look like beauty queens than women who report like Barbara Walters. A pair of cute flats and few gray hairs are what I consider 'sensible chic."

'Be Careful with My Heart' Secret for Success Shared by Direk Jeffrey Jeturian

'Be Careful with My Heart' Secret for Success Shared by Direk Jeffrey Jeturian

Top-caliber movie and television director Jeffrey Jeturian shares the key factors for the overwhelming success of the country’s most-watched daytime program and ABS-CBN’s first-ever TV drama series shot on high definition camera, “Be Careful With My Heart.”

Q: Anong masasabi mo sa natatanging ratings success ng “Be Careful With My Heart?” Inasahan n’yo ba ‘yung mangyari?

JJ: The consistent high ratings of the show is really overwhelming. We did not expect that there is a morning audience that big that would propel “Be Careful With My Heart” everyday to the 5th spot of the top overall TV programs nationwide.

JJ: “Be Careful With My Heart” is the first soap of ABS-CBN that is shot on HD or high-definition camera. That explains the glossy look of the show when people watch it onscreen, plus we shoot the series film-style so it has the feel, look, and ‘magic’ of a movie.

JJ: The success of the show can be attributed to a lot of things. First, the soap is effective as a romance comedy. There’s chemistry between Jodi as Maya and Richard as Richard. Jodi is effective as the naive and pure-hearted nanny to the deaf kid of the stern and stone-hearted widower played by Richard. The followers of the soap is looking forward to the day when Maya will be able to melt Richard’s heart .

Second, the story’s simplicity and feel-good tone was able to capture the audience’s fancy. The show doesn’t only leave one feeling romantic everytime, but also with a smile in the heart each time.

Direk Jeffrey co-directs the Jodi Sta. Maria and Richard Yap-starrer with Direk Mervyn Brondial.

“Be Careful With My Heart” airs weekday right before “It's Showtime” on ABS-CBN.

Protege Top Finalists 20 Help Flood Victims

The Top 20 proteges of GMA’s artista search Protege: The Battle for the Big Artista Break took time outside of their reclusive quarters to receive pledges of financial and material aid intended for residents displaced when several municipalities in Mega Manila and Luzon were inundated as a result of torrential rains in this northern Philippine region.

Astig!,” shared Mykel Ong, a protege from Batangas. Not all calls that they received were from donors, though. Some calls were from victims and relatives of victims either asking for immediate rescue or relief goods.

Meanwhile, Mindanao protege David John Llanas empathizes with the victims of the flood. He and his family went through the same ordeal when typhoon Sendong hit and inundated Cagayan de Oro City just recently.

Another protege representing Mindanao, Ruru Madrid, whose family currently lives in the flood prone Marikina City in Metro Manila is not only worried about the welfare of the victims but also of his own family.

Ruru learned last night that his family is safe since their home is located on an elevated portion of the city. Beginning tomorrow, the proteges will be preparing for their first performance night this Sunday during the show’s live gala. This is their second gala night since their presentation to the public last Sunday, August 5.

The gala night will be aired live on Sunday, 8:30pm on GMA-7 and will be hosted by Dingdong Dantes and Carla Abellana.

Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams ‘Trouble with the Curve’ Movie Trailer

Warner Bros. Has just released the first trailer of its upcoming sports film, “Trouble With The Curve” which stars Clint Eastwood as an aging baseball scout with a failing eye sight who takes his daughter (Amy Adams) with him on a trip to check out a hot prospect.

In the film, Gus Lobel (Eastwood) is an aging baseball scout for the major league team, the Atlanta Braves. Long since widowed and living alone, Gus has embarked on a recruiting trip - maybe his last, considering his age and the changing business - to find a talented young player. He’s joined by his daughter Mickey (Adams), a busy corporate lawyer. The two have maintained a mostly episodic and often strained relationship in the past, which secrets and lies have not helped to mend. As they reconnect and attempt to work out their personal issues, they cross paths and fates with Johnny (Justin Timberlake), an upcoming rival scout, in a season that will be deeply cathartic for all of them.

Opening across the Philippines this September, “Trouble With The Curve” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Sneak Peek: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga's Haunted House Movie ‘The Conjuring’

Before there was Amityville, there was Harrisville.

Based on a true story, New Line Cinema’s “The Conjuring” tells the horrifying tale of how world renowned paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga) were called upon to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in a secluded farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful demonic entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.

From New Line Cinema comes a feature film drawn from the case files of married demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. “The Conjuring” stars Academy Award® nominee Vera Farmiga (“Orphan”), Patrick Wilson (“Prometheus”), Ron Livingston (HBO’s “Band of Brothers”) and Lili Taylor (“Public Enemies”), under the direction of James Wan (“Saw,” “Insidious”).

Joey King (“Crazy, Stupid, Love.”), Shanley Caswell (“Detention”), Haley McFarland (TV’s “Lie to Me”), Mackenzie Foy (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”) and newcomer Kyla Deaver play the family’s five daughters, and Sterling Jerins (upcoming “World War Z”) is the Warrens’ little girl, Judy.

Wan directs from a script by brothers Chad & Carey W. Hayes (“The Reaping”). The film is produced by Peter Safran, Tony DeRosa-Grund and Rob Cowan, with Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter serving as executive producers.

Wan reunites behind the scenes with members of his “Insidious” creative team: director of photography John Leonetti, editor Kirk Morri and costume designer Kristin M. Burke, and his “Saw” production designer, Julie Berghoff.

“The Conjuring” is a New Line Cinema production and will be distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Lopez claims her driver demanded $2.8 million or he’d expose her much-kept secret.

TMZ reports:

Jennifer Lopez has sued her former driver for extortion, claiming he demanded $2.8 million or else he’d tell the media and authorities about secrets he overheard while driving her here and there.

Jennifer’s case is a countersuit to a claim filed by Hakob Manoukian, who claimed he was forced to resign after being publicly berated by JLo’s manager, Benny Medina.

In her countersuit, obtained by TMZ, Lopez alleges Manoukian became drunk with power and wanted to control her entire security team and get more money for doing it. When he was shut down, Jennifer claims he retaliated by threatening to spill confidential information that would be highly embarrassing.

The country’s biggest musical event of the year, “The X Factor Philippines,” won in national TV ratings over rival network’s newly launched talent-reality shows during the weekend making it the most-watched talent show in the land.

Based on recent urban and rural TV ratings data from Kantar Media, “The X Factor Philippines” scored an average national TV rating of 20.7% last Saturday (August 4) vs TV5’s Artista Academy” only rated at 1.8%. GMA 7’s bet “Protégé: The Battle for the Big Artista Break” also fell short on its viewership and wasn’t able to beat “The X Factor Philippines” (16.6%) during its launch last Sunday (August 5). More Filipinos are definitely glued to the intense competition being served by the hit Kapamilya show especiall after judge-mentor Charice bid goodbye to her first act. Jerrianne Templo, a dive guide from Mandaluyong City, got booted from the competition after judge-mentors Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, and Pilita Corrales favored to save Over 25s Joan Da, who is also at the bottom two together with Jerrianne.

Zach Galifianakis, The Oddball Candidate in “The Campaign”

Zach Galifianakis, The Oddball Candidate in “The Campaign”

“Hangover” alumnus Zach Galifianakis plays Marty Huggins, the unlikely challenger to Will Ferrell's incumbent Congressman Cam Brady in Warner Bros.' new election-themed comedy “The Campaign.”

In the film, as Cam Brady brazens through an embarrasing sex scandal with his usual flair, the seasoned politico prepares to segue unopposed into his fifth term in office. But this time, to his astonishment, a challenger appears out of nowhere: local tour operator Marty Huggins - a dumpy, soft-spoken, cardigan-wrapped, fanny-pack-wearing oddball with zero political experience.

As Election Day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other. It’s a mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because, even if you believe campaign ethics have hit rock bottom…there’s still room to dig a whole lot deeper.

Marty is a bit of a simpleton,” says Galifianakis. “He runs a tourist office in a town that gets maybe four visitors a year. But he’s very happy with his life, and he’s proud of his town. He’s a little weird, too, in ways that are probably better left unexamined, but you sense that he has a good heart.

Marty may have started out with some good intentions but soon adapts to reveal a talent for treachery that just needed some focus - which his backers are happy to provide. “I’ve followed politics all my life and I’m still amazed by the amount of puppeteering that goes on behind the scenes in the making of a politician, and how the public can be duped by that,” says Galifianakis. “We’re just showing, in a fun and funny way, how the sausage is made.

Director Jay Roach agrees that “Marty is a little off-center. He loves his community, his pugs, and then his wife and kids, probably in that order. What immediately sets him apart from Cam, besides his total lack of polish, is that he genuinely cares. For reasons that have nothing to do with his qualifications, he is suddenly tapped to run for Congress and, because he really wants to make a difference, he accepts. But he clearly has no idea what that involves and, seeing that, you kind of start rooting for him to figure it out and make the most of this great, unexpected opportunity.”

You see what’s going on in the political arena now, watch the election ads, listen to the rhetoric, and it’s a wonder that we could even keep up,” says Galifianakis.

Timed to open as the 2012 American election race is powering into the home stretch, “The Campaign” casts a vote for comedy. “By the time it’s released, I imagine the 2012 campaigns will have amplified and accelerated in very interesting ways,” Roach predicts. “People will either be on the edge of their seats over what’s going to happen next, or more than a little burnt out, and looking for something that lets them laugh about it.

Opening across the Philippines on August 29, “The Campaign” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Jessica Biel Fights for the Resistance in “Total Recall”

Jessica Biel Fights for the Resistance in “Total Recall”

While not an out-and-out adrenalin junkie, Jessica Biel likes a little action in her life. Alongside comedy pieces like “Valentine's Day” and “New Year's Eve,” Biel’s filmography is peppered with physical roles, from the remake of “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” through “Blade: Trinity” to her recent outing in “The A-Team.” And now she’s at it again with a physically enervating role in “Total Recall,” a high-intensity, futuristic action-thriller.

It’s rare being a woman to be able to use your body in the way that we can use our body in these kinds of film,” says Biel. “I don’t do that kind of thing on an everyday basis but I find it really fulfilling to work like that on screen. It’s amazing; you get to learn so much, about different martial arts, or boxing or whatever it is, which is great.

Biel’s latest role is that of a Resistance fighter called Melina in a reboot of “Total Recall.” The new film is drawn from the Philip K. Dick short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”, which also inspired the 1990 “Total Recall” movie, shot by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the leading role; Rachel Ticotin, meanwhile, played the Melina character.

In our movie, Melina’s profession is a bit different,” says Biel, “but then the tone is so different that it is actually quite difficult to compare any of these characters in the two movies. She is really a reinvention of the original character that Rachel had created. She is still a warrior and still a survivor and she is quite ballsy, I guess. In the original she didn’t take any crap from Arnold and I don’t think this character takes any crap either!

The character in this movie plays an integral role in the journey of the main hero, Quaid (Colin Farrell), a seemingly normal guy who’s living an existence that is not quite his own. Len Wiseman, who helmed “Underworld,” “Underworld Evolution” and “Live Free or Die Hard,” directs.

When I heard about Total Recall and read the script it sounded really fun and also very different from the first movie,” explains Biel. “At the time that the first movie was made it was such a feat of computer-generated imagery; it was amazing cutting-edge CGI. Now, to look back at it, it doesn’t necessarily hold up in that way, but the tone and the fun of it is still there.”

Biel says that she and Farrell would on occasion watch scenes from the original. “Sometimes Colin and I would wonder whether we should be making something that’s more fun and light-hearted like that movie, but then I know that we definitely made the right choice [in going a little darker].

Len Wiseman made the right choice by really rebooting the idea, and not trying to copy the first movie with the same tone,” continues the actress, “because that really was a moment, that film at that time, and I don’t think you want to mess with it. It was perfect the way that it was. Our film feels very different and very cool.”

While the film offers an essentially dystopian vision of the future, Biel says that some of the futuristic gadgets are mind-bogglingly fun. “I figure I wouldn’t mind a hover car,” she says of the film’s primary form of transport. “There’s also a really cool gun that Colin uses and when it fires all these crazy legs come out, and you can wrap people up!

She says that were she, like Quaid in the movie, to enter Rekall for a memory implant, she might opt for the life of a CIA operative. “I’ve always been fascinated by detectives and secret agents,” she says, “so maybe I would work on something like a murder unit.”

Biel laughs. “I know that sounds a little bit morbid, but I’m one of those people that is obsessed with [the TV show] 48 Hours. I love that kind of stuff. I’m interested in crime and why people do what they do.”

Hence she loves the intrigue and intricate plotting that ripples through Total Recall. The actress says that she feels as though her character is “the heart of the film.” She adds, “And for Quaid she is that one constant. From the second that he meets her, she’s just truthful and she continues to tell him the truth, even when he doesn’t believe her.”

Quaid starts to question his identity as his story unfolds, realising that his world and his very existence are under siege. He becomes a wanted man, seemingly with no friends. Only the mysterious Melina offers a genuine helping hand.

It is interesting,” Biel adds. “In many ways Melina represents truth and intuition, that little feeling that you have when you meet somebody and you are like, ‘I don’t know why, but I just know you. l feel like I’ve known you for a long time.’ That little voice that’s hard to listen to. The brain is very, very clever and manipulative, and can twist on you, but that intuition that’s there is always the truth, if you can hear it. If you can actually listen.”
