'Madaling Araw Mahabang Gabi' Full Trailer Starring Angelica Panganiban, Callum David, Glaiza de Castro, Rocco Nacino

Panoramanila Pictures presents a movie about the entangled stories of a group of young people who happen to be in a bar in Puerto Princessa, Palawan on the eve of All Souls' Day. As midnight approaches, we become complicit as each of them takes the challenge of the Pangangaluluwa, a seemingly innocent Palawan tradition of honoring the dead by stealing something from the living. A young guitarist battles with crabs; an Indian guy gets caught in a crossfire; a hot cougar meets her match; Cosplayers battle for road supremacy; a religious woman finds true faith in a strange kiss; and a bartender prepares a drink that results in the most bitter of brews. The movie holds up a mirror to this dark night and bear witness to the inevitable consequences that mark the choices of the young.

Titled #MadalingArawMahabangGabi, the movie stars a complete cast of hottest and famous names in showbiz, music and fashion industries today - Angelica Panganiban, Kean Cipriano, Glaiza de Castro, Edgar Allan Guzman, Buboy Garovillo, Tutti Caringal, Karel Marquez, Rocco Nacino, Alchris Galura, Jeffrey Hidalgo, Callum David, Dominic Roco, Lou Veloso and Ms. Cherie Gil.

Written and directed by Dante Nico Garcia, #MadalingArawMahabangGabi opens in theaters this September 2012.

Sam Concepcion and Tippy Dos Santos Share First Big Screen Kiss in ‘IDoBidoo Bidoo’

Teen heartthrob Sam Concepcion admits that Unitel’s comedy-musical IDoBidoo Bidoo is his biggest career break, and he is ultimately grateful that he has the promising Tippy Dos Santos as his leading lady.

The movie, which features the iconic songs of the Apo Hiking Society, is topbilled by the entertainment industry’s most respectable names Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Ogie Alcasid, and Eugene Domingo and is directed by box-office director Chris Martinez.

Tippy and I have been friends since way back. We represented the country in a festival in Korea when we were kids, and last year, we were first paired in Peter Pan. I was Peter to her Wendy,” recounts Sam. “This is such a big break and I am thankful that I have Tippy by my side to support me.”

In the movie, Sam plays Rock Polotan, who has impregnated his girlfriend Tracy Fuentebella (Tippy). Conflict starts when their families come into the picture- the affluent Fuentebella Family (Zsa Zsa and Gary) and the poor yet musically-inclined Polotan Family (Ogie and Eugene).

IDoBidoo Bidoo marks Sam’s crossover to doing more challenging and mature roles, as he was required to do his first onscreen kiss in the movie.

Being in the business for so long, I know some people’s perception of me is that I’m still 12 or 13, but thankfully, I was blessed with this movie that I get to make people realize that I am already a grown-up,” shares the teen heartthrob. “Working with Tippy has always been a breeze. We have this rapport that comes from years of friendship.”

Asked about the kiss, Sam says “when we did the scene, I was already Rock who is madly in love with Tracy. So, it was ok. The more memorable parts are the minutes before and after the take.”

Tippy adds, “this is my first movie, so the kissing scene made me really nervous, but because it is Sam, with direk Chris as our director, everything turned out well and romantic.”

Tippy was a seasoned, yet young theater actress before showbiz discovered her. She has appeared in TV shows like Idol, Shoutout, Growing Up, among others.

Sam and Tippy are grateful that Tony Gloria and Unitel Pictures entrusted this project to them.

Unitel brought numerous cinematic gems like Crying Ladies, La Visa Loca, and the songs of APO mirror the history of the Filipino people, until now, we can’t believe that we were tapped to be a part of this landmark movie,” gushes Sam. “This is a movie that every Filipino family should watch.

IDo Bidoo Bidoo starts showing this August 29 in cinemas nationwide.

Regine Velasquez as Host of GMA-7’s H.O.T. TV: "I won't play safe but i'll be just appropriate."

Regine Velasquez as Host of GMA-7’s H.O.T. TV: "I won't play safe but i'll be just appropriate."

Regine Velasquez was given the title “Asia’s Songbird” because of her very powerful voice. Her every belting surely elicits proper ovation from the audience, and her songs have become the eternal favorites of contenders in all kinds of singing contests ranging from amateur to professional. She has also tried a hand on acting and has starred in several blockbuster romance-comedy movies and in high-rating TV shows.

Beginning August 5, however, Regine will be donning a new tunic – that of a showbiz talk show host with the launch of GMA’s H.O.T. TV (Hindi Ordinaryong Tsimis TV). She will be joined by co-hosts Raymond Gutierrez, Jennylyn Mercado and her long-time friend, veteran comedian Roderick Paulate in the said show, which will replace the all-showbiz talk show Showbiz Central.

Unlike its predecessor, H.O.T. TV won’t go all-showbiz; it will also feature human interest stories and extraordinary feats of ordinary people. Each host will be assigned a particular type of story each week.

During the press conference of the show, Regine jokingly described herself as “intrigera” although she said that as much as possible she doesn’t want to “grill” fellow artists about sensitive and too-personal topics.

Siguro kung may mga kaibigan akong artista na hindi masyadong mahilig magpainterview, siguro sa akin nila ibibigay thinking na ‘Oh, I will be safe kasi hindi naman siya [Regine] intrigera’ pero mali pala sila (laughs),” she quipped.

Regine understands that her being a showbiz personality herself places her in an uncomfortable position to do hard-core “intriga.”

It’s a showbiz talk show, of course, and I know that I am expected to ask intriguing questions but as an actor and as a person who is in the same business [showbiz], I don’t think it’s proper na mamersonal ako nang ganun, although I will try my very best to ask questions na yung makahulugan naman at makabuluhan naman, yung hindi sila ma-ooffend but at the same giving them a chance also to clear whatever issue they need to clear, yun lang naman,” she said.

Regine, however, made it clear that she won’t play safe in dealing with showbiz-related stories; she’ll be just “appropriate.”

Hindi naman sa magpapaka-safe ako pero siguro dun lang ako sa kung ano ang appropriate kasi maliit lang naman ang industriya at kilala ko silang lahat, wala namang may gusto nang may maraming kaaway,” she said.

The songbird will be staging a concert entitled “Silver” on November 16 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena to celebrate her 25th year in the industry.

Actually 26th year ko na ito pero hindi ko kasi na-celebrate last year yung 25th ko bilang nabuntis ako,” explains Regine.

Almost all throughout her pregnancy, Regine rarely appeared on television. Just a few months after giving birth, she is now back and ready for work. Does she and husband Ogie Alcasid plan of having another baby soon?

Kung bibigyan pa kami ng isang baby, then we will be very happy.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs marks the 25th anniversary of “TV Patrol” with a special documentary that highlights its vibrant history and evolution and confronts the controversial issues the country’s number one television newscast has had to face.

Titled “Mga Nagbabagang Balita: 25 Taon ng TV Patrol,” the documentary will revisit the newscast’s creation and the memorable stories that defined the program and helped shape Philippine contemporary history to be shown on Sunday (July 29) on ABS-CBN.

Speaking for the documentary, ABS-CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III shared how the pioneering news program made a difference on TV news broadcasting and how it became a daily viewing habit by millions of Filipinos in the country. He said it posted “unusually” high ratings compared to any program shown after its timeslot when it was launched.

Originally, the common thinking was, it was the primetime entertainment programs that generated the most significant revenues. In the case of ‘TV Patrol,’ it was the highest rating and highest grossing program in its early years,” said Lopez.

And years since, it has remained as the country’s undisputed, number one newscast in the country. “TV Patrol” is still the most-watched newscast with a national TV rating of 31.8%, or almost twice higher than rival “24 Oras” with 17.6%, based on the June 2012 data from Kantar Media.

Ging Reyes, head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, also stressed how the newscast has become part of Filipino’s everyday lives and Pinoy pop culture. “People are afraid to be reported on TV doing unlawful activities. ‘O, baka ma-TV Patrol ka.’ ‘Naku, ayokong ma-TV Patrol!’ That’s the biggest mark it has left on us as a nation,” she said.

Being a part of the program has also compelled Noli ‘Kabayan’ de Castro, who anchors “TV Patrol” with Korina Sanchez and Ted Failon, to go out in the field and look for his own stories instead of just reporting them from the studio.

I don’t want to be called a news reader. I am a newscaster. I want to know what’s happening and I know when something is important enough to share with the viewers. I get to know what people want. That’s what happens in ‘TV Patrol,’” he said.

The documentary will also revisit some of the biggest news stories the past 25 years such as the 1990 earthquake, Mt. Pinatubo eruption, coup attempts, etc.

“Mga Nagbabagang Balita: 25 Taon ng TV Patrol” is part of TV Patrol’s silver anniversary celebration, which also included the “TV Patrol Grand Reunion,” “TV Patrol Balitandaan,” and a fund-raising venture called “Beinte Singko Para sa Kabayan Ko.”

Don’t miss “ Mga Nagbabagang Balita: 25 Taon ng TV Patrol” this Sunday, July 29, after “Gandang Gabi Vice” on ABS-CBN Sunday’s Best.

GMA-7 Station ID 2012 Photo Featuring Marian Rivera Released

GMA-7 Station ID 2012 Photo Featuring Marian Rivera Released

GMA’s Primetime Queen Marian Rivera was caught last week by her fans dancing with a group of senior citizens in front of the Veterans’ Memorial Medical Center in Quezon City.

Many netizens have speculated that it was a shoot for a new show but only a few got it right - the shoot was actually for GMA’s upcoming station ID, which will air this August.

Prior to the shoot, Marian had a quick practice with a dance instructor who was amazed at how quickly the beautiful actress memorized the steps.

Despite the drizzle, Marian along with fellow kapuso leading ladies Kris Bernal, Sarah Lahbati and Louise delos Reyes, had a great time shooting with the seniors, some of whom enjoyed the privilege of being the gorgeous ladies’ dance partners. Marian also introduced her version of the Cha-Cha, which was more similar to her popular “Sabay Sabay Tayo” dance step.

Marian has all the reason to dance. Many of her popular kapuso shows have been (or are currently being) aired in various countries abroad, specifically in countries like China, Cambodia, Ghana, Malaysia and Singapore.

Siyempre, nakakataba ng puso na sa bawat soap na ginagawa mo ay hindi lang yan napapanood dito sa atin kundi maging sa ibang bansa, ibang saya ang nadudulot nun e,” she says of her shows’ international presence.

Marian shared that she happened to watch her fantasy series Diyesebel in Cambodia when she visited the country over a year ago.

It seems that the shows in which she starred with her real-life boyfriend Dingdong Dantes appeal to international audiences, is there a plan for another Dingdong-Marian team-up anytime soon?

With Dong [Dingdong Dantes] mukhang wala pa kasi katatapos lang din naman ng My Beloved, siyempre hindi naman kailangan palagi kaming magkasama. Siguro this time, kanya-kanya muna kaming soap.”

Marian currently stars in the sitcom “Tweets for My Sweet,” which airs every Saturday evening on GMA-7. Since its launch in May, the show has been garnering favorable ratings nationwide. It is for this reason that the kapuso primetime queen is thankful to her fans.

Sa lahat ng mga nagmamahal at tumatangkilik sa lahat ng shows ng GMA, maraming maraming salamat po sa inyo, mga Kapuso!,” says Marian.

Acting Royalty Emma Thompson Plays Queen Elinor in “Brave”

Acting Royalty Emma Thompson Plays Queen Elinor in “Brave”

Two-time Oscar-winner Emma Thompson provides the voice of Elinor, the Scottish Queen who has her own plan in mind for her daughter Merida - a plan that’s been predestined since long before either of them was born, in Disney/Pixar's new 3D animated feature, “Brave.”

A vision of grace, wisdom and strength of character, Queen Elinor is fiercely dedicated to the well-being of her family and kingdom. As the measured, diplomatic counterpoint to her more impulsive husband, King Fergus, Elinor carries the weight of the kingdom on her shoulders in order to maintain the fragile peace between the volatile clans. Elinor strives to instill in Merida the knowledge and manner of a royal, expecting complete commitment to Elinor’s standards. But her vision of her daughter’s future is at odds with Merida’s rebellious spirit and desire to forge her own path, which ultimately causes Elinor to face calamitous consequences.

Elinor is beautiful, but under a great deal of pressure,” says production designer Steve Pilcher, “which is tough to showcase visually. We added a shock of white hair that really shows her backstory - this woman has suffered some stress in her life, her daughter’s rebellion is likely just the tip of the iceberg. That unspoken history and bit of imperfection makes Elinor more interesting.

According to Pilcher, the design team studied paintings of Lady Macbeth, among other tragic heroines, incorporating the heavy robes and thick fabrics they observed to illustrate the weight Elinor bears. Emma Thompson says it’s that attention to detail and intense research that makes Pixar successful. “I was terribly pleased to be asked to come and work for Pixar, because their films are works of genius and extraordinary art,” she says. “And the thing that really made me want to do ‘Brave’ even more than my worship of their work is that it was set in Scotland. I’m half Scottish, and I live there for three or four months of the year. Scotland to me is the land of the free, the land of the brave. The Scottish landscape is epic and lends itself to epic emotion.

Scotland is really a character in the film,” Thompson continues. “The filmmakers didn’t just look it up in a book. They went off and spent all this time in Scotland looking at different landscapes, addressing the landscape with the story. There’s a real connection with the countryside - they loved it as everyone does because it’s the most beautiful country in the world.”

Thompson also had an affinity for her character. “Queen Elinor is a character I like very much because at one time she was quite feisty - Merida’s spirited personality comes not only from her father but from her mother as well - but Elinor has managed to put that stuff she had when she was young in a box and she’s stitched it up nicely. The two of them have to work out which bits of the other they’re okay with containing and becoming.”

Co-director Mark Andrews says Thompson captured the essence of Elinor. “Emma is royalty in the acting world and she knows exactly what Elinor needed to be. She is queenly and regal and noble, but at the same time, she can be bawdy and funny. She can be very serious and theatrical - then crack a joke. That’s exactly who our queen is. Emma gives Elinor just the right amount of emotion, earthiness and humor.

Animators often reference video footage of the actors recording their lines and sometimes incorporate subtle gestures, expressions and mannerisms into the characters’ physical performances. Thompson could see a bit of herself in Elinor. “I love the way they’ve captured my eyebrows in my character. My eyebrows are always in this kind of questioning, slightly worried shape, and they got that just right.”

Thompson concludes, “‘Brave’ is full-hearted, exciting, adventurous and very funny in many places, yet emotionally rooted in reality. The calibrations of the story and the way it moves emotionally is pure Pixar; it’s real and beautiful. It has everything I would want in a story, including just enough magic to make trouble.”

Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International, “Brave” takes aim at Philippine theaters on August 01, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select theaters.

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Launches ‘Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na’ Campaign

ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs recently inked a partnership with government agencies, leading universities, companies, print publications, and non-government organizations to push for citizen empowerment and clean elections through its year-long election campaign, “Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na.”

ABS-CBN president and CEO Eugenio ‘Gabby’ Lopez III and ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs head Ging Reyes were present at the covenant signing held at Hotel Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila Tuesday night, July 24, with top government officials Sixto Brillantes, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) chairperson, and Jose Brillantes, Jr., Department of Foreign Affairs Overseas Absentee Voting Secretariat undersecretary and chairman.

Also expressing support for the campaign were chairpersons from Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and Pulse Asia Inc., which will serve as the network’s election partners, and heads from corporate sponsors Globe Telecom, STI College, Universal Motors Corporation, and MyPhone’s Solid Group, Inc.

“BMPM: Tayo Na” also tapped The Philippine Star, Business World, Manila Bulletin, and Business Mirror as its print partners and Fully Abled Nation, Management Association of the Philippines, YouthVote Philippines, and Alternative Law Groups as its cause partners.

The education sector, meanwhile, was led by La Consolacion College, University of Sto. Tomas, University of the Philippines – National College of Public Administration and Governance, Ateneo School of Government, La Salle Institute of Governance, and the Student Council of the University of the Philippines all pledged to propagate the cause.

Ging Reyes thanked the partners and sponsors for their support in the network’s campaign to ensure honest elections in 2013.

We gather here tonight to recognize the involvement of citizens in the crusade for change. We believe that vigilance is important to eradicate electoral anomalies. However, we also believe that many Filipinos today understand that heroism is contagious and that long-term solutions are more important to solve the country’s problems. Beyond Halalan 2013, beyond elections – this is what ‘Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo: Tayo Na’ is all about,” said Ging.

“Bayan Mo, iPatrol Mo” started out as an election-focused citizen journalism campaign “Boto Mo, iPatrol Mo,” which ABS-CBN launched in 2007 that called on citizens to patrol their votes and push for clean elections by using technology and social media in monitoring irregularities in electoral processes such as voter registration, campaigning, ballot casting and counting.

In 2010, the “BMPM Ako ang Simula” campaign succeeded as individuals became accountable for their own future. This year, “Tayo Na!” aims to be a stronger force for change by empowering people to work together to protect the future of the country.

For most of us, this is “a giant leap for mankind” but not for Regine, who is determined to transform the extra flabs to sexy curves in time for her anniversary concert in November.

Regine says she’s currently on Southbeach diet, which she said, has helped her bring her weight down by 12 lbs.

Although the ideal weight for her height is 115lbs., Regine thinks that she would look “too skinny” if she’d target that weight. Instead, she decided to target 125 lbs.

Now, she’s trying to lose 15lbs. in a month, but she’s taking it easy. She also admits to having a diet “cheat day,” which she said was necessary in order to “fool” her body into thinking that she has not changed her usual diet.

Kasi ang hirap yung you’re trying to burn calories tapos you’re on a diet, ang hirap e, ang hirap pagsabayin.”

Regine is a host of GMA’s new showbiz magazine program H.O.T. TV, which will have its premiere telecast on August 5, replacing “Showbiz Central”. She is joined by Jennylyn Mercado, Raymond Gutierrez and veteran comedian Roderick Paulate. It airs every Sunday after “Together Forever” on GMA-7

Half-Siblings Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks Meet for the First Time in “People Like Us”

Half-Siblings Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks Meet for the First Time in “People Like Us”

DreamWorks Pictures' new drama-comedy “People Like Us” starring Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks promises to make moviegoers connect to the experience of the film in a very real way. Director Alex Kurtzman says, “This is a relatable family drama. It’s a movie that is about an experience that’s specific and yet very universal at the same time.”

“People Like Us” opens on August 15 exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4, Greenbelt 3 and Trinoma).

In the film, Sam (Pine), a twenty-something, fast-talking salesman, finds his latest deal collapsing on the same day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes, Sam is called home, where he must put his father’s estate in order and reconnect with his estranged family. In the course of fulfilling his father’s last wishes, Sam uncovers a startling secret that turns his entire world upside-down: He has a 30-year-old sister Frankie (Banks) whom he never knew about. As their relationship develops, Sam is forced to rethink everything he thought he knew about his family - and re-examine his own life choices in the process.

It’s a movie that’s about all of us. It’s about who we are; it’s about the choices that we make,” Kurtzman continues. “It’s about the mistakes that we make and about the beauty that we find in life, in each other and in our family, no matter how complicated that family is. At the end of the day when all is said and done, nothing is more important than family.”

When writer/director Alex Kurtzman was young, he knew that his father had been married before and had two other children. Separated by distance and 15 years, the other family led their lives and Kurtzman led his. They never met one another. One day, Kurtzman began to think about the other family and from that initial wave of thoughts, the idea for “People Like Us” began to germinate: What if, when he was young, he had actually met his half-brother or sister and never realized it?

In an uncanny and totally serendipitous moment, Kurtzman met his half-sister at a party that very same day. As Kurtzman explains, “I don’t know where the idea came from, but it just sort of struck me and I had no idea how to get there. And I didn’t think much of it. That night, maybe about three hours later, I walked into a party and a woman walked up to me and said, ‘I’m your sister.’

It was sort of like being in a dream,” continues Kurtzman. “We got to know each other, and it was an amazing experience. We got incredibly close and as we did, we started to talk about the different things that we had missed, the time that we had missed together, and I think that the overwhelming feeling that we walked away with was just how grateful we were to finally get to know each other.”

Kurtzman admits that it was “a little bit shocking” for both of them to finally sit down and meet. “It was an amazing thing to me because when you’re looking at someone who in some ways has your features, whom you’ve never met before, and whose genetics are very clear, it’s a little bit like looking in a mirror,” says Kurtzman.

Kurtzman is candid about how he felt making a film on a subject that he has a personal connection to: “The thing that was most important to me, while being true to the experience of my life, was that I wanted to make sure it was a movie that communicated that everybody has reasons for doing what they do.”

“People Like Us” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

May the Best Loser Win in “The Campaign”

May the Best Loser Win in “The Campaign”

The election process in America can sometimes get so wild, you just have to laugh…especially if you’re Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis or admitted political news junkie Jay Roach, director/producer of Warner Bros.' irreverent new comedy “The Campaign.”

Known for “Meet the Parents” and the Austin Powers send-ups, Roach also successfully addressed the American political system from a more serious perspective in HBO’s acclaimed dramas “Recount” and “Game Change,” and has come to believe that sometimes the best way to confront the subject is head-on, with humor.

I think comedy is the correct response to politics these days. At least it gives you something to laugh about and makes the reality of it easier to swallow, whereas if you just watch the news it can be pretty scary,” Roach offers. “Looking at some of today’s election campaigns, I don’t know if this is what our founding fathers had in mind.”

Luckily, Roach was able to exorcise his anxieties in a big way in “The Campaign,” with Ferrell and Galifianakis, who also served as producers on the film, and whom he calls “two of the funniest, smartest guys on Earth. Will and Zach go all the way as rival candidates who have the resources to completely destroy each other by pulling out every form of shady campaign strategy you can imagine, every sleazy video and shameless dirty trick. And it quickly degenerates from there.”

The filmmakers, anticipating an R-rating, knew they’d have free rein to take this story as far as it needed to go, in a way that audiences everywhere could relate to - whether Republican, Democrat, Independent or fill-in-the-blank.

Ferrell, who stars as entrenched incumbent Cam Brady, friend to all and faithful to none, says, “One of the things the story makes fun of is the amount of money that can be poured into elections and how much influence it can have. The district these guys are fighting over is a relatively small one, unimportant on the larger stage, but, for the powers that circle it, it’s vital for their business interests and therefore worth a great deal to them.

Representing the competition, Galifianakis stars as clueless first-time candidate Marty Huggins, who may have started out with some good intentions but soon adapts to reveal a talent for treachery that just needed some focus - which his backers are happy to provide. “I’ve followed politics all my life and I’m still amazed by the amount of puppeteering that goes on behind the scenes in the making of a politician, and how the public can be duped by that,” says Galifianakis. “We’re just showing, in a fun and funny way, how the sausage is made.”

“The Campaign” is an equal-opportunity offender, taking aim not at the politics but the process, and how, for a growing number of campaigns being waged around America, it doesn’t seem to be so much about parties or issues or ideology anymore but about spending, fighting and winning… and spending some more. So why not take that to the next level and see what happens?

As one insult leads to another, both characters eventually lose their minds,” producer Adam McKay says. “They snap. What starts out as typical mud-slinging and crazy accusations turns into a coliseum death match.

Still, screenwriter Shawn Harwell points out, for all the mayhem on screen and improvisational input from the cast, “Jay made sure it all made sense and that we were getting the most emotional payoff for the journey, by telling a complete story and then finding ways to mine the comedy from that, rather than a lot of throwaway gags. And Will and Zach bring a lot of likeability to these characters that I think will make audiences root for them to succeed in their own way.”

Considering the timing of the film’s American debut, Ferrell says, “Releasing it before the next big presidential race might give people some relief from the election season and the fatigue of campaign ads, and bring them some laughs just when they need it most.”

If there’s a message here,” suggests Galifianakis, “It’s that we’re all screwed.

Opening across the Philippines on August 29, “The Campaign” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Greg Heffley's Journals Continues on the Big Screen in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days”

Greg Heffley's Journals Continues on the Big Screen in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days”

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” is the third and latest big screen installment of author Jeff Kinney’s wildly popular series of illustrated novels about wise-cracking but hapless middle school student Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon). As Greg confides to his diary (though, as he likes to point out, “It’s not a diary, it’s a journal!”), middle school is “the dumbest idea ever invented,” a never-ending ordeal involving – among other appalling things – wedgies, bullies, morons and swirlies. And if you don’t know what a swirly is, then lucky you.

Returning with Zachary Gordon for more mayhem in the community are his brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) who’s older but not wiser and his best friend Rowley (Robert Capron) whose wholesome outlook in life makes him the coolest kid around along with Fregley (Grayson Russell), Holly (Peyton List), Patty (Laine MacNeil) and Chirag (Karan Brar).

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” is based on Kinney’s third and fourth Wimpy Kid books, The Last Straw and Dog Days. Kinney, who worked closely with the screenwriters, producers and director, says, “We have an obligation to our readers, to make sure we’re protecting their expectations and don’t stray too far from the books.”

Simpson notes, “Some fans will ask, what happened to the third book, The Last Straw? We incorporated elements of it into“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days”, and we brought other elements into“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days”. For the latter, this enabled us to get outside of the school and do a summer-themed movie. This was a great opportunity to expand Greg’s world. People usually look at summer vacation as a golden time, but for Greg it’s just as tough as the school year. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days is a really fun book that turns summer on its head, and I think we’ve done that in the movie. We also have some new elements that feel like they’re part of Jeff Kinney’s world.”

Indeed, the filmmakers are quick to praise Zachary’s achievements in bringing Greg Heffley to life on screen. “I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role,” says Simpson. “We started out, three years ago, with a stick figure in Jeff’s book, and had many discussions about what that stick figure would look like if it came to life. We decided that it was really about attitude – a little bit of a hustler, a little bit of salesman, and of course, a wimp. Greg is a good kid, but still trying to get ahead the way that kids do. Zach has really nailed this role and I think it’s hard for kids, when they read the books, to imagine anyone but Zach as Greg.

Zachary’s Greg still plays off his friends, including Rowley, and troublemaker older brother Rodrick, but “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” also sees Greg spending more time with his dad, Frank. Jacobson notes: “This movie is about Greg and his father, and we get a much fuller sense of who Frank is as a character and more of an opportunity to enjoy Steve Zahn, who’s played the role in all three pictures. And, while we’ve had the amazing comedic weapon that is Steve in our arsenal all along, it’s great to finally let it loose.” Kinney says, “In the books, the parents are kind of background characters; Greg doesn’t even know what his father does for a living. But Steve has done wonders with the Frank character, and adds humor to everything he does.” Rachael Harris adds, “There are some very laugh-out-loud slapsticky things Steve does that nobody can do better.”

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” opens August 15 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

“Life of Pi” Movie Trailer Released

“Life of Pi” Movie Trailer Released

Based upon the bestselling book by Yann Martel, Life of Pi tells the story of a young man’s incredible survival at sea against impossible odds. A remarkable technological breakthrough in 3D epic adventure, PI is an emotionally captivating experience that will inspire, touch and transport audiences to a place of discovery that they will never forget.

Winner of the pretigious Literary Awards Hugh Maclennan Prize for fiction in 2001 and the Man Booker Prize in 2002, Yann Martel's "Life of Pi" is now a movie adaptation by 20th Century Fox helmed by filmmaker Ang Lee and is starred by newcomer Suraj Sharma as the titular character Pi Patel.

When Pi Patel, a son of a zookeeper turned sixteen, his family emigrate from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship due to the prevalence of political unrest. An extraordinary God-loving boy whose passion for stories is unmatched, has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and practices his native Hinduism along with Christianity and Islam.

When the ship capsized due to a massive storm, Pi finds himself in the company of a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra and a 450-pound Bengal tiger aboard a lifeboat in the middle of the ocean. Finally reaching the shores of the coast of Mexico, the Bengal tiger who goes by the name of Richard Parker flees to the jungle and Pi left on his own is interrogated by the Japanese authorities who refuse to believe his account.

On board the titular character is Suraj Sharma as Pi who debuts in the film. Suraj Sharma, 17, is a student who lives with his mathematician parents in Delhi, India. He has no previous acting experience and was cast following an extensive, months-long search. Over 3000 young men auditioned for the part.

Sharma landed the role of the lead role after a worldwide talent search headed by the film’s director Ang Lee, Academy Award®-winning filmmaker for his work in “Brokeback Mountain.” “Suraj is Pi,” Lee continued. “During his audition, he filled the room with emotion, much of which he conveyed simply through his eyes. His natural ability to believe and stay in the world of the story is a rare treasure.

Lee, whose many other honors include an Oscar nomination for his direction of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” and whose “Sense and Sensibility” was a Best Picture nominee, shot “Life of Pi” in 3D, utilizing groundbreaking techniques to capture the story’s epic scope.

Since Ang Lee came aboard the project at the end of 2008, he has worked to create a singular vision of Martel’s unforgettable tale. The all-audience experiential movie event will take us through a young man’s incredible adventure – at turns thrilling and spiritual; joyous and harrowing; humorous and tragic. Audiences will follow Pi Patel as he travels from an exotic zoo in India on a voyage across the Pacific, where he survives a shipwreck and is cast adrift in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger as his only company. Adrift in an endess expanse of ocean, Pi struggles to survive and train his companion, landing on a magical island that offers the two their only respite on their desperate journey.

Commented Yann Martel: "I'm thrilled that Ang is adapting “Life of Pi” to film. He's a brilliant, versatile director, with a stunning visual sensibility. He can capture the most intimate emotion as well as the most dynamic action. He's the perfect filmmaker to bring Pi’s epic journey to the screen

David Magee (“Finding Neverland”) adapted Martel’s book. Gil Netter (“Marley & Me,” “The Blind Side”) is producing. The director of photography is Claudio Miranda, who collaborated with David Fincher on several films, including “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” Miranda recently shot “Tron: Legacy” in 3D. Avy Kaufman is the casting director.

Commented Ang Lee: “It has been a daunting and exciting process to develop a motion picture that brings Yann Martel’s fascinating, mind-boggling story to the big screen. Casting the sixteen-year old Pi was particularly challenging. We searched throughout India for a young man who had the innocence to capture our attention, the depth of character to break our hearts, and the physicality needed to embody Pi on his journey.

Fox 2000 Pictures president Elizabeth Gabler stated: “It has been an honor and a privilege to work alongside Ang Lee as he and his team brings this amazing film to life. We believe that “Life of Pi,” with its tremendous scope, groundbreaking visuals, and a story that embraces the triumph of the human spirit will be a cinematic event for audiences of all ages, all over the world.

One of the world’s largest producers and distributors of motion pictures, Fox Filmed Entertainment produces, acquires and distributes motion pictures throughout the world. These motion pictures are produced or acquired by the following units of FFE: Twentieth Century Fox, Fox 2000 Pictures, Fox Searchlight Pictures, Fox International, and Twentieth Century Fox Animation.

“Life of Pi” is a Twentieth Century Fox release to be distributed nationwide by Warner Bros. on January 8, 2013.

The Bourne Legacy Director Tony Gilroy Talks About His Manila Experience

The Bourne Legacy Director Tony Gilroy Talks About His Manila Experience

During preproduction, of The Bourne Legacy director Tony Gilroy toured Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in Vietnam, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Manila in the Philippines. Ultimately, Manila’s history as a shooting location won over the team. Major Hollywood features, such as Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July and Brokedown Palace, were shot in the Philippines in the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. “They had a 25-, 30-year run of making movies there,” says Gilroy, “and they have this huge infrastructure that was built up from all the films made about Vietnam.”

The filmmaker called upon Lope V. Juban, Jr., President of Philippine Film Studios, who has worked on most of the films that have come to the Philippines over the past few decades, to give them a tour of Manila. Not only could Juban - who came on as a line producer - offer locations that Gilroy was looking for, but his contacts with government entities would also be vital for a shoot that involved major stunts on city streets. “Juban said, ‘We can talk to the president about that,’ or ‘We can talk to the minister of transportation and the police department about that.’ They’re all people that he knew,” Crowley explains. “I couldn’t have gotten that in Jakarta or in Ho Chi Minh City.

In fact, The Bourne Legacy would be the first Hollywood film in which Manila plays Manila. “The Philippines has played almost any country - Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Panama,” says Juban. “It is only now that we are filming Manila as Manila, which is great for us.”

It was important to the locals to show off the progress the country had made and their big new areas of development. The Philippines also offered the advantage of a mainly English-speaking local crew. English, the legacy of the American presence for 50 years before World War II, is widely spoken in the country.

Filming in Manila began in the San Andres neighborhood, its ramshackle houses and dark alleyways typical of the city’s lower- and middle-class areas. The San Andres neighborhood has grown organically over the years as locals have kept constructing additions to existing buildings. The casual visitor will find many a residential area that resembles a rabbit-warren maze of alleyways that have been cobbled together.

With its tangled web of utility lines and drying laundry overhead, and pleasant cooking smells merging with other odors of the city, the labyrinthine San Andres neighborhood is where Aaron and Marta find a place to hide from their pursuers: this time, the Philippine authorities.

San Andres was also the setting for a stunt in which Aaron played by actor Jeremy Renner to save (Rachel Weiz) Marta from capture after she is cornered by the police, makes a daring slide three stories down a narrow opening between two buildings. Because of very specific requirements, this set, a narrow three-story structure that the filmmakers called “the chasm,” had to be built by Thompson and his team.

The production’s metro Manila locales also included the Ninoy Aquino International Airport; the historic Intramuros district, known for its Spanish colonial architecture; the Manila Yacht Club; the Marikina covered market; and the Metropoint MRT train station in Pasay City. The crew also traveled approximately an hour by plane from Manila to El Nido, located on the stunning Philippine island of Palawan, for scenes that take place amidst the magnificent islands of the South China Sea. The dramatic islands, with their limestone cliffs that emerge directly from the water, are more often associated with the landscapes of Malaysia and Thailand.

For several days the crew also filmed part of a chase at Navotas Fish Port, known as the fishing capital of the Philippines, situated north of the city on Manila Bay. In the evenings, the location is a working fish market - 1,000 feet long and 200 feet wide - that sells more than 100,000 fish every night. Every morning during the shoot, the crew had to scrub, steam and dry the market. Thompson and his team removed hanging tarps, added skylights and supporting posts, and scrubbed the floor to lessen the overpowering fish smell. This also served a practical purpose: to make the location safe for the complex stunt work that was to be performed there.

No Bourne film would be complete without its fair share of action. Still, emphasizes producer Frank Marshall: “Our rules that we have been very consistent with through all the movies is that we don’t have action for action’s sake. We don’t have a formula where every 10 minutes there has to be a fight scene or an action scene. The action has to be driven by the story. That’s what makes this series unique: These characters get into situations that lead to an action scene or a chase scene, but it all has a story point.”

Unit director Dan Bradley traveled to Manila months before shooting began in order to tailor the action sequences to the locations. “When we looked at the locations, he was with us, and then he said, ‘I’m going to stay behind for a week,’” producer Patrick Crowley recalls. “We waited for Dan to just sit and meditate and come up with great ideas. He’s come up with some things that have never been done before.”

Bradley’s biggest task was to choreograph a motorcycle chase that takes place on the crowded streets of Manila, much of it filmed with Renner in the rider’s seat. “When you’re doing something in which there’s somebody on a motorcycle and they’re not wearing a helmet, you have to have the principal actor do that,” says Crowley. “So we had Jeremy very much involved, and Rachel as well.”

Luckily for the production, Renner is an avid motorcyclist. “When I first met Jeremy, we were going to have some practice sessions, and he showed up on one of the fastest motorcycles in the world, which was one of 10 that he owned,” remembers Crowley. “We felt comfortable that we didn’t have to train him. He has the bones of an action hero. When I see him, I see that silent strength of Steve McQueen. When he gets on a motorcycle, then he becomes even more like him.

Renner also put Weisz at ease as they worked with Bradley. “Being on the back of a bike with Jeremy, I felt completely safe,” she says. “He was doing wheelies, skids and slides - those kind of stunts that he’s very good at.”

The filmmakers were also impressed when Weisz displayed a previously unseen side: that of an action star. “She’s a great actress and has shown all this incredible talent playing characters who are typically not action characters,” says Crowley. But Weisz insisted on as much rehearsal on the motorcycle as possible and performed much of the stunt work herself. Laughs the producer: “Your heart still goes into your throat when you see her going 45, 50 miles an hour on the motorcycle with Jeremy.”

Prior to filming in Manila, Bradley’s team spent several weeks rehearsing the motorcycle stunts, while special equipment was brought in, including Bradley’s own “Go Mobile,” a custom-made vehicle upon which several cameras may be mounted. Bradley also recruited several expert motorcyclists, including professional stunt driver Jean-Pierre Goy, arguably one of the best in the world, to double on the most dangerous stunts. All were pleased to have an actual Batman on board for the production, as Goy was the only one able to drive the two-wheeled street machine called the Bat-Pod for scenes in The Dark Knight. Indeed, he returned to his key role for this summer’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Bradley’s team also retrofitted several jeepneys, a minibus that is the most common form of transportation in the Philippines. “The jeepneys were our heritage from World War II,” Juban explains. “When jeeps were left behind by the Americans, the Filipinos made the body longer. From that time on, it has ended up our main public utility vehicle. That’s iconic Manila.

Each painted in a bright, unique style to entice passengers to hop aboard, jeepneys are ubiquitous throughout the country, numbering around 100,000 in Manila alone. The long and narrow vehicle is a cheap and easy form of transportation, ideally shaped for navigating narrow roads that full-size buses cannot. Open windows provide its only form of air conditioning, and its passenger seating consists of two padded benches facing each other in the back, each seating six to 10 people. When the seats are full, additional passengers ride outside, hanging onto the back as best they can.

Jeepneys are featured in a key chase sequence with Renner, Weisz and Changchien that was filmed on one of Manila’s major roadways, Ramon Magsaysay Boulevard, the main route to the presidential palace. Approximately 90 cars and more than 300 extras were used for the sequence, which shot on a mile and a half stretch of Magsaysay Blvd. through three major intersections over several weekends. Helping manage the shoot were local authorities including the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Manila Traffic Bureau and the Presidential Security Group.

Just on the MMDA, there were about 120 guys working with us - not just in the area, but in the peripheral surroundings to control and help ease the traffic,” Juban recounts. “The Manila police have a contingent of about 50, and the Presidential Security Group has about 20, and then there is the local barangay [district] police.”

A densely populated city of more than 11 million people, Manila was not the easiest place to shoot. “Manila’s a tough city to work in: There are traffic jams, and it’s hard to move around,” ends Crowley. “But the people are so gracious and excited about films. They know more about the Bourne movies than I know about the Bourne movies.”

“The Bourne Legacy” is released and distributed by United International Pictures through Solar Entertainment Corp. Showing on August 8, 2012 nationwide.

ANC’s Newest Daily Program ‘On the Money’ Gives Tips on Saving and Investing

ANC, the country’s most trusted news channel, is empowering Filipinos to become better managers of their personal finances with its newest daily program “On The Money.”

Premiering on Monday, July 30, at 3:30 p.m., “On The Money” will be packed with segments that explain saving and investment concepts, demystify money myths and simple, easy-to-use tips and tricks on how viewers can get more bang for their buck. Every episode will also feature the best and most credible finance experts, professional money managers and life coaches in the country, who will sit in to provide advice and answer viewer questions.

“On The Money” will air from Mondays to Fridays at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and will be anchored by entrepreneur and marketing guru Edric Mendoza, financial planner and former business reporter and columnist Salve Duplito, and broadcast journalist Melissa Gecolea.

Edric, the program’s main anchor, is passionate about teaching people the responsibility of spending on the right things and busting bad shopping habits. An advocate of homeschooling, Edric said he feels very excited to do his first TV show because it is in line with his passion for transforming families.

I’m thrilled about this show because of what it can do for its viewers. If Filipinos manage their money properly, we will have better fathers, better mothers, and even better children,” said Edric, who is also a marketing lecturer and has ten years of corporate experience across research, project development, sales, and brand management in several multinational companies in the country.

He also believes the key to financial well-being is disposing of what he calls the entitlement mentality, which he said makes people believe they deserve to get things they cannot afford. Edric revealed that he was once a victim of – but has since recovered from – such mindset, which got him into debt and almost made him bankrupt.

We are in a culture and environment where wherever we go, everything says ‘buy me.’ We need to have a mindset change because a large part of why people have money problems is their idea of entitlement that makes them think they owe it to themselves to buy things,” Edric said.

“On The Money,” meanwhile, will also bank on Salve’s years of experience as a multi-awarded business journalist, personal finance advocate, and financial planner through her segment Salve Says,” in which she will be busting money myths, teaching finance basics, and guide viewers through and out of their financial mess.

There is a great need for financial literacy in this country, but people don’t want to hear these lessons from someone who is going to peddle a product or a technical guy who says ‘one fourth of one percent.’ My job is to translate these concepts into real doable actions, and tell the story of those who have blundered and those who have succeeded, so that ordinary people will know what to do with their finances,” she said.

Salve, a former business reporter who ran a successful personal finance column in a major broadsheet, wants to teach Filipinos where to put their money, to live below their means, and to spot and avoid scams.

We need a culture of revolution that will make people who are thrifty, cool,” she added.

“On The Money” will also serve as a TV homecoming to Melissa, a former TV reporter and news anchor, who will facilitate the show’s social media segment by monitoring questions and comments from viewers via Facebook and Twitter and field them to the program’s resource persons.

The Philippines needs this show. We live in a culture that does not know how to save and we need to be taught. Our stock market is doing great, we have the strongest performing currency in Asia right now. What could be better than now to start a personal finance show? We needed this a long time ago, so better late than never,” said Melissa, who also serves as executive producer at ANC.

Make the best finance decisions in your life by watching Edric, Salve, and Melissa in “On the Money” at 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., weekdays on ANC (SkyCable Channel 27). For updates on the program, follow @ANCALERTS on Twitter, like ANC 24/7 on Facebook, and log onto ANCnews.TV.
