History and Fiction Fused Together in ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’

History and Fiction Fused Together in ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’

The untold story that shaped America’s nation based on Seth Grahame-Smith’s “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” literary fusion of history and fiction will soon be seen onscreen come July 4 in 3D and 2D cinemas nationwide.

A non-stop mad search for both the hunted and the hunter, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” stars Benjamin Walker who plays the titular role of Abe Lincoln resurrected onscreen as a vampire hunting politico who later became one of the world’s most influential president.

Adapted for movie by highly-regarded genre-bending filmmakers Timur Bekmambetov (directing) and Tim Burton (producing), the birth of Smith’s pulsating book came about in 2009 Seth Grahame-Smith was on a US book tour to promote a new “mash-up” fiction book, “Pride And Prejudice And Zombies.” As he travelled the nation’s bookstores, from state to state, he noticed two things. In the bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth, every store had a promotional table set up with biographies of the iconic president. And at the height of the popularity of TWILIGHT, every store would stock a range of Young Adult vampire fiction right next to it. He remembers thinking, “if you could combine the two, surely you’d be onto a winner.”

It began as a cynical observation, to be honest with you,” he admits. “When I read about and researched the actual man, I became fascinated and fell in love with him and his trials and tribulations. Throughout his life he had every disadvantage: no wealth and no connections. He was poor as dirt, and surrounded by death. And yet, by the power of his intellect and his determination he was able to not only achieve the impossible of becoming a lawyer, but to become the leader of a nation tearing itself apart. And then he went on to save that nation.”

In fact it was, he suspects, the very first superhero origin story. “I began thinking that in the American psyche there’s really no greater superhero than Abraham Lincoln.”

Weaving a gothic horror tale into Lincoln’s biography, and doing so in as truthful a way as possible, came surprisingly easy for Grahame-Smith. Many moments in the real Lincoln’s life jumped out straight away as being ripe for re-imagining with a vampiric twist. It began with the death of his mother when he was nine years old. “Her death had a tremendous effect on his life. The determination to escape his situation and better himself was borne of a desire to honor his mother’s memory. It was quite obvious to me that if it were a vampire that had killed her, that would set him off on this path.”

The result of the marriage of truth and fiction at the heart of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is bounced through Timur Bekmambetov’s very particular prism. Says Ben Walker, who plays Lincoln himself, “This is a period movie told in intricate and fascinating ways. It’s the same material, the same time, and we’re being very true to that, but through Timur’s imagination we’re getting to see the tiny minutiae that really make it special and fresh for us.”

Grahame-Smith summarizes the point of this grand adaptation very simply: “The film is a strange mix of absurdity and accuracy. The title makes an absurd promise, but everything after that is delivered with absolute sincerity. We never wink at the audience. We never play it as a joke. And whether it’s the set design, the costume design, or Lincoln’s prosthetics – everything is accurate. Timur knew early on that the more absurd the premise the more dedicated you have to be to it to pull it off.”

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” is from 20th Century Fox to be available in 2D and 3D format to be distributed by Warner Bros. in local cinemas on July 4.

Artista Hopefuls Flock Protégé Auditions in Visayas and Mindanao

More and more Filipino artista aspirants are auditioning for the newest reality-based search on Philippine TV, Protégé: The Battle for the Big Artista Break!

Hopefuls from the different provinces in Visayas and Mindanao flocked the audition venues to showcase their singing, dancing and acting prowess in front of the celebrity mentors.

Contenders from Cagayan de Oro and Davao lined up for hours aiming to be the first on queue to display their talents last June 1 and June 2. Some hopefuls stood out in the screening because of their interesting personality and captivating life story as they performed in front of Protégé Mentor Drama and Action Film Legend, Phillip Salvador.

A female cosplayer caught everyone’s attention because of her lush pink hair and harajuku outfit. But during her one-on-one interview with Mentor Phillip, she got very emotional when the actor uncovered her secret longing for her father’s love and approval.

What’s more, a 13-year-old male Davaoeño was also a crowd favorite when he sang a rendition of a Gary V. hit with keyboard accompaniment. After his performance, he inspired the spectators when he openly talked about his desire to win Protégé in order to provide the medical needs of his autistic brothers.

Who will make it to the 4 Protégé slots of the strict Mindanao Mentor? What kind of challenges awaits the contestants who’ll make it to the next stage of the competition?

Meanwhile, the Visayas leg for the auditions of Protégé kicked off with an astounding attendance from artista aspirants from the islands of Cebu, Bohol, Panay, Iloilo and Negros last June 7.

Some Protégé applicants from Mindanao sailed and flew to the Queen City of the South to try out the auditions. They came all the way from Dipolog, Cagayan De Oro and Davao despite the scheduled auditions in their region.

Hundreds of talents stepped on stage to get the nod of approval from the Visayas celebrity mentor, Kapuso actress Jolina Magdangal. Many of the hopefuls proved that one must try anything just to get a step closer to that elusive artista dream even if it entails giving shock or unpleasant amusement to the mentor. One of the most notable performances that took place during this talent hunt was the jaw-dropping cirque dance-off of two Cebuanos — a chubby boy and a flamboyant girl.

The search is not yet over as two more areas will open their doors for the Protégé Call-out: SM Pampanga (June 16) and SM Mall of Asia (June 18 and 19). Auditions will be from 10am- 6pm.

PROTÉGÉ: The Battle for the Big ARTISTA Break will be hosted by multi-awarded Kapuso star Dingdong Dantes as the Gala Presenter and versatile actress Carla Abellana as the Journey Host. Jennylyn Mercado returns as the host of Inside Protégé while Maxene Magalona is the Web Jock for the daily updates in Protégé

Henry Hill is Dead

Henry Hill, a former ‘Goodfellas’ gangster is dead. He was 69.

Henry Hill spent much of his life as a “goodfella,” believing his last moment would come with a bullet to the back of his head. In the end he died at a hospital after a long illness, going out like all the average nobodies he once pitied.

Hill, who went from small-time gangster to big-time celebrity when his life as a mobster-turned-FBI informant became the basis for the Martin Scorsese film “Goodfellas,” died Tuesday at a hospital after a long illness, longtime girlfriend Lisa Caserta said.

Hill had open heart surgery last year and died of complications from longtime heart problems related to smoking.

Richard Gutierrez Climbs the Mountains of Kalinga in 'Pinoy Adventures'

Pinoy Adventures” will feature the ecotourism discovery destination of the north, Kalinga.

Master Ryan Cayabyab Lauds the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra

The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra is the newest, most exciting addition to the top artists of the Kapamilya Network.

It is comprised of arguably the best crossover musicians of the country who can perform all types and genres of music, led by a formidable music director, Gerard Salonga. Rehearsing this afternoon was a breeze. The rare event on Saturday combines only the best Filipino artists together in the concert, with the best musicians of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic. What more can I ask for as Musical Director? Ang ganda at ang sarap ng tugtugan.”

These are the words of music genius Master Ryan Cayabyab after the rehearsals at the Dolphy Theater at the ABS-CBN compound in preparation for the “Icons at the Arena,” a concert that brings together the best of OPM music icons on June 16 at SM Mall of Asia Arena. The concert is going to be the first major public performance of the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra.

Early this year, ABS-CBN and First Philippine Holdings joined hands to promote an advocacy for Filipinos to connect and experience “real” and “good” music. Thus, the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra was created to defy the notion that a full orchestra is only limited to classical music. The 40-piece musical ensemble, is a first in the history of the Kapamilya Network.

ABS-CBN chairman Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III stressed that it aims to provide music of the highest caliber to the general audience. ABS-CBN President, Charo Santos-Concio, on the other hand had expressed her full support for the orchestra and her optimism that this will be a significant platform to celebrate the character and soul of Filipino music.

ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra’s executive director Mickey Munoz also stated, “Our new “Kapamilya” shall also service the performance and music needs of ABS-CBN such as the concert series, as well as the musical scoring on cinemas as well as live and stage performances.” He added that ABS-CBN is taking music seriously, sharing that Youth Orchestra is also being formed to train indigent but talented young Pinoys to play musical instruments and entice them to turn their attention from game consoles to music and culture.

The curtain unfurls as the ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra dominates the Pinoy music scene. For inquiries and bookings, please contact The Executive Director, ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra at 415.2272 local 2326.

‘The Campaign’ Releases New U.S. Posters

Warner Bros. has just released two new U.S. posters for its upcoming comedy “The Campaign” starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis.

Directed by Jay Roach, “The Campaign” also stars Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott and Katherine LaNasa, with John Lithgow, Dan Aykroyd and Brian Cox. The election comedy bows in the Philippines this August.

In the film, when long-term congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.

At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.

As election day closes in, the two are locked in a dead heat, with insults quickly escalating to injury until all they care about is burying each other, in this mud-slinging, back-stabbing, home-wrecking comedy that takes today’s political circus to its logical next level. Because even when you think campaign ethics have hit rock bottom, there’s room to dig a whole lot deeper.

“The Campaign” is distributed in the Philippines by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Rihanna Body Double on Armani Ad is Jahnassa Aicken

Despite her denial, rumor has it that Rihanna used a body double in his latest Armani Jeans ad.

British tabloid The Sun reports that Rihanna used the body of model Jahnassa Aicken in his Armani commercial where she was seen rolling around in bed wearing an Armani undies.

The newspaper also claimed that the singer's management insisted that Aicken sign a nondisclosure agreement prohibiting her from talking about the job. And that the model received a modest sum for her work and was cast in the ads after serving as a stand-in for the singer when her "We Found Love" video was shot in Northern Ireland.

However, on her Twitter account @rihanna, the singer vehemently denied the report saying:

"Ok @thesunnewspaper, this is the only way I could say this to you!!! F—K YOU…AND yo baggy ass condom,"

"Who is Jahnassa?"

Does she have a tat on her hand too?" Rihanna subsequently asked on Twitter.

50 Cent vs. Oprah Winfrey: 50 Cent Named His Dog Oprah

After 6 years, 50 Cent and Oprah Winfrey decided to kiss and patch things up.

On Sunday, the two met and sat down for an intimate conversation in Oprah’s Next Chapter show.

50 Cent and Oprah have a wide ranging conversation that touches on the rapper's runaway success, 50 Cent vs. Curtis Jackson and even their feud.

During the interview, Oprah even confronted 50 Cent about naming his bitch (female dog) Oprah. She said that she would take it as a compliment, but she knows it wasn’t intended that way in the beginning: “That was not a compliment. I heard you had a bitch named Oprah!” Oprah said.

At the time, I was just looking at the situation, and I saw I was developing negative feelings for someone who doesn’t even know me…and I gave it to the dog.”

I would see moments when you would discuss your feelings on the culture, and everything that was wrong with the culture was what was on my CD, and I was like, ‘Oh, she doesn’t like me. I was saying, ‘If I can’t be your friend, at least let me be your enemy, so I coexist.’” 50 Cents explains.

Jessy Mendiola Goes Bold in "Isla"

"Given na naman na 'pag matagal na kayo sa isla, wala ka nang ibang damit kundi 'yun nalang, so natural naman siguro na unti-unti na siyang huhubaran." Kapamilya actress Jessy Mendiola says of her daring role in ABS-CBN's upcoming Gold series "Precious Hearts Romances: Isla".

Jessy admits she is now ready to shed her good-girl image as she gears up for her next sexiest role after Sabel, "This one's a whole different project, since 'Sabel' to now, ang-dami ko nang napagdaanan in real life. Gusto ko makita nila 'yung kaibahan ng ginawa ko sa 'Sabel' atsaka dito.

"So I guess in the sense of maturity, yes, I am ready, because first day palang namin na merong ganitong scenes sa project, I said yes already," she said.

Jessy will be paired for the first time with one of Kapamilya's sexy leading men Matteo Guidicelli.

"Sobrang gaan lang niya [Matteo] katrabaho, aalagaan ka niya sa set, pino-protect ka niya. I feel very comfortable with Matteo, personally and in our working relationship," Jessy said of Matteo.

Joining Jessy and Matteo are Matt Evans, Jewel Mische, Aaron Villaflor and former PBB Housemates Paco Evangelista, Dionne Monsanto and Jessica Connelly.

"Precious Hearts Romances: Isla" tells the story of two strangers, Brennan (Matteo) and Yani (Jessy), who get stranded on an island after their ship gets wrecked.

Romance blooms between them as they spend time alone on the island, but the two strangers are not without their respective baggage from the "real world." Brennan is married to his dedicated wife Megan (Jewel), while Yani's childhood best friend Justin (Matt) has untold feelings for the young woman.

The romance that grows between Yani and Brennan will set off a series of twists and conlicts in the story.

Directed by Nico Hernandez and Connie Macatuno, "Isla" is slated for a release later this year.
