Q&A with Matt Damon for Family Oriented Movie “We Bought a Zoo”

Q&A with Matt Damon for Family Oriented Movie “We Bought a Zoo”

From director Cameron Crowe who gave us Jerry Maguire’s “You had me at hello” comes another impressionable and endearing film that will give us 20 seconds of courage in the Matt Damon starrer “We Bought A Zoo.”

Based on the best selling memoir of Benjamin Mee of the same title, Matt Damon delivers a powerful and moving performance as Benjamin Mee, a single father and recent widower who buys a rundown zoo with 200 exotic animals, hoping for a fresh start for his family.

Adventure, dramas and hilarity ensue as Mee and his two children learn how to care for and communicate with the animals while they rebuild their lives. In the film, Benjamin Mee is a widower when he moves in with the two children Dylan (Colin Ford) and Rosie (Maggie Elizabeth Jones). The plot essentially follows the path of a courageous family and tells the story of the incredible risk they take that transforms their lives.

Q: You filmed on location in Southern California at a ranch that was transformed into the fictional zoo. What was the set like?
A: “It was pretty magical. Rodrigo Prieto, our cinematographer, was using mostly natural light, which meant that our day was structured around the sun. It was a very beautiful kind of romantic light. I think everybody felt very comfortable on the set.”

Q: There are animals and children in this film, both notoriously difficult to work with. Did that present problems?
A: “We broke the rule of not working with animals or children because we worked with almost every kind of animal and kids too (laughs). The kids were great, I think that the cutest kids working today in Hollywood are probably in this movie. We were really prepared going in to the film … except for the animals. The one wild card was always going to be the animals because it is impossible to know if they are going to cooperate. But the animals were all terrific and great fun. It was not difficult at all because they were extremely well trained.

Q: At one point you have to pick up a lot of escaped snakes, what was that like?
A: “Scarlett loved the snakes; she had no fear at all (laughs). I was totally freaked out by the snakes to start with and then once I realized that they weren’t venomous, I relaxed a little. I started picking them up and handling them and I got into it. I had never picked up a snake before.

Q: In the film there is a great scene in which Benjamin talks about finding 20 seconds of insane courage, which is a memorable line that rings true. Have you had that experience yourself?
A: “Yes, I think actors often have those moments at the beginning of their careers. Every huge audition or screen test seems like the most important moment of your life and I remember being in pressured situations from a very young age. As a young actor, that 20 seconds of courage is something that you get used to. Sometimes when you are facing a big change in your life, all that is required is to take the first step. If you have the courage to take the first step then you might be shocked at what unfolds, and that turns out to be the story for Benjamin Mee.”

Q: Can you discuss the pivotal and very moving relationship Benjamin has with his son Dylan, played by Colin Ford?
A: “The relationship between Benjamin and his son is strained at the start of the story because of what they’ve gone through with the death of his mother. But it is also difficult because of Dylan’s age. He is getting to that stage where communication can often break down between a parent and a child. I haven’t really had to experience that yet with my own kids. I’ve got one thirteen year old, so maybe we’re entering into those years (laughs) I hope not. My own teenage years were pretty smooth and I never felt like there was a communication breakdown with my parents, so I’m hoping that I can have that same experience with my own kids. I did well in school; I was an intense kid though; I really wanted to be an actor.

I’m really grateful to my fellow Visayans for supporting me in “Budoy.” To perform in front of them is my way of saying thank you,” Gerald said.

Rediscovering the Love Story in “The Vow”

Rediscovering the Love Story in “The Vow”

In Columbia Pictures' new, poignant romantic drama “The Vow,” Paige (Rachel McAdams) and Leo (Channing Tatum) are a young married couple, madly in love and living fulfilling lives as artists in Chicago. One snowy night, the two fall victim to a car accident. Leo survives intact, but a head trauma erases Paige’s entire memory of her relationship with her husband. When she comes out of her coma, Leo is a stranger to her.

Suddenly Leo finds himself in the painful position of rebooting the relationship he’s waited his whole life for, and win his wife's love all over again. Paige has reverted mentally to the young law student she was five years earlier, before she met Leo and became an artist. In seemingly an instant, she is no longer the wife Leo knew, and on top of that, she no longer recognizes her current life. She can’t fathom why she is estranged from her parents (Jessica Lange and Sam Neill), misses her more conservative wardrobe, and doesn’t understand why she would have dropped out of university and a promising career in law. Making matters worse, Paige thinks she's still engaged to charming businessman Jeremy (Scott Speedman), who still wants her, and remains reluctant to embrace Leo, with his less conventional lifestyle making music, as anyone she might have ever loved.

When Paige's memory recovery appears to be a hopeless cause, Leo begins to confront his worst fear - that he's lost the love of his life and his only family. Refusing to give up, he decides to start fresh and court Paige as if they've just met, with the hope that since they fell in love once, they can do it again. It’s a challenge that will test everything he’s ever believed about love, about being true to oneself, and about that sacred part of every marriage ceremony: the vow two people make to each other.

“The Vow” is directed by Michael Sucsy (HBO's “Grey Gardens”) from a screenplay by Abby Kohn & Marc Silverstein and Jason Katims, story by Stuart Sender.

Everybody loves a good romance, but hasn’t every love story been told by this point in the history of cinema?

Spyglass Entertainment Co-Chairman Roger Birnbaum admits he’d grappled with this question for years. Then a news story crossed his desk: “I read an article about a couple who’d been in a car accident and the woman never recovered her memories of the man she loved.” Immediately, the unusual nature of the story spoke to him.

What happened to New Mexico residents Kim Carpenter and his wife Krickitt - an initially tragic but ultimately uplifting saga of a man and woman who found each other again after a seemingly insurmountable obstacle – touched many lives when it was first reported. The Carpenters would eventually publish a book about their experience in 2000.

Spyglass producer Jonathan Glickman describes what interested them in the Carpenters’ story. “We got excited by the idea of telling a story of a relationship that was inspired by true events that had not yet been seen, but was also relatable to anyone because of the universal themes about the need to adapt to change for any relationship to last.”

Krickitt Carpenter, who has been happily married to Kim now for 18 years even though the period of memory she lost never returned, boils down what happened to them this way: “My husband is amazing. He did everything he could to win me back. Life is full of ups and downs and challenges, but you have to dig down and be the best that you can be.”

Honoring the emotional reality of such an extraordinary incident required coming up with an original story that had the right balance, explains Glickman, “Because the story is so emotional and gripping, we didn’t want to make it a melodrama, but something that could elevate itself to one of those classic love stories like `The Way We Were' or `Love Story.' The script needed to be accessible, with humor and a light touch throughout, so that we don’t take ourselves so seriously.

I just thought it sounded like an incredible premise for a film,” says director Michael Sucsy. “The fact that two people are already in love when the movie starts, and then they’re ripped apart, and then they have to find a way back to each other, that really touched me. The thing that hit me the most was the fact that this could happen to anybody at any time. A lot of time when we deal with memory loss, it’s about Alzheimer’s and growing old, but I thought this was a really universal way of being able to relate to the problem.”

Opening across the Philippines in February, “The Vow” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games.

Timur Bekmambetov Delivers the Latest Special Effects in “Darkest Hour” 3D

Timur Bekmambetov Delivers the Latest Special Effects in “Darkest Hour” 3D

Visionary filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov who gave us the highly-stylized action packed “Wanted” and “Night Watch” produces the latest in mind-blowing special effects in the 3D thriller “Darkest Hour” starring Emile Hirsch, Max Minghella, Olivia Thirlby and Rachael Taylor.

Director Chris Gorak pits young internet entrepreneurs Sean (Hirsch) and Ben (Minghella) who arrive in Moscow amidst a mysterious lightening storm. Upon landing in the vibrant Russian capital to pursue their business dreams in the international economic center yet full of unscrupulous business practices, they met up with travelers Natalie (Thirlby) and Anne (Taylor) who are stranded in Moscow en route to Nepal.

The two pairs of best friends meet amid the glitz and glamour of the Zvezda Nightclub, the hot spot for the international and the beautiful in Moscow, including the young turk Skylar (Joel Kinnaman), the Swedish businessman who duped Sean and Ben. A mecca for the globe trotting youth, supermodels, and business elite congregating in Moscow, the club is quickly transformed to a scene of terror when the aliens invade and everything goes dark.

After surviving the initial attack hiding underground, days later the five emerge into the confines of a Moscow that’s become increasingly alien – the once pulsating city is now without power and is all but deserted, yet occupied by a force they don’t understand. Made up of electromagnetic wave energy, the alien beings kill brutally by shredding earthly life forms, reducing those in their way to their molecular structure instantly.

The aliens are also basically invisible to humans, however anything electrical gives them away. Daytime is now dangerous, so the survivors learn to travel across the city in the safety of night, while confronting their individual reactions to these extraordinary circumstances where everything familiar is gone.

Bekmambetov was happy to participate as a producer. “Producing and directing for me, is almost the same. When you’re directing, you’re not shooting, you’re not acting yourself, you’re not dressing actors… you’re directing,” explains Bekmambetov. “The producer is also managing processes - people and expectations - so for me to produce means you have the movie in your head and you have to find the right people to make it. It’s almost the same thing. You’re not screaming rolling on the set, but you’re still finding the right people and the right strategy.”

Originally, maybe 4 years ago, it was scripted in a small American town. The first time I spoke with (co-producer) Tom Jacobson, I said ‘Can we move it to Moscow?’ When you change the point of view it becomes an interesting project immediately. Like King Kong in Moscow would be a big deal, King Kong in New York nobody wants to play that game because it’s been done,” comments Bekmambetov. “It’s still quite intriguing for the viewer to be here because not so many western movies are made in Moscow. It makes the movie cool immediately.”

Timur and his team have been fantastic collaborators throughout the process. Early on, Tom, Monnie and I meet with Timur at his house in Los Angeles and had creative sessions that were really productive,” says director Gorak. “Timur is an incredible creative filmmaker in his own right, and he added touches to our alien design, movement, and activity. Their subtle existence and dangers of the alien and how to present that to the audience.”

Gorak continues, “Timur always adds that little touch to make it special… he's really good at that. What was the enemy and what were the rules of the enemy. Timur likes to police the mythology of the science fiction. What are these aliens, what are they made up of, what do they want? Those kinds of moments that Timur adds can become classic indelible images.”

Bekmambetov sees this project as a stepping stone for the Russian film industry. “This is the first big Hollywood movie that will all be made in Russia. We’ve shot parts of western movies here – a few shooting days on Get Smart, a Bourne movie with a piece made in Moscow – but nobody has made a whole Hollywood movie in Russia. It’s very helpful and important for our production company Bazelev because people learn how to work in system. It will help me in the future to make more movies here in Russia,” says Bekmambetov. “In our visual effects area, we have young people working with American producers and visual effects supervisor. The young Russian guys are learning a lot and at the end, we will have a great team who can then make another movie.”

“Darkest Hour” (3D) opens in cinemas on January 25 from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Talented Elle Fanning in “We Bought a Zoo”

Talented Elle Fanning in “We Bought a Zoo”

Elle Fanning gives a spirited performance in the true-life story based on the memoir of Benjamin Mee, “We Bought A Zoo” with Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Colin Ford and Maggie Elizabeth Jones.

Benjamin Mee (Matt Damon) is a widower when he moves in with the two children. The plot essentially follows the path of a courageous family and tells the story of the incredible risk they take that transforms their lives. While Matt Damon’s Benjamin Mee forms a close friendship with the rest of the zoo keeping personnel, a strong bond also develops between Lily (Fanning), a home schooled country girl and Dylan Mee (Colin Ford), a city boy adjusting to country life.

Q: What kind of girl is Lily?
A: She is actually a lot like me; she will be the first one to say ‘hi.’ Like me, Lily’s very sensitive. I’m not super tough. I’ll just sort of go for it. I love to laugh and be happy. I guess I’m not shy at all. Lily is definitely one of the most comedic characters that I’ve ever played. She is very quirky and funny.

Q: Can you discuss the relationship between Lily and Dylan?
A: Lily and Dylan are very different. If Lily was as down and moody as Dylan then I don’t think they would have connected. She’s the kind of person who would introduce herself first and he’s more of the shy type. He’s not so sure. When she first sees Dylan, she treats him sort of like an animal; she sees him as a mysterious interesting creature because her best friends are animals. She does not have friends who are kids so she’s not really sure how to relate to humans. She doesn’t really know how to act around kids her age.

Q: How did you approach your role on this film?
A: It is about learning; I always learn something new every time I go on a film set. I enjoyed watching how Matt treats everybody on set, and I learned a lot from that. He’s such a down to earth and very nice guy.

Q: It must have been fun working with the animals.
A: We loved all the animals; we would be walking to set and there would be peacocks right beside us, walking with us. It was such a strange thing to be in a zoo with so many different animals. I fed a tiger a bottle of milk although there was a cage between us. That was one of the cutest moments.

Q: Are you an animal lover?
A: I am an animal lover. I have a dog called Lou Ellen, a horse called Goldie and a fish called Angel Wings. I have had my fish for four years and it’s a normal gold fish but it’s a little different because it’s not gold. It’s fluorescent and it’s been alive forever; it’s like the miracle fish.

Q: Where do you think your talent comes from? Is it genetic? You and your sister Dakota are both such great actresses.
A: It is funny because both of our parents were athletes; they weren’t in the arts at all. They never acted; they weren’t even in school plays. My sister and I always pretended to be different characters around the house and we’d imagine that we were in different worlds. I think that our parents saw that and they wanted to find out if we really liked acting. So we began acting, then once we got on a film set we both really enjoyed it. Acting is something that I want to do my whole life; hopefully I’ll be able to.

Q: You are often working on movies. How normal is life at home?
A: I still have to clean up my room and do the normal chores girls my age do. I don’t get an allowance. I don’t go out a lot. The most I would do would be to go to a sleepover with my friends.

Q: What has kept you grounded?
A: We’re definitely a really tight-knit family. My grandmother goes with me on all of my movie sets and my sister always comes and visits. My Mom and Dad always come and visit too. My Dad’s the youngest of eight kids; we have fourteen cousins back in Georgia. I think it’s really nice to have people who are always there for you.

Q: In your opinion how would you describe the appeal of the film and what makes it special?
A: It will definitely lift people up when they go to see it. It’s a little sad, but then it’s also warm and light and emotional with the different relationships between all the people and there is such fun with the animals. They’re so cute. You will be laughing while watching the film and it will make you feel good. It shows a family at their lowest point because the kids have lost their Mom; Benjamin lost his wife. That’s the lowest you can get and then the film shows them really coming together as a family.

Elle Fanning made her film debut in 2001 at the age of two in “I Am Sam.” Her numerous TV appearances include “Criminal Minds” and “Dirty Sexy Money.” Her film credits include “Daddy Day Care,” “The Door In The Floor,” “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Babel,” “Déjà Vu,” “Reservation Road,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” “Phoebe in Wonderland,” “Somewhere” and “Super 8.”

“We Bought A Zoo” opens January 18 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Rooney Mara, a Best Actress Contender for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

Rooney Mara, a Best Actress Contender for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”

She wowed audiences with her brief but memorable performance as the ex-girlfriend of Mark Zuckerberg, in the opening scene of 2010’s “The Social Network.” Now, fast-rising star Rooney Mara breaks away from the pack with her riveting portrayal of the titular role in Columbia Pictures' harrowing thriller “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” She's nominated for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, and considered a shoo-in for the same honor at the Academy Awards.

Director David Fincher's “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” kicks off the screen adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s blockbuster Millennium Trilogy, the epic series of thrillers that have sold 65 million copies in 46 countries. First published in 2005, shortly after Larsson’s own death, the first novel in the series, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo introduced readers to financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and avenging hacker Lisbeth Salander (played in the film by Daniel Craig and Mara, respectively).

As soon as production was in motion for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” the search was on for the title character of Lisbeth Salander. The The danger was that everyone who had read the book had already formed a personal picture of her in their minds. Michiko Kakutani of The New York Times described Lisbeth thus in her review:

"Lisbeth Salander, Stieg Larsson’s fierce pixie of a heroine, is one of the most original characters to come along in a while: a gamin, Audrey Hepburn look-alike with tattoos and piercings, the take-no-prisoners attitude of Lara Croft and the cool, unsentimental intellect of Mr. Spock. She is the vulnerable victim turned vigilante; a willfully antisocial girl, once labeled mentally incompetent by the state’s social services, who has proved herself as incandescently proficient as any video game warrior.”

In adapting the character, Steven Zaillian aimed to capture all those contrasting shades of Salander’s persona, one that is heavily armored, yet vulnerable if any one dares to get that close. “She’s the kind of character who is the most fun to write,” Zaillian says. “There’s a kind of wish fulfillment to her in the way that she takes care of things, the way she will only put up with so much, but there are other sides to her as well. A big part of the power of the movie is Lisbeth Salander.

Fincher now wanted to find all that in an actress, but more than anything he wanted someone who would be willing to walk to the edge of an already risky character and take a leap. That’s what he found in Rooney Mara, but it wasn’t straightforward.

The filmmakers conducted an exhaustive search for the role of Lisbeth. Fincher put her through a seemingly unending series of intensive auditions and on about all the reasons someone shouldn’t want it – how it might change my life, and not necessarily for the better. Then he hands me his iPad and it has a press release on it saying I’ve been cast in the part. He told me that they planned to send it out that day and I had a half an hour to decide if I wanted them to or not.”

Mara didn’t hesitate. The character was already under her skin. “There’s never been a female character like Lisbeth, this sort of tiny, androgynous person who has so many different facets to her,” she says. “You’re so with her – and yet, at the same time, you question her because she’s not someone who always does things you agree with. To me, that was really interesting.”

She adds: “I think a lot of people relate to her, even if she is also strange to them, because most people at some point have felt like an outsider or like they are being held back by the powers that be.”

As soon as she accepted the role, Mara was in the gauntlet. “An hour after I told David yes, I was disassembling a computer, getting on a motorcycle and starting skateboard lessons. And literally five days later, I was in Stockholm,” she recalls. “There wasn’t really time to think about what it meant that I got the part, or how I felt about it. I just literally went into laser-focus mode.”

But she definitely wasn’t scared away by Fincher’s warnings. “He told me, ‘You’re going to have to go to Sweden and be alone and experience this girl’s life.’ He told me, ‘The movie is going to consume you. You’ll have to say goodbye for a time to your family and friends.’ But he didn’t really know me yet, then,” she explains. “He didn’t know that I’m actually a loner and that what he wanted didn’t scare me. It might have scared someone else, but not me.”

Eventually, she also radically transformed her entire appearance, cutting her long hair, undertaking numerous body piercings, and bleaching her eyebrows, which she says was the most shocking. Not only was it a hauntingly transgressive look, but also it opened up Lisbeth’s face, allowing the character’s mix of unsentimental intelligence and buried rage room to play out.

Right before we did the bleaching, I was really together, I was ready for it, I was excited,” Mara recalls. “Then I looked in the mirror and I really freaked out. But I think the bleaching was one of the best things we did for the look of the character. It really put our own stamp on it.”

Another part of Mara’s stamp on Lisbeth was finding just the right way to reveal all her self-imposed emotional blockades. “David and I talked about the idea that there is no open wound with Lisbeth. She’s all scar tissue. She doesn’t cry, she rarely allows herself to really feel, but beneath the scars, the audience has to know the wounds are there,” she describes.

In the end, Mara says the experience of playing Lisbeth was everything she fought for in those months of trying to nab the role. “It’s the kind of part that comes around once in a lifetime,” she concludes. “But apart from that, the thing I’m most excited to take from the experience is that I feel more capable. I’ve learned so much and done so many things I never thought I could do.”

She concludes: “That’s my favorite thing about David, that he challenges everyone. That’s why his movies are so great. Because they challenge you and make you think about things you wouldn’t have – and I think people like to be challenged.”

Janelle Manahan Tell-All Interview with Boy Abunda this Saturday

Janelle Manahan Believes Ramona Bautista Uploaded the Ramgen-Janelle Video

Janelle Manahan's lawyer Atty. Argee Guevarra said that they suspect Ramgen's sister Ramona “Mara” Bautista who is now in hiding as the culprit in the uploading of the sex video of their client and murdered actor Ram Revilla that feast the eyes of netizens lately.

Guevarra said on his interviw with "The Buzz" on Sunday, January 8.

Aside from Ramona, another Bautista sibling, Gail Furuyama, is implicated in the circulation of the controversial video. Atty. Luke Espiritu, another lawyer of Janelle’s, noted YouTube user gillespiegen created on November 9, 2011, as a name which he said “can easily be equated [to] ‘Gail spying on Ramgen.’”

May mga YouTube account na na-create bago pa kumalat ang sex video. Ginamit lang precisely for the purpose of spreading the sex video,” Atty. Espiritu also said.

Janelle’s camp is resolute on filing a criminal case vs. the Bautistas for allegedly violating Republic Act 9995, or the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009, which is incidentally authored by Ramgen’s half-brother, Senator Bong Revilla, Jr.

Sprinkling sparks and romantic angles to the series are the most desirable leading men in the industry- Geoff Eigenmann as Josh Ledesma and Sid Lucero as Iñigo Salcedo.

Playing an important role in the series is Alessandra de Rossi as Bernadette Alcantara while Mike Tan portrays the role Third San Jose.

In the series, Don Romualdo’s son, Cesar, falls in love with a factory worker named Isabel. Among all the girls that he dated, it is only Isabel whom Cesar gets serious with. However, Don Romualdo forces his son to marry Eva, an heiress of the bank who lends them money in order to sustain their business. Cesar later decides to leave Eva and fight for his love for Isabel. But the situation will change when Eva tells him that she is pregnant.

Cesar once had a baby named Bernadette from the former bold star Anna Marie but Don Romualdo was not convinced that Cesar is the father of the baby.

One day, when Eva tries to confront Isabel, a squabble takes place eventually putting the rallying employees to jail, including Isabel and Lucio, her avid suitor. Isabel hopes and prays that Cesar will help them get out of jail. As expected, the case against them was pulled out and they are released.

Full of gladness, Isabel hurriedly goes to the office of Cesar to thank him for the help. To her surprise, Cesar asks her to leave the company and puts an end to their romantic relationship. Her world falls apart and the shock causes an emotional breakdown. Lucio will bring her to the hospital to have her checked and the news of pregnancy was announced by the doctor. She then decides to tell Cesar about the good news but Eva will drive her away.

Eva now faces her fear of Cesar leaving them once he learns of Isabel’s pregnancy. Her mom, Sophia, will convince her to continue pretending that she’s pregnant. They will adopt a baby to make their plan realistic. It will be a success and the baby will be named Natasha.

After many years, the newly hailed Marketing Officer of the Legacy Corporation, Natasha, stumbles upon Diana in a beauty contest and a rivalry is born between them.

The well-loved CEO of the Legacy Corporation Cesar Alcantara passes away. His untimely death marks the fight of Bernadette and Diana for legal rights to their father’s name and estate.

Having three beautiful daughters battling to be the successor of the Legacy Corporation, who will emerge on top? Up to what extent are they willing to fight to inherit the Legacy of their father? And who will reign as the sole owner of the corporation?

Josh Hutcherson Explores “The Mysterious Island” in “Journey” Sequel

Josh Hutcherson Explores “The Mysterious Island” in “Journey” Sequel

Actor-on-the-rise Josh Hutcherson (upcoming “The Hunger Games”) returns as young explorer Sean in New Line Cinema's “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” the follow-up to the 2008 worldwide hit “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”

When the story opens, young Sean is definitely not where he wants to be. It’s been years since his father’s death, and his mother, Liz (Kristin Davis), has recently married Hank (Dwayne Johnson) and relocated the family to suburban Ohio. With no friends around, and a stepfather with whom he’s convinced he has nothing in common, Sean spends many solitary hours poring over his maps and Jules Verne novels and dreaming about undiscovered corners of the world that await him.

He feels trapped,” says Hutcherson, who reprises a role that has matured in sync with his own life in the four years since “Journey to the Center of the Earth” first screened. “He’s ready to move on to bigger things, and he’s filled with curiosity about the world, which I completely understand. I think a lot of people do, even if they’re not necessarily interested in discovering lost islands. There’s just a driving need to be out there on your own, figuring things out and finding your own way.”

More specifically, Hutcherson emphasizes, “Sean doesn’t want any part of his step-dad. He thinks the guy has nothing to offer; he’s unhip, uncool and has no imagination.”

Hank and Sean are at odds from the beginning, as one wants to connect and the other wants to distance himself,” explains Johnson. “Family is one of the most important thing to Hank, and his intention throughout the story is to make his family whole again.

But as noble as Hank’s intentions are, Sean feels he’s to blame for everything wrong with his life right now. More importantly, he’s sure to be the immovable object standing between Sean and the exploration the young man considers his birthright.

That assumption will be tested sooner than Sean thinks when he receives a strange radio call one night. It’s an encrypted S.O.S. that he suspects may be from his grandfather, Alexander, who hasn’t been heard from since he set out to prove that the Mysterious Island in Jules Verne’s novel was fact and not fiction.

Alexander is Sean’s idol. He’s pretty much always done whatever he wanted, and he’s always off on some crazy expedition,” says Hutcherson. “If Alexander is in trouble, Sean will do anything to reach him.

Sean couldn’t be more thrilled and vindicated. But his euphoria at finding his grandfather is short-lived when he learns that getting off the island will be much harder than falling onto it, and that they have very little time in which to accomplish it. The ground beneath them is sinking. Fast. The entire land mass will be underwater in days, if not hours, and their slim chance of survival is entirely in their own hands.

Hutcherson was most recently seen in Lisa Cholodenko’s Academy Award®-nominated feature, “The Kids are All Right.” His additional film credits include “The Vampire’s Assistant,” opposite John C. Reilly and Salma Hayek; “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D,” “Bridge To Terabithia”; “Firehouse Dog”; “RV”; “Little Manhattan”; “Zathura” and “The Polar Express.” Hutcherson won Young Artist Awards for Leading Young Actor for his roles in “Zathura” and “Bridge to Terabithia.”

Opening across the Philippines on February 02 in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular theatres, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is a New Line Cinema presentation, will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
