Michael De Mesa Returns to the Philippines to Join TV5′s ‘Valiente’ Remake

After two decades, TV5 brings back the most loved and the most talked about drama series on television - Valiente.

A captivating story that will put to test the value of friendship and love and unravel a deeply kept secret of two families, this remarkable drama is top-billed by the most respected actors and actresses of the country who will give justice to each of the unique characters in the story.

Michael De Mesa, the acclaimed actor who played the role of the original Valiente, returns to the country to be part of the project. He left the country in 2009 to live in the US, where he now works as a marketing personnel. In October 2011, he received an offer to play a major role in TV5′s upcoming remake of Valiente.

According to him, he said yes to the project because he’s close to the production people behind Valiente, though there was one factor he considered a challenge before he made his decision to return to the Philippines. “It was hard kasi recession sa States. Everybody values their job and I feared that if I left for a long time, baka mawala yung work ko dun… But then, when I spoke to my boss, it was a good thing that he understood naman. That was the sign that I was waiting for: kapag pumayag siya, then I’d really push through with TV5’s Valiente.

Michael admits that he feels flattered that the production team still considered him to be part of such a big cast. In the new Valiente series, he gets to work with Jacklyn Jose and Mark Gil. He also gets to reunited with Gina Alajar, John Regala, Oyo Sotto and director Joel Lamangan.

For JC De Vera, who is now the Valiente of the new generation, Michael gives this piece of advice: “Always be serious with your craft, never stop learning, and always keep your feet on the ground.”

Michael will be playing the role of Damian Valiente, the trusted worker in Hacienda Braganza and the one who serves as Gardo’s (JC De Vera) father. Valiente makes its exciting comeback this February on TV5.

BURBANK, CA, – Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” continued its strong run through the holiday frame, with exceptional numbers at both the domestic and international box offices.

The international performance is made even more impressive by the fact that the film is tracking better than 2009’s blockbuster “Sherlock Holmes” - which grossed $315 million internationally and $524 million worldwide - with “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” still to be released in many major international markets. The announcement was made January 4 by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

“Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” has earned more than $265 million worldwide, with an estimated $140 million and counting on the domestic side. Internationally, the box office numbers are pacing ahead of the first “Sherlock Holmes” in the same territories in the same time frame, with the new film yet to open in 25 markets, including the Philippines, Australia, China, Brazil, France, Spain and Japan.

Holmes’ investigation into Moriarty’s plot becomes more dangerous as it leads him and Watson out of London to France, Germany and finally Switzerland. But the cunning Moriarty is always one step ahead, and moving perilously close to completing his sinister plan. If he succeeds, it will not only bring him immense wealth and power but alter the course of history.

Janelle Manahan Talks About Her Ordeal on KrisTV

Massacre Janelle Manahan appeared live on KrisTV yesterday morning, 2 months after the tragic death of his boyfriend Ramgen Revilla, where she personally shared her emotions over the incident (she was also shot twice on the left side of her face and shoulder), her struggle to find justice, and her 5-year relationship with Ram.

"Iniisip ko everything happens for reason. Kung bakit ako nabuhay it's maybe because I should give justice to what happened to him. I promise to give him justice, kung hanggang saan ko kaya I will do it." Janelle said.

Janelle also revealed that she and Ram had been living together for 5 years already.

Their living arrangement started right after they decided to become a couple.

Opo. Nag-a-artista ako nung time na yun. Six months after ng relationship, tumigil ako. Ayaw niya kasi wala po akong time sa kanya. E gusto niya 24/7 kami magkasama palagi.” Janelle revealed.

Now, that Ram is gone, Janelle has only one regret - that she wasn’t able to say “I love you” before he passed away.

"Sana kahit for a while makausap ko siya, kahit sa dream. Hindi ko kasi nasabi sa kanya ang damdamin ko sa kanya that day even though siya buong araw siyang nag-a-I-love you. Kasi para sa akin kapag ang tao laging nag-a-i-love you sa iyo parang tingin mo hindi na totoo or OA. That day talagang smallest thing magte-thank you siya at maga-I love you, so parang di ko pinapansin so hindi ako nag-I-love you back. So sana yon lang ay masabi ko sa kanya," she said.

GMA Network Delivers Breakthrough Ratings Performance in 2011

In the year ended, GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) altered television channel ranking as it overtook ABS-CBN in nationwide total day household audience share, placing the latter only to second rank – according to broadcast industry’s more trusted ratings service provider, Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.

Based on full 2011 nationwide data of Nielsen (December 25 to 31 based on overnight ratings), GMA posted a 34.2 percent total day average television household audience share, outscoring ABS-CBN’s 31.1 percent and TV5′s 15.6 percent by substantial gaps.

GMA noticeably increased its total day household audience share record in 2011 versus 2010 by 3.2 points. In contrast, ABS-CBN’s record suffered a significant drop of 8.6 points during the same period.

In effect, GMA gained almost 1.5 million viewers from all over the country in 2011 relative to 2010, while ABS-CBN lost more than 500,000 viewers across all dayparts, using the assumption that there are five viewers per household.

In December, GMA recorded substantial margins versus ABS-CBN and TV5 in total day average household audience share nationwide. GMA had 36.2 share points, higher than ABS-CBN’s 29.1 points; and clearly ahead of TV5′s 15 points.

GMA was a notable winner in both morning and afternoon blocks, where it led ABS-CBN by double-digit margins in National Urban Philippines.

GMA also led across all dayparts in the important areas of Mega Manila and Urban Luzon, where bulk of television households in the country at 77 percent and 58 percent, respectively, are found.

GMA dominated the list of overall top 30 programs in National Urban Philippines with 17 entries. In Urban Luzon, GMA had 23 programs in the same list; while in Mega Manila, GMA almost swept the slots with 25 entries.

Among GMA’s top performing programs this December were Eat Bulaga, Pepito Manaloto, 24 Oras, Amaya, Protégé (The Final Battle), Munting Heredera, and Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.

Owing to the Kapuso Network’s consistently high nationwide ratings performance, the industry’s top 30 advertisers grew their advertising accounts with GMA by 36 percent or over one third for the period January to September 2011 from the same period in 2010. ABS-CBN’s regular advertising revenues, meanwhile, declined by four percent during the same period.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is also used by 21 companies including two other local networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local major TV network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

In Mega Manila alone, the Nielsen TV Audience Measurement has a sample size of 800 homes as compared to Kantar Media’s 770 homes. Nationwide, Nielsen has a total sample size of 2,005 homes compared to the lower sample size of 1,370 utilized by Kantar Media.

ABS-CBN continuously claims that it has a pending case against Nielsen. But based on available court records, the case was dismissed by Presiding Judge Charito Gonzales of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) on January 7, 2008 for being prematurely filed. The Court likewise denied the Motion for Reconsideration filed by ABS-CBN in an Order dated June 8, 2009.

On January 5, 2010, Atty. Maila Doroteo Santos, Branch Clerk of the Quezon City RTC, issued a Certificate of Finality, which confirms the Court’s Decision on the said case as final and executory. Chipmunks’ Chipwreck on a Character-Changing Adventure

Chipmunks’ Chipwreck on a Character-Changing Adventure

The Chipmunks are back as you’ve never seen them before in character-changing adventure that caught them by surprise in “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.”

As the story opens, The Chipmunks, Chipettes, and their eternally beleaguered guardian, Dave Seville, are en route, on a luxury cruise liner, to the International Music Awards. Alvin, of course, cannot resist wreaking havoc on this ultimate playground. He attempts to steer the vessel, takes over the hot tubs, and dons a tuxedo – secret agent style – to work the baccarat and blackjack tables.

Jason Lee who reprises his role as Dave Seville relates that “As always, the operative words for Alvin are ‘chaos’ and ‘action.’ It’s his first time out of the city, and he wants to make the most of it. Dave isn’t happy about Alvin’s shipboard antics – and lets him know it. It’s not easy to be sympathetic, likable and charismatic when you’re screaming ‘ALVIIIIIN!’ so loudly you’re breaking windows around you!

The unexpected flight is on a runaway kite that whisks the Munks and Chipettes to their new home in a deserted island. In a way, it’s a kind of homecoming for the boys, though not necessarily a welcome one. Justin Long, who voices Alvin shares – “Alvin wouldn’t be Alvin if he didn’t trigger and lead the mayhem. It’s the Alvin we know and love…at least, at first glance. He’s the reason they become chipwrecked.”

The new home takes the chipmunks completely out of their element after being pampered and domesticated – in the movie, their adventures are amped by heroic scrapes, narrow escapes, and huge escapades.

Adding to the adventure is the appearance of a character new to the Chipmunks universe – “Simone,” a swashbuckling Frenchman with a taste for adventure and a lust for life. If Simone looks familiar, it’s because he’s the alter-ego (and polar opposite) of buttoned-up and brainy Chipmunk, Simon, who transforms into Simone after he’s bitten by a tropical spider. (Simon is again voiced by Matthew Gray Gubler while Simone is voiced by Alan Tudyk).

For most of the movie, Simon is not even Simon; he’s Simone. But by the end of this adventure, Simon learns there’s a little bit of Simone in all of us. Simon’s transformation leads to changes for Alvin,” says Gubler.

Simone acts before he thinks; he’s very much about derring-do, no matter what the real-world consequences. In a way, he’s become like a turbo-charged European version of Alvin. So now, to ensure that The Chipmunks make it off the island, Alvin has to step up and be the logical, responsible one. Alvin becomes Simon — and a little bit, like Dave,” Janice Karman, the movie’s producer further explains.

“A key theme in this movie is about the Chipmunks growing up, and how hard it is for a parent – in this case, Dave – to let his kids be independent. But kids (and chipmunks) are going to grow up and they’re going to be independent. It’s inevitable, of course. I think that idea is going to resonate with kids and parents. Everyone can relate to the story, even though it’s a singing/dancing/adventure-seeking Chipmunk movie,” director Mike Mitchell concludes.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” opens January 8, Sunday, in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Mario Maurer Talks About Life, Love, Fans and 2012 Career Plans

Mario Maurer Talks About Life, Love, Fans and 2012 Career Plans

By now, Mario Maurer is a certified celebrity… a big star not just in Thailand but also here in the Philippines—as demonstrated by the rabid reception he has received from his ardent, screaming fans with point-and-shoots and SLRs during both his visits to the country. But why is his name on a toilet?

On ten of them, in fact. But it’s not too weird when he reveals the reason behind it.
Hope Floats

This year’s monsoon season wreaked havoc in Thailand, affecting Bangkok and surrounding neighborhoods and flooding most provinces in the south. By now, the ongoing flooding has affected over 12 million people, with damages reaching 1,440 billion baht (US$45 billion) as estimated by the World Bank as of this month.

Naturally, Mario is not going to sit around enjoying the perks of his growing popularity without lending a hand to his struggling countrymen. His idea? Build toilets.

I took my money and I hired people to make [them],” he shares with Bulletin Entertainment and other members of the press backstage after Penshoppe’s The Encore event at SMX on December 13. “Because the flood is very high; [in] some [places the water is] like one storey-high. There are no place to go for toilet so I [had people make] toilets that can float on the water.

He adds, “It’s not easy to do, it’s very big [he points to a corner of the interview area].” He describes the floating toilets as having tanks underneath. “It’s a very nice toilet,” he says.

But a funny thing happened on the way their destination. “I ordered it… I said I wanted 10, I didn’t tell them a word that I wanted my name on [them]. And they come in pickups; and every pickup has ‘toilet… toilet… toilet…’ Ten pickups that came from another city very far away… and on the door is like, ‘Mario Maurer…’”

Well, there are worse things that a celebrity’s name can be associated with, but at least the Mario-branded loos have a higher purpose.

Fan Love

More than the celebrity that being an actor accords him, he says, “When I do a new role, like new movie [or a] new drama, it’s like a challenge for me because you don’t know what you’re going to do. Like, you know the role, but you don’t know what it is exactly you’re going to say or do tomorrow or something.”

But behind the frenetic life of a showbiz personality, Mario stays true to himself because he is level-headed enough to keep in mind that “we’re regular people… just like any other…” Add to this, his relationship with his long-time girlfriend keeps him grounded. In fact, when asked if he knew that his upcoming co-star Erich Gonzales [for a Star Cinema movie they are scheduled to shoot in 2010] revealed that he already had a girlfriend and if he was shocked or mad about it, he replied dispassionately, “I absolutely feel nothing. It’s okay…

Of his girlfriend, who is also an actress in Thailand, he says, “We’ve known each other for a long time—like seven years” and reveals they’ve also been in a relationship that long. “So we’re friends. Her best friend is my best friend.”

But he says his fans are cool with it. “Maybe a long time ago, the fans don’t like it if you have a girlfriend. But I think nowadays they understand it—[that] even if you are a movie star, you [also] have a normal life. It doesn’t mean you have to be a movie star 24 hours… [that] you cannot get out of it.

The Life of a Star

While lamenting the loss of privacy, especially when he’s out with friends—in a mall, for instance—who have to wait around on the side for him when he runs into a group of fans who want their photos taken with him, he nevertheless says, “It’s hard but I understand. I get used to it and everything…"

And he enjoys the little surprises that go with it, like this Penshoppe endorsement he scored [after the British “Gossip Girl” actor Ed Westwick], as well as his giant billboard on the busiest section of EDSA.

It got me shocked because the billboard is so big. In Thailand, I never had [a] huge billboard [like that]. This is the biggest billboard for me in my life,” he says onstage at The Encore, his comeback fashion show following his successful appearance on Fashion Week just last October.

While he reveals that “most of the money [my] spent on the clothes,” given that he is in showbiz, he also gets a kick out of his endorsement because he now has “like 30 jeans at home of Penshoppe. I wear, like, [one on] Monday, Tuesday another one, Wednesday another one…

Message to Pinoy Fans

Like many celebrities, Mario also reaches out to fans via social networking sites. An active Twitter user, he never forgets to say hi to his Filipino fans—whom he describes as “very sexy”—especially before he visits.

I want to tell all my Filipino fans, thank you very much for supporting me. And all the tweets you tweet me, I appreciate them. If I didn’t answer you, I will try to answer all of you. My phone is very bad lately; I want to change my phone. And if I have enough time I will answer all of you,” he tells his adoring public on stage, where he would also be presented with a birthday cake [a belated surprise for his Dec. 4 birthday] and the crowd’s rousing delivery of the birthday song.

A Busy 2012

Mario returns to the Philippines sometime in 2012, mainly to shoot first movie here. While he is still hoping to get to go to the beach of his choice, Joyce Ramirez of PR Asia interjects, “We’re shooting the movie in a far off location, that’s all we can say about it.”

When asked if there is a role he wants to play in the future, Mario notes—with a little help from Joyce—that he would be thrilled to do something for “CSI.” Being that PR Asia also does the publicity here for AXN, which shows the “CSI” franchise, it might not be an impossible goal. “It’s more than a dream because ‘CSI’ is something I watch with my father. It’s something I learned English from. And it would be great if I could play a part or I get a role there,” Mario says.

For now, though, he’s also gearing up for a concert in Thailand with four other actors from Channel 3. “Now I am starting to do dancing and singing,” he relates, hoping to improve his dancing skills, as seen on a YouTube clip where he busted out a less-than-stellar performance of the Dougie. He also sang in a track on his brother’s album, “but they’re trying to change my voice or something. My voice is no good, so they’ll try to make it good,” he admits sheepishly.

If his lessons work, maybe his next live appearance in the country will already be for a real show.

Charice Preview Magazine Cover Photoshoot Behind-The-Scene Video Proves Charice is Beautiful

Preview Magazine releases the behind-the-scene photoshoot video of Charice to dispel rumor about the "heavy editing" of the international singer's photo so she could look glamorous and more beautiful on its January 2012 issue cover.

Although they said that it was not digitally altered, Preview's creative director Vince Uy revealed that they used photoshop to enhance Charice's look.

"We don't deny that we use Photoshop. That already, I think, in this day and age, it's already a common practice. But we can say though that we didn't overuse it. We wanted to give Charice something fresh, something people haven't seen her in. It's actually the hair that really made Charice look different." Uy explained.

And to further prevent more doubt on Charice' cover photo, Uy shared a link of Preview Magazine's Charice photoshoop, saying: "Charice for Preview Behind the Scenes video. Eto ang pruweba. Hindi po yun Photoshop".
