Miriam Defensor Santiago Dares Fr. Catalino Arevalo for a Debate About 'Hell'

Miriam Defensor Santiago is challenging Fr. Catalino Arevalo for a debate particularly dealing with one hot topic - 'hell' - after the latter said that the lady Senator "is worthy of the fires of hell" and should issue a public apology for repeatedly berating the House prosecutors in the impeachment trial of Chief Justice Renato Corona during his homily on Saturday, March 3, at Our Lady of Edsa Shrine (read related article HERE).

As expected, the feisty Senator fires back asking the priest for a debate saying that under a resolution by the Second Vatican Council, “there is no hell; but even if there is, there is nobody there.”

Santiago added that hell is not a geographical place but just a “metaphor” used by the Scriptures to imply the condition of a man’s distance from God.

Under Vatican 2, the story of Genesis is no longer a historical fact but a myth. The Bible should not be read literally, but should be read in its Aramaic context. Unfortunately, some of the religious refuse to accept the changes started by Vatican 2,” she said.

I have gone over the Vatican II Council documents and for concise summary. There are no new doctrines and dogmas, but more on addressing and understanding the modern world, ecumenism (relationships among various Christian denominations), some relaxation on the liturgy (like the use of vernaculars in the Christian rites among others, moving away from Latin). The teaching about “what you sow is what you reap” remains. “Demons and angels” are still there.

The use of metaphor, as in literary writings, does not negate the existence of “hell” as a form of punishment. While Vatican II went further to respect existence of other sects, the council did not change in the substance of its teachings according to the New and Old Testaments.

I recall in an earlier argument by the Lady Sen. on RH Bill, as if the use of ones conscience makes a choice righteous from her interpretation of Vatican II. She missed the point in understanding that conscience can either be good or bad, just that man has to decide ultimately and to respect decisions of others.

The Lady Senator brags about her Master Degree In Theology, forgetting that there are thousands of Theologians and Philosophers from the likes of Socrates/Aristotle of antiquity, Saints Aquinas/Augustine of middle ages, to Espinosa / Voltaire / Gibran / Mortimer of contemporary times and many more, and differing in their discourses in minor and major ways. The Lady Senator is really unpredictable - hmm. . .

It is very proud for Senator Miriam to challenge a priest on a debate.
However, I think that its better to let the politician deal with politics and let the priest be priest.

Miriam studied theology...and clearly failed to understand it. Her mind is really not as sharp as she purports it to be...
