Gretchen Barretto Talks About Claudine Barretto, Angelica Panganiban and KC Concepcion

Being the La-Greta that she is, Gretchen Barretto who recently won her third consecutive Best Actress award for her performance in ABS-CBN defunct soap "Magkaribal" at the 25th Star Awards For Television ng Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC) on November 22, can't help but to express her reactions on the different controversies sorrounding the three closest women in their life right now.

First, her sister Claudine Barretto. Although they had a series of misunderstanding in the past, Gretchen, who again is in good terms with her sister, was asked about the undying issue of separation, infidelity and money matters between Claudine and husband Raymart Santiago.

"I'm not about to talk about her personal problems." Gretchen started sharing the press before the start of PMPC Star Awards at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World.

"At yun din ang pinag-usapan namin - na kailangang respetuhin ko kung ano yung mga pinagdadaanan niya. So, kung ano yung gusto niyang i-divulge, gagawin niya yun on her own because Claudine is an adult. Hindi naman siya bata na kailangang ipagtanggol ko, kaya na niya." she explained.

On Angelica Panganiban. Their past rift and word war have already been put in the grave. In fact, they are now both working comfortably and wish to establish a friendship while doing ABS-CBN's upcoming primetime soap "Alta" with KC Concepcion, Luis Manzano, Zanjoe Marudo, and Diether Ocampo.

"Wala kaming choice. Okay na okay na, kasi nagkausap na kami so nalabas na namin ‘yung reluctance namin. Nakilala ko si Angelica in a deeper way." she said.

Lastly, her other Alta co-star KC Concepcion who recently rumored to have been a huge relationship trouble with Kapamilya's prime asset Piolo Pascual.

"Feeling ko, kung anuman ang pinagdadaanan niya, kaya niya, e. And it's part of her journey in life.

"I see her strength.

"You know, she's really a good person inside. So I wish her to just enjoy life. Be honest. Be true to herself. And go for it... whatever it is." she said of KC.

Mo Twister and Rhian Ramos Back Together

Mo Twister and Rhian Ramos are reportedly back with their old ways. But unlike before, Rhian admitted that she could never be the same Rhian that Mo wanted her to be - "his girl".

Although the Kapuso model-actress admitted that she’s in constant communication again with DJ Mo via text, she is quick to clarify that it means nothing to her, "Yes, text-text lang. Nung birthday niya, nag-greet lang ako sa kanya sa text, ganoon lang. Nag-uusap naman kami if necessary, ganun." she explained.

"Actually, mas gusto ko 'yong walang boyfriend. Ang maging single uli, dahil nagkaroon ako ng time sa mga friends ko. Pag hindi busy, nakaka-attend ako ng party, nakakalabas kasama sila." Rhian added.

The "The Road" star also reportedly visited the DJ in the hospital when he got sick, "Oo pinuntahan ko siya. Kasi naman siyempre hindi naman mawawala yung concern ko. And I wanted to see lang kung okay siya, mukhang okay na at healthy pa.

"Of course, may concern ako and that's on my part. Ganun akong klaseng tao. That doesn't mean it's mutual." Rhian admitted.

You're insecure
Don't know what for
You're turning heads when you walk through the door
Don't need make up
To cover up
Being the way that you are is enough

Everyone else in the room can see it
Everyone else but you

Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But you when smile at the ground it aint hard to tell
You don't know
You don't know you're beautiful

If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know
You don't know you're beautiful
Oh oh
But that's what makes you beautiful

So c-come on
You got it wrong
To prove I'm right I put it in a song
I don't why
You're being shy
And turn away when I look into your eyes

Everyone else in the room can see it
Everyone else but you

Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But you when smile at the ground it aint hard to tell
You don't know
You don't know you're beautiful

If only you saw what I can see
You'll understand why I want you so desperately
Right now I'm looking at you and I can't believe
You don't know
You don't know you're beautiful
Oh oh
But that's what makes you beautiful

[Bridge]
Nana Nana Nana Nana
Nana Nana Nana Nana
Nana Nana Nana Nana

Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed
But you when smile at the ground it aint hard to tell
You don't know
You don't know you're beautiful

Baby you light up my world like nobody else
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed

"The Road" Celebrity Screening, a Huge Success

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

GMA Films' latest suspense-horror flick "The Road" had a very successful well-attended VIP Celebrity screening on Thursday night, November 24, at the Newport Cinema, Resorts World in Pasay City.

Aside from the movie's lead stars Alden Richards, Lexi Fernandez, Derrick Monasterio and Barbie Forteza, also present to catch the premiere showing of the scariest movie of the year courtesy of the event's host Tim Yap were Annabelle Rama, DJ Angelicopter, Aljur Abrenica, GMA Films President Annette Gozon-Abrogar, GMA Network Chief Executive and Chair Atty. Felipe Gozon. A surprise appearance of the newest Kapatid - the Megastar Sharon Cuneta to support his friend - the film's director Yam Laranas, even made the event more glittery successful.

Described by international film critics as “creepy to the extreme” (KillerFilm.com) and a “beautifully shot supernatural tale with incredible effects and great scares” (Bloody Disgusting), The Road is a story about a twelve-year-old cold case, which is reopened when three teenagers go missing while traversing an infamous and abandoned road. As investigators try to find leads to the whereabouts of the missing teens, they also unearth the road’s gruesome past that spans two decades – a history of abduction, crimes and murders. Although the road is isolated, anyone who tries to pass through it can be sure that he is not alone. Lingering in the dark and desolate pathway is a vengeful ghost who makes sure no one leaves the road – alive!

Starring Carmina Villarroel, Marvin Agustin, Rhian Ramos, Barbie Forteza, TJ Trinidad, tween stars Alden Richards, Louise delos Reyes, Derrick Monasterio, Lexi Fernandez, Ynna Asistio and Renz Valerio, "The Road" hits theatres nationwide beginning November 30, 2011.

GMA Kapuso Foundation Intensifies Reach in Cebu

GMA Kapuso Foundation Inc. (GMAKF), one of the country’s most trusted non-government organization and acknowledged leader in public service, has long been committed in touching the lives of the underprivileged members of the society nationwide. By carrying out developmental projects and ensuring its sustainable operation, the foundation becomes the “strong bridge” that effectively connects the distance between those who need help and those willing and able to extend help.

This Saturday, November 26, GMA Kapuso Foundation continues this mission as it intensifies its reach further by bringing Serbisyong Totoo a lot closer to the Cebuanos through a special event entitled “Serbisyong Tinud-anay Para sa Mga Cebuano” at Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, 11:30 am.

The event – which is geared towards eliciting compassion from donors and promoting volunteerism among Cebuanos – will be attended by no less than GMAKF EVP and COO Mel Tiangco together with GMA Regional TV AVP Oli Amoroso, GMA Regional News and Public Affairs AVP Cel Amores, and GMA TV Cebu Station Manager Ann Marie Tan.

Since 2008, the Kapuso Foundation has already mounted several projects in Cebu such as Kalusugan Karavan, Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan, Operation Bayanihan, and Special Health projects that has helped thousands of individuals. As the Foundation strengthens its presence in the area, Cebuanos are even more encouraged to extend a helping hand to those who are in need in more ways than one.

“With the creation of a GMAKF Cebu Chapter, it is easier to serve our Kapusong Cebuanos. On the other hand, it also provides an opportunity for Cebu residents to show their care and concern to their kapwa Cebuanos through the Kapuso Foundation,” says Tiangco.

Individuals and organizations may take part in reaching out to the underprivileged Filipinos through GMA Kapuso Foundation. To make a donation, deposit under the account name GMA Kapuso Foundation, Inc. Miriam Defensor Santiago Pick-up Lines a Major Hit in RH Bill Forum

Miriam Defensor Santiago Pick-up Lines a Major Hit in RH Bill Forum

Anong height mo? Paano ka nagkasya sa puso ko?

Masasabi mo bang bobo kung ikaw lang naman ang laman ng utak ko?

Using the above funny yet cheesy pick-up lines, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago caught the attention and interest of students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa during the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill forum on Friday, November 25.

But when the lady Senator received no response when she asked her audience “Sino sa inyo ang interesado sa sex?” she immediately urged students, “Kung hindi ka interesado, magpagamot ka, dahi abnormal 'yan eh.

During the forum, Santiago particularly discussed the importance of responsible and safe sex that the RH bill she authored tries to enforce. She also clarified that the bill is not intended to teach and push young people to indulge in sex but rather help them understand very well facts about human reproduction, pregnancy risk for women, contraception, and sexually transmitted diseases so they could deal responsibly with their sexual natures.

Sex will come, too, preferably married sex. Pero kung hindi mo na talaga mapigilan, puwede ba, mag-condom ka na lang?

Mali 'yong pag-iisip mo na magtatakbuhan sila sa ilalim ng acacia at magse-sex silang lahat,” Santiago explained.

And her message to those against the RH Bill?

Hahanapin ko ang mga magulang nila at tuturuan ko na mag-emergency contraception para hindi na makapanganak uli ng mga taong kamukha nila.” she said.

Bruno Mars - It Will Rain (Music Video and Lyrics)

If you ever leave me baby,
Leave some morphine at my door
‘Cause it would take a whole lot of medication
To realize what we used to have,
We don’t have it anymore.

There’s no religion that could save me
No matter how long my knees are on the floor
So keep in mind all the sacrifices I’m makin’
Will keep you by my side
Will keep you from walkin’ out the door.

Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same, if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

I’ll never be your mother’s favorite
Your daddy can’t even look me in the eye
Oooh if I was in their shoes, I’d be doing the same thing
Sayin there goes my little girl
Walkin’ with that troublesome guy

But they’re just afraid of something they can’t understand
Oooh well little darlin’ watch me change their minds
Yeah for you I’ll try I’ll try I’ll try I’ll try
I’ll pick up these broken pieces ’til I’m bleeding
If that’ll make you mine

Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

Don’t just say, goodbye
Don’t just say, goodbye
I’ll pick up these broken pieces ’til I’m bleeding
If that’ll make it right

Cause there’ll be no sunlight
If I lose you, baby
There’ll be no clear skies
If I lose you, baby
Just like the clouds
My eyes will do the same if you walk away
Everyday it will rain, rain, rain...

Albie Casino on Andi Eigenmann and Baby Adrianna Gabrielli

Now that Andi Eigenmann gave birth to their (?) love child named Adrianna Gabrielli, everyone is waiting for Albie Casino to open his mouth, probably to tell the truth that he is the father of the child, brought about by the natural feeling of "lukso ng dugo".

But no, Albie is consistent not to react and keep his silence on this controversy that caused him several TV and movie projects.

The big question now is, will he pursue the proposed DNA test on the baby?

Posted by JED on , under | comments (7)

Hacienda Luisita, the vast agricultural estate owned by the family of President Benigno Aquino III, was ordered by the Supreme Court to be distributed to tenant farmers.

The high court’s decision was unanimous, 14-0, in a 56-page resolution penned by Associate Justice Presbitero Velasco and promulgated on November 23, Wednesday.

The Supreme Court stressed in the resolution that “control over agricultural lands must always be in the hands of the farmers” and pointed out that allowing the 6,296 beneficiaries to remain stockholders would never allow them “gain control given the present proportion of shareholdings.”

GMA Network Executives are Jurors in the 39th International Emmy Awards

Four GMA executives were chosen to become members of the distinguished panel of jurors in the 39th International Emmy Awards.

GMA Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment Wilma V. Galvante, Vice President for Program Management Jose Mari R. Abacan, Vice President for GMA Worldwide Roxanne J. Barcelona, and Vice President for News Programs and multi-awarded broadcast journalist Jessica A. Soho were selected as members of the distinguished panel of jurors in the 39th International Emmy Awards.

Galvante participated as a juror in the final round of judging for the Best Actress category, where she reviewed entries from Brazil, Hong Kong, Sweden, and United Kingdom. Galvante was a judge in the Emmys in 2006 for the Best Comedy Program category, and in 2008 for the Best Actor category.

Soho, meanwhile, was tasked to evaluate entries in the English-Language Current Affairs category, which include entries submitted by news organizations from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. This is the second time in a row that the award-winning broadcaster was chosen to judge in the Emmy Awards after being a judge in the Documentary: Asia/Africa/Middle East category last year.

Abacan also returned as a juror, now in the Comedy category. Nominees in this division include semi-finalists from each of the four Emmy judging regions, namely, Europe, Latin America, English-Language, and Asia/Africa/Middle East. Last year, Abacan was a judge in the TV Movie/Mini-Series category.

For the fifth time, Barcelona joined the panel of jurors, this time in the final round of judging for the TV Movie/Mini-Series category. She likewise reviewed the regional semi-finalists from the four abovementioned regions. The last time Barcelona judged the International Emmys was in 2008 for the TV Movie/Mini-Series category.

Known as the Oscars of the television industry, the annual International Emmy Awards is organized by the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a worldwide organization composed of leading media and entertainment figures from all sectors of television including internet and mobile.

As it aims to recognize excellence in international television programming, the award-giving body gathers only the most knowledgeable TV practitioners from various fields of expertise to screen and select the winners.

The 39th International Emmy Awards was held on November 21 in New York City.

PCIJ Media Killings Series Part 2 “The Herson Hinolan Case: See No Evil”

PCIJ Media Killings Series Part 2 “The Herson Hinolan Case: See No Evil”

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism in partnership with GMA News TV airs The Herson Hinolan Case: See No Evil this Saturday night at 9:55 pm on Channel 11.

Herson Hinolan was a hard-hitting radio broadcaster for Bombo Radyo Kalibo. Hinolan’s bombastic and aggressive commentary earned him the ire of many Aklanon politicians. Colleagues remember that Hinolan even engaged in a heated argument with Lezo Mayor Alfredo Arcenio while on the air, to the point where the two challenged each other to a gunfight.

Hinolan was shot on the night of Nov. 13 2004 upon emerging from a town carnival. The gunman and an accomplice fled the scene on board a motorcycle. A few days later, police achieved a major breakthrough when three witnesses came forward to identify the gunman as Mayor Arcenio himself. The three executed affidavits stating that they saw Arcenio walk behind Hinolan and pull the trigger before jumping onto a bodyguard’s motorcycle. With three witnesses in the bag, authorities thought it was “case closed.”

A few months after the murder, however, one witness after another recanted, contradicting their earlier affidavits. Seven years later, the case is still pending before the Cebu Regional Trial Court. In an interview with the PCIJ, Mayor Arcenio says he never attempted to influence any of the witnesses.

Don’t miss The Herson Hinolan Case: SEE NO EVIL, the second instalment of the five-part series of PCIJ Media Killings this Saturday, November 26, 9.55pm after Front Row on GMA News TV.

JayR, the country's Platinum Prince of Soul has just released his self-produced Christmas album called "Holiday of Love".

"Holiday of Love" may be one of the projects closest to JayR's heart.

Aside from admitting that he is certainly a “Christmas person,” this album features how gifted he is not only as a singer, but also a musician and a music producer.

Holiday of Love was produced by JayR himself for his own Homeworkz label, and distributed by Universal Records.

This album is very special to me, and I am very proud of it,” says JayR. “I hope everyone grabs a copy. I hope you’ll let me be a part of your Holiday of Love.”

Classic Holiday tunes like Holy Night, Do You See What I See?, Give Love on Christmas Day, Sleigh Ride, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, White Christmas, Into (O Christmas Tree), Winter Wonderland, The Christmas Song, This Christmas, Santa Baby, and The Little Drummer Boy are given the updated, R&B, groovy feel.

Wrapping up the entire album are two original songs close to Jay-R’s heart. There’s Spread the Love written by his sister, Jing. But the most special song found in the album is track number 11 intriguingly titled, Tito Remy - the same person cited by Jay-R as the man who inspired the entire project.

He’s a very close Tito sa akin po, uncle ko po,” Jay-R confessed, “he died before the holiday so I wrote him a Christmas song.

After the Holiday Season, JayR is all set to start working on his new album under Universal Records which will further highlight how extremely versatile he is as a singer.

The three had just arrived from a “The Kitchen Musical” road show in Indonesia and Malaysia and were joined by supporting cast members Thou Reyes, Carla Dunareanu, Gayle Nerva, Rebecca Spykerman, Nadiah M. Din, and Erwin Shah Ismail who, like true Asian superstars, wowed the guests as they owned the stage singing TKM versions of the hit songs BOOM BOOM POW and OMG to the delight of their Singaporean producers from The Group Entertainment (TGE), local advertisers, bloggers, as well as select members of the entertainment press.

Also present during the gala night was CheeK, the creator and writer of “The Kitchen Musical” and TGE CEO Nelia Sutrisno and TGE Executive Vice President Christopher James.

Lucky fans from different Asian countries, who joined TKM’s on-air promo, also flew in to Manila and attended the gala.

“Pilipinas Got Talent 3” grand winner Maasinhon Trio, R and B Prince JayR, international YouTube sensation Marie Digby, Zia Quizon, and TKM musical director Gerard Salonga also graced the stage and gave their own rendition of songs inspired from the show.

“The Kitchen Musical” gala night, hosted by “Us Girls” hosts Angel Aquino, Iya Villania, and Megan Young, was co-produced by TGE and its official Philippine free-TV carrier Studio 23, to serve as a thanksgiving to its stakeholders for the overwhelming support and success earned by the multi-million dollar franchise.

Aside from enjoying a wide following among its Asian market, “The Kitchen Musical” will soon be airing on western television. TGE CEO Nelia Sutrisno made the big announcement during the gala that USA’s ABC and Italy’s Casanova Multimedia bought the show’s format and will be remade respectively in their countries.

Arroyo Mug Shot a Violation of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Human Rights

Arroyo Mug Shot a Violation of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Human Rights

Congresswoman Arroyo's mug shot which went viral in social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter is a violation of her human rights according to Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

The lady Senator said that the release of her mug shot is illegal as it violated the former President's right to privacy.

When the mug shot of the accused is taken, could it be a violation of her personal right to privacy if this is published? The answer is yes,” Senator Santiago told reporters.

Senator Santiago also questioned the newspaper and websites that published Arroyo’s mug shot.

It is another question whether a newspaper or a website can publish a mug shot,” she said. “It is not a usual, common photograph. It already suggests guilt on the part of the person. What’s more is that it catches the individual at his most embarrassing moment.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), however, questions the authenticity of the mug shots that made its way to the internet. Chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome said there were discrepancies with the caption of the official mug shots and the published versions.

I would like to state for the record that the published pictures are not the authentic mug shot photos of Rep. Gloria Arroyo,” Bartolome said.

10 Thing You Never Knew About “The Liong King”

10 Thing You Never Knew About “The Liong King”

With Walt Disney Pictures' “The Lion King 3D” about to be released for the first time in theaters, we step back in time to uncover some fun facts and top secrets about the animated blockbuster…

SECRET NUMBER ONE… THE ORIGINAL TITLE OF THE MOVIE WASN’T ‘THE LION KING’

“When I first started work on The Lion King, the movie was called King Of The Jungle,” reveals the film’s producer Don Hahn. “King Of The Jungle was a metaphor for this allegorical story about human behavior. We were thinking about the idea of how it’s a jungle out there and Simba has to exist in this jungle. However, there was no jungle in our story; they’re out on a savannah. Another title we looked into was King Of The Beasts, which made more sense because a lion is the king of beasts – but then we threw that out because we wanted to focus on a simple story about a lion king. At that stage we thought, ‘Why not call it The Lion King?’ The story is about a kid who wants to be king and his uncle frames him for murder, so he grows up in the wilderness and then he has to come back to claim his throne. That’s the whole story, and it’s all about a lion king, so the name stuck.”

SECRET NUMBER TWO… PRIDE ROCK WAS CREATED IN BURBANK!

“We took a trip to Kenya to research the animals and the landscape for the movie,” explains The Lion King co-director Roger Allers. “There wasn’t much time for sketching during the trip because the animals were always very quick, but we did a lot of photo research and we absorbed the feel of the landscape and the weather. In the movie, Pride Lands is modeled after many different areas of Kenya. There are certain things lifted from the landscape around the Samburu District, but we used a variety of inspirations. Many people try to say, “Pride Rock is based on this mountain here.” But they are wrong. An artist in Burbank invented Pride Rock.

SECRET NUMBER THREE… ZAZU WAS ORIGINALLY A SMALLER SPECIES OF BIRD

“In the early stages of development, Zazu was a little, pointy-beaked bird,” reveals co-director Roger Allers. “I can’t remember the exact species, but we decided to change him into something very different after our research trip to Africa. We kept seeing these wonderful hornbill birds hopping around the place and they had so much character. The upward curve of their beak suggested a sense of haughtiness to them; and at the same time they had wonderful feathery legs that looked like they were wearing pajama bottoms. They looked so funny and they had so much personality that we knew Zazu would have to be a hornbill. It really added to his character.”

SECRET NUMBER FOUR… IT TOOK NINE MONTHS TO CONVERT THE MOVIE INTO 3D

“When I first heard that The Lion King was going to be converted into 3D, I wasn’t sure it could be done,” reveals producer Don Hahn. “However, I was blown away by the results. It looks fantastic! All in all, it took about nine months to complete the process. We spent the first three months preparing and testing the shots, followed by six months of actual production work.”

SECRET NUMBER FIVE… THE CREATIVE TEAM BROUGHT REAL LIONS INTO THE ANIMATION STUDIO TO RESEARCH THEIR MOVEMENTS

“When Walt Disney worked on Bambi, he brought a variety of forest animals into the animation studio for research,” reveals The Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff. “The artists could see how the animals looked up close and they could observe how they moved around, so it was a great way to study the wildlife. That inspired us to bring real lions and cubs into the studio to research the animals of The Lion King. A very famous animal expert called Jim Fowler, who was the host of a television show called Mutual Of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, brought the animals in for us. It was very exciting and very informative for all of the animators working on the movie.”

SECRET NUMBER SIX… RAFIKI WAS A VERY DIFFERENT CHARACTER IN EARLY VERSIONS OF THE STORY

“In the early stages of production, the character of Rafiki was very different to the character you see in the finished film,” admits co-director Roger Allers. “In early versions of the story, Rafiki was a serious counselor to the king. He was a very wise man, so we hired the actor Robert Guillaume to do the voice. However, by the time Robert came into record the voice, the character had completely changed. We had come up with the idea of Rafiki being more of a crazy hermit monk. He was now a wacky and mysterious character with a mystical side and a wisdom that shows through occasionally – but a very playful, nutty side too. Robert is a very dignified person and this wasn’t what he had signed up for, so we spent the first recording session trying to find the voice and the laugh of Rafiki. Robert nailed it that day and the rest is history.”

SECRET NUMBER SEVEN… NATHAN LANE AND ERNIE SABELLA ORIGINALLY AUDITIONED FOR THE ROLE OF THE HYENAS

“The casting process for The Lion King was extremely long and very involved,” explains co-director Rob Minkoff. “We went through lots of different ideas for the various roles in the movie, but two of the great successes were Timon and Pumbaa. Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella were performing in a Broadway production of Guys And Dolls in 1992, when The Lion King was being made. They came to an audition in New York and they bumped into each other in the lobby, which is when they discovered they were both auditioning for the roles of hyenas. They asked the casting director if they could audition together and they were hilarious as they read their lines, but they didn’t seem right for the hyenas. That’s when we thought, ‘What if we use them as Timon and Pumbaa?’ It was the perfect fit.”

SECRET NUMBER EIGHT… THE HAKUNA MATATA SONG WASN’T IN THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT

“In the early stages of production, we had a song called He’s Got It All Worked Out in the movie,” reveals co-director Rob Minkoff. “We wanted a fun, bug-eating song because we wanted to convey the idea that Simba is not being a lion when he meets Timon and Pumbaa; he’s giving up his lion ways and he’s moving into this new life away from his home. However, we couldn’t convince everybody that making the entire song about eating bugs was a good idea. Soon after, the research team came back from their trip to Africa with the phrase ‘Hakuna Matata’. We talked about it in a meeting with Tim Rice – and that’s when the idea struck. I remember Tim saying, ‘Hmmm… Hakuna Matata. It’s a bit like Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo.’ A song was born!”

SECRET NUMBER NINE… PUMBAA’S BELLY-RUBBING WAS INSPIRED BY AN ANIMATOR’S WIFE

“My wife was pregnant with our first child during the time I was working on The Lion King,” explains animator Tony Bancroft. “If you watch a pregnant woman –– you’ll notice that they like to rub their bellies. It makes them feel comfortable. It’s appeasing. Well, I used to watch my wife rubbing her belly and it made me think, ‘That would be such a fun element to put into Pumbaa since he’s a big, fat guy.’ When you see Pumbaa lying on his back staring up at the stars in the movie, you’ll notice he does that gesture. I animated that scene and I had him stroking his stomach softly like a pregnant woman because it seemed so natural. It makes him more human and relatable.”

SECRET NUMBER TEN… THE FILMMAKERS ORIGINALLY WANTED CHEECH AND CHONG TO PLAY THE HYENAS IN THE MOVIE

“We had a really tough time finding the right voices for the hyenas in the movie,” reveals co-director Rob Minkoff. “Gary Trousdale, one of the directors of Beauty And The Beast, helped us out in the early stages of development and he created an entire storyboard of the hyenas as if they were played by Cheech and Chong. It was hilarious, but Cheech and Chong weren’t working together at the time, so we knew we wouldn’t be able to book the pair for the roles. Around that same time we heard that Whoopi Goldberg was interested in the film and when we asked her if she’d like to voice a hyena she said, ‘Yeah, great.’ So we got Cheech and Whoopi instead of Cheech and Chong!”

(Opening across the Philippines in December 14, “The Lion King 3D” is distributed locally by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.)

Hugh Laurie, from “House” to “Arthur Christmas”

Hugh Laurie, from “House” to “Arthur Christmas”

Known for possessing a keen eye for the complex characters he creates, actor Hugh Laurie currently brings that talent to his work on the critically acclaimed series, "House" and on Sony Pictures Animation Studio's upcoming 3D holiday adventure “Arthur Christmas.”

The film at last reveals the incredible, never-before-seen answer to every child's question: “So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?” The answer: Santa's exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic – a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero: Santa’s youngest son, Arthur. When this amazing operation misses one child out of hundreds of millions, the least capable Claus embarks on a hilarious, exciting rogue mission against the clock to deliver the last present before Christmas morning dawns.

Hugh Laurie joins the cast as Steve, Santa Claus' eldest son. “Hugh is marvelous as Steve,” says co-screenwriter Sarah Smith. “The character is incredibly cool and slightly in love with himself – the kind of character that just doesn’t quite get it. But Hugh completely gets it, and gave us a beautiful and funny performance.”

Steve isn’t the head of the operation. As part of the Claus family, he plays a subordinate Claus,” says Laurie. “But that is a terrible joke, unforgiveable, and if you use that, I will sue.

Steve is the hereditary heir to the Claus reign. He’s extremely qualified for the job, having introduced high-tech efficiency, military-style precision and the S-1: a mile-wide, invisible sleighship. Steve has dreamed of being Santa all his life; he’s even redesigned the Santa suit into something more akin to Versace than Saint Nick. But Steve might still have a little catching up to do in the heart department.

For Steve, running Christmas is the biggest challenge he could ask for,” says Smith. “It’s like he’s running FedEx, UPS, and an army, all at once. But he’s frustrated, because he can’t take what he sees as his rightful place as Santa Claus.”

Steve takes himself a bit too seriously – he’s sort of laughable at times, because he gets it so wrong,” says Laurie, “But we all do that from time to time. He’s a very confident fellow who has plans for modernizing and updating the operation – he’s looking to run a state-of-the-art Christmas and he’s impatient with the softer, fluffier sides of the holiday. He’s driven to maximize the gift-giving. He might not have all the social skills you’d want in a boss, but he’s just doing things the way he thinks they ought to be done.

Opening across the Philippines in Dec. 08 in 3D and regular cinemas, “Arthur Christmas” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit www.sonypictures.com.ph to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games.
