Former President and now Pampanga Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has been served a warrant of arrest at her hospital bed in St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City on Saturday, November 19 at around 3:30 p.m., for electoral sabotage, which carries a life sentence.

Her husband, former first gentleman Jose Miguel “Mike” Arroyo, several family members and friends of the Arroyos were in the room during the Congresswoman's fingerprints and mugshots booking procedure.

The booking was facilitated by Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit Senior Superintendent Joel Coronel who said that Arroyo's documents will be sent to Camp Crame in Quezon City for processing. He also said the mugshots will be released on the court's discretion.

"She's now under hospital arrest," Coronel added.

Arrest warrants were also served to Andal Sr. and former election officer Lintang Bedol.

On Friday, the Commission on Elections filed electoral sabotage charges at the Pasay City regional trial court against Arroyo, former Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr., and former election supervisor Lintang Bedol for the alleged massive cheating in the Maguindanao polls in 2007.

Based on Republic Act No. 6646, electoral sabotage constitutes altering of votes during an election, tampering numbers on "large scale or in substantial numbers."

The Super 12 kiddie cooks of the “Junior MasterChef Pinoy Edition” were introduced to the public last Wednesday, November 16, via a “Meet and Eat” event where they also prepared dishes for the entertainment press.

"Emotional People’s Needs Will Shape Future of Media. - Gabby Lopez

"Emotional People’s Needs Will Shape Future of Media. - Gabby Lopez

ABS-CBN chairman and CEO Eugenio Lopez III yesterday said the future of media is unknown, but assured that ABS-CBN will remain true to its motto of being “in the service of the Filipino.

I believe it is an honor and privilege to work for a company that puts public service at its center. For me, working at ABS-CBN is not a job. It is a calling,” said Lopez at the closing of his speech at the 22nd Philippine Ad Congress session on the “Future of TV, Future of Media.”

In his speech, Lopez said technology can change the way people consume media but not the human nature to crave for recognition, affirmation, connection, and the inspiration to be the best that they can be.

The future of media would be shaped by people’s needs which at its core is emotional,” he said.

As an example, Lopez said ABS-CBN’s teleseryes can now reach every Filipino in the world via cable, satellite, and Internet protocol TV and even catch up on missed episodes via iWanTV, but it is ABS-CBN’s content that truly lifts the spirits that reflect the people’s joys, pains, values, passions, and dreams.

We all have relatives abroad. Maybe many of them have told you how Filipino dramas on TFC soothe away the pain of hard work and isolation in strange lands,” he said.

Lopez said the huge investments that the company made in technologies would not have succeeded if Filipinos were not burning with patriotism and yearning for redemption.

He cited various examples such as the Pinoy Big Brother being a phenomenal TV hit and the first local TV program to have 26 cameras rolling 24/7 and live streaming on cable TV; Imortal as the country’s first webisodes of a TV series; Boto Mo i-Patrol Mo as the first citizen’s election vigilance campaign using technology; and TFC to be the first to hold a Global Townhall with President Benigno Aquino III in North America.

At present, Lopez said the company is currently in test broadcast for Digital Terrestial Television or DTT that will give clear digital signals and additional channels to people who can’t afford pay TV.

We will invest in enabling technologies, but we will continue leveraging our ability to connect to the emotion,” he said. “In this age of gadgets, we believe that the right buttons to press are those in the hearts of the people.

Lopez said that in the next ad congress, delegates will be talking about media revolutions caused by technologies that are not even viable today, but assured that ABS-CBN will remain “in the service of the Filipino.”

Over many years, we were able to maintain a meaningful relationship with the Filipino audience, being the media company that connects our countrymen all over the globe through all kinds of media platforms,” he said.

Lopez, who leads the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate that is turning 60 next year, told the Ad Congress delegates that he has been in the media business over 25 years and that is all he ever wanted to do.

That is all I am ever going to do. I feel like that NBA player who marvels at getting paid for something he would do for free,” said Lopez, who was applauded by the attending delegates.

Lopez was one of the three media network chairmen who spoke about the future of the media. ABS-CBN anchor Korina Sanchez also appeared in the session, moderating the question and answer portion with the chairman of another network.

Manny V. Pangilinan’s Speech Well Applauded at the 22nd Philippine Ad Congress

Manny V. Pangilinan’s Speech Well Applauded at the 22nd Philippine Ad Congress

TV5 Chairman Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) gave a lively “rockstar” speech at the 22nd Philippine Advertising Congress, which was highlighted by the historic moment of having the three chairmen of the country’s three leading networks on the same stage at the same time.

The presence of the three network chiefs onstage was the event’s showstopper as the delegates hastened to capture the rare moment on camera, but it was the speech given by MVP that drew the most applause and cheers from the enthusiastic audience. With “Change the Game” as the AdCon22 battlecry, MVP was able to expound on the event’s theme by sharing the game-changing innovations being ushered by his multimedia conglomerate (which includes TV5, PLDT, Smart, Cignal Digital Cable, among others) - and he did so in a very candid and engaging manner, to the delight of the audience.

MVP’s speech centered on the three key messages of consumer empowerment, the empowerment of content generators, and how advertising “could adjust to the realities of future media as you see it”.

The Twitterverse was also very much alive with tweets from impressed delegates and viewers (those who watched the event’s TV and online coverage) during MVP’s speech. As the TV5 chairman talked about the impending “digital tsunami” and how he wants to greet it with “d2 na me”, eager tweeters couldn’t help but be amazed at how such a genius could be so “humble and innovative”.

Twitter user @veg2go commented “Kudos to the Big 3 for inspiring us but personally dig MVP’s. Candid and straight jabs. #AdCon22 #MVP” while @iamrainramos said “I love MVP and the way he answers the questions thrown by his colleagues. TV5 should be proud. They’re in good hands. #AdCon22”.

Clearly, MVP was able to connect with the young generation as he gave an example of how a typical youth today would rely so much on digital technology and the Internet in his day-to-day life. He gave a highly informative and enlightening speech, and it made it all the more evident why all businesses he handles eventually become No.1.

GMA Network Stays In Tune with the Beat of Technology Drum

GMA Network Stays In Tune with the Beat of Technology Drum

Today’s leading Philippine multimedia conglomerate GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) stays in tune with the beat of the technology drum.

This is according to GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon in his address on the “The Future of Television” delivered to around 4,000 participants at the 22nd Philippine Advertising Congress held at the CamSur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Camarines Sur.

Gozon said that television giant GMA has gone to great lengths to intermarry new and traditional media in its broadcast operations. Beyond sign-off schedule, GMA had found means to hook up with its audience. The connection is now 24/7.

He explained, “the new mission of media in the digital age is to engage viewers and make them active participants.” For instance, GMA’s online citizen journalism YouScoop has helped the Network deliver the news “as it happens, when it happens.”

But amid heightened subscription to evolving media such as digital and mobile, Gozon said that “television will still be the medium to beat for many years to come.” He said that television, the most pervasive and most ubiquitous of all media, is critical in people empowerment through information.

With television consumption rate in the Philippines increasing from 97% in 2007 to 98% in 2011 according to global media research company Synovate, television remains the most effective platform to deliver news and entertainment. In fact, it is the cheapest form of entertainment for 94% of households in the country.

Gozon emphasized that television’s continued success is driven by quality content – a non-negotiable in the television business and the key dimension that defines the daily drill in the Kapuso Network.

Guided by the mantra of delivering only quality program content and unrelenting Serbisyong Totoo, GMA raised the bar of programming with trailblazing programs such as Amaya, Munting Heredera and flagship newscast 24 Oras, among others, on primetime.

The self-imposed standard of delivering quality content also resulted into another alternative local all-news channel from GMA – GMA News TV (GNTV), now the number one news channel in the country.

Gozon said that GMA will continue to reinvent television, and turn the challenges stemming from digitization into opportunities. He said that GMA will “continue to harness new technologies not only to keep consumers watching the GMA programs, but have them stay through commercials in between.”

Gozon is credited with steering GMA towards being the number one television station in the country today in both ratings and profits and is consistently listed as among BizNews Asia’s Power 100 from 2003 to 2010. Last year, he earned the distinction of being the only Filipino to be selected as a member of the Advisory Board for the Asian Television Awards.

Claudine Barretto and Dennis Trillo, Together Again

Dramatic actors Claudine Barretto and Dennis Trillo seem to have enjoyed their previous stint in GMA-7’s “Spooky Nights”. This Saturday, November 19, they return to the show for its next hardcore horror feature titled “Kalaro”.

With Munting Heredera child stars Mona Louise Rey and Migs Cuaderno, “Kalaro” presents a story about a father who wants to win the approval of his son after his marriage breaks up. Further complicating things between them are two ghosts wanting to take them to the after life by causing their death.

While his wife is on a vacation abroad, Chris (Dennis) finally has a chance to bond with his son, Clark (Migs). However, it seems that only Chris enjoys their current setup because the boy hates him and his new home – a unit on the sixth floor of a strange condominium.

Clark is bored because, aside from the fact that he is staying with his dad, there seems to be no other kids on the sixth floor. Thus, he gets excited and happy when he meets Ena (Mona), a girl who lives in the unit beside theirs. Instantly, the two kids become playmates.

Meanwhile, Chris started experiencing weird things in his condo unit ever since he met Ena’s mother, Lara (Claudine). He has also been seeing horrifying visions – like Clark becoming a corpse and the water in the bathtub turns to blood.

Await this scary and heartbreaking story presented by Director Uro Q. Dela Cruz and Headwriter Senedy Que.

For their first task, the 3G’s composed of Pretty Miss Perfect, Sexy Single Mommy, and Independent Woman should charm their way into being official housemates.

To help them succeed, Kuya assigned Slater, the first housemate to be nominated for eviction, to convince his fellow male housemates to accept the 3G’s as official housemates and in exchange, choose one current female housemate to be evicted.

Will Slater finally succeed in this new challenge or back out and face forced eviction?

The “PBB UnliDay” housemates will also welcome this week the Power Strangers namely Astiging Kengkoy, Pilyong Rakitero, and Poging Petics. What will their special tasks be?

Meanwhile, four “PBB UnliDay” housemates faced punishment for violating some of the PBB house rules.

Seiichi was forced to communicate with his housemates using a puppet for failing to use his lapel microphone at one instance, while Pamu was made to strap herself onto a gurney due to oversleeping and ignoring three wake-up calls.

For using hand signals, Unad and Lordwin were required to wear two jackets conjoined back-to-back.

Watch “Pinoy Big Brother UnliNight” with Toni Gonzaga weeknights after “My Binondo Girl” in Primetime Bida and “Pinoy Big Brother UnliDay” with Bianca Gonzalez weekdays before “Reputasyon” in Kapamilya Gold. Also stay tuned to “PBB Unlimited Updates” with Robi Domingo during “Kapamilya Blockbusters” and “100 Days to Heaven” on ABS-CBN.

‘PS I Love You’ Returns as TV5 Primetime Dramaserye

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

The love story that charmed fans in the ‘80s returns not on the silverscreen but on TV.

PS I Love You, the movie that further pinned Gabby Concepcion and Sharon Cuneta to stardom, is given new life as it premieres as TV5’s newest primetime dramaserye on November 21.

TV5’s PS I Love You is a sequel to the original ‘80s movie. Mark (Gabby Concepcion) and Kristine (now portrayed by Dina Bonnevie) didn’t have a happy ending to their love story after all, and they now live separate lives with families of their own. What they thought was their greatest love was left behind. But as fate would have it, their paths would cross again and the memories they wish to bury resurface.

The dramaserye takes off from Mark and Kristine’s supposed wedding day, where the latter doesn’t show up. Mark finds out later that Kristine accepted the marriage proposal of a wealthy businessman.

Mark tries to move on from his sad fate and works his way to become a billionaire investment banker. Kristine, on the other hand, is happily married with two kids, but her picture-perfect life crumbles upon the death of her husband. As their businesses dwindle and their family stands on the brink of bankruptcy, Kristine’s daughter Andrea (Alex Gonzaga) steps up to save their remaining livelihood. Despite the tremendous responsibility she has to bear for her family, she derives motivation and inspiration from Jason (Kean Cipriano), a struggling musician who loves her with all his heart.

Upon the advice of their relatives, Andrea decides to sell their company to an investor who would be interested in resuscitating the business. Unknown to Andrea, the man interested in buying their company is Mark, an old flame of her mother and her one great love.

This starts another chapter in the lives of Mark and Kristine. As love blossoms between their children – Mark’s son Paul (AJ Muhlach) and Kristine’s other daughter Candice (Nadine Lustre) – they move heaven and earth to keep them apart. However, Paul and Candice struggle to fight for the love despite all odds.

Completing the cast of PS I Love You are Candy Pangilinan, Cheska Inigo, Michael Flores, Say Alonzo, Jaycee Parker, Melissa Mendez, Nikki Bacolod, Al Chris Galura, Sarah Polvereni and Cogie Domingo, with the special participation of Lloyd Samartino.

Directed by Robert Quebral and Elaine Lozano, PS I Love You is co-produced by TV5 and Viva TV. It airs Monday to Friday after Glamorosa starting November 21 on TV5.

UST Releases Statement on the Anne Curtis vs GMA-7 Staff USTv Incident

After Kapamilya actress Anne Curtis expressed her sentiments on Twitter (read related news HERE) and the official statements released by both ABS-CBN (read HERE) and GMA-7 (read HERE) related to the USTv incidents where Anne was allegedly prevented by GMA-7 staff to perform or even greeted the Thomasians during the 2011 USTv Awards Kick-off party due to schedule issue, organizers of the USTv Students’ Choice Awards finally released a statement clarifying the conflict in the performance schedules between Anne Curtis and the Kapuso stars.

Here is the official statement sent by the Office of the Secretary General of the University of Santo Tomas (UST):

The University of Santo Tomas, together with all its students, deeply appreciate the enthusiastic participation of the television networks during the 8th USTv Students’ Choice Awards Kick Off Party held on 10 November 2011 at the Plaza Mayor of the university. We especially thank the celebrities from different television networks who generously took time out of their hectic schedules to join the Kick Off Party.

The event featured a program with a pre-determined sequence aimed at giving all the celebrities in attendance ample time to meet or to perform before the Thomasian audience. Since the TV networks normally cannot declare the exact number of talents who would be able to come, last minute adjustments were inevitable, subject, however, to mutual agreement of the concerned parties.

We regret any misunderstanding or confusion that may have occurred unintentionally and caused inconvenience to some. We pray and hope that all parties can move on and continue with our common commitment of promoting positive values in the mass media. After all, it is for this that the USTv Students’ Choice Awards came into being.

Vilma Santos, Coco Martin and Jake Cuenca Join "100 Days to Heaven: A Heavenly Finale" this Friday

Is it “mission accomplished” for Madam Anna?

ABS-CBN’s top-rating Primetime Bida drama series “100 Days to Heaven” was once again the talk of the town as it recently trended worldwide on Twitter with the non-stop intense scenes and revelations on its last week dubbed as “100 Days to Heaven: A Heavenly Finale.”

Aside from following the happenings in the lives of Madam Anna Manalastas (Coney Reyes/Xyriel Manabat) and daughter Sophia (Jodi Sta. Maria), loyal viewers are hooked in the finale week to watch out for the guest appearance of some of the biggest Kapamilya stars which recently included Jake Cuenca as the young ‘Tagasundo,’ Coco Martin as the young ‘Tagabantay,’ and Governor Vilma Santos as ‘Tagabantay.’

When asked about her guesting, Santos said nothing but praises for the show. She said, “We all know that many people are watching the show that’s why I consider it a great honor to be a part of it, plus the fact that I got to work with my good friend, Coney Reyes.”

The Star for All Seasons also shared that like all the loyal viewers of “100 Days to Heaven,” she was also deeply touched with Madam Anna’s journey. “I salute the program for all the good values it presents. It has taught viewers the importance of being good to others and that it is never too late to change for the better and ask for forgiveness from those we have offended,” Santos said.

Meanwhile, the whole cast and production team of “100 Days to Heaven” are thankful for the public’s full support to show which aired for six months. On her Twitter account, Reyes constantly expresses her gratitude to the show’s followers. She tweeted, “We hope that everyone will be a part of our journey from the beginning to end. Thank you very much for all the support!

After all her efforts, is it really ‘mission accomplished’ for Anna? Was she really able to correct all that she had done wrong? Will the gates of heaven open for her or will she be brought into the clutches of hell?

Don’t dare miss the final judgment on “100 Days to Heaven: A Heavenly Finale,” weeknights after “TV Patrol” on ABS-CBN. For more updates, log on to, follow @100daystoheaven on Twitter, and ‘like’

Kuya Kim Atienza, Karylle and Biggest Loser Gang Lead ’11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River’

“Matanglawin” anchor Kuya Kim Atienza, singer-actress Karylle, and Pinoy Biggest Loser grand winner Larry Martin along with other Kapamilya stars are set to join thousands of Filipinos to break the Guinness World Record of last year’s eco-foot race in the “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” this Sunday, November 20.

“We are going to hit big numbers,” said Monchet Olives, the ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI)’s chief strategic officer.

Larry will run the 10K race, while Pinoy Biggest Loser contestants Angela Lupango, Hazel Chua, Raffy Tan, Art Mendoza, Andy Gomez de Liano, Leigh Villegas, Joy Siy, and Eboy Bautista are going for 5K.

“We’re asking people to go out and be healthy on that day,” said Eric Imperio, the 11.20.2011’s overall race director.

AFI managing director Gina Lopez will also join the fun run, which aims to raise funds for the initial rehabilitation of Estero de San Miguel as part of the seven-year program to clean up the Pasig River.

The Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig’s strategy is to clean up the esteros that drain into the Pasig River. In 2010, the KBPIP organized the world-record breaking 10.10.10 run to raise consciousness for the rehabilitation of the river and its tributaries, particularly the rehabilitation of Estero de Paco, a 2.9-kilometer tributary of the Pasig River in Manila.

Lopez will join other business executives in the charity run, namely ABS-CBN Corporation president Eugenio Lopez III, Ayala Corporation president Fernando Zobel de Ayala, Alaska Milk Corporation president Fred Uytengsu and ABS-CBN Cable Channels and Print Media Group head Ernie Lopez who will all participate in the 21K charity run.

Surprise appearances by other Kapamilya stars await the running enthusiasts for the pre- and post-race programs.

Aside from actually running on the event day, other Kapamilya celebrities such as Anne Curtis, Jodi Sta. Maria, Ces Drilon and TJ Manotoc have helped the “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” by retweeting @run4pasigriver announcements.

Meanwhile, the advocacy run’s organizers have decided to abandon the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) to count the number of runners because of cost and reliability concerns. Instead, an independent auditing firm SyCip, Gorres & Velayo (SGV) will be managing 360 counters stationed on chutes near the finish line.

To accommodate all the expected runners on the race day, the SM Mall of Asia will be open for 48 hours from Saturday to Sunday, November 19 to November 20.

Compared to last year’s run, this year’s assembly time will start earlier at 3 am, while the 3K, 5K, and 10K races will start at exactly 4:45 am to regain normal traffic on Roxas Boulevard by 8 am.

Martin Aguda, head of ABS-CBN Safety and overall head of security and safety for the 11.20.2011 run, advised non-participants to avoid the race routes because heavy traffic is expected.

The “11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River” has 3K, 5K and 10K categories. The registration fees are P300 for 3K and 5K and P450 for 10K. Students can pay P150 for their registration fees for 3K and 5K if they present their valid identification cards.

The monumental 10.10.10 fun run last year broke the Guinness World record of 110,000 previously held by the 1988 “Bay to Breakers” race in San Francisco, USA. KBPIP used the P12 million raised for the cleaning operations on the esteros behind the Malacañang Palace, which flow into the Pasig River.

Participants of the Run for The Pasig River may also avail the cause’s limited-edition merchandise, which are now available in selected shops such as in SM North Edsa (2nd floor, main bldg), SM Megamall (lower ground floor, bldg. A), SM Mall of Asia (ground floor, main mall), ABS-CBN Store (ELJ bldg), R.O.X (Bonifacio High Street), The Athlete’s Foot (Glorietta 3) and ABS-CBN online store

TV5 International Successfully Launches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Pilipinas Global Network Limited (PGNL), TV5’s international arm, officially launched in the Middle East via a 3-day event dubbed “Give Me 5, Kapatid.”

Held last November 3-5 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the events were made possible with the help of its partner, Orbit Showtime Network (OSN).

“Give Me 5, Kapatid” kicked off on November 3 with a press conference and a luncheon at the Sky Lounge of Gloria Hotel in Dubai. TV5 President and CEO Atty. Ray Espinosa and PGNL President Claro Carmelo Ramirez were joined by chosen community leaders and members of the local press. Kapatid star Ruffa Gutierrez and comedian Shalala were also present during the said press conference.

The following day, the group took off to Abu Dhabi for a whole day of celebration. Shalala and Pinoy Explorer Aga Muhlach prepared a special presentation for Filipinos living in the area. This grand Fans Day brought enjoyment and happiness to Kapatids yearning for Pinoy entertainment.

Side A band also performed that evening, much to the delight of the 4,000 Filipinos who attended the event. Everyone sang along to Side A’s hits, turning the venue into a videoke bar. Aga once again put out a “concert artist” performance during his portion. The lovable actor/host brought out his musical talent by gamely dancing and singing with each song. Ruffa Gutierrez then came on stage, looking breathtakingly beautiful in her Cary Santiago gown.

The former beauty queen introduced TV5’s Corporate Social Responsibility campaign. TV5 and OSN are committed to helping out distressed Filipinos in the UAE. Through “Give Me 5, Kapatid,” OFWs are encouraged to donate money to help out their fellow Filipinos in the region. The total donation amount will be matched or doubled by TV5 and OSN and will then be given to the Philippine embassy in UAE, headed by Ambassador Grace Princesa who also graciously attended the event. The money collected during the campaign will be used to buy airline tickets for chosen kababayans, giving them a chance to return to the Philippines to be with their families this coming Christmas.

Aside from a Fans Day, the crew of Pinoy Explorer also shot new episodes in Dubai and Abu Dhabi which will air soon on Aksyon TV International.
Talentadong Pinoy also held a special international audition last November 5 at the Boracay Club of the Asiana Hotel in Dubai. The chosen Talentados will fly back to Manila to join other chosen Filipino contestants from all over the world for a special international episode of the hit talent show.

“Give Me 5, Kapatid” in the Middle East is in line with the network’s commitment to not only provide quality entertainment but to reach out and connect overseas Filipinos to their loved ones in the Philippines . With the success of “Give Me 5, Kapatid,” Filipinos living abroad can expect similar events to come their way as TV5 continues to expand worldwide.

ABS-CBN Nets Close to P1-B for the 1st Quarter of 2011 Despite the Absence of Election Related Advertisements

The consolidated net income of ABS-CBN Corporation, the country’s largest multimedia conglomerate, registered P976 million for the first three months of the year ending March 31, 2011.

ABS-CBN delivered consolidated revenues of P6.6 billion from advertising and consumer sales, a 15% decline compared to a year ago. Less the revenues from political advocacies and advertisement from the first quarter of 2010, consolidated revenues in the first quarter of 2011 increased by 3% year-on-year.

ABS-CBN’s advertising revenues declined 21% or P1.0 billion to reach P4.0 billion. Minus the revenues from political advocacies and advertisement in the first quarter of 2010, advertising revenues in the first quarter of 2011 increased by 10% year-on-year. This increase is attributable to the rise in total advertising minutes sold and programmed rate increase that took effect in February 2011.

Consumer sales for the first quarter of 2011 amounted to P2.5 billion, posting a 5% decrease or P147 million less from a year ago, mainly from ABS-CBN Global. ABS-CBN Global revenues declined by 15% year on year in peso terms due to the decline in subscribers and the appreciation of the Philippine peso against the US dollar. Meanwhile, Sky Cable continues to contribute positively with revenues increasing by 6% to P1.0 billion. This is mostly driven by the increased take up of its broadband service subscriptions which increased by 31% year-on-year.

Total expenses declined by P721 million or 13% year-on-year to P4.7 billion partly due to the lower cost of sales and services and general and administrative expenses (GAEX).

Net income attributable to shareholders for the first quarter of 2011 is at P976 million, inclusive of the gain on sale of Sky Cable Philippine Depositary Receipts (PDRs), a 10% decline year-on-year. Removing the effects of this one-time gain in the first quarter of 2011 and P1.40 billion revenues generated from political advocacies and political advertisement in the first quarter of 2010, net income would have increased by 12% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) hit P2.1 billion, a 14% decline year-on-year. Stripping the one-time gain in the first quarter of 2011 and equally shaving the P1.40 billion revenues generated from political advocacies and political advertisement in the first quarter of 2010, EBITDA would have grown by 6% year-on-year.

Capital expenditure and film and program rights acquisition for the first quarter of 2011 amounted to P886 million, P400 million or 82% higher than the level of spending from previous year. These are all programmed expenditures to increase the company’s capacity to produce additional shows.

ABS-CBN maintained its national audience share and ratings leadership with prime-time audience share averaging 41% in the first quarter of 2011, going by Kantar Media National TV Ratings’ figures.

For the period January to March 2011, all six of ABS-CBN’s primetime week-day shows were in the Top 6: the Top 6: Emil Cruz Jr.’s Mara Clara, Pablo S. Gomez’s Mutya, Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin, Noah, TV Patrol and Imortal. The same trend was repeated in the week-end where ABS-CBN’s primetime week-end shows also dominated the top programs: Pilipinas Got Talent (Saturday and Sunday edition), Wansapanataym : Ulo, Kokak, Family Tree, and Buhawi Jack, Maalaala Mo Kaya, Rated K Handa Na Ba Kayo?, and Goin’ Bulilit.

Primetime programs launched in the first quarter of 2011 - Mutya and Pilipinas Got Talent - enjoyed national program ratings in the 30s, and audience share in the high 40s.

ABS-CBN Global’s overall viewer count decreased by 3% year-on-year, driven by the decline in subscriber growth in the Middle East, Europe and Japan. Double digit subscriber growth continued to be experienced in Canada, and mid-to-high single digit subscriber growth in Asia-Pacific and Australia.

ABS-CBN Film Productions, Inc. released five films in the first three months of this year, two more than the same period in 2010. Three of them – Ang Tanging Ina Mo Last Na To, Dalaw and Catch Me I’m in Love – topped P100 million in box office receipts, earning blockbuster status by local standards.
