The Timekeepers and Minutemen of ‘In Time’

Posted by JED on , under | comments (2)

It’s a race against time for two young fugitives in a society where time is the currency and there is never enough of it in the philosophical action thriller “In Time.”

Starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried with Olivia Wilde, Cillian Murphy and Alex Pettyfer, “In Time” clocks in a world where which people stop aging at 25. From that point onward they have to buy, borrow or steal time in order to stay alive. Every second counts. For the poor like Timberlake’s Will Salas, life is a constant struggle for survival, while the wealthy have enough time to live forever.

Falsely accused of murder and on the run, Will (Timberlake) meets the rich and beautiful Sylvia (Seyfried). Together the charismatic pair is trying to bring down the corrupt system. The world created by director Andrew Niccol in “In Time” is corrupt and unjust. For the poor it is a daily battle to acquire enough time to stay alive. The rich on the other hand have centuries and can potentially live forever. There is a yawning gap between the haves and have-nots.

Sylvia and Will are running for their lives – not just to find enough time to make it through another day, but from the Timekeepers out to capture the fugitive duo. “Timekeepers keep the system running; they actually keep time,” says Niccol. “And our principal antagonist, Timekeeper Leon, is not really a villain. He is just a bureaucrat, an authority figure who has allegiance to no one, rich or poor. His only allegiance is to minutes and seconds. He believes (or has to believe) that you are either working for the system, or you need to be eliminated.”

For the role of the Timekeeper Leon the filmmakers cast another “old soul,” Cillian Murphy. Murphy acknowledges the circumstances of his character – “he’s a cop charged with keeping this system going” – but the actor finds the deeper layers of Leon more compelling to play: “What’s great about the character is that he is a contradiction, because he’s actually from that same ghetto where Will lives. Deep down, he knows that it’s a corrupt system, and yet he’s decided to accept that and pursue his goal of keeping time. He’s a very kinetic and focused character, and for him it’s just about constantly moving forward. I think he’s suppressed all of his past. What I liked about the writing is that Will and Leon, they’re the flip side of each other. It’s just different paths having been taken. This is the path he’s chosen, and he suppresses all of the misgivings and issues he has with this system. He’s tried to leave them behind over the course of his life.”

As with the classic archetypal chase – the hunter and the hunted – so beautifully realized in, for example, The Fugitive, a bond forms as the chase quickens. Murphy adds, “Not only does Leon realize he’s from the same side of the tracks as Will, but there is a sense of history; Leon knew Will’s father. I think over the course of the story, they gain a respect for each other.”

Part of the menace of Dayton, apart from the possibility of timing out should one not amass a day’s wages, is the presence of Minute Men, who are thieves out to steal time. Alex Pettyfer portrays Fortis, the leader of the Minute Men – a refined 75-year-old psychopath (who of course looks 25). “Because of the character’s age, he’s quite articulate,” says Niccol. “He has more sophisticated taste in clothing than a younger man would have. That makes him seem different from the younger characters.”

Pettyfer offers, “Fortis is a bruiser, though not without a certain elegance. And he’s just a complete psycho, and crazy-hungry for time. I think the scariest thing about him is that he feels he has nothing to lose. He just doesn’t care. He’s just now gone completely insane and is on a rampage for more time.”

The actor enjoyed his trip to the dark side, finding it a liberating experience: “You can’t do everything you want playing a villain, but you have room to create. And I think that’s the most attractive thing about playing a character like Fortis; it’s that you can build so many layers with him.”

Riveting action thriller “In Time” opens October 28 in cinemas from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Sam Milby – Hindi Kita Iiwan (Music Video and Lyrics)

Umiiyak ka na naman mahal
Lagi na lang ika'y nasasaktan
Sabi niya
Di ka iiwanan
Ikaw ay nabigo
Kayo'y nagkalayo

Ako'y nahihirapan
Pag ika'y nasasaktan

Mario Maurer to Headline Philippine Fashion Week

Local apparel brand Penshoppe recently confirmed that for their Philippine Fashion Week show to be held on October 29, 2011 at SMX, Thai superstar Mario Maurer has agreed to strut the runway as the show’s final reveal.

This latest development was confirmed by Penshoppe Brand Director Alex Mendoza who said, “Our theme for Fashion Week aptly called INVASION represents the thrilling new changes happening to the brand on its 25th year and we are very excited to see a massive Asian star like Mario Maurer close the show for us.”

This October, Mario Maurer is set to arrive in Manila as the latest endorser of Penshoppe. Following the brand’s highly successful series of top trending international campaigns, Maurer’s selection after British actor Ed Westwick of the popular series Gossip Girl marks the arrival of the local apparel group as a force to be reckoned with not only in the local circles but also in the international market.

Ed Westwick for Penshoppe opened a lot of doors for us. Now Mario will not only make Penshoppe a bigger fashion name in the Philippines - he will also help grow the market in Southeast Asia, especially knowing that he has gained a wide following among the regional fans,” explains Mendoza.

While Ed represents the international jet set, Mario will represent a wider audience composed of the younger set.

Meanwhile, the Philippines’ leading broadcast network ABS CBN has been awarded the exclusive rights to air the highly anticipated Philippines visit of the Thai heartthrob. Among the films that boosted Maurer’s name to public consciousness was The Love of Siam released in 2007. He also starred in the sleeper hit Crazy Little Thing Called Love that surprisingly gave ABS CBN high ratings during its premiere on local television.

Warner Bros. debuts the international character posters of its upcoming action-adventure “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the follow-up to the 2010 smash hit “Sherlock Holmes.”

Also joining the cast, in her first English-speaking role, is Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who gained international attention in the Swedish film “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.” Stephen Fry (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”) plays Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock’s older brother.

Cannes Winner “Drive” Will be Shown in Manila Soon

Posted by JED on Thursday, October 13, 2011 , under | comments (1)

Winner of the Best Director award in this year's Cannes Film Festival, FilmDistrict's critically acclaimed thriller “Drive” starring Ryan Gosling will be shown soon exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3). The film is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and adapted from James Sallis's 2005 novel of the same name.

In the film, Driver (Gosling) is a Los Angeles wheelman for hire, stunt driving for movie productions by day and steering getaway vehicles for armed heists by night. Though a loner by nature, Driver can't help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a vulnerable young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband Standard (Oscar Isaac).

Producer Adam Siegel felt the driver was a rare character – someone who has a purpose, excels at one thing and makes no apologies for it. Producer Marc Platt agreed, noting that the driver reminded him of heroes and movie characters similar to characters Clint Eastwood used to portray.

"I was very taken with this little crime story that James Sallis wrote,” Platt adds. “I felt that the way the world was presented in the book demanded that its true grit be retained in the script. The grit comes from seeing the world from the point of view of Driver in the car. It’s those elements that I felt were critical to retain to make this film a very unique cinematic experience."

Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Hossein Amini adapted the novel for the screen. He felt it was a rare book to receive from a studio because it was short, gloomy and like a poem. Because the novel does not present a linear story but has many flashbacks and jumps around in time, Amini found the adaptation challenging. He felt the non-linear structure made it "a very tricky structure" for a feature film.

“Drive” premiered on May 20, in competition at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. At its first showing to the media, it received abundant praise and received "some of the best responses of the festival.” It was greeted with hoots and howls of joy from the media, with viewers cheering some of the scenes featuring extreme violence. “Drive” also received a 15 minute standing ovation from the crowd.

Likely, it served as a welcome relief to the press with previously serious-dramatic projects being shown earlier. Xan Brooks of The Guardian called the film his guilty pleasure of the 2011 competition, labeling it an enjoyable affair. "Over the past 10 days we've witnessed great art and potent social commentary; the birth of the cosmos and the end of the world. Turns out what we really wanted all along was a scene in which a man gets his head stomped in a lift. They welcome it in like a long-lost relation", he wrote. The festival named Refn best director for “Drive.”

Sneak Peek: Straw Dogs

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Columbia Pictures presents the frightening suspense thriller “Straw Dogs” starring James Marsden, Kate Bosworth, Alexander Skarsgård, Dominic Purcell and James Woods.

Directed by and screenplay by Rod Lurie, the film is based on the 1971 movie of the same title written by David Zelag Goodman and Sam Peckinpah who adapted the novel “The Siege of Trencher’s Farm” by Gordon Williams.

When everything you’ve lived for is under siege, what would you do? How far would you go?

It’s a question made terrifyingly apparent to Hollywood screenwriter David Sumner (Marsden) and his actress wife Amy (Bosworth) when they move to her small hometown in the Deep South after her father’s death. Smiling faces, warm welcomes and what were once comfortable old relationships take on a sinister tinge for David and Amy, who find themselves driven to a crisis-laden brink.

The suspenseful, gut-wrenching and intensely cathartic new version brings the original story to the present-day American South, and sets it against a backdrop of small town life where everyone knows too much about each other, the town hierarchy is determined by your place within the ranks of the high school football team and the performance of the football team at Friday night’s game determines the fates of many.

David and Amy’s plan is to prepare for sale the family home, which has fallen into disrepair, and for David to take advantage of the quiet and solitude to complete the screenplay he’s working on.
But all is not as bucolic as it seems in Blackwater, Mississippi, and the arrival of the Sumners stirs up long-dormant resentments and suspicious actions. Once there, Amy slips back into being the hometown celebrity, which leaves David feeling out of touch with his wife and questioning her behavior.

Meanwhile, tensions build in their marriage and old conflicts re-emerge with the locals, most notably with Amy’s ex-boyfriend Charlie (Skarsgård), who, along with his fellow former football teammates Bic (Drew Powell), Norman (Rhys Coiro) and Chris (Billy Lush) push the limits of David’s tolerance and the Sumners’ marriage, forcing them to re-evaluate each other and their relationship.

When the daughter of the former football coach Tom Heddon (Woods) goes missing, her father takes the law into his own hands, enlisting Charlie and his boys to help him search for her and setting into motion a series of events that ultimately leads to an explosively violent confrontation, escalating to a shocking, catastrophic climax that will shatter the lives of everyone involved.

Opening soon across the Philippines, “Straw Dogs” is distributed by Columbia Pictures, local office of Sony Pictures Releasing International. Visit to see the latest trailers, get free downloads and play free movie games. Like us at and join our fan contests.

Meet the Characters of ‘Winnie the Pooh The Movie’

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Winnie the Pooh and his friends from the Hundred Acre Wood are among the most entertaining and beloved characters ever animated by Disney,” says John Lasseter, executive producer of the new animated feature, “Winnie the Pooh.”

The film will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3) starting October 19.

Literally borrowing a few pages from the great award-winning theatrical shorts of the 1960s that were created by Walt Disney and his team of legendary animators and storytellers, our directors, Don Hall and Steve Anderson, have done a fantastic job telling a fun and emotional new story,” Lasseter continues. “It’s a true joy to see these characters back on the big screen, and I know it will appeal to the child in everyone.

WINNIE THE POOH (voice of Jim Cummings) is a self-described “bear of very little brain,” but the lovable bear who’s stuffed with fluff has an uncommon, clear-eyed philosophy that’s admired worldwide. “There’s a wisdom to Winnie the Pooh that comes through in a very subtle way,” says producer Peter Del Vecho. “It’s about enjoying friends, enjoying family, enjoying life. It returns us to a simpler time.”

Pooh is a loyal friend to his neighbors in Hundred Acre Wood. He’s always willing to lend a helping paw - and he’s more than happy to share a jar of honey with anyone who’s interested. Indeed, Winnie the Pooh has an endless craving for honey or a smackerel of whatever is at hand to soothe that insatiable “rumbly in his tumbly.”

PIGLET (voice of Travis Oates) is a soft-spoken and skittish little fellow whose generosity and humility far outweigh his meager size. His fastidious movements, anxious wringing of his hands and adorable stutter - “Oh d-d-d-dear” - convey his nervousness and fear of the unknown. “The wonderful thing about Piglet is he’s frightened of everything and yet he still goes out and faces the world alongside his friends,” says Travis Oates, who provides the voice of Piglet.

TIGGER (voice of Jim Cummings) is an exuberant, one-of-a-kind creature with the famously springy tail. He acts on every impulse, and his boisterous manner often leads him to leap before he looks. Tigger’s bouncing is a pure expression of his utter zest for life—a joy he’s always eager to share with his friends.

Tigger’s unique personality extends to his original use of language, which often results in his trademark twists of phrase and malapropisms. Says Tigger to Eeyore: “We just need to get you Tiggerized!”

EEYORE (voice of Bud Luckey) is everyone’s favorite delightfully dismal donkey. But Eeyore doesn’t see himself as gloomy - he just has low expectations. He’d likely be shocked - and perhaps somewhat disappointed - to learn that he takes center stage in the new film. According to supervising animator Randy Haycock, “Eeyore actually plays a pretty significant role in this movie, maybe more significant than any of the other films, because the central storyline revolves around the fact that he’s lost his tail and everybody’s trying to help him find a new tail.”

OWL (voice of Craig Ferguson). Everyone knows that owls are the wisest of all creatures, and Owl knows everything - at least, he thinks he does, even if his information (and his spelling!) often turns out to be not quite right. Although Owl can be a know-it-all, he does want to help his friends. But it’s his effort to help that often stirs up trouble in the Hundred Acre Wood, and Owl stirs it up better than ever in this new adventure.

RABBIT (voice of Tom Kenny) is perhaps the smartest of the Hundred Acre Wood friends (at least he thinks so), and is often the self-appointed leader of the group. “If I had to pick one word to describe Rabbit,” says Tom Kenny (who’s also the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants), “I’d say he’s a ‘fussbudget’—he’s very fussy, organized, he likes his garden a certain way, he likes his house a certain way, he doesn’t like unexpected visitors - people just showing up at his door throws off his routine and he’s all about routine.”

KANGA (voice of Kristen Anderson-Lopez) - Mom to Roo - is a warm, protective kangaroo. She certainly has her hands (and pouch) full with young Roo, but she manages him with love and patience.

ROO (voice of Wyatt Hall) is a wild young adventurer who wants to go everywhere and try everything. No matter the situation - or his mother’s objections - Roo throws himself right in the middle of all the action. Sometimes Kanga’s over-protective mothering tries Roo’s patience, but in the end there’s no place better than being cuddled in his mama’s pouch.

Jennylyn Mercado and Luis Manzano Now Call Each Other 'Love'

Although they consistently deny that they're already in a relationship, Luis Manzano and Jennylyn Mercado, however, admitted that they now call each other “love.”

When asked why they chose that particular term of endearment, Luis Manzano said, “Napakaespesyal niya (Jennylyn) sa puso ko, so why not 'love'?

Meanwhile, when they were asked to clarify the real status of their relationship, the two reiterated that they are just good friends.

However, Luis didn’t deny that he is actually looking into something more than friendship with Jennylyn.

"Ano niya talaga ako, kapit, yakap-yakap niya talaga ako.

"Tapos yung, parang, hindi naman sila masyadong... Basta parang gano'n siya kaalaga, sobrang alaga niya."

Vice Ganda - Palong Palo (Music Video and Lyrics)

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Nanginginig na naman
Ang puso kong sawa ng masaktan

Oohhh ooohhh

Naglalaro sa aking isip
Mali bang mgmahal ng sagad
Bakit kailangan pang mawala?
Bakit kailangan pang mawala?

Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng umasa sa wala
Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng mag-isa, ayoko ng mag-isa

Oohhh ooohhh

Lumalaki na naman ang pangungulila
Hinahanap ang ‘yong yakap at halik
Dumidilim na paligid
Saan ba ako nagkamali?

Bakit kailangan pang mawala?
Bakit kailangan pang kumalas?

Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng umasa sa wala
Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng mag-isa, ayoko ng mag-isa

Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng umasa sa wala
Palong palo sa kalungkutan
Ayoko ng mag-isa, ayoko ng mag-isa.

Jake shared that this MMK break was something he has been waiting for. “Since I joined ABS-CBN about four years ago, I really wanted to experience doing an MMK episode. In fact, I was thinking before that I’m okay just to be given the chance to guest star in a regular episode. And now that I’m part of one of the MMK’s 20th anniversary special episodes, I’m deeply honored. I feel really blessed for the opportunity,” Jake said.

According to Jake, he knew he was ready to take the challenging role. “I think I was ready for it. At first, I was scared to do it since this is my first time portraying a gay role. But I knew I was ready and this is the challenging role that I’ve been wanting to do for so long,” he shared.

In the “Spain” episode of MMK, Jake will be playing the life story of “Louie,” a Filipino transgender in Spain who strived hard to gain his father’s love. The episode is an inspiring story about how acceptance and forgiveness brought the relationship of a father and son even closer.

Andi Eigenmann Will Name Her Baby After Her Character in MLKI

Barely a month before she gives birth, Andi Eigenmann has already thought of a name for her baby girl.

In an interview with Kris Aquino on "Kris TV" this morning, Andi said her mom Jaclyn (Jose) wanted "Gabrielle" to be the baby's second name. And she personally chosen "Eli" as her nickname.

"My mom named her Gabrielle, which will be her second name. I'm still thinking of the first name, but her nickname will be Eli. So, we can call her Eli now even if the name is not yet final," Andi said. Adding, "Since siya naman ang grandmother and she's my mom, why not give it to her. I let her give one of the names among the two kasi gusto ko two ang names niya."

Gabrielle happens to be Andi's character in his last teleserye "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin."
