ABS-CBN’s State of the Art Soundstages Soon to Rise

Posted by JED on Saturday, September 24, 2011 , under | comments (0)

ABS-CBN is the first Philippine TV network to build soundstages.

ABS-CBN Corporation is set to build state-of-the-art soundstages and backlots that will enable the Kapamilya network to meet the multimedia company’s expansion plans and its growing needs to serve the viewing public.

The first soundstage will be up before end of 2012 in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan,” said ABS-CBN Chief Technology Officer Raul Bulaong, who is responsible for ABS-CBN’s production, post-production, animation, and transmission.

Bulaong said a soundstage is a sound-proof building in which TV shows and films are shot.

It’s like building a place where you can put together a hospital room, a hotel lobby, and an office space side by side and even shoot scenes sequentially,” he said.

ABS-CBN is the first among the local TV networks to pioneer the construction of state-of-the- art soundstages as it was also the first to build state-of-the-art TV studios in the 90s.

Aside from soundstages, Bulaong said ABS-CBN will also be constructing backlots which are areas adjacent to a soundstage that will enable them to shoot exterior or outdoor scenes like streets in foreign countries, a slum area, or even a generic street in New York City without the need to travel to far flung places.

With these facilities, you can easily do that. You just replicate the scenes,” he said.

Bulaong said the consumers stand to benefit from the plan. “ABS-CBN is producing a lot of TV shows aired on channel 2, Studio 23, cable TV channels like ANC, movies by Star Cinema,” he said.

And when the National Telecommunications gives its go signal for local networks to shift to digital TV, ABS-CBN will be launching five more new channels. This would mean more content and more shows that ABS-CBN should be able to produce efficiently.

For the city of San Jose del Monte, the construction of soundstages will be spurring development as demand for accommodation and recreation will be created as more production people and celebrities start trekking to Bulacan to work on TV and film assignments.

Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried in Futuristic Action Thriller “In Time”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Posing an opportune theme on looking and staying young, the futuristic action thriller “In Time” is set in a not-too-distant future when scientists have created a world where people stop aging at 25. The bad news though is that rather than being immortal everyone is genetically engineered with a body clock that gives them just one more year to live. Unless, that is, they can earn, buy, cheat or steal their way to some extra time.

“In Time” is a film by Andrew Niccol which stars music artist turned actor Justin Timberlake opposite the multi-faceted actress Amanda Seyfried. In the movie, Timberlake is Will Salas who is falsely accused of murder. Will figures out a way with the help of a wealthy hostage Sylvia Weis (Seyfried) to bring down the system where time is money and where only the rich can live forever.

“In Time” is written and directed by New Zealand-born Andrew Niccol, whose previous credits include the screenplay and direction for “The Truman Show” and “Gattaca.” “Gattaca” was ahead of the cinematic curve in its creative use of CGI effects and in envisaging a future world where genetics have become a tool of social engineering. “The Truman Show,” meanwhile, was uncannily prescient about the voyeuristic reality programming that has changed the face of television over the last decade. Not surprisingly then, there’s seemingly a lot more to “In Time” than guns and car chases, even if Niccol insists that the film is first and foremost an action thriller with “a ticking clock in every scene.” “But, yes, it was definitely the theme of immortality, the desire to live forever, that sparked my interest,” the director concedes, adding with a smile that it’s no coincidence that “In Time” was shot in Los Angeles. “Los Angeles is the capital of staying young forever,” he explains.

At the center of the story,” Niccol adds, “is this idea that in the future everyone is engineered to have a body clock that counts down the time they have left. And this invention is the death of all other inventions. So I think the film does comment a little bit on our seeming desire to stay young forever and what it would mean if we could do that, but our psychology may not be able to keep up with our biology.”

Amanda Seyfried, who recently starred in “Red Riding Hood” and “Mamma Mia” meanwhile, who clocks in at a spot-on 25 (inside and out), says that “In Time” is a completely original idea. The actress explains, “And such an amazing and intense concept – this thought that we may one day be able to switch off the gene for aging – but Andrew makes it seem entirely plausible and the characters feel completely real. I think there are very few writers who can do that: write a script with this extraordinary premise and create an imagined world that you absolutely believe in.

Justin Timberlake says it was a similar response to Niccol’s script that made him eager to jump on board. “When I first read the script I just got totally caught up in the characters and the story. Will is basically an anti-hero, an ordinary guy who’s forced to become a hero and take on these incredible challenges, and that aspect of it really appealed to me: I wanted him to come from a real place and be street smart but not to have extraordinary abilities. The film might be thought-provoking and give you something to talk about after you leave the cinema, but while you are watching it, the movie stays a couple of steps ahead of you the whole time and doesn’t really give you a chance to catch your breath,” Timberlake says.

“In Time” opens very soon in October from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls Ice Cream Offensive?

Ben & Jerry's Schweddy Balls Ice Cream

If you think everyone finds Ben & Jerry’s new “Schweddy Balls” flavored ice cream appealing, think again.

A group called One Million Moms finds Ben & Jerry's newest ice cream flavor offensive and is asking public for a boycott.

"The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive. Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket." the group stated on its website onemillionmoms.com.

The limited-edition ice cream flavor was inspired by a “Saturday Night Live” skit featuring Alec Baldwin as Pete Schweddy, owner of a holiday bakery called Season's Eatings.

"There are lots of great treats this time of year," Schweddy says. "Zucchini bread, fruitcake, but the thing I most like to bring out at this time of the year are my balls."

Ben & Jerry’s spokesperson Sean Greenwood, however, said that in the last three days, they only heard from about 600 moms - not a million - complaining about the new flavor. At the same time, the company has received hundreds more e-mails that say things like, "We love you guys."

Greenwood reiterates that the Company didn’t name the ice cream that way for shock value but rather to appreciate a funny skit.

Rare Crocodile Found in Florida by Shondra Farner

Rare crocodile photo by Shondra Farner

A rare American crocodile was found by a St. Petersburg woman in Florida on Thursday, September 22, 2011.

The rare crocodile was discovered by Shondra Farner in her backyard and immediately contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) Commission last Sunday, September 18, to report the rare reptile. Farner was able to take a picture of the rare crocodile (as seen above) with its mouth wide open from about a distance of 8 feet.

That big boy was just about 8 feet from our patio. It’s terribly scary looking. And fast. When he turned to leave, I couldn’t believe how quick he was,” said Farner.

According the the FWC, the rare crocodile that Farner discovered is an endangered kind of the American crocodile. They hired crocodile experts on Thursday to catch the rare crocodile.

Within the United States the American crocodile is only found within the southern half of Florida. There is an estimated population of about 2,000 crocodiles in Florida according to reports, and they are usually found at 300 miles south in the Florida Keys where it is warmer.

FWC officials said they cannot kill the rare crocodile because it is endangered. They, however, started to capture the crocodile alive to implant a magnet on the rare crocodile and it will be released into the Tampa Bay. The magnet will help disorient the rare reptile and prevent it from returning to neighborhoods.

According to Lindsey Hord, the crocodile response coordinator for the wildlife commission, this may be the same crocodile that was reported in 2008.

Officials said that the rare crocodile may be feeding itself with ducks that swim in the water.

MANILA, Philippines – Leading Philippine fashion brand Penshoppe carries on its campaign to cross the international style threshold, and at the same time, to cater to its younger market, as it welcomes its new face, Mario Maurer - one of Thailand’s hottest stars among his generation.

Maurer steps in as Penshoppe’s latest presentor, as recently confirmed by the line’s brand director Alex Mendoza. The 22-year-old actor and model takes off from the brand's international campaign, which was earlier led this year by British actor Ed Westwick of the popular series Gossip Girl.

"Mario will not only make Penshoppe a bigger fashion name across the borders. He will also help grow the market in the local and Southeast Asian region, especially knowing that he has a gained wide following among the younger set," Mendoza said on selecting the Thai star.

Mario is fresh, appealing and very influential. He represents the exciting new changes happening to the brand now,” he added.

Maurer, known for his strikingly boyish good looks, and cool, young, free-spirited style, has proved much of himself in the regional entertainment industry. Aside from gracing magazine covers, he has shown sensational acting skills by top-billing films year after year.

Among the films that boosted Maurer’s name to public consciousness was The Love of Siam released in 2007. In his debut role, he played a conflicted teen who develops a romantic liking to his boyhood friend. His remarkable portrayal awed fans from the Philippines, winning a Best Actor award at the 2008 Cinemanila, an annually-held international film festival in the Philippines.

In 2010, Maurer also starred in First Love (Crazy Little Thing Called Love), a romantic-comedy which saw him garnering major acting awards, and assured him a spot as one of the region’s most sought-after stars.

Maurer, meanwhile, is expected to arrive in the Philippines this October to shoot the Penshoppe campaign with renowned Hollywood photographer Darren Tieste flying in from Los Angeles. The campaign is expected to grace magazine covers and billboards across the country.

GMA Pinoy TV Receives 2 Runner-up Honors at the 2011 Excellence in Multicultural Marketing Awards

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

GMA Network’s flagship international channel GMA Pinoy TV continues to uphold excellence in marketing the Kapuso brand, and this is again proven by two valuable awards from the 2011 Excellence in Multicultural Marketing Awards (EMMA) of the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC).

The EMMA recognizes the members of the television cable industry and their efforts in reaching different cultural segments through their creative and innovative marketing strategies including print, TV commercials, and other marketing materials.

Landing 2nd Places in Marketing Tactics are GMA Pinoy TV’s Kapuso Abroad magazine for the Grassroots category and “Manila Jeepneys” for Diversity Awareness.

The Kapuso Abroad is GMA International’s glossy magazine targeting Filipinos all around the globe to keep them updated about their favorite Kapuso stars and provide them more stories behind the most anticipated programs from the Philippines as delivered by the two international channels, and soon by the third international, all Filipino news channel, GMA News TV International.

The magazine has become a popular and favorite item distributed in Filipino community events, in consulate offices, and in Filipino establishments. It has also proven to be a very useful tool for the call center representatives of GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV channel carriers when offering subscription opportunities to their customers.

Because of its popularity, GMA International has taken the next step that is to produce the digital counterpart of Kapuso Abroad so that it is made available to its online audiences. The magazine, which can now be viewed online via www.gmapinoytv.com, is also a venue for readers to know about the latest events and activities of the Filipino communities worldwide, providing them the opportunity to connect with their kababayans wherever they may be.

Meanwhile, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, GMA Pinoy TV partnered with the non-government organization Tahanang Walang Hagdanan–the Filipino counterpart of House with No Steps in Australia–in producing items that promoted the international channels and helped raise funds for its orthopedically handicapped members as well.

The “Manila Jeepneys” - hundreds of miniature wooden replicas of the iconic Pinoy vehicle, meticulously crafted by the TWH members - became a means for GMA International to contribute in raising money for the livelihood, medical, and educational efforts of the group. Part of the sales of the wooden jeepneys was also allocated for the special education program for children with special needs.

Through these collectible items, the representatives of the channel carriers acquired a better understanding and appreciation of the Filipino culture and its corresponding market.

"We are very honored that a renowned body like NAMIC has again recognized our efforts, this time for the ‘Kapuso Abroad’ magazine, which continues to be an effective communication tool among Filipinos living abroad, and the ‘Manila Jeepneys,’ which boast highly of the Pinoy identity. This inspires us to continue reaching out to our kababayans in the country and around the world by tapping means which do not only speak of Pinoy creativity and innovativeness, but also that which are relevant to the larger community," shares Joseph T. Francia, Vice President and Head of Operations for GMA International.

This is actually the third year that GMA Pinoy TV was cited by NAMIC. In 2006, the “Comcast San Francisco Bay Area GMA Pinoy TV Launch” was awarded 1st place in the Case Study Cable category for being “the most successful cable network launch in Comcast Bay Area history, dramatically exceeding goals.” The Kapuso international channel also bagged the 1st place award that same year in Marketing Tactics for Network Internet/New Media category for its website www.gmapinoytv.com.

And just last 2010, GMA Pinoy TV, together with GMA Life TV, again landed 1st Place in Direct Mail Marketing Tactics for “Time Warner GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV launch postcard” and 2nd Places in both Direct Mail and Print Marketing Tactics for “Comcast GMA Life TV Upsell.”

The awarding ceremony for the 2011 EMMA is set to take place during the 25th Annual Conference of NAMIC on October 5 at Hilton New York.

Nora Aunor Declares: "Ayoko na sa Dos."; ABS-CBN Reveals: "She's Unprofessional!"

Posted by JED on Thursday, September 22, 2011 , under | comments (15)

In the October 2011 issue of YES! Magazine where Nora Aunor is the featured cover star, the Superstar not just talked about the very reason why she decided to leave the country 8 years ago, her surgery in Japan that jeopardized her golden voice, her tomboyish crush with archrival Vilma Santos, but also revealed some explosive information about her working experienced with ABS-CBN and its management particularly mentioning its President Charo Santos-Concio.

According to Nora, she had an unpleasant working relationship with ABS-CBN in the past that made her decide not to work again with the Kapamilya network.

Nora was one of the featured artists in ABS-CBN's defunt weekly drama anthology "Star Drama Theater Presents" and primetime musical drama series "Bituin" in 2002.

"Ayoko talaga sa kanila." Nora declared.

"Nauna pa ako, e, sa set, wala silang problema sa akin." she recalled.

"No'ng natapos na 'yong ilang weeks biglang wala na. Ngayon, mabuti na lang do'n sa kontrata, nakalagay na kapag sila nagkamali, obligado silang bayaran pa rin ako kung ano 'yong dapat ibabayad sa akin. One hundred percent no'ng dapat total na ibabayad sa akin pag hindi ako ang may kamalian, babayaran ako." she further revealed. And goes on by saying, "Actually, wala na 'yon. Kaya lang, hindi ko lang kaya 'yong palakad nila, e. 'Yon lang. Maaaring wala na akong sama ng loob kay Charo, wala akong sama ng loob kay Malou. Pero ayoko na rin sa Dos."

Meanwhile, ABS-CBN through its Head of TV Entertainment Linggit Tan answered Nora's claim by saying:

Number one: Ang context ng Nora-ABS-CBN contract is that it was for a weekly anthology called Star Drama Theater Presents.

Ang concept nito ay the show will feature one star for one season, with a season running for thirteen weeks.

But Nora's season had to be cut short because of her unprofessional working habits.

Number two: ABS gave Nora Bituin, a soap opera starring her and Cherie Gil...

But for a soap to work, it has to be consistent in terms of quality, acting, production timetable...

But the working habits of Nora, naulit-ulit.

Number three: Prior to her much-talked about return to Philippines, certain quarters representing her were talking to ABS.

They came to us!

In all fairness to the network, we never entertained any of those offers. It's to our detriment naman to say hindi siya interesado sa amin.

We didn't respond to those feelers.

It's not her option to choose us.

But we wish her well."

Who Will Become the First Pinoy Biggest Loser?

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Final weigh-in for the Fab Five at the Grand Finale on October 8.

The country’s biggest reality TV show “The Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition” comes to an exciting finish when the Fab Five and other eliminated contestants come together for a final weigh-in that will determine who among Angela, Art, Hazel, Larry, and Raffy will lose the highest weight percentage since the start of the show and be declared the very first Pinoy Biggest Loser at the Grand Finale this October 8, Saturday, at the Ynares Stadium in Pasig.

Armed with the knowledge gained during their four-month stay in the Biggest Loser camp, the Bigating Pinoys continue their journey in the real world and undergo rigorous weight loss regimen without the help of trainers Chinggay Andrada and Jim Saret.

Through the weeks, viewers have seen how the reality show has transformed the contestants physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some have visibly lost weight, while others have gained more confidence. As they work towards the finals, the remaining Fab Five have their own strategies to win.

While sweethearts Hazel and Raffy try hard to work out twice a day, Art and Angela make sure they get enough sleep and have a balanced diet.

All these years, I have carried so much burden, pain, humiliation, anger, and sadness. So every lost pound was like an excess baggage thrown away and a symbolism of the new me,” bar owner Art said.

By zooming in on the lives of overweight people and the negative impact of obesity on health, the program and its contestants have taught viewers how to adopt a healthy lifestyle and that losing weight can be achieved by exercising and eating the right food.

Hazel even considers joining the competition her second life, saying that it “unraveled the Hazel that has long been suppressed.” Though she admits that the whole world does not only revolve around losing weight, the Bigating Pinoys have proven that any obstacle can be overcome as long as one has the will and determination to reach his or her goal.

There are times you gain weight instead of losing weight. You should exert more effort. Though there are times you fail, you should carry on and not give up,” she said.

The two other contestants affirmed how the show has transformed their lives. Sporting a new and healthier physique, Larry plans to return to the police force. On the other hand, Raffy has changed his outlook in life. He used to make excuses that stood between him and his weight goal but he now realizes that change must start with oneself.

You don’t need to be a contestant in ‘Biggest Loser’ to lose weight. You only need yourself,” he said.

While the transformation of the Fab Five is evident, only one of them will be declared the first Pinoy Biggest Loser and take home P1 million, a newly furnished condominium unit from DCMI Homes, a Vespa scooter, a 40″ Sony Bravia Internet TV, Whirlpool appliances and a lifetime Fitness First membership.

The second placer will get P500,000, a Vespa scooter, Whirlpool appliances and one year Fitness First membership. On the other hand, the third placer will take home P300,000, a Vespa scooter, Fujidenzo Home Appliances, and one year Fitness First membership.

Not to be outdone are eliminated contestants Alan, Andy, Eboy, Edden, Eric, JM, Joy, Leigh, Ryan, and Winwin who will also battle at the grand finale weigh-in. The one who will lose the highest percentage of their initial weight will be proclaimed the At-Home Winner and will get P200,000 and one year Fitness First membership.

Who will emerge as the first ever Pinoy Biggest Loser? Catch the “Biggest Loser Pinoy Edition Wellness Fair and Grand Finale” on October 8 (Saturday) at the Ynares Stadium in Pasig, with host Sharon Cuneta, game master Derek Ramsay, and trainers Chinggay Andrada and Jim Saret.

Glee Season 3 Episode 1 Recap – Purple Piano Project

Glee Season 3 Episode 1 Recap – Purple Piano Project

Tina and Artie are, as of now, the only juniors we know of that will be staying behind. Sam moved so his dad could get a new job and Mercedes has a new man that she can make wonderful “cocoa babies” with. Lauren peaced out because Glee is bad for her rep and Quinn is off smoking, talking with an embarrassing accent and shopping at Hot Topic. I’m torn about the news that Tina and Artie won’t be graduating with the original cast of the show. I love Kevin and am happy I’ll be able to watch him next year but the idea of this group not staying together doesn’t sit well with me. Quinn’s rebel phase and joining a group called The Skanks is so hilarious to me. She’s prancing down the hall because she’s ~found herself~ and she’s “never going back.” Girl please. This is only going to last like two episodes. Maybe.

With Sam, Quinn and Lauren gone, the glee club needs new members. Schue puts it to the club to work even harder this year to recruit new members. He places purple pianos around the school and they are to perform for the school whenever one is around. They should seriously donate the lavender one to me. It’s so pretty! First performance is a spontaneous cafeteria rendition of We Got The Beat. The performance is so hated by the room that it spawns a food fight. I’m sorry but hot cheerleaders dancing on tables will always create a happy crowd. There’s something wrong with the people in this school. Their luck with new members is in the gutter. Their only prospect is a new girl named Sugar who sounds like a bad American Idol audition. She can say whatever she wants because you know, she has Aspergers.

Sue being nice to the club for performing at her sister’s funeral lasted a good 30 hours and now it’s time for her reign of terror. She wants to destroy glee club once again and the purple pianos are the first to go. She takes care of one and enlists her Cheerios captain Santana to take care of the rest. Sue is running for congress and to get votes, her new platform will be to stop wasting taxpayer’s money on music education. She’s made an enemy out of Schue and he dumps a bucket of glitter in her hair. That must have been a bitch to get out.

Kurt wants his boo to transfer to Mckinley so they can be together forever. And wouldn’t you know it, Blaine is just that amazing that he only needs a day to decide to change his life and join Mckinley High. We get to celebrate with a courtyard performance of It’s Not Unusual. I hate that I love this song and performance so much. The red pants and bow tie Blaine is wearing coupled with the fact he’s not wearing any socks is making me rage. There are so many opportunities Artie could run him over. During the performance with the help of Quinn’s cigarette, Santana sets the second purple piano on fire. The rest of the group may not be happy with Blaine joining New Directions to hog all the solos and irritate them with his red pants, they’re even more unhappy with Santana. Schue bans her from the Glee club until further notice.

Rachel and Kurt are still anxious to live the dream in New York City and can’t wait to apply to Juliard. It’s news to them when Emma lets them know that Juliard doesn’t have a musical theater program. She suggests a super competitive New York based school instead. They practice on the school stage together singing Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead. I love them together! Rachel is making Kurt likeable. The two of them head over to a mixer of prospective students hoping to blow them all away. They’re stunned when they walk in and everyone is exactly like them. And hey! There’s Lindsay from The Glee Project! Get it girl! And boy does she. She blows them away belting out Anything You Can Do with Anything Goes. DAMN. Rachel fears that their lack of extra curricular activities is hurting them and proposes that the school put on a production of West Side Story. They end the day performing You Can’t Stop The Beat to celebrate that they will always be making music.

Funniest Quotes of the Night:

Brittany: There’s pepperoni in my bra.
Santana: Those are your nipples.

Maria Aragon, Thia Megia To Sing the National Anthem in Pacquiao - Marquez III Bout

Maria Aragon, Thia Megia To Sing National Anthem in Pacquiao - Marquez III Bout

As previously announced, young Pinay YouTube sensation Maria Aragon was chosen by Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao himself to sing the Philippine national anthem in his upcoming fight with Juan Miguel Marquez on November 12.

But just last Sunday, American Idol Season 10 finalist Thia Megia announced during her live guest appearance in GMA-7 showbiz oriented show Showbiz Central that she will also sing on the same fight as promised to her by Pacquiao, "I met him last night. It was amazing. I got to sing the national anthem for him last night. He told me that I will be singing in his next fight," Megia said.

Some might ask, "are they going to have a 'Lupang Hinirang' duet?" Is this confusion related (no, not again) to network war (Aragon is a Kapamilya talent while Megia is being associated with Kapuso network)?

But before this confusion get out of control, Aragon's manager Jeng Guiyab cleared this issue and said that Pacquiao's secretary confirmed that Aragon will be the one to sing the Philippine national anthem "Lupang Hinirang" while Megia will sing the US anthem "Star Spangled Banner".

Futuristic Robot Boxing Comes Alive in “Real Steel”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Imagine a time in the near future when boxing fans have become bored with watching human beings pummel each other. It’s a time when the public’s thirst for violence and carnage is greater than what mere mortal athletes can give – or take. It’s a world in which boxing has evolved to the point where men no longer compete against each other – robots have replaced pugilists. Welcome to the world of “Real Steel”!

In DreamWorks Pictures’ gritty, white‐knuckle action ride, Hugh Jackman stars as Charlie Kenton, a washed‐up boxer in the near‐future who, because his sport has been taken over by 8‐foot steel robots, now lives in a world where he doesn’t fit in. With no fights and no prospects, Charlie is forced to hustle as a small‐time robot fight promoter. He earns just enough money to survive by piecing together low‐end “bots” and traveling from one seamy underground boxing venue to the next for whatever prizefight he can wrangle for his automatons. Just when things can’t become any more desperate and complicated, his estranged 10‐year‐old son Max (Dakota Goyo) suddenly and unwillingly comes back into his life.

The alienated father/son duo reluctantly team up to rebuild and train a scrap‐heap robot and turn it into a boxing contender. As stakes in the brutal, no‐holds‐barred fighting arenas are raised, against all odds Charlie gets one last shot at a comeback, and Max discovers that, win or lose, life holds more for him than he ever expected.

Exploring the deeper depths of the story, director Shawn Levy experienced it as a tale of redemption for three lost and forgotten souls. “The main characters – a father, his son and a machine – are each abandoned beings,” Levy says. “All three of them have been cast aside and forgotten. The substance of the story is about how this trinity has a chance of returning to grace.

The idea of boxing robots was a provocative one for Levy who is widely regarded for his box-office hit comedies “Night at the Museum” and “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.” When DreamWorks first presented him with the idea for “Real Steel” he says he was attracted to the project because of the pitch from Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider. “They called me up and talked about what at first sounded like a crazy idea for a movie,” Levy recalls of his initial response to the story. “Of course I was super‐flattered, but I was on the fence about the premise. Then I read the script. What I found was an opportunity to make an emotional father/son/sports movie. That was galvanizing for me.”

Levy grew up not only as a fan of boxing but also as an ardent admirer of boxing movies such as “Raging Bull” and the “Rocky” series of films. “Even the not-so-great ones are awesome because there’s usually an underdog hero and you want him to have a comeback and to give his all and ultimately triumph,” the director says. “‘Real Steel’ is absolutely an homage to those boxing movies that I watched with my brothers fifty times.”

Although “Real Steel” is an action movie complete with visually remarkable American landscapes and big‐action spectacles, director Levy did not want to rely simply on either the wide‐open vistas or fantastic robot machinery in order to explore the relationships in the story. “For me, this movie couldn’t be just big and loud and cool,” Levy says. “That would have been unoriginal. The screenplay had a unique human heart at its core, so the movie had to be an interesting hybrid of badass action and scale, with a really sincere and warm‐hearted story that is ultimately about salvation.”

Opening soon across the Philippines in IMAX and regular theaters, “Real Steel” is a DreamWorks Picture to be distributed locally by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

Cate Blanchett, Out to Endanger the Life of “Hanna”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Hailed as one of the best actresses of our generation, Cate Blanchett plays the antagonist in Columbia Pictures' new suspense thriller “Hanna.” Directed by Joe Wright (“Atonement”)) and also starring Eric Bana and Saoirse Ronan, “Hanna” will be shown exclusively at Ayala Malls Cinemas (Glorietta 4 & Greenbelt 3) starting September 28.

Raised by her father, Erik (Bana) in the wilds of Finland, Hanna's (Ronan) upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. The turning point in her adolescence is a sharp one; sent into the world by her father on a mission, Hanna journeys stealthily across Europe while eluding agents dispatched after her by a ruthless intelligence operative with secrets of her own. As she nears her ultimate target, Hanna faces startling revelations about her existence and unexpected questions about her humanity.

The threat to Hanna is incarnated by Blanchett who portrays Marissa Wiegler, the cold-steel magnolia CIA agent who once upon a time worked in the field with Erik. Now based in Langley, Virginia, Wiegler’s life has been “built around the telling of lies and the holding of secrets, and she has given her all to her job,” notes the actress.

As part of researching the role, Blanchett spoke with a CIA agent who illuminated for her “the tension that exists between those in the field and those who are at headquarters, in Langley.”

She elaborates, “Marissa worked undercover in Germany in the 1990s, and relished the cut-and-thrust of covert operations. The one she was involved with Erik in failed and was closed down, so she harbors incredible resentment towards the agency about the whole thing as well as self-loathing. When Erik and Hanna reappear, she goes back into the field to close them down. Finding Hanna starts out as a professional necessity, but becomes pathological, for her. She wants to possess this child; it’s a bit like the Wicked Witch from the Hansel and Gretel story. The fairy tale elements add a heightened quality to the scenes.”

Blanchett had a previous professional tie to Wright. She reveals, “Joe and I were preparing another project together, and that fell through. Then he sent me this script, which terrified me; my partner noted that I’d never had a reaction like that to a screenplay. So Joe and I got to work; it was important to him that Marissa be from Texas, and I tried to get the accent subtly so that it wasn’t overpowering.”

Blanchett adds, “As a director, Joe creates a safe environment where you can make a few mistakes, and then hopefully you make better decisions. Joe’s attention to detail is such that one minute he would be fixing my hem, the next helping to paint a set, and the next calling for the lens numbers. He is involved in every aspect of filmmaking.”

Anti-Planking Act of 2011 Filed by QC Rep. Winnie Castelo Earns Criticisms

Anti-Planking Act of 2011 - QC Rep. Winnie Castelo

QC Rep. Winston "Winnie" Castelo during the Press Statement on Planking in Street Protest Actions

Rep. Winston "Winnie" Castelo of the 2nd District of Quezon City, has file a bill known as the "Anti-Planking Act of 2011".

The bill which seeks to prohibit "planking" as a form of protest raised after a group of students called League of Filipino Students staged a "die-in" protest in the form of planking to block vehicles during a transport strike along a main street in Welcome Rotonda, Espana in Metro Manila yesterday, September 19, 2011.

Photo taken during the September 19 transport strike in Welcome Rotonda and Espana Manila

"I was really worried as a parent. I have kids. I was also a UP student and I sympathize with them. It is normal to air their grievances and I welcome that as a lawmaker. However, as a parent, we have to see to it that their lives are protected as well," Castelo told ABS-CBN.

Although he gave an assurance that the proposed Anti-Planking Act of 2011 will not prohibit the constitutional right of freedom of expression, Castelo proposed the creation of a universal Code of Student Conduct "where planking as a form of redress of grievance be strictly prohibited and appropriate sanctions be applied for violations thereof."

He also urged schools and universities officials to impose sanctions on students who conduct planking to air their grievances especially when it poses a danger to themselves or to the public.

The Congressman is also thinking of what sanctions could be imposed on ordinary citizens who conduct planking protests.

Here is the full details of the Anti-Planking Act of 2011 filed by QC Rep. Winston "Winnie" Castelo as posted at http://www.winniecastelo.net website:

In quick denunciation of what members of the League of Filipino Students did during the September 19 transport strike along Espana road in Sampaloc, Manila to show support to PISTON, Rep. Winston “Winnie” Castelo was prompted to file a bill to address an important concern.

In his bill, also known as the “Anti-Planking Act of 2010”, Castelo feared that planking will be used as a template of subsequent street rallies or protest actions initiated by students to express redress of grievances against the status quo.

“The parent in me tells me that this precedent in the case of the this massive transport strike where militant street protesters who are students of various schools have to lie down or serve as ‘planks’ across the road to disrupt what should be normal traffic could just be very dangerous in the future. Life and limb are pretty much at risks here were unbelieving bus drivers or law enforcement authorities might just ram through these warm and living bodies rolled out on highways”, Castelo strongly pointed out.

Indeed, in his proposed bill, the well-intentioned solon wants that a Code of Student Conduct be drafted to be implemented by Dep Ed in the case of elementary and high school students and the CHED in the case of college students who may have militant or radical student leaders engaged in street protests or demonstrations.

Castelo in the Explanatory Note of his legislative measure said, “Parents and teachers have reason to be alarmed if these similar protest actions will have as a scheme and scene otherwise warm and living bodies laid down across street highways as though they were offerings to the gods”.

Thus for the solon, “lest this picture read in newspapers or posted in the internet might evolve into a new mindset that just might go viral or very contagious, let it be nipped in the bud. The Filipino psyche of our young children in school is under attack – right here and now”.

Relatedly, there were already some solons who also raised the same fears of what happened during this September 19 transport strike.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Philippines in Congress assembled:

SECTION 1. This Act shall be known as the “Anti-Planking Act of 2011”.

SEC. 2. A universal Code of Student Conduct is hereby prescribed where planking as a form of redress of grievance be strictly prohibited and appropriate sanctions be applied for violations thereof.

SEC. 3. Under this Act, planking is when a student or group of students lies face down in unusual locations especially in streets or other public places, keeping the hands along the body and the feet outstretched and especially where such act is meant as a form of redress of grievance against government.

SEC. 4 Every bonafide student from any school, college or university shall conduct himself with high degree of discipline and propriety.

SEC. 5. The Department of Education in the case of elementary and high school students and the Commission on Higher Education in the case of college students shall draft a universal Code of Student Conduct to carry out the provisions of this Act.

Further, DepEd and CHED, respectively shall issue appropriate rules and regulations to effectively carry out intent and purpose of this Act.

SEC. 6. This Act shall take effect ninety (90) days after its publication in the Official Gazette and in at least three (3) newspapers of general circulation.

Hours after Castelo filed the "Anti-Planking Act of 2011," social media and the networld went abuzz and announced their reactions (all of them negative) on the proposed bill.

Below are just some out of 1,000+ of them (and still counting) on twitter:

FakeNoynoy said: "I worry about the fate of the Filipino people due to the current level of idiocy in congress. Anti-Planking Act of 2011? SRSLY?!"

iamtimyap: "I'll plank to that. “@planetchuckie: The Anti-Planking Act of 2011 is even more useless and absurd than the act of planking itself."

SarahMaeyer twitted "Anti-Planking Act of 2011 is so non-sense and stupid. There are too many problems we have to fix than this one. Wake up people!"

jobdeleon: "Anti-Planking Act of 2011 trending worldwide. Prepare to be embarrassed, Philippines. Sinasayang niyo naman yung good int'l PR ni Shamcey!"

mjfelipe wrote: "Imagine, the taxes they collect from our earnings, pinapasweldo sa congressman na magpapasa ng Anti planking Act of 2011! Mahiya ka naman!"

renguray said: "Joke of the century! Rep. Winnie Castelo files "Anti-Planking Act of 2011" denounces the use of "planking" as a form of protest...."
