Pets Reduces Pet Allergies Risk According to Study

Results of an eighteen year long study revealed that exposing children to pets at an earlier age might do more good than harm.

While popular belief holds that exposure to domesticated animals could kick off allergic reactions in young ones, research from the Detroit Childhood Allergy Study show that is just not the case.

In the study, published this Monday in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, researchers found that, for most of the childhood years, direct exposure to a dog or cat had little effect on later allergies. However, exposure lowered the risk for some children if they were exposed to a pet during their first year of life.

We think this is a critical window,” said study author Ganesa Wegienka, an epidemiologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Specifically, the study- comprised of 565 children followed from birth to age 18- found that infants exposed to a pet in the first year of life were only about half as likely to develop a significant amount of antibodies to dog or cat allergens, a process called allergic sensitization.

This research provides further evidence that experiences in the first year of life are associated with health status later in life, and that early life pet exposure does not put most children at risk of being sensitized to these animals later in life,” said Wegienka in a news release.

As the old adage says, timing is everything.

Cancer Death Rate Much Higher to Least Educated

ATLANTA (AP) – The gap in cancer death rates between college graduates and those who only went to high school is widening, the American Cancer Society reported Friday.

Among men, the least educated died of cancer at rates more than 2 1/2 times that of men with college degrees, the latest data show. In the early 1990s, they died at two times the rate of most-educated men.

For women, the numbers aren't as complete but suggest a widening gap also. The data, from 2007, compared people between the ages of 25 and 64.

People with college degrees are seeing a significant drop in cancer death rates, while people who have spent less time in school are seeing more modest improvements or sometimes none at all, explained Elizabeth Ward, who oversees research done by the cancer society.

The cancer society estimates there will be nearly 1.6 million new cancer cases in the United States this year, and 571,950 deaths. It also notes that overall cancer death rates have been dropping since the early 1990s, but the decline has been greater for some groups more than others.

Experts believe that the differences have to do with education, how much people earn and where they live, among other factors. Researchers like to use education as a measuring stick because death certificates include that information.

"Just because we're measuring education doesn't mean we think education is the direct reason" for the differences among population groups, Ward said.

That said, the cancer death rate connection to education is striking.

For all types of cancer among men, there were about 56 deaths per 100,000 for those with at least 16 years of education compared to 148 deaths per 100,000 for those with no more than 12 years of school.

For women, the rate was 59 per 100,000 for the most educated, and 119 per 100,000 for the least educated.

The gap was most striking when it comes to lung cancer.

People with a high school education or less died at a rate four to five times higher than those with at least four years of college education, the new report said.

More than a third of premature cancer deaths could have been avoided if everyone had a college degree, cancer society officials estimated.

Studies have suggested that less educated people are more likely to do risky things with their health.

They are more likely to smoke, drink and overeat, leading to obesity. All those things raise the risk for various cancers.

As for survival after diagnosis, the least-educated are often poor people without good health insurance. Studies have found that people with no health insurance are more likely to be diagnosed when their cancer is advanced stage, and they are also less likely to receive standard treatment.

Tambayan DJ Chacha’s ‘Mwahmwah TsupTsup’ Now a Hit Novelty Song

Gone are the days when radio deejays were simply introducing songs.

Now, they are celebrities in their own right, appearing on television shows, getting commercial deals, and yes, even coming up with their very own songs.

Such is the case of Tambayan 101.9’s DJ Chacha, who soared to popularity because of her witty adlibs, sexy spiels, and most of all, her popular tagline “mwahmwah-tsuptsup.”

A combination of two words which both pertain to a kiss, “mwahmwah-tsuptsup” is Chacha’s signature line in her late night program that airs from 9pm to 1am on ABS-CBN’s FM radio station. While the program’s timselot is usually associated with a quiet and mellow type of programming, it’s the opposite on this side of the FM radio band.

Chacha’s program starts out with “Ano’ng Meron,” a segment wherein listeners can share about whatever is going on with their lives. “They usually end talking about love issues,” Chacha said.

Things heat up when the clock strikes 12 midnight and “Sexy Time” begins. The segment, targeted at adults, encourages people to talk about their naughty escapades. A caller is put on-air and he or she would open up to Chacha. “We do talk about sex but of course, it’s never vulgar,” Chacha explained. “If you try to listen to the segment, it’s actually really funny!

At the end of each call, the caller would get the chance to do the “mwahmwah-tsuptsup” with Chacha. “I always tell them, you take care of the ‘mwahmwah’ part, and I’ll do the ‘tsuptsup!’” she exclaimed. Fans of the program highly anticipate this portion, that some even resort to inventing stories for Sexy Time just so they would be put on-air and they could get to experience the “mwahmwah-tsuptsup.”

The tagline is such a hit that even Ted Failon asks Chacha to deliver her famous tagline whenever Chacha does her showbiz reports in DZMM 630. Mall shows which she hosts are also never complete without her saying the tagline much to the delight of her fans.

This made Star Records sit up, take notice, and offer her a recording contract.

Composer Kiks Salazar of Bellhaus Entertainment came up with a novelty song entitled “Mwahmwah-Tsuptsup,” and this was produced in coordination with Star Records. The song is currently featured on Tambayan 101.9’s “Click Dito,” which highlights songs that have the potential to become a hit.

And it is indeed on its way to becoming a hit. Now available on digital distribution through, the song has been downloaded many times over by Chacha’s loyal fans. It will also be available soon for mobile download.

The 23-year old deejay is ecstatic about this. “The song is really cute and I’m happy that people like it,” Chacha said. “Now I’m hoping the song becomes a dance craze too just like the songs of other novelty singers!

With a loyal fanbase on Facebook and a number of fan clubs to her name, it sure isn’t impossible. And so if you ever chance upon her doing a mall show, don’t be surprised if the host also doubles as a front act.

Tune in to Chacha’s program on Tambayan 101.9 San Ka Pa! on the FM radio band or listen online and enjoy the live video stream on from 9pm to 1am.

De La Salle University At 100 (In Celebration of De La Salle University Centennial)

MANILA, Philippines - At 10:00 o'clock Wednesday at Taft Avenue/Vito Cruz, Secretary of Education Bro. Armin Altamirano Luistro, FSC, presides over the Centennial celebrations of his alma mater De La Salle University.

There are Coca-Cola Lites, San Mig Lites, and Pepsi Lites; but today on their 100th year La Sallites are heavyweights.

History. Why is the day so important? Because after Admiral George Dewey defeated Admiral Patricio Montojo at the Battle of Manila Bay, President William McKinley fell on his knees for Divine inspiration what to do with the Philippine Islands and its people…

So the story goes, and Raul Manglapus recalls that President McKinley was inspired "to Christianize the Catholics."

So much so that after the USA acquired the Philippines for $20 million or $2 per capita, the Archbishop of Manila feared that good intentions can be a road to hell… or at least to Protestantism when the Thomasites (precursor of Peace Corps) introduce universal education.

So the Archbishop sent his own Mission Impossible to invite American Catholic educators. But the Dominican and Jesuit provinces were occupied arguing between them.

Fortunately, an errant knight responded… and the American province of Christian Brothers arrived. (We shall learn later that they would produce Archers; the Dominicans of San Juan de Letran would produce the Knights).

While the Jesuits and the Dominicans kept their Spanish language schools in Intramuros, on 15 June 1911, the Christian Brothers opened the first English-language school of De La Salle College with Grecian pillars on Taft Avenue.

De La Salle had a head-start on the language of the future… the way Xavier Kwang Chi has a head-start on all other Philippine schools in teaching Mandarin.

(Eventually, the Jesuits moved to Padre Faura and to Loyola Heights where they caught up teaching Arrneow accent; while the Christian Brothers emphasized math. Today, the Blue Eagles dominate call centers, while the Archers dominate business).

Mens sana in corpore sano. Historically, the rivalry between the two schools of higher learning goes all the way back to NCAA at Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Today De La Salle is a bastion of education. With a world-class basketball team, it was elevated to university… principally as Green Archers rival to Blue Eagles at this 74th year of UAAP.

Happiest at this rivalry is Columbia honorary Consul General Jorge Araneta hearing the music of the till at Araneta Dome… which pumps the Philippine economy.

Only in the Philippines. Ironically, De La Salle colleges abroad are universally blue; green is only in De La Salle PH. Either the Eagles won the blue in a raffle or the Archers here anticipated the color of environment and climate change.

We learned some of the above from Makati Medical Center orthopedic surgeon who oversees UAAP bone-breaking games, Dr. Vince Gomez… who learned it from Brother Andrew. Dr. Gomez can mend broken green arrows, but maybe not much good with plucked blue feathers.

A highlight of the centenary celebrations was an original three-act musical, "Proudly Green," on June 11 at SMX Convention Center directed by Fritz Infante. A walk down memory lane in rock, pop and razzmatazz to pump the alumni animo.

That was followed on June 12 with premiere at MoA of Doy del Mundo's film, "Paglipad ng Angel." Flying higher than an eagle.

De La Salle had commemorative postal stamps on its 50th year (1961) and on its 75th year (1986). But it passed up on issuing stamps on its 100th year. Because it's thoroughly modern alumni don't use snail mail..?

Or they don't want to be gaya-gaya to the University of Sto. Tomas which issued stamps on its Quadricentennial (400th anniversary)…?

Which was gaya-gaya to Ateneo de Manila High School Class 1960 Jubilarians who had their own "Fabilioh" postage stamps in 2010 to commemorate their 50th anniversary? Feedback:

Pregnant Regine Velasquez Suffers from Gestational Diabetes

Barely four months before she gives birth to her first baby with equally good singer husband Ogie Alcasid, Regine Velasquez reportedly suffers from gestational diabetes.

This is what Ogie revealed in a taped interview aired on “StarTalk TX” last Saturday, June 11.

Meron siyang gestational diabetes which is quite normal for pregnant women. We try not to give her too many carbohydrates and… mahirap kasi, siyempre pag buntis ka you’re always hungry, ‘noh? So nakakaawa naman, laging gutom. Pero iyon nga sabi ko, ‘Hon, kailangang konting tiis,’” Ogie said. Adding, “You know the baby and Regine need all the attention. As much as I can attend to… I’m always there kapag nagbi-visit kami sa OB (obstetrician), so I really take note… every two hours after she eats we take her sugar para alam namin kung tumataas o bumababa.”

The very excited soon-to-be-dad-again also said that they still doesn’t know their baby’s gender.

Wala pa, siguro next month. Kasi nasa three months and two weeks na kami so siguro sa fourth month medyo masisilayan na kung meron siyang extension dun sa kanyang katawan.”

Lady Gaga - The Edge of Glory (Music Video and Lyrics)

Check out the newly-released official music video for Lady Gaga’s latest single, “The Edge of Glory”.

Gaga wore fashion from the last collection of Gianni Versace in the video, which was directed by Haus of Gaga.

There ain't a reason you and me should be alone
Tonight, yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
But I got a reason that you're who should take me home tonight
I need a man that thinks it right when it's so wrong,
Tonight yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
Right on the limit's where we know we both belong tonight

It's hot to feel the rush,
To brush the dangerous
I'm gonna run back to, to the edge with you
Where we can both fall far in love.

I'm on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment of truth,
I'm on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment with you,
I'm on the edge
The edge (6x)
I'm on the edge of glory
And I'm hanging on a moment with you
I'm on the edge with you

Another shot, before we kiss the other side,
Tonight, yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
I'm on the edge of something final we call life tonight
Alright, alright
Put on your shades 'cause I'll be dancing in the flames
Tonight, yeah baby
Tonight, yeah baby
It isn't Hell if everybody knows my name
Tonight, alright, alright

It's hot to feel the rush,
To brush the dangerous

I'm gonna run back to, to the edge with you
Where we can both fall far in love.

I'm on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment of truth,
Out on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment with you,
I'm on the edge
The edge (6x)
I'm on the edge of glory
And I'm hanging on a moment with you
I'm on the edge with you

I'm on the edge with you

I'm on the edge with you

I'm on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment of truth,
I'm on the edge of glory,
And I'm hanging on a moment with you,
I'm on the edge
The edge (6x)
I'm on the edge of glory
And I'm hanging on a moment with you
I'm on the edge with you
With you (4x)
I'm on the edge with you
With you (4x)
I'm on the edge with you
With you (4x)
I'm on the edge with you
With you (4x)

New Quake Fault Found in California

The Polaris Fault
Credit: U.S. Geological Survey (BSSA/USGS/USACE)

A new earthquake-producing fault has been discovered in California. The Polaris line, at only 22 miles long, is a dwarf compared to the San Andreas Fault, which stretches 800 miles and has triggered some of the world’s biggest tremors.

Polaris is said to be powerful enough to cause an earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale and flood a valley by smashing a dam.

The Polaris Fault was discovered using laser imaging technology known as LiDAR, which was used as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ evaluation of the dam. LiDAR emits laser pulses down toward the ground from an airplane — even through dense vegetation — to get high-resolution topology maps. Once researchers stripped off the heavy pine tree layer from the maps, they found evidence of the fault sitting just 200 meters from the dam.

Scientists with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were inspecting the Martis Creek Dam, which sits just outside Truckee, California and about 35 miles upstream from Reno. It is one of 10 dams in the United States that has “urgent and compelling” safety concerns, according to the Corps, which owns the dam. Data from the most recent evaluation revealed that, not only does the dam have significant leakage, it also lies in close proximity to not two, but three fault zones. If it broke, the Martis Creek Dam has the potential to deluge the homes of 16,000 people in nearby Truckee and flood waters could travel 35 miles to Reno, Nevada, where 220,000 people live.

JK Rowling Launches New Harry Potter Website Called "Pottermore"

LONDON (Reuters) - Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling has launched a new website called "Pottermore," but fans of the boy wizard will have to wait to see what it entails as the entry page says simply "Coming Soon...."

The site,, was launched a month ahead of the release of the eighth and final Potter movie on July 15.

Some Potter fan sites, which have been instrumental in generating a large and loyal fan base for the movies and seven-book series on which they are based, were given a sneak preview of the mysterious new website.

"It is, in a word, breathtaking," wrote Leaky Cauldron, one of the leading Potter sites. "That is all we are permitted to say at the moment."

Rowling and Potter studio Warner Bros. have never shied away from building up the hype ahead of key releases in the series.

The Harry Potter novels have sold more than 400 million copies worldwide, while the seven movies released so far have grossed some $6.4 billion in ticket sales. Rowling has been billed the "world's first billionaire author."

A spokeswoman for Rowling confirmed that the site was genuine.

"We can confirm that Pottermore is indeed the name of J.K. Rowling's new project. She will be announcing it soon," she said. "It is not a new book, but we won't say more than that!"

Elizabeth Hurley and Arun Nayar Divorce Finalized!

LONDON (AFP) - Elizabeth Hurley's four-year marriage to Indian businessman Arun Nayar ended in divorce Wednesday amid continued speculation about her romance with Australian cricketer Shane Warne.

Hurley and textile tycoon Nayar were granted a divorce at a London court, although neither of them attended the hearing.

The couple married in March, 2007, in a star-studded ceremony at Sudeley Castle in southwest England, and had a second traditional Hindu ceremony at a palace in Jodhpur, northwest India.

Hurley, 46, revealed in December that she had split from Nayar, telling her followers on microblogging site Twitter: "For the record, my husband Arun and I separated a few months ago."

It came after photographs were published of the actress and Warne apparently kissing and cuddling together in London.

The cricketer, 41, reportedly met Hurley at an English race meeting in July last year and the pair have since been spotted together on several occasions.

Hurley was photographed cheering on Warne at an Indian Premier League match in northwest India in April.

Warne's romances have sparked almost as much media attention as his performance in cricket matches and his energetic love life is widely thought to have cost him the Australian captaincy.

He brought the curtain down on his two-decade career at an Indian Premier League match last month, several years after he retired from international cricket.

Hurley and actor Hugh Grant were one of Britain's leading celebrity couples in the 1990s but separated in 2000.

Cory Monteith Mans Up in Teen Romance “Monte Carlo”

Best known for playing Finn Hudson in the popular Fox series “Glee,” Cory Monteith stars with today’s teen icon Selena Gomez in “Monte Carlo,” along with “Gossip Girl’s” Leighton Meester and Katie Cassidy.

“Monte Carlo” opens us to freshly minted high school grad Grace (Selena Gomez) and best friend Emma (Katie Cassidy) jettisoning their waitress jobs in Texas for a trip to Paris. But Grace’s killjoy stepsister Meg (Leighton Meester) is involuntarily installed as chaperone by Grace’s parents. Meanwhile, Emma’s boyfriend, Owen (Cory Monteith), is trying to put the kibosh on the trip altogether with a ring and proposal.

Monteith along with the troika of actresses settled, the filmmakers believed that he fits the role of Owen perfectly. He’s a big, friendly, very funny and likable guy. He sells the character the instant he’s on screen,” says director Thomas Bezucha in casting Monteith. Below is a q&a of Cory describing his dream girl and experience in the movie.

Q. What’s your character like?
A. Owen is completely in love with Katie Cassidy’s character, Emma. He’s on a journey - and he’s chasing her across Europe so he can take her home again and marry her. He can be a little misguided, but he’s incredibly romantic and prepared to do whatever it takes to win back his girl.

Q. Which of your co stars did you bond with the most quickly?
A. I think I bonded with them all straight away! Selena is very sweet. She’s really down to earth, and excellent at doing accents. We playfight like a brother and sister - she’s tiny but determined, although she has yet to hurt me! Leighton is great, and can give a solid high five. That’s a life skill.

Q. How flirty are you?
A. I’m single, and I love that life but I’m not a dog! I’m pretty goofy and I make a lot of dumb jokes - life is too short to be serious, so I guess that’s how I flirt. To be honest, I’ve never really thought about it - I think I’m too shy and reserved to be a proper old fashioned flirt.
Q. Describe your dream girl.
A. People who are passionate are attractive - if they’re excited about their life and what they’re doing, that’s really engaging. It doesn’t matter whether they’re a movie star or an accountant. As far as looks go, I don’t have any specifics. I don’t have a preference for blondes or brunettes.
Q. Do you have a celebrity crush?
A. I’ve worked with a lot of beautiful girls, but I’d have to say Amber Riley, who plays Mercedes in Glee. Have you heard her sing? She’s amazing.

Q. What will you miss most about Monte Carlo when you’ve finished filming?
A. The bread! The bread is delicious, I can get through a lot of that stuff. The way people treat each other here is very different too. There’s a kind of old world sensibility in Europe - people are refined and respectful and it’s very cool. In North America there’s a different attitude. Everything is faster and less personal.

“Monte Carlo” opens July 1 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Alaska Earthquake Measured at Magnitude 5.2 Shakes Anchorage

Anchorage, Alaska (AP) - A powerful earthquake rocked Alaska's largest city and other parts of the state's most populated region on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake struck with a magnitude of 5.2 shortly after 11 a.m., according to seismologists at the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. It was centered about 50 miles southwest of Anchorage, said tsunami program manager Cindi Pressler.

The quake occurred 30 miles below ground and rumbled for several seconds. It will not generate a tsunami, the warning center said.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, said Anchorage police spokeswoman Anita Shell. The Anchorage Fire Department didn't even get any calls in the immediate aftermath, said dispatcher Lori Zaumseil, who shrugged off the shaker.

"This is Alaska," she said. "This is how we roll. We're tough."

The Alaska Earthquake Information Center said the event was widely felt in the Kenai Peninsula and Cook Inlet regions, with the strongest shaking occurring in the Peninsula communities of Sterling and Soldotna.

Andrew Smith, who works in payroll at Soldotna City Hall, said the shaking came in two rounds.

"At first, it felt like somebody was walking across the floor here, like walking real heavy. Then it stopped. Then was a five- or six-second delay, then it really shook."

The shaking continued 10 to 15 seconds, he said.

"I'm really quite scared of earthquakes," Smith said. "You just never know when they are going to stop or how long it's going to last."

Outside the Soldotna Fred Meyer store, Tracy Poitry was sitting in her car, eating lunch, when the vehicle began bobbing.

"I thought someone was messing with my car," said Poitry, a clerk in the store's home electronics department. For her, the quake was no big deal.

"We get pretty used to these around here," she said.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, New Al-Qaeda Leader

After Osama bin Laden's death on May 1, the world's most hunted terrorist group Al-Qaeda named its long-time second in command Egyptian Ayman al-Zawahiri to succeed bin Laden's role as the group's Chief-in-Charge.

"The general command of Al-Qaeda announces, after consultations, the appointment of Sheikh Ayman al-Zawahiri as head of the group," the extremist gourp said in statement posted on an Islamist website last Thursday.

The statement also said that under Zawahiri's leadership Al-Qaeda would relentlessly pursue its 'jihad' (holy war) against the United States and Israel.

"We seek with the aid of God to call for the religion of truth and incite our nation to fight ... by carrying out jihad against the apostate invaders ... with their head being crusader America and its servant Israel, and whoever supports them," said the statement.

The fight would continue "until all invading armies leave the land of Islam."

The extremist network affirmed that it would not "recognise any legitimacy of the so-called State of Israel."

"We will not accept or adhere to any agreement or accord that recognises it (Israel) or that robs a mile from Palestine, whether it is the United Nations controlled by top criminals or any other organisation."

Like Osama bin Laden, the 59-year-old surgeon Ayman al-Zawahiri has been hiding ever since the United States declared its war on terror after the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Ayman al-Zawahiri , now considered the United State's most wanted man, was jailed for three years in Egypt for militancy and was implicated in the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in 1981, and a 1997 massacre of tourists in Luxor.

Facing a death sentence, he left Egypt in the mid-1980s initially for Saudi Arabia, but soon headed for Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar where the resistance to the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan was based, and then to Afghanistan, where he joined forces with Osama bin Laden.
