ABS-CBN Regional Network Group Launches Choose Philippines

Posted by JED on Saturday, April 16, 2011 , under | comments (2)

It’s about time!

The ABS-CBN Regional Network Group is proud to announce the launching of Choose Philippines - the 1st ever socialnet website on travel, places, events, food and people of the Philippines. We will be going live on the 15th of April 2011.

Our travel website has the URL http://www.choosephils.com and is committed to provide accurate and up-to-date information about the places, food and culture of the Philippines from a uniquely Filipino perspective. We will achieve this through the resources of the ABS-CBN Regional Network Group and its 32 bureaus spread all over the country.

Choose Philippines also has a dedicated and very active Facebook community page with “likes” of 200,000 and still increasing everyday!

There’s more to the Philippines than just Boracay, Coron and the popular tourist destinations. Our country has 7,107 islands and we intend to comb for hidden treasures and well-kept secrets. We hope you could help us. We believe Filipinos are naturally proud of their heritage: the islands they call home, their culture and even their food that they would like to share with the world.

ABS-CBN Regional Network Group Head Jerry Bennett said Choose Philippines was built, “because we wanted everyone, both Pinoys and non-Pinoys, to experience our country.”

I love the Philippines, really! For me, it’s a country like no other. It’s my bragging right, my claim to fame that I am a Filipino. I’ve traveled this nation from north to south, east to west and I can only utter phrases of thanksgiving for the charm and the grandeur of the Philippines!” said Mr. Bennett.

World Tourism Organization statistics show there were 1 billion tourists that traveled in 2010. Thailand got 15 million visitors, Hong Kong 30 million and the Philippines, a mere 3 million.

Imagine - it is more expensive to go to Boracay than Hong Kong! Why? The Philippines lacks the infrastructure to support tourism where government should play a big role. Tourism is a growth sector that needs a lot of support.

Filipinos need not leave the country and work in distant, dangerous countries if there’s work and money to be made in their own hometown, where their families and loved ones are.

What is the answer? Tourism. Building alternative livelihood and sustainable tourism may be the answer.

Choose Philippines will support the hyper-local business ventures of our fellow Pinoys in the provinces from all the different regions by showcasing their efforts. We intend to support Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in promoting and advertising their businesses on a platform with a guaranteed and ever-growing audience.

It’s a country where the places and its people complement each other. The Filipino is hospitable second-to-none, resilient, fun-loving, hardworking, and given the right opportunities, can excel and even surpass the growth of our neighbors! And I believe that someday we will. The change has come and progress is set in motion.” Mr. Bennett said.

The RNG head also considers Choose Philippines as “a seminal event that will positively impact this generation and succeeding generations of overseas Filipinos to come here from abroad and be proud of their country, its culture and heritage, and thus bring us to greatness!”

Choose Philippines is encouraging Filipino residents and our foreign visitors to register on the website (it’s easy and it’s FREE!) and share their experiences.

We would love to hear about their travels, adventures and misadventures in their very own words: Where did they go? What can we expect (scary insects, tidal waves, the best places to eat, etc)? What do we need to bring (sandals instead of shoes, anti-mosquito lotion, etc)? How to get there and how much? Also a bit of trivia and local flavor about the place would be fantastic!

We also invite Choose Philippines users to email us their beautiful photos (high-resolution would be best!) and a short “caption-like” article about these images.

Story and photo contributions can be emailed to choosephils@gmail.com.

And please “like” our fan page “Choose Philippines” on Facebook. Invite as many of your friends to do the same! Just by doing this you are already making a difference for our country! Choose us! Choose Philippines!

‘Miracle Kid’ Fatima Soriano, Confesses on ‘The Bottomline with Boy Abunda’

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

Maria at Xyriel Ann Manabat.

Fun Facts About “Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”

Posted by JED on Friday, April 15, 2011 , under | comments (0)

Walt Disney Pictures' “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” starring Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane will sail to Philippine theaters in May 2011.

n anticipation of the film's global rollout, Disney shares some interesting, fun facts about the making of this fourth, eagerly awaited “Pirates” saga!

“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is directed by Rob Marshall of “Chicago” and “Memoirs of a Geisha” fame.

It's the first film in the “Pirates” franchise to be shot in Disney Digital 3D™, and the first all live-action, epic outdoor adventure shot on Red 3D cameras.

New characters add to the fun of the all-new story: Blackbeard (Ian McShane), the ultimate pirate villain; Angelica (Penélope Cruz), a con-artist from Jack Sparrow’s past; Syrena (Astrid Bergès-Frisbey), the mystical mermaid; and Philip (Sam Claflin), the young mysterious missionary.

For the fourth time, Geoffrey Rush reprises his role as Captain Barbossa. Until the last fim in the series, “At World’s End,” Barbossa’s first name, Hector, was never uttered by any of the characters.

Although she spent more than two months in Hawaii, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey was not permitted to have fun in the sun on her days off…as the unearthly mermaid known as Syrena, she had to maintain her pale complexion.

Keith Richards returns in a cameo as Captain Teague, Jack Sparrow’s father.

Australian Gemma Ward, who plays Tamara, one of the eight mermaids, began modeling at age 14 and has already graced over 20 Vogue covers.

The fully functional Queen Anne’s Revenge is the first historical ship to be represented in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film franchise.

World-class competitive surfer Tamayo Perry was one of six Hawaiian `Queen Anne’s Revenge' crewmen cast by director Rob Marshall.

The film represents production designer John Myhre’s fifth collaboration with director Rob Marshall. Myhre was honored with Academy Awards® for Best Achievement in Art Direction for both “Chicago” and “Memoirs of a Geisha.”

Appropriately enough for a pirate movie, the film shot on five different islands: Kauai, Oahu, Puerto Rico, Palominito (a small island off the island’s east coast), and although of a distinctly non-tropical nature, Great Britain.

It's the biggest movie to ever film at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, shooting more of the complex than any previous production.

While filming in the thick coconut grove at the famed and now shuttered Coco Palms Hotel in Wailua - where Elvis once sang “Blue Hawaii” for the movie of that title - 773 coconut palms were harvested to prevent the heavy fruits from falling on the hapless heads of cast and crew. The harvested coconuts were taken away by local residents to take full advantage of the meat and milk of the tropical fruits.

Opening across the Philippines on May 2011, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International through Columbia Pictures.

Julius Babao gets to meet one of them this Saturday, April 16, in another in-depth documentary titled “Kalbaryo” in “ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs Special Report.”

Posted by JED on , under | comments (4)

Young socialite-fashionista Isabelle Daza will be introduced as one of Kapuso's next important stars this Sunday, April 17 on Party Pilipinas.

Isabelle signed a three year exclusive contract with GMA-7 at pormal na ipakikilala bilang Kapuso sa darating na Linggo sa Party Pilipinas.

Live rin ang guesting ni Isabelle sa Showbiz Central and for sure it will be his bestfriend Raymond Gutierrez who will do her first ever interview as Kapuso star.

Ateneo Blue Eagles vs. La Salle Green Archers in Dubai

Posted by JED on Thursday, April 14, 2011 , under | comments (4)

The intense basketball rivalry between Ateneo and La Salle continues in this dazzling city in the Middle East.

Dubbed “Down the Wire,” the Blue Eagles and Green Archers will meet in a friendly match on Friday, April 15, at the Al Ahli Sports Club in Al Ghusais, Dubai.

Filipino expats in the UAE, who are avid supporters of Smart Gilas whenever they play in Dubai, are also raring to see live action between the two top rivals in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

In their battle in Dubai, the Ateneo Blue Eagles will be parading an almost intact line-up that gave them the UAAP crown for the past three years. Even though, Ryan Buenafe, last year’s UAAP Finals MVP (Most Valuable Player), will not play due to an injury, Ateneo has added to its already lethal crew Smart Gilas seven-foot center Greg Slaughter and high school standouts Kiefer Ravena, Gwyne Capacio and Cebuano Mark Tallo.

The De La Salle University Green Archers, which boast of a four-peat championship from 1999-2002 and perennial Final Four finish, also remain intact and have added former Junior Archers standouts Arnold Van Opstal, Michael Pate and Papot Paredes to their line-up consisting of Yulien Andrada, Simon Atkins, Luigi dela Paz, Nico Elorde, Sam Marata, LA Revilla, Martin Reyes, Jarelan Tampus, Maui Villanueva, Almond Vosotros and Joshua Webb.

UAE-based Filipino organizer Ramon Pizarras said he had been planning since last year to bring to Dubai the hard court rivalry between the two most prestigious and elite schools in the Philippines.

I invite all the Filipinos and other basketball-crazy expats to watch the game and see why collegiate basketball is more intense than commercial or professional basketball. The excitement level is high and competition is tough, much like the NCAA Division 1 Basketball in the US,” said Pizarras, who is also chairman of Filipino Basketball Centre in the UAE.

High school students from various Philippine schools in the Emirates will play in the curtain raiser.

United International Private School, the 2011 FISAA (Filipino Inter-School Athletic Association) champion, will face a selection from Filipino Youth Basketball League comprised of students from Far Eastern Private School, The Philippine School and New Filipino Private School.

UIPS Development & Community Relations Manager Jennifer Gonzales told ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau that watching the match between Ateneo and La Salle is beneficial to their students who will eventually go to college in the Philippines. “Feeling ng aming mga estudyante, parang nasa Pilipinas lang din sila,” she said.

The friendly match will also develop camaraderie among our students, and this will serve as an inspiration to them that they should not only excel academically but in sports as well,” Gonzales added.

Down the Wire is supported by ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel, Majestic Hotel’s Tambayan sa Kanto and the UAE Basketball Federation.

ABS-CBN Denies Pulling Demolition Job Against Willie Revillame

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

ABS-CBN has denied any involvement in the provocation of various violent reactions and investigation on Willie Revillame and his program on TV5. Willie’s camp, particularly his legal counsel Atty. Leonard De Vera, insinuated that the Kapamilya network started the big controversy regarding the episode in Willing Willie wherein a young boy danced ‘ala-macho dancer’ and given a ten thousand peso prize, now perceived by different sectors as child abuse.

The official statement released last April 13 by Bong Osorio, head of ABS-CBN Corporate Communications, reads:

We categorically deny that ABS-CBN has anything to do with the Jan-Jan episode. Records speak for itself. We are not a complainant in this case, and have not made any public statement about it.

Indeed, it is incredible that ABS-CBN, as insinuated by Atty. Leonard De Vera, can possibly have control over the countless groups and individuals who have expressed their indignation over the issue, including Facebook, Twitter, major advertisers, government bodies, the church, academic communities, among others.

It is a general accusation bereft of any details and is obviously meant to divert the issue by dragging ABS-CBN's name."

Willie has decided to temporarily pull out his show from airing while the incident is being investigated by numerous agencies which include the Movie and Television Ratings and Classification Board (MTRCB), the Commission on Human Rights, and the Kapisanan ng mga Broadcasters sa Pilipinas (KBP).

Jericho Rosales Talks About His Hollywood Film "Subject: I Love You"

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

Kapamilya prime leading man and singer Jericho Rosales can't contain his excitement over the upcoming world premiere of his first international movie, "Subject: I Love You," at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 30.

Jericho plays the lead character Victor, a Filipino computer hacker suspected of authoring the destructive "I Love You" virus at the turn of the millennium.

Jericho plays alongside Dean Cain of "Lois and Clark," Dante Basco of "Hook," Briana Evigan of "Step Up 2," and Kristin Bauer of "True Blood." Filipino artists Joel Torre, Gary Valenciano and Black Eyed Peas singer Apl De Ap are also in the film's cast. "Subject: I Love You" is directed by Francis dela Torre.

As this is Jericho's first international movie, he feels proud and excited yet humbled of this project.

"Ako syempre bilang isang simpleng Filipino actor, for me it's a dream come true," Jericho shared. On how he bagged the lead role, Jericho attended the audition here in Manila upon hearing the announcement. "It was my ex's birthday and told her that I really have to go. So, I went to the audition and I did it. It was all in English, so I had to memorize some lines, some were adlib lang," Jericho said.

Despite his solid acting experience, Jericho didn't rest on his laurels. "Siyempre, I tried my best talaga. I would talk to other people there and threw in some lines," the Green Rose lead actor added.

Upon hearing that he passed the audition, "Nagsisitalon ako sa Rockwell. I was so excited. Although independently-produced siya, the goal is to show it abroad," he shared.

Jericho also revealed he was nervous meeting his co-actors for the first time at the Edsa Shangri-la. "I was just keeping my hands under the table, hindi ako makakain. Tatlong wine ang nainom ko before ako nakakain," Jericho mused. Jericho also said he felt embarrassed when he acted like a fan in front of Dante Basco, who played Rufio in the movie "Hook." "After that, naging kaibaigan ko rin si Dante, we got close. Naging kaibigan ko rin sila Briana, Dean Cain," Jericho said.

This movie project is a dream come true for Jericho who has already acted in many local movies and TV series. "Itong "Subject: I Love You" talagang blessing sya sa akin, hulog ng langit. It was just amazing. Yung editing, ibang klase. Ito yung dream ko, seeing myself in that quality of film. I had my own trailer. I work for 12 hours, there was plenty of food. We work on time. They were super professional. I really felt like an actor, they call me Mr. Rosales."

The movie was shot in English and Jericho was asked to act normally as a Filipino who speaks English, without using slang. "Sabi nila sa'kin, they just want me to act as a Filipino na nagi-English. Inenjoy ko lang yun, para akong nasa Disneyland. So, all I had to do is to be myself there and memorize my lines. I didn't have to bring my clothes, sila na bahala doon. Just really be myself pagdating doon," Jericho added.

Jericho also shared that difference of working on a Hollywood movie as against local productions. "I wish Philippines could have money to produce those kinds of films. I wish that the support of the Filipinos will be doubled," he added.

Being able to work in an international movie for the first time, Jericho has high hopes for the local movie industry. "Request ko lang is for the government to allocate some money para rin mamatay yung piracy at makaproduce ng magagandang pelikula. Kasi kaya naman natin mag-compete eh. The world is a stage and now is the time for Filipinos to shine," Jericho said.

It’s not true at all!” Ogie Alcasid reaction on rumors saying Michael V. will be transferring to Kapatid network. “For the record, he’s not transferring to TV5 in contrast to circulating reports. He will remain a Kapuso!” he further clarified.

His screen tandem with Michael V. dates back from their earlier days in the ‘biz.

That’s why it’s not easy to let go just like that. Bitoy and I are like husband and wife. Ha-ha-ha! But seriously, he ’s not leaving me.”

Many wonder why such rumor surfaced.

Actually, I know where the issue emanated. I won’t just go into details since there’s no tinge of truth to it. What matters is Michael is still very much with GMA. His loyalty remains intact,” adds Ogie.

According to the talented singer-actor-composer, he and Michael still has a long way to go.

Whether in business or off cam, our friendship is solid. There are still a lot of things we plan to do as comic partners. In the shows we do together, we see to it that we come up with fresh conceptss. One concrete example is our characters Cheche and Bureche in Bubble Gang. It became a hit after Yaya and Angelina.

When it comes to our personal lives, we’re also inseparable. For one, we’re neighbors. He’s one of the principal sponsors during my wedding with Regine (Velasquez). Our families are close. So you see, we’ve been through a lot already and we’re not throwing it all away in an instant!

Posted by JED on , under | comments (3)

Controversial showbiz commentator Cristy Fermin refuted online posts maliciously attributing to her a statement many viewed as demeaning to women.

In her interview with TV5’s “Aksyon Journalismo” last April 11, Fermin denied she ever said, "Karangalan ng isang babae ang mabastos ni Willie,” which she purportedly made in her radio program.

Hindi para sa’kin ang magsabi na karangalan ng isang babae ang mabastos ni Willie Revillame dahil babae rin ako,” Fermin said in her interview.

Since April 10, a wildfire of reactions engulfed social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter, with netizens castigating the female TV host.

Many even went as far as questioning her credibility as a showbiz scribe and hurled foul words at her, as well as at Revillame, who’s also in hot water these days because of the controversy involving a six-year-old boy who performed a "macho dance" routine on "Willing Willie."

The controversial quote seems to have been an abridged version of a longer statement which Fermin made in TV5’s weekday showbiz talk show “Juicy” last Feb. 24, as noted user @ChuckieDreyfus’ tweet last April 10.

"Saw the video na. What was posted on twitter isnt exactly accurate." In the same post, however, he opined, "She said it differently but still very 'off' & inappropriate."

In the said clip, Fermin and her co-hosts IC Mendoza, Mo Twister, Alex Gonzaga and Shalala were discussing John Estrada’s alleged double-meaning spiels on the noontime show “Happy Yipee Yehey!”

And as Fermin clarified in the same interview with “Aksyon Journalismo,” the context of her full statement on “Juicy” pertained to the delivery of “green jokes.”

Just as Revillame has figured in many controversies of late, Puno has also recently caught the ire of some Cebu officials after he allegedly insulted the province’s governor, Gwendolyn Garcia, in a gathering.

Revillame, meanwhile, had been suspended by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board a few years back due to his “green jokes” on the now-defunct noontime show “Masayang Tanghali Bayan.”

Despite having received apparently below-the-belt attacks from Twitter users, Fermin has no plans of suing them.

Fermin also cried foul over her impostor on Twitter whom she claims used the platform to malign her name. She said that she does not utilize social media to begin with.

Here is Cristy Fermin's actual (and controversial) statement. Aired on her regular program, "Juicy" (TV5):

Warner Bros. has just shared the first trailers of two of its potential blockbusters for 2011 – the romantic comedy “Crazy Stupid Love” (http://www.youtube.com/user/WBPhilTrailers#p/u/6/WZu_8a4Nn54) and the family adventure “Dolphin Tale” (http://www.youtube.com/user/WBPhilTrailers#p/u/6/WZu_8a4Nn54).

“Crazy Stupid Love” stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and multi-platinum recording artist Josh Groban.

At fortysomething, straight-laced Cal Weaver (Carell) is living the dream - good job, nice house, great kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But when Cal learns that his wife, Emily (Moore), has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his “perfect” life quickly unravels. Worse, in today’s single world, Cal, who hasn’t dated in decades, stands out as the epitome of un-smooth.

Now spending his free evenings sulking alone at a local bar, the hapless Cal is taken on as wingman and protégé to handsome, thirtysomething player Jacob Palmer (Gosling). In an effort to help Cal get over his wife and start living his life, Jacob opens Cal’s eyes to the many options before him: flirty women, manly drinks and a sense of style that can’t be found at Supercuts or The Gap.

Meanwhile, “Dolphin Tale” is inspired by the remarkable true story of a courageous dolphin named Winter and the compassionate people who banded together to save her life.

Starring Harry Connick, Jr., Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd, the movie version centers on a boy who befriends an injured dolphin who lost her tail in a crab trap. Through their bond and friendship, the boy motivates everyone around him to help save the dolphin by creating a prosthetic appendage to replace the dolphin's tail. The marine mammal's strong survival instincts become an inspiration to people with special needs throughout the world.

“Crazy Stupid Love” will open across the Philippines in August, while “Dolphin Tale” arrives in October.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced on April 10 that Michael Shannon will star in the role of General Zod in director Zack Snyder’s new Superman film, titled “Man of Steel.”

Snyder stated, “Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role.

As General Zod, Shannon will go toe-to-toe with Henry Cavill, who plays the new Clark Kent/Superman in the film. The main cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Martha and Jonathan Kent.

Michael Shannon was honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road,” with Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Shannon was most recently seen in the award-winning HBO drama series “Boardwalk Empire,” from executive producer Martin Scorsese. He will next be seen in Sony Pictures Classics', "Take Shelter," from director/writer Jeff Nichols.

Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.

“Man of Steel” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Aljur Abrenica Parties Spent His 21st Birthday with The Orphans

Kapuso star Aljur Abrenica chose to celebrate his 21st birthday recently with less fortunate kids.

The "Machete" star decided to celebrate his special day with some orphaned children, reaching out to them by way of a feeding program. Thus, instead of a showbiz bash, he partied with angels in need at the Reception and Study Center for Children in Quezon City last March 29.

About 50 kids, two to six years old, spent that Tuesday afternoon with one of GMA Artist Center’s top attractions. Other Kapuso stars like Bella Padilla and Stef Prescott joined Aljur to the delight of the guests obviously starstruck by the presence of their idols.

The kids were not the oly ones who had a grand time as the "Starstruck IV" winner was very much overwhelmed with happiness. "I really enjoyed it!" he exclaimed.

The excitement of seeing a celebrity heartthrob made the moment unforgettable for the tots. The atmosphere was a wonderland, like a playground visited by a superhero, or in Aljur’s case, a wooden figure that came to life. One of the little boys brought the house down when he innocently quipped, "Ang gwapo ni Machete. Mas gwapo pa kay Aljur!"

No doubt Aljur has solidified his household-name status after doing the TV series "Machete." The iconic character created by Pablo Gomez was given life on the big screen by actors Gardo Versoza and Cesar Montano back in the ‘90s. Aljur’s TV take, however, refreshingly revived the people’s interest and introduced the hunk to a younger generation.

"Machete" is Aljur’s second solo project after starring in "Illumina" last year. Prior to that, he was "The Last Prince" opposite Kris Bernal. In previous years he played key roles for some of GMA-7’s hit series, including "Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan," "Dyesebel, "Boy Next Door" and "Luna Mystica."

For this highly achieving Kapampangan, it all started in 2006 when he joined the popular star-search "Starstruck" and won the "Ultimate Hunk" title. Last December, he was paired with Bianca King as he participated on the network’s Christmas reality show "Puso ng Pasko: Artista Challenge."

Back in 2007 the PMPC Star Awards for TV dubbed him as the Best New Male Television Personality. Two years later it was the turn of the Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Awards to acknowledge him as the Most Promising Male Star of Movies and TV. Then recently he was cited at the 2011 Asia Model awards for his many achievements.

Apart from being an actor, ramp and commercial model, Aljur also sings and plays musical instruments, prompting GMA Records and Sony Music to release his self-titled album in 2010. Career-wise it seems there’s no way he can go out of tune.
