GMA-7 Ends 2010 With Revenues of P14.299 Billion; Closes February With 34.2 Points vs ABS-CBN's 32 Points in NUTAM Ratings

Posted by JED on , under | comments (3)

Broadcast giant GMA Network, Inc. (GMA) remained steadfast as it capped financial performance in 2010 with revenues of P14.299 billion, half a billion higher than a year ago.

Net profits likewise registered a slight improvement at P2.821 billion, inching up 2009 profit level by P2.576 million or 0.1 percent. The Company still managed to post bottomline growth amid a slew of difficulties it encountered last year.

Consolidated airtime revenues from all platforms climbed four percent to P13.193 billion backed mostly by political advertisements during the election period, which totaled P2.054 billion as against the P636 million booked in 2009. Revenues from international and subsidiaries operations, meanwhile, grew three percent to P1.107 billion.

Flagship business unit Channel 7 chalked in the biggest revenues worth P12.213 billion, P334.06 million or three percent over the preceding year's P11.879 billion. GMA Radio inked its success story with revenues worth P535.60 million, or a sales hike of 43 percent as against 2009.

GMA International brought in subscription and advertising revenues worth P925.37 million, eight percent up from 2009's P855.18 million on strong sales in the US, Canada, Middle East, North Africa, Asia Pacific and Europe.

Total operating expenses (OPEX) were up by P619.45 million or eight percent year-on-year to P8.461 billion. Production costs went up by eight percent or P338.53 million on account of the non-recurring election coverage as well as additional in-house produced programs in the weekday late afternoon grid and the weekend flagship entertainment variety program Party Pilipinas. The weekday primetime programs also had higher programming costs relative to their counterparts from a year ago.

General and administrative expenses (GAEX) were kept at a single-digit growth of eight percent to P3.733 billion. More than one third of the hike in GAEX was due to the spike in advertising and promotions to support the blitz in the regions and to hype the Company's 60th anniversary.

The year finished with earnings before income, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) worth P4.711 billion, four percent behind 2009's P4.889 billion. But the drop in non-cash expenses drove the net income to settle at P2.821 billion.

The Company paid out cash dividends to its shareholders amounting to P1.215 billion in December. It was the second payout of dividends for 2010--the first of which amounted to P2.187 billion disbursed in May. The Company need not rely on foreign loans or external funds to run its operations - it has enough reserves and remains debt-free to-date.

GMA Chairman and CEO Atty. Felipe L. Gozon, coming from a roller-coaster-like-ride in 2010, looks forward to a much more profitable year ahead with 58 percent of revenue targets already signed at the closing of last year.

Due to the proactive stance of its marketing arm, GMA Marketing and Productions, Incorporated (GMPI) headed by President and COO Lizelle G. Maralag, the Company already booked more than P7 billion worth of sales for 2011 as of December 2010.

GMA proved it can withstand the tests of times. I am confident the hard days are over and we can look forward to better times ahead. The entire organization - with footprints in regional, national, and international markets - is upbeat to exceed the records made in 2010 this 2011," said Gozon.

GMA's international channels - GMA Pinoy TV (GPTV) and GMA Life TV (GLTV) - both recorded double-digit growth in subscriptions by end fourth quarter 2010. GPTV's subscribers were over 273,000 as of the mentioned period, up 16 percent year-on-year. Of this number, 125,000 are also subscribers of GLTV, increasing subscription rate by 17 percent from 2009.

On the other hand, GMA's syndication sales and acquisition arm, GMA Worldwide, Incorporated (GWI), sold a total of US$687,629 worth of programs in 2010 to countries in Africa, Europe, and Asia.

On television, GMA surpassed ABS-CBN in national television ratings, based on the most recent data of Nielsen TV Audience Measurement - the broadcast industry's more trusted ratings service provider.

According to the full February data [February 27 to 28 based on overnight ratings], GMA went further by 2.2 points in household audience shares in National Urban Television Audience Measurement [NUTAM] with 34.2 points versus ABS-CBN's 32 points. GMA was also ahead of TV5 even if the latter's 14.9 is doubled.

In Urban Luzon, which made up 77 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA ranked ahead of competition by huge margins. It finished its February programming with 37.9 household share points, 12.9 points away from ABS' 27 points; and 21.2 points higher than TV5's 16.7.

In viewer-rich Mega Manila, which has expanded coverage to include Batangas and Laguna since January 2011 and now comprise 58 percent of total television households nationwide, GMA had 39.4 share points, or a 14.3-point margin over ABS' 25.1 points; and 22.1 points higher than TV5's 17.3.

The Nielsen TV Audience Measurement used by GMA is used by 21 companies including two other local TV networks, namely, TV5 and Solar Entertainment; Faulkner Media; CBN Asia; 13 advertising agencies and three regional clients. On the other hand, ABS-CBN is the only local network reportedly subscribing to Kantar Media, formerly known as TNS.

GMA Engineering Group, meanwhile, administered the renovation of Studio 5 at the GMA Network Center to suit the studio requirements of GMA News TV (GNTV). GNTV is the first and only free-to-air news and public affairs channel on VHF (Very High Frequency). Because it is on free TV, viewers do not need to pay a cable service provider to get the latest news and information.

The Group also provides the technical backend in the Company's on-air operations. Just recently, it began the site preparations to run the media asset management system (MAMS) - by far the most sophisticated filing system in local broadcast bought at US$4 million. GMA Engineering likewise reinforces the Network's regional presence thru constant improvement of the signals of its 21 television stations in Luzon, 12 in Visayas, and 13 in Mindanao.

In the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), GMA Films with Imus Productions produced the top grosser Si Agimat at Si Enteng with box office receipts of about P175 million.

Solenn Heussaff Bares All in Coffee Table Book

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

Model-turned-actress-singer Solenn Heussaff has revealed that her posing nude for top Filipino photographer Mark Nicdao’s coffee table book was her idea.

In her interview aired on “Unang Hirit” on March 9, Solenn, the last woman standing on the celebrity edition of GMA-7’s “Survivor Philippines,” said she has always wanted to have “naked shots” of herself.

When I’m older I want to look back and say my body was like this or like that… kasi I’m not ready before to pose nude… so I told Mark after ‘Survivor’ [to] shoot me naked because that would be the best body shape I’ll have in my life,” she related.

The coffee table book also has Solenn on one of its eight different covers featuring other prominent celebrities.

Seemingly acknowledging that her latest venture will draw various reactions, Solenn quipped, “For me, you can say anything you want to say…

Asked what Richard Gutierrez, her onscreen leading man with whom she’s rumored to have a blossoming romance, said about her titillating photos, Solenn shared:

I made him buy it. Of course he’s also traveled before so he knows what’s raunchy and what’s classy, he knows the difference naman... He said it’s nice.

Solenn has become one of the busiest girls in showbiz since her stint on "Survivor." Apart from hosting a fashion makeover show on GMA News TV and performing on “Party Pilipinas,” Solenn is also preparing for her TV debut via “Captain Barbell.”

She is also set to take Filipino lessons this month in preparation for her role in the “Temptation Island” remake.

ABS-CBN Publishing Inc. (API) proudly launched VANTAGE, a premiere photography magazine featuring the celebrity photographs of Philippines’ renowned “master of shutters" Mark Nicdao, with an exquisite grand launch, book signing and exhibit last March 6, Sunday at the Fashion Walk of Greenbelt 5, Makati City.

VANTAGE is the first ever API title that comes with eight collector’s edition cover, showcasing photographs of the fashion and entertainment industry’s crème de la crème from 2003 to present. The eight covers flaunt radiant poses of Kris Aquino; Sarah Geronimo; John Lloyd Cruz; Jericho Rosales; Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis, KC Concepcion and Angel Locsin; Solenn Heusaff, Marian Rivera and Cristine Reyes.

In 2003, when Mark was beginning his career, I first heard of this young new photographer and I saw some of his works. One of our first collaborations was the 20-page special supplement of Metro Magazine. It was very coherent. It was something very beautiful and there’s magic on it. For a long time we’ve been wanting to showcase Mark’s work in a more permanent platform,” said ABS-CBN Publishing’s Carlo Tadiar, who’s also the Content Unit Head of VANTAGE.

There are so many people to thank for this project. I wanna thank first the one who gave me this luck - having to work with the most talented, the most beautiful, the most honest and the most real people here in Manila. I wanna thank everyone. Well, I just got out of the hospital due to stress. I had a huge migraine and now, I feel better that I see everyone here. This is my medicine,” said Mark after he was introduced.

Hosted by acclaimed events specialists Tim Yap and Mega daughter KC Concepcion, Mark Nicdao’s VANTAGE was attended by other most sought after celebrities - Georgina Wilson, Michelle Madrigal, Ruffa, Richard and Raymond Gutierrez, Kim Chiu, Angel Locsin, Anne Curtis, Jericho Rosales, Bea Alonso, Bianca King, Lovi Poe, Carla Humphries, Liz Uy and Kris Aquino. Other VIPs were also there like Wil Stein.

A walk through of Nicdao’s favorite works was offered for the guests, where he shared the inspirations and stories behind the photographs. A chronicle of Nicdao’s colorful life was also presented, followed by a silent auction and an autograph signing by the master of photography himself. Party music was brought by DJ Jujiin Samonte.

The collector's edition of Vantage will have a limited run - only 150 numbered copies printed per cover - and will be exclusively available in all Fully Booked outlets. The regular newsstand edition will be available in leading newsstands and bookstores nationwide on March 20.

"Teach Me How To Philly" A Smash Hit Online

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

I'm Phil Younghusband and today I'm gonna teach you how to 'Philly.'”

This is how Phil Younghusband, the Philippine Azkals forward player, introduces himself in his homemade video uploaded in Youtube last January 2 and now becoming viral among the Azkals fans.

The “Philly” dance tutorial shows Phil (with some of his friends and his brother James) demonstrating his infamous dance moves “Tina” which is characterized by clenched fists, two thumbs up and a shocked expression; the “Susan” by stepping left then right and the snapping of fingers; and the “Terry” by four steps to the side and the other, and leaning forward and back. Phil was then joined by some of his friends and his brother James in dancing the “Philly.”

According to Phil, he did the tutorial after he received “numerous requests” from people who complimented him on his Philly dance.

And when I was dancing in New Year's [Eve], I used three steps. I used the Tina, I used the Susan and I used the Terry. The three basic steps to 'Teach me how to Philly,'” he explained.

Kim Chiu Graduates From High School

Posted by JED on , under | comments (2)

Despite her busy showbiz schedules, Kapamilya's hottest young actress Kim Chiu has realized one of her dreams by graduating from high school recently through alternative learning studies.

She was teary-eyed when she gave her commencement exercise speech. “Lagi nating tatandaan na ang kahalagahan ng buhay ay hindi lang natin mararating sa ating sarili. Libre hong mangarap...pinangarap kong makapagtapos ng pag-aaral at ito, natapos ko na kaya congratulations po sa ating lahat,” she said.

She related how her grandmother wished for her to finish school even while she's in show business.

And eto na, may gift na ako sa kanya,” she said.

Earning a high school diploma entailed a lot of hard work and sacrifices for Kim, who juggled school work with taping, shooting, guesting schedules.

‘Pag dinner break nag-aaral na lang or after kong basahin ‘yung buong script nagbabasa na lang ako ng mga lessons ko. Kapag walang work nag-aaral ako, ganyan, nagre-review para sa exam.

Kim wanted to prove something to herself, that “hindi biro ‘yung showbiz to education.

She rationalized how she was driven to pursue her studies.

Kim intends to pursue a business course in college.

Japan Eathquake Update: Massive 8.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan; Tsunami Warning Issued Including The Philippines

Posted by JED on , under | comments (8)

An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit Japan early Friday, March 11, triggering tsunami warnings and sending people fleeing out of buildings in the capital.

Its epicenter was 373 kilometers (231 miles) from Tokyo, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake rattled buildings and toppled cars off bridges and into waters underneath. In Tokyo, crowds gathered in the streets and tried to reach relatives via cell phone.

Scenes inside office buildings showed papers strewn all over the floor and people clinging onto seats and desks.

Such a large earthquake at such a shallow depth creates a lot of energy, said Shenza Chen of the U.S. Geological Survey.

A tsunami in the Pacific was moving closer to other shorelines in other countries, according to CNN metereologist Ivan Cabrera.

It triggered tsunami warnings for various countries, including Japan and Russia, the National Weather Service said.

"Earthquakes of this size are known to generate tsunamis potentially dangerous to coasts outside the source region," it said.

"Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter."

The quake was the latest in a series in the region this week.

Early Thursday, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu.

A day earlier, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck off of Honshu, the country's meteorological agency said.

The Wednesday quake lasted as long as three minutes, but did not cause significant damage. It could be felt in Tokyo, 267 miles (429 kilometers) southwest of its epicenter.- Tokyo (CNN)

Philippine Update:

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised tsunami alert level 1 after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck the east coast of Japan Friday afternoon.

Phivolcs said no evacuation order is in effect but communities along the east coast of the country are advised to wait for further information and prepare for possible evacuation.

Coastal areas fronting the Pacific Ocean of the following provinces should keep watch:

Batanes Group of Islands

Cagayan

Ilocos Norte

Isabela

Quezon

Aurora

Camarines Norte

Camarines Sur

Albay

Catanduanes

Sorsogon

Northern Samar

Eastern Samar

Leyte

Southern Leyte

Surigao del Norte

Surigao del Sur

Davao Oriental

Davao del Sur

Executive Director Benito Ramos of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said he has alerted all provincial and regional disaster coordinating councils to stay on alert in case the Japan quake affects the Philippines.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police were also placed on standby in case of evacuation of residents living in the eastern coast of the country.

The United States Geological Survey said the magnitude 8.8 quake struck 81 miles east of Sendai, Honshu.

The quake shook buildings in the capital Tokyo, causing "many injuries," at least one fire and triggering a 10-meter (30-foot) tsunami warning, NHK television and witnesses reported.

The public broadcaster showed black smoke billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted.

Television showed cars bobbing in water along side fishing boats. A 50 cm tsunami hit Japan's northern coast.

"The building shook for what seemed a long time and many people in the newsroom grabbed their helmets and some got under their desks," Reuters correspondent Linda Sieg said.

"It was probably the worst I have felt since I came to Japan more than 20 years ago."

Japan's northeast Pacific coast, called Sanriku, has suffered from quakes and tsunamis in the past and a 7.2 quake struck on Wednesday. In 1933, a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people. Last year fishing facilities were damaged after by a tsunami caused by a strong tremor in Chile.

Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world's most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater. - ABS-CBN

The video, which tells the story of a young woman leaving for Hollywood to make it big - charting her struggles and successes as she follows her dreams, was directed by Wayne Isham, who also helmed Michael’s 1995 video shoot for “You Are Not Alone”.

Michael Jackson Hollywood Tonight - Music Video and Lyrics:

Lipstick in hand
Tahitian tanned
in her painted on jeans

She dreams of fame
She changed her name
To one that fits the movie screen
She's headed for the big time, that means

She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
It's true, that you, may never ever have that chance again

West bound Greyhound
To tinsel town
Just to pursue her movie star dreams
She's giving hot tricks to men
just to get in
When she was taught that that's not clean
She's headed for the big time, that means

She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
It's true, that you, may never ever have that chance again (that chance again)

[Spoken words:]
She gave up her life, to follow her dreams
Left behind everything, for the movie scene
Nothing more she could want, she was determined to follow her plan
She wanted Hollywood, she wanted it bad
Now that she got her dream, she became a star
It all looked so good, but only good from afar
Imprisoned in every paparazzi's camera, every guy wished they could
Now it's back to reality, for Ms. Hollywood

Lipstick in hand
Tahitian tanned
in her painted on jeans

She dreams of fame
She changed her name
To one that fits the movie screen
She's headed for the big time, that means

She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
She's going Hollywood
She's going Hollywood tonight
It's true, that you, may never ever have that chance again (that chance again)

(You know it baby)
West bound Greyhound
To tinsel town
Just to pursue her movie star dreams

West bound Greyhound
To tinsel town
Just to pursue her movie star dreams

(You know it baby)
West bound Greyhound
To tinsel town
Just to pursue her movie star dreams

West bound Greyhound
To tinsel town
Just to pursue her movie star dreams

The all-time favorite noontime show game once again enlivens nation.

ABS-CBN’s current noontime offering Happy Yipee Yehey! proudly brings back the all-time favorite game Pera O Bayong. It can be recalled that Pera O Bayong first conquered the nation in Magandang Tanghali Bayan (MTB). This noontime craze continued even in the succeeding noontime shows of the Kapamilya Network. All this success proves that ABS-CBN has always been the pioneer in creating more exciting and well-loved noontime games.

Whopping prizes and excitement are of course, the gifts of the game. With the humorous hosting of noontime show veterans John Estrada, Toni Gonzaga, Randy Santiago and Mariel Rodriguez, Happy Yipee Yehey! wants to make Pera O Bayong merrier and more colorful. The four hosts admit they’re quite confident with the output of the game, especially because it’s ABS-CBN’s brainchild.

John said he’s always excited to bargain with the contestants. “Ilang araw pa lang nagbabalik ang Pera O Bayong, may nanalo agad ng malaking papremyo. Noong isang araw, may nanalo ng P100,000. At alam kong sobrang nabago ang buhay ng taong iyon. Kaya lalong nakakataba ng puso, lalo’t alam mong may natutulungan yung ginagawa mo.”

Meanwhile, last Saturday, the audience kept on cheering during the much-awaited performance of Sexbomb Dancers in Happy Yipee Yehey! Bianca Gonzalez Receives Libelous Messages From Basher on Twitter

Posted by JED on Thursday, March 10, 2011 , under | comments (0)

Twitter is fast becoming a freedom wall of some showbiz fans, wherein ang latest subject of "bashing" ay si Bianca Gonzalez.

Weeks ago, isang supporter ng Philippine Azkals forward na si Phil Younghusband ang nagkaroon ng heated online argument with Kapamilya actress Angelica Panganiban, who posted her opinion about Phil's reported entry to showbusiness.

And just last Saturday, March 5, another Tweeter account with the handle @Kristina_PJ and registered under the name Yzabelle Aquino - ang nag-post ng isang threat sa timeline ng SNN co-host.

Here's what @Kristina_PJ said: "fyi, malapit na matapos ang career ni @iamsuperbianca with the video we are soon to upload."

Yzabelle Aquino's last post was in January of 2009. But after almost a year, she again became active on Twitter. As of this time, she already have 126 messages including a call to help her lambaste Bianca.

@Kristina_PJ introduces herself as Bianca's classmate in high school sa De La Salle Santiago Zobel School. There is also one message wherein sinabi din nyang classmate siya ni Bianca sa Ateneo de Manila University in college .

She further mentioned na ang reason why she is doing this to Bianca ay dahil sa isang incident that involved her and Bianca during their high school days. Not didn't clarified kung ano ito.

"@iamsuperbianca it seems you have forgotten what you did to me way back in highschool at Zobel. now its my turn," she twitted last January 11.

Last January 25, she posted na she worked at ABS-CBN: "i got to know the real Bianca Gonzalez when I am still working at ABS so I have the right to bash that [expletive words]."

Aside sa tweets, she also uploaded a sexy photo of Bianca last March 5 addressed to some Twitter users including Bianca's current flame - PBA player JC Intal with an additional threat "i am going to upload the video soon on how a [expletive word] she is!"

Despite the continuous harmful words being written about her by @Kristina_PJ on Twitter, Bianca remains calm and instead calls for peace, love and happiness: "Some people have lots of free time and yun ang trip nila? tayo, let's just be happy. that's what they want to happen. let them be na lang. dun sila masaya eh." she asked her supporters.

Bianca also releases a statement through Backroom's Mary Ann Sta. Ana. Here's what she said:

"Before answering, i made sure i was aware of all the tweets of @Kristina_pj or Yzabelle Aquino so i took a screen capture of all her posts. As much as i try to recall i don't think i have met Yzabelle. Her posts say she met me high school, then college, then at work, so I'm not really sure which of those it is.

"If it is true that i have wronged her, i do hope i get to meet her personally to fix things, because that's always the best way for people to resolve things.

"The photo posted on her twitter page that she sent to other twitter users isn't a stolen sexy photo of me but a photo from a fashion editorial of Preview magazine a few years ago. :-)

"I don't know where she heard that I've said bad things about Cristine R, Angelica P, Sarah G as her tweets say, because i never have and in fact i admire these girls! I of course have not said anything bad against Toni G, who is a sister to me.

"I am all for freedom of expression and opinion on twitter and other social networking sites, i too post whatever opinion i have and we are all free to do so.
"But this great freedom also comes with a huge responsibility. Posting tweets with curse words or foul language and posting tweets to purely malign someone crosses the line to irresponsibility.

"I hope everyone can use social media as the great tool it is for development, connectivity, and change. :-) Peace, love, happiness! :-)"

Afraid of legal case that might be filed against her, Bianca's "hater" now becomes her "admirer." In a message sent by @Kristina_PJ, she expressed how she admires and appreciates the way Bianca handled the situation.

"sorry for the late response. honestly, i have nothing against Bianca. trip ko lang talaga na asarin siya or magpapansin something like that! i find her kasi so perfect. yung tipong walang bad blood in her. plus i got bored so i decided to create an account at twitter. another reason why i sent those hate tweets for Bianca Gonzalez is to test her patience, and how she deals with basher. and to be honest i admire her after that. hindi siya pumatol sa mga tweets ko and instead sent me a DM with no hatred at all. her DM to me was so nice and from their you can tell na she do have breeding and class." Yzabelle Aquino said. - PEP
