Ms. Susan Roces To Star in TV5’s First Primetime Drama Series 'Babaeng Hampaslupa'

The Queen of Philippine Movies once again shares her acting brilliance on the small screen via Babaeng Hampaslupa. This marks Ms. Susan Roces’ first-ever project on TV5 where she topbills - together with Alice Dixson and Alex Gonzaga - the very first drama series of the network.

With over 50 years of unparalleled stardom on the local scene, Ms. Susan Roces is highly placed alongside the country’s showbiz stalwarts, including her late husband, the King of Philippine Movies Fernando Poe, Jr., and the King of Comedy Dolphy.

In Babaeng Hampaslupa, Ms. Susan Roces plays a major role as Helena See, a strong-willed Chinese tycoon who conceals a soft spot for those who strive to get more from life. Through their exceptional characters, Ms. Susan Roces, Alice Dixson and Alex Gonzaga represent the continued quest for hope, love and ambition.

Ms. Susan Roces landed her first starring role in the movie "Boksingera Daw" (1956) with Luis Gonzales. Following its success, the Queen has since teamed up with the biggest names during the golden years of showbiz such as Juancho Gutierrez, Jose Mari Gonzales, Romeo Vasquez, and Eddie Gutierrez. She staged a movie comeback in the second instalment of Chinese-themed flick "Mano Po" (2003) from Regal Entertainment.

Helmed by Eric Quizon and Joyce Bernal, Babaeng Hampaslupa leads primetime viewing starting February. The series also assembles an impressive cast with some of the country’s finest actors and actresses like Jay Manalo, Bing Loyzaga, Freddie Webb and Celso Ad Castillo; and younger stars such as Karel Marquez, Alwyn Uytinco, Vandolph, Jenny Quizon, and Martin Escudero.

Alex Gonzaga’s Character Caught Between Two Loves in TV5’s 'Babaeng Hampaslupa'

Alex Gonzaga’s star gets a notch shiner in the entertainment industry as she ventures into serious acting in TV5’s first primetime drama, Babaeng Hampaslupa.

The public first witnessed her acting potential in the hit youth-oriented show BFGF where she plays the role of Yaya Claring, a modern-day Cinderella who falls head over heels in love with her knight/master Sir Kean (Kean Cipriano). Prior to this project, Alex has already proven her flexibility as a total entertainer - a comic princess in LokomokoU, a multi-talented performer in P.O.5 and the bubbly host of gossip show Juicy. With four regular shows that require talent and flexibility, Alex Gonzaga is undeniably the most visible face on TV today.

In what could be her biggest break yet, the young actress is set to play the role of Grace, a woman of both charm and fighting spirit from the slums of Tondo. Day by day, the hills of garbage have provided food on their table: a clear picture of poverty which drives Grace to strive and find their way out of an impoverished life. And soon enough, she would discover the world that links to her real identity.

But despite the glaring reality in a shanty town like Baseco, the series finds deeper sense of relationship grown out of poverty with Grace and Nato (Alwyn Uytingco), her ingenious best friend through ups and downs. As they promised to fight life’s imbalance, Nato has found himself secretly in love with Grace.

Fate brings Grace to another world where she crosses paths with Andrew (Martin Escudero), an aspiring young entrepreneur who works relentlessly to prove himself to his foster family, Helena (Ms. Susan Roces) and Anastacia See (Alice Dixson). Just when he is slowly getting into Grace, Stephanie (Karel Marquez), enters the scene and claims her stake of Andrew’s affection.

Babaeng Hampaslupa is the second project of Alex and Alwyn together. Their first team-up on BFGF (Alwyn was introduced as a new twist in the love story of Yaya Claring and Sir Kean) has earned positive feedbacks from the viewers. Meanwhile, the series marks the first project of Alex and Martin together following the latter’s recent transfer to the Happy Network.

Will Grace settle for the man she has been with through hard times? Or she will fall for the one who might be holding the key to her real identity. Find out this February 7 in Babaeng Hampaslupa only on TV5.

John Estrada and Randy Santiago To Host ABS-CBN's New Noontime Game Show; Willie Revillame Mad About It

Willie Revillame put himself again in another controversy involving his former home studio ABS-CBN.

During his live birthday celebration last January 26, 2011 on "Willing Willie", Willie aired his anger over longtime friends John Estrada and Randy Santiago for allegedly closing a deal with ABS-CBN to host a new afternoon game show with Kapamilya female stars Mariel Rodriguez and Toni Gonzaga.

According to Willie, Randy and John are fully aware that he already lobbied an afternoon game show to TV5's big bosses Manny Pangilinan and Atty. Rey Espinosa which the two will be co-hosting.

If the ABS-CBN show pushes through, Willie will have no choice but to withdraw his place as Best Man on John's wedding to Priscilla Meirelles this February. Aside from that, Willie also threatened John that he will campaign for Eat Bulaga! just to make sure that John and Randy's new show a flop.

MYXposed: Much Has Been Said (The Story Of Bamboo) Documentary To be Aired on MYX

MYX, the No. 1 music channel in the Philippines, proudly airs MYXposed: Much Has Been Said (The Story Of Bamboo), a 30-minute documentary featuring the story behind the phenomenal success and recent disbandment of one of the most influential bands in the country, on January 29, Saturday, 12 p.m.

Bamboo is considered as one of the most popular Filipino rock bands which has surfaced after the great local alternative music in the Philippines was born. With Bamboo's two hit albums titled As The Music Plays and Light Peace Love, which contain both of their hit singles "Noypi" and "Hallelujah," the band gave birth to songs with inspiring fanatical anthems.

Fans were saddened as lead vocalist Bamboo Mañalac posted a statement posted on their official website. He said their decision to disband was not easy. "As a group we've come to a point where you have to trust your gut, your heart and your head and accept that all things change. The hardest part as always is to know when to pack it up and part ways."

Bamboo was founded in 2002 by Bamboo Mañalac and Nathan Azarcon who are both former members of Rivermaya. When Bamboo came home from the U.S., Nathan introduced him to guitarist Ira Cruz and drummer Vic Mercado who had played in Passage before and the rest was history.

Catch MYXposed: Much Has Been Said (The Story Of Bamboo) on January 29 at 12 p.m., only on the No. 1 Music Channel in the Philippines, MYX.

'The Rite' Was Inspired By a Priest Who Attended Exorcism School in Rome

Exorcists and the darkness they witness firsthand have long held a cultural fascination, regardless of one's faith or background. Interest in them is bound to get more fervent with the release of New Line Cinema's new supernatural thriller The Rite, which deals with the controversial topic of exorcism.

Director Mikael Håfström attests, "There is universal interest in the rite of exorcism. Much of it comes from religion, but a lot also comes from popular culture, with The Exorcist, from back in the '70s, still being the most famous film about this phenomenon. All over the world, people are drawn to the subject, despite the fact - or perhaps even because - it can't be proven or entirely understood. The more you look into it, the more you see there are no easy answers."

Inspired by true events, The Rite follows skeptical seminary student Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue), who reluctantly attends exorcism school at the Vatican. While in Rome, he meets an unorthodox priest, Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), who introduces him to the darker side of his faith.

The story of The Rite began as a book proposal by Matt Baglio, a reporter living in Rome, who was struck by the Vatican's 2007 announcement of its initiative to reinstruct the clergy on the rite of exorcism with the goal of installing an exorcist in every diocese worldwide.

When Baglio's 10-page proposal found its way to the producers, they were immediately intrigued. Producer Beau Flynn relates, "Matt heard about an exorcism school that was opening in the Vatican and became fascinated by that concept. And in the course of his investigation, he met an American priest who was undergoing this training. So, rather than an article, Matt decided to write a book."

The result was The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist, which chronicles the events that inspired the film. "Exorcism itself is something that few people are privy to," says Baglio. "I wanted to not only understand it myself but also to unlock the mystery for others. I met an American priest, Father Gary Thomas, who'd come to the Regina Apostolorum Seminary in Rome to learn and become an exorcist, and his experiences informed the central character of Michael Kovak in the script."

Producer Tripp Vinson offers, "When you make a movie like this, you need to treat the subject seriously and with absolute respect. Dealing with really big themes like good and evil, you don't have to add a lot of bells and whistles. The truth is more compelling than anything we can make up."

The producers enlisted screenwriter Michael Petroni to adapt the concept into a screenplay, even as Baglio was writing his book. "People are fascinated by the subject of possession because its existence remains an unanswered question," says Petroni. "The story was thoroughly researched through interviews with priests and chronicles of real experiences, and what they witnessed was frightening."

Father Gary, now a Northern California pastor and exorcist who served as a consultant on the film, explains, "The rite of exorcism has been in effect since 1614. And yet, many bishops and priests have no idea what to expect in an exorcism, except that it has to do with Satan. The opportunity that I had to train in Rome provided me with great grounding, insofar as I was able to work alongside an experienced exorcist and ask clarifying questions. What really resonated with me is the fact that it is a healing ministry and gives priests like me an opportunity to help people who are truly suffering."

Håfström was intrigued by the notion of exploring the subject of exorcism with such a solid basis in fact. "It's not a straightforward horror movie," he notes. "It's a fictional film but within a very real and factual framework. When I read the script, I felt it approached the whole idea of demonic possession from an angle we haven't really seen before, and it draws you into this world in such a suspenseful, powerful and entertaining way."

Opening across the Philippines on February 2, New Line Cinema's The Rite will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Jake Gyllenhaal Portrays a Viagra Sales Representative in 'Love & Other Drugs'

Taking control when the ultimate men's drug Viagra was finally introduced to the public in the '90s, Jake Gyllenhaal suits up as one hot pharmaceutical rep whose charm with women is as high as his monthly sales quota in the film 'Love & Other Drugs'.

Starring opposite Anne Hathaway as Maggie in Love & Other Drugs, Jake plays Jamie Randall whose account is based on the nonfiction book by Jamie Reidy who chronicles his experiences as a Viagra salesman for pharmaceutical giant Pfizer. The film's co-scribe and producer Charles Randolph who first got hold of the book finds it very intriguing, "Jamie wrote about experiences I thought were analogous to films like Jerry Maguire, Wall Street or any movie where a young man goes into the workplace with ideas of what the world is going to be and the world beats them out of him," recalls Randolph.

Director Zwick says the roles of Jamie and Maggie represent significant steps for the two actors. "[As Jamie] Jake's not just romantic, interesting and charming, he's enormously funny. Jake's sense of humor is nothing new to those who've known him socially, but up to now we've never quite had the opportunity to see that on film. He has a great leading man quality and is extraordinarily at ease, and that comes of maturity and experience. Jake's work in this film allows us to witness a younger actor become a leading man, and that's very exciting for a filmmaker and, I think, an audience."

Gyllenhaal's Jamie is the black sheep in a successful family. He's the ultimate seducer, and would have been perfectly happy to float through life minus the burden of responsibility or connecting to anyone...until he meets Maggie. "He's bright but a bit self-destructive," says the actor. "He's content to be successful with his life as a salesman of a revolutionary drug - a job for which he's perfectly suited - and continue to succeed at fake connections. He's an expert at those because he's a great performer. "

"The movie is set in the late '90s, a moment," says Zwick, "when the fabric of American life changed forever" because for the first time, drugs became commercialized. At the top of the sales and advertising charts was a little blue pill called Viagra, a new treatment for erectile dysfunction. Viagra's blockbuster sales trigger Jamie's ascension to the top of the heap as a Big Pharma sales rep. Then, because of Jake's relationship with Maggie, he goes deeper into the world of medicine and drugs and the different strands of the story knit together and, I hope, resonate off each other."

Jake's discerning performance in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain garnered him nomination nods from Oscar and SAG AwardTM. He then emerged as 2006's Best Supporting Actor in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) and the National Board of Review. His diverse film credits include Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Brothers, Rendition, Zodiac, Jarhead, Proof, The Good Girl, Moonlight Mile, Lovely and Amazing, Donnie Darko and October Sky.

Love & Other Drugs opens January 26 in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Anne Curtis and Luis Manzano's Characters Have a Mix-up in The Movie 'Who's That Girl?'

Real life best friends Anne Curtis and Luis Manzano get romantic on the silver screen in Who's That Girl, Viva's first offering for 2011. Directed by MMFF 2010 Best Director Wenn V. Deramas, the genius behind giant blockbuster movies, like the Ang Tanging Ina trilogy and Petrang Kabayo, this movie collaboration with award-winning writer Ms. Mel Mendoza-Del Rosario shows how people can create an impact in our lives, and how a single mistake can be life-altering.

Anne Curtis is Bea, a wallflower, while Luis Manzano is John Eduque, a campus heartthrob who is Bea's ultimate crush. John hardly takes notice of Bea. But one day at her lowest, John surprisingly gives Bea a pep talk. This becomes life-changing for her.

Bea transforms into a beautiful and successful career woman and John remains her dream man. So when she reads his name in the obituary, Bea is shattered with grief and goes to the wake in hysterics to the shock of everyone. It turns out that the deceased is John Eduque Sr., John's father. Realizing her mistake, Bea hurriedly leaves, unaware of the damage she has caused especially on the widow, played by Eugene Domingo. Thinking that Bea is the mistress of the deceased, Mrs. Eduque succumbs to depression. Seeing his mother's misery, John looks for Bea to rectify the situation. But the revenge ploy backfires as he falls in love with her. Fearing his mother's reaction becomes a dilemma.

Renowned artists Ms. Dina Bonnevie, Dennis Padilla, and Candy Pangilinan render their support in this feel-good movie. Also starring DJ Durano, Dino Imperial, Abby Bautista, Nadine Lustre, Bobby Yan, Joy Viado, Ricky Rivero, Mac-Mac, and John Lapus.

Who's That Girl opens in theaters on March 2, 2011. Produced by Viva Films and co-presented by SM Development Corporation.

Lightning McQueen (aka Lightning)

Number 95 Lightning McQueen is still a hotshot racecar, but his rookie days are past him. Now a permanent resident of Radiator Springs, Lightning has become a bona fide worldwide celebrity as winner of four Piston Cups.

After his latest win, Lightning returns home to enjoy life in the slow lane for a while with sweetheart Sally, best friend Mater and the rest of his Radiator Springs family. His off-season is unexpectedly cut short when Mater inadvertently prompts Lightning to enter the World Grand Prix, a high profile, three-part exhibition race that will take him around the globe.

With a fresh custom paint job and real, working headlights, Lightning sets off to Japan, Italy and England with Mater in tow for the adventure of a lifetime. But competing against the fastest cars in the world tests more than his racing skills when Lightning realizes his wide-eyed best friend may not be the pit chief nor ambassador he needs to navigate the unfamiliar international terrain.

Radiator Springs resident Luigi is a big-hearted, gregarious and excitable Italian Fiat 500. A tire virtuoso and owner of Luigi’s Casa Della Tires, he and his sidekick Guido join Lightning and Mater as members of Team Lightning McQueen for the World Grand Prix. Luigi is also an aficionado and fanatic for all things Italian, and is particularly enchanted with Ferrari race cars. When the competition takes the team to his hometown of Porto Corsa, Italy, Luigi is over the moon to introduce the Radiator Springs crew to his charming village and the wonderful ways of Italy. His family welcomes the gang from Radiator Springs in a big, passionate Italian way: Amore!

Guido, the little Italian forklift, is the backbone of Casa Della Tires. He’s Luigi’s assistant and best friend, and together they are the biggest Ferrari racing fans in Carburetor County. A car of few English words other than “pit stop,” Guido is a force to be reckoned with when he’s changing tires in the pits during a race. Joining Team Lightning McQueen for the World Grand Prix, Guido will get to show off his turbo-charged, pedal-to-the-metal pit stops on the global stage…and maybe, just maybe, he’ll see some Ferraris!

Radiator Springs’ resident hippie Fillmore is an easy-going, peace-loving 1960s Volkswagen van. And as his friend and neighbor Sarge likes to say, “once a hippie, always a hippie.” At his popular shop Fillmore’s Organic Fuel, Fillmore brews his own fuel, which he sells with Bohemian accessories like tie-dyed mud flaps. But when he learns that the World Grand Prix will be run exclusively on the alternative fuel Allinol, Fillmore closes up shop and signs on as the fuel expert for Team Lightning McQueen.

Green Army Jeep Sarge is a patriotic veteran who runs the Radiator Springs Army surplus store, Sarge’s Surplus Hut. Sarge’s no-nonsense attitude often leads to bickering with his hippie friend, neighbor and polar opposite, Fillmore. Despite their differences, the two are almost inseparable – even throughout their world travels. A security specialist with military connections around the globe, Sarge joins Lightning and Mater at the World Grand Prix as a member of Team Lightning McQueen.

Mack is Lightning McQueen’s trusted long-haul driver, crisscrossing the country from race to race, always with a smile on his grill. After dropping Lightning off in Radiator Springs with his fourth Piston Cup championship trophy, Mack sets off with the rest of the pit crew for a well-deserved vacation. Who knew that Lightning would end up jetting off to a race around the globe in the World Grand Prix.

In the now popular tourist destination of Radiator Springs, the rusty old tow truck Mater has a number of roles, including proprietor of Tow Mater Towing and Salvage, grand storyteller and the heart and soul of the town. But Mater’s favorite title is best friend to Lightning McQueen. Mater values each and every dent he’s earned on his escapades with Lightning over the years, and anxiously awaits further fun with his friend when Lightning returns with his latest Piston Cup.

Cheerful, honest and loyal to a fault, Mater rushes to his best friend’s defense, which ultimately lands the off-duty Lightning in an international racing exhibition: the World Grand Prix. When Lightning invites Mater to come along as a member of his pit crew, Mater leaves Carburetor County for the first time ever.

Not long after their arrival in Tokyo, Mater learns that the world outside of Radiator Springs is decidedly different and its newfangled ways may take some getting used to. But when he’s mistaken for an American secret agent, he falls into an intriguing adventure of his own. Caught between supporting his best friend on a globe-trotting racing competition and his new role in international espionage, Mater ends up in an explosive chase through the streets of Tokyo and Europe alongside a team of British spies and international bad guys.

Sally, a baby blue Porsche 911 Carrera, is the proprietor of Radiator Springs’ Cozy Cone and Wheel Wagon Motels and the apple of Lightning McQueen’s eye. Longing for Lightning’s return from his latest Piston Cup race season, Sally is looking forward to a long drive with “Stickers,” as she affectionately calls Lightning.

When Lightning commits to racing in the World Grand Prix the same night of his return, Sally remains steadfastly supportive of her star racecar. She even convinces Lightning to take his best friend Mater along for the ride of a lifetime. Though Sally stays behind in Radiator Springs, even she lights up for the open-wheeled racing cars from Europe – but only Lightning truly makes her motor purr.

Ramone owns and operates Ramone's House of Body Art, Radiator Springs’ custom body and paint shop. Ramone is an artist — a true magician with paint and metal. There was a time when his only canvas was himself, so he repainted himself daily. But since Lightning McQueen helped put Radiator Springs back on the map, Ramone has had his share of customers—including the star race car himself. Before heading off to the World Grand Prix, Lightning stops by Ramone’s for a new paint job...and Ramone does him up gooood.

is a sassy, no-nonsense lady with the biggest heart in Radiator Springs. She runs the local diner, Flo's V-8 Café, the only gas station for miles around, where she still serves the "finest fuel in 50 states." Flo is Ramone’s main squeeze. As a touring Motorama girl in the 1950s, Flo was passing through Radiator Springs and when she met Ramone, she was hooked.

Sheriff is the local law enforcement and the keeper of the peace in Radiator Springs. He takes his job very seriously. Sheriff enjoys telling stories and taking the occasional nap behind the Radiator Springs billboard. That's where he was when Lightning McQueen first zoomed into town years ago, which led to a messy car chase that didn’t end well. These days, Sheriff welcomes the hotshot racer Lightning home to Radiator Springs with all four tires.

Lizzie is a Radiator Springs original. She’s a little old lady, but still an active businesswoman who uses her moxie to sell bumper stickers, mud flaps and other Route 66 memorabilia from her curio shop. She’s as feisty as she is brash. Lizzie’s unswerving frankness and offbeat comments keep the townsfolk and tourists on their toes, even though she has no idea what she's just said.
