Posted by JED on , under | comments (5)

Jasmine Curtis-Smith, the younger sister of Kapamilya actress Anne Curtis will be the new face of TV5 in 2011.

One of the most sought-after new faces in showbiz is now a Kapatid! Jasmine signed a three-year contract with TV5 last Monday, December 20. She is touted to be TV5’s face of 2011 as she teams up with Prince of Primetime JC de Vera for a major project.

While other networks also sent feelers to get Jasmine as contract star, she opted to become a Kapatid. “I’m very happy to have finally settled here in TV5. The management gives me the best of both worlds: my studies and career. I can balance it out. They care about my career as well as my education,” said Jasmine in an interview after she signed up with TV5.

Although the Fil-Aussie teen star finally gave the nod to her showbiz calling, Jasmine still wants to prioritize her education, which the TV5 management fully supports. “We want only the best for Jasmine. Even at a young age she’s mature enough to set her priorities. Her growing fan base looks up to her because her beauty and wit merit their admiration,” said Perci Intalan, TV5 Head of Creative and Entertainment Production.

Present in the contract signing were Jasmine’s manager Betchay Vidanes and co-manager for endorsements Pia Campos, along with TV5 executives Atty. Ray Espinosa, President and CEO; Mr. Roberto Barreiro, Executive Vice President and COO; Atty. Christine Ona, Legal Department Head; and Perci Intalan, Creative and Entertainment Production Head.

The Happy Network is brewing a grand acting debut for Jasmine with JC de Vera in the TV remake of ’90s hit action film “Ang Utol kong Hoodlum” which was topbilled by Robin Padilla and Vina Morales. Some scenes of the series will be shot in Australia, where Jasmine is currently studying. Exciting projects are now also in the works for the younger Curtis on TV5.

Having made waves when she first appeared on PO5 last Dec 19, TV5 welcomes the new year with its newest face as Jasmine dances on the stage of weekend top-rater Talentadong Pinoy this Saturday, January 1, 2011.

12 New Stars To Watch in 2011

Posted by JED on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 , under | comments (9)

Jasmine Curtis

PEP once again released their choice of twelve up and coming young showbiz stars to surely make it big in 2011 - if only given the right opportunity. Some in the list are new to the industry while some have been around for some time but only now are they being given the time to shine.

Those who made it in the list were chosen based on the following:

* PEP editorial team recalled the newbies whose careers were given a boost this year

* Their popularity meter among the masses

* Personal choice of some showbiz denizens on who will most likely to be given a break next year

So, here is the list of young showbiz stars that will surely make an impact in 2011:

1. Andi Eigenmann. How do you make a name for yourself when your closest kin belong to the talented elite in show business? It's not easy. Andi had to prove by her acting ability that she’s not just “the daughter” of Mark Gil and Jacklyn Jose. After joining reality TV shows, Andi was cast in the main role for Agua Bendita.

The 20-year-old newbie’s efforts paid off as ABS-CBN slated her for more serious roles, aside from TV guestings.

Next year Andi is scheduled to appear in another lead role for the fantasy series Galema: Anak ni Zuma.

2. Jillian Ward. This five-year-old talent is simply adorable!

Jillian’s spontaneity and wit, which she expresses in that cutesy voice of hers, makes her perfect for mass audiences to love.

Jillian started in Eat…Bulaga! as a contestant. She caught the eye of producers and they gave her a role as Daldanika in The Last Prince. Her natural personality in Trudis Liit was the turning point of her career as the show’s success gave way to more projects.

Next year will be quite fruitful for Jillian, we daresay. In fact, she's gearing up to become "assistant" to Captain Barbell.

3. Kathryn Bernardo. We saw Kathryn in the early years of this decade when she appeared as Bulinggit alongside Judy Ann Santos in Krystala. Since then she was cast in minor child roles in both ABS-CBN and GMA-7.

She turned heads this year, however, with her role as the young Marian Rivera in GMA-7's Stairway to Heaven.

Right after the local adaptation of the Koreanovela, she returned to her home ABS-CBN to become Mara David in the remake of Mara Clara.

For the 14-year-old teener, this was a chance to prove her mettle as early as possible. With her performance in a major TV project, no doubt Kathryn will be part of the producers' top list.

4. Frencheska Farr. The musical Emir sparked Fracheska’s career.

From being the Are You The Next Big Star champ, the 18-year-old Kapuso is now being groomed for fame as an actress.

After launching her album recently, she’s set to become one of Richard Gutierrez's leading ladies in the Captain Barbell, which is slated for the first quarter of next year.

5. Elmo Magalona. He avidly wants to make his own contribution to music and TV—just as his dad Francis Magalona did.

Applying learnings from his father, Elmo developed his own hip-hop singing and dancing style through GMA-7’s Party Pilipinas.

Late this year, he also ventured into acting via Pilyang Kerubin and Bantatay.

At 16, he is fast becoming a confident presence on TV, and will become even more visible next year.

6. Solenn Heussaff. Her name was not familiar in mainstream entertainment before Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown where she had successfully proved that she's a socialite made of tougher stuff. In fact, she's the only lady to make it to the top 3 of the popular reality show.

She's a makeup artist, fashion designer, painter, and commercial model—and she's going to add "actress and singer" to her list of tags soon.

Early next year, Solenn will star in a movie and a TV series—both of which will be topbilled by Richard Gutierrez.

7. Jewel Mische. She may have gotten that solid start in GMA-7 after 2006’s StarStruck: The Next Level. It will be recalled that she was personally handpicked by Richard Gutierrez as his leading lady in Kamandag. But project delays have grounded her career to a halt.

With her decision to transfer to ABS-CBN, she is going to give showbiz another try, with Gerald Anderson as her screen partner. Showbiz denizens predict: This time Jewel will shine.

8. Jessy Mendiola. For three years, she landed bit roles. And after waiting with patience, she finally bags the lead role in Sabel.

And why do we think she's going to make it big? The path she's treading was where Erich Gonzales—one of Channel 2's drama princesses—came from.

9. Alex Gonzaga. After becoming a visible face on TV5, she has started getting away from the shadow of her sister Toni Gonzaga.

She was first introduced with support roles in ABS-CBN like Let’s Go! and My Girl.

But this year, she has been one of the busiest Kapatid stars apearing on Everybody Hapi, Loko Moko U, PO5, and Juicy.

And, according to a source, next year may still prove to be promising for Alex.

10. Ejay Falcon. From Pinoy Big Brother's house, he was given a spot in Katorse where he proved that he wasn’t just a handsome face.

From being one of Erich Gonzales's screen partners, he was paired with Queenie Padilla.

Next year, he is set to appear in two TV shows, Agimat: Ang mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla and Guns and Roses.

Wherever you put him and whoever he's with, this guy from Mindoro is sure to capture the viewers' attention.

11. AJ Perez. The Gigger Boy is being groomed to become one of ABS-CBN's sought-after leading men.

To date, he's the leading man of Jessy Mendiola in Sabel.

12. Jasmine Curtis. People first spotted this tall beauty in ASAP, dancing on the sidelines. Jasmine is the younger sister of Anne Curtis.

Soon, she will star opposite JC De Vera in Ang Utol Kong Hoodlum.

And why do we think she's going to be the next big thing? After TV5 announced her entry at the Christmas party for the press and media people, her Twitter account got flooded with "follower requests."

"QTV11" Will Become "GMA News TV" in 2011

Posted by JED on , under | comments (1)

Broadcast giant GMA Network, Inc. said on Tuesday it will be reformatting its lifestyle channel QTV 11 by first quarter of next year.

From a lifestyle channel it will become GMA News TV to recapture audience share, according to an official.

Felipe L. Gozon, GMA Network chairman and chief executive officer, told reporters at the sidelines of an appreciation dinner on Tuesday that the move will change most of the programs in the TV channel but will retain other shows that are gaining ratings.

It will be a news-oriented TV station. GMA News TV will have shows on sports, and news and current affairs,” he said.

Mr. Gozon said the company may not be able to meet its year-end target of P3 billion in profits as it posted a net income of P2.272 billion from January to September, up by 6% from last year.

We had lower gross revenues in the third quarter. Our revenue is just about P12 billion and we had more expenses,” he said.

The network, however, reported a 26% decline in net income for the third quarter at P583 million, compared with P788 million in the same period last year.

GMA Network’s consolidated revenues stood at P10.876 billion for the nine-month period, up by 8% compared with the P10.025 billion in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, GMA Network Chief Operating Officer Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. told reporters at the same event that the company had major expenses this year related to “projects for regional push.”

The company had more than P500 million for capital expenditures this year excluding certain projects,” he said.

Flagship Channel 7 reported a 7% increase in revenues to P9.262 billion while Q Channel 11 recorded a 10% improvement to P346 million. The network also reported a 10% increase in international revenues to P700 million. Radio revenues reached P443 million, up by 73%.

Our radio is doing very good. It is more than what we expected. We had more or less P500 million in revenues,” he said.

Operating expenses went up by 11% to P6.181 billion while general and administrative expenses rose by 8% to P2.692 billion. “GMA Channel 7 has the highest contribution in our revenues with 80%. The outlook for next year is good,” he said.

Posted by JED on , under | comments (0)

Lea Salonga, Charice Pempengco, Brillante Mendoza, and Arnel Pineda---they are just four of many Filipinos making a name around the world. As they get recognized internationally, they also boost our pride in being Filipinos.

But with all the glory they bring to the country, do they even get the support they deserve from the government?

Award-winning broadcast journalist Karen Davila gets to know the Philippines’ other world-class artists to find out if they are getting proper care and protection this Thursday (Dec 23) in “Krusada.”

In the music industry, there are the agencies such as “OPM or Original Pilipino Music” that support local artists and music, and Philscap, which guards the musicians’ intellectual property rights. But are these enough?

Get into the thick of the crusade as Davila meets bag designer Tina Ocampo, jewelry and bag designer Bea Valdes, furniture designer Kenneth Cobonpue, architect and interior designer Budji Layug, and indie film maker Emerson Reyes, who have all shone in their respective field of art.

Join Davila as she shifts the limelight to this pressing yet unnoticed issue in “Krusada” on December 23, Thursday, after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

Darren Criss of Glee is a Proud Pinoy; To Perform Live in Greenbelt and Trinoma Malls

Posted by JED on Monday, December 20, 2010 , under | comments (0)

Darren Criss, "Glee's" latest breakout star is proud to be Pinoy.

In an interview by Yong Chavez of ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, Darren is very vocal and proud of his Filipino roots.

"My mom is Cebuano, she’s Spanish, Chinese. My father is very, very white. I’m not like full Filipino but definitely I have many parts of me that are. My family’s Filipino. My family’s in the Philippines. It's our culture and heritage that I've always been proud of, simply because it's such a cool place. And my friends who are Filipinos are the coolest," Darren said.

Darren's mom grew up in Cebu, and he said he's looking forward to spending time with his Filipino relatives when he visits Manila to play 2 shows this week.

"I'm very excited. I was there 2 years ago for my cousin's wedding in Makati and I'll be there playing some mall shows. I'm very, very excited and happy to be back," he said.

Darren won over critics and "Glee" fans alike with his cover of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream".

Darren said if he comes back to "Glee" next year, the chance to work with Charice is something he's looking forward to.

"I would hope to meet her, if not just to congratulate her in all her success. She's just fantastic. Strictly as a fan, hopefully I get to do something with her in some capacity, if it's just to shake her hand or sing with her, I'll take either," he said.

Performing is something that Darren has been doing since childhood. He plays a variety of musical instruments and writes his own songs.

Darren shot to fame last year when videos of his performance as Harry Potter on the musical parody "A Very Potter Musical" went viral.

He and his co-performers from “Team Starkid” staged "A Very Potter Sequel" early this year to great reviews. Darren wrote all the songs in the sequel.

Darren also released his own album called "Human" last summer. It's doing so well that he plans to release a studio album in the near future.

"I was already in the works to release my first studio album right before 'Glee' started. When I got 'Glee' that changed the game a little bit because of the scheduling… We'll see what 'Glee' will let me do. I certainly would love to, but at the same time, 'Glee' is a wonderful thing to be made busy by, but certainly, I'm planning on it," he said.

Darren said hat having instant fame is fun, but he said he intends to remain unchanged by it.

And unlike other stars who can't stop spilling every detail of their lives, Darren declined to talk about his personal life.

He said he wants his fans to focus on his work. "It's a definite change of pace but it's something I'm proud of and I'm very, very grateful for it."

Catch Darren Criss tonight, December 21, at the Greenbelt 3 Park at 6:30 p.m. He is also gracing the TriNoma Activity Center tomorrow, December 22, at 7:00 p.m.
